Inside

From the editor

Ihave always been a fan of recycled clothing. I love nothing more than poking around my local thrift shops to unearth a treasure.

You never know quite what you are going to find, including quality, designer brands that would otherwise cost a fortune. I often think about the story behind each piece, too – the person who wore them before me. But there are many more benefits to slow fashion, including our environment.

Did you know that 100 billion items of clothing are produced each year, with tonnes of it ending up as landfill, taking hundreds of years to break down. In this issue, we catch up with a talented local duo who are passionate about educating people about the importance of slow fashion through their Nambour exhibition that also pays homage to the diversity of the eclectic hinterland town (turn to page 12 for the story).

Also in this issue, we have some fabulous ideas to give your pad a cosy refresh for autumn, plus some inspiration for your next holiday.

Until next time, enjoy the read!

THE NATIONAL SECURITY CLOCK IS TIKTOKING

Some experts are questioning whether a social media app’s ban on government devices for security reasons goes far enough. WORDS: AAP.

Social media app TikTok will be banned on Australian government-issued devices because of national security risks.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus announced the ban after receiving advice from intelligence and security agencies. He says the directive will come into effect “as soon as practicable”.

“Exemptions will only be granted on a case-by-case basis and with appropriate security mitigations in place,” Mr Dreyfus says.

Concerns over TikTok relate to the potential for data to be harvested and accessed by the Chinese government under national laws that can compel companies to hand over information.

But TikTok Australia and New Zealand

general manager Lee Hunter says there is no evidence that the app is a security risk to Australians and it should not be treated differently to other social media platforms.

“We are extremely disappointed by this decision which, in our view, is driven by politics, not by fact,” he says.

“We are also disappointed that TikTok, and the millions of Australians who use it, were left to learn of this decision through the media, despite our repeated offers to engage with government constructively about this policy.”

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, who has more than 100,000 TikTok followers, earlier confirmed he would delete his account.

He says his government will follow the

lead of its federal counterparts on matters of national security.

Cyber security expert Alastair MacGibbon says the public’s use of the app should also be reconsidered.

“I do wonder whether or not there needs to be some broader action,” he told ABC Radio.

“This is not around things made in China, as it’s often depicted.

“This is an argument about things controlled by China.”

Opposition Security spokesman James Paterson says Australia is behind other countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada which have implemented a ban on government devices.

He says TikTok represents a serious espionage threat and wider action to protect the public should be the government’s next step.

“The data privacy and security risks and also the foreign interference risks that affect millions of Australians who use the platform are so far not yet dealt with,” he told Sky News.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says the coalition will support the decision but queries why it has taken so long for that decision to be revealed.

“If the Director-General of Security is giving advice to members of parliament, they should follow it,” he says.

Greens Senator David Shoebridge says the government’s directive has missed the point and does not confront data security problems.

“Banning TikTok from government devices is a publicity stunt which masks the fact our data is being exploited by every corporation that can get its hands on it – social media platforms, health apps, the games our children play,” he says.

NEW DATA REVEALS EXTENT OF NATION’S RENTAL CRISIS

Australia’s rental crisis has become even harder for tenants, with new data showing prices rising and more difficulty in finding a place to live.

The latest CoreLogic rental review for the first quarter of the year reveals a 2.5 per cent rise in the cost of rent nationally. The increases mean renters on average will have to fork out an extra $52 a week, or $2727 a year.

Vacancy rates have fallen to nearrecord lows, with 1.1 per cent of rental properties available.

The shortage has been driven by a return to pre-pandemic overseas migration levels, coupled with a shortage in rental listings across the country.

The report’s author Kaytlin Ezzy says the findings show renters are facing an even-harder time.

“The re-acceleration of Australia’s rental market won’t be welcome news for those tenants already struggling to find affordable accommodation in our capital cities,” she says.

Figures have shown the number of national rental listings at under 95,000 properties – 17.3 per cent below levels at a similar time last year.

Eggs-cellent reflexes Did you know?

Do you remember?

Disney’s Bambi animated movie backgrounds were inspired by paintings of the Song dynasty – an innovation by Chinese-born lead artist Tyrus Wong. The New York Times reports that Wong “endured poverty, discrimination and chronic lack of recognition, not only for his work at Disney but also for his fine art, before finding acclaim in his 90s”.

Eating eggs improves your reflexes. Eggs contain an amino acid called tyrosine, which the body synthesises into norepinephrine and dopamine: compounds that increase energy and alertness and improve mood. In a 2014 study published in the journal Neuropsychologia, researchers even found that tyrosine enhances our response time and improves our intellectual performance, not unlike a medical stimulant such as Ritalin or Modafinil.

A LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE SUNSHINE COAT

An upcoming exhibition pays homage to Nambour while also championing the slow fashion movement. WORDS: Lahnee Pavlovich.

The notion of slow fashion is a foreign one to most of us. It’s understanding that every garment we buy has a story behind it – a story connected to a person who has put the fabric together, sewn it, created it.

Slow fashion is figuring out that story.

And this story of slow fashion makes up part of another being told by fine art photographer Ketakii Jewson-Brown and seamstress Shaye Hardisty through their current, collaborative exhibition: “The Sunshine Coat Project”, which opened on April 4 at The Old Ambulance Station Gallery in Nambour.

The other part of that story is a love letter to Nambour through fashion, photography and video, as told through the lens of this interdisciplinary artistic duo.

“The Sunshine Coat Project features a

collection of handmade coats alongside a photographic essay which dives deep into the layers of place, memory, belonging, fashion and…Nambour,” Ketakii says.

“It kicked off April 4 and will be on display until April 29 to coincide with Fashion Revolution Week and Earth Day, with a discussion on slow fashion happening April 28, too.”

Ketakii grew up in Maleny.

She developed a love of capturing moments after her mother gifted her a 35mm camera she found at Woodford Folk Festival.

“I have been taking pics ever since, inspired by the wonder of people and places, the things that reminded me of our innate playful nature as humans,” she says.

