AGENDA

Government to target unfair power prices

Labor should freeze power bills and put a windfall tax on coal and gas corporations,” he said. “With these greedy power companies paying the difference on electricity bills, prices are frozen for households but won’t hold back investment in the clean energy generation we urgently need to get prices down.” Mr Marles said the government was in talks with gas companies to find a way to help households. But he wouldn’t be drawn on whether

Energy companies that don’t pass on massive profits to customers in the form of savings will be held accountable, the prime minister says. Words: Maeve Bannister and Andrew Brown, AAP.

“We’re in a crisis… Labor should freeze power bills and put a windfall tax on coal companies”

H

ouseholds struggling with rising power bills will have relief, with the prime minister promising to crack down on energy companies that don’t pass on massive profits to customers. Anthony Albanese said his government was working towards a solution for Australians with the power companies. But that doesn’t mean he’s not prepared to take action against unfair behaviour. “We know there has been substantial increases in profits at the same time as families and businesses are hurting from the increased charges and that is why we want to work for a solution as a matter of priority,” he told reporters on the Sunshine Coast recently. “We want this to be co-operative but that shouldn’t be read as (though) we’re not prepared to take action if the energy suppliers are not prepared to co-operate here.” Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said the government was only offering “thought-bubbles” while families were hurting.

A Greens proposal to save households more than $700 on their electricity bills has been rejected by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles. Modelling for the Greens carried out by the Parliamentary Budget Office has shown a windfall tax on coal and gas companies would allow for electricity bills to be frozen for two years at pre-Ukraine invasion costs. The modelling showed the median household saving would be $776. Under the proposed plan, retail electricity bills would be frozen at the same rates as those before February 2022, with the windfall tax making up the difference.

TAFE QUEENSLAND

But Mr Marles said he didn’t think the Greens’ plan would drive down power prices beyond gas. He said the government was pushing forward to get renewable energy sources into the grid which would be the cheapest form of power in the future. “We’re not pretending that’s going to happen overnight but we are working on this in the short-term, the medium-term and in the long-term to make sure we get an answer,” Mr Marles told ABC radio. Greens leader Adam Bandt proposed the measure to help more people deal with rising living costs. “We’re in a crisis and instead of asking everyday people to pay more,

significant profits should be passed on as customer savings. “Ultimately we need to be, as we are, getting people around the table to try and get short-term answers as best we can to try and get downward pressure,” he said. The budget office costing for the Greens was based on analysis on the national electricity market by the consumer watchdog, with projections bills will rise by more than 50 per cent in the next two years. Mr Bandt said the windfall tax would freeze power bills and raise more than $25 billion. He said the additional funds would help cover other costs should electricity bills rise further or household grants to transition away from gas.

FAST FACTS

The Gruen transfer

It’s no secret that casinos are designed to confuse punters in to losing track of time. But, what about shopping centres? That’s right, those mega malls that we all know and love are also designed with similar principles. The concept is know as the ‘Gruen transfer’ or the ‘Gruen effect’ and is named after Austrian architect Victor Gruen. Victor was the first person to identify how a deliberately confusing floorplan could lead to consumers spending more time and money in a location. Interestingly, he later denied responsibility for the concept.

Do you remember?

Goosebumps are meant to ward off predators. In this physiological reaction, small muscles attached to individual body hairs contract, which leads the hair to stand on end. We inherited this ability from our ancestors, and it made them appear bigger than they were, helping to ward off predators. With modern humans having less body hair, goosebumps no longer cause us to look intimidating.

Fidget spinners rose to fame in 2017, but have actually been in existence for more than 25 years. A popular tool to assist with stress and sensory issues, a fidget spinner is a small handheld device which features ball bearings that can spin. The hype around the spinner has passed somewhat and today kids are more fascinated by a new toy – the sensory pop its.

Edgy art and a vibrant community Get ready to enjoy some of the most diverse art works by a record number of entrants at this year’s Sculpture on the Edge festival, which is set to be a visual and sensory feast for the eyes and the soul. There are a few surprises in store this year too. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

T

he countdown is on to the Sunshine Coast’s biggest annual sculpture festival. Now in its 12th year, Sculpture on the Edge will run from November 19 through to December 4 and is shaping up to be one of the best yet. The passionate voluntary team behind the event are preparing to welcome thousands of visitors to experience and enjoy a record-breaking number of artworks this year, with entries from artists throughout Australia and as far away as Spain. Sculpture on the Edge was initially a collaboration with Maleny Garden Club’s Open Gardens Festival in 2010. That success led to a stand-alone event in 2011, sponsored by the Spicers group. Initially works were installed at Spicers Clovelly Estate in Montville, and from 2012 at Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Maleny. Managed by Arts Connect Inc, a volunteer-run, membership-based, not-for-profit group, the festival will be hosted at a stunning new venue, Flaxton Gardens, which is renowned for its breathtaking, panoramic views of the coastline from Noosa to Caloundra.

President of Arts Connect Inc Gretchen Keelty says there will be something for everyone at this year’s event. “From tiny pieces in silver and handblown glass, through to bronzes and giant monolithic creations that will dominate the landscape, from abstract to classical, there is a full range of artists and styles,” Ms Keelty says. “The artists range in age from very young to into their 80s, it’s a really inclusive event and accessibility of the venue adds to that.” Ms Keelty says she is excited about moving to Flaxton Gardens’ expansive site, which enables more space to showcase more than 140 sculptures across a variety of media. In another first, this year’s program also includes a spectacular gala dinner, which is promised to be a magical night to remember. “We’ve dreamed of expanding the competition and this year it features indoor and open-air works ranging from microworks to large sculptural pieces placed throughout the picturesque grounds. It’s also enabled us to add more workshops, artist talks, public events and the inaugural

