RENTERS ON PRECIPICE OF ‘AFFORDABILITY CLIFF’

Research shows people are stuck in the rental market for longer and the ‘Great Australian Dream’ of home ownership remains out of reach.

Rents are still climbing across most pockets of Australia and nudging more tenants towards an affordability tipping point.

Two separate data sets on the rental market showed rents lifting across most capital cities and combined regions.

Property data firm CoreLogic recorded a 2.5 per cent lift in national rents over the June quarter to be 9.7 per cent higher than 12 months ago.

Domain chief of research and economics Nicola Powell says the ‘rental pressure cooker’ has not gone away, with strong population growth colliding with a slowdown in home building.

Dr Powell says more renters are finding themselves stuck in the rental

market longer as buying a home remains out of reach.

“With a number of factors at play, there needs to be a seismic shift in supply to address the challenges being faced,” she says.

Everybody’s Home spokesperson Maiy Azize says renters are struggling and more and more are at risk of reaching an “affordability cliff”.

“Cutting back on meals, medicines and heating are becoming terrifying realities for many tenants as they try to keep up with eye-watering rents,”

Ms Azize says.

She says the housing crisis is also stopping people starting families and making other major life changes.

An innovative approach to hip and knee replacement

But the ultra-competitive rental market is showing early signs of losing steam, with vacancy rates ticking up from record lows.

Dr Powell says several factors could be driving up vacancy rates, including more flat-sharing and larger households, as well as other tenants opting for more affordable locations or property types.

But with rents still stubbornly high, housing affordability groups remain worried about the wellbeing of renters.

Ms Azize says limiting unfair rent hikes and building more affordable and social housing are the only ways to end the crisis.

Her comments echo the Greens’ demands in exchange for their support on the federal government’s housing fund policy.

The $10 billion fund is expected to support the construction of 30,000 new social and affordable housing properties in its first five years.

The minor party has been blocking the policy in the Senate in the hope of drawing out more ambition from the government – namely, limits on rent increases and more funding for public housing.

Housing Minister Julie Collins says holding up the fund is delaying money for more social and affordable housing.

“The Labor government’s Housing Australia Future Fund would make a real difference, but it’s being blocked in the Senate by an unholy alliance between the Liberals and the Greens,” Ms Collins says.

She says there is more to the government’s housing agenda than the fund, including a new $2b social housing accelerator to deliver new social homes and bolstered Commonwealth rent assistance. – AAP.

THE REAL COST OF BUY NOW, PAY LATER INSTALMENTS

Millions of Australians are increasingly placing buy now, pay later (BNPL) payments before their monthly obligations, new research by Finder shows.

A Finder survey of 1090 respondents revealed two-in-five (43 per cent) Australians have used a BNPL account in the past six months. Of those who do have an account, one in three (32 per cent) –equivalent to 2.8 million people – has skipped another bill in order to meet their BNPL repayments. A shocking 14 per cent have missed paying their energy bill to cover what they bought on BNPL.

Finder money expert Sarah Megginson says many are too reliant on paying in instalments.

“The BNPL system has seen millions of people fear the thought of having to pay for things in one single transaction,” she says.

“Many are going into huge debt, thinking they can afford to buy lavish items and pay it off later, and get trapped in the cycle of spending money.”

Ms Megginson says while paying in instalments is quite enticing, late fees and account fees can make it more expensive than a credit card. She says new government regulation will see the BNPL system considered a credit product for the first time – a step in the right direction.

Germany uncovers 2000 tonnes of unexploded bombs every year. During World War II, the Allied Forces dropped over a total of 2.7 million tonnes of bombs on Germany. Due to certain defects in their delay timers, a large number of those bombs never exploded – about 10 per cent or 200,000 tonnes. In the years since, it’s been routine for German citizens to be evacuated from buildings or sectioned off on streets, while bomb experts handle the devices.

unshine Coast sybarites (that’s indulgent people with a fondness for luxury) get set to salivate as The Curated Plate returns to our region from July 28 to August 6.

This Coast-wide, 10-day epicurean feast showcases the finest local produce in stunning bush and beach settings.

The Coast’s biggest food event debuted in 2019, showcasing local produce as curated by local, national and international chefs to foodie audiences. This year, it promises to dish up more than 100 events involving in excess of 300 local producers and suppliers from throughout the region.

Portfolio Councillor Terry Landsberg says the annual food celebration is anticipated to attract more than 10,000 guests over 10 days.

“We want locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the flavours of the region and connect with growers, producers and chefs through memorable experiences,” he says.

“Food tourism offers many creative opportunities for the Sunshine Coast, and we are keen to support businesses in our

A signature event definitely worth sinking your teeth into is the Sunshine Coast Asian Food Festival – presented by Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Maleny, on Saturday, August 5, from 1-6pm.

Picture yourself reclining on picnic blankets and cushions on the slopes of the grassed amphitheatre, listening to the soulful sounds of singer-guitarist Dan McGahan or actively participating in cooking demonstrations by The Tamarind’s own chefs, and perhaps one of the riesling masterclasses hosted by wine expert Travis Watson.

Savour sizzlingly sensational streetstyle Asian dishes curated by a team of talented chefs from Spicers Tamarind Retreat’s The Tamarind restaurant, The Spirit House at Yandina, Noosaville’s Sum Young Guys and Rice Boi at Mooloolaba, all perfectly paired with a crisp, lively riesling.

The Tamarind executive chef Dan Jarrett says the festival is an opportunity for all the chefs to shine a spotlight on the amazing produce they use every day, and

The Spirit House’s head chef Tom Hitchcock – Australia’s Chef of the Year –says delicious street food he enjoyed in Thailand is his inspiration for the festival.

various toppings and fillings,” Tom says.

