n a world grappling with climate change and the challenges of feeding a growing population, not to mention the rising cost of living, it’s no wonder Sunshine Coast Libraries’ new Seed Library is blossoming, with a sustainable community collection now available at Kawana and Maleny libraries. The initiative means new and existing library members can plant, grow and harvest their crops and then have the option to return seeds from the plant or donate different varieties back for others. Kicking off in February this year, the program has been such a big success that it has extended well beyond its initial six-month trial. This week, journalist Shirley Sinclair chats with the founder of the Sunshine Coast seed library initiative and discovers how the program is bringing the community together to work towards a more resilient and sustainable future. Turn to page 10 for the full story. Until next time, enjoy the read!

or years, Sue and Lloyd Clarke endured a “rollercoaster ride” after the tragic death of their daughter Hannah and her three children. There were highs and lows as they fought to raise coercive control awareness in the aftermath of the shocking incident. However, their long ride appears almost over, thanks to a landmark bill in
Queensland’s parliament. Coercive control is set to become a standalone offence, with Queensland to join NSW by criminalising it under proposed laws introduced by Health Minister Shannon Fentiman. The new offence will carry a maximum penalty of 14 years’ jail. The Clarkes welcomed the bill outside parliament, along with the family of Allison Baden-Clay, who was

AGENDA murdered by her husband 11 years ago. “We’ve had some tears and I’m starting to go now, but it’s been a collective effort,” Mrs Clarke says. Mr Clarke adds: “Over the years, it’s been one hell of a rollercoaster ride – highs and lows – but we’re getting there.” Hannah, 33, and her young children – Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey – died after being set on fire in their car by her estranged husband Rowan Baxter in February 2020. Sue and Lloyd Clarke have been advocating for coercive control to be criminalised ever since, earning 2022 Queensland Australian of the Year honours for their efforts. They operate the Small Steps 4 Hannah Foundation, which educates children and supports victims and their families. Coercive control is a form of abuse where perpetrators display a pattern of manipulative behaviour designed to intimidate and isolate the victim. “It’s very subtle,” Mrs Clarke says. “When (Hannah) first started going out with him, he got her to shut her Facebook page down ... “She couldn’t walk up the beach in bikinis and, slowly over time, more and more things come.” The Clarkes have been joined by Ms Baden-Clay’s family in the fight for coercive control criminalisation. “I believe that Alison didn’t realise what she was going through,” Ms Baden-Clay’s sister Vanessa Fowler says. “We didn’t see any black eyes or broken bones. “All of that was insidious, and it was happening behind closed doors.” The Queensland Premier saluted the Clarkes for their dedication, saying they deserved credit for the new laws.
“Anyone who has met them has been touched by not only the tragedy that they have gone through but how they have now devoted their life to making a difference,” Annastacia Palaszczuk told parliament recently. Queensland passed laws in February to define domestic violence as including behaviour patterns over time. Ms Palaszczuk says coercive control has “no place in modern Queensland”. The new law is expected to come into effect in January 2025. Ms Fentiman says communities can now focus on educating women and families to identify when coercive control is occurring and reporting it. The government will also address an affirmative model of consent in the bill. It will criminalise the tampering or removing of a condom without consent – called stealthing – to bring Queensland in line with other jurisdictions, barring the Northern Territory and Western Australia. In addition, Queensland courts will also consider relevant domestic violence or criminal history in their decisions. They will have more power to respond to protection application orders to protect people most at risk, and award costs to prevent perpetrators from using the legal process to abuse victims further. Domestic violence complainants and other witnesses will be under the protected witness scheme, and courts will be allowed to give directions to juries and hear expert witnesses on domestic violence. – AAP. A one-way trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway involves crossing 3901 bridges. Not only is the Trans-Siberian Railway the longest railroad in Russia, but it is also the longest one in the world. The journey takes seven days, during which time passengers pass through eight different time zones and all those bridges.
A form of projector appeared in the 1950s and became a popular type of home entertainment. These projectors were used to put on slide shows of individual frames of images, one frame at a time. Generally, they were used to show snaps of family holidays or special occasions. Slide projectors were rendered irrelevant when video projectors became more affordable and accessible.
By the numbers You probably have heard about the popular cosmetics in the Victorian era that were riddled with arsenic – but it gets worse. People once ate arsenic to improve their skin. There were also products on the market in the late 19th century, such as Dr James P. Campbell’s Safe Arsenic Complexion Wafers that were meant to be eaten. The wafers claimed to get rid of freckles, blackheads and other “facial disfigurements”.
Today in history – October 19 1493 – Streptomycin is discovered. The miracle antibiotic that became the first line of defence against tuberculosis in the mid-20th century was isolated for the first time by graduate student Albert Schatz while working under Selman Abraham Waksman at Rutgers University in the US.

COVER STORY
“It’s great to see so many people from our local community getting involved” Katrina Nielsen Psaltis Cauley
PLANTING THE SEEDS OF A GREAT IDEA Sunshine Coast Libraries branch out further to help gardeners of all ages grow their knowledge and plant varieties. WORDS: Shirley Sinclair.
I
t’s a movement that’s banking on a different kind of withdrawal and deposit system to boost stocks in a very important resource for the future. Collecting and swapping seeds that are found locally in an area or are heirloom (non-hybrid) and openpollinated (true to the type and resembling the original plant), passed down from generation to generation, is a practice that has been undertaken by First Nations people and European farmers around the world for hundreds of years or more. The practice aims to preserve flower, fruit and vegetable varieties that might otherwise be lost forever. For more than 20 years, community seed libraries have been sprouting up in numerous pockets of the globe. Maleny Seed Library has been operating for more than a year, working out of the local library and at a seed and harvest swap group. “I believe everyone in the community should have access to free and locally gathered seed,” the group’s founder and

