n the digital age, the rise of social media has revolutionised they way we connect, share and consume information. But while these platforms have brought some great benefits, unfortunately they have also become a breeding ground for comparison and unrealistic standards of beauty. Our youth are particularly influenced by social media when it comes to body image, and the constant exposure to seemingly flawless individuals can create an unattainable ideal, leading to diminished self-esteem, anxiety and depression. This week, we take a closer look at how some of the most popular platforms may be having more negative effects than parents even realise. Also in this issue, our special feature celebrates the significant contribution the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network has made to women in business on the Sunshine Coast as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. AGENDA
FREE FLU JABS TO REMEDY QUEENSLAND ‘VACCINE FATIGUE’ But Queensland’s chief health officer confirms the numbers of COVID-19 patients in hospitals is rising again.
F
lu jabs will be free for all Queenslanders next year as the state looks to remedy ‘vaccine fatigue’. People have also been urged to get their COVID-19 booster shot, with the number of Queenslanders hospitalised with the virus more than doubling recently. Health Minister Shannon Fentiman has announced that the state government will commit $40 million to fund free flu jabs from 2024, saying she was concerned about low vaccination numbers. Queenslanders over the age of six
months will be able to get the free shot from the start of the flu season in March 2024. It extends the state’s free programs of the past two years, in which more than 900,000 people took advantage. Numbers significantly dropped in 2023, however, with just a third of Queenslanders being vaccinated. The state recently held its first vaccine summit to discuss ways to boost numbers. “With cost of living a concern for so many families right now, making the flu vaccine free is absolutely critical to boosting those vaccination rates,”
Ms Fentiman said. Misinformation may also be contributing to low rates, the health minister said. “I absolutely do believe that coming out of COVID, we are seeing increased vaccine hesitancy and vaccine fatigue,” she said. “At our vaccine summit, we talked a lot about how we can do more to combat misinformation on social media and get the message out there that vaccinations are safe and they are needed to continue to protect families and the community. “In a post-COVID world, we are seeing more misinformation. We are seeing more vaccine hesitancy.” Queensland’s chief health officer John Gerrard also wanted people to be mindful of COVID-19 booster shots, with another wave of the virus hitting the state. The number of people in Queensland hospitals with COVID-19 is currently 207 after holding steady for months around 75. It is much less than the last major wave that hit the state in 2022, peaking at 1000 patients. “The number is not big yet but the numbers are climbing steadily,” Dr Gerrard said. “This seems to be happening around the country – not just Queensland.” He expected the latest wave to be over by Christmas. Dr Gerrard said the majority of current COVID-19 patients were over the age of 65 and had not had a booster shot in the last calendar year. “If you are over the age of 65 now and have not had a booster this year, you should think about getting one,” he said. “It is particularly important if you are over the age of 75.”
STAFFING BOOST TO IMPROVE FRONTLINE SERVICE Millions of Australians who use Centrelink and Medicare could have shorter call wait times and better customer service after a staffing boost. The federal government will hire 3000 new recruits to Services Australia’s frontline as part of their efforts to implement recommendations from the Robodebt Royal Commission. Government Services Minister Bill Shorten says the extra staff will help return humans to Centrelink and Medicare and prevent schemes like Robodebt from ever occurring again. The Robodebt royal commission final report in July recommended the government facilitate “easy and efficient engagement options of online, in person and telephone communication which is sensitive to the particular circumstances of the customer cohort”. Prior to this $228 million recruitment blitz, Services Australia had fewer public servants per capita than at any other time after the former government reduced the number of staff by 3800. The new recruits will be deployed to centres in capital cities and regional centres. More than 800 people have already begun their training.

Skin breathers
Christian Louboutin’s much-coveted red soles were inspired by Andy Warhol. The ’60s pop artist’s drawing, Flowers, caught the eye of the famous designer, which gave him the idea to add the infamous sole to his designs.
By the numbers You might think that it’s just fish that have gills, but there are several species of sea snake that breathe through their skin as well. For example, the Hydrophis cyanocinctus has been found to breathe through the top of its own head. It has a small hole and collection of blood vessels at the top of its head for picking up oxygen from the seawater and sending it to the reptile’s brain while it moves underwater.
Quote of the week
The scientific technology behind cathode-ray tube televisions dates back to 1869. But it wasn’t until the mid-1920s that the technology was put into television sets. These chunky TVs became the mainstay of viewing for decades, until technological advances and the release of LCD and plasma flat-screen televisions made CRT sets obsolete about 2007. Gone are the days of degaussing (demagnetising to relieve visual distortion and colour problems), bashing the side of a set to get it to work properly or getting up to change the channel.

1967 – Rolling Stone makes its debut. The bi-weekly popular culture magazine was founded by Jann Simon Wenner in San Francisco. The magazine launched the careers of many famous authors and published the early versions of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. 1985 – Twenty-two-year-old Russian Gary Kasparov wins the 13th World Chess Championship against Anatoly Karpov to become the youngest ever World Chess Champion. 2009 – The 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. On this day, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the last Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev and Polish ex-president and Noble Prize winner Lech Walesa walked through Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to commemorate the important date.

SCROLLING THROUGH ADOLESCENCE: SOCIAL MEDIA’S IMPACT ON MENTAL HEALTH The algorithms that the most-popular app platforms use may be having more sinister effects than parents realise. WORDS: Katie Robke.
A
soft blue glow emanates onto the face of a 14-year-old, as they clutch their phone tightly. It’s 2am, and the world outside their window is silent, but what’s in their grasp is anything but: a bustling list of glossy filters and curated posts, triggering a complex pattern of neurological responses that are closely linked to a range of acute and prolonged mental illness issues. The digital revolution has undoubtedly shaped the identity of Gen A and Gen Z (those born from 1996 onward), with the first social media site Six Degrees introduced in early May 1997. Instant access to online media is just a part of life for them. Australian Psychological Society statistics show that 88 per cent of adolescents use social media more than once a day, with some spending up to eight hours immersed in the world of their favourite apps YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram. But with the world quite literally at their fingertips, so, too, is a myriad of

