Top tips for picking your super fund:

• Keep your fees low. Annual fees will eat into your returns, so try to pick a fund where you’re paying about one per cent of your super balance in fees. And if you have more than one super fund, take the time to consolidate them – you’ll save plenty in fees.

SUPERANNUATION IS STILL A PRECIOUS COMMODITY

A survey has found that most Aussies would welcome early access to retirement funds. But that may not be a good idea in the long run.

More than half of all Aussies in a recent survey said they would access their superannuation early if they had the option.

A Finder survey of 1090 respondents revealed 56 per cent – equivalent to more than 11.3 million people – would take out and use money from their super if they could.

Rising costs was the most common motivation for making a withdrawal, with one in six (17 per cent) – 3.4 million people – saying it would help alleviate cost of living pressures. This was followed by Aussies who said they would use their super to buy a home for themselves (15 per cent), those who would put it towards an investment property (eight per cent) and those who said they would help buy a home for their

kids (four per cent). A further eight per cent of Aussies would use the funds to go on a holiday.

Finder superannuation expert Alison Banney says early access to super isn’t something that should be taken lightly.

“With the rising cost of living and the housing affordability crisis, the prospect of early access to super is a tempting one that is increasingly up for debate,” she says.

“Currently, there are a limited number of circumstances where you can access your super early – such as financial hardship, compassion grounds and the First Home Super Save Scheme – but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

“By taking money out of your super now, you could be robbing Peter to pay Paul as you risk wiping tens-of-thousands of

• Think about your investment goals. The type of fund you choose should depend on your age. If you’re young and new to the workforce, a growth fund is probably your best bet as this will maximise your returns over the next few decades. As you get closer to retirement, however, a balanced or conservative fund will make sure you’re not taking on too much risk.

• Focus on performance. Look for funds with high performance levels over the past five years. Even just a one or two per cent difference in annual returns can make an enormous difference to your super balance in the long haul.

dollars off your retirement fund.”

Many Aussies have their heads in the sand, with 59 per cent admitting they don’t know how much money they have in their super account.

Of those who do know, the average amount is $163,064. Men ($205,166) report having almost double the amount of super than women ($116,812).

Data from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia in 2022 estimated that withdrawing $10,000 from your super at the age of 30 could cost you more than double that in retirement – a possible loss of $21,516.

Ms Banney reminds Australians that making an early withdrawal from your super should be treated as a last resort.

HACKERS WILL NEVER RELAX

The majority of Aussies use technology to unwind, forgetting about cybersecurity risks

In fact, the latest survey performed by Cint and commissioned by cybersecurity company NordVPN showed that 97 per cent of Australians turn to technology for relaxation during the day.

While watching Netflix or scrolling Instagram can help alleviate stress, it may also eliminate users’ privacy awareness.

Sixty-four per cent of Australian respondents said they turned to their gadgets a few times a day to relax, and 22 per cent reported they do so at least once a day. TVs and smartphones are the two top gadgets that Aussies use to relax.

“In the past, very few cybersecurity issues were associated with the use of television,” says Adrianus Warmenhoven, a cybersecurity expert at NordVPN.

“However, now many people use smart TVs. In 2019, the FBI released a warning stating that smart TVs can make users vulnerable to surveillance and attacks by bad actors (hackers). Since then, user security technology has become more advanced, but internet-connected devices remain vulnerable. Smartphones are especially at risk because today, no other gadget knows more about its user. That makes smartphones a very appealing target for hackers.”

Do you remember?

In the original 1902 stage version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy did not have a dog, but a faithful cow named Imogene. While L. Frank Baum’s book features the Toto dog we know and love, his adaptation opted for the larger animal. “It may seem a long jump from a dog to a cow, but in the latter animal we have a character that really ought to amuse the youngsters,” he said in 1904.

Perhaps one of the least-popular formats of optical-based digital storage was the MiniDisc. So, they struggled to gain popularity. MiniDisc sales began to dwindle when MP3 players started to gain popularity and were finally killed off as a format in 2011 when Sony (the main manufacturer) ceased production. 49

PUTTING THE LOCAL ARTS SCENE CENTRE STAGE

Creatives and audiences alike are applauding greater funding for and emphasis on artistic endeavours in all their forms. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

Over the years, we have seen the growth and evolution of the arts scene on the Sunshine Coast. Today, the region has more creatives than ever before, with many people working full time in the arts, turning their passion and skill into profitable careers.

Latest research shows the region’s creative arts sector, which comprises everyone from painters to podcasters, is evolving and diversifying with great momentum.

Results reveal that nine-in-10 locals agree that arts and culture make the Sunshine Coast a better place to live, while 96 per cent have attended an arts event, and one in two participated.

The success story was heard at the latest meeting of Sunshine Coast Council.

Councillors unanimously voted to adopt the Sunshine Coast Creative Arts Plan 2023-2038, the second iteration of its 20-year plan, to shape and support the sector over the next 15 years.

Councillors were told that this would build on the previous plan, which was a first for the region when adopted in 2018.

Sunshine Coast Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski says the arts plan has been a genuinely positive influence.