“So, for this dish, I kept the traditional combination of prawns and green nahm, which is traditionally used as a seafood dipping sauce.”

If you like to eat a little on the wild side, try these two out-of-the-box events: The Crocodile Hunter Lodge by Australia Zoo – Honouring a Legacy will serve a sumptuous four-course lunch while patrons look out over the zoo’s resident kangaroos, emus and koalas; and Creative Tours is hosting The Foraged Plate with Diego Bonetto. QThe Queensland Education Minister has announced a state-wide ban in public schools, set to start next year.

ueensland state school students will be banned from using mobile phones and smartwatches when classes begin next year.

Education Minister Grace Grace says the move builds on previous policy under which almost all state schools had imposed some kind of mobile phone ban.

“This state-wide ban will provide

uniformity, extend bans to break times, and include certain wearable devices like smartwatches,” she says.

Ms Grace says more than 95 per cent of schools have a clear policy banning phone use during class, with the remaining schools restricting usage informally.

Following the implementation of recommendations from the Anti-

Cyberbullying 2018 Taskforce, all state schools have been required to outline how they manage mobile phones.

That includes in the context of cyberbullying and distractions in the classroom.

The Queensland government is appointing former family and child commissioner Cheryl Vardon to review the current policy, with her report due later this month.

But she has already advised one of the core recommendations is to implement state-wide restrictions on access to mobile phones and certain other devices during school hours. Implementation will depend on the school.

For example, a small school in the outback may require students to hand phones in to a nominated staff member, while a school with thousands of students may choose to use lockable pouches.

Ms Grace says she will continue talks with other education ministers on producing consistent guidelines across states and territories.

Students will still be able to bring phones to school, so that they can contact parents or carers immediately before or after school.

Exemptions also will be available in specific circumstances, including for health and wellbeing. – AAP.

SPIRITS WITH A NATIVE TWIST

A Caloundra-based distillery is one of three Queensland First Nations businesses to receive state government backing to expand its foothold in Australia’s $50 million native food market.

The Indigenous Native Food Program helps First Nations-owned and operated businesses develop and commercialise new food products with native food ingredients.

As part of the program, Beachtree Distilling Co. owners Steve Grace, a Kamilaroi man, and Kirra Daley aim to produce gin and vodka with a native twist, using ingredients such as strawberry gum and Kakadu plum.

The distillery will be supported to assess new production methodologies, source and screen raw materials, and develop a new range of products with native food ingredients.

GROWING GOOD HEALTH AND COMMUNITY

It’s a sunny winter’s day and a group of gardeners are digging in the earth, planting vegies and herbs while enjoying laughter and good conversations.

Sounds like a perfect morning for most people.

For Cath Manuel, this is her job.

For more than 25 years, the Sunshine Coast local has lived and breathed the

horticulture industry. She trained in the therapeutic horticulture field in 2014 and has delivered garden-based programs since then as the owner and founder of Soil to Supper.

Relatively unknown in Australia, therapeutic horticulture is a process of using plants and garden-based activities to promote physical health and emotional wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities.

“When I get asked what I do for work and explain therapeutic horticulture, most people say, ‘Is that a real job?’,” she says.

“It’s not very well known, but definitely growing in awareness.

“I love sharing my skills and knowledge of gardening to bring joy and good health to so many people who need support and guidance in the garden.

“Gardening helps to improve physical and mental health for all of us and is especially beneficial for people with mental health conditions, health ailments, disabilities, the elderly and people recovering from an injury or illness.”

As host of The Wellbeing Garden podcast, Ms Manual says the garden has always been a retreat and relaxing space for her. So, she realised if it was helping her emotional and physical health, then it

would potentially help others. Her gardening-based activities encourage participants to grow healthy food to enjoy year-round and have been popular with aged care and the elderly, people living with dementia, community centres and National Disability Iinsurance Scheme participants.

“We have garden-based activities that are suited to the person’s needs and ability, so it’s very person-centred,” Ms Manuel says.

“We’re enabling people to complete activities that help to bring wellness and we grow fresh food, so they have something healthy to eat.

“It’s also very social, so we enjoy time growing together which helps to build connections and reduce social isolation.”

Ms Manuel also runs a therapeutic horticulture training program to inspire and guide more people to become part of the industry.

“I saw a need to have more people trained on the ground, delivering programs within communities, so I developed my own training program to share my knowledge and inspire others to work in this wonderful field,” she says.

“My aim is to make gardening and growing food accessible for everyone.” Visit soiltosupper.com. Find The Wellbeing Garden podcast on Spotify.

About WindanSea

WindanSea Surf Club was founded in 1970. The club has about 145 members of all ages and abilities. Former world champion Joel Parkinson and long-term world surfing professionals Serena Brooke, Wade Goodall and Reef Heazelwood are all current or past club members.

Club president Terry Landsberg says he is thrilled that the 10-year project, which included protracted legal arguments, is now open for the whole community to enjoy.

GROUNDSWELL OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Caloundra’s surfing fraternity, local schools and interest groups are set to benefit from the opening of a newly built shared facility.

After riding a long wave from dream to reality, a muchanticipated clubhouse that will become a hub for the Caloundra surfing community has officially opened.

The WindanSea Boardriders’ clubhouse is almost a decade in the

making. The historic boardriding club hosts the much-loved Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Contest every Easter long weekend.

Located on Buderim Street at Currimundi, the club’s facility will be a shared space where members and the wider community can meet.

“This is a great moment for our club and our members,” Mr Landsberg says.

“As a club, we’ve never had a space where our members and other community groups can meet to enjoy their passion for surfing, as well as other community and environmental pursuits.

“We now have a place where a range of community groups can meet and grow and there will also be opportunities for small operators to run low-impact classes like yoga and Pilates and other community activities.”