“A number of social media applications are deliberately designed to invoke addictive processes in the brain” Rachael Sharman comparison, pressure, anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep deprivation and, in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts – a frightening reality for young minds that are still in the process of
crucial development. A recent youth mental health survey by headspace revealed 57 per cent of teens felt their mental health was deteriorating, with 42 per cent of them attributing this decline to their social media usage. During adolescence, lack of maturity can render a teenager more susceptible to harmful peer pressures, or to inadvertently engage in online bullying behaviour causing significant real-world harm. Alternatively, teenagers may find themselves subjected to negative online attention, leading to embarrassment and a reluctance to discuss their experiences with those close to them. This can contribute to serious mental health issues. University of the Sunshine Coast psychology senior lecturer Rachael Sharman says it’s not just the harmful online engagement that raises serious concern. “Social media, in contrast to the term, appears to diminish social skill development, particularly in terms of learning emotion recognition, body
language and a suite of sophisticated abilities such as lie detection, socially appropriate responses in challenging situations, romantic pursuits and more,” Dr Sharman says. The repercussions are tangible, as adolescents who experience loneliness in offline settings turn to social media as a substitute for their underdeveloped social skills. myweeklypreview.com.au

FEATURE STORY And over time, they find themselves experiencing even greater feelings of isolation. Regular social media use triggers the brain to release the chemical dopamine, generating feelings of pleasure and reward. Similarly, a ‘like’, comment or ‘share’ activates oxytocin: the ‘feel-good’ chemical, fostering the desire for more. While this may sound harmless, Dr Sharman says this rush of neurochemicals can escalate usage and reinforce compulsive online behaviours. “A number of social media applications are deliberately designed to invoke addictive processes in the brain,” she says. “Very similar to gambling, they use ‘intermittent reinforcement schedules’ to hook users into checking their phones obsessively in the hope of finding ‘valuable’ information or connections. “Signs of an unhealthy obsession or addiction in adolescents can look like constant phone checking, inability to separate from their phone in the morning and at night, tantrums if their phone is removed, and being unable to communicate with others without their phone on them.” Sue Harrison, a Sunshine Coast high school teacher’s aide and mother to three Gen Z girls, says she felt helpless when her teenagers began using social media. “It didn’t seem to matter what rules we had in place as their parents, it felt like they [their daughters] would always find a way to be online,” she says. “They needed to have certain apps to connect regularly with sporting teams, and we thought we were doing the right thing allowing them to be independent and stay ‘in the loop’.” Mrs Harrison recalls the devastating moment she sat with her 17-year-old in a psychologist’s office to get her help for her eating disorder, when it became clear what was fuelling much of her daughter’s unhealthy obsession with body image. “The psychologist asked my daughter
BY THE NUMBERS Experts from the eating disorder sector have called for tighter regulation of social media apps at the Body Image and Social Media roundtable in Parliament House, Canberra, recently. The event brought together key members in the eating disorderprevention field, young people with lived experience, social media representatives, researchers and academics, the eSafety Commission and parliamentarians to develop solutions to better protect young people in online environments.
to show her what her Instagram ‘feed’ looked like – I guess to see if who she was following on there was influencing her in a negative way,” she says. “When she showed us, my heart broke for her. “Post after post was diet advice, weight loss recipes, extremely thin bodies, heavy filters and, to be honest, a lot of completely unrealistic beauty standards.” Mrs Harrison says she also witnesses social media addiction play out every day beyond the walls of her own home, in the high school where she teaches. “I have 13-year-olds falling asleep at their desk, students with their phones out during class distracting their friends, and others taking more frequent and extended bathroom breaks than necessary,” she says. “What’s even more challenging is that many parents encourage their children to have their phones on them. “There’s definitely a lot of enabling on parents’ behalf.” The Queensland Government
recently announced that as of Term 1, 2024, a blanket ban will be implemented in all Queensland state schools on phones and wearable technologies during school hours. The move is designed to reduce distractions in classrooms, improve the learning and engagement of students and help combat cyberbullying. “This is a great initiative from the government, especially for schools like mine who don’t yet have a strict mobile phone policy in place,” Mrs Harrison says. But with schools only responsible for students six hours a day, Dr Sharman says there are important conversations that need to be had within families. “This really is about setting limits and boundaries with teenagers and opening up space for in-real-life discussions, for example during dinner times,” she says. “I would also suggest parents delay social media use for as long as possible with their children and use that time to help them build real friendships and relationships away from any kind of
Research presented to the roundtable by the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences found that if you are currently diagnosed with an eating disorder, it is:
• 4137 per cent more likely that the next video delivered to you by the TikTok algorithm will be eating disorder related • 322 per cent more likely that the next video delivered to you by the TikTok algorithm will be diet orientated. The Butterfly Organisation’s recent Body Kind Youth Survey of young people aged 12-18 also found that: • social media made 50 per cent feel dissatisfied with their bodies. • 2 per cent compared their bodies to influencers on social media. More than 70 per cent thought media and social media platforms needed to do more to help young people have a positive body image.