Gretchen Keelty Sculpted Dinner – an extraordinary feast for all the senses,” Ms Keelty says. “There will be an inflatable illuminated instillation by Kari Didi, which will transform the venue to an other-worldly feeling. It will be something unlike people have experienced before. Cellist Louise King is presenting something very unusual and performer Kim Kirkman will bring an operatic improvisation that will add an ethereal atmosphere. “Well-known local designer Cindy Vogels is bringing the crown she created that was worn by Lady Gaga, award-

winning wearable arts designer Larissa Salton is showcasing her stunning period gown and owner and chef at Flaxton Gardens, Alan Thompson, has designed a feast to delight the senses. It’s going to be incredible.” Ms Keelty says she is thrilled with the number of business supporters who have come forward to donate prize money and sponsorship for the competition, in particular host venue Flaxton Gardens as major sponsor of the $10,000 first prize for the overall winning artist. Artists awards will be announced on the opening night, and the People’s Choice Award will be announced at the closing party. “This is a year of many firsts, and the exhibition will be a truly magical experience for visitors of all ages, so we hope that local people will also join in alongside the thousands of visitors to our region that this annual event attracts,” Ms Keelty adds. The free exhibition will open to the public to visit from 9am to 3pm every day for two weeks, closing on Sunday, December 4. myweeklypreview.com.au

MEET THE ARTISTS Colleen Lavender How did you become involved in your craft? I have always been an artistic person, drawing all over everything and making things out of any available materials I could find. I went through university straight out of high school and discovered bronze pouring, clay and metal work. Why did you decide to work with metals? I’ve worked my way through quite a few different materials. I’ve made some beautiful bronze pieces, silver and gold jewellery and mixed media. I decided to try and make a firepit and I did a pretty bad job with a grinder and really struggled. So, I hopped on the internet with the question of how to cut metal and found a plasma cutter. The rest is history really. I’ve chopped everything from shovels to a full-sized Morris Minor. I have several public works in the Scenic Rim and a million ideas still to create. All the scrap from these projects used to go into a

renewed passion and specifically working with paper and cane. I love the lightness of the material as it allows you to see the skeletal structure underneath. For my outdoor work, I have covered it in resin so it can withstand the elements while not losing the essence of its fragile internal structure.

Sam Gowing How did you become involved in your craft? I initially studied and practised arts in Sydney in the late ’80s, which is where I first started transitioning from painting to sculptures. However, it has been a more recent return to the arts where I found my

What or who inspires you? I am inspired by the ocean and all its magnificent creatures. When time permits, I volunteer with a group in Burleigh Heads (Humpback and High-rises), and we survey and collect data on the migrating humpback whales each season. Nothing gives me a greater thrill than to see whales with new calves displaying behaviours that feature in my work. With my eagle ray piece, Flight of the Eagle Rays, I also want to capture the beauty of these rays as they swim in the ocean and fly through the air. I try to feature creatures that are within

big off-cut drum and one day I started taking the scrap out and welding it into forms and sculptures. I really felt like I had found my calling with the welder and plasma cutter, and I love to show other women how to use these seemingly scary machines to build beautiful things. What or who inspires your work? I’m inspired by all sorts of things. I love making horses and animals and putting life into what seems to be such an unyielding material… the plasma cutter makes it so easy. What is your favourite piece? I have lots. Thirst, my first real horse sculpture and Solace, my Morris Minor are two of my favourites. I’ve dreamt about that project for years and just recently completed her. Five weeks of full time cutting and I would easily start again tomorrow. Why did you decide to enter Sculpture on the Edge this year? I love Sculpture on the Edge. The Maleny area is so picturesque, beautiful people and a really appreciative following.

our Queensland coastlines. I want to highlight the importance of us looking after our oceans and environment to protect all these great species. What is your favourite piece of art that you have created and why? Without doubt, my favourite artwork is my Whales Playground, which will be shown in the Sculpture on the Edge exhibition. I love the juxtaposition of the beautiful whales being exhibited in the hinterlands with the ocean in the distance. I love that they change with every light from dusk to dawn. What drew you to be a part of Sculpture on the Edge? Last year I saw all these feeds from the festival by other artists and I did not want another year to go by without applying. I think the opportunity to display my work in such a beautiful spot in the hinterland will be such a privilege.

NEW ERA IN HEALTHCARE Sunshine Coast charity Wishlist has unveiled a one-of-a-kind centre that will change the face of healthcare for the community.

T

he Sunshine Coast’s health charity has marked a significant milestone with the opening of an Australian-first centre. The doors of Wishlist Centre have officially opened as Wishlist celebrates its third affordable accommodation facility to benefit patients and families accessing public healthcare. Its opening marks a very special

moment in the charity’s 24-year history. Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says Wishlist Centre will offer a unique circle-of-care for those experiencing significant health issues, away from the clinical environment of a hospital. “Having affordable, comfortable accommodation right across the road from our major hospital, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, will ease the burden

on patients and families needing to access medical services away from their home,” Ms Rowe says. The four-level facility, built by Maroochydore-based Hutchinson Builders, features 18 rooms, a podium level with full kitchen and communal spaces, and will provide crucial cancer support services, youth mental health programs, and parental resilience groups. The facility was made possible by a $12 million federal Community Health and Hospitals Program grant, and a $2 million gift from local philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace advocated for the funding from Canberra.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe, Charli Goodrich, 4, and Wishlist board member Tony Long “It’s a great privilege to represent the people of Fisher in Canberra and advocate for the infrastructure and services the region needs,” Mr Wallace says. Guests who live outside the 50-kilometre radius of SCUH may also qualify for free of charge accommodation under the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS). “You never know when a health crisis may impact you or a family member, so Wishlist Centre is here in times of need,” Ms Rowe says. HOMEGROWN TALENT TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT CRE8