coordinator Psaltis Cauley says. “Growing food should be free or as cheap as possible. “I put a call out to the Maleny community for support to get a seed library running and was overwhelmed. “The local library seemed like the best place to run a seed library and they got on board straight away. Amanda (Kennedy), the Maleny Library supervisor, has been incredible.” The idea for a wider coastal and hinterland seed library had been germinating for a while, driven largely by the Maleny volunteers. After logistics were worked out, Sunshine Coast Council launched the seed library service for seasoned green thumbs, novice gardeners and young plant enthusiasts alike in February this year. The idea soon took root. In fact, it has blossomed and grown to the point where the two-way seed exchange at Maleny and Kawana libraries has been extended well past the initial six-month trial. New and existing library members can use the seeds to plant, grow and harvest
their home-garden crops of heirloom fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, as well as local plant varieties including flowers. They then have the option of returning seeds from those plants or making donations from a different variety back to the library. The two specific library branches act as coastal and hinterland distribution, collection and swap points. Also, importantly, they educate growers to help
increase their success and drive our community towards seed sustainability. Library programs and marketing officer Katrina Nielsen says the initiative has been “a massive success” – not surprising, given the rising cost of living and popularity of people growing food items at home. “We’re really keen to see the seed library continue to grow into the future,” Ms Nielsen says. myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY “It is great to see so many people from our local community getting involved.” Since the February launch, the libraries have given out just over 3000 seed packets, and have received more than 1000 donations, as well as another 1200 from Maleny Seed Library. Ms Cauley says about 20 Maleny Seed Library volunteers support the libraries by packing seeds, with usually about 10-15 at any one session. “They are amazing,” she adds. “The seed library couldn’t function without their community spirit and commitment.” Residents can donate seeds at any Sunshine Coast Libraries branch. “Anything that people have growing at home, they can share some seeds with us,” Ms Nielsen says. “There isn’t really a limit. “We have had many different sorts. “It’s been a wide variety. “It is all definitely locally grown.” Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston has said that the seed library collection allows the community to swap, grow and work towards seed sustainability. “The seed library provides a wonderful opportunity for everyone from young and old to new and experienced green thumbs to learn new skills and fall in love with gardening,” Cr Johnston says. “Beyond providing an opportunity to sustainably grow your own edible garden, the Seed Library promotes connection to community and the natural environment.” Ms Cauley says it has been wonderful that the council ran with the idea. “Now it’s time for other communities to get on board and make it happen,” she says. “Seed from the community for the community is the absolute best outcome I could have ever hoped for.” For opening hours and library location details, visit library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov. au/Visit/Library-Locations.
HOW DO I TAKE PART? The seed library consists of two boxes of seeds for swapping, created by the Maleny Seed Library volunteer group. One box is kept at Maleny Library in the hinterland; the other is housed at Kawana Library, covering the coastal region. Customers can collect and/or donate seeds during library opening hours at these branches. Seed boxes are shelved in Adult Non-fiction (Gardens and Plants) collections for easy access. Sign up as a library member if you haven’t already. Library members are welcome to four seed packets per swap (once a month) to take home and grow. When your plant has grown and set seed, harvest some of these seeds to donate back to the seed library. Use the labelled envelopes supplied to donate your seed. Include as much information about your seeds as possible, such as: • common name if known • variety if known • date collected • place of collection (what suburb to identify the desired area to grow) • conditions of growth (for example, if a stake was used, amount of sunlight and water) • when to plant. Place the packet into the separate donation box, which works on an honesty system, provided in the library.
HOW DO WE BENEFIT FROM SEED LIBRARIES? Seed libraries: • cultivate, store and share seeds within their community • usually maintain their collections through donations from members, but may also operate as pure charity operations intent on serving gardeners and farmers • provide educational tools necessary to be a successful seed saver • preserve agricultural biodiversity by focusing on rare, local and heirloom seed varieties • help a community to retain its right to access a natural resource that should be available to all • help crops and plants adapt to different climates and ecologies, ensure food security, and provide an alternative to genetically-modified crops.
DID YOU KNOW? The first formal seed library is believed to have opened in 1999 at California’s Berkeley Ecology Center in the United States and was aptly named the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library (BASIL). Various seed libraries have sprouted since then all over the world in hundreds of public libraries, community centres, community food pantries, environmental groups’ headquarters and botanical gardens. Packets of seeds for flowers, fruits, vegetables and edible plants are usually available, typically for free, to encourage new and seasoned gardeners and children to sow and grow at home.

Get ready Sunshine Coast residents can take steps to help safeguard their family, home and business before and during major weather events. This includes understanding your risk, preparing an emergency plan and packing an emergency kit. For a full list, head to getready.qld.gov.au. NEW TECHNOLOGY TO HELP COMBAT BUSHFIRES Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed a ‘potentially life-saving’ response that has already proved its worth in California.
A
‘smoke alarm for the bush’ could help the Sunshine Coast during bushfire season, with the new world-leading tool to help safeguard people, properties and the region’s natural assets. Developed by local company exci (formerly Fireball International), this AI-assisted program analyses satellite images and on-ground cameras to swiftly spot heat and smoke. exci, meaning ‘alarm’ in Latin, already has been used to great effect in wildfireravaged California in the US. Once a fire is detected, emergency services and local councils will receive immediate reports and can consider an appropriate response in consultation with partner agencies. Local Disaster Management Group chair and Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson are welcoming the announcement for this potentially
life-saving technology. Mayor Jamieson made the announcement at the launch of Get Ready Queensland Week, which ran from October 9 to 16. The week encourages residents to know their risk, prepare contingency plans and pack an emergency kit. While previous seasons have focused on storms and flood risks, the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting this one to bring heatwaves and threat of severe bushfires due to the El Niño weather pattern. Cr Jamieson says the roll-out of the bushfire detection system in the region is the result of a collaboration between Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, HQ Plantations and Powerlink, as well as Sunshine Coast-based businesses exci and Land Watch Australia. “Council’s primary focus is to ensure the safety of our communities and exci’s sophisticated system will help us rapidly
respond to bushfire threats,” he says. “The swift arrival of our firefighters can be the difference between an easily contained minor incident and a major bushfire that can lead to extensive destruction.” exci managing director Christopher Tylor says he is pleased to deliver an Australian-made and owned fire detection system for the Coast. “The exci system can automatically detect bushfires within minutes, using satellite and ground-based sensor data analysed by powerful, machine-learning algorithms,” he says. Mr Tylor says exci will collaborate with Land Watch Australia, a family-owned business located in Palmwoods, known for delivering remote, camerasurveillance solutions to Australian farmers and rural communities. “Their expertise in crafting rugged terrain-specific camera systems aligns with our wildfire detection technology, making them the ideal hardware partner for us,” Mr Tylor says. “exci and Land Watch Australia have begun installing cameras at new sites located at Gerrards Lookout at Maleny, Dulong Lookout and Mount Coolum.”
DESALINATION PLANT SITE Kawana has been earmarked as a possible location for a new desalination plant to be delivered as part of a 30-year water strategy endorsed by the state government. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has told parliament the plant will be delivered by 2035. Water Minister Glenn Butcher says early estimates put the cost at $4-8 billion. He says Queensland’s grid must be prepared for booming population growth combined with climate challenges, and the Sunshine Coast was a logical choice for the new plant. “Part of the detailed business case that they will put forward from Seqwater (Queensland’s bulk water supply authority) will identify how big it needs to be at that particular time, how much water will they be using out of it, and certainly the location as well,” he says. – with AAP.
STEPPING OUT FOR DANIEL Now in its 19th year, the annual Day for Daniel promises to be even bigger and redder than ever. Every year, the day starts with the Walk for Daniel, which is about four kilometres long, starting at Suncoast Christian College at Woombye and finishing at Briggs Park at Palmwoods. The walk follows the same path 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe took from Palmwoods to Nambour Connection Road in Woombye before he was abducted. It symbolises a trip home Daniel was not able to complete. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation, founded by his parents, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, held the first walk in November 2005. This year’s event is on October 27 from 6am. It is estimated more than two million people across Australia will participate in Day for Daniel this year. Registration for the walk is essential at danielmorcombe.com.au.