Mr Landsberg says the 178sqm clubhouse will benefit the whole area, including the Caloundra Mal Club, Moffateers, Indigenous Surfing, Disabled

Surfing, other local clubs and the two neighbouring schools, which will have access and help to develop strong community bonds.

Building committee chairman Don Smith says the community clubhouse will be a terrific boost for local youth and club members who now have a base where they can pursue their passion for surfing and other community interests.

“Over 50 per cent of the club’s membership is juniors, with women and girls representing a growing 20 per cent of total membership,” Mr Smith says.

“A further 30 per cent are males aged over 18, so we have a strong young membership base.”

The opening also comes in time for the 50th anniversary of the Ma and Pa Bendall surfing competition, to be held in 2024.

“It’s going to be great to have our clubhouse open for people to enjoy while they watch some of the best local, national and even international surfers compete for our 50th event next year,” Mr Landsberg says.

The clubhouse was constructed with funding from a range of sources, including community and federal, state and local government grants, club fundraising, and pledges for building materials and labour from local businesses.

• 11,203 passengers have travelled a total of 59,924 kilometres using the Council Link service.

• Pool hoists are now available at all nine aquatic centres. Pool wheelchairs will be available at all those centres soon.

• All abilities exercise classes are included as part of the Healthy Sunshine Coast program.

NEW HOIST HELPS SAILORS RACE TOWARDS GLORY

A Sunshine Coast team of four sailors competing in the 2023 Hansa 303 Queensland Championship is prepped and ready, thanks to a new and specially designed hoist facility at Parrearra.

The hoist facility has been installed on the pontoon at Double Bay to help the Coast’s disabled racing sailors get on and off their specialist boats. Mark Anderson’s determination to train with the racing sailors was the catalyst for the project.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

A draft action plan for people with disabilities aims to ensure inclusion and access for all residents to live, work, visit and play in the region.

The Sunshine Coast community is known for its generosity and kind-heartedness. Now the community is being invited to go one step further and make a difference to the lives of residents living with a disability.

Sunshine Coast Council has prepared the Draft Inclusion Action Plan for People with Disability 2024-2028 to help create a region where those of all abilities have equitable opportunities to live, work, visit

and play. Community Portfolio Councillor David Law says one-in-six Australians have a disability and up to 90 per cent of disabilities are invisible.

“This highlights the importance of this plan and why we want the Sunshine Coast to be a region where people of all abilities have equitable opportunities by 2028,” Cr Law says.

“This plan has been drafted through extensive, targeted consultation with people with lived experience of disability

and their carers, disability support workers and the Inclusion Action Plan Reference Group.

“The draft action plan has identified four guiding principles and commitments, including promoting and protecting human rights, increasing disability awareness, valuing lived experience and improving access, and sets out five key priority areas for action.”

Feedback can be provided at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au before July 31. Drop-in sessions are at Kawana Library at 2pm on July 14, Nambour Library at 3.30pm on July 17 and Coolum Library at 10am on July 19.

Anderson was among a recent training group – along with Saltwater Veterans sailors Sharon Dalton, Tiarne Burkett, Sonja Macfarlane and Hayden Southwell – using the facility for the first time. Four of them will compete in the September championship on the Gold Coast. The sailors have been chosen from Sailability Sunshine Coast’s participation program on Mooloolah River every Tuesday and Friday.

Southwell will be looking to better his and Damien Hallam’s two-person class bronze medal result from the 2021 Special Olympics Queensland Championship.

“All of them will do reasonably well at the championship,” Sailability Sunshine Coast president Alan Winter says. “Sonja is the defending champion from the last state championship, so with a good sailing partner she should do very well.”

FESTIVAL MILESTONE CELEBRATES THE ARTS

Premiere performances and special events will ensure a much-loved program makes the most of its 21st anniversary.

NOOSA alive! Festival is planning a 10-day party to mark its 21st birthday with a guest list of Australian icons, internationally renowned artists and local legends joining the celebrations.

The annual arts and cultural festival returns from July 21 to 30 with a packed program of special events and premiere performances.

NOOSA alive! Festival president Andrew Stafford says it is only fitting that the annual

event marks its milestone 21st year with a huge celebration.

“NOOSA alive! is one of the most anticipated events on Queensland’s cultural calendar and we are delighted to present our 21st program filled with big events, big names and big performances,” Mr Stafford says.

“I’m particularly proud that Queensland Ballet has chosen NOOSA alive! to debut its brand-new work: Tartan

“We will also host the first Queensland performance of Meg Washington and Paul Grabowsky’s new work, plus the ACO’s (Australian Chamber Orchestra) exclusive performance really adds to what will be a fantastic 21st celebration.”

Queensland Ballet will launch NOOSA alive! with the world premiere of its new work, Tartan & Tchaikovsky Mash, at The J Theatre on July 21 and 22.

The two-act performance features Tartan, a new contemporary piece inspired by Scottish music, and a compilation of short works set to music from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty.

Don’t miss the opportunity to join the artistic director of Queensland Ballet for his final appearance at NOOSA alive! Festival as part of an exclusive in-conversation event. Queensland Ballet recently announced that Li Cunxin and his wife Mary would retire at the end of the year.

In a stunning Queensland premiere, Washington and Grabowsky are partnering for an unforgettable evening of music. The pair began collaborating when Washington was a newly graduated jazz singer. Their intimate show at The J Theatre on Wednesday, July 26, reunites the kindred musical spirits.

The program also will include the internationally renowned Australian Chamber Orchestra, plus Cirque Bon-Bon Encore returns with a new show to dazzle audiences by fusing contortion, aerial artistry, dancing and death-defying acrobatics.

Also announced for the 2023 festival is Tenori under the Stars! – an evening of gourmet food, fine wine and exceptional music on Noosa Main Beach on Sunday, July 23.