T

AFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus is set to come alive in an explosion of colour and creativity on November 18 with the return of CRE8. Showcasing the incredible skill and imagination of the Sunshine Coast’s

up-and-coming creatives as they prepare to graduate and pursue their passion for the arts, the free family-friendly event offers something for everyone to enjoy. Art lovers, industry members and aspiring artisans will have the opportunity to admire a wide array of awe-inspiring

creations produced by TAFE Queensland’s visual arts, fashion, and photography students. There will be an opportunity to meet the talented artists behind them and learn more about TAFE Queensland’s creative courses. Interactive activities, live music, pop-up shops, and food trucks will also provide plenty of Friday night entertainment for the whole family. TAFE Queensland faculty director for creative and digital for the east coast region, Angela Lisle, says CRE8 provides students with a valuable opportunity to exhibit the work they have created using the skills they have developed during their studies. “Our students have poured their heart and soul into their work,” Ms Lisle says. “CRE8 offers these students a chance

to get their names out there and launch their careers in the creative industries by showing the Sunshine Coast public what they can do. “The arts are such a vital industry, so whether you’re a fan of the arts or you’re simply looking for something different to do with the family, by coming along to CRE8 you’ll be showing your support for local talent.” Shelby Waters is among the 50 students exhibiting their skills at CRE8, with her designs to feature in the fashion show on the night. The advanced diploma of applied fashion design and merchandising student says she is excited to create her own collection and share her work with the community. “I’ve loved designing our collections – we’ve had a lot of freedom to express ourselves through our designs,” she says.

WHAT’S THE LATEST ON PROJECT 24?

Festive Garden to light up the night Get excited! The Festive Garden, Sunshine Coast Council’s Christmas lights experience, is back and this year it’s going to be brighter than ever.

C

elebrating our stunning native trees at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, expect to see an explosion of colour against the starry sky as thousands of lights set the stage for a magical experience. The Festive Garden runs for five nights from December 16 to 20. There are three stages to get you in the festive mood, plus an increase in roving performers – even Santa, who loves a selfie, has ditched the grotto and will be walking around the gardens. Grab a bite to eat from one of the food trucks, before enjoying some Christmas entertainment. A reading of The Night Before Christmas in the kids’ corner will have everyone spellbound. Here children can write their letters to Santa and take part in scavenger hunt activities. Another new addition is the Christmas Grinch Show. With two performances each night, this is bound to be a favourite. And for those who want a good old Christmas Carol, you won’t get better than the Sunshine Statesman Barbershop Chorus. Tickets for the free Festive Garden experience will be released

on November 23 at events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. A map and entertainment program will be available once visitors secure their tickets. Community Portfolio Councillor David Law says last year’s walk-through experience was a huge success. “This year, we’re expecting the experience to be better than ever and a great way to get into the Christmas spirit,” Cr Law says. “Once again, getting to the event is simple thanks to the free park and ride service, and bookings are essential.” Free shuttle buses will run continuously between the UniSC Transit Centre and the Botanic Garden from 5pm, with the last bus returning at 9pm each evening. The Sunbus Express is accessibility compliant and able to accommodate wheelchairs, strollers, and mobility devices, however those unable to catch a bus should contact the event team at events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/thefestivegarden to make alternative arrangements.

PREPARE NOW There are three simple steps to ensure your household or business is prepared for extreme events.

DID YOU KNOW Most of the migratory shorebirds have now arrived on our shores after completing a marathon flight over many days without a break. Shorebirds are also called wader birds. Their long legs are great for wading, but not for swimming. Once they started their journey across the Pacific Ocean, there is no stopping to sleep or eat for these endurance fliers. When they arrive on the Sunshine Coast, they’re hungry and tired, so please be sure to share our shores and keep your distance.

FACT All smiles at Sunshine Coast Libraries!

Ninety-four per cent customer satisfaction was received for Council’s library and cultural programs, which help connect and provide educational services for the community.

FROM THE MAYOR Our world-renowned beaches are one of the most popular drawcards in our region and for the thousands of residents and visitors who will head to our beautiful beaches this summer and beyond, their safety is in the very best of hands. A new agreement between Council and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) will ensure highly skilled professional lifeguards continue to patrol our popular beaches for at least the next five years. This is a substantial arrangement that will see Council inject just under $5.5 million per year into lifeguard services to keep residents and visitors to our region safe at our patrolled beaches. Over the past 12 months, more than seven million people visited Sunshine Coast beaches and lifeguards performed 849 rescues and more than 8000 first-aid actions. This new agreement enables SLSQ to employ 16 full-time lifeguards, 16 part-time lifeguards and maintain a casual pool of approximately 50 lifeguards during the peak season. It provides for approximately 93,000 lifeguard patrol hours per year across 22 Sunshine Coast beaches from Coolum North to Golden Beach. Visit Council’s website to view locations.

DIG DEEP THIS CHRISTMAS

CHARITY APPOINTS VICE PATRON

Woolworths stores on the Sunshine Coast are organising a local community food drive to help deliver food relief to those experiencing hardship in the lead-up to Christmas. Local customers are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items including breakfast cereals, pasta, rice, instant noodles, canned fish or meat, spreads (peanut butter, honey, jam), baked beans and spaghetti to specially marked trollies in-store. According to the 2022 FoodBank Hunger Report, more than half a million households struggle to meet food needs. Sunshine Coast customers can donate in store until November 15.

Well-known Sunshine Coast philanthropist and generous supporter of RACQ LifeFlight Rescue, Jocelyn Walker, has accepted the honour of becoming the inaugural vice patron for the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett region. Ms Walker has been appointed to the role after four years as founding chair of the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Sunshine Coast and South Burnett Regional Advisory Committee and seven years as a company member. “I feel truly honoured to be offered this new role in recognition of my long history with LifeFlight,” Ms Walker says. “I look forward to continuing to support the advocacy and leadership of this vital service across our region.”