Pat suffered an inoperable brain bleed after being hit in the back of the head while coming to the aid of a mate during a night out in Melbourne in April 2016. While it’s impossible to ‘move on’ from the grief, they’re ‘moving forward’ with their mission to spare other parents a similar anguish. Now the Pat Cronin Foundation reaches about 70,000 young people each
year with its Violence is Never OK presentation. Sunshine Coast Grammar School at Forest Glen and Immanuel Lutheran College, Buderim, recently became the first schools in Queensland to embrace the foundation’s innovative presentations. “Seven years ago when we set up the foundation, we never dreamed we’d be delivering educational presentations to around 70,000 young people each year,” Mrs Cronin says. “There have been over 170 deaths from ‘coward punches’ in Australia since the year 2000, not to mention the thousands of people hospitalised each year due to assaults that often result in tragic, lifelong consequences for victims, families and the perpetrators.” This year, the foundation has visited schools and sports clubs throughout Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, as well as recently appointing staff in Queensland. “By giving young people everywhere an understanding of Pat’s story, raising awareness of the impact of violence and offering practical tips and strategies to deal with anger and aggression, we hope to reduce the alarming statistics,” Mr Cronin says. “The feedback we’re getting is that our programs are truly transformative in changing attitudes to violence, and we urge all schools to take advantage of them.” Schools can find out more at patcroninfoundation.org.au.
Leigh Parker was born to act. But growing up on the Sunshine Coast, it was hard to imagine he would ever make a career of it. “It’s just not a common thing, right?” he says, frowning. After starring in several commercials, he landed a job with Brainstorm Productions: one of Australia’s leading educational theatre companies. At 19, he was making more money than his dad. “All of a sudden, it was like, ‘Oh, this is an actual career path’,” Parker says. “That was the moment that it clicked.” Parker worked with Brainstorm Productions for two years. “As I was coming to the end of that second tour, I decided I just wanted to immerse myself in this,” he says. “I just wanted to act morning, noon and night, every day.” That drive led him to audition for a place at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. He was shortlisted, but not accepted. “It was an interesting thing because I was, of course, disappointed, but I couldn’t shake this feeling of like, ‘So, what’s this making space for?’.” The answer came a few months later, when he was invited to visit Los Angeles as part of an acting masterclass.
He was 21 and stayed there for three months, during which time he applied for a permanent visa. “It was scary. When I moved there, I had no money. I spent all the money that I had getting my visa,” he says. Culture shock was a problem, too, but he worked hard and, just 18 months later, he booked his first guest star role on the hit TV show Supernatural. In 2014, Parker starred opposite Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in ABC’s Castle. That same year, he also featured in Wild, a film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and starring Reese Witherspoon. He still recalls chatting with Witherspoon in between takes. “We were just having a conversation and it was just lovely and real,” Parker says. “Then Jean-Marc would call action, and nothing would change. It was like the lines were a continuation of the conversation that we were already having.” For Parker, being around such talented actors was a gift. “They say, ‘Don’t meet your heroes’,” he says. “Like, why not? I think for the most part, they’re awesome people.” For a while, the jobs kept coming, but – as is the way in the acting world – things eventually started to slow down. It was 2019 and Parker was nearing 30. He’d been living

violence-prevention program to honour a 19-year-old, onepunch victim is being rolled out in Queensland schools, with the Sunshine Coast the first in the state to welcome the initiative. Seven-and-a-half years ago, Matt and Robyn Cronin had to make the agonising decision to turn off life support for their son Pat.

ACTOR FINDS HIS PLACE IN TEACHING SPOTLIGHT Students perform an elaborate dance number, filling the stage with a flurry of colour and motion. A young boy waits in the wings, eagerly anticipating his cue to join in. He wears a green leotard and yellow dishwashing gloves – a homemade costume crafted by his loving mother. He’s starring as a green tree frog in the school play, but one day he’ll be in Hollywood, acting alongside the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Nathan Fillion.

HISTORIC COAST SCHOOL WELCOMES UPGRADES Construction has started on a new learning centre at a 140-year-old Sunshine Coast school. The $19.6 million project at Yandina State School will include a two-storey building with six learning areas, administration facilities, office spaces, visiting specialist rooms, a staffroom, meeting and conference rooms, outdoor learning area, undercroft, amenities and a lift. The school’s tennis court and maintenance shed also will be replaced as part of the project, along with the construction of a new car park with additional spaces. Some technical services will be upgraded. These include a new fire booster cabinet and pump with dedicated fire hydrant service, a new pad-mounted transformer, information and communications technology works and an improved security system. Principal Michael Cookman is welcoming investment in the project. “We’re really looking forward to seeing these new facilities take shape – particularly the new learning centre, which is much needed for our growing community,” he says. Minister for Education Grace Grace says the improvements will help students’ learning: “This lovely old school has grown quickly, so we’re delivering a new learning centre … to allow for future growth.” The learning centre is due for completion during Term 2 next year.
in America for almost 10 years, but he wanted to start a family, and he thought Australia was the best place to do that. “The only thing left to experience [in America was] just more. My ego didn’t get to drink as deeply as it wanted to in terms of success and wealth and that. But your ego never gets enough, right? And I knew that.” Finding himself at a crossroads, Parker decided to turn to his inner child for guidance. “He thought it was cool we just went to LA,” Parker says, laughing. Soon after, he returned to Australia. But Australia no longer felt like home and he was, for the first time, without a purpose. Keen to be around people who understood, Parker turned to teaching. Now, four years later, he makes a living as an acting coach and says, “I’ve had the deepest levels of fulfilment and joy doing this.” He wants his students to give themselves permission to be who they are, and explore their love of acting in a safe and supportive environment. “We’re weirdos, we’re actors, we’re creatives,” Parker tells them. “I want you to navigate that, and love it, and keep your inner child intact.” Words: Charlie Shelley. myweeklypreview.com.au

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL PROMOTION
FROM THE MAYOR Hello everyone, I’m extremely proud of the global recognition our Sunshine Coast recently received when we struck double gold at the 2023 International Economic Development Council awards in Dallas, Texas. We took home these two top awards for the funny, quirky and quintessentially Sunshine Coast campaign to attract businesses to the region. The Give Your Business a Boost of Vitamin SC (Sunshine Coast) campaign has attracted 2.7 million views and generated almost 1000 business leads since launching in 2020. Attracting business and investment to our region is a key outcome of the Regional Economic Development Strategy. So, it’s fantastic to see this clever campaign go global. The success of this campaign is also a strong testament to the exceptional content that showcases our region in a typical Sunshine Coast manner: healthy, smart, creative. To see the videos, go to YouTube and type in ‘Vitamin Sunshine Coast’ or visit Sunshine Coast Council’s Our SC website. There are now three series to enjoy.