Alive in the Woods is another event not to be missed. Headlined by Kate Cebrano, it includes eight hours of live music and entertainment in Noosa Woods. The festival is offering up a feast of fabulous literary events, too, including the newly announced Literary Breakfast with 14-time Walkley award-winning journalist Nick McKenzie. NOOSA alive! is proudly presented by 2023 principal partners Wilson Foundation and Trevor and Judith St Baker Family Foundation.

Wave of exciting projects rolls in Projects connecting Ocean Street and Duporth Avenue with our new Maroochydore City Centre, advancing Mooloolaba’s foreshore transformation, and upgrading a range of parks and pathways are all featured in Sunshine Coast Council’s 2023-24 Budget.

Enjoying the investment will be residents, businesses and visitors to Division 4, which incorporates Alexandra Headland, Buddina, Maroochydore, Minyama, Mooloolaba, Parrearra and Warana.

This budget includes a $6 million investment to kick off construction of a vital link with an attractive new streetscape that will transform First Avenue, Maroochydore.

The major streetscape upgrade will provide an attractive and safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists, and improved and increased spaces for local businesses. It will help calm local traffic and deliver new trees, plants and street furniture.

I’m also pleased to see that funds will

be invested at La Balsa Park, Alan Walker Park and Point Cartwright Reserve, Buddina, as well as at Jessica Park and Outrigger Park, Minyama.

The community will greatly benefit from upgrades to exercise equipment, new furniture and amenities, a barbecue area, boat ramp and fish-cleaning table.

The Mooloolaba Central Meeting Place – a place where our community can gather, celebrate and connect with nature and each other – also will receive an investment of $7 million in 2023-24.

The final section of the Brisbane Road upgrade in Mooloolaba will be progressed.

It’s also encouraging to see construction continuing on the Coastal Pathway’s final section between beach accesses 229 and 233. Once completed, the pathway will connect Currimundi and Buddina.

Additional improvements will be made in Division 4, such as stormwater upgrades in Warana, Maroochydore and Mooloolaba, an extension of the Grand Parade dog off-leash area at Parrearra and a new beach shower at Beach Access 154, Alexandra Headland.

For further information on Sunshine Coast Council’s 2023–24 Budget, including a full list of Division 4 projects, visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/budget.

YOUR GIFT AT WORK

The Wishlist team was recently visited by a long-term patient of the rehab unit at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, keen to talk about the importance of funding power wheelchairs for the unit.

A year ago, he was perfectly fine and looking forward to retiring and travelling with his wife.

Then suddenly, his world turned upside down and he found himself in the Intensive Care Unit for eight months, unable to move or speak and living an actual nightmare.

He wanted a little control back in his life with the ability to move from his bed to a spot in the sunshine without having to ask a nurse to help him. We’ve since been working to deliver at least one of the three $17,000 wheelchairs needed by the unit. Thanks to our long-term partner Sunshine Toyota, we’ve placed an order for one this week. We can’t wait to see his

face when we wheel it in.

Mix FM’s Give Me 5 maintained the usual festival of giving through June, and appeal ambassadors – the Conci family members – could not have been more supportive of the cause.

At fundraising events, I heard of the many Give Me 5 campaign-funded resources Jason and Rebecca Conci’s daughters have relied on during their frequent visits to hospital.

The family hailed this year’s focus – customised and targeted care for adolescents and young adults in our hospitals – as vital to the future of healthcare, especially as their daughter Jen faces a kidney transplant.

Then last week, Wishlist Centre hosted the birth of our first “Wishlist baby”. Baby Eva couldn’t wait for the ambulance to take her mum Cynthia across the road to the hospital. So, she found herself giving birth in her room at the centre, delighting the many volunteers there.

It was a stark reminder that giving saves lives, as well as money and stress, and led us to question where Cynthia may have otherwise delivered Eva if not for our centre, that has been provided by a generous community.

Thanks for your support of Mix FM’s Give Me 5 and Wishlist.

How you can be part of a truly historic Olympic event in our region

Olympic and Paralympic symbols and athletes will be in our own backyard, to mark a special milestone.

Life-sized Olympic rings and the Paralympic agitos will make their debut on the Sunshine Coast next weekend, as our region celebrates “9 Years To Go” until the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 9 Years To Go celebration marks the first time since Sydney 2000 that the symbols will be on prominent display in Australia.

The Olympic rings express the activity of the Olympic movement and represent the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world.

The Paralympic agitos, from the Latin term ‘I move’, reflect ‘spirit in motion’ and represent the strong will of every

Paralympian. Sunshine Coast residents will have the rarest of opportunities to ‘meet’ and capture photos alongside the rings and agitos, together with Olympic and Paralympic athletes, on Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23, at several locations.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the arrival of the symbols marks another special milestone for our region in the lead-up to Brisbane 2032.

“In nine years, when the world tunes in to watch the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Sunshine Coast’s picturesque Alexandra Headland will be front and centre as the planned location for a number of events, including the start and finishing line of the Olympic and Paralympic Marathon,” Mayor Jamieson

says. “So, it’s only fitting that this is the first stop for the Olympic rings and Paralympic agitos when they come to our region on 22 and 23 July.

“This is a truly historic opportunity for Sunshine Coast families.”

‘World-fi rst’ way to protect environment

What makes our region’s ecosystems precious?

The ‘big-picture’ answer has been revealed with the launch of a world-first mapping product for all to explore and understand the different services provided by our ecosystems.

Ecosystem services are the benefits each type of ecosystem provides, including climate regulation, pollination, food supply, habitat and more.

Sunshine Coast Council and the University of the Sunshine Coast have joined forces to release the ‘world-first’ Ecosystem Function Mapping and Reporting Tool as part of the joint Valuing the Sunshine Coast’s Natural Assets

research project. Project lead Dr Graham Ashford says the tool depicts different ecosystem services for every location across the region and can highlight “hot spots” providing multiple services.

