N
ovember is a month when we are reminded of the significance of men’s health and wellbeing. Through the important Movember movement, men are encouraged to grow a moustache to raise much-needed awareness and funds for men’s vital health issues. It’s a powerful catalyst, igniting conversations and breaking down the stigma surrounding men’s health. By normalising these conversations, Movember promotes early detection and intervention, ultimately saving lives. Turn to page 10 for our feature story with all the figures and up-to-date information. Also in this edition, we bring readers all the latest local news and what’s on. Plus, our retirement feature is packed with expert advice to help you live your best life. And, with the festive season just around the corner, we have some sweet treats to get you in the Christmas spirit. Until next week, enjoy the read!

AGENDA
OUR FATIGUED YOUNG DOCTORS FEAR MISTAKES A recent survey highlights the chronic understaffing issues at state hospitals and the significant amount of overtime being undertaken.
C
hronic understaffing at Queensland public hospitals has been highlighted by a study that reveals junior doctors are fatigued and fear mistakes, a peak medical body says. The Queensland government also has rallied behind their young medics, saying more must be done to support them after the survey found a third didn’t feel safe at work. More than 700 junior doctors across the state were surveyed about employment conditions for the annual Resident Hospital Health Check. Peak medical body the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Queensland says the results highlight understaffing issues at state hospitals, with many young doctors also working significant overtime.
More than half were concerned about making a clinical error due to fatigue from long hours, with 18 doctors working more than 24 hours of overtime in a fortnight. Just one-in-10 doctors worked a standard fortnight with no overtime, the survey conducted by Australian Salaried Medical Officers’ Federation Queensland and AMA Queensland’s Committee of Doctors in Training (CDT) states. “Chronic understaffing means junior doctors are working significant amounts of overtime, with fatigue and overwork affecting our ability to make good judgments and perform to the best of our ability,” CDT chair Dr Elise Witter says. “Patients deserve our best.” More than 30 per cent had experienced bullying, discrimination or harassment.
A third reported that they had felt unsafe at work. “Incidents of bullying and harassment remain unacceptably high and require a sustained and systematic response to ensure a work environment that promotes staff and patient safety,” Dr Witter says. The Queensland results are similar to the 2022 national medical training report in which a third of junior doctors experienced or witnessed bullying, harassment or discrimination, while half rated their workload as “heavy” or “very heavy”. The Queensland study did show an increase in the number of doctors being properly paid for their overtime. But Dr Witter says 43 per cent of doctors claim only part of their overtime, with an additional nine per cent not claiming any – despite working extra hours. AMA Queensland president Dr Maria Boulton says they will continue to meet with state health and hospital services (HHS) to ensure support for young doctors, whom she describes as “the most vulnerable financially and emotionally”. “But HHS still have a way to go to provide a more positive and support culture for our doctors,” she says. Health Minister Shannon Fentiman says a wellbeing workforce committee chaired by the chief medical officer has been set up, working directly with the AMA to help support junior doctors. But Ms Fentiman says more has to be done, judging by the survey results. “I want to acknowledge that our junior doctors are going above and beyond,” she says. “We need to do more to support them and that’s why I released a draft workforce strategy to hear from our clinicians about how we can better support them and how we can get more junior doctors.” – AAP.
OPTUS NOW FACES THE TEST OF CUSTOMER CONFIDENCE Optus is picking up the shattered remains of customers’ confidence as it faces the fallout from its second major crisis in 18 months. The telecommunications giant suffered about a 14-hour outage last week that prevented 10 million customers and businesses making and receiving calls, or connecting to the internet. The outage occurred as the company was starting to recover from a data breach in September 2022 that affected millions of customers and led to the theft of 10,000 passport, driver’s licence and Medicare numbers, which were leaked online. Optus director Matt Williams says the company is working hard to retain customers. He says the company knows its customers could turn to other phone service providers. “We really value, very highly, the relationships we have with our customers, the loyalty they have to us, their ongoing choice of us,” he says. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles says the telco needs to be upfront about what caused the outage. “Optus really needs to make clear to its customers exactly what happened here,” he says. – AAP.

Cancer-sniffing dogs
Do you remember?
Did you know? Smaller forks can lead us to eat less. A study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that when diners were given smaller forks with which to eat their meals, they ended up eating less. The researchers say this is because the smaller forkfuls of food lead diners to “feel they are not making much of a dent in consuming their food and, hence, satisfying their hunger”.

Many car manufacturers still choose to install GPS navigation systems in new vehicles. But as a standalone unit, GPS navigation technology is nearing the end of its lifespan. Current smartphones are more than capable of getting the modern human from Point A to B with the use of navigation apps such as Google, Bing and Apple Maps. Once again, advancements in mobile technology have forced other, older technology into obsolescence.
Today in history – November 16 They don’t call them ‘man’s best friend’ for nothing. Researchers have found that dogs are able to pick up on a specific scent that cancer produces in a person – a scent that is undetectable to humans. So, if your dog is acting strange around you, it may be you who needs to get checked out by a physician.

FEATURE STORY
GIVE THE MOUSTACHE A TWIRL FOR CHARITY A global campaign raising awareness and funds for research into men’s health has reached a 20-year milestone. Words: Caitlin Zerafa.
T
he month of November has become synonymous with raising awareness for men’s health – and it’s all centred around growing a moustache. The movement is coined as Movember and it has become a much-loved way to spark conversations, raise money, honour the memory of men lost to cancer or mental health and forge a way forward in health initiatives. In 2023, Movember is celebrating 20 years and reflecting on the impact the far-reaching movement has had on men’s health in that time. An idea conceived in a Melbourne bar, today it reaches 23 countries and has contributed to thousands of projects helping men and their families impacted by a diagnosis. The efforts of thousands of moneyraising ‘Mo Bros’ who grow their best moustaches every year assist the charity to break down stigmas, educate, offer support and resources and fund groundbreaking research. Movember funding has led to the
10 My Weekly Preview | November 16, 2023

