From the editor

I

can’t believe it’s just over 10 days until the big man in the red suit arrives. I don’t know about you, but for me, Christmas seems to creep up faster every year. While it’s easy to get wrapped up in the commercialism of the silly season – the pressure of buying expensive gifts, spreading yourself thin among family events or creating a culinary masterpiece, it’s important to remember what the true spirit of Christmas is about. In this edition, we catch up with some much-loved local identities for their take on Christmas and how they will spend the big day, as well as their top tips to ensure it’s as stress-free as possible. One thing they all agree on is that spending precious time with loved ones is what matters most. Speaking of Christmas spirit, please remember to support our Adopt a Family campaign. It will make the world of difference to many local families who need it most. There’s no edition next week, but the entire My Weekly Preview team wishes you and yours a safe and joyous Christmas.

AGENDA

Chris Ford’s nifty tips for saving at the checkout this Christmas: 1. Shop around: Different stores can set their own prices for the same item. Before shopping, check the catalogues for discounts that are available. It could even be worth shopping at multiple stores to maximise savings. 2. Avoid the aisle deals: Stores will place deals at the beginning and end of each aisle, but question if you really need these items. If you buy something you don’t need, you aren’t saving money: you’re spending extra. Make a list and check it twice before shopping.

FEAST OF BARGAINS AND NOT-SO-GOOD DEALS But some handy tips will help keep shoppers on track with purchases and to a budget that won’t create a Christmas hangover.

A

ustralians could be forking out up to 70 per cent more on Christmas food this year compared with 2022, new research from Compare the Market has found. As the cost of living crisis rages on, it seems that even the Christmas feast won’t be spared from rising prices and inflation. Compare the Market analysed the price of 16 festive favourites and found that in 69 per cent of cases, prices had increased. Just three items on the list saw a decrease in price, while three also remained the same. It’s particularly bad news for Rudolph and his reindeer friends because carrots,

their favourite snack, has doubled in price. But no matter how high some prices might go, we know many Aussies can’t resist the Christmas pavlova. Packing one of the biggest punches this year is the pricey pav, which increased by a whopping 70 per cent compared with the this time last year. Compare the Market’s Chris Ford says the rising trolley totals are expected due to ‘sticky’ inflation. “It’s a tough time for many households right now, especially after 13 rate rises, increase in the cost of fuel, electricity and living,” he says. “These soaring trolley totals is just the icing on the cake people didn’t need this

3. Use reward cards effectively: If you plan on using reward cards, ensure you ‘boost’ within the apps to maximise the points you can earn. Also, ensure you can use points accrued over the year on your Christmas shop. 4. Resist your temptations: Assess whether you really need the lastminute purchase at the checkout. It could blow out your Christmas budget. 5. Shop alone: Particularly at Christmas time, you want to get in and out without fuss. Shopping solo is usually more effective. You’re less likely to be pressured into buying stuff, especially if shopping with kids. Christmas. While some Christmas costs have increased by just a few dollars, when you have multiple mouths to feed, it really adds up. “If you’re the one getting stuck with the Christmas cooking this year, don’t be alarmed. There are still ways you can save money. The number one way to cut back costs is to shop around. We know different retailers can set varied prices for the exact same product, which is why you should check the stores’ catalogues beforehand.”

Mr Ford urges shoppers to make a list and check it twice before shopping. “You could save significantly if you stick to the list you made. So, get in, get what you need and get out,” Mr Ford says. “If you didn’t get a chance to check out the catalogue for discounts before setting off to the shop, look for the unit price to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. “Remember, ‘eye-level isn’t buy-level’: look on lower or higher shelves for the cheaper items. Don’t just buy what’s right in front of you. You may need to have a harder look to find the most cost-effective price.” Mr Ford says rewards programs can be great but he warns shoppers should be on the hunt for the best prices, regardless of which supermarket chain they visit. “Rewards programs with major supermarket chains are often linked to airlines, so shoppers can exchange their points for flights, hotels, and more. But if you’re spending more on items that are offered cheaper in other stores just for the points, you could really be setting yourself back,” Mr Ford says. “Always check any respective apps to maximise points or see how many points you have and potentially consider cashing in your points to avoid an expensive Christmas lunch. “A difference of a few dollars can really add up – especially if you’ve got a few children or extended family coming for Christmas. Which is why it’s so important to plan ahead, delegate who’s buying what, and browse for the best deals online so that you can relax on the special day.” Mr Ford suggests households keep an eager eye out for discounts and rewards offered by insurance companies or energy retailers to help claw back cash this Christmas.

FAST FACTS

The force is strong

Do you remember?

Did you know? Dogs have been known for the longest time as man’s best friend, but humans are increasingly taking that to a new level. A 2017 study from Rover.com, conducted over three years, found that 54 per cent of dog owners were willing to end a relationship if their pup didn’t like their partner. The study also found that 94 per cent of dog owners considered their dogs to be a part of their family.