“Council developed its first arts plan in 2018 to set the foundations for the creative arts to further flourish in the region – and flourish they did,” Cr Baberowski says.

“We’ve seen exceptional growth and real development in the sector over the past five years.’’

A recent sector survey very encouragingly found that 42 per cent of respondents are working full-time in the arts, which has increased from 31 per cent in 2017.

It also revealed that artists able to generate income from their practice has increased from 55 to 61 per cent.

In the years following the first arts plan, Sunshine Coast Council’s Creative

Arts and Events team led a series of focused development programs, designed to build the capacity of local artists and strengthen the region’s creative sector.

Ruby Donohoe, an interdisciplinary performance-maker whose exhibition This is Incomplete Without You was recently on show at Caloundra Regional Gallery, says the programs provided opportunities for artistic growth and challenge.

“These programs provide structured scaffolding for the development of new skills with the freedom for self-driven direction,” Ms Donohoe says.

“They are crucial for increased visibility within both industry and community.

“They also offer immeasurable tangential opportunities through connection – professional networks, audience development, partnership pathways and artistic collaborations.

“The fruits of these programs will ripple through for many years to come.”

“The arts provide us with ways to communicate that are a little bit left of centre”
Maz McGann

Cr Baberowski says two critical objectives have been to deliver more professional development and increase the number of spaces.

As a result, the Coast now has more arts venues and facilities, greater creative programming, and additional training opportunities for artists.

“These results are really a great testament to building a culture of sector collaboration and of council’s close relationship with its strategic advisors –the Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board.” Cr Baberowski says.

The teams behind the delivery of the Sunshine Coast Creative Arts Plan are ever mindful of the dynamics of the sector. The plan will be formally reviewed within the next five years, by 2028 – four years prior to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the planning and delivery of the 2032 Cultural Olympiad.

Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board chair Maz McGann has worked with local councils, arts and community organisations across Australia and says the arts are vitally important for connecting the community.

“It was fascinating at the height of the pandemic: people started to realise how important the arts were in terms of comfort, stimulation and staying connected,” Ms McGann says.

“People were locked down and anxious and isolated and they turned to books, music, film and even creating their own arts and craft. On a deeper level, the arts provide us with an opportunity to express ourselves in a way we might not otherwise be able to. It’s an assumption that we all communicate in a pretty linear way. That’s not the case. The arts provide us with ways to communicate that are a little bit left of centre, particularly when it comes to learning.”

Supporting First Nations artists, through their culture and ensuring they are more visible across the Coast through public art interpretation, is a vitally

important part of the creative arts plan.

“It’s really critical to have that. They are the oldest living culture in the world and the fact that we have those tens-ofthousands of years of knowledge and cultural complexities at our fingertips is a huge advantage for us,” Ms McGann says.

“There is so much learn. You talk to Indigenous people and the ideas of creativity and engaging in culture is embedded in their everyday life.”

The Events Centre Caloundra chief executive officer Bronwyn Edinger has been at the helm of the venue since late last year and is another strong advocate for the arts on the Coast.

“We are aligned with the notion that people have a right to experience art in their own communities,” Ms Edinger says.

“It means we can bring great music, ballet, comedy and other genres of performing arts to the Sunshine Coast, so people don’t have to travel to experience it.

“We have a really strong music focus, with some top-notch international and national names and we have increased our classical music, musical theatre and comedy focus.”

Passionate about giving local artists a platform for their work, Ms Edinger says she is focused on supporting them further, allowing them opportunities to achieve a more national profile.

“Areas I am focused on for the future is broadening the palette of local professional work that we have on offer for the community,” she says.

“We are ramping up our theatre program, circus, cabaret and professional dance and putting together a plan to better engage with the community to support our local professional performing artists.”

Ms McGann says The Events Centre is aiming to strengthen its impact in the community by offering discounted rates for some community groups to be able to access the program.

“We also support a senior choir who perform at the venue and we are helping a group of people who have been undertaking NDIS workshops who are performing a show in our smaller performance space next month,” she says.

“It is going to be such a special event for them, their family and friends.”

BRONZED CALOUNDRA SOAKS UP THE ACCOLADES

The coastal town proves it’s more than just a pretty face when it comes to being a Top Tourism Town on a national scale.

One of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic destinations has been recognised among the nation’s top three tourism towns.

After months of campaigning and celebration, Caloundra was awarded third place at the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards during a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra.

The slice of paradise received the honour after taking out the 2023 Queensland Top Tourism Town Awards, held by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council in June.

Brady Sullivan, the CEO of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, which spearheaded the campaign, says the Top Tourism Town Awards is propelling Caloundra onto the nation’s tourism

CLEANING UP RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES LOCALLY

A new $40.5 million facility capable of processing more than 60,000 tonnes of recyclable products annually is set to be operational by the end of the year.

Construction of the Sunshine Coast Material Recycling Facility (MRF) at Nambour, which will incorporate industry-leading intelligent sorting technology, is nearing completion,

The MRF is the first new-build facility and largest new investment in publicly owned recycling infrastructure in Southeast Queensland in a decade.