development of five life-extending therapies, three PET imaging radiotracers and a revolutionary blood test. It also aided two of the most significant medical breakthroughs in the management of advanced prostate cancer in the 21st century: scans that can detect the smallest of tumours once they have spread outside the prostate and radioactive molecules that can destroy cancer cells without damaging surrounding healthy tissue. These inventions have contributed to a decline of up to a third in the prostate cancer death rate across five out of the six countries where Movember operates. Movember CEO Michelle Terry says the movement has achieved so much in two decades, but there’s always more work to be done. “The harsh reality is that globally, we lose one man to suicide every minute of every day; prostate cancer is estimated to be the most diagnosed cancer in men; and testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men,” Ms Terry says. “Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing a health crisis and we
can’t afford to stay silent. That’s why we’ll continue to make noise, to push boundaries and to help shape the health and wellbeing of men for generations to come. “We know that healthier men make healthier families, communities and societies.” So, what’s next for men’s health in Australia? In a groundbreaking move to revolutionise personalised cancer care in Australia, the federal government – through Cancer Australia – has pledged a $5 million investment into the Australian Real World Cancer Evidence Network. This initiative, spearheaded by Movember and Monash University, will involve the implementation of a national platform to track the outcomes and experiences of cancer patients. The automated technology will rapidly advance personalised cancer care research and help bridge the gap between evidence and clinical practice to improve patient outcomes. For more information on this month’s campaign, visit movember.com.
MOVEMBER’S IMPACT ACROSS 20 YEARS • The Movember movement has supported more than 1320 men’s health projects across 23 countries since 2003. • Since 2006 Movember has funded the development of 54 inventions, 70 therapies and 107 diagnostic tests for prostate cancer. • Movember has invested almost $350 million in more than 600 biomedical research projects focusing on prostate and testicular cancer. • The movement has funded four prostate cancer registries, with more than 200,000 men.

FEATURE STORY Do you have a theme this year for your mo-growing campaign? This year I am doing a ‘mystery mo’, with hints coming out for my final mo formation on November 31. The second hint for this month is that the mystery mo belongs to a great sportsman.
Nick Sobey. Inset Michael Sobey
HEADLINE Sunshine Coast lawyer and passionate Movember campaigner Nick Sobey is once again getting behind the cause in 2023. Inspired by his late father Michael Sobey, Nick is passionate about continuing his dad’s proud legacy of raising $60,000 for men’s health over 15 years. Nick spoke with My Weekly Preview about what Movember means to him and reminds men to keep on top of their health – no matter their age. How long have you been participating in Movember and what inspired you to start growing a mo? I have been a ‘Mo Bro’ for six years. My initial inspiration was to see if I could grow a moustache for a good cause (which fortunately was a yes). But after my dad was diagnosed with cancer, it was to do whatever I could to support him and men’s mental health. Why is Movember so close to your heart? My Dad was a stalwart campaigner for Movember since 2009, running yearly lunches and rocking some pretty incredible mos over the years. When he passed away from bowel cancer last year, I couldn’t think of a better way to support his legacy and to continue the good work my dad did for the community.
From you experience, tell us how the Sunshine Coast community gets behind the campaign and what it means to have that support? The Sunshine Coast community is an incredible place to be a part of, and this shines through with the hundreds of charities and community organisations all around the Coast. Last year, the community came out in force and we raised over $18,000 for bowel cancer and $35,000 for Movember at the Michael Sobey Memorial Lunch, which is absolutely amazing. I’m certain the community will be behind this year’s event and I’m hoping we can raise even more for such a great cause. What is your message to men this Movember? That cancer – prostate, bowel or otherwise – doesn’t discriminate. My Dad passed away at 50 and was fairly fit and healthy when he first got his diagnosis at 48. So, if it’s been a while since a check-up, it might be worth it to book one in this month – it might save your life. Mental health doesn’t discriminate either, and sometimes the most confident and happy people we know can be dealing with some pretty difficult things. So, after you’ve booked that appointment, take a moment to call a mate and check in – it might save their life, too. Visit movember.com and find the ‘Michael Sobey Memorial’ team to support Nick’s campaign.

tips
MOVEMBER’S TIPS TO TAKE ACTION OVER YOUR HEALTH 1. Spend time with people who make you feel good: Stay connected. Your mates are important and spending time with them is good for you. Catch up regularly, check in and make time. 2. Talk, more: You don’t need to be an expert and you don’t have to be the sole solution, but being there for someone, listening and giving your time can be lifesaving. 3. Know the numbers: At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it’s right for you to have a PSA test. If you have a father or brother with prostate cancer, you should be having this
conversation at 45. Know your numbers, know your risk and talk to your doctor. 4. Know thy nuts: Get to know what’s normal for your testicles. Give them a check regularly and go to the doctor if something doesn’t feel right. 5. Move more: Add more activity to your day. Do more of what makes you feel good. Take a walking meeting. Park further away. Instead of the lift, take the stairs. Cycle to work instead of driving. If this article has raised issues for you, or someone you know, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or MensLine Australia on 1300 789 978.

NEWS
FREE LAUNDRY SOAKING UP INCREASING DEMAND Orange Sky volunteers are servicing a 20 per cent increase in mobile loads from those finding themselves on the streets in this housing crisis.
A
n astounding amount of dirty laundry has given a stark insight into the escalating homelessness crisis on the Sunshine Coast. Orange Sky, a free mobile laundry service, has reported a spike in demand
for its services across the region, delivering more than 400 additional mobile loads this year, taking the total to close to 25 tonnes of washing for local homeless people. Speaking to Mal Cayley on his Homes for Everyone podcast last week, Orange
Sky co-founder and executive director Lucas Patchett says since launching in 2014, more people are using the charity’s services than ever before, as they seek to access a load of washing and a warm shower. “We have operated a similar number of shifts year-to-date as we did at this time last year – only (an) extra 25 shifts – but our volunteers did more than 400 additional loads of washing, equating to 4.11 tonnes of additional laundry,” Mr Patchett says. “That’s almost a 20 per cent increase. “Our laundry van Mikey launched on the Sunshine Coast in April 2017 and runs services all the way from Caloundra to Noosa. “We now have 103 volunteers operating 11 shifts per week on the Sunshine Coast, including an increasing number of services in suburban areas like Maleny which, typically, we never thought would need to access our services. “We’re seeing more and more people come down who would have never thought they would use our service before. “The demand is absolutely going through the roof and we’re just doing the best that we can to respond.” Mr Patchett says volunteers have
also engaged in 2700 hours of non-judgmental conversations across the Coast shifts this year. Mal Cayley, head of research at Direct Collective, says that as the rental and housing supply slump creeps from the coast to the hinterland, the human toll of the crisis cannot be understated. “The incredible volunteers who deliver Orange Sky’s services are helping those who find themselves on the streets, and we’re looking at close to 3000 Sunshine Coast locals already or about to find themselves in this situation,” Mr Cayley says. “But when you start understanding the impact of other people who are couch surfing – and even the impact on the people whose couches they’re surfing on – as well as all those people living in cars, they might not even admit to themselves that they’re homeless, but they have a declining ability to find somewhere to live. “This starts creating an unstitching of the fabric of our local community and that has very serious consequences.” The Coast’s rental crisis reflects a national issue, with an estimated 70,000 rentals required to bring Australia’s housing market back to equilibrium, a new Domain report states.