“Shaye and I came to be close through photos. She is an incredible seamstress and musician from Mapleton, I was taking

images for her Instagram and, in exchange, she would make me clothes –the best little deal ever.

“So, when the council offered us the opportunity to pitch a project for a residency in Nambour, we teamed up to

“We started with this idea of The Sunshine Coat as a Coast-wide project incorporating different regions and only taking three months to complete. But the more we thought about it, and the more time we spent in Nambour, we realised there was more than enough material to focus our exhibition here,” Ketakii says.

“We loved what Nambour had to offer as far as diversity, how eclectic it is and how unapologetic it is in terms of fashion, people, lifestyle. So, we thought, ‘Let’s sit with this and see what comes of it’. And from here, The Sunshine Coat Project really started coming to life.

bring our skills together and wanted to create something special.”

And that’s exactly what the two have done in conjunction with 11 other creatives and the help of Nambour locals.

“We also realised that sewing 10 coats in just three months was not in alignment with the story we wanted to tell about slow fashion, and it would be a mad rush.

“Instead, we spent time connecting with the collaborating artists, heard stories told by community members

“This project is a way ... we can highlight the layers of belonging and care this community offers up”

FAST FACTS

The average person only wears up to 40 per cent of the clothes they own. Despite owning a lot of clothes, most people wear the same items over and over again.

The average person buys 60 per cent more clothing and keeps them for about half as long as they did 15 years ago.

Over 60 per cent of clothes are made from polyester and other plastic sources which can’t be broken down. Half-a-million tonnes of these contaminants reach the ocean each year.

100 billion items of clothing are produced annually. In landfill, decomposing materials from clothing manufacturing can take up to hundreds of years to break down while releasing methane into the environment.

Global clothing production represents the third-largest manufacturing industry in the world, trumped only by the automotive and technology industries.

Of the clothes that go to charity, only about 15 per cent are resold within Australia. The rest is sent to developing nations to be disposed of and to landfill.

“Buy less, choose well, make it last.”

about their town and spent 18 months working out of 2nd Space, a Sunshine Coast Council-funded creative hub, to bring this to life.

“We have been supported above and beyond by the Nambour creative community and I feel like this project is a way in which we can highlight the layers of belonging and care this community offers up, no matter who you are or where you are from.”

For Shaye, the incorporation of sustainability and slow fashion ethos into the project meant following strict rules: only sewing with either recycled or organic materials, using scraps in clever

ways and following up with suppliers to find out where things are not only manufactured, but also grown. So, most of the fabric used in this project was digitally printed on Eco Drill – an organic and recycled cotton by Next State Print: a family-owned business based in Thornbury, Victoria. The timeline was chosen to coincide with Fashion Revolution Week, which highlights the nasty side of the fast fashion industry.

“For example, people don’t realise that 9000 garments a day are getting pumped out of various mainstream fast fashion outlets,” Ketakii says.

“Then we look at the environmental impact of virgin polyester on the environment, which is horrific. When you boil polyester down, it reduces to oil and is the second-highest pollutant in the world. There are simply too many clothes on the planet and they won’t break down.

“We want to show people that small changes can make a huge impact in the long run and the best thing people can do to help is to wear the clothes they already

own, look after them and make them last, then purchase less.

“Don’t buy into new trends.

“And honestly, one of the things we love about the Nambour community is that no one buys into trends. They wear what they want, when they want. So, the exhibition and what it stands for is perfect for this part of the Sunshine Coast.

“We hope that The Sunshine Coat Project will surprise gallery visitors with its playful and yet deep reflection on this iconic Sunshine Coast locale and bring attention to sustainable fashion.”

A sustainable fashion speaking event on April 28 will feature key slow fashion advocates. The closing party on April 29 boasts local bands, drinks and a food truck.

“People can expect colour, vibrant coats handmade by Shaye, photographic images of people in the coats taken in and around Nambour, and the love stories that go with that,” Ketakii says.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1. Follow the three Rs: reuse, reduce, recycle.

2. Don’t be impulsive and buy into fashion trends.

3. Take better care of the clothes you have and use them until they are no longer wearable.

4. Choose quality over quantity.

5. Look at the labels and do your research – only buy clothing that supports slow fashion and sustainability.

6. Shop local.

CORRECTING A COMMUNITY INJUSTICE

The controversial Caloundra Watchhouse still remains idle. That’s despite the state government abandoning plans in January last year to repurpose it as a youth remand centre after sustained

community backlash. Police officers continue to transport detainees on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast almost a further 40 minutes north to the Maroochydore Watchhouse. But it seems that won’t be the case for long.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson says it is expected the Caloundra Watchhouse will return to a fully operational Queensland Police watchhouse by August this year.

“The Queensland Police Service, in consultation with the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs (DCYJMA), is managing the project for the reinstatement of the Caloundra Watchhouse as an operational watchhouse facility,” the spokesperson says.

“The option to repurpose the facility to a youth detention centre was explored by the state government and was ultimately rejected …

“Some modifications were made that are now being corrected to allow for the facility to continue as an operational Queensland Police watchhouse.”

The Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs, which operates Queensland’s youth detention centres, announced in July 2021 that the police watchhouse at 3 Gregson Place had been chosen for a short-term holding facility for young accused awaiting trial.

Youth Justice began awarding tenders and gutting the facility in November 2021, even though public consultation was ongoing and the centre was not formally approved.

Sunshine Coast Council expressed its opposition to the location of the facility.

Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie tabled a petition with more than 6000 signatures in state parliament, supported by Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie, a former homicide and child protection detective.

After considerable backlash and a

plea to the state government by Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt, Youth Justice Minister Leanne Linard announced the proposal would “no longer proceed after extensive community consultation”.

“That process found that Caloundra wasn’t the right place for this temporary centre,” she said at the time.

“We welcome the feedback, we listened to the community’s concerns and we have acted on those concerns.”

She added that the watchhouse would continue to be used by police as an operational watchhouse.