A
class on a whim, triumph over injury and now a masterful success: meet Glass House Mountains woman Karlee Cobby, who shows it’s never too late to embrace a new passion. Karlee, 35, was looking for a fun way to keep fit when a class at the Caloundra Rollerdrome caught her eye. Eight years and hundreds of hours of training later, Karlee has fallen in love with artistic roller skating (also known as figure skating), mastering her craft at competitions throughout the country. With the help of a Sunshine Coast
Council Individual Development Grant, Karlee recently travelled to Bunbury in Western Australia, winning bronze in Ladies Masters Freedance at the Australian National Artistic Skating Championships. “Artistic skating is a fully self-funded sport, so the Council grant was a big help when paying for flights, accommodation, car hire and competition entry fees,” Karlee says. “I have received a Council grant each year since 2019 to compete at a national level, which is amazing – especially for a mature-age athlete as
most other grants are only for children.” Along with placing third in competitions nationally this year and in 2019, Karlee says her biggest achievement was returning to the sport after an ankle reconstruction. The talented athlete is set to make her second attempt at mastering the fourth level of dance skating assessment and has begun work with her coach on her 2024 freedance routine. Council offers a range of grants and funding programs throughout the year. To find out more, visit the website at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/grants.

Have your say on animal access at popular Point Cartwright Many community members have already taken up the opportunity to provide feedback on local law amendments.
FESTIVAL CELEBRATES SUSTAINABLE SUNSHINE COAST The countdown is on for BiospHERO Day. This is our Sunshine Coast Biosphere’s first community festival offering free and family-friendly fun for everyone – all while celebrating sustainability in our region. The event on November 5 from 10am - 3pm will transform the MET in Maroochydore into a hub of free workshops, kids’ activities, art and crafts, live music, food trucks and much more. BiospHERO Day aims to be plastic-free, with attendees encouraged to bring their reusable cups, water bottles and cutlery, along with a small broken household item or clothing for mending at the Repair Café. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson, who is also the Biosphere Coordinating Committee Chair, says the festival will be the largest celebration of our Biosphere to date. “Coming together, finding new ways to be sustainable and getting involved as a community – this is all what it means to be a part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.” Visit events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘Biosphere’ to see more and register for a free workshop.
northern beach onto and around the rocky foreshore, the dunes along Buddina Beach and sections of Point Cartwright Reserve. These recommendations follow Council’s endorsement of the Point Cartwright Reserve and La Balsa Park Master Plan in August, which establishes new animal management requirements at Point Cartwright Reserve. Sunshine Coast Council Division 4 Councillor Joe Natoli says he appreciates the extensive community feedback which
was received during the prior masterplanning process. “We appreciate many of our community members have contributed feedback during the master-plan process and thank them for taking the time to do so again during this round of engagement” Cr Natoli says. Your views are valuable, which is why it’s important to provide feedback on the proposed amendments to the local laws before October 30 by visiting Council’s Have Your Say website.
ADD YOUR SUPPORT TO HELP LOCAL FIRST NATIONS BUSINESSES THRIVE You’re invited to an evening of cultural entertainment, food and more to help celebrate Indigenous Business Month this October. Head along and show your support to Sunshine Coast First Nations businesses at The MET in Maroochydore on Friday, October 27, from 5pm at the third annual First Nations Supplier Day. Community Portfolio Councillor David Law says Supplier Day aims to support a strong and
resilient community which prioritises local First Nations businesses as the suppliers of choice. “This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with First Nations businesses, with an option to purchase through a market-style evening,” he says. “Whether you’re a business looking to work with First Nations people or you’re just looking for yourself, come along and connect.” For more information, visit the Council’s website.

NO CARAVAN, NO WORRIES My family members don’t mind roughing it a little and are regulars at various campsites across the Sunshine Coast. For us, it’s all about sleeping under the stars and toasting marshmallows over the campfire without a worry in the world. One day, we might transition to a caravan … We’d be joining the party of an estimated 800,000 registered recreational vehicles in Queensland that have created a resurgence in popularity of caravan holidays within a record number of trips taken last year. On the Sunny Coast, we get more than our fair share of the $2.3 billion that caravanners and campers spend each year in Queensland. Our popularity comes down to having so many different places to stay – with more than 30 caravan parks dotted across the region. Some of our caravan parks truly have locations to die for and include the council-operated ones in Cotton Tree, Coolum, Dicky Beach, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Noosa North Shore that
are practically on the beach and you can almost catch a fish from your tent. Many of our privately operated caravan parks have resort-like facilities and are seen as destinations in their own right. Big 4 Caloundra – with its fancy new pool complete with waterslides – is a great example, as is Habitat Noosa, tucked away in the Noosa Everglades and about as close to paradise as you can get. But no caravan, no worries. You can still take a tent or stay in a cabin and enjoy that old-fashioned holiday experience that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so on the Sunshine Coast.

MY OPINION
TAPPING INTO SUSTAINABILITY
NAVIGATING MARRIED LIFE
Jane Stephens recommends we all take stock of our natural water resources and try to avoid draining them needlessly in everyday life.
Ashley Robinson has learnt the hard way that he’ll always be heading in the right direction if he’d only just listen to his wife.
“W
ater, water everywhere and not a drop to drink”, wrote Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his 1834 poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The catastrophic situation Coleridge describes is one our government and stakeholders are busting their boilers to avoid. This month, the Premier announced that a desalinisation plant was to be built to help shore up water security in the next decade, and the multi-billion-dollar water factory would probably be sited here. It makes sense to conjure that kind of alchemy, given the endlessness of our briny sea. And with an extra 200,000 people set to move here in the next 20 years, we are going to need lots of big infrastructure to keep us all happy, fed and watered. This is National Water Week – a time to take stock and give thanks that we can turn on the tap and drinkable water flows. Not all are so lucky, and there are towns where soft drink runs more freely than water because the clear stuff tastes so bad. The Australian Water Association (AWA) says a quarter of all Australians don’t know how water arrives at their taps and 45 per
cent do not think about using it. But think about it we must, with forecasters telling us to brace for a warm, dry spring/summer. Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone – or in short supply. Remember the four-minute showers, with a government-issued timer in every cubicle to count you down, when the state’s southeast corner was in drought in 2009? Being concerned about water use may not have stuck in our daily rhythm, but some drought habits stayed: water-saving shower heads, lower pipe pressure and water tanks. The push has been on for us all to live more sustainably, and water is no exception. So, here are a few AWA facts: • water from the bathroom and laundry gets treated before it enters the waterways, but stormwater from roofs and roads doesn’t • a 10 litre bucket is equivalent to running the tap for two minutes or the shower for one minute • a full dishwasher load uses twice as much (20 litres) • a dripping tap uses 12,000 litres a year. Conscious consumption is key, and appreciation of our good fortune is helpful in living more deliberately.