COAST MAYOR MAKES SHOCK ANNOUNCEMENT Mark Jamieson is putting ‘my family and my personal interests first’ in deciding not to contest the upcoming election. WORDS: Chris Gilmore.
S
unshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has announced he will not run in next year’s local government elections. Cr Jamieson made the announcement
last Friday morning outside the Sunshine Coast City Hall. “After nearly 12 years serving the communities of the Sunshine Coast and vigorously representing the interests of
Mayor Mark Jamieson is the second mayor to lead Sunshine Coast Council since it was formed in 2008, following the amalgamation of the Noosa Council, Maroochy Council and City of Caloundra. Noosa Council deamalgamated from Sunshine Coast Council in 2014. Today’s council footprint covers 10 divisions from Beerburrum in the south to Doonan in the north and west as far as Kenilworth and down to Peachester. our residents to the other tiers of government, I have decided that it is time to put my family and my personal interests first,” he says. “For this reason – and this alone – I have decided not to contest the next election for mayor of our great Sunshine Coast Council on March 16, 2024.” Cr Jamieson says he will continue to serve as mayor until the election has concluded. “There is still much to do between now and March next year and the Sunshine Coast community can be assured that I will continue to give everything to this role as mayor until my term ends in just over four months,” he says.
Cr Jamieson will not speculate on a potential successor as mayor. “If there is one piece of advice I will offer to our residents it’s that when it comes time to vote for your next mayor in March next year, remember it is too great a risk for the future of our council and our region to place your trust in someone who is aligned in any way with a major political party,” he says. After posting the council’s first $1 billion budget this year, Cr Jamieson is paying tribute to his fellow councillors for helping create “one of the three most financially sustainable councils in the state”. “I want to particularly acknowledge and thank my fellow councillors – our current councillors and those who I have served with since 2012 – for being part of an incredible journey as we have shaped a healthy, smart and creative future for our Sunshine Coast,” he says. He is also expressing his “deep appreciation” of his family for their “enduring and steadfast support, loyalty, tolerance and commitment during our public life”. Want more news daily? BEST OF THE BEST BUSINESSES CELEBRATED The Sunshine Coast business community shone at the 2023 Sunshine Coast Business Awards Gala last weekend.
A
maze World has been crowned 2023 Sunshine Coast Business Awards Business of the Year, also taking out the Experiences Large category for the second year in a row.
The Sunshine Coast tourism attraction headlines 38 winners in this year’s Awards, announced at the Sunshine Coast business community’s annual night of nights, the Sunshine Coast Business Awards Gala.
Sunshine Coast Business Awards Chair Jennifer Swaine says the celebration this year was something special, with 900 members of the business community, including finalists and sponsors, gathering to celebrate another year, with comedian, actor and entertainer Shane Jacobson returning as emcee. “The entertainment this year featured talented performers, including young Noosa singer-songwriter Zara, a 50-strong Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir and the Award’s favourite band Amplify led by Chad Trent, who together kicked off the night with a very special performance of the song “Climb” made famous by Miley Cyrus,” Mrs Swaine says. “The Sunshine Coast Business Awards is all about celebrating the incredible business talent on the Coast, so we are incredibly proud to showcase exclusively local talent at this year’s Gala. “Like our performers, our business winners represent the best of the best of our region and were selected from 137 finalists across 17 different categories. “Every year the quality of the applications just gets better and better, and this year that was even more
evident, which showcases the depth and breadth of the growing Sunshine Coast economy.” Mrs Swaine says delivering the world-class calibre Awards program, now in its 28th year, is a huge job, made possible by the hundreds of hours put in by the volunteer awards committee, volunteer judges, and the strong support of the Awards sponsors and stakeholders, many of whom return year after year to support the program. “We would like to congratulate this year’s winners and also thank all 137 finalists as well as the 205 businesses who entered this year.” This year, there are five Hall of Fame inductees – businesses who have won their category in the past three years – and these businesses were showcased in a very special video presentation featuring all the Hall of Fame businesses, Damien Glanville from naming-rights sponsor LPE, who also emceed the showcase, accompanied by the band performing ‘Eye of the Tiger’. The Hall of Fame inductees included Becker Constructions, Coast2Bay Housing Group, Travis Schultz & Partners, Waste Free Systems, and Wildings Forest School.

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL PROMOTION
FROM THE MAYOR Hi everyone, We’re encouraging residents and businesses to celebrate Disability Action Week with a range of activities and events on offer across the region. The program runs from November 25 to December 2, with this year’s theme being: ‘Access ignites: it’s good business’. The week acknowledges the contribution people living with a disability make in all aspects of our lives. One of the key events is an all-access day at the beach. There will be all-abilities activities, including access mats, beach wheelchairs, sand and water play, entertainment, a sensory tent and an afternoon barbecue. Make sure you come along for an afternoon of free family fun and help celebrate International Day of People with Disability. Everyone is welcome to attend. The week will also feature a panel discussion at Altitude Nine that will address how we can become a more accessible and inclusive tourism destination. Disability Action Week provides an opportunity to empower people with disability and improve access and inclusion throughout our Sunshine Coast. You can view all the events planned on Council’s website.

D
o you have aquatic sport stories or memorabilia from the Sunshine Coast that can tell a story? In April 2024 and each year until the Olympics, Landsborough Museum will celebrate our sporting history with the ‘Grassroots to Glory’ exhibition and digital story, starting with aquatic sports. Sadly, for a region that loves being on and in the water, it turns out – having audited the collection at the museum
– that little memorabilia, photos or stories are available to outline our rich aquatic sporting heritage. Your local stories, photos and memorabilia can help bring our heritage to life. Who: Calling on weekend water lovers, sporting club members, professional athletes and perhaps those who hate the water but would love to find a home for the prized fishing nets bequeathed by good old Uncle Bernie! What: A diver’s helmet, perhaps? A
lifeguard flag, a locally made surfboard or water wear? The Heritage Team would love to see it all. Who and when: The search is on but not just for the superstars of sport. Remember, the title is ‘Grassroots to Glory’. So, local clubs through to professionals and all ages can help, from any era or decade. If you can help, contact the Sunshine Coast Council Heritage Team on 5420 8600 or culturalheritage@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Your help is needed to improve new recycling app
A toxic, prolific and destructive weed is threatening the Sunshine Coast once again. Senecio madagascariensis, commonly known as fireweed, is considered one of Australia’s worst weeds, spreading rapidly to poison livestock and out-compete native species. The 30-year battle against the spread of fireweed in the region has so far prevented the species becoming established locally. But with an increase in recent sightings, Council, Biosecurity Queensland and landholders are acting fast to reduce the impacts. If you see fireweed in our region, snap a photo and send it to customer.service@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, SMS 0485 813 130 with your name and where you spotted it or make a report to 5475 7272. You’ll be protecting our farmers, animals and our beautiful natural areas and biodiversity. November is Invasive Species Month – an ideal opportunity to learn more about our region’s weeds and the simple ways everyone can protect our environment, agriculture and economy.