But when pushing for the remand centre, Youth Justice had described the existing facility as “decommissioned”, and police always maintained it was operational and not in need of an upgrade.

In an article in June last year, My Weekly Preview ’s sister news website Sunshine Coast News reported that the minimum cost of restoring the watchhouse was expected to be at least $3 million.

That was on top of the $380,000 the government had already outlaid on the no-longer-relevant planning, design and consultation related to the defunct youth centre.

The QPS spokesperson says the department worked in collaboration with partner agencies to prioritise the safety of the Queensland community, through maximisation of available custodial facilities.

“The number of persons in police custody can fluctuate across the state based upon the ability of Queensland Corrective Services and DCYJMA to admit those persons who have been remanded by the courts or sentenced to periods of imprisonment,” the spokesperson says.

GALA KEEPS RESCUE SERVICE FLYING HIGH

securing LifeFlight’s role in emergency response.

Hundreds of Sunshine Coast residents frocked up and dug deep to celebrate the impact of the local RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter Service, raising vital funds to help keep the chopper flying.

The LifeFlight Sunshine Coast Gala Ball on April 1 raised more than $250,000, thanks to the generosity of supporters and

sponsors. In the crowd was past patient Sonja Macfarlane, who has clocked up 10 years since she was rescued from the Glass House Mountains after falling 40 metres while hiking. Ms Macfarlane sustained multiple serious injuries, including to her face and head, and had to be winched from the cliff face.

“They’ve got your back, for whatever

adventure you choose to go on,” Ms Macfarlane says.

“RACQ LifeFlight Rescue have got your back.”

It was also an emotional milestone for her friend Chantelle Minter, who witnessed the horrific accident.

“We found out that she had to be revived three times in the helicopter before she even got to the hospital, so they are just angels in the sky,” Ms Minter says.

Other past patients, including two yachties rescued off Inskip Point last year after their boat capsized, shared their emotional stories with guests, further inspiring attendees to donate.

Aircrew Officer Rick Harvey says that as well as fundraising, the event gives guests an insight into the incredible work the crews undertake.

“It’s really important that we have these events and raise awareness that we do need the support of the community,” he says.

“We might be the ones out there doing the job but if we don’t have that support and raise money from fantastic companies and individuals, then we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”

In 2022, the Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter crew helped 448 people, which represented about $11.2 million in operational funds, at no cost to the patients.

PLANNING BEGINS ON BLI BLI BRIDGE UPGRADES

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has pledged $800,000 towards a project planning upgrades to a muchused Sunshine Coast bridge.

The two-lane bridge over the Maroochy River on David Low Way at Bli Bli was built in 1959 and is an important road link for the fast-growing community, which has seen increased traffic volumes and congestion as a result of the population expansion.

Late last year, feedback was sought from community members about how they use the roads from Maroochydore to Peregian Springs, including David Low Way through Bli Bli.

Hundreds of responses were received, with key themes including safety, congestion and design solutions. Those responses are now being used in the project to help guide planning activities.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says TMR will be carrying out regular maintenance on the bridge while planning is underway.

“Safety is our top priority and the department has a rigorous maintenance program which includes regular inspections of Bli Bli Bridge,” he says.

GIVING LIFE A SHAKE

Love for her daughter is driving a Coast mum to change the world for all blood recipients, one podcast at a time. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

ASunshine Coast mother raising awareness for blood and plasma donations is being nominated for a global award – the only Aussie in her category.

Inspired by her daughter’s chronic

autoimmune disorder, Kate Fisher created the podcast Milkshakes for Marleigh, which tells the stories of blood donors and their recipients.

Seven-year-old Marleigh was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis

and epilepsy at age three. It means her immune system identifies her healthy brain cells as foreign and attacks them, resulting in brain inflammation and prolonged seizure activity. But it is thanks to the generosity of complete strangers who roll up their sleeves regularly to donate their plasma that Marleigh is still alive.

Ms Fisher has been selected as a finalist for the 2023 Women Changing the World Awards.

She is the only Australian finalist in the Emerging Woman Changing the World category.

The awards celebrate and recognise women achieving outstanding success in areas such as sustainability, humanitarian work, leadership, advocacy, tech, product development, education, health and innovation.

In the past 12 months, Ms Fisher has written, hosted and produced more than 50 episodes of the podcast, created a community of blood donors and their recipients, and saved more than 1700 lives

through blood donations to the Milkshakes for Marleigh Lifeblood Team.

She attributes this success to the authenticity in her storytelling and the sheer desperation and gratitude with which she approached this project, as without Australian blood donors her daughter wouldn’t still be alive.

“It’s such an incredible honour to be named as a finalist for this award, especially as the only Australian woman in such a strong field,” Ms Fisher says.

“I know what it’s like to live in fear that my child will die if not enough people donate blood and I don’t ever want another family to feel that terror.

“I saw the impact that telling Marleigh’s story had on recruiting new blood donors.

“So, I created this podcast to tell all the stories of Australian blood donors and their recipients.

“I can’t wait to get to London to represent Australia and share our message of the importance of blood donation at the International Women Changing the World Summit.”

The winners of the 2023 Women Changing the World Awards will be announced in London on April 18.

Season 3 of Milkshakes for Marleigh will be released in late April. The podcast is available on Spotify.

JOURNALISTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Two award-winning investigative reporters are on the bill at an upcoming in-conversation event on the Coast.

Matthew Condon is a revered Australian novelist, journalist and author of the bestselling true-crime trilogy about Queensland political corruption. We caught up with Condon ahead of the in-conversation event at The Events Centre, Caloundra, on April 20, where he will be joined by Walkley Award-winning author and journalist Hedley Thomas. They will reflect on Thomas’s incredible personal and

professional journey during The Teacher’s Pet podcast, which led to the arrest, trial and conviction of Chris Dawson, a former Sunshine Coast resident.