FOODIE FAVE WILL BE BACK Planning is now underway for the 2023 The Curated Plate culinary festival, with event dates confirmed as July 28 to August 6. To get a jump start on next year’s event two information sessions will be held on November 14 and 15 for local businesses and producers wanting to learn about the festival, the benefits for industry and the community, and to understand the opportunities available. In 2022 the 10-day festival menu featured 91 events, hosted by 42 industry partners from the coast to the hinterland. Visit thecuratedplate.com.au.

The inaugural Beauties, Breasts and Bubbles Fashion Parade has raised $14,000 to help women on the Sunshine Coast facing a breast cancer diagnosis. The sold-out community event featured an inspiring fashion parade where 12 local breast cancer survivors modelled lingerie, breast prostheses, swimwear and clothing to celebrate body positivity and showcase beauty after cancer. The McGrath Foundation and Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Program each received a $7000 donation to contribute toward their efforts to support the 450 Sunshine Coast women diagnosed with breast cancer annually.

A CLEAR MINDSET Sunshine Coast teenager Oscar Tyler is pulling on his running shoes in a bid to raise $10,000 in the name of mental health. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

Buderim teenager is set to put his physical and mental capabilities to the test as he attempts to run a solo marathon. Matthew Flinders Anglican College student Oscar Tyler plans to complete 42.2 kilometres on November 27 with an ambition to make a difference to the lives of people struggling with a mental illness. Speaking of his own experiences, the 16-year-old student says his Running for Clear Minds campaign is a way to raise awareness about the small ways people can work to overcome adversities in everyday life. From this, he hopes to raise $10,000 for Australian mental health charity the Black Dog Institute. “Mental illness can be challenging to overcome,” Oscar says. “Through my personal experience, I’ve found that running and other forms of exercise are extremely helpful in achieving a healthy mind and body.” For his marathon, Oscar will run from Sunshine Beach to Mooloolaba surf lifesaving club with his proud grandfather and former distance runner, Peter Buckingham, following closely behind on a bike.

“Oscar is a very determined young man and has set his mind on this challenge with remarkable enthusiasm and tenacity,” Mr Buckingham says. Mr Buckingham says Oscar has been using a professional training schedule for long distance running and is currently peaking at 32 kilometres in two hours, 22 minutes and 28 seconds, and increasing his distance each week. “As his support crew I’m following him for the length of the marathon by bicycle and ensuring his safety and wellbeing by supplying the necessary drinks and sustenance he’ll require,” Mr Buckingham adds. “We’ve both cycled and mapped the course in preparation.” Next year, Oscar and Mr Buckingham will participate in the family category of the Mooloolaba triathlon alongside father/son Stuart Buckingham – making up a team of three generations. If you would like to support Oscar’s run for mental health, visit teamblackdog.org.au and search ‘Oscar Tyler’. If you, or someone you know needs help, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14. If you are in a life-threatening situation, call 000 immediately.

RARE FIND STEEPED IN HISTORY Two rare artefacts found in a Coolum garage are set to become part of the Queensland Country Women’s Association’s heritage collection. Coolum resident Lance Barrett found an antique sewing box and tea caddy, dating back to about 1790, when he was clearing out his garage last month. He believes both items, which have been in storage for many years, belonged to his late great-grandfather, and originated from the United Kingdom. After reaching out to his local MP Dan Purdie for advice, Mr Barrett

contacted the Eumundi CWA to offer the rare pieces to the organisation’s state collection. Mr Barrett says he is pleased the two items have found a new home, which ensures their rich heritage is preserved. “It seems to me it would be shameful to see these historic items lost to our future generations,” Mr Barrett says. Eumundi CWA spokesperson Janet Millington says the two items will go on display at the QCWA Heritage House in Ipswich to reveal more about the lives of early women settlers in Australia.

Nambour Showgrounds I am happy to advise that the Nambour Showgrounds JD Grimes Grandstand renewal works have commenced. This project is a much-needed upgrade to the access stairs and balustrade along the main grandstand. The project is scheduled to be completed prior to the Christmas break. The Moss Day Pavilion Equestrian Arena upgrade has also commenced. This project is expected to provide the Sunshine Coast with a first-class equestrian arena complete with a judges’ box, timed irrigation, new stormwater and electrical infrastructure as well as a first-class riding surface. Works are expected to be complete in the new year.

Quota Park, Nambour I’m excited to announce the new Nambour Quota Park playground is opening soon. There will be a contoured rock wall, climbing rope net, banister slide, internal climbers with various levels of challenge, a rope elevator, and a huge spiral slide. Be sure to check it out during the summer holidays.

Nambour Forecourt Live! Nambour Forecourt Live! events have been running for over a year now with great success. The Nambour Forecourt is always a hive of activity after being transformed into a cool, green and friendly space where people can relax, dine, play, perform and just be. Be sure to come along to the upcoming events on November 18 and December 9 for an afternoon of family fun, music and food. Don’t forget if you have any questions please email: david.law@sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au and follow my Facebook page for regular updates: @DavidLawDivision10.

I am pleased to have worked with the community and their beloved pooches to deliver a new dog off-leash area close to town in Lilly Ponds Park, Mapleton. I would like to thank long-time Mapleton local and advocate for the project, Hank Cedric Wade, who championed this project, as well as the many community members who provided feedback last year to help determine their favoured site. The new fenced site offers the community a good overall layout to enjoy time outdoors with their furry companion in a welllocated area away from other park users.

THE TIME IS NOW FOR ACCESSIBLE TOURISM An estimated one in five Queenslanders are living with a disability, and the accessible tourism market is estimated to be worth a whopping $8 billion per year. The average spend by people with a disability is higher than people without a disability and as Dane Cross from Spinal Life Australia often simply puts it to me, ‘good accessibility is good for business’. But there is more to it than that. I attended a forum last week on accessible tourism and heard some confronting first-hand accounts from visitors with a disability about the challenges they face travelling and limitations of our experiences to cater for them. It made me realise just how far we have to go to be more inclusive, and showed the importance of initiatives like Sunshine Coast Council’s new Mooloolaba precinct that apply universal design principles to ensure that people with disability can access and enjoy the

facilities like everyone else. That’s why last week’s announcement of 2023 as the Year of Accessible Tourism is so important, and with the state government tipping in $12 million to support it, the Sunshine Coast has a great opportunity to be a leader in accessible tourism. Not just because it’s good for business or required for the lead up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but because everyone deserves to be able to enjoy the Sunshine Coast and all our experiences.