T
his National Recycling Week, Sunshine Coast Council is asking the community to download Recycle Mate: a community-driven app that improves when people use it. Recycle Mate has AI technology that identifies your waste and recyclables. It tells you the best disposal option in your area. Every time an item is checked on the app, the feedback is used to grow the search engine. The more images the app sees, the better it gets at recognising those items. Recycle Mate provides you with the
best recycling information based on your location. The app will ask for your location to provide directions to the nearest drop-off point. If you are uncomfortable about providing your location, enter a location nearby instead. Recycling the right materials is a great way to recover resources and give them a second chance at life. It means
less waste to landfill and is a simple action we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint. Help improve Council’s recycling app and get your waste sorted. Learn the right way to recycle by downloading Recycle Mate for free on Apple or Google Play or search your item at recyclemate.com.au.

When you look around our landscape, tourism and agriculture just go together. It’s a bit like cheese and wine – a perfect match. So, it was a natural fit for our two industries to come together to shine a light on our incredible food and drink. Last week, we launched a new brand to promote the region’s agritourism experiences. It’s called Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry – representing how our rich volcanic soils and thriving coastline provide an abundance of fresh local produce and are home to more than 900 producers. Not all our visitors know this – and many still think of us as just prawns and pineapples. However, that’s all about to change as we invite foodies to come and open the doors to Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry
through our new campaign. I love that the campaign showcases the quirky, including camel cuddles and mushroom growers (they call themselves fun-guys) to cooking schools with world-renowned chefs and luxury farm stays. It’s sure to tempt even the most discerning foodies to come and see for themselves what it’s all about. Do your tastebuds a favour and check it out at qldsunshinepantry.com. Queensland’s Sunshine Pantry is stocked with: • more than 900 producers • 24 food and beverage tours • 18 food events • 400 food tourism experiences • six food precincts • 740 restaurants • 22 craft breweries • one Big Pineapple.

MY OPINION
MODERN MAN IN PERSPECTIVE
TAKING BAD LUCK AT A GALLOP
Jane Stephens is doing her bit to lift the profile of International Men’s Day that seems to suffer from a lack of publicity and celebration the world over.
Ashley Robinson’s cup runneth over with omens but ‘legs 11’ redemption deserts him on the line in Flemington on the big race day.
P
roclaimed international days make me smile, stop and wonder. There is seemingly a day for everything – as if, unless the United Nations draws our attention to this thing once a year, we may not appreciate it in the fullness of its glory. This week, for example, we have World Philosophy Day on November 16: a day on which UNESCO says we can “honour the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual”. It is certainly something to think about. In addition, we have strange bedfellows sharing November 19: it is both World Toilet Day and International Men’s Day. The mind boggles. Toilet humour aside, this is the week when we should ponder the positive value men bring to the world. International Women’s Day gets a lot of attention, even in this nation where so much is now fair and equal. There are breakfasts, a colour theme, speeches and signage. International Men’s Day barely rates a mention, but it is important to take opportunities for positivity and praise. These are our husbands, sons, fathers, brothers and friends, after all. There are
many downsides to being a bloke. They are far more likely to be victims of violence, they suicide at triple the rate of women, and they suffer lung cancer and heart disease at twice the rate of females. They are much more likely to be diagnosed with behavioural disorders and learning disabilities. They are more likely to drop out of school, are injured more often and die younger. But I also think the modern man is a wonder to behold. He can be tender as well as tough, he is more likely to share the load at home, contribute a tempered perspective and, as a practical benefit, be stronger and faster. I, for one, am grateful for the maleness of the good men in my life. The talk about ‘toxic masculinity’ needs to be balanced with ‘male positivity’ – being affirming and optimistic about men. For society to advance towards true equity, it helps if men are not constantly told how horrid they are. We have to resist talking about all men as being hopeless, and the idea that all men are intrinsically emotionless, violent or sexist. They are not. We are all spinning on this big, blue ball together. Mutual respect and admiration make the journey much more enjoyable.

I
am writing this shortly after the running of the Melbourne Cup, which was quite an eventful day for yours truly. The day before, someone asked me who I was backing. At that stage, I hadn’t even looked at the field. So that night, I had a look and found a horse called Ashrun. It was number 11, drawing barrier 11. I did some research and that barrier has had the most winners in the Cup. As it was my favorite number, the only thing left was to ask whether it could actually run faster than its namesake. Form suggested it could and, at 25-1, I was set. I went to bed quite confident and even more so, I dreamt it was winning halfway up the straight until I was awoken by my dog George which was in the process of spewing on my sheets and quilt. I must say, the weird noise dogs make in the lead-up to spewing would make a great alarm because you wake up quick but, alas, not quick enough. It was 4.11am, so I wondered, ‘Was that another omen?’ After I cleaned one mess up, I went out in the back yard to find another. Did I mention I have synthetic grass?
So, not a great start to Cup Day, but I was still hopeful. I got to work for our Cup function at Alex Surf Club and was checking the PA. I found that the TVs and the sound had a delay, which was a worry, but I was assured it would be rectified by race time. So, I was told to check the microphone – which I did, with a few swear words. Now I thought the PA was just in the one room but, no, it was throughout the building. We were open and – you guessed it – it was 10.11am. There were only a couple of people in the main bar I had to apologise to. But then I get a visit from a police sergeant who informed me they were having a conference downstairs and were concerned about my wellbeing ... but more so about the swearing. Awesome. So after more apologising, my day got better. That was until the race and, of course, Ashrun ran bloody fourth. One more length and I would have doubled my money but it was not to be. Last week, I learnt a few things: don’t clean up dog spew with your face washer, and I only have two types of luck – bad luck and no luck at all! Bring on 2024.