Why did you become a journalist? – I had wanted to be a writer since I was a child and felt that until I wrote an international bestselling novel (and enjoy the riches that would naturally follow), I’d bide my time and become a journalist, because it was still at least a form of writing and I’d get paid to

do it. I’m still a journalist, which tells you everything you need to know about the fate of the international bestselling novel.

What was the appeal of investigative journalism? – It’s incredibly addictive. Finding pieces in the puzzle. Tracking down documents and discovering people who have important memories that they’ve never revealed to anyone. I’m particularly interested in adding to the historical record and filling in some of the blank spaces.

How has journalism changed since you began your career? – It has changed beyond recognition and not at all. The technology around it is phenomenal and not something anyone could have imagined when I was a cadet journalist all those years ago. But the essence of journalism remains the same. Tell a great story.

What has been your career highlight?

– There have been many, not least being an investigation into historical wrongdoing surrounding the admission of children to adult mental health wards in Queensland during the late 1950s and ’60s. I know that story changed lives.

Your most memorable interview? – Perhaps my interview with a hitherto elderly and very, very famous movie star in London who was exceedingly rude throughout our entire chat, then quietly asked me out for dinner at the end. I declined. Professional standards have to be maintained at all times.

Is there someone you would like to interview? – Ernest Hemingway, but he’s been dead for over 60 years.

How did it feel to be awarded an OAM? – It was a great shock, an great honour, and something I’m probably still trying to get my head around.

What novel are you most proud of? – The Trout Opera. I put everything I had at the time into that book.

Do you prefer writing fiction or non-fiction?

– I love the absolute freedom of fiction. And I have used some techniques I’ve learned writing fiction in my non-fiction. So the two are indivisible in a way. Both are hard work, and it gets harder as I get older.

What does it take to be an award-winning investigative journalist? – Ask Hedley Thomas! He’s the best of his generation. I admire him enormously. He contains the following skills in spades: curiosity, passion, doggedness, empathy and a huge ability to listen. The willingness to listen may be the most precious tool of an investigative journalist.

What advice would you give to young journalists keen to follow your path? – I would urge them to pick up the mantle without fear or favour, get out into the world and find important stories.

What can guests expect at the upcoming event on April 20? – Hedley and I have a million stories, so they can expect some tall tales. I’m hoping to excavate Hedley’s big brain in relation to podcasting and take guests behind the scenes of his international smash hit podcast The Teacher’s Pet, and more recently the extraordinary Shandee’s Story. It’s a lot to shoehorn into one evening. I guarantee it’ll be informative, but also a lot of fun.

EVENT DETAILS:

Date: Thursday, April 20.

Time: Doors open at 6pm for a 7pm start.

Location: The Events Centre, 20 Minchinton Street, Caloundra.

Tickets: $25 per person. Bookings are essential via council’s libraries website. Matthew Condon and Hedley Thomas will be available for a meet-and-greet after the event.

HARVESTING IDEAS

A new collaborative cookbook aims to reduce waste on the Sunshine Coast and stretch the food dollars of all residents.

Anew cookbook – six years in the making – has hit the shelves and aims to add new flavour to reducing food waste and helping feed those most vulnerable in the community.

SunnyCoast Eats – An A-Z Guide to Cooking with Local Food will help OzHarvest recipients and home cooks make the most of donated items or food that’s left over at the end of the week.

It is a collaboration between

DID YOU KNOW?

Locally, OzHarvest rescues and redistributes more than 15,000 kilograms of quality surplus food each month to charities, schools, community centres, youth programs, churches and other organisations across the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie.

OZHARVEST’S IMPACT ON THE SUNSHINE COAST:

• 45 charities supported

• 40 food donors

• 2.1 million meals delivered.

OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie and the nutrition and dietetics discipline at the University of Sunshine Coast.

OzHarvest local chapter founder and 2023 Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year Michele Lipner says SunnyCoast Eats is a comprehensive guide and recipe book.

“In 2017, we realised we were doing a great job of rescuing quality food that would have otherwise gone to landfill and redistributing to organisations that feed those most vulnerable in the community, but there was an element missing,” Ms Lipner says.

“Sometimes we are passing on foods that people may not be familiar with using or it may not be obvious how the

donated food might come together to form a meal.

“That’s the same for people at home who are trying to stretch their dollars and make the most of every item of food available.

“We put our heads together to find a solution and six years later, the result is SunnyCoast Eats.

“The 100-page collection features 53 contributed recipes, which are easy to make, budget friendly and champion local ingredients.”

Ms Lipner says the cookbook also includes tips on kitchen basics, food swaps and reducing food waste at home – a problem that accounts for more than a third of the country’s food waste.

SunnyCoast Eats is the result of hundreds of hours of volunteer effort, including work from 15 UniSC students who were able to gain industry experience as part of the process of developing the cookbook.

SunnyCoast Eats is available to borrow from Sunshine Coast Libraries or to purchase for $30 online at shorturl. at/epNPR.

A time for community spirit

We all know that a sense of belonging is built on exchange – be that shared time, ideas, risk or terrible Easter egg jokes. It’s also through developing a deep sense of inter-connectedness that we tend to develop a deep sense of love for where we live.

Along these lines, I am particularly heartened by both the robust community pride that runs throughout our region and by the generous spirit of our residents, many of whom are new to the region but quickly seek to join in and contribute to our community of communities.

So given we’ve had a challenging few years, please consider reaching out just a tad more to foster your neighbourhood spirit – whether that be striking up a conversation with someone new, taking extra pride in your shared spaces, buying local, joining a club or visiting your nearby park or community facilities.

If you give it a go, it would be lovely if you would let me know where it leads.

We will remember

On the subject of community spirit, I encourage you to join one of our regions many Anzac Day events on Tuesday, April 25, as we honour the service and sacrifice of the Anzacs and all the service men and women who have followed in their footsteps.

I always carry a World War II service photo of my father to think about at the dawn service and I’m always sincerely moved by the connectedness of our community on these special days.

New district library

In case you hadn’t heard, the Caloundra Administration Building at Omrah Avenue is set to be transformed into a new district library.