Can you imagine a world without Star Wars? That reality could have been a lot closer than we think, as the first film was expected to be a flop. The original 1977 Star Wars: A New Hope had a budget of $8 million, which distributor 20th Century Fox was reluctant to give to director/writer George Lucas. So, he accepted a lower salary in order to keep the budget. The movie went on to make $775 million around the world. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was released in 2017, had a reported budget of $317 million.

By the numbers

The R2-D2 speaks only in beeps and whistles – a robot language that most of his friends can understand. But in the original film draft of Star Wars, written in 1974, R2-D2 spoke in complete sentences. Even more alarming, he was not the lovable goof he would later become. He was a bully, berating his pal C-3PO with insults: “You’re a mindless, useless philosopher” and “You’re nothing more than a dim-witted, emotion-brained intellectual. Why you were created is beyond my logic systems.”

Today in history – December 14 1911 – Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team reach the South Pole, becoming the first men in recorded history to set foot on the most southern point on Earth. 1939 – The Soviet Union is expelled from the League of Nations for making aggressive demands of Finland.

$50 billion Bill Gates has donated more than $50 billion to charity throughout his life.

2000 Germany uncovers 2000 tonnes of unexploded bombs every year.

1961 – Tanzania joins the United Nations. Tanzania was created as a merger of Tanganyika and the Zanzibar Archipelago, both of which were under British rule until independence. 2012 – Adam Lanza shoots and kills 20 children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in the United States.

Two of our most-loved local foodies share their favourite Christmas recipes that are sure to be crowdpleasers among family and friends.

Sweet Marmalade Ham

Martin’s French Toast

Serves 8

Martin’s French Toast is fabulous for a Boxing Day breakfast with extended family. It’s great as an easy breakfast, or trick it up for a quick dessert. Martin’s hot tip is to use goodquality bacon and real Canadian maple syrup.

Ingredients • 1/2 ham on the bone • 150g ham glaze or jar of marmalade • 30 cloves • 24 fresh, plump cherries

Method

Serves 6

Ingredients • 8 eggs • 500ml thickened cream • 1 large Turkish bread loaf

• 12 rashers of bacon (two per person) • cinnamon sugar

1. Preheat oven to 170°C. 2. Remove the outer skin of the ham and reserve (use when storing ham to keep moist). 3. Using a sharp knife, score the fat into diamond shapes. 4. Place the ham on a rack in a roasting tray and brush with glaze (we love Buderim Ginger Marmalade). 5. Pour one cup of water into the roasting pan. 6. Bake the ham for 25 minutes until golden, remove from the oven and set aside. 7. If there is liquid in the base of the pan, place it on the stove and reduce over a medium heat until syrupy. Then pour it over ham before serving. 8. Garnish with cherries before serving.

Method

1. Cook the bacon in an oven or fry pan. 2. Whisk together the eggs and cream. 3. Cut the Turkish bread into slices, roughly 1-1.5cm-thick ( 12 to 14 slices). 3. Place the bread into the egg mix and sprinkle liberally with cinnamon. 4. Melt a little butter in the fry pan and place the bread cinnamon-side down . Then turn over and sprinkle the other side with cinnamon. 6. Cook until golden and serve with bacon and maple syrup. Here are some variations on breakfast or for a quick dessert: Fry banana halves or 1/2 peaches and serve with a dollop of yoghurt/ ice cream, maple syrup and toasted almonds. Replace cinnamon and sprinkle with ginger and nutmeg and serve with poached pear or cooked apple, maple syrup, ice cream and cream.

FEATURE STORY

Christmas is a time of fun, festive food and family traditions. We caught up with four popular locals to discover how they will celebrate this year. They offer some of their top tips on how to enjoy a stress-free day.

Caroline Hutchinson Breakfast announcer, 92.7 MIX FM

Ashley Robinson General manager, Alex Surf Club How will you spend Christmas Day this year? – We will get an early visit from our two grandkids and then I will do the lunchtime patrol at Alex. What will definitely be on your Christmas table? – Prawns for sure and Coopers Sparkling Ale! I grew up with the hot roast lunch, the pudding with the lucky coins in it and mum slaving over a hot stove to feed us and our free-loading relatives from Melbourne. So, we do the exact opposite – simple is good. Do you have any family Christmas traditions? – The lifeguard visit has become a bit of a tradition, trying to look after the people who look after us at Christmas. We have always tried to drop something nice down to the lifeguard on patrol at Wurtulla. What is your top tip on reducing the stress at Christmas time? – Relax, let your family do whatever makes them happy on Christmas day. No pressure. In my view, Christmas is for kids to enjoy themselves and young families to relax and not worry about what anyone else expects them to do.

How will you spend Christmas Day this year? – I have a grandbaby! Baby Rocco is just over three months old and he is the only present we need this Christmas. But my brother and his family will be here from Bendigo, John’s sister and her family will be up from Brisbane and we’ll all have lunch together at home. What will definitely be on your Christmas table? – My mum makes the ham, we do seafood and salads, nachos and fried rice (don’t ask – just weird!). My niece Ava and I will make dessert – probably whatever is in the Coles Christmas magazine. What family traditions do you have? – We always start the day with a swim at Kawana. We go home and put on our Christmas clobber, then drive to Buderim for a champagne with dear friends. The rest is a bit more fluid but always finishes with cocktails and a very raucous game of Stealing Santa. What is your top tip on reducing the stress at Christmas time? – Make a plan for the day as a family, then give everyone a job. If you know what will annoy you – discarded wrapping paper, gifts left on the floor, or people not helping – lay down the law early. Other than that, remember Instagram isn’t real life. Other people’s perfect photos had plenty of tears, tantrums and dry turkey behind the scenes. Smile, tell people you love them, and buy your own present if you think it will help.