IN THE DARK ON UPGRADES The Department of Transport and Main Roads remains tight-lipped on plans for the Beerwah-Nambour rail service. WORDS: Steele Taylor.
T
ransport officials can’t say what the future holds for a section of the North Coast Line, despite telling a community group it must move from its base near railway tracks. Works are well underway to duplicate the 13-kilometre stretch between Beerburrum and Beerwah, as part of the $550.8 million Stage 1 Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) Rail Upgrade. But the Department of Transport and
Main Roads (TMR) could not confirm plans for the 28-kilometre section from Beerwah to Nambour. That’s despite informing members of the Nambour Men’s Shed that they must vacate the premises they rent on government-owned land. The group was told it had just over a year to relocate, before it was offered a five-year extension. A TMR spokesperson could not say what would happen to the line between Beerwah and Nambour, including
whether it could be doubled. “Future stages of B2N will be confirmed as part of a $6.25 million duplication study currently underway,” the spokesperson says. “This study will review the demand on the line between Beerburrum and Nambour (beyond Stage 1), refining the scope of B2N Stage 2. “This study is intended to be undertaken in parallel with the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line (a proposed coastal rail line from Beerwah to Maroochydore) planning, to ensure that network-wide operations and demand profiles in the Sunshine Coast region are being considered in a staged and logical way.” A $1.5m Brisbane to Sunshine Coast Rail Study, also funded by state and federal governments, is underway as well. The spokesperson says that study will develop a staged program of rail priorities on the North Coast Line to 2051, which will inform the B2N study. There are about 20 passenger train services from Nambour to Brisbane and 20 services from Brisbane to Nambour on weekdays, and about half as many on weekends. The services can accommodate about 9000 seated passengers, in each direction, per day. There is a travel time of about
1hr 48min from Nambour to Brisbane, but some services take longer to allow trains to pass each other at stations that have two platforms or via loops. Local public transport advocate Robert Dow from RAIL – Back on Track says significant changes are required to rail services and infrastructure between Beerwah and Nambour. “The fundamental problem is the poor train service frequency, particularly out of peak,” he says. “Ninety minutes between services is far too long. It needs have a service to and from Nambour every hour. “Peak services need improvement in the late peaks as well, with a minimum of 30 minutes between services. “Improved passing loops are also needed between Beerwah and Nambour.” The TMR spokesperson says the B2N project will make a significant difference to commuters. “Once complete, the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade will provide additional track capacity and reliability, creating travel time savings and increased passenger and freight services to the growing Sunshine Coast region,” they say. GOOD TASTE IN TOURISM A new campaign brings Sunshine Coast producers, beverages and culinary delights to the table for residents and visitors alike.
A
n innovative campaign is set to tap into the $11.2 billion agritourism market, harnessing the magnitude of producers and culinary experiences waiting to be devoured across the Sunshine Coast. It capitalises on two of the Sunshine Coast’s most important industries – tourism and agriculture – to forge a new identity for food, drink and agritourism in
the region. Known as Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry, it will create a brand that encompasses everything agritourism has to offer across the region. Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) CEO Matt Stoeckel says the Queensland Sunshine Pantry brand provides a platform to bring to life the region’s distinct commitment to innovation, sustainability and ethos of keeping it local.
“With our rich volcanic soils and thriving coastline, we have an abundance of fresh local produce crafted by our producers that are dedicated to innovation and sustainability,” he says. “When you look around our landscape, tourism and agriculture just go together. Our research tells us that people really do travel with their stomachs and are motivated by where to go based on what their tastebuds are telling them. “After all, there is no better way to get to know a destination than through experiencing its food and drink. “With more than 900 producers across the Sunshine Coast, it was time to shine a light on the region’s food, drink and agritourism and highlight what’s so special about our offering.” VSC and Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) joined forces to officially open the doors to the new food, drink and agritourism brand on November 8. It’s not the region’s first foray into food-related tourism, having had success with the Craft Beer Capital of Australia campaign. But after celebrating the region’s pedigree in distinctive brews, VSC thought it was time to bring food to the table. FAN has more than 370 members stretching from Gympie to Moreton Bay – from dairy farmers and macadamia
growers through to suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and food service operators. “The Sunshine Coast is home to a truly diverse range of makers, growers, producers, distillers, brewers and supporters and they are all passionate about their produce, products and region,” FAN CEO Nicole McNaughton says. “The campaign aims to raise the profile of the region’s food, drink and agritourism – connecting our visitors and locals with these experiences across the destination. “The campaign will also create a host of new opportunities for the regions producers and makers who are looking to diversify into agritourism as a stream of income.” The quality of the Sunshine Coast’s produce has always been an economic driver for the region, and the link with tourism was established more than 50 years ago, with the Big Pineapple providing a nostalgic memory for millions of travellers visiting, or passing through, the region over the decades. There are now many ways for visitors to experience the region’s food and drink. And with growing demand for agritourism, VSC expects to see a lot more in the future.

PILATES CHANGED CLAIRE’S LIFE FOR THE BETTER A stressful, high-profile job in London was the catalyst for Noosa woman’s wellness journey. WORDS: Katie Robke.

poured herself into for almost seven years. Ms Toone, 39, hasn’t always called Noosa home – and she admits that Pilates wasn’t her first love. She grew up in Badger Head, a small rural seaside community in northern Tasmania, and after school she studied fashion business at Sydney’s FBI Fashion

College. Soon after, she was off to London to work for one of the most-respected fashion houses in the world, Christian Dior. “It was such a full-on, stressful job and lifestyle as a whole that I started to get sick all the time, which ironically led me to take a Pilates class locally,” she says. “I was so drawn to Pilates instantly and wondered if teaching it was something that I could pursue. “I decided to study for my Pilates instructor certification on the weekends, while working at Dior through the week.” When Ms Toone completed her training and found the confidence to leave her high-profile job at Dior, she rented a quaint hall in London and handed out flyers offering Pilates classes. “It’s amazing what you can achieve when you have given yourself no other option,” she says. “I left Dior with no savings and no set plans for my future. “Thankfully it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.” Ms Toone soon caught the attention of a high-end private client whom she travelled alongside worldwide, eventually settling in New York where she spent several years teaching at worldrenowned studios New York Pilates and Karen Lord Pilates. New York holds international acclaim
as the birthplace of Pilates after Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara opened their first ‘body conditioning gym’ there in 1926. They taught the techniques and philosophy to their apprentices with a focus on resistance and the breath. Inspired by the thriving wellness culture in New York, Ms Toone says it completely changed her own views on health and wellbeing. “Being in that environment every day helped shape my views of the kind of space I wanted to create for my own studio one day,” she says. Ms Toone then fell pregnant with her son Jack, and she and her then husband decided to leave the concrete jungle and return to the slower pace of Australia to raise him. Now with thriving studios at Noosaville and Sunshine Beach, Ms Toone has curated a team of 17 instructors and specialists, spanning Pilates, barre, yoga, osteo, remedial massage and reiki. “We have men and women from 18 to 80 years old – some who have been with me since I opened the doors almost seven years ago. “I’m incredibly proud of this wellness community, and the inclusive environment we’ve created.” Katie Robke is a student at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Cr Rick Baberowski Division 1
Thank you A sincere thank you to the crews, volunteers and multiple support services involved in responding to the recent fires. I am constantly impressed at the remarkable and selfless efforts of everyone involved, protecting our community and looking after one another. Do consider volunteering. There cannot be many better ways of contributing and feeling deeply connected to the community. Visit Volunteering Sunshine Coast for more information.
Celebrating our community We have much to celebrate in our communities and I’m a proud member of mine. We’ve enjoyed some great times recently, including the Sunshine Coast’s 24th Festuri Multicultural Festival – a celebration of our cultural diversity. So many people came together for a fun-filled day at the Beerwah Sportsground to embrace the sights and sounds, and enjoy a very special experience. We all came together last weekend for
the Beerwah Heart Community Day where we showcased our local groups and businesses with a jam-packed program of events for the whole family. It celebrated how much we have on offer in Beerwah. I’m excited at how many opportunities our community has to contribute and be involved.
Have your say on transport The Department of Transport and Main Roads is planning for several major road, rail and public transport projects across the Sunshine Coast. This is so important for all our futures, so please have your say on these critical transport projects. This is our opportunity to get involved in shaping the travel time and travel options in our region. Give your feedback online at yoursay-projects.tmr. qld.gov.au/sunshine-coast-major-projects.
Visit the Landsborough Museum Fancy a day trip? I invite you to visit the Landsborough Museum for free. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am – 3pm. Each month, you’ll find an exciting and varied range of monthly events, workshops and kids’ activities. LONG-TIME LOCAL TAKES THE REINS AT KAWANA CHAMBER Kawana Chamber of Commerce welcomed a new president at its annual general meeting recently. Long-time local Alister Eiseman is no stranger to the region, having played an active role in the business and local community over many years. Mr Eiseman is excited to take on the role after the four-year reign of Hamish Procter, Special Counsel at Aitken Legal. “The Kawana Chamber is a special chamber because of the people that come together with no other intent than to support, help and grow the Kawana region and each other’s businesses”, Mr Procter says. “It has been my absolute pleasure to guide and lead this chamber with key highlights being our new major partnership with Comlink Australia, finding a physical home at Vitality Village, our annual Grenfell Murray Christmas in July and the increased collaboration with other chambers on the Sunshine Coast.” As incoming president Mr Eiseman has been a committee member with Kawana for the past 12 months and steps into the role with fresh perspective and a renewed energy.
Alister Eiseman Mr Eiseman is joined by a committee of nine, including vice-president Daniel Albert, treasurer Jacqueline Eedgeman, secretary Samuel Stolberg and general members Cassy Small, Kate Ogg, Mark Paddenburg, Steph Richardson and Michelle Evans.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF THE SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESS WOMEN’S NETWORK Take a deep dive into the past, present and future of a diverse group that has become part of the intrinsic fabric of Coast life and leadership.
T
his year, the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network recognises 25 years of empowering, connecting and celebrating women in business as an incorporated, not-for-profit organisation. To mark the occasion, the network is sharing insights into its history and hopes for the future. From humble beginnings as Women in the Workforce that began around a kitchen table in 1992, the 300-plus strong group of women now known as the Sunshine Coast
Business Women’s Network (SCBWN) was officially incorporated in 1998 and continues to celebrate and empower women in business across our region and beyond. Bebe Mawer was at the helm of Women in the Workforce from its inception up until 1994, before Jan Revill took over in 1994, with Leanne Cannon taking the reins from 1995 until 1996. When Celena Ross joined Women in the Workforce in 1992, she enjoyed attending lunches and connecting with other small