MY OPINION
TIMELY DELIVERY, BIG SISTER Sami Muirhead raises a toast to a humble Aussie icon of the food industry that spreads joy in the most-unusual ways and places.
O
ne of the greatest food items in the world is celebrating its 100th birthday. Vegemite is one century! Yes, for 10 decades, the real black gold has been feeding families and fuelling hungry Aussies. Vegemite draws a primal response from me and makes me feel like I have come home. It comforts my soul and my stomach. I grew up on it. I have been lucky enough to dine in the actual Eiffel Tower. I have slurped plump and salty oysters shucked fresh from the cold waters of Tasmania. And I have feasted on a homemade lasagna masterpiece that took my Mimi three days of cooking to prepare. All these meals will forever be in my memory as some of the best of my life and I have a highlights reel from each of them tucked away safely in my brain that I often play in my head. But the best meal of my life by a country mile was, in fact, Vegemite on toast. After a few days of labour, my first child finally came into this world in a dramatic birth. I honestly thought I was going to die. At the end of the ordeal, where nothing went to plan, my baby girl was finally sleeping in a clear crib near my
hospital bed. I was alone with my thoughts, processing the miracle of life and the fact I was now a mum. It was something I had waited my whole life to be called. It was at that moment that my big sister came through the doors with two pieces of toast covered in Vegemite. My legs did not work from all the drugs I had been given and I felt very overwhelmed at the future and yet giddy
“The best meal of my life ... was Vegemite on toast” beyond compare after finally meeting my bundle of joy. My sister handed me the toast and I am pretty sure I cried with happiness. That was the best meal of my life. I had everything I needed right in that room and I had happiness spread on a piece of toast. Sometimes, it really is the simple things in life that bring you the most feelings of being content. Happy 100th birthday to you, Vegemite, and thanks for the magic you hold in your jar.

blond, black or brunette wig, so they could continue dancing. When my daughter was young, I made sure she had a genuine Barbie. She also had Scuba-Ken. His legs turned black when immersed in water making him look more like diseased Ken. This wasn’t a fault but made it appear as though he was wearing a wetsuit. Ken went on many scuba diving adventures in our bathtub while Barbie floated among the bubbles. The original dolls, named after the real children of their inventor, Ruth Handler, have changed over the years. Barbie has achieved greatness in a long list of occupations from doctor to robotics engineer, all while looking gorgeous with a smile on her perfect face. In the movie, Ken appears to have no other role than to admire Barbie and her achievements. His occupation is “beach”, which he uses as verb and noun to describe all that he does. At times, the movie was a long advertisement for the popular toy, showcasing some of the different themed Barbies and the outfits that have been produced for both her and Ken. I didn’t find the Barbie movie uproariously funny, but it definitely had some amusing bits. I’d call it light-hearted and goodness knows, we can all do with that. However, it wasn’t all just a romp through Barbie land aimed squarely at little girls. There were many thought-provoking and touching moments that highlighted some of the issues we face in the real world. The best part? I wasn’t the only older person in the cinema! Visit lockwoodfreelance.com
hen it comes to movies, comedy is my favourite genre. Actually, I’ll watch just about anything, but to sit back in the comfort of a cinema seat and unwind with a good laugh is a great way to forget about life for a while. Maybe it was for a slightly younger audience, but I recently chose to see Barbie from the list of movies showing. I went alone, so I couldn’t even pretend I’d been dragged there by children. In my defence, there had been masses of publicity, so much so that a movie about a pink-clad child’s doll somehow became a serious rival to the more sombre topic of atomic bombs in the film Oppenheimer. Talk about apples and oranges, yet there was lot of hype comparing the two box office hits. Further in my defence, Barbie dolls have been around since before I was born, so there is the childhood nostalgia factor. My memories include being jealous when my sister received a genuine Barbie, whereas I had the fake lookalike. Clearly of inferior quality (even to a child) my tall, buxom doll was called Diana. Unlike Barbie, she was not deserving of a box and came trapped against flat cardboard, held down by moulded plastic. Her redemption and the reason I loved her was that she came with four different wigs. We soon discovered that if shaken hard enough, Diana’s wigs would fly off of her smooth head. Barbie and Diana would dance vigorously until the hairdo would shoot across the bedroom. Diana would, of course, be mortified and quickly replace her curly, red do with a

CLEVER GIFT IDEA Looking for a great gift idea or something to add to your Christmas hampers? Food has a way of bringing people together and is ideal for gift giving. Macadamias have been treasured as gifts across the world for centuries. Hailing from thousand-year-old rainforests just up the road at Mooloo, macadamia trees were a rare find for Indigenous Australians. Macadamias were used as special ceremonial gifts and traded between Aboriginal tribes. Today, Nutworks has a delicious range of products, including salted caramel, chilli, dark chocolate and honey macadamias, plus premium wines, confectionery, shortbreads and spirits, which are packaged into curated hampers ready to give. Or why not create your own? Visit the Nutworks website for more.
FRESH TIP FOR STORING MOOLOOLABA PRAWNS IN THE FRIDGE One thing is for certain: Australians love their prawns at Christmas time. And with access to some of the best, biggest and freshest in the world right here at Mooloolaba, it’s likely local fish markets will already have a slew of orders for the festive season. So, what’s the best way to keep your Mooloolaba prawns fresh? Fresh prawns (cooked or raw) can be refrigerated for two to three days between 0 and 4ºC. Leave them in their shells, place them in a single layer on a plate or tray, cover tightly with plastic wrap and store in the coldest part of the fridge.

NOMADIC COUPLE FINDS FOREVER HOME IN VIBRANT COMMUNITY
S
ince moving to Stockland’s luxury B by Halcyon lifestyle community, nestled in the foothills of Buderim, Glenn and Kathryn Tonges are finally ready to settle down. From Bli Bli to Beijing, Kawana Island to Buderim, the couple previously sought a change of scenery every few years. “We put it down to getting a seven-year itch,” Glenn says. “We were at Bli Bli for seven years, then spent seven years in China before we settled back at Kawana Island, again for seven years. “Now, however, we look forward to
being part of the B by Halcyon community long-term.” The couple made their latest move in November 2022 and haven’t looked back. “While we loved our location on Kawana Island, we recognised that we needed to look at how to do things differently for the next chapter of our life,” Kathryn says. “Being part of a community was a big part of that.” Glenn, a former science and maths teacher, made a significant career change in his mid-30s that saw him designing and constructing oceanariums and aquariums
around the world. The first project he worked on was Underwater World – now known as SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium – at Mooloolaba, which opened in 1989. When their two sons finished university and started working, the couple seized an opportunity in 2007 to move to China. Glenn delivered projects across China, South Korea, Russia and the Middle East. Throughout her teaching career, Kathryn taught students from prep to tertiary. In China, she took her experience as an educator in a new direction and
taught effective parenting courses to the ex-pat community. Glenn retired in 2014 when they returned to the Sunshine Coast. But Kathryn continued teaching, now voluntarily. “I enjoy helping people, teaching parenting courses, personal empowerment courses, supporting other instructors and offering general support,” she says. Settled into their new community at B by Halcyon, Glenn and Kathryn adore the house they chose and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding bushland that sweeps out beyond their backyard. “I love the proximity to nature,” Kathryn says. “I grew up on a sugar cane farm at Bli Bli and we recently found out that the land here at B by Halcyon used to be a sugar cane farm. We are doing things we hadn’t done before and having all the wonderful facilities in one spot makes it much easier to access everything.” The couple get together with their neighbours for bowls on Sunday afternoons, attend Thursday night socials to meet more people, compete in monthly trivia events and have started learning pickleball. “I’m enjoying the stretch and Pilates classes and visits with the exercise physiologist and I love popping down to the library when I’m ready for a new book,” Kathryn says. Meanwhile, Glenn is enjoying the gym facilities and trying his hand at the simulated golf facility where he can improve his game on different courses worldwide, from Pebble Beach to St Andrews. “I hadn’t played for years,” he says, “but it’s a great way to learn and practice.” Visit stockland.com.au/ halcyon-communities.