“The Ecosystem Function Mapping and Reporting Tool is the first and only such platform in operation anywhere in the world, to our knowledge,” Dr Ashford says.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox says the tool is already improving the way the Council makes decisions.

He says it will also be useful to the wider community.

“Up until this point, we’ve been able to consider this information in a piecemeal way, rather than as a holistic system approach that provides a bird’s-eye view of our region,” Cr Cox says.

“These are incredibly complex considerations that this research has been able to simplify, to the point where they can be incorporated into decision making.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AS GOOD NEWS STORY GROWS

An initiative that helps children to improve their reading skills while surrounded by lovable dogs is looking for new volunteers.

Story Dogs is a program designed to make reading fun for primary school children to ensure that no child is left behind in literacy.

Maree Keating and her Golden Retriever Jasmine (pictured) joined the program in 2021 after reading a story in My Weekly Preview

The Caloundra Story Dogs coordinator says the accepting, loving nature of dogs gives the program its ‘magic’ and helps children relax, open up, try harder and have fun while reading.

“The children look forward to their Story Dog sessions each week,” Ms Keating says.

“The individual attention and encouragement that students receive from the Story Dogs and their owners has the most reluctant readers fully engaged.

“We have schools lining up to join the program, but we need more volunteers to fill the gaps.

“I recently met a woman who told me that her son had read to a Story Dog and

that he no longer hated reading and, as a result, was doing much better in school.”

Volunteers will receive training and must be able to give two hours per week for the school year, while dogs will be required to pass an accreditation test.

BRAVE AND BOLD WALK AMONG US

Jane Stephens is loving the passion and extraordinary deeds of ordinary people who dare to dream and raise the bar for all of us to emulate.

Ordinary people doing daring things abound. It can be tricky to spot them as they are often humble and shy. But seeing and understanding them helps advance us all, so large and fully do they live.

Two such creatures crossed my path recently, and while their focuses were poles apart, their bravery was similar.

At the Project Pink fundraiser dinner at Mooloolaba, I sat next to a man who had ditched a well-paid accounting job that was making him unhappy. He joined others in a start-up that felt purposeful, bigger and somehow right.

Logic would dictate he should just sit tight and accommodate the misery: his partner was pregnant and they had recently bought a house. But with her support, he invested his professional acumen in developing Lendy: a smallbusiness idea that links sharers with borrowers – everything from mowers to tents, tools to furniture. The idea is not to make bucketloads of money but to grow a sustainable consumer model that reuses, and builds connection and community.

The Sunshine Coast is a fertile field for turning dreams into targets. So many

organised events have a philanthropic and financial component: walking to raise money for heart research, riding for cancer, reading to bolster school funds. But then there is the next level: doing it alone, without a script.

A cycling friend, paramedic Emma Williams, is in the Red Centre, pushing her pedals from Alice Springs to Alex. She came upon the audacious idea, raising money for the QAS Legacy Scheme, at Ocean Addicts coffee shop one day after a fun group ride. She has plotted it meticulously, researched nutrition and ridden endless kilometres in preparation.

The goals of extraordinary, ordinary people might be diverse, but a few distinct characteristics unite them. They make time to pursue their passion. They embrace failures without having a pity party. They seek new knowledge about the object of their goal. They spend their free time with those who nourish and support them. Most of all, these extraordinary, ordinary folk are what US psychologist Brene Brown calls ‘wholehearted’: they commit, despite risk and uncertainty, because they believe it is worth it.

Right there is passion writ large.

ENOUGH

TO DRIVE ME TO DRINK

Ashley Robinson is contemplating a new gig in retirement that will give me a little more time to himself and a different kind of commentary.

Slowly moving into retirement has its benefits and challenges. I am not quite sure which one outweighs the other. Sure, more time with the grandkids is a plus, but more time with Old Mate could be a minus. I haven’t figured that part out yet.

My worlds could be about to collide shortly with the possibility that I will be required to be home 24/7, helping with all things to do with bird tending.

Now, this job would be difficult if Old Mate was away. But in this case, it’s far worse as she also will be there 24/7, supervising me. That means the ‘worlds collide’ metaphor is more like a massive meteor heading straight for me and there is nothing I can do about dodging it.

I can only imagine what the commentary will be like: “No, you don’t fold those covers like that. Grab them by the corners. They won’t pack away if you don’t fold them like I tell you to. How thick are you?” And that will be the start of the day. It will all be downhill from there. The day will be taken up by not putting lids on properly, not unpacking Tupperware containers correctly, not finding them or

putting them in the right place (which is wherever she decides that place is).

Then there’s hanging washing on the line in the correct manner, washing up the right way ... and the list goes on – a bit like the commentary. I can already feel the heat from that looming meteor that has Tugboat’s name all over it.

With this in mind, I probably need to find a hobby or, better still, a paying gig that will keep me out of her hair once we get through this little speed bump in life.

Since Old Mate became a teetotaller, she frowns upon my beer consumption. So I reckon I have the perfect solution: a podcast about beer. I was always going to do one and call it ‘The Beer Man’, talk about the million micro brewers on the Coast and beyond (and let me tell you, ‘beyond’ is good!). But that name is taken, so ‘Tugboat’s Ales’ might work. It will get me out of the house, and nearly give me a valid reason to have a beer.

I am a genius. What a cunning plan. I just have to hope someone will like it. And that’s, of course, if I get through the pending meteor thing, or I might have to change it to ‘Tugboat’s Ails’.

A SAUCE OF FRUSTRATION

Sami Muirhead has poured herself into a debate that could never run hot and cold: where to store a much-loved condiment.