Ms Ross sparked a new wave of progression, including the incorporation of the group and the change of name, which saw the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network officially born. “I’m proud of the foundations I worked hard to create over the two years before turning it into the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network by increasing membership, publicity and buy-in from all

SCBWN CELEBRATING 25 YEARS
As president from 2018 to 2021, Roz White enhanced the network’s partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast, leading to a collaboration that resulted in the development of MBA pathway programs. In addition, Ms White also strengthened the structure of the leadership team, committee portfolio and reporting structures to optimise efficiency and streamline operations. Ms White provided a strength to her presidency that continued the leadership position SCBWN has taken within the wider business community. Twenty-five years, 11 presidents and many committee members since it began, the SCBWN has earned its place as a Sunshine Coast stalwart, deeply entrenched in the fabric of the community. Current SCBWN president Min Swan has centred her term around nurturing a supportive environment for women at every point in their journey. Her primary commitment lies in advancing inclusivity and collaboration to ensure comprehensive support for women in various stages of their business or career endeavours. Staying true to empowering and celebrating women, Ms Swan is focused on encouraging all genders to work together to close the divide, as well as inspiring more
SCBWN grew significantly and also began supporting the University of the Sunshine Coast students through an annual bursary that continues to this day. Then, 2008 saw Sue Willis become president and her dynamic leadership left a lasting legacy of empowerment and community among Sunshine Coast business women. At the time, Ms Willis led a local print media publication and continued to raise the profile of the network. Michalle Faulkner was announced president in 2012, and during her tenure, she oversaw the thriving expansion of the mentoring program. Additionally, a collaborative leadership initiative was launched in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Council and the SCBWN. As president in 2015, Vickie Magic introduced a fresh, creative approach to the network. Her emphasis was on encouraging, enticing and exciting female business women on the Sunshine Coast with a supportive environment where they could uplift and inspire one another, steering away from the trap of comparison. Ms Magic took a hands-on approach to her presidency and would actively hit the streets to support and grow the network.

women to get involved in regional issues of all origins. She now proudly leads the network through this milestone year, recognising and paying respect to those who have previously held her role, valuing their unique qualities and their significant contributions to the Network. “The strength of SCBWN is a testament to the power of community and the importance of supporting and uplifting one another,” Ms Swan says. “The past 25 years could not have been possible without our dedicated group of volunteers who have made up our executive committee over the years, and the amazing members who volunteer their time in support of the network. “The success of the network is attributed to the vision and dedication of our past presidents and their respective committees. “Each leader has brought a unique perspective and skill set to the role, shaping the direction of the group and building on the work of those who came before them. “Through their leadership, these phenomenal women have helped to establish our mission, values and culture, and have fostered an environment where women can celebrate, connect, learn and grow.”

SHARED RECOLLECTIONS As part of the 25-year celebrations, the SCBWN has connected with each of the past presidents and shared their recollections and insights in a series of blogs to recognise and celebrate the work that has gone into the long-term sustainability of the network and the legacy that has been created. Read the full blogs at scbwn.org.au
BEBE MAWER What are your fondest memories of Women in the Workforce? Definitely at the beginning, when I was sitting around Marilyn Manning’s kitchen table with a bottle of red while we were working out how to plan a business women’s networking club and what our goals were. We had a couple of local speakers to kick it off. And I have to say, having six people at that first meeting, we thought, ‘Wow. We got six different women’. It was quite a big deal … We got a couple of big speakers, one after the other, then it grew from about 10 to 70 members.
CELENA ROSS What is one of your proudest moments during your time with the SCBWN? One of the things that I’m really proud of is establishing the strategic structure. Another is changing the name of the network, as I knew for the group to flourish and be seen as professional, it needed a strong structure and a professional title so government and large corporate business would take note, include us in regional planning sessions, and turn to us for feedback with development of policies and events.
MICHELLE HAMER OAM What legacy are you proud to have left the SCBWN? My legacy is not about things we achieved while I was president, it’s about the SCBWN Awards and celebrating the success of women. The Awards to me are what I hope people associate me most with … and while the Network is celebrating its 25th-year anniversary, I am celebrating 14 years as the chair of the Awards.
Cоgratulatiоs On behalf of Sunshine Coast News, we congratulate the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network on their 25-year celebration. The network is paving the way for future generations and shows that passion, dedication and hard work can lead to extraordinary success. It is a thrill to celebrate this remarkable milestone and celebrate women in business in our region.