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL PROMOTION

Jacqui Atique and Mayor Mark Jamieson

F

rom animal welfare volunteers to eco-building designers, the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Sustainability Award recognises the individuals and groups who deliver. They deliver for our climate, environment, cultural history, youth, waterways and resources. That’s a pretty broad brush and includes a lot of legends who deserve to be recognised. If you know anyone that fits the bill, take the next step and nominate them for a Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award in the sustainability category. Simply being nominated can give a real boost to someone who gives their time to make a difference and for business and organisations, it’s a great way to increase volunteers or raise awareness and exposure. The 2022 sustainability recipient, Jacqui Atique, CEO at ECOllaboration says it was a fantastic honour to be nominated.

“Often organisations like ours go about their daily work without really realising the impact they are having on the community,” Ms Atique says “And so the awards are a great opportunity to get that extra pat on the back you sometimes need. “We’ve got a lot of extra volunteers for our citizen science projects and received a lot of enquiries about our environmental education campaigns.” Previous sustainability recipients range from big organisations like Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Warriors who do amazing work for local wildlife, conservation and education, through to families like the Millington’s who dedicated their 33 acres of land to conservation and education programs. In between, there have been volunteers like 2017 recipient Rhondda Alexander whose volunteering efforts and outstanding contribution to conservation enhanced community capacity,

S U N S H I N E

engagement and participation in environmental issues. Or 2015 joint recipient Derek Foster who is a renowned and cherished advocate for the protection and conservation of coastal waterways. The reasons for winning may be varied, but the one thing each of these recipients have in common is their drive, dedication and delivery in supporting those things we hold most dear. Nominees should demonstrate achievement in one or more of the following: • Climate Action – Recognises local community action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase community understanding of the impacts of climate change and increase the local community capacity to respond in a sustained way. • Environmental Protection and Enhancement – Recognises outcomes that aid in protection of the natural environment focusing on the conservation and rehabilitation of native flora and fauna. • Culture and Landscape – Recognises outcomes, which proudly preserve and value cultural history and the Sunshine Coast’s natural character and amenity. • Youth Engagement – Recognises positive environmental programs/events, which encourage and promote youth initiatives and environmental education and/or achievement. • Resource Recovery & Waste Management – Recognises achievement in resource recovery and waste management including initiatives, which conserve resources, recover and reuse materials, create new product/markets and assist

in litter prevention. • Water Conservation and Quality – Recognises outcomes that achieve sustainable water management through innovative water conservation, water re-use initiatives and practices that improve water quality. Nominating is easy • Identify the person, group or organisation you want to recognise • Head to council’s website and in 300 – 500 words, tell the judges why your nominee should win • Hit submit • Your nominee will receive an email saying they’ve been nominated • Nominee walks taller, has a spring in their step and feels pretty good about the work they’re doing – winning. There are seven categories to choose from and nominations close November 18. Visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ ausdayawards and give someone the recognition they deserve.

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

The sun (your power planet) forms fabulous connections with Neptune and Pluto, so prepare for a creative surge as inspiration strikes and confidence blooms. If you are a Leo poet, painter, performer, writer, singer, dancer or musician, make the most of it.

This week – in areas involving your professional work and your public reputation – best laid plans could come unstuck, as you ride a wave of unsettling changes. Mars continues reversing through your career zone (and on the weekend it squares Neptune).

The Venus/Jupiter trine is terrific for work and money. But – with Mars in retro mode – don’t mislead someone by giving them mixed messages. Do your best to keep communication crystal clear, especially in areas involving legal matters, education and commerce.

Nebulous Neptune squares mighty Mars, which is still reversing through your trust and control zone. You’ll feel disoriented and confused, and could try to regain control by slipping into controlfreak mode. The sun/Pluto link encourages you to slow down.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)

This week the sun, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto activate your spirituality zone, so slow down, review major plans, revisit unfinished projects and look for inspiration from within. It will take plenty of persistence to turn your dreams into reality.

Mars continues reversing through your work zone until January 12, so – when it comes to professional matters – it’s a case of one step forwards and two steps back. With patience and perseverance, you’ll eventually get there. Friday and Saturday favour personal goals.

Aquarians are fiercely independent folk. You pride yourself on being able to do most things on your own but that’s not always such a good idea. This week, the secret to success is repairing (and rebooting) old relationships. You’ll find many hands make light work.

Do your best to get the balance right between your professional life and your domestic responsibilities. If a stressful situation is worrying you, then do something about it. But make sure you communicate your intentions clearly, otherwise you could be misconstrued.

MY OPINION

MO MONEY, MO AWARENESS?

FEATHERED FOES OR FRIENDS?

Jane Stephens questions whether popular fundraising campaigns are out of step with current social movements.

Wild birds have become a regular part of Ashley Robinson’s day-to-day life, but his latest roommates are causing havoc.

