From the editor
Iwish I was a green thumb, but if I’m being honest, I am clearly lacking in talent when it comes to gardening ability.
I really admire those who are keen gardeners. My mother-in-law is a seasoned enthusiast who always seems to know what to plant, where and at what time of year. Her gardens are immaculate – blooming with bright colours and perfectly manicured lawns.
Unfortunately, her years of advice have not rubbed off on me yet, but I’m not giving up hope. Whether you’re a prolific green thumb or a complete beginner like me, the Queensland Garden Expo has something for everyone.
To be held from July 7-9 at the Nambour Showgrounds, the three-day event presents displays, stalls, experts and demonstrations for people of all ages and stages. Boasting more than 360 exhibitors, this year’s program is shaping up to be one of the best yet, with 40,000 people expected. Turn to page 12 for all the details.
Until next week, enjoy the read.

3 TIPS TO BUILD YOUR WEALTH
• Don’t pay for what you don’t need or aren’t using. Don’t waste money on gym memberships or streaming subscriptions you are rarely using. You can easily join back up again if you find a show or movie you want to watch. Sharing subscriptions can also be a great way to save some cash.
• Don’t pay too much for what you do need. Loyalty doesn’t pay when it comes to financial products. From energy to broadband internet and insurance, it’s always worth comparing and shopping around for a better deal.
• Track your expenses. Take a look at your transactions for the past few months and what you’re spending on living expenses versus everything else. Money management apps – such as the free Finder app – can help you see your income and expenses all in a single place. From there, you should be able to find opportunities to cut back on your spending and work out how much you can realistically save each month.
CONQUERING A MOUNTAIN OF PERSONAL DEBT
A few simple changes could help you pay-down loans and credit cards and cut back expenses to improve your financial health.
Millions of Australians are struggling with a mountain of personal debt, new research by Finder shows.
A Finder survey of 1079 respondents revealed the average Australian now has
$20,238 in debt spread across consumer loans and credit cards (this debt does not include mortgages). That’s more than $70 billion in personal debt nationwide.
This is up from $18,301 a year ago – an 11 per cent spike in only 12 months.
Finder’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker reveals that the average Aussie with each respective type of debt carries $1948 in credit card debt, $6920 in personal loan debt and $11,370 in car loan debt.
Amy Bradney-George, personal finance expert at Finder, says the skyrocketing cost of living has forced many Aussies to borrow money just to pay for essentials.
“A significant number of people are having to turn to credit cards, buy-nowpay-later services and personal loans in order to cover day-to-day expenses like food and electricity,” she says.
“With inflation at an all-time high, debt is making it even more stressful for
people to put food on their tables.”
Finder data shows 54 per cent of Australians have a credit card as of May 2023 – the equivalent of 10.9 million people. Just over one-in-seven Aussies (14 per cent) currently have a personal loan (the equivalent of 2.8 million people), while the same proportion have a car loan.
Separate research from Finder reveals 30 per cent of Australians are ‘extremely’ stressed about their current financial situation – up from 22 per cent at this time 12 months ago.
That’s a staggering 6.1 million Aussies who are under enormous financial strain.
Ms Bradney-George says there are fears it could get worse as households continue to face rising interest rates and inflation.
“Debt can quickly get out of control and lead to bigger financial difficulties,” she says. “When you are struggling to ‘pay off the past’, it stops you from saving for the future.”
Ms Bradney-George urges households to break up with debt.
“Contact your providers to see if you can set up a payment plan that fits with your income,” she says.
“If your circumstances have changed, you can also talk to your bank’s hardship support team about different options such as payment pauses.
“You could also shop around for better rates or consider debt consolidation to help manage repayments.”
She says now is the time to protect your financial health and credit score.
“Failing to pay off debt can damage your credit score which makes a bigger mess in the long run,” she says. “If you’re overwhelmed by debt, you can also get free financial counselling by calling the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.”

A GROWING CROP OF EXPO FANS
There’s a little something for all ages at this much-anticipated annual event on the gardening calendar. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa
The Sunshine Coast is set to bloom for a ‘long weekend’ full of colour, beauty and fun as the region hosts one of its most anticipated expos of the year.
The Queensland Garden Expo is one of Australia’s most-loved gardening events and attracts more than 40,000 people through its gates each year.
Whether you’re an enthusiastic green thumb or a complete garden rookie, the three-day event presents displays, stalls and demonstrations for people of all ages and gardening stages.
This year, gates will open on July 7 when more than 360 exhibitors will have everything gardening related on offer, including one of the largest ranges of plants in Queensland and all the latest in permaculture growing.
The event’s finely curated speaker program includes more than 125 free lectures, as well as demonstrations by some of Australia’s most-respected gardening experts.
Event manager Marion Beazley says the expo features favourites including the ABC’s Gardening Australia presenters Costa Georgiadis, Sophie Thomson, Jerry Coleby-Williams and Millie Ross.
She says the 2023 event also will include celebrity chef Matt Golinski and domestic poultry experts from across Australia, who will share their extensive knowledge on keeping and caring for domestic chickens.
“We are proud to host Australia’s largest gardening speaker program at the expo, with 45 speakers across eight stages over three days,” Ms Beazley says.
“This year, we have much of our gardening royalty headlining the program, as well as an incredible array of other gardening experts covering a wide range of topics.
“Of course, we are delighted to confirm that Costa will join us again this year.
“He first joined our speaker line-up in 2011 and his charm, energy, exceptional
knowledge of all things gardening and permaculture and ever-increasing profile on the small screen have earned him a substantial following and a somewhat iconic status at the expo – with old and young visitors alike.
“Costa will once again spend much time in the popular Kitchen Garden, including a garden ramble and special sessions for the young gardeners on the Terraces when he dons his goggles and becomes Costa the Garden Gnome.”
Aside from being a horticulturalist, author and TV presenter, Ms Thomson is also a trained naturopath.
During the expo, she will present: “How cool is your garden? Every garden can make a difference in mitigating the urban heat island effect”.
Ms Thomson’s session will offer insights into designing gardens that reduce urban heat and create a comfortable environment.
“As governments around the world look at ways they can reduce the effects of
the urban heat island effect, every home gardener can adopt simple ways to green up and cool down their backyard, making it more liveable and productive,” Ms Thomson says.
“I am excited to be back at the Queensland Garden Expo and connect with the keen gardeners attending.”
Other popular speakers on the program this year include Phil Dudman, known as ‘The Garden Guru’.
Mr Dudman is a horticulturalist and landscaper that fronted a noisy 1980s grunge rock band before becoming the horticultural editor of Gardening Australia magazine.
Brisbane’s Claire Bickle will also share her wealth of knowledge on indoor plants, creating happy habitat gardens to attract native fauna.
The 2023 Queensland Garden Expo is on from July 7 to 9 at the Nambour Showgrounds. Buy tickets and see the full program of speakers at qldgardenexpo. com.au.