The refitted building will replace the existing library in Felicity Park and will include a customer service centre, community meeting space, and small council administration office.

Refurbishments are expected to start later this year, so watch this space for more exciting updates.

POLICE TALK

Sunshine Coast Police are dedicated to ensuring a safe road environment over the Easter school holidays, using a combination of highly visible and covert police presence.

During the Easter period in 2022, the Sunshine Coast District recorded one fatality and 31 traffic crashes with injury.

As of Saturday morning, April 1, this year, the state road toll stood at 52.

Of those, motorcyclists were overrepresented at 21.

Sunshine Coast Police are continuing to do their part to promote road safety and enforce road rules over the Easter holiday period through its three road safety operations.

Operation Victor Easter has been targeting the fatal five (drink driving, drug driving, seatbelts, fatigue and speeding).

Operation Riptide is seeing several random breath testing sites placed sporadically around the region during the holiday period.

Operation SMER has been targeting traffic enforcement in the hinterland.

Last year, the state recorded more than 471 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and 48 of those offences were committed on the Sunshine Coast.

Police are warning drivers that officers will be anywhere at any time.

Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol continues to saturate the Bruce Highway, Teewah Beach and the hinterland.

Remember: if you are travelling, get a good night’s sleep and avoid driving at times when you are normally asleep. Avoid driving after a long day at work and take regular rest breaks (at least 15 minutes every two hours). Arrange share driving if you are travelling over a long distance and if you know you are fatigued, don’t drive.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, but it starts with you.

This column is compiled by the Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Unit. If you have information for police, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersqld.com.au, or Policelink at police.qld.gov.au/reporting.

AN EVER-PRESENT COMPANION SCOOTING AROUND ISSUE

Put the darned phone down. It is an interloper, a menace, an invader, a time thief. The addiction is real.

But if you dare say so, people nod sagely, shrugging. What can you do?

Our hand-held devices are used for far more than fun or socialising. They are a necessity in the everyday, and going without them is equivalent to shirking sleep or food. But for health and balance in our lives, we must.

I am guilty of being tethered, even when I have the chance to disconnect.

What if someone needs to reach me urgently? What if something happens to one of my elderly parents?

We know emergencies are unlikely to happen in this particular window of time. We know that if they did, we would find out soon enough, just as we did in times past. But even when My Beloved – the One who matters most to me – is nearby, my phone is kept within reach.

We all come up with excuses galore, reasoning our phones are now our camera, our eftpos access, our diary. They are our hold-all, our everything. But really, the core of it is our addiction. Experts say

the phone addiction works on the same part of the brain as alcohol or drugs, playing on our weakest points, tricking us into not being able to do without it. It contributes to mental ill-health, poor sleep and (strangely) social disconnection.

The attention paid is out of control: a message from a beau during a bike ride needs an instant response; a friend posts a cute picture and a return emoji simply can’t wait. We recently had a friend staying who was incapable of being away from her phone even when she stated her need to work on being present in the moment with the real people around her.

It was a struggle – her eyes flicking to her mini screen or her hand flying to the device whenever something amazing/ fun/pretty occurred. A beautiful sunrise was viewed through a lens. A smiling friend was captured virtually instead of savoured immediately.

My favourite addictive behaviour with phones is the face plant. Addicts place their phones screen-side down, as if they are attentive to the conversation, but have hair-trigger reflexes at the sound of a notification. Rest assured, the world will turn without you recording its rotation.

There are two things that should be banned but won’t be until there is a major catastrophe: vaping and electric scooters.

I have seen someone doing both –vaping and riding – at once, which was really scary. Now the vaping thing is probably a bit like drinking alcohol: you are just harming yourself, unless of course it has an impact on others. I don’t like the vaping thing but I guess we all have vices.

Electric scooters, however, are way out of control. Just the other day, I was on my motorbike and got eyeballed by two circa 15-year-olds at the shopping centre car park after dark. They were sitting on milk crates on scooters, in T-shirts and thongs. Admittedly, I smiled and shook my head as I passed them.

About a minute down the road, I was sitting on 60kmh when I saw a small headlight behind me rapidly approaching.

It came up beside me and, you guessed it – milk crate boy. I yelled out, ‘How fast does that thing go?’ and he replied: ‘Ninety’ and then turned around and left. I guess he was just showing me what he could do, but, wow! What if he fell

off or, even worse, got hit by a car? Now this is the case with a lot of them: young kids riding way too fast on bike paths and roads, some with no lights and a lot with a sh*t attitude about it being everyone else’s job to dodge them. Older people, small children and dogs are definitely in mortal danger on footpaths.

But even worse is the motorist. Every day, I have one or a number of e-scooter riders cross the road in front of me, with no regard for their own safety. There are and will lives lost and destroyed. Parents will want answers and motorists will be traumatised. Some will be guilty of something and others completely innocent but all will have to carry some pretty heavy baggage for the rest of their lives. If you say anything, a fair proportion give you ‘the bird’ or call you a paedophile, so it is a no-win situation. Of course, there are plenty of adult bodyinfant brains riding around like idiots, too. While the Premier is stumbling around youth crime, she should throw scooters into the mix. The situation needs fixing because we are heading for drama as quickly as the kid on the milk crate.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US

Sami Muirhead knows conspiracy theorists seem like they’re from a different planet but she secretly loves their wacky and weird stories.

Big space news broke recently, with NASA unveiling the crew for its first human mission to the Moon in more than 50 years.

For the first time, a female will be part of a space crew. Christina Koch, a NASA astronaut who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, will be a mission specialist on next year’s Artemis 11 flight.

She will be alongside Victor Glover, the first African American man to take part in a lunar mission. This is very welcome progress, indeed. Only 12 people – all of them white men – have set foot on the Moon. I love a story of gender and race barriers being smashed and I am always partial to space stories.

There is something so awe-inspiring about our quest to enter other galaxies.