SCBWN CELEBRATING 25 YEARS
KAREN NEUENDORF Do you have a message of encouragement for women in business today? Education would be my one suggestion. Joining the Business Women’s Network would be second and the other tip I have for joining the Business Women’s Network is: participate. I’ve always believed that you can’t just turn up with a bulk of business cards telling people your email address and your Instagram. You can’t play business cards like a game of poker. You actually have to build relationships.
SUE WILLIS What are your hopes for women in business, now and into the future? Never lose sight of the importance of surrounding yourselves with inspirational, positive people. We are what we consume and that includes what others offer. Always approach life – business and personal – with an understanding that the more you invest in the growth and success of others, not just yourself, the more you will receive and the richer the experience will be.
MICHALLE FAULKNER What legacy are you proud to have left the SCBWN? My biggest legacy was my participation in the mentoring program. It was something I was very passionate about. That led into a leadership program and we even managed to get council funding. I’m proud of the results of that program, year after year. Some of the amazing business women I see now who are winning awards, publishing books and doing incredible things were newbies in that mentoring program.

MIN SWAN VICKIE MAGIC What was the greatest challenge as a woman in business when you were president? Then, before and now … I believe my biggest challenge was imposter syndrome. Even when I was president, I would ask myself, ‘Why would they choose me when there’s all these amazing women out there who could do such a better job than I could?’ I think the biggest challenge was believing in myself and trusting I was the right person for this role and that I did have something to give and share … and this is something I believe a lot of women are challenged by.
ROZ WHITE Do you have a message of encouragement for women in business today? Find ways to fall in love with what you do. Business is hard work. You need discipline and consistency to have an impact, and it’s very difficult to stay disciplined if you’re not enjoying what you do. Find ways to fall in love with what you do and it will love you back.
What are your thoughts on business and economy on the Sunshine Coast now and looking over the next decade? Leading into the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032, I think there’s some work to be done in the next two to three years so that we don’t end up destroying our beautiful community through lack of collective thinking and we grow in a sustainable and enjoyable way that protects our lifestyle … the SCBWN has a role to play in some advocacy and, as females are genuinely collaborative individuals, I believe the SCBWN can be the secret to actually helping this next 10 years be a really collaborative time for the betterment of all.

If you’re hungry for Italian trattoria-style cuisine, discover All’ Antica Italian Restaurant. All’ Antica is one of the Sunshine Coast’s must-try dining experiences, with an exciting mix of traditional dishes. All’ Antica, 3/115A Point Cartwright Drive, Buddina, 5444 0988, allantica.com.au Q: Describe your cooking style or the cuisine you specialise in? A. I honestly just love cooking everything, and I think our menu reflects that love of diversity of cuisines. I go through phases of immersing myself in one cultures food at a time. French, Italian, Mexican, Indonesian, Indian, Spanish, Japanese, you name it, I love it all. I try and recreate it in my own style, as authentic as I can be. Q: What is your favourite dish on the menu right now? A. For breakfast the Okonomiyaki for sure. Lunch, I’d go the Chicken Satay Rice Bowl, or the Poke Bowl. Q: Do you have a favourite local ingredient to work with? A. I’d have to say our local seafood has to be one of my favourites to work with. We have world class seafood on our doorstep. Mooloolaba prawns would be it, you can do so many different things with them. Q: What do you love most about your role? A. Seeing the passion for our brand and our industry come through our staff. I absolutely love what I do, so to see that same passion be shown from our staff is something pretty special. Q: What do you love to cook at home? A. It’s the simple food for me at home. Food has always brought people together, that’s what I love the most about it. So for me at home it’s a good, homemade pizza. My three-year-old daughter loves making the dough with me. My one-year-old boy will get his chance soon.

MY OPINION
EYES WIDE OPEN TO THE PAST
DRAMA ON THE BUSES
Jane Stephens finds nods to ancient times and bygone eras reimagined in everything from bread to music hits and the skin we show the world.
Ashley Robinson finds himself in the middle of more than just traffic congestion after his recent encounters with public transport.
T
here is nothing new under the sun, it is said. Every trend comes back, shapeshifting and warping time, often just dressed up in new clothes. Songs newly released and on heavy rotation at my gym have riffs that were hits in my teenage years. But now they are nearly always bookended by swearing or spliced with screaming. This month, Paul McCartney toured and The Rolling Stones released an album – both prompting music fans and journalists to froth and cheer. Octogenarians they may be, but they sure know how to preen and please. I recently spent more money than I ever thought a loaf of bread would cost in my lifetime: a special sourdough made with ‘ancient grains’. Precisely what the old seeds were was not in the knowledge bank of the woman who served me. Cacao, the cleaner cousin of chocolate, has been around for 2000 years, but is seen as cool and healthy in the West. The ancient Himalayas must be running out of salt, such is our voracious appetite for the seemingly magical pink seasoning. Kimchi (Korean sauerkraut) and Kombucha (a Chinese fermented drink) have been around forever
and are said to prevent everything from cancer to dermatitis, so we Aussies chow down and guzzle them. Similarly, word got out about Mexico’s treasured chia seed and suddenly it is being made into puddings, tossed in muesli and joining avocado on toast all over the coast. Those ancient Incas would find that funny, I am sure. The difficult simplicity that is yoga and mindfulness – mediation practices of the primeval East – are de rigueur. We are not inventing the wheel, but it is as if we are noticing it properly with eyes wide. Olde world writing abounds, too, in the most unexpected places – on those moveable billboards that are tattoos. Latin scholars such as Cicero and Marcus Aurelius would be astounded. Hits on the tattoo parade include: vita brevis means ‘life is short’; alis grave nil is ‘nothing is heavy for those with wings’. Also massively popular are carpe diem (‘seize the day’) and dum spiro spero (‘while I breathe, I hope’) – words that move me, although I have not felt the need to brand myself with them. Recently, a man at my bus stop had Latin wisdom on his throat: semper fortis or ‘always brave’. I wondered if he knew, and whether he was. Everything old is new again.
Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.
I
t is pretty rare that I catch a local bus. But just the other day, I had more to do with them in 24 hours than I would normally do in 365 days. I got stranded at work without a vehicle. I was trying to figure out how to get home to get a vehicle when a bus – the right one – pulled up in front of me. I pulled out my credit card and was told very politely by a female driver that if I didn’t have the go card, there was no way to pay. She told me she didn’t mind taking the polite ones and ‘you can stay on’, but there must be something wrong with our payment platform. I got home and picked my car up and went back to work. That afternoon, when I got home again, I realised I needed fuel. So, I decided to slip up the road to get some – dressed in a lime-green Bintang singlet, shorts and no shoes, as it was just a short trip up the road (I agree 66-yearold men that look like me should not be seen in public in a singlet). In south Wurtulla, the traffic was blocked in both lanes. So, I crept around the side, got to the front and saw a bloke about my age standing in the middle of
the road, blocking both lanes, with his arms spread like a biblical character parting the Red Sea. In one lane was a bus, and in the other was a young lady in a small white car. She was blowing the horn and crying. I drove off but, about 100 metres later, I got the guilts – not only about the girl but also the bus driver. So, I walked back. As I got there, the girl drove around him and sped off. That left this guy banging on the bus windscreen, wanting to get let in. The driver was telling him he was ringing the police and I am thinking. ‘What the hell am I doing?’. I started talking to him about why he was doing that, with the two lanes still blocked. I was wondering how I was going to shift him when I looked over my shoulder. The girl had come running back from her car, fist cocked and a ‘not happy, Jan’ look on her face that did the job for me with no damage done. She actually scared both of us off the road. The traffic then flowed, with one guy yelling out as he went past: “They will run you over in Wurtulla”. I think him and I both learnt a valuable lesson and will both stay off the road in future.