PRAYERS OF HOMELESS YOUTH ANSWERED
A new Sunshine Coast accommodation complex will give young people a fresh start in life and support their employment goals.
Homeless young people will have a roof over their heads and expert support to help them build successful lives, after the official opening of The Old Church Youth Accommodation at Nambour last week.
Service (IFYS) refurbished the former meetinghouse complex of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in response to inadequate accommodation options across the region for young people trying to transition away from homelessness.
youth, each with a full ensuite, splitsystem air-conditioner, new paint and carpet, and a window.
IFYS operates a six-bed crisis facility for young people in need on the Sunshine Coast, and a further five beds in Caboolture, so The Old Church dramatically increases the available support to those in need.
“In bringing back the church, we will offer 21 safe and secure beds to young people aged 16 to 24 across the Sunshine Coast,” IFYS managing director Tony Pignata told guests at the opening.
“The Old Church is an integrated model that combined biological, cultural, economic, physiological and social factors.
“It cuts across a number of disciplines and ensures young people are not only being protected from the elements, but they are offered holistic support and care to ensure that we move them from homelessness to a position of being educated or employed – a significant protective factor in anyone’s life.
“The model will be supported 24/7 by staff, and will have a focus on education and employment and social interactions for those young people.
and some independent life skills, which to you and I might be incredible, but it’ll be things like washing their sheets, washing their clothes, having some idea of nutrition and to be able to cook for themselves.”
The facility and support program aims to help young people to build careers and to ultimately transition to their own accommodation. Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien officially opened the facilities on June 29.
Mr O’Brien had announced $790,834 in Australian government funding for the project in April 2022, to provide support for residents with a particular focus on ‘learning and earning’ activities to strengthen a young person’s employment options.
“Many people came to this very facility over the years to offer prayers and, in the future, young people will come to this same facility to have their prayers answered, and I think that’s pretty special,” Mr O’Brien said at the opening.
Mr Pignata noted the high levels of homelessness among youth on the Sunshine Coast, adding that a safe and caring environment is vital to help young people live and build better lives and become active and functioning members of our community.

FEEDING A DIRE NEED
A major philanthropic grant will support an emergency service in helping vulnerable families in the region put food on the table.
The Buderim Foundation Thompson Charitable Fund is helping Sunshine Coast families in need by providing a $100,000 grant to Gateway Care Food Centre for vital food relief.
Buderim Foundation chair Rod McKinnon says Gateway Care Food Centre plays a vital role in providing emergency food relief to families in crisis and those
experiencing financial hardship on the Sunshine Coast.
“The Buderim Foundation’s Thompson Charitable Fund is proud to support the Gateway Care Food Centre and their Food Rescue Program,” Mr McKinnon says.
Gateway Care chair Lani Refiti says the Gateway Care Food Centre is a nondenominational community organisation run entirely by volunteers.
Flights on
“It currently spends approximately $15,000 per week on food items, ensuring that families in need have access to vital nourishment, and over 50 per cent of these purchases are freely delivered to Sunshine Coast families experiencing financial difficulties,” Mr Refiti says.
“Currently, Gateway Care supports approximately 300 welfare recipient families daily, with approximately 20 per cent of them facing severe financial crisis.
“The assistance we provide is often the difference between survival and despair for these vulnerable families, and this grant will enable us to support the growing number of families during the current cost of living crisis.”
Gateway clients find the service a huge support. One member, Sharon, who has been going to Gateway for over 10 years, says the service is vital.
“When I first became a member, I was experiencing some big emotional and life trauma,” Sharon says. “I had two young children and no income. Life was challenging. It was nice to have somewhere to come that made me feel okay. If it wasn’t for Gateway, I don’t know how I would have been able to feed my children.”
Mr McKinnon says the grant to Gateway Care represents the type of assistance that the Thompson Charitable Fund seeks to provide to people facing
financial hardship and in dire need throughout the region.
The Buderim Foundation has been the Trustee for the Thompson Charitable Fund since April 2021. Over the past two years, a rolling grants program has provided $246,950 to nine organisations to support people experiencing homelessness and financial distress on the Coast.
The $100,000 grant will include two payments of $50,000, each across a three-month period. The first payment has already been provided and is already making a difference.
The Buderim Foundation is a philanthropic organisation which harnesses the power of giving by generating income from donations and bequests and providing grants for worthwhile community projects.
In addition to the Thompson Charitable Fund, the Buderim Foundation runs a separate community grants program supporting projects benefiting the local Buderim area.