It will be able to process 60,000 tonnes or more per year to recover glass bottles, plastic containers, cardboard,

scene. “Our state and national success is a huge drawcard for Caloundra and the Sunshine Coast,” he says.

“Caloundra is well and truly on the map.”

Mr Sullivan says the national recognition will help attract vital investment to the region, including the funds needed to deliver projects including the Sunshine Coast Regional Art Gallery.

“Caloundra has been a loved holiday destination for countless generations and is at the centre of immeasurable family memories,” he says.

“Our recent awards will attract more families and travellers to Caloundra and ensure our town continues to grow its already great tourism offering with drawcards like the proposed Sunshine Coast Regional Art Gallery.”

A panel of judges decided the nation’s top three tourism towns from seven state winners.

The state winners were: Victoria’s Ballarat, Tasmania’s Devonport, Northern Territory’s Katherine, Western Australia’s Mandurah, New South Wales’ Newcastle and South Australia’s Victor Harbor.

Mandurah took out gold, with Ballarat claiming second place.

Noosa tour guide business Joel’s Journeys placed second in the Top Tour Guide category.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Brett Fraser says it is fantastic to see Caloundra being recognised.

“Queensland has no shortage of natural and local wonders to marvel. It’s fantastic to receive nationwide recognition for our award-winning holiday destinations,” he says.

The Top Tourism Town awards recognise Australian towns with a population over 5000 people that offer amazing visitor experiences.

The awards organisers are committed to working collectively to increase visitation to the regions.

paper and steel and aluminium cans, supplying a range of quality products for re-use across several industries.

This extra recycling capacity, combined with the intelligent sorting equipment, will deliver improved recycling outcomes, helping to reduce waste-to-landfill and create new circular economy opportunities in downstream markets.

“Sunshine Coast residents are keen recyclers and they’re telling me that they’re keen to do even more to reduce, reuse and recycle waste,” Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton says.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the facility will be a smart step forward to build on the council’s goal to be a zero-net emissions organisation by 2041.

GRANTING FUNDS TO BOOST LIFE IN BUDERIM

Community organisations in the Buderim area are benefitting from more than $97,000 supporting local projects.

The record funding is benefitting 21 organisations of the 4556-postcode area as part of the Buderim Foundation’s annual Community Grants Celebration.

It will contribute to projects ranging from kindergarten shade sails, dementia awareness programs and resources for cancer and palliative care patients, to mental health programs, animal rescue and assistance to purchase new vehicles for nursing.

Buderim Foundation grants committee chair Rebecca Ramsay says the foundation is delighted to provide a record funding amount this year of $97,942.

“These grants will make a big difference to the lives of many in our community, enabling the purchase of much-needed and, in some cases, life-saving equipment and financing vital infrastructure and vehicles,” she says.

“The grants come from earnings made from the foundation’s investment funds. So, it is thanks to everyone’s donations and the hard work of our investment committee that we are able to deliver the much-needed funding.

“The Buderim Foundation concept is simple and has three key components: money in, where donations and bequests are received; money managed, where these funds are carefully invested; and then money out, with the income from the investments distributed as grants to organisations supporting the 4556 community.”

This is the 16th year of the grants.

Since 2008, a total of $829,767 has been distributed to 97 not-for-profit community organisations.

For more information, visit buderimfoundation.org.au.

“Scheduled to open by the end of 2023, the new Nambour Materials Recovery Facility is set to deliver an even-smarter solution to recycling in our region,” Mayor Jamieson says.

“The facility will sort glass bottles and jars, paper, cardboard, plastics, steel cans and aluminium cans from household and business yellow-lidded bins at 98 per cent purity – the highest quality of any Australian recycling facility.”

Construction of the facility has been funded through a tripartite funding agreement between all levels of government.

It is enabling 80 local jobs during construction, while 18 new full-time positions are being established to run the facility once open.

I speak about my life and work experiences that led me to starting my business and everything I have learnt that will empower people to have strategies and inspiration to have it all.

Who will it appeal to? – Women, mainly, who either have a business or want to start one and want to know how to do business and children while maintaining sanity and not burning out. It is also for career changers who want to find their passion but are not sure how.

Why did you decide to write it? – I wanted to share my journey so that it could help others to achieve what I have in a very short time in business. I started documenting everything when I realised that my purpose is to help the masses find a job (or business) that they love, not just one they can do. I also found it very difficult trying to juggle being a mum and having a corporate career. I hope that my book can inspire and guide other mums to start their own business so they can have the flexibility to be there for their family while also feeling fulfilled in their work. What are some of the topics you cover? – Drive, flexibility, family, business, time, self-worth, money, growth, health, resilience, love, balance, vision, guidance.

Speaking of having your cake and eating it too, do you believe women can have it all: career and family balance?

– Yes. This is exactly the premise of my book. You can have it all but not at once. My book goes into detail of everything I

have put in place in my personal and business life so that I can be a present and loving mother while also being a great boss who takes care of my staff. It is a myth that you have to choose between one or the other. I also have downloadable ‘gold nuggets’ with strategies on how to do it.