HEARING CLINICS BOAST LONG-STANDING SERVICE Connect Hearing has been serving the Sunshine Coast region for more than a dozen years. The clinic is part of a nation-wide network consisting of more than 130
healthcare hearing centres throughout Australia, supported by a highly experienced telehealth team. The clinics located in Buddina, Buderim, Caloundra and Tewantin on the Coast cater to a wide-ranging area. Clients from all over the region visit their local clinic and access remote support services. Connect Hearing clinics offer hearing tests for private and Governmentfunded clients. Additionally, they provide services for hearing aids and other assistive listening technology, along with counselling and support for those dealing with hearing loss. The team members at Connect Hearing make it their aim to find their clients the right hearing solution that best suits their lifestyle and needs. Regular monitoring of hearing is crucial for early detection of any issues and ensuring the best path to healthy hearing. “Getting your hearing checked is of paramount importance,” Connect Hearing Caloundra clinician Zara Pinheiro says. “Hearing loss can develop gradually over time, but the most-effective rehabilitation outcomes come from early intervention. Hearing is not just
about the ears. A significant part of the hearing process occurs in the brain. “If the brain misses out on the stimulus of sound, it forgets how to process sound and has to be retrained. “Loss of the stimulus in your brain can lead to a decline in cognitive performance”. Ms Pinheiro suggests 12-monthly hearing tests.
“The most-effective rehabilitation outcomes come from early intervention” “Hearing Care Specialists at Connect Hearing are not only skilled in testing different aspects of hearing and fitting hearing aids, but also collaborate with medical professionals such as general practitioners and ear, nose and throat specialists to create individualised hearing rehabilitation plans that are individualised to suit each person’s needs,” she says. “We stay up to date with the latest science and technology to provide our clients with the best-possible service and
hearing solutions.” Ms Pinheiro emphasises that “you’re never too young to have a hearing test”. “While hearing loss and hearing aids have developed a bit of stigma, it’s important to know that hearing loss is not exclusive to older individuals and that hearing aids can significantly improve the quality of life for people of all ages,” she says. “For those working in noisy environments, such as construction or with loud machinery, hearing checks should be a routine part of their health check-ups.” The audiologist has been at Connect Hearing since January 2017. Ms Pinheiro brings extensive experience from her previous roles in South Africa before relocating to Australia, and values the opportunity to provide her patients with cutting-edge technology and excellent after-sales service. “The team at Connect Hearing’s Sunshine Coast-based clinics collectively possess a wealth of experience and knowledge, which we are all eager to share with our clients,” she says. “We are all really excited about meeting new clients and look forward to welcoming them to one of our clinics soon.” Visit connecthearing.com.au/.

The stunning GemLife Moreton Bay over-50s lifestyle resort’s Country Club
GEMLIFE COUNTRY CLUB REFLECTS ITS NATURAL SURROUNDINGS
O
ver-50s lifestyle resort living is being taken to new heights with the release of eco-friendly GemLife Moreton Bay. The lifestyle resort offers buyers an impressive location, together with a range of home designs, state-of-the art facilities and the lakeside Country Club with a walkway to a private island,
Summer House and a network of trails for walking and cycling. Contemporary in form and designed to be climatically responsive, the architecture of the 4040sqm Country Club, which overlooks a tranquil nine-hectare lake, has been inspired and informed by the over-50s lifestyle resort’s spectacular surroundings and the ambition for natural preservation.
GemLife director and CEO Adrian Puljich says the design is testament to the art of architectural innovation, with the Country Club mirroring the masterplanned resort’s multiple recreational hubs with two sprawling pavilions connected by a sweeping roof form. The wing of the Country Club, the Lakeside pavilion, accommodates a huge games room with a lounge area, virtual
golf, wine room with a luxurious adjacent lounge, tenpin bowling alley, cinema, arts studio, library, music room and more. Meanwhile, the Beachside pavilion will be home to a large grand ballroom with dancefloor and stage, a bar and stylish lounge area which overlooks the outdoor pool, in addition to a hair salon, a commercial-grade kitchen, plus consultation and meeting rooms. “Between the two pavilion buildings, under a towering common roof of 8.5m at its highest point, is a spacious open area that serves as a central courtyard,” Mr Puljich says. “This area will be beautifully landscaped to capture green aspects from the interiors, encourage pedestrian connectivity, as well as delivering a blissful sense of connection to the wider environment.” Mr Puljich says the Country Club design not only fosters a vibrant sense of community but also champions an active and health-conscious way of life, perfectly aligning with the lifestyle aspirations catered for at GemLife. There are 83 homes in GemLife Moreton Bay’s Stage One release which is selling fast. For further information, contact GemLife sales manager Samantha Stevens on 0408 571 755.