LOOK BACK TO THE FUTURE
Historic country charm is what greets visitors to a quaint Sunshine Coast town, thanks to a vibrant new streetscape.
Woombye’s Blackall Street has received an upgrade, transforming the community’s vision for an attractive and vibrant township, while honouring its golden charm.
Sunshine Coast Council Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston says that since November 2020, extensive
community engagement has informed the streetscape design to deliver a central space for the community to gather in front of the School of Arts Hall.
He says the upgrades include new landscaping, seating areas and improvements to pedestrian facilities.
“The Woombye Heritage Trail is a source of great pride for the local community, and I am excited to see the completed streetscape works honour the town’s unique story,” Cr Johnston says.
“This upgrade includes shady street trees and garden beds planted to cool the footpath, beautify and extend the green, leafy look and feel to the west of the town centre.”
In 2018, Woombye celebrated 150 years since the first Cobb & Co. coach commenced the Brisbane to Gympie journey. Throughout the streetscaping project, the council collaborated with the Woombye Community and Business Association and the Woombye Heritage Group to embed this heritage into the facelift.
Woombye Community and Business Association vice-president Grant Palethorpe says the community is thrilled to see the project completed and honour the town’s history.
“The Woombye community is very proud of its heritage and delighted to share the area’s wonderful story with locals and visitors,” Mr Palethorpe says.
“It is a true celebration to see the Woombye Heritage Trail come to life through this collaborative streetscape project and we encourage everyone to explore the trail and all that the town has to offer.”
This project has been funded by the state government’s South-East Queensland Community Stimulus Program, in association with the council.
POSITIVE IMPACT OF BEACH ACCESSIBILITY PROGRAM
New University of the Sunshine Coast research has confirmed the positive impact of assistive technology that allows people with disabilities to access and use the beach.
Sunshine Coast Council has run an Accessible Beach Program at Mooloolaba and Coolum surf lifesaving clubs for several years. It is continually seeking new ways to improve the program, and options to expand into more locations. While beach-assistive technologies such as beach wheelchairs and matting have been anecdotally well-received, Dr Michele Verdonck says it has only scratched the surface in understanding the full scope of the impact.
“This research confirms some of the things we assumed – namely that getting to the beach is valued and people with disabilities should be allowed to get onto the beach and participate in beach leisure just like everyone else does,” Dr Verdonck says.
Several users reported that it allowed them to enjoy being “a part of Australian culture” and has given them access to “a normal life”. The study also highlighted significant hurdles still facing those with physical impairments from using the beach, including often bulky equipment.

UNCOVERING THE ‘WOW’
The Australian Wearable Art Festival (AWAF), to be held on August 11 and 12, is shaping up to be one of the must-attend arts events on the Sunshine Coast. And now two exciting artists have been secured as judges for the unique extravaganza –where fashion and art converge.
One of the judges, Brisbane local Bethany Cordwell, achieved international notoriety when Beyoncé wore her black-and-white bodysuit – made out of
55,000 hand-cut plastic office binders –for the Renaissance album artwork in 2022. Then, using this technique, Ms Cordwell went on to win the Avant Garde category at last year’s World of Wearable Art Festival (WOW).
“Wearable art is such a unique platform where sculptural form, technique, wearability and the ‘wow’ factor all play such an important part in delivering a winning piece,” Ms Cordwell says.
“Garments exhibited at the festival are crafted from a range of unlikely materials, including in the past ring-pull tabs, bicycle tyres, flowers, teabags, feathers and all sorts of found or repurposed objects, which have been transformed into avant-garde pieces.”
Fifi Colston, a world-class artist and creative from Wellington in New Zealand, brings her award-winning expertise as an illustrator, writer and costume and props maker to the AWAF judging panel.
“I have been creating wearable art for more than 25 years and over that time, I have watched designers move away from largely costume-based, fairly literal solutions and instead use the medium as an exciting canvas for both performance and static exhibition,” Ms Colston says.
“It’s an exciting time for wearable art designers as they push the boundaries of art, fashion and costume design.”
Festival curator Wendy Roe says she is proud the event stands at the forefront of the Australian wearable art movement, providing a platform for artists and designers to showcase their creations.
This year’s event will feature 40 national and international works showcased on a 27-metre catwalk and spanning three shows.

Budget supports local facilities
This year’s big-ticket Sunshine Coast Council Budget items for the area.
These include: $9.12 million for the Kawana Waters Regional Aquatic Centre; more than $3 million to prepare for the future expansion of Sunshine Coast Stadium; and $14.35 million for the evolution of the Honey Farm Road Sports Precinct.
I’m very pleased to announce the 2023-24 Budget includes $4.2 million to implement the Kawana Regional Aquatic Centre Master Plan Report. This will enhance its capacity to a regional-level facility and form part of the Kawana Waters Regional Sport Precinct. The master plan will also incorporate the proposed outdoor stadium and indoor stadium.
Bok Beach basketball boost
Local residents have requested more recreational equipment for teenagers to be included in the basketball half-court in
the Bokarina Beach parkland. This facility has been given a top-up in this year’s Budget, which will now see it delivered pre-Christmas.
There will also be a $913,000 investment in improving our other parks, which are well loved and used across Division 3. These works vary from refurbishing picnic areas to renewing playgrounds and installing drinking fountains.
Improving pedestrian safety
Minor capital works projects have attracted a substantial investment of $1.25 million for the region.
This includes $350,000 for Beerburrum Street, Aroona’s signalised pedestrian crossing, which addresses the safety concerns of local school students, as well as making Ridgehaven Park more accessible.
About $500,000 has also been allocated for new pathways and replacing existing ones – an important spend to keep residents connected and safe. For a full list of Division 3 projects, visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/budget.