Since I was a child, I have been obsessed with stargazing and moon swaying. But I did laugh out loud when I read the news, as I have a few conspiracyobsessed friends who, of course, swear we have never stepped on the Moon.

One mate, who I have nicknamed Conspiracy Clive, brings me ‘evidence’ on a weekly basis to try to convince me of his wild accusation that Princess Diana’s

death was not accidental, but that the People’s Princess was indeed murdered.

I know many others around the world also believe this theory. I just plain do not believe it.

Truth be told, I am struggling most days to get out the door and keep my children alive to be bothered going down a rabbit hole of wacky and weird stories.

Another theory that I hear about most days from Conspiracy Clive is that we should all be wrapping our mobile phones in alfoil to stop spies from tracking us and radiation from entering our bodies.

My buddy brags to me loudly and proudly about all sorts of wickedly wonderful plots, despite my eye rolling and heavy sighing.

Old Conspiracy Clive doesn’t need to drink to tell me these mind-blowing tall tales. He does not do mind-altering drugs and he is mentally sane. I love that he walks to the beat of his own drum.

Wouldn’t it be a boring world if we all believed the same stories? His theories frustrate me on a bad day but, most days, I secretly love them. Still, I will not be anywhere near him the day history is created when that mission to the Moon is launched.

AUSTRALIA LEADS THE WAY IN HYBRID SECURITIES

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority on March 19 announced that all Credit Suisse’s Additional Tier 1 (AT1) securities would be entirely written down to zero, under investment banking company UBS’s takeover of the global investment bank and financial services company.

Credit Suisse shareholders will still receive some residual value.

The Tier 2 and senior non-preferred securities remain unaffected.

At first glance, this would seem to go against the principle that AT1 holders are more senior in the capital structure than shareholders. However, after considering the terms of these instruments, it becomes apparent that the situation reflects the specific provisions of the Credit Suisse securities, rather than a fundamental change in the approach of banking regulators.

Specifically, the terms and conditions of Credit Suisse’s AT1 incorporate two clear provisions:

1. ‘All-or-nothing’ write-down provision: Once authorities were satisfied that a write-off trigger had been met, the only outcome was to write off all the value of AT1 securities.

2. Extraordinary government intervention provision: AT1 instruments

do not typically include specific provisions allowing a write-off in the event of extraordinary government intervention. Further, the terms and conditions of Credit Suisse’s AT1 securities exclude a common equity conversion option – hence a write-down of the Credit Suisse AT1 securities are evidently an exception to the rule, rather than the norm.

Following this event, we saw a sell-off in the Australian bank hybrid market. Local hybrids had been performing well to this point, as investors captured the benefits of rising interest rates which boosted distribution payments.

Pleasingly, Australian bank hybrids have many fundamentally different features to the Credit Suisse Hybrids (and European hybrids more broadly). In the event of an Australian bank failure requiring a government bail-out, Australian AT1 securities convert to ordinary equity, diluting shareholders, rather than being written off. The conversion can be partial or full (the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority will determine the amount of equity the bank requires).

A write-down of Australian hybrids would only occur if the equity conversion could not be implemented. It is also important to note that no Australian bank or hybrid has ever been bailed-in or written-off, in comparison to Europe, where this is a common occurrence.

Furthermore, no Australian bank or insurer has ever missed a coupon payment on hybrid securities, and they commonly refinance their hybrids on their first available call date.

DULUX COLOUR FORECAST 2023 CONNECT PALETTE AUTUMN STYLING TIPS

This autumn, Dulux colour forecasters predict the warm neutrals and muted yellow-greens in Connect – one of three palettes identified in the Dulux Colour Forecast 2023 – will take centre stage.

Up the texture: For a cosy and comfortable feel, mix soft-touch, tactile fabrics such as linens, velvets, corduroy, shearling and soft leather.

Take in the view: Do you have a beautiful backyard outlook? Make it a highlight by keeping window coverings to a minimum or dispensing with them altogether.

Wrap the room: For a truly enveloping feeling, run your chosen room colour onto the ceiling as well.

Go big with rugs: Furniture in large, open-plan spaces can sometimes look lost. To define clear living and dining zones, add large floor rugs.

Try something different: To keep your existing wall colours but still experiment with the Dulux Connect colours, try painting small furniture pieces, such as side tables, planters or vases, and then add in cushions and throws in similar tones. Use the palette as your decorating scheme.

HELP WITH THE NDIS PROCESS

Barry wasn’t sleeping well at night. His NDIS funding was close to being exhausted and the support he was receiving no longer met his needs.

He was spending too much time at home as his funding for social and community participation depleted.

This, in turn, led to a sharp decline in

Barry’s mental health. Concern was voiced by his carer.

It was also getting harder and harder for Barry to get out of his car at venues and this stopped him from attending activities he had previously enjoyed.

Barry met up with Amelia and after a preliminary chat, he commenced support coordination with Suncare.

Amelia arranged for Barry to obtain a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) with a local occupational therapist and was there to support Barry during the meeting. A FCA analyses a person’s performance in day-to-day activities around the home. The assessment summarises limitations and proposes intervention in the forms of equipment, therapy, home modifications, aids and appliances or other capacity-building or daily living-support needs. All Barry needed was someone to guide him through the process and support him in finding the best outcomes.

After the FCA report and supportive evidence were submitted, the NDIS approved additional funding for Barry and soon he was back at his backgammon and card groups.

The additional funding also allowed him some vehicle modifications and Barry was able to drive safely and easily to the community centres and activity halls.

“I am enjoying my life again and am feeling great,” Barry says.

If, like Barry, you could use some extra support to review and utilise your NDIS package, visit suncare.org.au/ services/ndis/ or call 1800 786 227.

A new disability employment pilot is one step closer to reality, with the federal government signing an agreement with a major business group this year to deliver the program.

Currently, 2.1 million Australians with a disability are of working age, but only 53 per cent are in the labour workforce, compared with 84 per cent of people without a disability. It’s a wide gap that hasn’t changed in 28 years.