Martin Duncan

Kim McCosker

The Sunshine Coast Foodie

Founder/author, 4 Ingredients

How will you spend Christmas day this year? – I’m very excited to have special friends up from Brisbane staying a few days. On the day, we will enjoy a healthy, light breakfast, then set up a beautiful long table. My mum will arrive at 11am and my amazing neighbours at noon. There will be a cocktail or two and then on to feasting. Most probably there will be nana naps from food comas, a movie, popcorn and ice cream.

How will you spend Christmas Day this year? – Christmas Day this year will be a big, festive, family event at our house: a long Christmas-themed table with all the trimmings that everyone contributes to. Everyone gets on famously, so we are all really excited for the big day.

What will definitely be on your Christmas table? – I’ve been craving a sherry trifle with jelly and fruit like my grandma used to make. So, I’ll have a crack at making a huge one. We also love a good pavlova with crunch, fluffy inside and topped with lashings of whipped cream, fresh berries and stone fruit. There will also be Christmas pudding with custard and good vanilla ice cream for my traditional peeps. What family traditions do you have? – We always watch the move Love Actually on Christmas Eve. However, this year Shirley Valentine has been requested. For the last few years, we have enjoyed wicked cocktails and a fun Secret Santa where you steal presents. What is your top tip on reducing the stress at Christmas time? – You don’t need to make it hard on yourself. I like to do buffet style with beautiful salads, fresh seafood and leg ham. Remember to get food back in the fridge asap so you can safely use leftovers for easy entertaining over the holidays.

What will definitely be on your Christmas table? – Christmas ham, glazed with Buderim Ginger Marmalade and cloves: salty, sweet and spicy all in one mouthful is everyone’s favourite. Potato salad, beetroot and feta salad, roast salmon, roast chickens with stuffing balls and roast vegies. My mum’s boiled plum pudding and custard, my mother-in-law’s trifle, and my sister-in law’s pavlova. What family traditions do you have? – There will be the obligatory game of Heads and Tales, with $50 prizemoney for the last person standing. The kids have always loved this start to the day and even now, as adults, they still look forward to it. Also, a sunset cruise on Pumicestone Passage and a karaoke tune or two. What is your top tip on reducing the stress at Christmas time? – Plan ahead. Don’t leave buying things until the day before. Share the load. Everyone wants to contribute, so let them, as there is nothing nicer than being complimented for your contribution. Don’t stress when things go wrong. If you are the host, just roll with it. Most guests are just pleased to be at someone else’s house.

MERRY MAKEOVER

GUEST HAVEN With Christmas just around the corner, chances are that you will find yourself hosting family and friends for a night or two over the holidays. Here, we provide tips on how to refresh your guest room into a sanctuary of comfort.

product alert! Stylish and neutral, the Telbix Ananas table lamp in champagne and cream is from Discount Lighting and Fans, Warana.

Update the bedding Invest in high-quality sheets, plush pillows and a cosy doona. A thoughtful touch, such as a warm throw blanket or decorative cushions, can add luxury and personality to the space. We like the Eve quilt cover set from Kas Australia, which is pictured here. Visit kasaustralia.com.au for local stockists.

Start with the basics A fresh coat of paint can work wonders. Opt for a calming colour palette, such as soft blues or muted greens, to create a relaxed space. These hues not only soothe the senses but also contribute to a restful night’s sleep. Haymes Paint’s Sealock hue, which is pictured here, is a great wall colour.

Thoughtful storage Provide enough space for your visitors to unpack and settle in by incorporating a luggage rack or closet space. Consider placing a full-length mirror in the room to add functionality and create the illusion of more space.

Brighten up Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood. Swap out harsh overhead lights for bedside lamps with warm-toned bulbs. This simple change creates a cosy ambiance – ideal for winding down after a long day of travel.

Brisbane Catholic Education deputy executive director Durm O’Riordan, Notre Dame College principal Dan McShea and Father Josh Whitehead, of Caloundra Catholic Parish

COLLEGE POWERING ON A new school has reached a number of milestones in its journey, as it readies to boost educational facilities at the southern end of the Coast.