BECOMING A CLEANER, GREENER DESTINATION
This month, Visit Sunshine Coast launched a destination-wide sustainability program that unites our tourism industry with visitors to remove carbon emissions through local reforestation projects.
It’s been close to a year in the making to develop this Australian-first concept that will help make the Sunshine Coast cleaner and greener.
As Kermit the Frog once said, “It’s not easy being green”, and the goal of our program is to make it super easy for our visitors and the tourism industry to make a real and meaningful difference to sustainability here in the region.
This is done by visitors using our customised Trip C02 Calculator to understand the carbon footprint from their trip, with options for them to then contribute towards restoring local
ecosystems. Visitors can choose to plant trees at a site in Cooroy and another in Caloundra that is managed by Sunshine Coast Council, which has partnered with us on the program.
In time, these sites will be restored to their natural habitat and once again be thriving homes for our precious local wildlife.
This program helps our visitors to preserve the environment and way of life that we all love on the Sunshine Coast. How can you help?
If you have friends coming to stay, then why not point them in the direction of our simple Trip C02 Calculator to get them participating in the program.
They can then remove the emissions from their trip by buying a tree to restore local ecosystems.
With that, it’s never been easier to be green.
So, help spread the word about this fabulous new sustainability initiative.

SIZING UP THE FASHION LABELS
Jane Stephens says buying clothes these days is a minefield of inconsistent measurements, sliding numbers and sight-unseen purchases.
There is no standard sizing for clothing in Australia and inch by inch, the scale is sliding, so we can feel a little better about ourselves.
Fifteen years ago, the Australian Standard Size Coding Scheme was scrapped and the onus was shifted to retailers, who could develop their own sizing scales based on their marketing and sales data.
There were a couple of goes at bringing a standard back, but it is always hard to regather that which has been set free.
For the buyer, it feels like lotto, with brands free to pluck numbers out of the air so that a size 8 in one can be a size 12 in another. There is also “vanity sizing”: labelling clothes as smaller than they are in order to flatter the customer. Thus, there is nothing to stop a plus-size brand labelling its size 16 an extra-small if it wants to.
The result is sizing that is as clear as mud for those seeking the perfect, standardised fit – especially when shopping online, where we are buying sight unseen and size untried.
There is little doubt that sizing is generally sliding: the coveted size 10 of yesteryear would be likely to be a tad baggy
on the same frame today. It is manufacturer trickery designed to make bigger people feel good about the number on the label.
We are generally larger than ever before: ABS National Health Survey data shows the average waist measurement in Australia is 88cm for women and 98cm for men – sizes medicos warn increase the risk and outcome of just about every horrible, life-limiting disease going. If you look across a range of brands, that makes Ms Average Australian a size 16 or 18 (or in some shops, an extra small). The clothing people are putting sensitivity before honesty, and that is not helping the obesity epidemic.
Our clothing obsession is also having an unsustainable impact. Studies show customers are far more likely to return goods bought online and the pandemic accelerated the trend of ‘framing’, where buyers purchase an item in several sizes and return the ones that don’t fit.
We need to bring back standardised sizing to enable us to make informed decisions and get the true picture of our body sizes. It is not about shaming or cajoling, but about real information and more sustainable consumption.
And true numbers don’t lie.
DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY
Ashley Robinson has fallen for a new outlook on life, and hopes he can navigate past any more bumps in the road to stick with his good mood.
Iwatched a short video the other day with the theme being “the journey is too short to worry about ...”. A distinguished-looking chap was saying that our life is basically a blink of an eye – way too short to waste energy worrying about people who don’t like you, those you don’t like, and things that have gone wrong or you felt were unjust.
Every sentence finished with “the journey is too short”. It made a lot of sense to me and is the underlying reason I have been in a good mood for 60 days. That’s right: people are counting and are quite puzzled as to why I am so happy.
With that in mind, my resolve was thoroughly tested last weekend when I was walking George down the beach with his stick of choice. We came across a guy standing on the water’s edge fully clothed, headphones on, smoking something that must have been pretty good, and just staring at the water – oblivious to all.
George decided to drop his stick at the feet of the guy, who never even blinked. So, I picked it up but took my eyes off the dog, which jumped up to try and get his stick and knocked me over – right at the

feet of the static human. I landed on the hard sand on my right knee and wrist, which actually hurt. But I gathered myself up and limped off, with zero reaction from the bloke. It must have been good stuff, whatever it was.
When I got home, I decided to get my motorbike out. Just as I was pushing it out the gate, the neighbour asked me a question. I thought I had put the bike’s side stand down. But no. The bike landed on top of me on the driveway. On my other leg and other arm. Awesome! Some business for Sunstate Motorcycles, but luckily, the neighbour lifted the 180 kilo thing off me.
Finally, I have been having cold showers in the backyard, as I read somewhere it helped your cognitive health and I can’t afford an ice bath. So there I am, with two sore knees and wrists, standing naked under a cold shower when a lizard ran under my foot and I got such a start that I kicked the veranda post and took all the skin off my big toe.
Day 60 was tested but, hey, the journey is too short. A bit bumpy, but too short to worry about it. Have a good day.

ANOTHER SWEET BITES THE DUST
Sami Muirhead is snacking on the idea of buying up big on Fantales as the much-loved confectionery goes the way of the Polly Waffle.
Sometimes I think I should be running the big companies and give up my day job that largely involves drinking cups of green tea and daydreaming about what savoury biscuit I will be eating for my snacks.
Speaking of snacks, I was surprised, confused and angry to read the news that Allen’s confectionery company is discontinuing Fantales. Forever. The iconic teeth-testing-enemy-of-all-fillings chocolate caramel lolly has been around for nearly a century. That is a long time.
Parent company Nestle shocked many of us when it announced it would cease production of the crowd favourite.
Fantales were first created in 1930 when the Golden Age of Hollywood had people flocking to the movies. To ride the wave, the chewy cubes of heaven were wrapped with ‘fan tales’ of actors and musicians on their wrappers. Who doesn’t love reading out the cryptic clues before plopping that cube in your mouth?
The company cited “declining sales and a need for significant upgrades” at its Melbourne factory as the reasons to delete Fantales. It made me think of all the sweet treats that should be scrapped before Fantales are given a funeral.
Get rid of any of those gross sour lollies my kids love to eat: sour rockets, sour worms, sour straps, sour gummy bears. They are all gross and an assault on our tongues. Say farewell to Skittles. Those chewy little bright buttons make me want to be ill at the thought of them.
And how about any flavoured jellybean except the black ones? Get rid of all of them and just keep black jellybeans, thank you very much. There is a reason the chemist sells only bags of black ones (okay, I know there are red ones, too, but that is not necessary to raise at this stage).
And you know what these bosses who seem disconnected from Aussies and their sweet tooth can bring back to the shelves? The Polly Waffle. The Jelly Tip ice cream. The Sunny Boy pyramid ice block. Yogos. Yes! Wouldn’t we all be dancing in the streets if that happened? You betcha.
And stop introducing novelty flavours such as Iced Vo Vo TimTams. Who wants raspberry-flavoured Twisties? No one.
Just stick to the purist lines and we will be a happier country. So, if you see a bag of Fantales on the shelves, make sure you grab them because you could be sitting on a fortune. But you may lose that fortune found if they pull out all your fillings.