MY OPINION
A PRINCIPAL, A PRINCE AND A BOY Darryl Watt, Ord Minnett Buderim
Sami Muirhead pays tribute to a woman who was so much more than an educator to the Sunshine Coast Grammar School children, parents and staff who loved her.
L
ight is a special quality in a human. Some rare people are so effervescent, it seems they could never actually succumb to something the rest of us mere mortals do, such as dying. For me, Maria Woods was one of those extraordinary, glittering souls and I am so sad she suddenly passed away late last month after a battle with a blood cancer disease. My heart breaks for her husband Paul and her two sons, whom she cherished and spoke of so often, and also for the wider Sunshine Coast community which adored her. Maria was the principal at Sunshine Coast Grammar School for a decade and was a businesswoman who could light up a room with her smile, her smarts and her sass. “I understand why so many of us are grieving because Maria loved all kids nearly as much as her own and in turn, that made everyone love her because our children are our prized possessions. It was as though everyone felt she was their aunty,” Paul said. The mum radiated kindness, compassion and had a zest for children to thrive in all areas of their lives. I loved that a woman from one of the most prestigious schools on the Coast was at the helm and I always took great pleasure in knowing Mrs Woods was the best role model for all of my children to look to for inspiration. Maria was a pioneer and a wonderful leader who was in the trenches with kids, parents and the teachers. My favourite memory is when I was
somehow coerced into swimming in a parent race at a carnival when my daughter was in Year 1. I swam as fast as I could, with arms and legs flailing through the water, and I thought at the end of 50m I might be having a heart attack as I was so unfit. As I clung onto the edge of the pool for dear life, listening to my heart thumping away, Maria appeared to check I was okay. All I could really see from my point of view were her fabulous red velvet high heels on the edge of the pool. It made me laugh and forget about my huffing and puffing, and I thought, “Only Maria would wear scarlet heels to the school swimming carnival”. Maria would visit the kindy attached to Grammar School, where all my three kids attended, and hold dance lessons with them most weeks. It was always a highlight to see these performances with the tiny tots dancing with our principal. My boy, who is now aged nine, knew Maria his whole life and they had a special interest together in music. More specifically, they both loved the artist Prince. Maria asked Augie to dance with her to Purple Rain and my little one was too shy. But it remained a joke between them that he owed her that dance to that iconic song one day when he finished Year 12. Perhaps the lesson from a loss I am struggling to understand is the metaphor to dance to Prince if the opportunity arises. I like to think Maria is in heaven with those red velvet heels on, giving it her moves to Purple Rain. Her warm light is so terribly missed.

SUPERANNUATION CHOICES ABOUND As the saying goes, we are spoilt for choice these days. This includes one of the biggest decisions that you will make in your life: choosing how and where your superannuation is invested. You can usually choose which fund your employer pays your superannuation to. You can do this when you start a job or change super funds at any time. When deciding upon a super fund, it is important to choose one that will not only help you save for retirement but also one that allows investments that align with your personal values. If you don’t know what investments are held in your super fund, it is impossible to know if you are comfortable with all the companies that you are a shareholder in. One way to achieve this is to invest in a superannuation fund that not only offers transparency but also a virtually unlimited choice of investments. Using a superannuation account that allows you to select the investment options you prefer from a broad investment menu, including managed funds,
exchange-traded funds, listed investment companies, direct equities (Australian and international), term deposits and professionally managed portfolios allows you to know exactly what you are invested in and in turn, allows you to support companies in industries that suit your investment goals and, importantly, your values. For example, you may want to invest in companies that are genuinely involved in tackling climate change, or a medical issue that is close to you. It also allows you to avoid investments in industries that do not align with your personal values. Another benefit of taking this level of control over your super is that you can have a clearer picture of the real value of the investment assets of the super fund. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, which is responsible for protecting the interests of retail superannuation investors, has raised the issue of valuing unlisted investments/assets: that is, those that are not publicly traded. If you invest in assets that are publicly traded, such as shares, you will know exactly their value. Now is a great time to review your super fund to make sure it aligns with your values and goals. ANTARCTICA’S ETHEREAL BEAUTY IS HUMBLING
C
had Carey understands what a privilege it is to be a ‘dream maker’. He sees first-hand how his guests feel as their Antarctic travel dreams and ultimate bucket-list adventures play out. And their joyful reactions are business affirming for him. “I normally host a trip, so it’s amazing for me seeing the passengers interacting (with Antarctica) for the first time,” the Chimu Adventures co-founder says. “I remember going to South Georgia once and we had this early landing on a beach that was completely packed with wildlife. We could barely get off the Zodiac (inflatable boat) because there were so many fur seals and penguins and I was just watching everybody getting off and jumping for glee. “That’s still probably my favourite memory down there. A lot of people come