T

imes have changed in the charity world. Gimmicks don’t have the cut through they once did. Attention spans wane. Remember how omnipresent Red Nose Day was in the 1990s? There were stickers and plastic proboscises all over and even cars and buildings donned rouge bulges. SIDS awareness was at an all-time high. Over the years, we had ice-bucket challenges to raise money for MND; no-makeup selfies, pledges to wear pink, had morning tea and bought daffodils for cancer awareness and worn khaki for Steve Irwin Day. But somehow, over the years, we have become harder to engage in the purpose of our shenanigans and seemingly fewer people are actually coughing up the much-needed funds – the point of the campaigns. This month is Movember, when men are challenged to grow a moustache to raise money for men’s mental health improvement and suicide prevention, as well as prostate and testicular cancer. They are four enormous problems. Movember was born in Melbourne in 2003, when two blokes met up for a beer and a chat. They recruited 30 men to sign

up to grow a moustache and to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. It went gangbusters. I am all for men taking their health seriously. But Movember seems to be out of step with current social movements – it plays on stereotypes about blokes being a bit dim and needing to be told to better themselves. Haven’t we moved past that? And there is a dissonance between the current push for gender-neutral clothing and pronouns and a male charity that basically oozes testosterone. They are not alone, mind you – virtually every female charity chooses hot pink in their branding. The other reason Movember is not as prominent as it should be now is the trend for men to be hairless from the neck down, but all wild and furry from clavicle to crown. Mos are cool again and those who grow them solely for fundraising purposes don’t stand out anymore. But let us not forget how important this charity is in providing support and research funding. In Australia, Movember has raised $1.4 billion in the past 19 years, including $29 million last year. Movember mos might not stand out like they used to, but there is still a need to improve men’s health.

M

y dear other half is a wildlife carer. Yes I know, she has had plenty of practice dealing with me over the years. Her field of expertise is birds, and in particular lost or found companion birds. Our house at times resembles a cross between Steptoe and Son’s backyard and Australia Zoo, with my only places of solitude being the garage and the bedroom. Everywhere else has either a bird in it or is within hearing or pooing range. That was before I went away for a few days. On return, as I carried my bag in the door, I found I had a roommate – a rescued pigeon who was now calling my bedroom home. “Only be here for a while until he feels better.” These are the words I have heard many times before. And then comes the question: “What will we call him?”. We decided on Walter. Now the thing about pigeons is that they randomly make weird noises in the middle of the night. After a few days Dr Dolittle/Pet Detective locates another “special” pigeon in amongst her flock. This one is named Paloma.

Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.

Not accustomed to each other’s company, the two birds were in a Mexican standoff for a couple of days. But then the weird noises start in the middle of the night. The birds have become more than just friends. After about a week of these goings on (in addition to the skidding and sliding I’ve been doing across the timber floor as my foot lands on loose bird seed) I come home from work one night to discover that the pigeon pair have been relocated to the other end of the house. I remember thinking how thoughtful my dear wife was to do this, but I never actually thanked her. A few days later I come home during the day to find the birds back in my space. Why? “I didn’t shift them because I was worried about you,” she begins. “I shifted them during the night because you get up too early and you were waking them up. After you go to work I put them back in the bedroom so they get the sun.” And here was me thinking she actually cared about me? Welcome to my world, It’s a little like Night at the Museum.

STAPLES, SULTANAS AND KIDS Sami Muirhead is no stranger to the trials and tribulations of motherhood, but remains positive as she reflects on past sagas.

T

oday my kid stapled his own finger. He properly put a whole staple into his index finger and needed a doctor to pull it from his little hand. I think it hurt my heart more than it hurt him. Last night the dog had diarrhoea and then I forgot to collect my daughter from dance lessons. She waited 60 minutes for Mother of the Year to appear. So today was meant to be a better day, but the universe missed that memo. Yes, my 10-year-old son somehow managed to whack a staple in his own finger and there it stayed while he waited in the school sick bay to be taken to a doctor. The medical team at Medicine on Second were amazing. My boy got the green whistle and was pretty plucky as they plucked that staple out of his finger. The medical staff of the Coast must think I am not raising the smartest of kids as we have had quite a run of incidents when it comes to my kids putting things where they do not belong. When my daughter was five years old she shoved a sultana up her nose and there it stayed firmly wedged. It involved a trip to the hospital and talk of surgery, but finally came out with a long pair of pliers and my

hysterical daughter wrapped up in a straight jacket to stop her thrashing. Then my youngest son pierced his own ear when he was four years old with one of my earrings. He told the doctor he wanted to look like me. The same kid swallowed a marble because he thought it was a grape. Thank goodness that saga passed when the

marble passed. And my daughter sprayed cockroach spray all over herself thinking it was sunscreen. It burnt her pristine skin. Kids love to put things where they do not belong. We have found bubble gum shoved inside the DVD player. I once located my drivers license in the toaster. And do not even get me started on the strange places they hide rubbish instead of taking it to the bin. On a positive note, at least my son who stapled his finger is yet to discover super glue. What could go wrong when he does?

BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR DESIGN IDEAS YOU’LL LOVE

did you know? Thinking about installing external shutters? There are many benefits. The expert team at Shademe Sunshine Coast say external shutters help to control and regulate sunlight and airflow, offer greater privacy and security, and protect your home against extreme weather conditions. They also provide a great aesthetic appeal to a property.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN OUTDOOR RUG When selecting a mat for your alfresco area, it’s important to look for a quality product that is made from a hard-wearing fibre and that is stain resistant, durable and easy to clean. A rug that is UV treated is also a must. Pictured here is the Alpine outdoor rug from Carpet Call.

we love! The Foli outdoor cushion is from Kas Australia.

FLOORING REFRESH Five ideas to renew your outdoor space. 1. Topcrete – a cement based spray-on coating that is super strong. It’s available in a range of colours to suit any style. 2. Stamped or stenciled concrete – this decorative concrete product imitates rock, slate, tiles and timber. 3. Decking – whether it’s timber or composite material, decking is a popular option. Your choice of material will come down to your budget and maintenance requirements. 4. Tiling – natural stone and porcelain are the best options for outdoors. Durable and easy to clean, tiles may be pricey but they are long-lasting. 5. Exposed aggregate – a decorative stone mix concrete, this option is durable and cost-effective.