July 1 is the increase in the total super balance and transfer balance cap amounts from $1.7m to $1.9m per member.
Chris
Harris, Ord Minnett Buderim.
SOME SUPERANNUATION CHANGES WORTH NOTING
A new financial year introduces a series of financial considerations, and several changes around the superannuation system that may be of interest.
The federal government hasn’t extended the reduced minimum pension-drawing requirement for those who have pension accounts (retirement accounts): your minimum pension obligation will double this financial year.
By way of example, if your minimum pension factor for 2022-23 was 2.5 per cent of your balance in pension mode (for those over age 65 and are under 75), your minimum pension requirement is now 5 per cent of the balance in pension mode.
As always, we would suggest confirming this with your super fund administrator or your accountant to ensure you draw the required funds from your pension accounts.
Another change that came into force from July 1 is that the superannuation guarantee rate has increased to 11 per cent (up from 10.5 per cent during the 2022-23 financial year). The superannuation guarantee is often referred to as employer contributions – this should be a line item on your payslip from your employer.
The total amount received as salary may not actually change, depending on whether your employment contract includes the super guarantee.
The big-ticket item that changed from
Although these terms are sometimes incorrectly used interchangeably, they are very separate and are important in determining how much may be contributed to super and, once in the superannuation environment, how much of a member’s balance can be converted to a pension.
Keeping it simple, assume you retired on June 30 and have a total super balance of $1.9m. From July 1, you could have used your total balance to commence a pension.
If, for some reason, you chose to retire on June 20 with the same balance, only $1.7m of the $1.9m could be converted to a pension. Timing is important.
It’s worth reiterating that the age a member could consider making member voluntary contributions to super increased from 67 to 74. This was a substantial change back on July 1, 2022, and we’d advise looking at your total super balance and determining if any strategies may be available to you.
Taking a step back, a member voluntary contribution is sometimes referred to as a non-concessional contribution. This is a contribution made to your super fund using after-tax income and is not taxed by the super fund on the way in. These types of contributions are subject to limits and rules.
The above doesn’t take into account your current situation and should be viewed as a high-level overview of various updates.
As always, tread carefully.

UNDERSTANDING DIABETIC EYE DISEASE
As we age, it becomes increasingly important to prioritise our eye health.
If living with diabetes, no matter what your age, the risk of developing diabetic eye disease is a serious concern and may lead to
blindness if left to its own devices. Diabetic retinopathy: This is the most-common form of diabetic eye disease and occurs when elevated blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina.
Cataracts: Seniors with diabetes
are at an increased risk of developing cataracts. This condition causes clouding of the lens in the eye, leading to blurry vision and glare sensitivity.
While cataracts can be treated through surgery, maintaining good
blood sugar control and wearing sunglasses with UV protection are essential preventative measures.
There are ways to reduce your risk.
Control blood sugar levels: Consistently monitor and manage blood glucose levels to reduce the risk of eye complications. If you are on medication, such as insulin or tablets, use these as directed by your doctor.
Regular eye examination: Schedule comprehensive eye examinations annually or as recommended by your healthcare professional.
Blood pressure and cholesterol: It is essential to maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels through lifestyle changes and medication if necessary
Healthy lifestyle habits: Adopt a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption
Educate and inform: Stay up to date about diabetic eye disease, its symptoms and treatment options to seek timely intervention and preventative measures. Living with diabetes, understanding and actively addressing the risks associated with diabetic eye disease are vital for maintaining good vision. By adopting a proactive approach to managing diabetes and prioritising regular eye examinations, you can significantly reduce the risk of diabetic eye complications.
Even if you have no diabetic eye disease, regular screening is important to monitor the early signs and commence treatment.

LOCAL RESIDENT SAVES $20K BY HEALING WITH NATURAL THERAPY
A Buderim woman has saved $20,000 on private health spinal surgery after trying a new holistic therapy on the Sunshine Coast.
Helen Wood endured 18 months of lower back nerve pain, leg numbness and calf cramping – all stemming from a degenerated bulging disc.
“It was causing intense pain. I could hardly move and I could hardly walk,” she says.
After trying many medical and allied health treatments, including chiropractic, physiotherapy and osteopathic care, Helen says she was told she needed back surgery in order to have a pain-free life.
“I didn’t have private health cover so it was going to cost $20,000 just for the basic two-night stay,” she says.
Just a month before her scheduled surgery, a colleague recommended she try Amino Neuro Frequency therapy.
“Being new and alternative, of course I was dubious and sceptical, but I got to a point where I was ready to try anything,” Helen says. “After one or two sessions, the pain was gone.”
Helen’s dramatic turnaround can be attributed to an innovative therapy adopted by clinical nurse consultant Claire Dunkley, who runs Cluzie Clinic in Buderim. Claire, who has been nursing for more than 20 years, is now the highest qualified ANF therapist in Australia.
“We’re all familiar with ECG which measures the electrical frequency of the heart,” she says.
“What many don’t realise is that our whole body is made up of these types of electrical currents. Just like a defibrillator resets the hearts rhythm, ANF ‘resets’ the other frequencies inside the body. The ANF frequencies were discovered by a Swedish doctor, who then took his research to a professional from NASA.
“The material that the discs are made out of are the same material as the space suits. NASA developed it about 35 years ago because the astronauts were coming home sick. Lined with this material, the suits reflect back the human frequencies, so they stay healthy.
“ANF is on the frontier of modern medicine and is an incredibly powerful healing tool, helping people escape pain and find true health and vitality.”