to us and say, ‘It’s our seventh continent – we’ve got to go there’ and ‘it’s the place that I’ve wanted to go for 20 or 30 years’. “We’re very privileged to be in this business and be able to do these sorts of things. “Those experiences I have ashore of seeing people come ashore for the first time, I still appreciate that it is a dreammaking experience for most people. “That’s, I guess, the reason why I stay in it because you see that so many people do come back happy.” Sunshine Coast-based Chimu Adventures, the Antarctica and Latin America travel specialist, is about to celebrate its 20-year anniversary after humble beginnings as a concept Chad and long-time mate Greg Carter scribbled down on beer coasters. They wanted to fill a niche and create a tour company specialising in adventure
tourism. Chimu Adventures went on to become one of the first travel operators in the world to offer cruises to Antarctica, and has stood the test of time and pandemic lockdowns. Chad, a former engineer, knows that few places evoke such a sensory overload in travellers as seeing Antarctica up close. Whether a first-timer or multiple adventurer, the fifth-largest continent (nearly double the size of Australia) never fails to take the breath away. Extreme weather conditions and glorious isolation create an ideal home for multitudes of marine creatures – humpback, minke, orca, southern right and blue whales, chinstrap, Adélie and gentoo penguins (even possible emperor and king penguin sightings), seals, seabirds including petrel, skua, tern, king cormorants and gull, as well as myriad fish species. But Antarctica’s ethereal beauty is what produces sudden gasps, burns into the mind’s eye and leaves a lasting imprint on the heart. Spectacular ice formations in a palette of blues, towering ’bergs, massively thick ice sheets, a spine of mountains soaring up top 3000 metres in height (technically joining South America’s Andes Mountains by a ridge below sea level), thunderous calving of glaciers, rocky islets and ice shelves around the finger-like peninsula create a diverse landscape that can be grossly unexpected, or at least humbling in its presence. To stand on deck and gaze out to the jaw-dropping scenery could never
be enough. This is a place to explore, discover, learn about and connect with as active participants. That’s what Chad believes sets Chimu Adventures’ Ocean Endeavour cruises apart. He says the passengers want to be active, taking up activities such as photography, sea kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing and ice camping, WORDS: Shirley SinclairW

FLY FROM SUNSHINE COAST INTO NT’S ENDLESS SUMMER Pursers Travel Group’s Anna Powell is a lifelong traveller and learner who has always enjoyed researching the places she visits. When preparing for her first trip to Antarctica, she came across Peter FitzSimons’ book Mawson and the Ice Men of the Heroic Age which chronicles the exploration of Antarctica and the race to the South Pole in the early 20th Century. Anna was fascinated by the tenacity and determination of these amazing men and the lengths they went to with such primitive equipment – sometimes ending in disaster. In 2022, Anna was lucky enough to visit the Arctic and Antarctic and is now looking forward to seeing Macquarie Island and the East Antarctic region to look upon the same landscapes the likes of Mawson, Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen explored all those years ago.

The Dulux Solstice palette, which is one of three identified in the Dulux Colour Forecast 2024, will help create an inviting atmosphere. Solstice centres on rich, warm hues with a freshness and lightness that isn’t too heavy for the summer months ahead. The palette includes light, creamy yellows paired with pastel blues, clay pinks and browns.

• Embrace immersive colour: The hues in the Dulux Solstice palette are designed to be immersive, so select colour for the whole space and highlight architectural features, cabinetry or ceilings with contrasting or tonal colour, depending on the mood you want to create. • Mix and match: The Dulux Solstice palette has already been curated for you, so you can use the entire palette for inspiration and have fun mixing and matching colour. Select larger proportions of colours you love and add an accent or tonal shade through furniture and decorative pieces. • Upcycle furniture pieces: Colour is a fantastic way to breathe life into pre-loved furniture and other items. Introduce the Solstice palette into your home by adding fresh pops of colour to hard furniture items already in the home such as cabinets and coffee tables, or using paint on planters and sculptural vessels. • Choose curves: The Solstice palette
decor has no hard lines. Stick to organic and rounded shapes in furniture and patterns to keep the feeling of the space casual and inviting. • Blue and yellow accents: Warm, sun-soaked shades work especially well when accented with refreshing pops of lemon yellow (Dulux Ripe Lemon) and sky blue (Dulux Pure Blue and Dulux Ocean Surf). • Soft textures: Consider decorating with lighter textures such as linen and cotton in bedding and textiles, including throws and cushions.

JOIN THE 10TH ANNUAL STEPS AUTISM TREEHOUSE CHRISTMAS PARTY
T
he Sunshine Coast’s largest community Christmas event for families living with autism and disabilities will take place at the Kawana Sports Precinct. Hosted by STEPS Pathways Charity, the event will feature fun rides, water slides, a petting zoo and rock-climbing wall, including food stalls and a special visit from Santa. STEPS Group managing director Carmel Crouch says the event is the organisation’s annual community ‘give back’ that provides a safe, secure space for families living with autism and disabilities
to come together and enjoy a fun day out. This event is one she holds very close to her heart, bringing partners, volunteers, and the Coast community together. “To see so many families having so much fun, in an event created just for them, so they can feel supported and have a great time, especially at Christmas, is just very special,” she said. “Participating in Christmas events is something most families might take for granted. But when your family is living with autism and disability, it can be almost impossible to attend regular
events as children can feel overwhelmed – meaning the whole family misses out. “We believe the best way to support families living with autism and disability is by providing the opportunity to connect with others in their community in a safe, and supported environment”. Tickets for the event are on sale now at aus.givergy.com/STEPSAutismTreehouse ChristmasParty2023/ for $20 each, $60 for a family of four or $70 for a family of five. Additional family members are charged single admission. STEPS Autism Treehouse Christmas Party will run from 9am-2pm on Sunday, November 26.
If you are deaf or hard of hearing, there are several different ways to access essential services and supports. The two main programs that deliver hearing supports in Australia are the Hearing Services Program (HSP) and the NDIS. The supports provided depend on your age and eligibility for the relevant program. The HSP funds hearing supports for Australian citizens and permanent residents with hearing loss, including children and young people under 26. The NDIS funds hearing supports for eligible NDIS participants aged 26 and over who are not eligible for the HSP. It also funds additional reasonable and necessary supports that are not available through the HSP for eligible participants of any age. Services and supports may include: • Devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implant speech processor accessories • Other assistive technology such as vibrating smoke alarms and remote controls • Capacity Building supports such as learning Auslan • Maintenance and repairs • Assessments (other than diagnostic assessments). It’s important to remember the NDIS does not fund or reimburse expenses for diagnostic hearing tests even if it’s connected to an NDIS access request. The Leap in! Crew can answer all your questions about NDIS-related supports. Get in touch via TTY/Voice call on 133 677, speak and listen on 1300 555 727, phone 1300 05 78 78 or email connect@leapin.com.au.