If you could give yourself one piece of advice as an 18-year-old, what would it be?– That no matter what, there will be problems to solve. It is how you deal with them that makes you succeed. I don’t live with regrets as it makes me who I am today. But if I was to say one thing, it would be: nothing changes if nothing changes.

What are some of the biggest rewards of running your own business? – Balance in my work/personal life. I can choose to only work three days a week, so I have time for my family, and Friday is ‘Kate Day’. I get to go to the sports days, see friends, love my work and family – all in the same week.

What are the challenges? – Mindset is a big thing: 70 per cent of a successful business is based on mindset, and 30 per cent is the doing. You must be mentally fit and constantly strive to learn about yourself and be humble enough to own and take ownership where necessary. Some days are harder than others but on those not-so-good ones, take 24 hours to feel it and then dust it off and fix the problem.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of starting their own business? – Remember that you don’t know what you don’t know. Reach out to others who have walked your path before you and ask for help. I also have a coach. Every coach needs a coach, I believe, because we all need that mirror (but make sure you are willing to look into it). Have good mentors, supporters, friends and people who will have your back through thick and thin in your corner and you can’t go wrong.

lifeguard services this financial year provides 34 permanent lifeguards, two supervisors, a chief lifeguard and a casual pool of up to 96 lifeguards during peak season, across 22 patrolled beach locations from North Coolum to Bulcock Beach,” Councillor Rick Baberowski says. “It also provides our professional lifeguards with vital equipment they need to perform their duties, including jet skis, rescue boards, flags, first-aid kits and portable surveillance cameras for high-risk locations.”

up for the 2023-24 patrol season, and they’ll have their work cut out for them with more visitors likely.

An army of volunteers donned in red and yellow is manning beaches across the region as the surf lifesaving season kicks into gear.

Thousands of volunteer surf lifesavers and professional lifeguards are bracing for what is expected to be a challenging season, and beach-goers are being reminded of the dangerous of swimming in unpatrolled areas. The 2023-2024 volunteer surf lifesaving season began last weekend and will run until early next May with an

increased number of visitors expected during that time.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast regional operations manager Aaron Purchase says predicted hotter and dryer conditions this summer is likely to spark increased beach visitation.

“Traditionally, we see more people at the beach and in the water during hotter and drier summers,” Mr Purchase says.

“If they become complacent and stray from the red and yellow flags, they can very quickly get into trouble – sometimes with

“When it is really rough, it’s obvious that the conditions are dangerous and people stay out. But when it’s seemingly calmer, they enter the water or swim out a bit further than their ability should allow, thinking it’s safe. They can easily miss the hidden dangers, like rips. Our advice is always to stick to patrolled areas where lifeguards and lifesavers can see them.”

Throughout the 2022-23 season, lifeguards and lifesavers patrolling beaches in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area recorded more than 7.5 million visitations, performed 745 rescues and 111,059 preventative actions, and administered 3336 first-aid treatments.

Sunshine Coast Council invests funding into the lifeguard services, operated by Surf Life Saving Queensland across the region.

Among the changes now in place is a relocation of the existing lifeguard service from Golden Beach (Beach Access 317) to Happy Valley (Beach Access 293), due to more visitors to Happy Valley since the January 2022 breakthrough of Bribie Island. Volunteer lifesavers patrol at major Sunshine Coast and Noosa beaches every weekend and on public holidays from 7am to 5pm from September school holidays to early May, with extended hours to 6pm through the busy Christmas holiday period.

This vital service supports lifeguard patrols, which occur year-round.

Hello everyone,

There are some exciting changes on the horizon for our region’s fast-emerging heart and residents are invited to help shape its future.

Community consultation is underway for a proposed amendment to the Maroochydore City Centre Priority Development Area Development Scheme.  The proposed amendment will give effect to the key aspects of the revised master plan for this priority development area:

• Combining the waterway and parkland elements to create a central park and lake at the heart of the city centre

• Moving the proposed Exhibition and Convention Centre closer to the future transit centre

• Relocating the amphitheatre to the northern end of the central park. This new city centre belongs to the Sunshine Coast community. It will continue to grow and consolidate its place as the main centre for the Sunshine Coast and I urge community members – including residents, landowners, developers and business operators – to view the proposed amendment and provide feedback before consultation closes at 4.30pm on Monday, October 23.

People can visit haveyoursay.qld.gov.au to lodge a submission.

Anew state-of-the-art venue is about to take community, business and charity functions to new heights.

Opening in October, the venue will soon be taking bookings for a range of events including community functions, corporate events, charity fundraisers,

private celebrations such as weddings, workshops and so much more.

Inspired by the landscape of the Sunshine Coast and our deep connection to the hinterland, our mountain ranges and coastal plains, this is an exciting and welcome addition to the Maroochydore City Centre.

Altitude Nine will be managed by Council’s experienced Community Venues team with income from the venue offsetting costs of providing this service to the local community.

It will accommodate up to 180 people.

This new venue, which celebrates the Coast’s unique landscape, is set to be an outstanding location to host events that rise with the sun or settle in with the sunset, honouring the stunning natural environment of the region.