HOW TO IMPROVE SLEEP PATTERNS NATURALLY
If you are feeling sleep deprived, you’re not alone. About 48 per cent of Australian adults aren’t getting the recommended eight hours of sleep a night.
While you are asleep, your body has important work to do. The body repairs and regenerates brain and nerve cells, produces hormones and proteins and removes toxic waste. Not getting enough sleep hours may put you at risk of developing chronic health conditions, a weakened immune system, digestive imbalances, anxiety and stress.
be assisted through natural supportive supplements.
There are several pharmaceutical products that can be prescribed for insomnia or sleep-related issues by your doctor. These are generally classed as sedative hypnotics that include barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and anti-anxiety medications. Although useful, they can affect your ability to drive and work, due to heavy sedative effects.
They can give a hangover feeling in the morning and can become habitual and addictive.
Natural sleep aids can be beneficial because they have minimal unwanted side effects and gently support your body to be calm, and to fall asleep and stay asleep naturally.
Herbal support – Several sedative and nerve-supportive herbs may help you to fall asleep and maintain your sleep. The most common are Lavender, valerian, passionflower, skullcap and zizyphus.
Lavender, passionflower and skullcap are calming herbs for the mind and may be most useful for people who struggle to sleep due to anxiety or racing thoughts.
Valerian and Zizyphus have sedative and hypnotic effects to help you fall and stay asleep. Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of valerian root and zizyphus supplements for improving sleep quality and reducing the time it takes to fall asleep.
Melatonin – Your pineal gland secretes melatonin, stimulated as a reaction to darkness. It signals the brain that it’s time to sleep. There is a homeopathic melatonin that naturally stimulates your own body to help you sleep. It’s different to the synthetic pharmaceutical melatonin that doctors can prescribe.
Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that was developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, in the late 18th century. The principles of homeopathy are: like cures like (Law of Similars) and the more dilute the remedy, the greater its potency (Law of the Infinitesimal Dose).
Amino acids – Our bodies need serotonin to produce melatonin to regulate sleep. Tryptophan, an essential amino acid, creates the neurotransmitter serotonin.
Magnesium sleep supplements may have amino acids or herbs added to the product to assist sleep. Eating magnesium-rich foods such as almonds, dark chocolate, peanut butter, salmon, spinach and walnuts before bed can help. Sleep hygiene – Good lifestyle choices and routine practices are known to support positive sleep outcomes. This is known as sleep hygiene. Practising regular good-sleep lifestyle habits will help your body gain the much-needed eight hours.
5 TIPS FOR BETTER SLEEP
1. Stick to a routine. Commit to going to sleep at the same time and waking up at the same time, even on days off.
2. Avoid stimulants up to six hours before bedtime including coffee, tea and chocolate.
3. Reduce light exposure. Turn off all screens at least an hour before bedtime. Use block-out curtains in your bedroom.
4. Eat your smallest meal before bed. Actively digesting a big meal at sleep time may cause reflux.
Specific struggles such as calming the mind, falling and staying asleep may
A study of geriatric patients who discontinued use of benzodiazepines found aromatherapy application of lavender oil to be as effective as pharmaceuticals to treat insomnia.
Eating foods rich in tryptophan such as turkey, chicken, meat, cheese, yogurt, eggs and fish can help improve your sleep. Magnesium – Magnesium can be used for assisting sleep, as it helps to relax both the nervous system and your muscles.
5. Meditation: Breath work and meditation practices before bed can assist your mind and body to relax. Words and tips by Assunta Hamilton. Kunara Organic Marketplace naturopath 330 Mons Road, Forest Glen. kunara.com.au. Areyouover65andlookingforprofessionalandfriendlymedicalcare?

CARING FOR INNER EARS
The human cochlea, also known as the inner ear, is vital for our ability to hear and perceive sound.
Shaped like a snail shell, this small structure resides deep within our skulls.
The cochlea’s primary role is to convert sound vibrations into electrical signals that our brain can comprehend.
Sound waves enter the ear canal, causing the eardrum to vibrate. These vibrations travel through the middle ear to the cochlea’s fluid-filled canals, stimulating thousands of tiny hair cells.
Hair cells play a crucial role in converting mechanical vibrations into electrical signals. These signals are then sent to the auditory nerve, which carries them to the brain. The brain interprets the signals as sound, enabling us to hear and understand our surroundings.
However, the cochlea is susceptible to various threats. Prolonged exposure to loud noises can damage the hair cells, resulting in hearing loss or tinnitus – a persistent ringing or buzzing sound in the ears. Certain drugs and chemicals can also wreak havoc with the fine structures.
Infections such as otitis media can also harm the cochlea, causing inflammation that affects its function, potentially leading to permanent hearing loss if left untreated.
Certain medical conditions including Ménière’s disease can disrupt the cochlea’s normal functioning, causing dizziness and balance issues, as well as hearing difficulties.
Most commonly, the ageing process takes its toll on the cochlea. About 80 per cent of the population over the age of 80 has a hearing loss. This condition is called presbyacusis.