SUMMERTIME EAR HEALTH Ah, summer – the season of sunshine, beach trips and poolside bliss. While we dive headfirst into these aquatic adventures, there’s one unwelcome guest we’d rather keep at bay: swimmer’s ear. Here’s a quick guide to help you enjoy the water without the worry. 1. Dry ears after swimming: Swimmer’s ear is often caused by trapped moisture in the ear canal. After any aquatic escapades, tilt your head to the side and gently shake it to release excess water. Use a soft, dry towel to pat your ears dry. Avoid using cotton swabs or fingers, as they can push water deeper into the ear.
antibiotics are just not strong enough. Often, only surgery removes the bacteria and the biofilm. Infections are best prevented. There is ever-increasing evidence and techniques to prevent infections with meticulous preparation and surgery. This is done by working with your GP, physicians, anaesthetists, operating theatre team and allied health professionals to optimise your health before surgery, and reduce infection risk during that surgery. sunshinecoastjointsurgery.com.au.
2. Earplugs: Consider investing in quality earplugs designed for swimming. Over-the-counter versions are okay but specialist-made ones work best. 3. Swim caps: If you’re a frequent swimmer, a snug-fitting swim cap can be your best friend. It keeps your ears dry and helps reduce the risk of water getting trapped inside. 4. Ear drops: Over-the-counter ear drops can help prevent swimmer’s ear by drying out excess moisture. A few drops in each ear after swimming can work wonders.
5. Avoid excessive ear cleaning: While it’s essential to maintain good ear hygiene, avoid aggressive cleaning, as it can strip away protective earwax. Stick to gentle cleaning with a washcloth and avoid inserting anything into your ear canal. Remember: prevention is key. With these simple steps, you can enjoy a summer filled with water fun, free from the discomfort of swimmer’s ear. ONE-TRICK PONIES The human body is a one-trick pony because it uses one response to different challenges. A rapidly developing challenge causing damage triggers acute inflammation. Here chemical substances leak from damaged tissue, activating nerves and blood vessels. Nerves send pain signals and relax the muscles in arteries, increasing blood flow. The blood vessels become leaky, causing fluid and the white blood cells of the immune system to enter the tissues. The tissue becomes hot, painful, red and swollen. This is old knowledge: called calor, dolor, rubor and tumor in Latin. Fractures, bleeding, surgery, cancers and allergic reactions can cause acute inflammation. After orthopaedic operations, it is part of normal healing for the surgical site to be warmer, more painful, red and swollen than before surgery, but should steadily improve. Infections also cause inflammation. Bacterial infections in orthopaedics are difficult to diagnose and treat. The bacteria attach themselves to bone and implants, then cover themselves with a protective biofilm. This biofilm is a layer of protein and fat that prevents our immune cells and antibiotics from reaching and killing the bacteria. Oral

ACROSS THE CONTINENT Born on the small island of Seychelles, Ginette grew up with her parents and her 14 siblings. Her father worked on a train in Africa and would tell she and her siblings captivating stories of the country. A highlight of her time on the island was the chapel that stood on her family’s property, where she would work and help out in the school there. The high altitude in Africa was beginning to make her father sick, forcing him to leave his work in Africa and move back to Seychelles. Looking for work, her two brothers moved to Australia, sending a letter back to Seychelles to inform them that not only was there work for her father, but for the women in the family as well. Together, they travelled for four weeks via a large boat, stopping in India before arriving in Sydney. There, Ginette fell in love with the beach and would travel to Manly with her siblings every weekend. “I love Manly. It’s a beautiful place and I love catching the ferry over there,” Ginette says. Her life took a turn when she met the love of her life, Frank, at an Irish club she would frequently visit. Their love blossomed and they had three beautiful

children together. “He was the best man on Earth,” Ginette says. Unfortunately, after 60 years of marriage, Frank has since passed away, leaving behind beautiful memories that Ginette will cherish forever. Now, she resides with her daughter Ginny, enjoying her crosswords and relaxing at home. COSMETIC TATTOOING
SKIN HEALTH
Cosmetic eyebrow tattooing enhance natural features
Vitamin D versus skin cancer risks
Thinning eyebrows is a common concern for many people. Most of the time, this just happens naturally as you get older. Eyebrows start to look sparse due to the natural decline of testosterone (in men) and estrogen (in women) that begins in the 40s. Both of these hormones affect the hair-growth cycle and the structure of the hair follicles. Whether you battle with patchy, thin, natural eyebrows, want to reduce your morning makeup routine or simply want to enhance your natural, beautiful features, cosmetic eyebrow tattoos such as feather brows may be just the solution. With more than seven years of experience and knowledge in eyebrow tattooing, Signature Brows & Beauty owner Sam Holmes believes that everyone is unique and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to cosmetic tattooing. A bespoke service is offered where your brows are designed around your individual facial features and skin tone. Sam is known for her natural tattoo style and was one of the first on the Sunshine Coast to offer the ‘combination’ brow technique. It is her most-popular eyebrow style and is suited to everyone.
How much sun is healthy? Vitamin D is important for the healthy function of many body organs from the bones to the brain and even the skin. We make it in our skin from direct sun exposure. There isn’t enough in our diet. Excess sun, of course, causes melanoma and skin cancer. That’s why Queensland has the highest rates in the world. The advice is that fair to oliveskinned people only need a few minutes of sun exposure to their forearms each day when the UV is over 3. Long exposures don’t help. There is no evidence that using sunscreen affects Vitamin D levels in Queensland. People who are house bound, heavily sun protected, obese or elderly are at risk of low Vitamin D due to insufficient skin production for their needs. SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre staff believe in skin cancer prevention as much as detection and treatment. If you need a thorough check, book with a dedicated skin cancer doctor online at sunlifeskincancercare.com.au or call 5450 9808.

Dry eyes affect five million Aussies
Try non-operative treatments first
Minimally invasive back pain treatment
Dry eye disease (DED) affecting nearly five million Australians, causes discomfort, grittiness and blurry vision, significantly impacting quality of life. The tear film, consisting of fatty oils, watery tears and mucus, maintains eye lubrication. Any imbalance leads to DED. Recent innovations in medications address root causes, enhancing tear production, reducing inflammation and improving tear quality, providing relief and clearer vision. However, for more-complex cases of DED, a new generation of advanced diagnostic tools, such as the MS39 Topographer, is available. This advanced diagnostic tool provides crucial insights into the cornea’s curvature, elevation and refractive power, offering deep insights into corneal health, aiding diagnosis and monitoring and enhancing patient satisfaction. The Tearstim with E-Eye Intense Regulated Pulsed (Polychromatic) Light (IRPL) technology, utilising cutting-edge technology, optimises dry eye treatment, elevating patient quality of life and contributing to improved surgical outcomes. These breakthroughs revolutionise dry eye treatment, offering hope and overall enhanced quality of life. Consult your eye care professional for tailored solutions, including advanced technologies for effective DED management.
Before suggesting surgery to someone suffering with hip or knee osteoarthritis, Sunshine Coast Orthopaedic Group recommends exhausting all non-operative methods of treatment first. These include physiotherapy, weight management, lifestyle modification, medication and potentially injection therapy. A visit to a physiotherapist is also recommended, requesting strengthening and range-of-motion exercises for managing the symptoms of joint pain. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is vitally important. You can also ask your GP to check your BMI and suggest effective methods of weight loss and maintenance, if necessary. It is important to modify the activities you perform if you suffer from joint pain. Choose low-impact activities including walking, swimming and cycling, rather than high-impact activities such as running. A good medication for joint pain is Panadol Osteo (or equivalent), but always check with your GP before commencing any new medications. Injections are available to help treat joint osteoarthritis. Being educated about your condition is important. The Sunshine Orthopaedic Group offers patient education seminars or, alternatively, our orthopaedic surgeons are here to discuss the best course of treatment for you.
Radiofrequency ablation has emerged as a promising technique in managing back and neck pain. This minimally invasive procedure involves targeting specific nerves responsible for pain with a specialised probe emitting radiofrequency energy, effectively disrupting their ability to transmit pain signals. Patients who undergo this procedure for cervical and lumbar spine conditions often experience enhanced comfort during the procedure with light sedation, ensuring minimal discomfort. Radiofrequency ablation occurs as a day surgery, allowing patients to return home on the same day. One of the notable advantages is the potential for long-lasting relief from back and neck pain, often up to six to 12 months. This extended relief period can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals dealing with pain, allowing them to engage in daily activities with reduced discomfort. While individual responses may vary, many patients find radiofrequency ablation to be an effective and minimally disruptive solution, providing a respite from persistent back and neck pain, contributing to a better quality of life. Ask for a referral from your GP if you would like more information.