R
ecently, I wrote about all the fancy bits you get in vehicles these days, compared with when I was kid – a time when we never had a radio in the car until I was about 15. I was reminded by a few people this week that I never mentioned Siri – you know, that sexy voice that tells you about speed limits, red-light cameras and directions to your destination. It made me think that maybe a GPS and Siri are only accessories you need if you are single, because all of us with partners know very well that the person sitting beside us in the car has all these things covered. Take Old Mate, for instance. How I drove around without her telling me what to do is a bloody miracle. For instance, I have learnt road rules from her. I didn’t know you couldn’t change lanes at traffic light intersections. But every time I did it in our first years of marriage, she would read me the riot act. “That’s illegal. If you get fined, I’m not paying it” – which would start robust debate until eventually I complied, just for the serenity. She has a built-in radar and knows precisely when I exceed the speed limit
– prompting more threats of fines, loss of points and “you are on your own” conversations. Of course, if she has made us late for an important date, she switches off that skill. Then there is the indicating, I could be the only car in the middle of the bloody Nullabor Plain and turn in for fuel without indicating and away she would go. I would argue that it didn’t matter as we are the only vehicle in a 500km radius. That would start another robust debate that she eventually would win (you guessed it, for serenity). I now indicate in my driveway, just so she and my dog George know what’s going on. She has directions covered – being very good at telling me where to go and how to get there the best way, as well as saying: “Why did you come this way?”. Finding a park is another skill she has, unless there isn’t any ... and that, of course, is my fault. There are exceptions, though. Occasionally, after giving me directions, we get to a point where she says, “I thought I knew where it was”. Now, I have never heard Siri say that but “hey Siri” is a female, so she is never wrong. Imagine if Siri was a male? We would never get anywhere.

MY OPINION
FINNICK’S TWO MINUTES OF FAME Sami Muirhead could get boiling mad over her children’s specific lunch requests, but she knows the recipe to serving up peace in the family home.
N
oodles are causing me oodles of grief. My Year 3 son has decided he simply has to have noodles for school lunch. Why? Well, he does like the taste of them, but mainly I suspect because Finnick is taking noodles to eat every day. I don’t know Finnick, but he seems to be the guru of the Year 3 kids. We all had a Finnick in our class. So, I said to Augie he could heat the noodles in the morning and take them to school. That was a fail, as the noodles were cold by morning tea. My kid swears the only way to eat the noodles is to take them in a thermos of boiling water. This does not sound legitimate or safe behaviour to me: to have a piping hot drink container floating around your backpack, alongside a copy of Harry Potter. I am already an average Mum, so I do not need a phone call from the school. I pondered it all and wondered how we could get the kid his hot noodles. If only I knew Finnick’s mum. I could phone her and ask her about this hyper focus of mine that is taking up way too much of my time. You see, I have made a rod for my own back by allowing my kids to have their own choice of lunch each day. My daughter loves a salad and a bit of cooked pasta. But it
must be bow-shaped pasta. My middle son only eats strawberries and chicken. He has autism and has issues with textures of food. So, I do not mind going out of my mind if it means he will eat his lunch. And now my baby wants hot noodles every day of the week. Insert loud moan here ... Remember when we all just got Vegemite sandwiches and an orange every day and that seemed simply fine? I am also partial to a packet of noodles. I was a latch-key kid growing up. Mum worked two jobs and Dad had long gone sailing into the sunset. So, my brother, sister and I walked home every afternoon and would eat toast with 2 Minute Noodles on top while we watched Days Of Our Lives. I was invested emotionally in that soap opera despite the fact the ‘Salem Strangler’ storyline gave me nightmares for years. Anyway, my point is that I grew up a happy kid consuming Sunny Boy frozen triangle drinks and 2 Minute Noodles in the ’80s. I am surprised I developed healthily, given that the nutritional value of noodles is equivalent to eating six shoe boxes. If we were feeling extra indulgent we would add cheese and butter to the cooked noodles. Do not tell Finnick that little recipe or the whole of Year 3 will be asking for that.

A berry clever tip
Top tip: Want to feed more people? It’s the egg custard filling that is the mostcrucial part. The right ratio is required to ensure a light and fluffy result. As a general rule, it’s one egg to 1/2 cup milk or cream. So, a four-egg quiche would need two cups of milk, and a six-egg quiche would need three cups of milk.
Spring Vegetable Quiche This recipe is from 4 Ingredients’ The Easiest Air Fryer Keto Book Ever. Visit 4ingredients.com.au.