The pilot, which has been co-designed by people living with disability, aims to close the gap in employment and create more inclusive employment opportunities.

The government committed $3.3 million following the national jobs and skills summit in September last year.

The Business Council of Australia has now signed on to create and implement the pilot.

“We know 93 per cent of working-age people with disability face difficulties finding work due to the lack of suitable employment and perceived limitations of their disability,” Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth says.

The collaboration is expected to improve employment outcomes while also testing new ways to drive organisational cultural change.

New Zealand has long been a favourite travel destination for Australians of all ages. The sheer variety of activities, experiences and dining options make it ideal for families and couples looking for a bespoke getaway.

Starting at the heart of downtown Auckland, a great way to start your North Island experience is to head down to the harbour.

The harbour has been extensively redeveloped in recent years and boasts carefully curated public spaces amid a great array of dining options that can be found throughout the precinct.

Adventure seekers will love bungy jumping off Sky Tower or the Harbour Bridge or hiking and canyoning through some of the most picturesque rainforests in the world.

For a unique day trip, hop on a ferry and visit Waiheke Island.

This haven of beautiful vineyards, olive groves and pristine beaches is also home to stunning galleries and art walks and provides some of the most beautiful views back to Auckland.

Exploring Uluru and uncovering the sights and sounds of this amazing destination is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many Australians.

If you are seeking a holiday destination that will create memories to last a lifetime, with plenty of magical experiences, then look no further than Uluru.

As a destination, Uluru offers a variety of experiences for all travellers. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is a short drive from

Voyages Uluru Resort. You can choose to do a guided base tour, cycle around the base track of Uluru or, for the adventurous traveller, explore on a guided Segway tour.

The spectacular Field of Lights, designed by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro, is another incredible experience on offer. We recommend buying the Star Pass, where you enjoy drinks and canapes as you watch the changing colours of Uluru at sunset. As darkness falls, the Field of Lights illuminates, providing a

wonderful display in a spectacular location.

At the magical Sounds of Silence dinner, guests dine under a million stars in a stunning desert location.

At sunrise, see the transformation of Uluru and the kaleidoscope of colours as the desert awakens with Uluru and Kata Tjuta as the backdrop. We highly recommend a camel ride at sunrise or sunset for a true outback desert experience.

You can also take a helicopter ride to enjoy Uluru and Kata Tjuta from the sky or fly to Kings Canyon. If you love to explore by foot, numerous walks are on offer in the national park. The Valley of the Winds trail at Kata Tjuta offers incredible views of rugged scenery and beautiful rock formations.

After exploring Uluru, take the time to enjoy Voyages Uluru Resort.

Accommodation options include Sails in the Desert, Desert Gardens Hotel, Emu Walk Apartments, and the Lost Camel Hotel. Sit by the hotel pool with a cocktail, take part in the free activities or stroll through the Gallery of Central Australia to admire and buy Indigenous artwork. Whatever you decide to do on your travels in Uluru, you are guaranteed a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20)

It’s action stations, as Jupiter and the solar eclipse turbo-charge your motivation and boost determination. If you’re lacking confidence (and feel more like a meek lamb than a courageous ram), then spend time with an uber-Aries friend and activate your fiery sun.

LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)

On Thursday there’s a fiery solar eclipse in your adventure zone, which is good for travel, exploration and exciting new beginnings. But relationships with loved ones or colleagues could be stressful as Pluto squares the sun, which boosts your bossy streak.

With your sparky Sagittarian mojo and momentum running on high speed, you’re ready to rock and roll. Jupiter (your power planet) and the solar eclipse activate your leisure-and-pleasure zone. So all forms of entertainment will appeal as you enjoy yourself to the max.

WORDSTEP

Complete the list by changing one letter at a time to create a new word at each step. One possible answer shown below.

TAURUS

(APR 21-MAY 21)

People are looking to you for leadership. Taurus is a fixed sign and you can be a bossy, stubborn bull. Aim to be more adaptable and adventurous this week, as you focus attention on helping those around you. Being of service to others sees you glow on the inside.

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)

Mercury turns retrograde from Friday until May 15. So, even though there’s a new moon/solar eclipse on Thursday, it’s not an appropriate week to expedite tasks, initiate ideas or race ahead with projects. Instead, use the time wisely to research and review.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)

This week’s fiery solar eclipse promises a fresh start involving family plans, a domestic situation, a revamped living space or a new housemate. But the difficult sun/ Pluto square – and Mercury turning retrograde – could delay a project or exacerbate a misunderstanding.

1. What is the largest train station in the UK?

2. In relation to trees, what does deciduous mean?

3. Pedro Pascal (pictured) starred alongside Nicolas Cage in which 2022 film?

4. Which continent are capybaras native to?

5. What type of food is a chimichanga?

6. The book cataloguing website Goodreads was launched in which year?

7. Is Paraguay a landlocked or coastal country?

GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21)

This week Venus (in your sign) and Mars (in your money zone) stimulate your urge to splurge on extravagant purchases that you don’t really need. So perhaps it would be best for clever twins to avoid spontaneous spending sprees … in person and online.

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

This week positivity planet Jupiter and the solar eclipse energise your relationship zone, so you’re keen to motivate, encourage and inspire others. But are you barking up the wrong tree? The weekend stars favour reflection, relaxation and listening to your inner voice.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

The big challenge this week is the sun/Pluto square on Thursday, which could reactivate a festering family issue that’s been brewing. Tonnes of Aquarian tact will get you through. When it comes to an ongoing neighbourhood problem, think global and act local.

8. True or false: Ötzi the Iceman, a natural mummy from 3105 BC, had tattoos?

9. The world’s first electric tram line operated in which country?

10. Hazard signs are typically black symbols on what colour triangular background?

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23)

Avoid being a lonesome crab. Professional projects and creative collaborations are favoured, as you spark ideas off each other and pool your talents. The solar eclipse and Jupiter increase enthusiasm and encourage rebooting a work relationship.