TIPS FOR LIVING WITH FLYING FOXES

It’s birthing season for flying foxes – for the females to give birth to one live pup and raise it.

This means their numbers in parks and reserves near the coastline may grow, and it’ll get noisier as the young get older and call for their mums.

This won’t last forever.

Flying foxes are seasonal animals that come and go. Council understands how difficult it can be living near flying-fox roosts in urban areas, and we have a long-term aim to entice flying foxes to a more suitable home.

Here are some tips for living with the noisy neighbours as they begin to raise their pups.

• Bring your washing in at night.

• Park your cars under shelter.

• Keep doors and windows closed at dawn and dusk to reduce disturbance during fly-in and fly-out.

• Remove or cover fruit and flowers on fruiting and flowering trees on your property.

• Keep dogs and cats inside at night and away from roost sites. Keep pet food and water indoors.

• Move quietly near roost sites to avoid disturbance – they make more noise when disturbed.

Visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ flyingfoxes for more on living near flying foxes.

Crucial next steps for beachfront ‘jewel’

Plans for a new central meeting place and seawall at Mooloolaba Foreshore have been finalised.

Apopular beachfront will gain enhanced protection from increasing climate change risks and impacts during the next stage of its revitalisation.

Following completion of the awardwinning Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Northern Parklands, the detailed design for Stage 2 – the Central Meeting Place and southern seawall – has now been finalised.

Council has called for expressions of interest to construct the new parkland – which received overwhelming community support during recent consultation – and to replace a seawall that dates back to the 1960s.

Assisted by a $7.95 million contribution through the Federal Government’s National Emergency Management Agency, Disaster Ready Fund, the ageing vertical seawall, which will not be sufficient to safeguard the community from rising sea levels and more extreme weather events into the future, will be replaced with a new terraced seawall.

The Central Meeting Place will feature a new shaded event and meeting space, open grassed areas, a viewing deck, new

THERE’S NOTHING ARTIFICIAL ABOUT THE HUMAN FACTOR

The tourism industry is all abuzz about artificial intelligence (AI).

It’s easy to see why, given the emergence of new AI tools such as ChatGPT making the technology increasingly available to businesses and individuals.

Whether you are a fan or not, the technology is already part of our day-today lives – from recommendations on what to watch on your streaming service to finding the best routes on Google Maps.

The fascinating aspect of AI in its current form is that it has the potential to transform industries and will no doubt influence and change the way we promote tourism destinations. To better understand how we can harness this potential, we held an event on Demystifying AI for Visit Sunshine Coast members last week.

Naturally, we couldn’t resist kicking off the event using an AI-generated host,

before the expert panel explained that while machines can’t yet ‘think’ for themselves, there are so many ways businesses can leverage machine-learning technology to be more efficient or even differentiate their products and services. The range of applications are virtually limitless – spanning everything from creating social media content, writing job descriptions and analysing data to creating presentations and imagery – as long as there is a human fact-checker on hand.

One thing we can all agree on is, AI can never replace all-important human touch and connection, which makes the region so special for our visitors.

GREAT OUTDOORS BECKON FOR FUN IN THE SUNSHINE

Spring is a beautiful time of the year on the Sunshine Coast.

The days are warming up and it’s the ideal opportunity to get out and about and enjoy what our naturally diverse region has to offer.

Here are three top options to enjoy the great outdoors this season.

GET MOVING

Spring is a good excuse to wander along the 25km stretch from Golden Beach to Mooloolaba, otherwise known as a popular section of the Coastal Pathway.

Families will enjoy the hours of fun in the rock pools and beachfront saltwater pool at Kings Beach along the way. The kids will love discovering the local wildlife and watching for fish flitting beneath the surface of the water.

ENJOY A DAY AT THE MARKETS

Head to Eumundi and immerse yourself in one of the largest artisan markets in the Southern Hemisphere.

Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to browse the many eclectic stalls and sample the plethora of wonderful food and drink stalls.

You will find a treasure trove of clothes, local art and fresh produce on offer – more than enough to keep you occupied on a beautiful spring day (Wednesdays and Saturdays).

PICNIC TIME

Springtime equals picnic-time on the Sunshine Coast and, fortunately, we have plenty of stunning locations to enjoy your sandwiches and cake. Among them is the magnificent Jack Harrison Park, nestled near Wappa Dam (just west of Yandina). With lush deciduous trees reclaiming their lost winter foliage, peaceful green flats and benches to watch the view, you’ll be set to lay down a blanket and let the afternoon pass by.

Adding the vital sustainability ingredient

The Sunshine Coast has become a hub for celebrating sustainable shopping habits that support local producers and the environment.