To prolong the life of your berries, always store them in the refrigerator, and never wash them until they are being eaten or used. For a deeper clean, dip the berries in a bowl of 4:1 mixture of water to white vinegar. After washing, dry the berries on a towel thoroughly. This extra step extends the shelf life of the berries by helping to prevent mould from growing on their surface. Avoid leaving your berries in the vinegar mixture for too long, as it can absorb the vinegar flavour. This tip is sourced from Seasons IGA. dish. Macadamia Nut-Crusted Chicken with Lime Serves: 5 A perfectly easy recipe to celebrate the warmth and produce of the season. This hearty meal comprises tender chicken breasts coated in a nutty mixture of coconut and macadamias, which is made all the more delectable by mustard honey sauce and a hint of lime.
Ingredients • 2 large eggs • 1 cup Nutworks raw macadamias, chopped • ¼ cup flour • 500g chicken breasts or tenders • 1½ tsp paprika • 2 tbs dijon mustard
• ¼ tsp garlic • 5 tbs honey • 1 tbs apple cider vinegar • ½ cup shredded coconut • olive oil • salt and pepper, for seasoning • lime wedges, to serve.
1. Mix shredded coconut, chopped macadamia nuts and a hint of lime juice in a small bowl. Sprinkle contents onto a medium-sized plate. 2. Crack two eggs into another bowl and whisk thoroughly before setting aside. 3. Pound chicken breasts slightly between plastic wrap until they reach 2cm thickness, and season with salt and pepper. 4. Mix garlic, flour and paprika in a separate bowl and also season with salt and pepper. 5. On a stove, pour 2cm of olive oil in a large pan over a medium heat. 6. Dip chicken thoroughly in garlic, flour and paprika mixture. Then dip the chicken into whisked eggs before rolling in the chopped macadamia and shredded coconut mixture until fully coated. 7. Over a medium heat, cook the chicken in a frying pan for a few minutes per side. The coating should be golden coloured and the chicken cooked through. To remove excess oil, put the fried chicken on a plate lined with a paper towel. 8. Serve with lime wedges. 9. For mustard honey sauce – stir honey, dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar and a squeeze of fresh lime juice in a bowl and serve alongside chicken. ECO-INSPIRED, OVER-50S LIVING COMES TO MORETON BAY
A
new eco-inspired over-50s lifestyle resort GemLife Moreton Bay promises to put homeowners in touch with the beauty of nature. Stage 1 of the nearly 150-hectare site – the first over-50s resort of its kind in Australia – is now selling, featuring six spacious and luxurious two-bedroom-plusmultipurpose-room home designs.
GemLife director and CEO Adrian Puljich says the distinctive ecology and sheer scope of the site – of which more than 60 per cent had been set aside for native revegetation and protection of existing koala habitat – allows for a fresh approach and aesthetic to the design of the resort’s homes and facilities. “GemLife Moreton Bay is surrounded by parklands, tree groves, wildlife-rich
wetlands, conservation area trails, seven picturesque lakes, koala-habitat corridors, and swathes of open green space. It really is an extraordinary site,” Adrian says. “Inspired by the unique natural environment, the resort’s home designs create a sense of connection with the surrounding landscape. And because of the unbeatable green space, all homes have no rear neighbours.
“With between 227.36 sqm and 253.7 sqm of living space, the homes are among our biggest to date, optimising indoor-outdoor living to harmonise with the environment.” Stage 1 homes offer five colour scheme and multiple facade options. The generous array of standard inclusions cover stainless-steel appliances, walk-in pantries, walk-in robes in both the master and second bedrooms, and much more. The first stage, which comprises 83 home sites, is conveniently located close to several of the resort’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the lakeside Country Club with a walkway to a private island, Summer House and a network of trails for walking and cycling. “GemLife Moreton Bay invites future residents to embrace a lifestyle that celebrates the harmony between humanity and the environment,” Adrian says. “With its dedication to preserving natural habitats, promoting sustainable design, and fostering a strong sense of community, this remarkable residential resort will offer a unique opportunity to live in harmony with nature.” GemLife Moreton Bay is active over-50s living redefined. BACK UP AND STAY A STEP AHEAD AHEAD OF SCAMMERS Imagine if your wallet was stolen. Sure, it’s frustrating to have to replace your cards, get a new wallet, and you might lose $50. But what about the only copy of that photo of a loved one you’ve carried in there for 30 years? And that one receipt from your first date? A picture that your grandchild has drawn for you? There’s no way of retrieving them. No bank has a copy and there’s no 1800 number to call to get a new one printed. On the computer, photos, typed letters and your digital life record (if you have
written one) are the equivalent of such pieces in your wallet. Scammers know this. They can hold your files hostage if you have somehow granted them physical or remote access to your computer. They will ask for a large sum to release them, and there is no guarantee they will be returned – even if you do pay. There’s not a lot the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission can do. But what if there was a way to alleviate this risk of destruction altogether? Thankfully, some smart cookie
invented the art of backing up. It can save the stress and you can keep files comfortably, knowing that if you get scammed, you have a fresh copy ready to set up again. No red faces here. Back in the day, you’d have a hard drive and you would manually copy your files across to it. This is still a viable option if you’re not quite sure what to do. Simply copy your home file and paste it across to your external drive. Make sure your key files have been copied. Now, most modern computers have the option of an easy backup. Apple Macs have TimeMachine which keeps a constant backup of your computer and can be configured to back up even every hour. Windows computers have File History which takes regular backups of your computer. These take the guesswork out of it and mean that you can roll back your computer to a previous time. It’s a good idea to back up regularly. Personally, I back up daily, but weekly or monthly may suit your needs. Hard drives used to be the best external drive to copy across to. We all know how unreliable they have been, and how long the process takes. Plus, they are bulky. Current technology is Solid State Drives (SSDs). On the surface, they function like a hard drive: they store files. Technically speaking, they are far more
reliable as they don’t have moving components like a hard drive. While SSDs are not 100 per cent reliable, they are significantly better and much more advanced than hard drives. It’s recommended to plug them in at least every six months to keep them working. You might have heard of the Cloud. This scary place is just another word for the internet. Think of it like a secure website that only you have access to – for example, OneDrive, iCloud and DropBox. It is great in theory for personal backups, but if you have access to it on your computer, if under attack, so will your scammer. This means that it is not a viable option for a security backup. Although it can be convenient to keep your external drive always plugged into your computer, this is not recommended, because if under attack, they might be able to take it over as well. Only plug it in when you want to back up, and then unplug. If under attack, unplug it immediately. I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping a regular backup of your files. It is such a small step to take every now and again to save you an immense amount of frustration, anger and sadness in the future. WORDS: Edin Read. THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
HEARING BETTER, LIVING BETTER
Retirement brings on many challenges. Everything changes and that includes your social structures. You will be spending more time with your spouse, and you will probably end up with an expanded social group. Hearing loss can put a real brake on enjoying these newfound opportunities. It is one of those things that, because it doesn’t hurt and doesn’t bleed, is often pushed to the back of the health concerns. Sadly, that means people put off doing something about it, even though its making their lives much harder. Quite often, people also are put off by pushy sales techniques from the multitude of hearing-aid shops that have sprung up everywhere. When you make the decision to do something about your hearing, there are great advantages to finding an independent, Australian-owned hearing clinic. First and foremost, you will not be dealing with a huge multinational company. Secondly, independent means a wider choice. Did you know that some hearing aid shops are owned by the companies that make certain brands of hearing aids – and that’s all you will be offered. The importance of getting a second
opinion cannot be underestimated, and always make sure you get at least a 30-day trial period. Stick to local clinics. You will not be disappointed and your business stays in Australia. Since launching in 2021, Stockland’s Halcyon Nirimba has achieved outstanding market acceptance, selling well ahead of schedule. Only 20 homes remain at the community designed for over-50s. The community’s last release of homes was brought forward and launched to the market in September to meet market demand.
Project director Andrew Astorquia believes the sales success at Halcyon Nirimba is largely due to the community’s prime location and the design philosophy, which drove affordability. “Halcyon Nirimba was Australia’s first land lease community to be deliberately designed within a broader masterplanned community,” he says. “Located in the heart of Stockland
Aura on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, our vision was to create a modern, resort-style community, with the benefits of convenience and connection. “Halcyon Nirimba has been very popular with local buyers looking to stay in the area but downsize from their large family homes and remain connected to their existing community.” Homes at Halcyon Nirimba are