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

Jump off the comfy couch. This week’s dynamic stars encourage you to be proudly proactive as you get your body moving, set challenging daily goals and then actively pursue them. Not sure how to do that? Try rubbing shoulders with your kick-ass Aries friends.

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)

Jupiter and the solar eclipse shine a light on your self-esteem. So steer clear of criticism (in person and online); avoid letting negative self-talk drag you down, and stop worrying about the qualities you perceive you don’t have. Be your number one fan.

Waterfront Residences Burnett Heads

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON MARINA AS PART OF DESIRABLE WATERFRONT RESIDENTIAL PRECINCT

S

tage 1 of marina construction at BH Development’s The Gateway, Burnett Heads. is progressing rapidly.Dredging is now complete on the landmark residential, marina and commercial project. The first 91 marina berths are due for completion by the end of 2023, with the first residences expected to be ready in late 2024.

BH Developments (Qld) director Simon Harvey says the company is thrilled with progress to date.

“The dredging program has been challenging at times but our team has done a fantastic job,” he says.

“The marina will not only be a wonderful outlook for our residence purchasers, but also a unique opportunity for boat owners, as well as a valuable asset for the region.”

The Gateway Residences marketing agent, Property and Estates principal Rick Williams, says of the project: “If you wanted to describe the perfect waterfront residential lifestyle experience, it would be hard to go past

The Gateway residences at Burnett Heads. Think of two buildings, each comprising 23 absolutely prestigious two-, three- and four-bedroom residences over five levels, north facing and overlooking a 318-berth marina and the Coral Sea beyond.

“Think about the opportunity to secure your own private marina berth and, with that, access to the boating mecca that is the southern (Great) Barrier Reef, featuring the nearby Lady

Elliot and Lady Musgrave islands.

“Think of your residence set amongst a boutique harbourfront village featuring waterfront boardwalk, retail boutiques, cafes, restaurants and marina services and just 15 minutes from Bundaberg and Bargara – all just four-and-a-half-hours’ drive north of Brisbane.”

Mr Williams notes that at a recent on-site information day, more than 100 local, Southeast Queensland and interstate residents attended.

“The Gateway Residences are a truly unique offering and the interest and inquiries we are receiving certainly reflect this,” he says.

“While we have no doubt that The Gateway will emerge as a dress-circle residential precinct for the Bundaberg region (40 per cent of buyers to date are locals), it is clear that what we have to offer is proving to be of interest to a much-wider buyer audience.

“Opportunities to deliver a marina along the Australian seaboard are rare – particularly one with integrated residential and located well away from the northern coast weather extremes.”

Why creating competition is vital

The Sunshine Coast property market has experienced unprecedented growth, continuing to attract local, state and national attention despite the global pandemic.

And while soaring interest rates continue to impact mortgage holders, the Coast’s property market is still one of the most attractive in the country.

So, how do vendors ensure their property shines amongst the rest? More importantly, how can they secure the best possible price?

Agent of 32 years Ross Cattle says the only way to secure a premium price for your property is to create competition. The key is to adopt a holistic, well-planned marketing approach.

“It’s always important to reach every potential buyer and the only way to do this is to work with an agent who understands the value of a multi-faceted marketing strategy,” he says.

“Adopting a solo online marketing campaign can narrow your exposure. Remarketing, database and print publications play a major role in increasing this exposure to a wider audience. More exposure creates competition by attracting more buyers, which in turn, secures a higher price.

“This is why my philosophy, which forms part of the DNA of our sales team, is to use the biggest net to catch the most fish. Yes, it requires more work on our behalf, but it leaves no stone unturned.”

Ross says while COVID did impact agents and the overall

industry to some degree, the market was bolstered in 2021.

“The attendance to open homes and auctions was huge. Our auction success rate climbed to perfect numbers, but I could see the mistakes being made in the overall market by agents and agencies, and I wanted to make sure we didn’t make the same mistakes. This mistake was the act of selling too fast.

“It was costing vendors hundreds of thousands of dollars. Owners mistakenly thought that selling in one day was a great result.

21. uge. t I t make o fast. lars. great

“In reality, selling quickly weakens the result. We advised owners to adopt a four-week strategy that had extensive reach through not just the local community, but the country. By doing this, we created a platform for multiple buyers to bid openly against each other via auction and this resulted in great success for everyone.

“When I sit down with a seller who is going to the market and I explain what we do and why, it’s an easy step forward to signing the agency agreement. When you understand the reasons our team at Define is able to achieve such success, it’s then you can truly understand the effects of good marketing, and the effects of poor marketing.

Thinking of selling? With 32 years of experience in the Sunshine Coast’s property industry, Ross is able to help you build a strong marketing campaign.

ROSS’ TIPS FOR SMART SELLING

1. Create competition with a multi-faceted marketing approach. The bigger the pool of buyers, the better the outcome for the vendor.

2. Commit to a four-week sales strategy. Remember, speed kills. Selling fast can leave money on the table, but cheap marketing campaigns also contribute to low sale prices.

The story of Define

3. Treat your sales campaign like a puzzle – you need to find the right piece for it all to come together. To do that you need to explore all options – street marketing, remarketing, print advertising, online advertising, open homes, and the ability to be flexible with viewings.

17 years & counting...

Principal Ross Cattle had a vision – to define himself as a market leader in the real estate industry. This motivation to shape a real estate office on the Sunshine Coast that excels at every level has been achieved with the establishment of Define Property Agents.

Define Property’s firm commitment to professionalism and attention to detail with uncompromised strategic marketing, genuine client service, superior sales and negotiation skills guarantees a successful outcome for buyers and sellers at any price level. Time to get blown away with some universal trivia.

In the slice of the universe that we can see, there are two trillion (or 2000 billion) galaxies.

Each galaxy consists of roughly 400 billion stars. If you were to travel at the speed of light, it would take you 100,000 years to cross one galaxy.

We really only represent a grain of sand on the beach.

So, share waves, be kind and remember: you are not here for long! Have a great weekend.