Hoping to add more choice for wholesome goodness to the community, Alex and Alyssa Eimbrodt have opened Pantree Sunshine Coast. What does Pantree Sunshine Coast offer the community? Our main goal is to provide a sustainable shopping experience. We offer organic wholefoods, eco home and body products, bulk liquid refills, as well as beautiful local and sustainable brands that are nice for your body and the

planet. We also make up gorgeous (and delicious) chocolate gift jars. We can help people make them in store, so they're full of products that they love. What inspired you to go down this path of organic wholefoods? We have always had a love for the environment and our natural world and we have both worked on whale-watching boats in the past and dreamed of owning our own business where we could show people how important it is to treat our Earth with love and kindness and promote the conservation of our beautiful oceans. Alex's brother, Jason, opened up Pantree in NSW five years

ago and after a few chats, we thought this could be a great way to promote sustainability and conservation. How can customers help contribute to sustainable shopping? All of our customers are encouraged to bring their own containers, jars and bottles so they can refill all of their food and bulk liquid items over and over again, rather than paying for plastic bottles and bags. Being able to buy in bulk also means that our customers can buy as much (or as little) as they like. If you want to try a new recipe, you can come and purchase the exact amounts. What do you love about your job? We love helping people to make small changes in their lives to move toward having less waste and toxins in their home. Endeavouring to be waste and/ or toxin-free can often leave people, including myself, feeling incredibly overwhelmed and it's easy to choose to do nothing when you're overwhelmed. I love to chat with people about one small thing they could change this week or month and just focus on that. Also, supplying quality products and ingredients that help to nourish our community. Plus, chocolate because it brings joy, and it's all about balance. Do you support any local growers and producers? Since opening in June, we've doubled the amount of local suppliers and brands we have. Using Jason's blueprint to open our store meant we could get up and running quickly. Now we are working through the shop to see which items we can swap and what products we can find that are made on the Coast. Find Pantree Sunshine Coast at Shop 2, 5 Burns Street, Buddina or visit the Pantree Sunshine Coast Facebook page.

Garden of Indigenous fare

Catbird Restaurant and First Nations catering group Three Little Birds have teamed up to launch a new menu focused on locally sourced, handmade, seasonal and Indigenous botanicals.

Three Little Birds was founded by First Nations chef Chris Jordan, born in Maclean, NSW, on traditional Bunjalung land. Using native ingredients and ancient knowledge of customs and techniques, his food acknowledges, educates and celebrates the unique culture and natural resources Australia has to offer.

“Three Little Birds is super excited to have started this journey with Catbird,” Mr Jordan says.

“The menu celebrates the incredible Indigenous botanicals that not only taste amazing but also nourish us.

“By sourcing locally with deadly suppliers like My Dillybag and Galeru, creating opportunity for Indigenous employment and a safe space for LBGTQI+, we aim to create a diverse, friendly environment in the iconic garden setting at Fairhill. We can’t wait to share.”

One dish featured in the collaboration is the wattleseed ricotta dumplings with Falls Farm honey pumpkin (pictured). The menu also combines Japanese and Brazilian influence, thanks to head chef Lucas Saeki.

Some of these dishes include black tahini and miso pancake with orange, fingerlime and macadamia praline, lemon myrtle rice balls with seaweed, saltbush and ooray umeboshi ponzu, and salt-baked yams with myrtle emulsion and native dukkha.

Catbird Restaurant is in Fairhill Native Botanic Gardens, Yandina, and is fully licensed, with a strong selection of local beers, organic wines and spirits. Lunch is available Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Bookings are recommended at catbird.com.au.

BETTING ON BAD BEHAVIOUR

Jane Stephens wonders how governments can clamp down on smoking and gambling on one hand, then rely on those taxes to prop up budgets.

The complaints about the Nanny State and Big Brother are shrill at times, but without them, we would be in the poor house.

Our vices prop up the government’s budget. The government collected an eye-watering $14.3 billion in tobacco duty in the most recent reported period. And governments collect a further $6 billion in gambling taxes.

At best, the government’s ethics have been wildly out of kilter for generations, relying on us to keep sinning to be able to pay for our basic societal needs. It is a strange world where the government needs that tax revenue to keep the coffers in the black, but then some of that has to be spent on the resulting sickness (smoking) and welfare support (gambling).

This month, the government has come down a bit heavier on gamblers and smokers. Two years after it was recommended, the federal government has banned gambling with credit cards, bringing it in line with in-person wagering.

Figures from the Australian Communication and Media Authority show that last year, 11 per cent of Australians indulged in online gambling in the previous

six months – up from eight per cent in 2020. Digital technology means gambling is available 24/7. Online gamblers will also now be subjected to the spoken-so-fastyou-can’t-quite-make-it-out warnings that regular gamblers have thrown at them, and also the visual cautions.

The government is updating its nicotine messaging, too, with individual cigarettes having to be printed with warnings about smoking dangers. Smokers will delight in watching the message literally go up in smoke, I am sure. No flavourings will be allowed anymore. No cutesy names. No packaging with anything arty. Apparently, the smoking rate has dropped to 11 per cent, but we are off the National Tobacco Strategy target of having just five per cent of the population on the puffers by 2030.

Tobacco kills more than 50 Australians a day and is our leading cause of preventable death and disability. The new tobacco laws come into effect next April. But under the current model, the government would go bust if we all became puritans or members of the temperance society. They need us to keep indulging in our bad behaviour – just not too much.