generously sized, thoughtfully appointed and built to flow seamlessly to maximise the Coast’s renowned indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Two of the most-popular home designs in the latest release are the Sorrento and Bronte. “Both home designs feature openplan living with plenty of storage for minimum maintenance and maximum style,” Andrew says. “Priced from $739,000, the Bronte and Sorrento homes are an attractive offering for the modern senior.” As part of Aura’s master-planned community, Halcyon Nirimba provides homeowners with easy connection to the Bells Creek Arterial Road and a network of parks and cycling trails, as well as the future city centre. “The Bells Creek Arterial Road opened in September, providing direct access to the Bruce Highway from Aura – something our current homeowners are very excited about,” Andrew says. “Stage one of the Aura Brook Parklands has also begun construction. The parklands directly adjoin our community and will feature a mixture of green spaces and tree-lined pathways with seating, as well as a fenced, off-leash dog park.” To secure your home at Halcyon Nirimba, speak to the team today by calling 1800 050 050.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY READY TO CHANGE IN-HOME CARE In an Australian-first, leading in-home care provider Silverchain has teamed up with one of the world’s first virtual hospitals in Israel, Sheba Beyond, to offer advanced telemedicine services. The partnership, which was recently cemented as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), is expected to deliver a pioneering new model of home care, which harnesses digital technologies. Its website states Sheba Beyond doctors virtually ‘visit’ their patients to deliver treatment, which the ground-breaking medical provider claims is “real and tangible”. It’s a game-changer for the growing number of ageing Australians embracing home care. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that over the 10 years from 2012, the number of people using home care increased almost four-fold. In June 2022, about 216,000 Australians were using home care. A statement from Sheba’s website says: “Thanks to advanced technology that performs constant monitoring, virtual technology preserves treatment continuity, ensuring that each patient will receive the most appropriate treatment for them – often even before the patient is aware of the need for it.
Thus, we are able not only to treat the condition, but prevent its deterioration. “The innovative technologies provide doctors and patients with the ability to control and supervise, thereby reducing the intensity of the illness/condition and providing the means to alert in the event of deterioration or complications. “This amounts to a vastly improved treatment, while circumventing the need to seek treatment at the health clinic or hospital.” Fuelled by the success of Sheba’s extensive clinical expertise and technological innovation, Silverchain is set to ramp up the calibre of medical in-home care it provides to more than 115,000 Australians each year. Sheba would also benefit from Silverchain’s applied research expertise, which focuses on enhancing the safety and accessibility of in-home care, especially in the areas of mental health, palliative care, cardiology, rehabilitation and acute health care. Silverchain’s chief executive Dale Fisher says it is the first time a Silverchain MoU in Australia has involved Sheba Beyond. “We are inspired to be part of such a high-calibre collaboration,” he says. Sleep apnea: silent threat to health
Consider surgery to replace shoulder
Undiagnosed sleep apnea silently affects many Australians, jeopardising their health and wellbeing. This condition, often linked with obesity, is increasingly prevalent. Recent research highlights that nearly half of men aged 40-69 may suffer from sleep apnea. The symptoms, such as constant fatigue and loud snoring, often go unnoticed until a partner intervenes. CPAP Direct and Sleep Testing Australia offer a solution, starting with an affordable in-home sleep test to assess the issue’s severity. This leads to a holistic and accessible journey toward better sleep through CPAP therapy. Australian cricket legend Merv Hughes, who experienced severe obstructive sleep apnea for 25 years, found relief through CPAP therapy. He now serves as CPAP Direct’s brand ambassador, praising its knowledgeable and supportive staff. Whether you’re an existing CPAP user or seeking guidance, you can take the first step toward better sleep at the Maroochydore store, online at cpap.com.au or by emailing support@ cpap.com.au. Take action to prioritise your sleep for a healthier, more energised life.
Shoulder pain and limited mobility can be challenging, impacting our daily activities and overall wellbeing. When conservative treatments fail to provide relief, shoulder replacement surgery, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, becomes a viable option. The primary indications include: • osteoarthritis: this degenerative joint disease results in the breakdown of cartilage, causing pain and stiffness • rheumatoid arthritis: an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation and joint damage, leading to shoulder deterioration • post-traumatic arthritis: that occurs after severe shoulder injuries or fractures, leading to long-term joint degeneration • avascular necrosis: where reduced blood flow to the shoulder joint causes bone death and joint degeneration • severe fractures: that cannot be effectively treated with conservative methods • rotator cuff tears: in advanced cases where repair alone cannot restore function • failed previous surgeries: where procedures provided unsatisfactory results. Consult an experienced Orthopaedic surgeon to determine the most suitable treatment plan based on individual circumstances and health.

At SunLife, we are passionate about sun protection. Educating our patients to stay sun-safe is a key part of the skin check appointment. Sunscreen is a common topic. Thankfully, most people with fair-toolive skin now use factor 30 to 50 when going out for longer periods. But what about normal days when we’re only out for short periods? Evidence shows that applying sunscreen to exposed skin every morning when the UV index is over 3 significantly reduces pre-cancerous actinic keratoses (scaly red or brown sun spots). If you don’t know, that’s every day of the year in Queensland. So, what’s the best sunscreen to use? The best sunscreen is the one that you and your skin get on with and is factor 30 or more. The range of sunscreens available has improved recently. There are more dry touch, moisturising and organic options to try. Remember to protect your skin, get new or changing spots checked as soon as possible and get a thorough skin check when you are due.
Glaucoma can be a life-altering diagnosis. But Glaucoma Australia’s SiGHTWiSE Program is dedicated to arming patients with the tools and knowledge needed to confront this challenge confidently. The SiGHTWiSE Program offers invaluable support to help patients manage the anxiety and uncertainty that often accompanies a glaucoma diagnosis. Qualified orthoptist educators and health counsellors provide one-on-one emotional and practical assistance. This ongoing support extends beyond the diagnosis, addressing the evolving challenges that glaucoma patients face. One remarkable aspect of the SiGHTWiSE Program is that 91 per cent of patients in the program consistently attend their recommended appointments. This ensures they receive continuous, appropriate care – a critical factor in glaucoma-management success. With about 2700 new patients joining the program each year, SiGHTWiSE plays a pivotal role in helping eye health professionals extend their care beyond the consultation room. A recent survey revealed that 84 per cent of program participants adhere to their prescribed treatments, further demonstrating its effectiveness in managing glaucoma. Get ready to mark your calendars for an event that promises to shed light on spine health. On November 10, at the Maroochydore RSL, Back on Track: Navigating Spine Health, Debunking Myths and Conquering Osteoarthritis will be presented by Dr Stephen Byrne, a specialist neurosurgeon based on the Sunshine Coast. This free event is for those with spine-related issues and osteoarthritis. Dr Byrne, an expert in neurosurgery, will lead the discussions, sharing his extensive knowledge on spine health and common conditions of the spine, and shedding light on misconceptions about spinal surgery. He will also explore various treatments available, both surgical and non-surgical, to address spine-related concerns and osteoarthritis. Participants can expect informative talks and the chance to ask questions directly to Dr Byrne. Gain a comprehensive understanding of spine health and cutting-edge treatments for osteoarthritis. This will be a two-hour session. A light lunch will be provided. To secure your spot at this free event, RSVP by Friday, October 27. You can RSVP by emailing info@ scneuro.com.au or calling 5437 7256.
The fear of missing out on a deal and concerns about ‘timing’ the market may result in a seller rushing to sign a contract without considering the consequences. The right of a buyer to change their mind and terminate a contract under the cooling off period does not extend to a seller. Other conditions – for example, making a contract subject to a satisfactory building and pest inspection, finance or due diligence inquiries – are usually only for the buyer’s benefit. Once both parties have signed a contract, it is considered a ‘done deal’, binding on the parties. In Queensland, the ‘standard’ terms of a contract generally only permit a seller to terminate a contract if a buyer fails to comply with a critical condition under the contact. To ensure that you do not find yourself trapped in an unfavourable deal, it is sensible to obtain legal advice prior to signing a contract. Special conditions can be included in the contract – for example, allowing you rights of termination if you receive a better offer. If you are thinking of selling your property, seek professional legal advice in advance. This simple step may save you from a dose of seller’s remorse.