CARERS THAT DRIVE MAKE NICK’S LIFE EASIER
SUNCARE SUPPORT HELPS BLUEY STAY ACTIVE
A good life has always been Gina and Steve’s aim for their youngest son Nick*, who was diagnosed with autism as a toddler. The family faced new hurdles when Nick left school and started a job he loves, three days a week. With both parents working and no public transport available, the family relied on a hit-and-miss patchwork of help. That was until they found Carers That Drive. “We first heard about Carers That Drive from a friend who used the service,” Gina says. “As parents of a young man with a disability, it’s a relief to know that he is supported right up until the moment when he is accompanied to our front door.” In 2009, Suzie Coghlan was juggling work and caring for elderly parents and an adult daughter with a disability. She saw the need for a personalised service to help people get around and maintain their independence. So, Suzie established Carers That Drive. Today, this unique service operates on the Sunshine Coast and throughout New South Wales, matching caring, qualified drivers with people of all abilities, from all walks of life.
“Winter? Won’t let that stop me!” And so, Warren, fondly known by all as ‘Bluey’, heads into the water at Mooloolaba Beach for another 3km swim. “I swim with a bunch of old fellas three to four times a week, summer and winter. It is great for my health, and I catch up with my mates and meet new people.” Bluey says. A plumber by trade, Bluey only learnt to swim when he joined the Police Force after his years with the Infantry Battalion in Vietnam. His career and hobbies have been both interesting and varied. Bluey managed 40 drivers and their trucks in the transport industry, as well as working as a manager at Mt Isa Mines. The man of the hour also found the time to continue with his passion of racing sport sedans, sailing his yacht around the great blue and flipping houses that he had renovated. If you thought Bluey’s careers and hobbies were fascinating, just wait until you hear about his water event competitions. In 2008 and 2009, he took part in the Coolangatta Gold: one of the Gold Coast’s premier surf lifesaving events that aims to test endurance and perseverance. He proudly finished the
Carers That Drive made a real difference to Nick and his family. “We are much more at ease now knowing that his drivers really do care and support Nick,” Gina says. “They place his safety first and foremost and he is always happy to see them. They are all lovely, friendly people who are now a vital part of his support team and contribute to Nick leading a good, fulfilling life.” For more information, visit carersthatdrive.com.au. *Real people, names changed.
23km ski paddle, 6.1km board paddle, 3.5km swim and 9.2km run. Bluey has fearlessly battled prostate cancer and faced the world with courage after receiving his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Despite these challenges, Bluey has refused to allow this to stop his love of the water and being active. “Keeping busy is good for your physical and mental health. You don’t need to give up just because you have a diagnosis. Keep challenging yourself, have fun, stay active. You will slow down but don’t stop,” he says. For Suncare support worker Zoe, spending time with Bluey is fun and inspirational. Both members at their local surf lifesaving club, they share a love of the water and have much to talk about. “My work is really rewarding,” Zoe says. “Everyone deserves to live their everyday life as they want to. And I love helping to make that happen.” Visit suncare.org.au/.

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)
Bulls prefer to plod along in a methodical fashion but, this week, you could experience unexpected dramas and disruptions. The sun opposes Uranus (in your sign) so daily life will be unpredictable. The more adaptable you are, the better the final outcomes will be.
You could become anxious, as your daily routine is disrupted. Or your enthusiasm for a work project could overtake your ability to knuckle down and get the job done. If you promise more than you can deliver, then other people will just end up disappointed.
This week a child, friend or lover could shock you by making a surprise move, or a group project could veer off in an unexpected direction. If you keep your adaptability muscles well-flexed, then you’ll adjust to the constantly changing landscape accordingly.
LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)
VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)
LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)
SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)
Leos love to be top cat, but this week you need to ask yourself: ‘Am I leading others or just bossing them around?’ If you power ahead without considering other people, then you’ll create unnecessary chaos and disruption.
When it comes to the way you think, blast out of a boring rut and jump into an exciting new phase. The sun, new moon and Mars are activating your communication zone, so stop avoiding issues and start discussing what you really want and need.
Your patron planet Venus is transiting through your sign which boosts your natural Libran charm, but it can also increase your obsession with perfection. It’s time to boost your confidence, be the authentic you and celebrate your so-called flaws.
This week the sun, new moon and Mars are transiting through your sign, and the sun-Uranus opposition could disrupt relationships and rattle your Scorpio resilience. But it’s time to bounce back and demonstrate your strengths – including courage and persistence.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)
CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)
Sagittarians can be feisty folk. But don’t allow yourself to be drawn into a heated exchange this week (especially involving colleagues, clients or customers). After some reflection and quality ‘me time’ you’ll start to see things from a refreshingly different perspective.
It’s time for an unexpected pivot. Capricorns should examine all possibilities, especially ones that come from left field. With the sun, new moon and Mars in your hopes-and-wishes zone, it’s important to have long-term goals that you’re working towards.
AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18) The sun/Uranus opposition suggests a family fiasco or some other kind of domestic drama. And some Aquarians could experience disruptions at work. Whatever happens, strive to get the balance right between your public life and your private responsibilities.
Are your aspirations for the future ambitious enough? The current stars favour ruminating over big-picture ideas. And there’s no room for false modesty or passive Piscean procrastination as you enjoy talking, texting, posting, promoting and socialising.

SLIDE
ARIES (MAR 21 - APR 19) Expect some highs and lows this week. Venus promises improved relations with a partner or friend. But the sun-Uranus opposition highlights hiccups in your financial management, so strive to be less impulsive and extravagant, and more cautious and thrifty.

with MWP’s man in the water
An old man goes to a priest to confess his sins. He says, “Father, I am 73 and just made love to two beautiful 23-year-old sisters.” The priest tells him to say three Hail Marys and all will be forgiven. The man asks what a Hail Mary is. The priest replies, “Are you not Catholic?” “No,” the man replies. The priest then asks, “Why are you telling me then?” The man says, “Father, I am telling everyone.” No surf, so enjoy a laugh!