Just when you thought our world could not get any crazier, debate has erupted again over where to store the tomato sauce.

I do not think the debate itself is crazy. I think the verdict is totally bonkers. It is the conversation that simply will not go away. I think the hierarchy at Heinz has lost the plot. The company has revealed the correct way to store tomato sauce is in the fridge. The official Heinz United Kingdom Twitter account shared: “FYI: Ketchup goes in the fridge!”

The first insult, and massive fault, in this ridiculous statement is calling condiment ‘ketchup’. But my blood pressure cannot take that debate, so let’s focus on the storage war.

We keep our tomato sauce in the pantry because who wants to put cold sauce on hot meat pies? Because who wants hot chips with cold sauce? Because we are civilised humans and not animals.

Because it is where it belongs. My grandmother lived to 90 and she always kept tomato sauce in the cupboard. A bit of mold never bothered my granny because she was a great human being.

My mother raised three kids all by herself and can kill six cane toads in one

night before teatime. And she stores sauce in the pantry because she is a wise woman. Who are these morons who keep sauce in their fridge because they are being held to ransom by cockroaches and other bugs? Toughen up, people! Use the force of the room temperature storage and forget the fridge.

One former friend (we broke up over this issue) claims if you leave the sauce in the pantry, it loses its nutritional value over time. Well, babes, I hate to break this to you, but I think there is zero nutritional value in tommy sauce. But there is plenty of mental health value in covering your food in it. The only time I can make an exception to this rule and leave the sauce in the fridge is if the appliance is unplugged. The end.

A PHENOMENON THAT DEFIES REALITY

The Northern Lights’ dancing fluorescent-green glow is unforgettable.

Experiencing the Northern Lights was a dream come true for me, and the journey to witness this natural wonder was filled with

unforgettable moments. One of the highlights of the trip was cruising along the Sognefjord: the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. The pristine scenery that

surrounded us was simply breathtaking.

As we sailed through the fjord, I was mesmerised by the reflections on the calm water and the magnificent waterfalls cascading down the mountains. The stillness of the area created a sense of tranquillity that will forever be etched in my memory.

Another exhilarating experience was dog sledding with the husky dogs. The thrill of being pulled through the snowcovered trails by these energetic and beautiful animals was unmatched.

We had the opportunity to take turns being the passenger and the driver of the sled, navigating the winding paths at speed. It was an adrenaline-pumping adventure, and getting to know some of the huskies by name added a personal touch to the experience. After the exhilaration, we were treated to hot soup by the cozy fire, accompanied by the adorable company of some new puppies.

However, the ultimate highlight of the trip was witnessing the Northern Lights not just once, but twice, during our Hurtigruten cruise. The anticipation built up as we eagerly awaited the captain’s announcement.

Finally, around 1am, the announcement came, and we quickly bundled up in warm clothing and rushed to the deck. The moment we stepped

outside, we were greeted by a sky filled with dancing lights in shades of fluorescent green. It was a sight that seemed to defy reality – as if nature itself was putting on a magical show just for us.

Despite the freezing temperatures, I couldn’t bear to miss a single moment, and I held my camera with bare hands, capturing the ethereal beauty of the lights.

The memories of the incredible pristine scenery along the Sognefjord, the thrilling dog-sledding adventure and the awe-inspiring display of the Northern Lights will forever remain etched in my heart.

It was a journey of a lifetime, filled with moments that reminded me of the sheer beauty and wonder of our natural world.

WHERE NEXT? SURVEY REVEALS TOP DESTINATIONS FOR TRAVEL YEAR AHEAD

As holidaymakers and travellers hit the road for a winter escape, Queensland comes in as the top domestic destination and New Zealand as the global favourite.

A survey of an independent panel of 1001 Australian travellers, commissioned by travel insurance provider InsureandGo, has revealed that after a three-year hiatus, the population is on the move again.

A total of 61 per cent of people are travelling inside Australia, and 37 per cent have gone or are planning to travel overseas.

One in three chose Queensland as their preferred state destination, which is not surprising after the state saw a record $24.5 billion in domestic visitor spend in the year to September 2022.

The InsureandGo survey found that only 16 per cent of respondents indicated New South Wales appealed to them the most, followed closely by Western Australia (13 per cent), Victoria (12 per cent), Tasmania (11 per cent), South Australia (seven per cent), the Northern Territory (five per cent) and the Australian Capital Territory at just one per cent.

Respondents were also asked to choose their top-three global holiday

destinations for the year. Australia was included in the list to measure its popularity against global locations. Destinations closer to home came out on top as flight prices remain high. In 2022, travel search engine KAYAK reported that average return economy international flight prices had soared by 33 per cent from 2019.

The InsureandGo survey found that this year, trips to Asia and North America may eclipse the traditional European trip. The Asia-Pacific appealed to 44 per cent of respondents, while 35 per cent chose North America as their international destination, compared with 31 per cent who chose Western Europe. More than half of the respondents revealed that Australia appealed to them more than all of the listed international destinations for a holiday this year.

Tips for using pink

True Barbiecore style should be fun and wake your inner child. Playful and quirky, the look should be various shades of pink, as well as creative elements such as bold paintings and prints. Vases, cutlery, rugs are all great ways to have some fun. For a more muted style, use accents of soft pink tones against a white, cream or grey palette.