E

nrolments are open, construction is about to commence and a foundation principal has been announced for the Sunshine Coast’s newest school. Construction of Stage 1 of Notre Dame College at Bells Creek – for Prep to Year 12 – is starting this month and will continue throughout 2024, ahead of the opening in January 2025. Brisbane Catholic Education executive

director Dr Sally Towns has announced that former Unity College principal Dan McShea will be the foundation principal of the college. “Notre Dame College is our newest flagship Sunshine Coast school in the heart of the growing Aura community,” she says. “Dan McShea is an experienced educator with deep roots in the community.” Mr McShea says he is looking forward

to creating the new Catholic coeducational college. “It’s an honour and an amazing opportunity to lead a Prep to Year 12 school of this magnitude from its inception,” he says. “I could not be happier to be involved in establishing the school’s culture and building a community of excellent educators and school leaders.” Notre Dame College will have the capacity to welcome a cohort of up to 200 students at the beginning of the 2025 school year in Prep, Year 1 to Year 3 and Year 7. The college will welcome 15 school staff initially. It will continue to grow each year to cater for more than 1800 students and employ 280 staff upon completion in 2030. Stage 1 of the college, which is on a 7.9-hectare site on Aura Boulevard, will include five buildings comprising general learning areas and administration block, a sports court and car park. Mr McShea says a temporary school office at Stockland Baringa will become the centre for student enrolment interviews and staff recruitment, prior to school buildings being completed. Visit notredamecollege.qld.edu.au for more information.

FIRST MAYORAL CANDIDATE ON CAMPAIGN TRAIL Television presenter and university lecturer Rosanna Natoli has announced she will run for mayor at the Sunshine Coast local government elections in March. A Coast resident since 1989, Mrs Natoli says her campaign will focus on the needs of the community. “I will fight to maintain our lifestyle and to represent the people,” she says. “I want to make a difference and to give people hope that they have a mayor who cares. “Community consultation needs to be meaningful and set the agenda, not the other way around. I am dedicated to our region and passionate about seeing it grow while protecting our people, our lifestyle, our businesses and our environment.” Her husband Joe Natoli will seek re-election as a councillor in Division 4. “Our family has been passionate about serving this community for decades. We don’t agree on everything, but we will negotiate like all good mayors and councillors,” Mrs Natoli says. Read the full story at our sister site: sunshinecoastnews.com.au.

CHRISTMAS ‘ANGELS’ SEEK FESTIVE FOOD DONATIONS

ADVOCATE FOR BLOOD DONATION LAUNCHES BOOK

The Urban Angels Christmas Hamper Appeal is in full swing again to help those less fortunate this festive season. Urban Angels is a Sunshine Coast charity providing nutritious meals for the community. Nearly 200 volunteers and a small number of staff deliver about 13,000 meals a month. In the lead-up to Christmas, the charity also will be putting together roast dinners for as many people as possible. Coast resident Melanie Ottaway coordinates the hamper drive and has been raising funds for charities in the local area for a number of years. “The gift of giving and being able to bring our community together in a time of crisis is beyond words,” Ms Ottoway says. “I feel like I said the same thing last year. It’s been a rough few years on the Coast and we can all make a difference.” Donations are still being accepted for the hampers, with Ninderry MP Dan Purdie offering his office as a donation drop-off point. The hampers include canned soup, salmon, tuna and fruit, nut trail mixes and snacks, tea and coffee, long-life milk, condiments and spreads, plus plum pudding to go with the roast dinners.

Following the success of the Milkshakes for Marleigh podcast and being recognised at the 2023 International Women Changing the World Awards in London, blood donation advocate Kate Fisher is releasing her first book. Ms Fisher is a fierce blood-donation advocate and thanks the blood donors who have kept her seven-year-old daughter Marleigh alive. The Milkshakes for Marleigh book is a collection of extraordinary tales of survival, thanks to Australian blood donors. Ms Fisher is on a mission to end persistent critical blood shortages in Australia and around the world, given the statistics that one-in-three Australians will need blood in their lifetime, but only one in 30 donate. She says it can be challenging to create change in the world, and calls on others to think about how they can make a difference. “As storyteller and changemaker, I’ve made a creative solution to a social problem,” Ms Fisher says. “I hope that by bridging the gap of anonymity between blood donors and their recipients, people will be reminded

MP Dan Purdie and Melanie Ottaway Ms Ottaway says residents don’t need to go out and spend money, and may even have a few extra in-date items in their pantry to donate. Donations can be dropped off at 11 Heathfield Road, Coolum Beach, or directly to Urban Angels at Unit 4, 27 Service Street, Maroochydore.

of the importance of blood d donation and make it a lifelong priority to be a blood donor.” Ms Fisher will have copies of the book available for purchase and signing at Annie’s Bookstore, Peregian Beach, at 10 am on December 17. The book will be available in stores in January.

See what’s coming to Mooloolaba’s fabulous foreshore Enhanced beachfront parkland will heighten the amenity and improve access for everyone.