SAIL THE WHITSUNDAYS With something for everyone, cruising is the ultimate family holiday, and P&O’s latest ship has plenty to offer. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

T

he buzz of excitement in the air was palpable among our fellow travellers as we arrived at the new International Cruise Terminal in Brisbane recently to board our seven-day trip to the glorious Whitsundays. As avid ‘cruislings’ we were thrilled to finally set sail on P&O’s newest cruise ship, the Pacific Encounter, after a long hiatus due to the pandemic. Previously sailing under the name Star Princess, Pacific Encounter has been completely refurbished, with a capacity of a whopping 2600 guests. After a substantial dry dock in Singapore, she

now calls the passenger terminal in Brisbane her new home. As one of P&O’s larger ships, the Pacific Encounter offers an array of dining options (12 to be exact), speciality shops, three swimming pools, including adult’s only retreat Oasis, and several bars and piano lounges with an array of talented artists to enjoy daily. Plus, there is a great nightclub (Altitude) for those who want to continue partying into the wee hours. Despite its large capacity, it never felt crowded on board, with plenty of space around the swimming pools and no long line ups in the buffet-style Pantry

restaurant. One of the most appealing aspects of cruising is from the moment you step on board your holiday begins – no travelling, no transfers, no lugging baggage around airports. Within minutes of boarding, you are on the deck, cocktail in hand (no designated driver required) and ready to relax and enjoy. Kicking off with the sail away party, the entertainment crew do a wonderful job of creating a party atmosphere by getting the guests involved in dancing and singing as the ship sets sail. Decorated in a modern contemporary style, the Pacific

Encounter captures the elegance and grandeur of a cruise ship with all the modern conveniences required for all ages, from families to couples to more mature travellers. Plus, the kids club means parents can enjoy a well-deserved break for a few hours while the little ones have a ball and make new friends. The lobby, located on deck five, was one of our favourite places to hang out. It’s the perfect spot to sit and relax with a drink from one of three fabulous bars while soaking up the live entertainment. When it comes to daily activities on offer, there is no shortage of things to do. Keep an eye out for the daily newsletter delivered to your room each evening with a comprehensive list of what’s on offer the following day. As a theatre-loving family, we thoroughly enjoyed the all-singing, all-dancing feature shows in the marquee each night. Make sure you get there early, as seats fill up quickly. Travelling with two young adult children, plus a teenager, the ship offered something for all ages. Our cabin was spacious and functional, with a good-size balcony to sit back with a glass of bubbles and marvel at the ocean as the sun set. Our first port of call was Airlie Beach, where we enjoyed roaming the eclectic markets and soaking up the beautiful beaches, while our overnight stop in Cairns allowed us time to spend exploring the tropical surrounds. As we sailed back into Brisbane after a fun-filled seven days, we were already discussing our next cruise. The biggest decision is where to next?

WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? With border and COVID-19 testing restrictions easing, Australians are rekindling their passion for travel and heading abroad. If you’re going to travel, why not make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience? The world is full of foreign lands to discover, treasures to tick off and things to see and do (and eat). It’s time to write your bucket list of holidays – the kind that take your breath away and make your skin tingle. The type of holiday that takes you to the farthest, most remote reaches of the Earth. The experience that makes you feel alive. Seeing the Northern Lights, going on an African safari, cruising to Antarctica or the Arctic – these are the holidays that belong on that bucket list. So if it is sleeping in a castle, chartering a private yacht around the myweeklypreview.com.au

Mediterranean, or tailoring your own air-tour – your journey starts here. For co-owner of Playford Travel Group, Neil Playford, Africa has always had a special place in his heart. “To me, there is nothing more magical than an African safari,” he says. “Seeing an amazing array of animals in their natural habitat, who are often oblivious to your presence, is truly a bucket list experience. “When you add in some beautiful scenery, amazingly friendly people, and some of the most stunning sunsets in the world, then Africa really is a special place for everyone to enjoy.” Start ticking off your bucket list in style. Experiences are booking up fast so don’t hesitate. Talk to the experienced travel advisors at Travel Associates today. Visit travelassociates.com My Weekly Preview | November 10, 2022 35

HOW MUCH FOREIGN CURRENCY SHOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU WHEN YOU TRAVEL? How much foreign cash you travel with will largely depend on your destination. Questions to consider include: How long will you be staying? Is tipping expected? Are there local cash-only markets or stores? Do activities you are planning offer better deals for cash? Rhonda, Alison and the Crown Currency Exchange team in the Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore, have extensive knowledge of more than 80 currencies and their destinations. Rhonda explains: “We offer more than just a currency exchange service. We advise our clients on which currencies they will need for their destinations, including stopovers. “We guide them on how much currency and the best denominations to take; for example, they may need small notes for markets and bigger notes for accommodation”. Organising your currency in-store with the team before you travel can avoid the risk of being scammed online and in the countries you visit. “One of the current scams we hear about is overseas

exchangers are saying the advertised rate is only for Mondays or any other day that isn’t the day you are there, and then they give you a worse rate of the day. Cheeky, but they know they have a captive audience,” Rhonda says. The Crown Currency Exchange team will offer you a competitive rate with no fees or commissions on top. “We keep the model simple, so there are no hidden surprises. The rate we quote you is exactly what you will receive.” You can find the Crown Currency Exchange team under the stairs on the ground floor of Sunshine Plaza. Or visit crowncurrency.com.au

FESTIVE FUN FOR FAMILIES LIVING WITH AUTISM

T

he 9th annual STEPS Christmas Party dedicated to creating a safe and festive space for children with autism will return to the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, November 27. Hosted by STEPS Autism Treehouse and STEPS Pathways Charity, the event will feature an array of water slides, rides and obstacle courses, a petting zoo with ponies and a visit from Santa, all within a safe and comfortable environment. All of these exciting activities will be taking place on two fully fenced football fields at the Kawana Sports Precinct, giving parents that extra peace of mind when their children are roaming between attractions. STEPS Pathways Charity CEO Anne Nioa says the STEPS Christmas Party offers a unique opportunity for children living with a disability or autism to enjoy themselves freely. “The best thing about this Christmas

40 My Weekly Preview | November 10, 2022

40.indd 1

party is that everybody feels like they belong. It’s wonderful to see all members of the family enjoying a day out in a truly inclusive environment,” Ms Nioa says. “It doesn’t matter if your child gets overwhelmed or upset, no one is going to judge because they’ve seen it all before. “For a lot of these families, this is one of the only large-scale events they can truly look forward to each year and we’re so thankful to be able to provide that.” Whether you’re staying for a few hours or the whole day, there will be plenty of undercover seating to keep you cool during the warm weather, with a variety of food and drink options also available. Tickets for the event are on sale now at bit.ly/stepschristmasparty, or via the QR code below. Tickers are $15 each, $50 for a family of four or $60 for a family of five.