WINTER GARDENING IDEAS

Southeast Queensland is blessed with the best when it comes to the cooler months. Take advantage of the winter sunshine and get outdoors to keep your garden in shape.

tip 1

While mulch is vital in summer to keep the weeds at bay and save water, it’s just as important in winter when it keeps the roots of your plants warm. It also makes your garden look tidier. Mulch should be about 20 to 30 centimetres deep. Various mulches have different applications. For example, sugar cane mulch is great for the vegetable patch, while pine bark is good for pots and garden beds.

tip 2

If you have a timber deck, it’s time to give it some much-needed love. First of all, remove all the furniture and give the timber a brush with a stiff broom to remove dirt and leaves that have accumulated between the boards. Grab a deck-cleaning product to thoroughly clean the timber. Follow the instructions for the best result. The next step is to re-stain –just one coat should lift and rejuvenate the timber, all ready for the warmer months ahead.

tip 3

The sun may have set on our summer swims, but the backyard pool will still need some TLC over winter:

• Keep regularly checking the water’s pH levels – neglect this and the algae will take over.

• Keep equipment running to ensure it all stays in good working order and the pool remains clean.

• Don’t forget to check the pool filters to ensure they are free of debris.

• Regularly get the creepy crawly into the pool to reduce the build-up of scum on the walls and floor.

tip 4

Fertilising during the year using seasonspecific products will give your plants an opportunity to receive all the elements they require to grow to their best. Through winter, it is important to work on maintaining soil quality so a combination of synthetic and organic fertilisers are an important part of the overall program.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20)

This week there are difficult Mars/ Saturn and sun/Pluto oppositions, so your bossy Aries side could take over. If you sweat the small stuff, then you’ll end up feeling tired and emotional by the end of the week. It’s time to de-stress and relax. You might just enjoy it.

LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)

Thursday’s sun/Neptune trine boosts your creativity. But Saturday’s tempestuous sun/Pluto opposition highlights your inclination to jealous or overbearing behaviour. So do your best to loosen your intense grip on a loved one, otherwise you’ll just drive them away.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)

You’re keen to expand your knowledge base, as you pick up ideas and inspiration from all corners of the world. Sagittarians are the cosmopolitan global citizens of the zodiac, so get connecting with your international buddies ASAP.

WORD STEP

Complete

TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21)

With Venus slowing down (before it turns retrograde on the weekend) the intensity levels ratchet up, and issues involving relatives, friends or education could be complicated. Jealous thoughts and possessive behaviour are also a danger.

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)

Some Virgos will reminisce about an old love or experience disappointment, as you discover you’ve over-committed energy to a project that’s going nowhere. It’s time to reformulate your goals, as the new moon activates your hopes-and-wishes zone.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)

This week an obstacle could be placed in your path. Or you could be drawn into a power struggle with a relative, friend or work colleague. Don’t stress and obsess. Sometimes hurdles help you slow down and see the path ahead more clearly.

1. Who played Jim in the 2000s sitcom According to Jim?

2. What is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere?

3. Oslo is the capital of which country?

4. Reggie Watts (pictured) starred in which US late night talk show?

5. The Velvet Revolution took place in which year?

6. Who did Ringo Starr replace as drummer in The Beatles?

GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21)

It will be difficult to balance head and heart this week. Loved ones will attempt to throw you off balance, scramble your sense of certainty or press your emotional buttons. But it’s up to you to deflect their efforts with plenty of Gemini grace and good humour.

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

This week looks rather stressful, as Venus (your power planet) slows down before it turns retrograde on the weekend. Do your best to be patient. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great, Nelson Mandela: ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

Monday night’s new moon activates your work and daily routine zones so it’s a good week to start a job or embark on a rebooted exercise program. With Venus in your relationship zone, it’s time to harmonise with the main people in your life.

7. True or false: peccaries are pigs?

8. How many stars appear on the flag of North Korea?

9. When was the last year in which the Winter and Summer Olympics were held in the same year?

10. Death Valley National Park is located in which two US states?

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23)

Crabs are ruled by the changeable moon. So, you can’t help but be affected by this week’s new moon in Cancer, as it stirs up your emotions. But becoming overemotional and unreasonable won’t help matters. Instead, celebrate your strengths.

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

The stars boost your personal magnetism – and your manipulative side. Pluto gives you an energy surge that increases your desire to be in charge. But, if you want to avoid unnecessary power struggles and unpleasant dramas, stop trying to control others.

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)

If you’re involved with a group, class, club or organisation, then expect power plays and personality clashes. A partnership could also be placed under temporary strain. When it comes to your social circle, aim to be much more discriminating.

NOW YOU HAVE FUNDING, HOW ARE YOU ARE GOING TO GET TO THE APPOINTMENTS?

How to get to programs, appointments and recreational activities is often the last consideration when doing the planning for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding.

Transport is easy with the support of tailored NDISregistered service Carers that Drive. The name says it all.

When Bina and Stephan received NDIS funding approval for their son George, they needed to get him to and from all his planned activities.

George is an intelligent young man with a love of music, friends, work and his family. He also has Type 1 Diabetes, anxiety and autism. With these interests now funded, George needed to be taken to and from work

three days a week, to choir singing and indoor cricket activities.

Bina and Stephan have a catering business and two younger children. Juggling their family lives became a challenge until they discovered this service. One of the workdays, George shares the ride with another person who lives nearby going to the same workspace.

The tailored service helps people to be more independent in the community in their car or a Carers that Drive vehicle. One-off occasions or regular bookings, with or without NDIS, Carers that Drive can help clients get there.

HELPING PEOPLE BECOME INDEPENDENT

Ethan was diagnosed with autism (level 2) at age six. It was his first day of Prep when mum Nicole was given the devastating news by a teacher who knew that Ethan’s development was drastically delayed.

Ethan was moved to a special needs school for specialised teaching and support.

Although beneficial, this new environment did not adequately address Ethan’s need for developing independence and confidence in life skills as he approached adolescence. Recognising this gap, Annalisa Cannizzaro, co-founder of M&A Support Services, proposed to Nicole that Ethan might qualify for NDIS

funding during this period. With mum as a full-time accountant and dad working abroad, it was paramount that Ethan could live an independent life.