What a crazy, mixed-up world.

TEEING UP A SHOT AT THE EASY LIFE

Ashley Robinson knows that some weekends, it’s easier to cash in the chips and go home when a ‘simple’ errand ends up in the rough.

My nearly 10-year-old grandson recently decided he wanted to play golf. And while he writes right handed and kicks a footy with the right foot, he has decided he will be a left-handed golfer.

A red-headed, ambidextrous kid should be pretty tough by the time he gets through puberty. Anyway, it became my job to find him a few clubs (I was assigned the job via Old Mate).

“Shouldn’t be too hard. Go to the dump shop,” I was told. So, last Saturday, I also had the pleasure of taking him to the Sharks footy presentation as his Mum and Dad were busy celebrating a birthday on a brewery tour – which sounded like a whole lot more fun than footy. Funny that a couple of years ago, I got to take him to his soccer preso for the same reason. Seems their timing is excellent.

After presentations, we went to Caloundra dump shop. A thousand old clubs – none of them left handed. Same at Maroochydore dump shop and Headland Pro Shop. Saturday was taken care of, and then I get told by Old Mate she has found some on Facebook Marketplace at Maleny.

So, my Sunday morning was planned for me. She hands me $20, tells me it’s for three clubs for an unbelievable price, and here is the address. I get there and eventually find a nice lady out the back of a house that resembled an episode of TV’s Steptoe and Son. She brings the clubs out and, I must say, they are mint. I hand her the $20. She says, ‘No, they are 20 each or three for 50’ which, I might add, were well worth it. Guess what? I had no more cash.

To make things worse, I only had a credit card, not a debit card. I ring Old Mate and tell her my problem. ‘What are you going to do?’ she says. Anyway, she tells me to go to Woolies and buy something to get cash out, which I have never done as I have never been allowed because of bank charges and the fact I live with a miser.

Of course, I buy two packets of barbecue chips and go ‘yes’ to cash out. Declined. I try again, as the line builds up behind me. Declined. A couple more calls. No cash. No chips and I get accused of forgetting my pin.

Eventually, I get the cash and the clubs. What a debacle. I hope the grandson can play golf better than I can manage my life and the boss of me.

HARBOURING A SECRET

Sami Muirhead shares a milestone birthday this year with celebrities and superstars, but only one grand lady really takes the cake.

The grandest of ladies in Australia is surely Sydney Opera House (followed closely by Ita Buttrose and Aileen from TV’s Home and Away).

The iconic landmark turns 50 this year. The building, not the living legends. The Opera House and I have a bit in common as I, too, nudge my halfcentury milestone birthday in just weeks. We both have cracks appearing after five decades of wear and tear and a bit too much booze spilt over us over the years.

The Opera House is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. I am not. But some days I feel I could be heritage listed, with the scaffolding starting to need extra support on this body to hold it all together.

Half-a-century comes with wrinkles and sagging, but it also comes with more certainty of who I am and which people I want to surround myself with. I also did my back trying to limbo at the work staff party last week.

I am not quite sure how I got to be 50, but I am not having a huge bash. Instead, I am celebrating slowly over 12 months – catching up with small groups

of special people in my life. Last weekend, one of my life-long friends and I flew to Sydney and went to see Miss Saigon at the Opera House.

You know its 50 years since Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War ended. It was all just meant to be as we both stood there toasting turning 50 in the

REFRAMING THE PHASES OF GROWING OLDER

We categorise people as young, middle aged or old, simplifying the life span into these groups.

And the groups are not based solely on age. Rather, we tend to slot people into one or other depending on our own age.

Increasingly, I am finding that the world is full of young people, including my doctor and dentist. However, age is much more complex than this.

We think about our age in a variety of ways. Sometimes we take a chronological perspective. We identify with our chronological age and simply state our age in years. But sometimes we identify with our subjective age. This is the age you feel yourself to be. I often hear people saying, “I feel my age today”.

Thirdly, we have a functional age.

This is related to physical and cognitive capacity to do what you want to do. I think that functional age often determines subjective age.

age is a period of freedom with the time and health to enjoy it. I believe he was thinking about first world populations.

Laslett added in the concept of a fourth age. Now, we know that those considered elderly are a diverse group. Some people are simply elderly/older. Others have cognitive and physical impairments.

Laslett made the distinction between the third and fourth age based on this difference, saying the fourth age is marked by dependence, decrepitude and death.

iconic building that is 50 as well. Nice.

It just doesn’t seem real that I am a real adult now. But then we are all getting older, and I am in good company. Other celebs turning 50 this year include Gwyneth Patrow, Sofia Vergara, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Garner and Eminem.

Lose yourself in those facts! How the heck can this be true?

But the fairest of them all to me will always be the Opera House.

Researcher Peter Laslett in the 1980s broke it down as the first, second, third and fourth age. Unsurprisingly, the first age is considered to be the age of preparation for the world. It involves education, socialisation, growing up in readiness for adult roles.

The second age is the time of productivity, work and family creation.

The third age starts in retirement. Laslett moved the third age from being an all-encompassing class of old people to being a more optimistically framed group.