T

his is your chance to see how the much-loved Mooloolaba Foreshore will look after a stunning transformation. A new fly-through video for the next stage of the foreshore project has just been released, featuring the latest concept images of Mooloolaba’s reimagined Central Meeting Place. Sunshine Coast Council is revitalising the Mooloolaba Foreshore, enhancing public beachfront parkland by 40 per cent and making the beach more accessible for all. This next step of the foreshore’s revitalisation represents a multimilliondollar investment by Council and the Federal Government in

Mooloolaba’s future. This includes a $7.95 million contribution through the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund to replace Mooloolaba’s seawall. A new seawall will help safeguard the community from rising sea levels and more extreme weather events into the future. The construction contract for Stage 2 work remains in the tender phase. Council will share timing and further details with the community and local business operators once the tender phase is completed. Works are expected to start mid-2024. Council’s Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox encourages the community to watch the

video to see the ‘shared vision’ for Mooloolaba that has been guided by the community through extensive consultation. “It’s exciting to see our shared vision for Stage 2 of the revitalised Mooloolaba Foreshore taking shape, delivering on those things our community told us they valued most,” Cr Cox says. Hello everyone, From boosting our economy to a recycling revolution and preserving precious ecosystems, 2023 was certainly a groundbreaking year for the Sunshine Coast. Our region saw the launch of an Action Plan to respond to the housing and homelessness crisis, a global business lured from New York and the starter’s gun fired on projects being created for our community from our involvement in the Olympic and Paralympic Games Brisbane 2032. At Sunshine Coast Council’s 2023 State of our Region event, I was proud to outline many achievements and memorable moments, alongside some of our inspirational community champions. This year has seen enormous gains made for our community. Our region now has a much stronger and resilient economy with a clear blueprint for its future, generating investment and employment opportunities that allow people to work closer to home and enjoy higherpaying jobs. Council has brought people together for award-winning events, created safer and more accessible recreation and sporting facilities and enhanced our national and international reputation as the Sunshine Coast Biosphere. SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL PROMOTION

Take energy saving out of the too-hard basket These simple tips can help slice hundreds of dollars off your bills and find the best plan to suit.

WHY CHILDREN NEED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND PET BEHAVIOUR Our social media feeds are full of cute snaps of children innocently embracing their furry pals. We all love hugs, right? This isn’t the case for our pet dogs. They can feel trapped and stressed, making them more likely to react negatively. Many children are unaware of this, highlighting the importance of providing opportunities for them to learn how to interact with pets safely and positively. This includes recognising dog-behaviour cues such as avoiding eye contact and yawning when anxious. Council is focused on supporting the youngest members of our community in co-existing with pets safely and confidently. Its education program caters for preschoolaged children through to upper primary. The program includes Santa-paws approved books: the Sammy and Sunny book series. These two heart-warming stories of adventure, emotion and perseverance will be enjoyed by all animal-loving children, while teaching them how to be responsible for their pets. Pick up a copy for $14.95 at one of Council’s customer contact centres or Caloundra Regional Gallery. Learn more at Council’s website sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

t’s that time of year when everyone is home and temperatures are climbing, which means energy bills tend to do the same. Council’s Living Smart website helps making energy saving at Christmas and throughout the year a breeze, with a range of guides, articles and info to help your bottom line. Energy bills One of the first steps to saving on your bill is checking if you’re with the right provider. In 2022, the Australian Energy Market Commission found the difference between the cheapest and most expensive energy plan in Queensland was $1211. With so many retailers and plans to

choose from and with most large comparison sites only showing select retailers, you could be missing out on smaller, possibly more-competitive companies. Using an independent and impartial comparison site will ensure you’re comparing the whole market, providing you with the cheapest deal for your situation. Top tips • Understanding and then changing your energy tariff could be a pathway to cheaper bills.

• Knowing when you use your energy and how much you use will ensure you are served plans tailored to your situation. • If you signed up or switched providers during a promotional period, are you still on that rate? • Include the value of your solar generation in your calculation to avoid being blinded by shiny feed-in tariffs. Visit livingsmartqld.com.au for guides, articles and resources to help you make the best decisions.

‘CREATIVE OASIS’: FIRST LOOK AT SEASIDE TOWN’S NEW HEART Residents and visitors to Caloundra can look forward to the family-tourism favourite gaining a new “heart’’. Concept drawings and the inspiration behind the transformational town square project have been revealed, providing a glimpse into the town’s bright future. This will be a crucial element of the Caloundra Community + Creative Hub that will create a unique public space connecting The Events Centre, new

Library+, proposed Sunshine Coast regional gallery and parks and streets through to picturesque Bulcock Beach. Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg says the Community + Creative Hub has been designed as a place where arts, community and creativity come alive. The design followed extensive input from locals. COMMUNITY NEWS

Matt Stoeckel, Visit Sunshine Coast CEO

Cr Christian Dickson Division 6

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY WITH THE CRUISE SEASON

Western link road for Harmony With great excitement, I’d like to share that the Palmview link to the Bruce Highway service road opens today, December 14. Many locals, including me, have been raring to see this link, which was required by the State Government, open for improved travel times and emergency access to the Harmony estate. After many incidents, including floods and fires in recent years, this highway access has become more important than ever. Planning is already underway for the third road link from Peter Crosby Way to Caloundra Road.

Road repairs and reseals We’ve had a whole swag of local streets repaired and resealed lately, including Karawatha Street, Braemar Road, Pensey Court and Linder Place. I’m determined to see good-quality local roads on the Sunshine Coast and feel Sunshine Coast Council is in a good place to respond quickly to make any fixes. As always, if you see a road that needs attention, let me know and I’ll get it

reviewed by the council. Some state government roads in the area, such as Crosby Hill Road at Buderim, need significant repairs and I’ve passed this on.