Annalisa navigated the NDIS system and sourced the funding for Ethan. Now 17, Ethan has a support worker, can catch a bus to and from work, shops for groceries and cooks his meals with confidence.

“Ethan used to be 100 per cent reliant on us for his everyday needs. But now Ethan is a real contributor to the family, including choosing recipes, doing the shopping and cooking our meals. He really loves to cook,” Nicole said.

“Even in my profession as an accountant, I struggled to navigate the system. Without Annalisa by my side, helping me every step of the way to gain the funding and connect us to the services that Ethan needed, including a support worker to teach Ethan about cooking, managing a budget, showing Ethan how to catch public transport, I would not have known what to do and Ethan wouldn’t be reaching his goals.”

M&A Support Services, an award-winning business, supports individuals in the most-proficient manner, ensuring that they are linked to like-minded services who have the individuals’ best interest at heart.

“We will not recommend or refer any services that we don’t know or trust. It’s paramount when we are connecting our participants that we are certain it’s a good fit for the short or long term,” Annalisa said.

“Having our newly appointed support coordinator Debbie Battaglini, with well-established Sunshine Coast networks, ensures we only offer secure and professional service-provider connections.”

EMPOWERING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES THROUGH SOCIAL ENTERPRISES

Inclusive employment is a crucial aspect of fostering a society that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all.

Unfortunately, individuals with disabilities often face significant barriers when seeking meaningful employment. To address this issue, social enterprises can serve as a transformative pathway, offering a supportive environment where people with disabilities can learn essential skills and gain the confidence needed to excel in the workforce and their communities.

Social enterprises such as those run by local charity, the Compass Institute, play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between individuals with disabilities and the traditional job market. Environments such as its Connections and Garden Cafés, Wabi Sabi retail store and Harvest Kitchen at Compass Farm all provide unique platforms where people with disabilities can explore their

talents, acquire new skills and develop their potential. By operating with a mission to create positive social change, these social enterprises foster an inclusive work environment that celebrates diversity and values the strengths of each individual.

One of the primary advantages of starting a pathway through a social enterprise, such as a café or retail store, is the opportunity to learn key skills that set the foundation for successful employment. Or, if that isn’t the ultimate goal for the individual, it’s a real-world opportunity for skills-based training and development.

Compass programs offer structured training tailored to the specific needs of individuals with disabilities.

From communication and teamwork to problemsolving and time management, participants gain invaluable skills that empower them to transition into the next phase of their journey.

Take Tohbias, for example, who started at Compass in 2017. She has gone on to gain experience in multiple Compass social enterprises, including Harvest Kitchen at Compass Farm, Garden Café in Tanawha and the Compass’ Connections cafes in Nambour and Maroochydore. These experiences gave her the confidence to step into a traineeship at Cricks Sunshine Coast and she now has her eye on the goal of one day gaining experience in an IGA supermarket.

For many individuals with disabilities, gaining confidence and self-belief can be the key to unlocking the next steps towards achieving their goals. Compass social enterprises help to address this by promoting an environment of encouragement and empowerment through mentorship, peer support and guidance.

PLANS FOR GIANT PARCEL OF LAND TO BE DEVELOPED

A 1231 piece of land adjacent to Aura has been earmarked by a local developer to accommodate future population growth.

Aleading residential developer has started the process to get environmental approval to build on a giant parcel of land on the southern Sunshine Coast.

Stockland will seek consent for the site, dubbed Aura South, which is directly adjacent to its award-winning masterplanned community Aura.

It’s positioned within the Halls Creek Potential Future Growth Area.

The area has been recognised by the State Government as an option to accommodate future population growth and meet the region’s demand for long-term housing needs.

The site is a cleared former pine plantation landholding spanning 1231 hectares (3041 acres).

It would have direct access to the soon-to-be-opened Bells Creek Arterial Road and the Bruce Highway.

The site is situated between 1.6km to 6km east of the Bruce Highway and would not be visible to any highway traffic.

Submitting Aura South for independent environmental assessment by the Commonwealth is the first step in assessing the site’s environmental impacts

and suitability for future development.

There will also be opportunities for community involvement.

The Commonwealth’s Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act provides the legal framework to assess the proposed impact the application may have on matters of national environmental significance.

Stockland senior environment and community development manager Mark Stephens says large parts of Aura South

were cleared for forestry activities about 50 years ago and are now primarily used for grazing purposes.

Extensive environmental investigations have been undertaken on the site for more than 15 years, which has informed the application Stockland has submitted to the Federal Government.

“We have submitted a balanced and sustainable proposal which will ensure environmental protections are secured in advance of any future detailed planning,”

Mr Stephens says.

“The EPBC is a rigorous and scientificbased assessment that includes several opportunities for the community to have their say.”

Mr Stephens says the land is highly suitable to be considered for development, given it is elevated, largely flood free and can leverage the significant investment undertaken by the government for roads and schools, as well as taking advantage of the existing amenities in the neighbouring suburb of Aura.

The site is located about 1.5km north of the ShapingSEQ Regional Inter-Urban Break – a 16km green buffer separating the urban areas of Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast.

“We recognise the Inter-Urban Break, which is identified in the 2017 SEQ Regional Plan, and the Aura South proposal does not impact upon this in any way,” Mr Stephens says.

If approved for future development, more 400 hectares of the land is planned to be rehabilitated, which will restore environmental values lost during the forestry era.

Our last morning session was 3-5ft perfect glassy sets that did not stop. And to make it even better, it was just our boat team enjoying it. Yet not one kilometre away, 30 surfers were fighting over a slightly bigger wave while they ignored us. Oh and previous days was a pumping barrel wave where Sunshine Coast people on three different boats arrived. Imagine my surprise when I started recognising people I had not seen in 10 years from the coast in remote Sumatra. Amazing!