MEET DR BRONNIE HAUTALA
This month, the team at SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre has had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Bronnie Hautala.
She always brings a smile to work and makes sure we all join in. So we decided to ask her a few questions to find out what puts the spring in her step.
Why did you decide to become a skin cancer doctor, and what do you love about it?
Like many people, I was acutely aware of how much skin cancer there is in Queensland and the amount of people needing care.
I love sharing my understanding of skin cancer with my patients, empowering them to care for their own skin.
I enjoy being available for them for regular skin checks and any time that a worrying spot appears or changes.
Is there a specific area you are passionate about?
Finding skin cancers. My best friend is my dermatoscope. It lets me look into the upper layers of skin to improve diagnosis. I regularly study and attend courses to keep up to date with the latest understanding.
Why did you choose to practice at SunLife?
SunLife offers a wonderful, supportive team so I can focus on providing thorough skin cancer care in fantastic new facilities.
I am also really excited to have access to the very latest skin imaging technology to help in the early detection of melanoma for at-risk patients.
Finally, we had to ask, what do you love about the Sunshine Coast?
The outdoor atmosphere, with lots of safe running and cycling tracks. And yes, I work hard to be sun-safe, too.
Dr Bronnie Hautala is an experienced skin cancer doctor and has undertaken multiple postgraduate courses including advanced certification. She now practises at the new SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre on Wises Road, Buderim/Maroochydore. New patient bookings (and long-term care) are available. sunlifeskincancercare.com.au.

SUNNY COAST ATTRACTS NEW DOCTORS TO OCHRE CALOUNDRA
It’s been a big year for the team at Ochre Medical Centre Caloundra, with four doctors arriving to work alongside long-standing local GPs.
First to join the practice was Dr Jeremy Duddridge, whose Canadian parents came to Australia on holiday when he was seven years old and never went home.
That was a familiar theme for Dr
Cassandra Harris, who relocated from Canberra in January.
“We came for a working holiday last year,” she says, “after all the lockdowns and La Ninas – and Canberra winters are not much fun to start with. The whole family fell in love with the area and we decided to move permanently.”
They were joined in February by returning local Dr Aaron Lewis, who relocated with his wife to start their own family close to parents and siblings.
The most recent arrival, Dr Andrew Hallier, was born in South Africa, grew
up in New Zealand, and worked across NSW and Queensland before finally deciding to settle here.
The new arrivals bring a wide range of skills spanning mental health, dermatology, women’s health, skin cancer, travel medicine and occupational health.
They will benefit from the experience of veterans, including Dr Shane Carlisle, who’s worked full time on skin medicine since 201, and Dr Scott Masters, who regularly travels throughout Australasia to present research and educate other healthcare professionals about spinal and musculoskeletal conditions.
The multidisciplinary Ochre practice of over 20 GPs is also home to Dr Anu Pathmaperuma, who focuses on chronic disease management, Dr Giselle Bell, with interests in Indigenous health and providing affirmative and inclusive care for LGBTIQA+ communities, and Dr Sri Kota, who works across areas including cardiology, antenatal care and paediatrics.
The practice has a diverse and experienced array of medical practitioners across the board – without being in a large city.
“There’s even a great team of psychologists here – a really caring community going above and beyond to
help people with their mental health,” Dr Lewis says.
Dr Duddridge contrasts the set-up with his years spent in Monto in the North Burnett, a “two-doctor town” where emergency cases had to be patched up, then airlifted or driven by a friend, as there was only one ambulance in the area.
Referring patients also was tricky, with few practitioners in town – a far cry from the Ochre Health Hub, where pharmacy, x-ray and ultrasound are all in the same building, as well as allied health providers from podiatry and occupational therapy, a dietician and hearing specialists.
Built in 2020, Ochre’s Bradfield House is a purpose-built, state-of-theart facility that is even equipped with treatment rooms where GPs and nurses undertake procedures including iron infusions, skin excisions and ear suctioning.
“We’re all aware of the quality and depth of our resources,” Dr Kota says.
“I love the Sunshine Coast lifestyle –especially at Ochre. We are a very collegiate team and offer all of our patients a really good ‘safety net’ in case their own doctor is away.”

If you’re a CPAP user and have suddenly noticed that you wake up with a wet nose or unfamiliar gurgling sounds in your CPAP tube, here’s why and what you can do about it.

It happens when the warm, moist air in your CPAP humidifier chamber and tube reacts with the cooler external air in your bedroom. As the air travels through the tube and into your CPAP mask, it carries this excess moisture, resulting in a wet nose or tube noise.
Here is the best way to handle this in winter:
• Turn up your heated tube temperature – this will protect against excess moisture by warming the air in the tube to keep the humidity droplet size optimised. This is what we call ‘dry’ heat. If you have a ResMed machine, 29 degrees is good for winter.
• Turn down your humidification level ‘wet’ heat. On ResMed machines, 2 or 1 may be sufficient.
• Make sure your CPAP machine is lower than your head (I have mine on the floor next to my bed). Water has a hard time running uphill so the lower the better.
For more hints and tips, check out the video and blog sections at cpap.com. au or chat with one of our clinicians for free at CPAP Direct Maroochydore.
More than one way to handle arthritis
Hip and knee replacement surgery is a major focus at Sunshine Coast Orthopaedic Group.
These are effective operations for appropriate patients who have failed conservative management.
One of the most important conservative measures that we typically recommend for patients is physiotherapy.
On the Sunshine Coast, we are spoiled with choice for excellent physiotherapists.
One of the programs that a physio may recommend for management of an osteoarthritic hip or knee is called GLAD.
This is an evidence-based program developed in Denmark and brought to Australia in 2016.
GLAD stands for Good Life with Arthritis in Denmark.
The principles have helped thousands of Australians living with arthritis.
It is important to note that the goal of conservative arthritis management is not simply to avoid surgery. It is to give you the best quality of life possible, while appropriately deferring surgery.
Conservative arthritis management involves a multi-disciplinary approach including simple analgesia, lifestyle modification, diet and exercise, injectable therapies and sometimes a minor procedure called a radiofrequency ablation of the genicular nerves.