When helping clients prepare Wills, it is common to receive these instructions: ‘Everything goes to my spouse and then to the kids equally’. The surviving spouse often ends up with the jointly owned assets and superannuation too. When the surviving spouse passes away, are the kids going to get everything in equal shares? Maybe not. One event that may disrupt this common estate plan is when the surviving spouse re-partners. Let’s say, after you pass away, your spouse re-partners or re-marries. A few issues arise: 1. The surviving spouse’s Will is revoked by the marriage. A new Will should be made. 2. If the new Will gives nothing to the new spouse, the new spouse may challenge it. 3. The new Will may include the new spouse as a beneficiary, so the kids won’t get everything equally. 4. The new marriage may not last and assets may be depleted in a Family Law dispute. There are, however, some strategies that can be adopted so the kids don’t miss out – another reason why you should always get advice on your estate plan.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

Tuesday and Wednesday are terrific for being proactive at work. Joint ventures and trust issues are also on the table, but don’t spoil a potentially productive week by being rash. Slow down and think before you speak before you make any important moves.
The sun, Mars and Pluto activate your relationship and aspirations zones. So it’s a good time to snuggle up close with your sweetheart, throw yourself into a creative project or dream up some ambitious goals. Passion and purpose will take you far.
This week the planetary focus is on your daily routine and work zones, but expect some challenging developments and stressful moments. Resist the urge to be argumentative and self-indulgent. Try to ground your airy energy and calm your restless mind.
The sun and Mars join Mercury in your job zone, so you need to reboot your daily routine and be fast and flexible as you plan your future career path. If you have the confidence to listen to your inner voice, then you’ll be one step ahead of the professional pack!
LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)
VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)
LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)
SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)
The sun, Mercury and Mars highlight romance, friendship, socialising, entertaining and networking as you mix and mingle with a wide range of people in a variety of ways. But be careful how you communicate with others on the weekend.
From Monday until Wednesday, communication and conversation are the buzzwords as you share opinions or learn a new skill. It’s definitely a good time to give your brain cells a thorough workout! From Thursday onwards, the focus is firmly on home and family.
Stylishly Librans appreciate quality and luxury, but don’t overdo it or you’ll end up being the most beautiful bankrupt on the block! This week the planets stir up your money/self-esteem zones, so it’s time to get your finances in order and be true to the authentic you.
From Monday until Wednesday, your power planet Pluto makes positive links with the sun and Mars. Which is fabulous for boosting personal charisma and generating creative ideas. Try not to be stubborn and unimaginative about your current options.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)
CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)
AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)
PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)
You’re full of fantastic ideas this week as the sun and Mars charge into your sign, and your sparky energy goes into overdrive. But, if you are too gung-ho and disorganised, then taskmaster Saturn will bring you back down to earth with a thud.
The sun and Mars make positive aspects to Pluto (in your sign) which is great for determination. Which you’ll need in spades because Saturn (your patron planet) then squares the sun and Mars on Thursday and Saturday. So it will be a stop/start kind of week.
As the sun and Mars move into the restless sign of Sagittarius, you’re in the mood for avantgarde adventures and bohemian friendships. But remember there’s a fine line between being spontaneously successful and being hastily foolhardy.
A work issue, volunteer project or education matter is taking up a lot of your time and attention. If you hang in there, it will pay off handsomely in the long run. The sun, Mercury and Mars encourage you to maintain enthusiasm, curiosity and momentum.

REBOUND IN PRICES ‘SOMEWHAT UNEXPECTED’ Research is showing that the largest price increases for properties in the region are for a niche section of the market by the sea. WORDS: Steele Taylor.
T
he property market has experienced a surprising upswing on the Sunshine Coast this year, when more buyers have zeroed in on a specific type of home. Data from PropTrack has revealed that property prices in the region increased 3.3 per cent this year and are 1.6 per cent higher year on year, to the end of September. PropTrack director economic research Cameron Kusher says the figures are unforeseen. “The rebound in prices has been somewhat unexpected,” he says. “It has been mainly driven by low levels of housing stock and a rebound in demand.” Many buyers homed in on a niche section of the market, boosting the value of apartments by the sea. The largest price increases for properties in the region this year were for units in ritzy coastal suburbs such as Alexandra Headland (up 7.3 per cent), Sunshine Beach (up 6.8 per cent), Twin Waters (up 5.5 per cent), Noosa Heads (up 4.7 per cent) and
Mooloolaba (up 3.8 per cent). “The increase in unit prices in these beachfront areas highlights that reduced borrowing capacities are driving buyers to more affordable units, while simultaneously highlighting that buyers are chasing blue-chip locations,” Mr Kusher said. imeless interiors, soaring ceilings, stunning pendant lighting and exquisitely designed wallpaper make this newly finished residence unique. The home is the size of a full house, without the maintenance, and presents with three large bedrooms. The master offers an elegant ensuite and spacious walk-in robe. On the lower level, there is a bonus fourth bedroom with adjoining bathroom or home office. The front façade brings a modern twist to street art, as internationally recognised local artist Robyn Hills has selected her photograph of pandanus trees to feature on the building.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Well, being sick has led me to a new life lesson for men – never go for a number one during a coughing fit, especially if aim is required. If you do, wear swimming goggles. You can thank me later … or not. OK, sadly it’s groundhog day and no good news on the horizon. However, perfect offshore swell is on the way. When? Umm ... maybe a while. Live in your dreams and surf like a pro!