Merry Christmas I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for a wonderful year in our communities. I’ve found people to be engaged and helpful in resolving challenges and making our division a great place to live. I wish you and your family a merry Christmas and some rest over the holiday season, and I’m looking forward to serving you in 2024. Email Christian.Dickson@sunshine coast.qld.gov.au and follow my Facebook page @CouncillorDickson for updates.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas … and Sunshine Coast businesses are riding the festive wave in the lead-up to our busiest time of the year. Part of this is that we’ve already welcomed the first cruise ship stopover of the summer season with the Viking Orion bringing around 930 passengers on the first weekend of December. More than 600 of the passengers took the opportunity to see crocs, koalas and other native animals at Australia Zoo. Tomorrow (pending favourable conditions from the weather gods) the Star Breeze will bring more passengers to our shores. All up, we’ll have close to 3000 cruise ship passengers this summer alone stopping in to enjoy a taste of the Sunny Coast. We always make sure they receive a warm welcome from our Visit Sunshine Coast staff and volunteers who greet them on arrival and help the passengers make the most of their time ashore. It’s well worth our time as these cruises provide an estimated $1 million

boost to our economy each year. And what’s more, the research shows that these folk are also likely to return to the region at a later date to see all the places they couldn’t get to in just one day. That’s a Christmas gift that keeps on giving for the whole region. Who’s coming this summer: • Star Breeze (up to 312 passengers), Friday, December 15 • Seven Seas Explorer (up to 809 passengers), Tuesday, December 19 • Regatta (up to 675 passengers), Sunday, December 24 • Silver Whisper (up to 388 passengers), Friday, February 16 • Viking Sky (up to 930 passengers), Sunday, February 18 • Viking Orion (up to 930 passengers), Friday, March 1 • Azamara Onward (up to 670 passengers), Thursday, March 4 • Amera (up to 835 passengers), Friday, March 8.

and subsequent victimisation in the community. The state conference featured informative sessions covering topics such as psychology, self-care for participants, Duke of Edinburgh course content, information exchange database training, the unveiling of the 2024 training manual and a celebratory conference dinner. “It’s been great to get together with Project Booyah representatives from across the state and hear everyone’s

unique challenges and achievements,” Acting Superintendent Rob Fleischer says. “We’re constantly evolving the course content to adapt to the ever-changing environment that is youth engagement and development. To witness 83 young people finish the course with new skills, new friends and a new-found hope for the future is the reason Project Booyah was first established.” Find out more at projectbooyah.com.au.

EARLY INTERVENTION FOR AT-RISK YOUTH PROVES TO BE A SUCCESS The Sunshine Coast recently hosted 57 members from 11 locations across Queensland for the Project Booyah State Conference. Hosted by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Police-Citizens Youth Clubs, the December 5 conference aimed to provide a platform to share successes and reflect on accomplishments. This semester, 83 young people are expected to graduate after 16 weeks with

Project Booyah: a QPS-led early intervention and community inclusive initiative. Project Booyah engages at-risk or disengaged youth through mentoring, education programs, vocational scholarships and connections to employment opportunities. Its mission is to address disengagement from family, community and education while working to reduce the young people’s likelihood of offending

ARIES (MAR 21 - APR 19)

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Mercury is reversing through your career/reputation zone, so make sure you behave yourself at the office Christmas party. You also need to think twice about posting controversial comments online (especially about work or colleagues).

This week Jupiter (which is transiting through your sign) makes a positive connection with Mercury, which favours communication, education and productive work. But remember Mercury is in retrograde mode so results won’t be instant.

You’re in the mood to let your hair down and party but don’t accept things at face value. With Mercury reversing through your mystery zone, look beneath the surface to discover what’s really going on. Saturn encourages you to choose gifts that are practical and useful.

When it comes to work, habits, health and fitness, the more proactive and organised you are, the better the results will be. However, with Mercury retrograde, a lack of direction and diplomacy could temporarily sidetrack relationships and confuse you.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)

VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)

LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)

SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)

Curious Jupiter and adventurous Uranus are charging through your career zone, so it’s time to stretch yourself in exciting new professional directions. Mercury is reversing through your work zone, so you need to plan thoroughly before you launch new projects.

Courtesy of retro Mercury, you can’t escape close relationships this week. Don’t approach things with the same old stale attitude – it’s time to recalibrate. The more positive energy and hard work you pour into partnerships, the more beneficial they will be.

The opposition between your ruler, Venus, and Uranus is exact on Tuesday. So the challenge is to get the balance right between your independence and the needs of loved ones. An impulsive online spending spree could see you full of regrets later in the week.

Many Scorpios are primed for parties and other celebrations as sociable Venus transits through your sign until December 29. So it’s time to shmooze, shimmy, sparkle and shine. But on Thursday a loved one could hit you with some surprise news.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)

PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)

The sun and Mars are charging through your sign, so you’re raring to bust out of your comfort zone as you travel and experiment. But retrograde Mercury also moves into Sagittarius, so prudence and patience will take you further than spontaneity and speed.