HOROSCOPES
ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20)
The planetary patterns highlight freedom, independence and creative projects. If you pace yourself and prioritise, then you’ll get things done without feeling rushed. It’s also a good week to socialise with family, close friends and work colleagues.
LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)
Unpredictable Uranus links up with the sun (your ruler), so boredom is a big no this week. Search out unusual people and activities, especially connected with your career and future direction. You’ll favour excitement over the tried and tested.
SAGITTARIUS
(NOV
23-DEC 21)
The current stars are all about the big two – sex and money – as the sun stimulates your joint finances and intimacy zone. But avoid putting your foot firmly in your mouth (on Monday and Tuesday) via tactless talk or an impulsive remark.
WORD STEP
Complete the list by changing one letter at a time to create a new word at each step. One possible answer shown below.
TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21)
Communication is the key to an agreeable week. The sun and Uranus encourage you to blast away redundant attitudes and release grudges. Mercury and Venus encourage you to work through domestic dramas in a diplomatic way.
VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)
Your discreet Virgo nature is emphasised, as Mercury (your power planet) moves from your peer group zone into your solitude zone. Make it a priority to connect with people who understand your particular peccadillos and strong need for privacy.
CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)
Uranus and the sun activate creative projects and fire up relationships. But the Mercury/ Pluto opposition could complicate a romantic or platonic partnership. So, aim to becompassionate –but also robust and resilient.
1. What is the birthstone for the month of May?
2. Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas (pictured) is married to which Jonas brother?
3. If something is squamous, what is it covered with?
4. What do the letters of the company IBM stand for?
5. Which is closer to Australia: the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn?
6. Is a brouhaha a laugh, a drink or an uproar?
SINCLAIR TOUR & TRAVEL
GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21)
Don’t allow a loved one to manipulate you on Monday or Tuesday. Have the emotional strength to stand your ground and say no. With your ruler Mercury moving into Leo, you’ve got energy to burn but make sure you channel it into productive pursuits.
LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)
This week a relationship with a work colleague could be re-energised, as you find new ways to relate. With Venus and Mercury visiting your peer group zone, diplomacy and improved communication skills will help smooth over a troubled friendship.
AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
This week the sun/Uranus link wakes up a work project or fires up a family dream. The sun and Mercury energise your wellbeing zone. So, it’s a good time to review your health and fitness; plus revise your diet and exercise routine.
7. In Greek mythology, what was the name of Jason’s ship?
8. By what modern name is the Victorian era ‘snap dog’ known?
9. Leopold Bloom is the protagonist of which 20th-century novel?
10. What nationality was the folk hero William Tell?
CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23)
Prepare for a contrary kind of week, Crabs. The current celestial cocktail includes a sun/Uranus connection. So, you’re in the mood for change but you’re also feeling sentimental, as you revisit the past and wallow in an ocean of emotion.
SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)
On Monday and Tuesday, you’ll feel intense, argumentative and/or troubled. For the rest of the week, focus on revamping a close relationship as you get this strained partnership heading in a promising new direction.
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
Are you still blaming yourself for mistakes you made many moons ago? Or are you still holding a grudge towards someone who wronged you many years ago? It’s time to forgive others – and yourself – for transgressions from the past.

PALOMA PALOMA PROJECT OPENS NEW DOORS
An expression of interest campaign to find a new developer offers a rare opportunity to create something very special.
Q
That’s the view of Caloundra Chamber of Commerce CEO Brady Sullivan after expressions of interest were called for the sizeable, prime development block that was earmarked for one of the Sunshine Coast’s most controversial resort projects in recent times.
Great fanfare surrounded the unveiling and official launch on April 4, 2022, of the $250million Paloma Paloma hotel, apartments and retail development project in Caloundra.
Construction was expected to start in August last year on the project that was touted as “unlike anything before on the Sunshine Coast”. It was set to completely transform the top of town and take two-and-a-half years to complete.
Not a sod was turned and, in March this year, Sunshine Coast News reported that all had gone silent from developer CURA Habitas Pty Ltd in communications,
social media and on site.
Now a Colliers expressions of interest campaign, closing on July 20, seeks a new developer for the 5289sqm site that takes in 1-9 Bulcock Street and 45-47 Bombala Terrace.
A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson says the property has a current approval for a Material Change of Use of Premises to Establish a Resort
Complex, issued on December 18, 2020, to the owner (Caloundra Central Pty Ltd), which is still valid.
This approval allows for 125 hotel units, conference facilities, 104 residential units, commercial floorspace, a medical centre and food and drink outlets. A Development Permit to Reconfigure a Lot was also issued at the same time.
“The approval runs with the land and if
WORDS: Shirley Sinclair.
the property is sold, a new owner can proceed with the approved development or they can lodge a separate application for consideration by council,” the spokesperson says.
Mr Sullivan believes the current owners have taken the land to the market and they “would love to see a high-quality residential and hotel development delivered on this potential transformational site”.
“The Caloundra Chamber understands that a consolidated site such as this can be transformational for Caloundra, delivering high-quality tourism, housing and experience offerings such as restaurants for the local community and our visitors,” he says.
He says the worst outcome would occur if the site ends up “underutilised”.
A business case for the Sunshine Coast Regional Art Gallery to be built in Caloundra is also underway.

with MWP’s man in the water
Ok peeps, this is live from Hinako Islands off North Sumatra where we have been scoring epic waves.
Although waves were forecast to be around two foot, they turned out to be five foot-plus, and trust me, the photos won’t do it justice.
Currently it’s 6am and we are having coffee before we pull anchor for our daily search. No other boat is due to join us for four days.
Now, for you guys – not sure. I think conditions will be good to go on a search Me? Time to wax up. Have fun out there!