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)
Finances, joint ventures, secret deals and trust issues are on the table this week. Saturday night’s lunar eclipse highlights hiccups involving self-esteem and/or financial management. Strive to be less impulsive and extravagant, and more cautious with cash.
This week the lunar eclipse (in your sign) emphasizes your practical side. Do your best to handle situations in a suitably sensible and pragmatic fashion. When it comes to a romance, work partnership or joint venture, avoid getting stuck in a boring rut.
With the help of the lunar eclipse, use the power of your imagination and trusty intuition to get to the bottom of a problem that’s been bothering you. If you listen to your inner voice (and pay attention to the symbolism in your dreams) it will point you in the right direction.
The silvery, ever-changeable moon is your power planet, and sensitive crabs feel emotionally volatile and vulnerable around the time of the full moon. Saturday night’s lunar eclipse is in earthy Taurus, so you’ll probably feel more grounded.
LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)
VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)
LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)
SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)
It’s one of the most productive weeks of the year as Saturn (planet of discipline and patience) links up with the sun (your power planet). Relationships with family members should improve, as long as you take a cautious and responsible approach.
The sun, Mercury and Mars encourage communication, Virgo, as you expand your influence (especially via social media). Being confident is paramount, as you go after what you want with plenty of creative passion. Venus suggests an increase in cashflow.
Stylish Librans appreciate quality and luxury, but don’t overdo it or you’ll end up being the most beautiful bankrupt on the block. This week Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and the lunar eclipse stir up your money and self-esteem zones. Get your finances in order.
If you stir up grievances with an old adversary, you could find you’ve bitten off more than you can comfortably chew. When it comes to a frustrating problem, avoid quick fixes. You’ll find a solution if you act on your hunches and look for the facts.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)
CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)
AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)
PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)
This week’s lunar eclipse highlights your health, daily routine and work zones. But expect some surprising developments and stressful moments along the way. Resist the urge to be argumentative and super self-indulgent.
The best days of the week are Monday and Tuesday, when Saturn (your power planet) makes positive links to Mercury and the sun. Focused thinking, goal setting and creative plans will take you far. So it’s a good weekend to focus on friendships.
This week the sun transits into your career zone (where it joins Mercury and Mars) and the lunar eclipse lights up your family zone (where it joins Jupiter and Uranus). So try to get the balance right between professional progress and domestic peace.
Monday and Tuesday are positive days to plan a new course of study or book an adventurous holiday. However, hidden tensions could bubble to the surface with a relative, neighbour or work colleague on the weekend. Be extra diplomatic.

THE SUBURB WITH MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK It may not be home buyers’ first choice, but Sippy Downs has plenty going for it in location, facilities and price. WORDS: Steele Taylor.
A
growing suburb that boasts location, infrastructure and services is attracting a host of home buyers with its more affordable prices. Sippy Downs is 12 minutes from Mooloolaba Beach and includes the University of the Sunshine Coast, shopping precincts, jobs hubs, restaurants, schools, parklands, sports facilities and a proposed hospital. About 120 houses and 75 units have been sold there during the past 12 months, despite a general slowing of property in the greater region since the highs experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Stack & Co Property Consultants agent Jack Ryan says more than 50 groups recently attended an open house inspection for a four-bedroom home with a pool on 700sqm. Eight offers were submitted, including three sight-unseen. “The property hit the market strongly and inquiries were non-stop. My phone was blowing up,” he says. The home at 74 Fitzwilliam Drive was ultimately purchased for $1,285,000: the suburb’s highest sale price this year. My Ryan says the buyer initially looked
74 Fitzwilliam Drive in other suburbs nearby before they were told about the home at Sippy Downs and watched a video of it. And that appears to be a common theme: people opting for homes at Sippy Downs after scouring more noted neighbouring suburbs. “Sippy Downs is not the first place they look at when they look at the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “People know Mountain Creek and Buderim, which are nearby, so their search starts there, but then they come to understand the surroundings and what Sippy Downs has to offer. They realise it’s
not too far away, and a property in Mountain Creek or Buderim would probably be $100,000 to $200,000 more. They do their research and come and look at Sippy Downs, where they can buy a home for less and can get more for their money.” Mr Ryan says Sippy Downs has almost everything to accommodate buyers: “There is the university, Coles, (recently opened) Junk, parklands and it’s only a 12-minute drive to the beach and you can easily get on to the highway to Noosa and Brisbane.” He expects the suburb to keep growing: “There is more land here and more units

and apartments. I believe there will be more shops, too. The area is attractive to a lot of people: retirees, young couples, university students – all demographics.” The neighbouring development at Palmview has also led to home sales in Sippy Downs. “People look at Harmony but then see older properties on bigger blocks in Sippy Downs,” he says. Mr Ryan says homes are moving quickly in the suburb: “Pretty much all of the properties we list are under contract within three to four weeks.” The affordability factor has become more pronounced. About 17 $1m-plus homes were sold in the suburb last year, compared to about “six or seven” this year. Realestate.com.au reports that the median house price at Sippy Downs is $775,000: down three per cent in the past 12 months, but up from about $500,000 in late 2018. The price is significantly lower than that of Buderim ($1.1m in the past 12 months) and Mountain Creek ($930,000). Want more news daily?