With Mercury retrograding through Capricorn until Saturday (when it reverses back into Sagittarius), it’s time to reflect, reconsider and re-evaluate. It’s also a good week to inspire those around you in positive, powerful, long-lasting ways.

The Venus/Uranus opposition suggests a family fiasco, uninvited guests or some other domestic drama. Some Aquarians could experience disruptions at work. Whatever happens, strive to get the balance right between your public and your private lives.

This week the sociable sun and proactive Mars are both charging through your career zone. Fire up the festive charm as you party with work colleagues and improve relations with clients or customers. It’s also time to fire up your Piscean diplomacy skills.

MY OPINION

THE HOMEGROWN FOOD PEOPLE

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR

Jane Stephens recommends shopping a little closer to home this Christmas and taking advantage of the freshly baked, grown and crafted goods.

Ashley Robinson knows the true joy of making Christmas fun for children and doing something nice for others this time of year.

I

t seems we have been duped. Shoppers most often opt to spend their hard-earned dollars at the giant supermarkets because of the convenience and bulk-buying price advantage. But now the federal government says Coles and Woolies are not the community benefactors their warm and fuzzy ads lead us to believe. Both companies recorded profits over $1 billion this year, and the Senate is expected to establish an inquiry in 2024 into price gouging. The contention is that they work together like pack dogs on the hunt, nipping at heels and corralling until they bring farmers and consumers to heel. The federal government last week chipped them for keeping red meat prices too high, and we all know what they did to the poor dairy farmers in forcing milk prices through the floor. All will be revealed in the inquiry, no doubt, but I reckon this Christmas is the prime time to ramp up our focus on shopping at local butchers, bakers and candlestick makers. Times are really tough: the cost of living is biting and while this is the season to be jolly, prices and demands are

making some of those smiles a bit more like winces. But along with keeping things a bit simpler this year, the answer is surely to try to look closer. Home is where the heart is, as they say. On the Sunshine Coast, we have glorious baked, grown and crafted goods at farmers’ markets. Our little independent shops tend to stock creative pieces made by locals’ hands. We have seafood just off our coast. Economists say the inflated prices set by the supermarkets are influenced by increased theft and with an eye on the competition. Even if we find ourselves in the aisles of the twin supermarket giants, we should remember that as consumers, we have a great deal of power. If there is an absence of local produce and products, ask store management for them. Show that it matters to us as a community to look out for our own. We know the profits of the big supermarkets are sheer, entrenched greed. Foraging and gathering a bit closer to home in the lead-up to Christmas this year will stem that at least a little. Small actions can have a big impact, particularly when we work together.

Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.

A

s we charge into the festive season with just over a week to go before the big guy in the red suit lobs, personally it is quite thought provoking of what it all means. I was walking George the dog the other night and just as we went past a house that had all things lit up for Christmas, I saw a shooting star. It was a whopper and fell right in front of us. So, my first thoughts were: what do I wish for? What it actually made me do was think about how my dad Len managed to provide for us – particularly me, as I was a demanding, fat little kid. I remember at one school break-up, someone asked my dad how come we never got that new tractor he had been talking about. He simply replied: “We ate it.” He could have said we had no money and had to live, but he just left it to the imagination of those around us. In saying that, I can’t remember going without anything. I am sure my parents did, but I was oblivious to it. But I do think Old Mate and I learnt from both sets of parents that same lesson: make sure the kids enjoy Christmas.

My most vivid memory of a Santa gift was when Dragster bikes came out. I just had to have one. I reckon I carried on about it for months leading up to Santa coming. It must have driven my parents mad – my misguided strategy. So, on the big day, it arrived: a bright purple bike with a basket on the front and streamers on the handlebars. One short, fat and happy kid. Sure, we never had a washing machine or a hot water system, but I had a purple bike. It didn’t particularly like dirt roads but hey, I was happy. A bit like when we became parents and couldn’t afford a concrete driveway for years but the kids mostly got what they wanted. That is parenting sometimes: we need to prioritise the fun stuff. So, as I watched the falling star disappear in front of me, I didn’t wish for a million dollars, a new car, a world trip or the like. I wished for health, happiness and a fulfilling life for family and friends, which I reckon is all we really need and way better than even a Dragster bike. Have a great Christmas and do something nice for someone who needs it, because the gift is definitely in the giving.