Rather than focusing on ageing problems, Laslett believed that the third

I think the value in Laslett’s simple addition of a fourth age is to remove the negativity that seeps into ageing.

Many older people seem to see themselves on a slippery slide into dependence and decrepitude even when they are still actively in the third age.

The category of the fourth age gives us language to acknowledge difference.

To say someone is in the fourth age provides information and a simple and respectful distinction. I wish you a very long third age and a very short fourth age.

HINTERLAND IS LEADING THE REVIVAL

Hinterland property prices are booming as the Sunshine Coast undergoes a real estate revival. A host of inland localities are among the nation’s top growth suburbs from June to August.

Mapleton, Glenview, Mooloolah Valley, Palmview and Witta were just some of the hot spots, property experts at CoreLogic report.

Mapleton’s median value jumped 8.9 per cent to $904,653.

CoreLogic executive research director Tim Lawless believes prospective buyers are lining up for hinterland real estate, which is cheaper than on the coast, but there isn’t enough to go around, which pushed up prices.

“This area is showing extremely low levels of advertised supply, with listings 17 per cent lower than at the same time a year ago and 40 per cent below the decade average,” he says.

“The strength in the market looks to be a case of demand outweighing supply.”

Property prices on the Sunshine Coast, in general, have experienced an upward swing. The region was ranked sixth, among 108 in Australia, for value

growth during the past three months, with a gain of 1.6 per cent.

“The region has been recording a consistent rise in values over the past six months, since bottoming out in February,” Mr Lawless says.

“Sunshine Coast housing values are up 4.1 per cent since finding a floor but remain 9.6 per cent below the record high set in May last year.”

Mr Lawless says the region’s recent property surge is also due to high demand, fuelled by newcomers to the region, outstripping supply.

“Advertised supply levels remain very

tight across the Sunshine Coast region, trending lower through the year to date to be 40 per cent below the decade average,” he says. “At the same time, demand from internal migration remains strong, with the Regional Australia Institute noting the Sunshine Coast receives the largest share of net internal migration of any region nationally.”

Mr Lawless is unsure if hinterland property prices will continue to rise at the same pace in coming months.

“It’s unlikely growth rates will remain this high for long, simply due to affordability constraints becoming more

pronounced and demand deflecting to more affordable areas of the Coast,” he says.

“However, if advertised supply levels remain low relative to demand, it’s likely values are set to rise further from here.”

Mr Lawless expects property growth to increase slowly in the broader region.

“The growth trend looks entrenched across the Sunshine Coast but is no longer accelerating like we were seeing earlier in the recovery,” he says.

“Considering available supply generally remains low across the Coast and demand seems to be outweighing supply, it’s likely we will continue to see prices rising. The trend in listings will be a key factor to watch through spring and early summer. This is when listings activity is normally seasonally strong.

“We could see at least a partial rebalancing between supply and demand if listings rise substantially from their current levels.”

QUALITY AT THE FORE OF BUSINESS

Property firm’s boutique marketing approach to each home highlights individuality

Tristan Kurz is a familiar name on the Sunshine Coast. The prominent businessman and long-time supporter of the local community joined his family’s prestigious automotive business Coastline BMW in 2005, eventually running it until it sold in 2017. Despite his family background and success at the helm of its business, Tristan says he always had a love of property.

“Even as a kid, I was fascinated by property. When we sold the family business, I just knew I would somehow end up in the real estate industry,” he says.

Not one to shy away from following his dreams, Tristan partnered with seasoned real estate professional Carly Nazer and with the assistance of leading real estate photographer, Cade Mooney, launched Nazer Kurz Real Estate – a Caloundra-based agency that has already achieved over $30 million in contracts, servicing all areas of the Sunshine Coast.

“I could not have achieved this success without Carly,” Tristan says. “Carly started working in real estate at the age of 15 while she was still at high school. She has such a strong background in

administration and property management, and she has a genuine love for the aesthetic and attention to detail. She has added a creative flair to the brand that I simply could not have done myself.”

Their ethos is simple: To achieve the ultimate price in the most cost-effective and stress-free manner. And for Tristan and Carly, it all comes down to hard work, creative thinking and an unwavering pursuit of providing a quality experience from start to finish.

“For me, the most important thing in real estate is the marketing,” says Tristan. “If you bring across all the emotion that property carries, you are going to attract more people.

“At the end of the day, that means more people will come through the property, which means more offers.

“I know that sounds so simple, but sometimes that execution can be so hard. If you get that right, you are going to achieve a great outcome for the seller.”

And while it’s one thing to have a beautiful property to sell, Tristan says it is important to create content for each campaign that embodies what that particular property is about.

The stunning video presentations on each property are testament to their outstanding attention to detail and passion to tell the story behind the home.

“We wanted to take it to another level,” Tristan says. “We build a standalone website for every single listing that we do. We have different signage for every listing. The quality of our invitations to open homes and the effort we put into our photos and our film is all the highest quality. We just love to sell beautiful houses. It doesn’t matter if it’s $600,000 or $6 million, it’s all about marketing the property with individuality and quality.”