This event is open to everyone and will run from 9am-2pm on Sunday, November 27.

CARERS THAT DRIVE ARE HELPING PEOPLE REACH THEIR GOALS A good life and the opportunity to reach his potential have always been Kate’s goals for her oldest son Justin, who was diagnosed with autism when he was only a toddler. When NDIS funding was approved in 2018, it was life-changing for the whole family, and for the first time, Justin really believed he could achieve one of his goals of paid employment. With both Kate and her husband working and managing the usual parent run around with their two other children, Carers That Drive quickly became an important service enhancing their family life. Kate said that in the early days, knowing they had support for Justin to get to and from his therapist, medical appointments and day programs was a life changer and really made a difference with his personal progress. “Justin’s volunteer work was a huge step forward for him and doing this with the support of Carers That Drive, added to his sense of independence and

confidence. It was also fantastic to use his social skills in a safe setting with some wonderful supporters matched to his needs,” she says. “Then, with the support of a terrific team, Justin landed a paid job. “It’s been life changing for him and Carers That Drive continue to be a part of this journey. It’s like they’re a trusty, reliable part of family. Always there when Justin needs them, always timely and willing to help. Carers That Drive managing director Suzie Coghlan says it’s a delight to support people, enabling them to enjoy life with greater independence and be part of the journey towards meeting their goals.

“It’s like they’re a trusty reliable part of the family. Always there when Justin needs” The Carers That Drive service was established in 2009 and was built around the needs of people who need support, which includes NDIS participants, people with aged care packages as well as self-funded clients. Regardless of circumstance, Carers That Drive match caring, experienced supporters who support people of all abilities from all walks of life.

Nationally registered NDIS provider of more than five years, Carers That Drive is an independent Australian owned company. Visit carersthatdrive.com.au. *Real people, names changed.

NDIS FEATURE and Belinda realised she needed help to change her life. It was the start of a healing process that led to untapped talents and a bright future. Assisting Belinda to best utilise her NDIS plan, Jill from Suncare Community Services soon realised that Belinda had an outstanding flair with a paint brush. Art not only brought out Belinda’s creative gift but gave her a new confidence and belief in herself. For the next 12 months, Belinda attended art therapy classes, organised by Suncare through her NDIS plan and joined outings to local art exhibitions.

And she flourished. Belinda was inspired, and with the backing and encouragement from formal and informal supports, she recently held an art exhibition of her own. Now she gets up early to enjoy the morning sunlight on her easel and decides what to wear to lunch with her friends.

To find out how Suncare’s Psychosocial Recovery Coach services can help you build on your strengths and better manage some of your everyday challenges, contact the team at 1800 786 227 or visit suncare.org.au/ services/ndis

HOW THE RIGHT SUPPORT CHANGED BELINDA’S LIFE For Belinda, her days merged into weeks of seeing no-one and going nowhere. Too anxious to leave the security of her home and venture out, she spiralled into major depression, finding no reason to get up in the morning and find joy in anything the day could offer. Her psychosocial disability had

impacted her capacity to engage in tasks of daily living and she could no longer access the community without support. Friends had stopped coming to visit and for Belinda, sadly life became isolated and lonely. A worried neighbour put her in touch with a local psychosocial recovery coach

PROPERTY

AUCTION ACTION A luxurious waterfront Mooloolaba property has been snapped up for a cool $7 million. WORDS: Steele Taylor.

AUCTION RESULTS

T

he sale of a luxurious home for almost $7m shows there is still a strong demand for waterfront property, particularly in one area of the Sunshine Coast. Number 29 Neerim Drive, Mooloolaba, was sold at auction for $6.75m, after more than 60 parties viewed the residence. McGrath sales agent Geoff Ohmsen, who specialises in local waterfront sales, says prospective buyers are determined to score their piece of paradise by the river or canal, despite a nationwide slump in property prices. “We’re still noticing hot demand, especially from interstate and overseas, in the deep-water market,” he says. “I haven’t noticed prices drop off. I’ve just noticed that properties are staying on the market for a bit longer – an average of 32 days, with an increase of 11 days from last year.” The property at Neerim Drive, on the Mooloolah River, attracted enquiries from around the world, including expats in Hong Kong, Singapore and South Africa, before it was ultimately bought by someone from Brisbane. “People from interstate and overseas

29 Neerim Drive, Mooloolaba are definitely looking to purchase (by the water) on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. But Mr Ohmsen also says locals who already own waterfront properties are looking to upgrade, and Mooloolaba is the place to be. “Some locals who already live on the water see Mooloolaba’s deepwater properties as being more blue chip and better for capital growth.” The Neerim Drive property featured an old 1980s brick and tile home until 2013, when it was bought for $1.2m, to make way for a new build. The new home, designed by renowned architect Trevor Reitsma, was upgraded two years ago.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Well, we are now in the death throws of bad swell. Sadly, this will last a while. What is unusual is some of these southeast winds when it should be northeast. Has anyone seen the footage of a female free-diver stepping off the back of a boat only to hesitate and decide to have a look? To her surprise, a massive tiger shark was swimming straight up with its mouth open. Have a great weekend and don’t step into a tiger shark.