MY OPINION

ADD A LITTLE RIZZ TO FESTIVE FUN Sami Muirhead spells out the process Oxford English Dictionary boffins used in choosing the 2023 Word of the Year. the English-speaking world. The selection, Oxford says, is meant “to reflect the ethos, mood or preoccupations” of the preceding year, while also having “potential as a term of lasting cultural significance”. Usually, Oxford’s lexicographers assemble a shortlist of words or expressions that have seen a statistically relevant surge, and then choose a winner. But in recent years, Oxford has turned the selection process into the lexicographical version of a reality show. Last year, Oxford let the public vote on three finalists. Goblin mode – a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations – came out on top. It’s like hurkle-durkle: to lay in bed long after you should have got up. This year, the public was invited to cut the shortlist in half by weighing in on four head-to-head thematic pairings (some 30,000 people voted). Oxford’s team then made the final selection. So it’s time to shirk work and hurk the dirk and razzle your rizz. Okay ... sorry for trying to act cool when I really just want to go back to eating fruit mince pies and drinking my port.

was eating my fruit mince pie and sipping my port last night when I read with interest the Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year. Okay, I really just wanted another chance to bang on about how obsessed I am with fruit mince pies. They are my very favourite food at this time of the year and those plump circles of raisins bring me extraordinary amounts of happiness. My younger friends also make me sound old. Fruit mince pies are ‘old people food’, apparently. Back to the word of the year and it is ‘rizz’. Rizz is a word young people use as slang for style, charm and attractiveness or the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner. That spawned a crush of memes, as overall usage surged by a factor of about 15 over the previous year, Oxford’s data showed. Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford Languages, the dictionary division, says that this year’s choice reflects the way social media has increased the pace of language change exponentially. Plus, he says, the word simply has … rizz. Oxford’s Word of the Year is based on usage evidence drawn from its continually updated corpus of more than 22 billion words, gathered from news sources across

1. Preheat the barbecue or char grill pan. 2. In a mortar and pestle, crush oregano leaves with some coarse salt until you have a paste-like consistency. Then add olive oil, a pinch of smoked paprika, and lemon juice. Stir until it emulsifies. Add salt and pepper. 3. Butterfly the prawns, using scissors. Cut the underside of the prawn and its head in half. Then run a sharp knife through where you made the cut with the scissors, making sure not to cut through the shell. 4. Drizzle olive oil onto the flesh of the prawns. Place prawns flesh side down, pressing down with a weight such as a pan or a tray to prevent them from curling. Cook for 2-3 minutes, and then flip onto their shell side to cook for a further few three or four minutes. Once prawns are cooked, transfer them to a plate and drizzle oregano dressing on top.

T’S only a short flight of just over two hours, but Norfolk Island is a new world of peace in the Pacific.History, culture and natural beauty collide at Norfolk, which may be small in size but is big in attractions – from steep ocean clifftops and patches of sub-tropical rainforest to convict ruins and Norfolk pines. And it’s a bonus that travellers don’t need a passport or visa. Fly from the international terminal as a domestic traveller to the Australian territory in the Pacific, 1500km east of Brisbane. Paul Brockhurst, of CT Travel, has planned an eight-day tour from March 19

next year that has Norfolk covered. “Unpack and settle in at the beautiful Paradise Hotel and Resort in the township of Burnt Pine, which is a perfect base to head out and discover Norfolk,” he says. “Then head out on the Discover Our World tour, which introduces the island and sets the scene.” Visit Out Yenna: the luxurious hideaway of best-selling author of 24 books, Colleen McCullough (The Thorn Birds sold 30 million copies globally), who lived on Norfolk for 36 years with her husband Ric Robinson. Pitcairn Settlers Village, one of the last-remaining original settlers’ properties,

shows what life was like for the Pitcairners and their descendants. The panoramic painting Cyclorama never fails to impress as the 360-degree perspective brings to life the Bounty mutiny and the history of the Norfolk Island people. The Gardeners’ Delight Tour is a journey behind the scenes of Bounty mutineer descendants, with four gardens – each a labour of love. A progressive dinner is a chance to meet the locals who welcome visitors into their homes to hear stories about island life while enjoying a threecourse dinner. The clifftop Forresters Court overlooks

Cascade Bay and is the ideal location for high tea. Also dine on an Island Fish Feast under the stars on the western side of the island where, perched on the clifftop above Anson Bay, there’s an eagle’s view of the crescent-shaped beach and the ocean stretching to the horizon. Wander through the markets or attend a local church service on Sunday morning, then take the Convict Kingston Tour to hear about the first settlers, the Polynesians who arrived 900 years ago, and the facts and legends. The Norfolk Island capital, historic Kingston, has St Barnabas Chapel built from the ruins of the New Gaol. The Norfolk Today tour is an informative opportunity to learn how life is made possible on this tiny South Pacific island. This behind-the-scenes tour introduces locals who will be happy to tell how Norfolk plays a role in the worldwide weather monitoring and includes a visit to the community radio station. Walk the plank for a glass-bottomed boat tour, with descendants of the mutineers giving a commentary while en route to the coral gardens and tropical fish on the reef in the crystal calm waters of Norfolk’s lagoon. Last stop is the Bounty Museum, an Aladdin’s cave of inspiring stories which start in 1788, and memorabilia from the Bounty. Visit cttravel.com.au.

I have just returned from a week in Singapore and although a frequent visitor as a stopover to Europe or other destinations, I had not stayed for this length of time previously. Personally, I was impressed in Singapore as a destination. Singapore has transformed itself from a mere stopover point to a captivating destination that attracts travellers from around the world. This tiny island city-state in Southeast Asia has managed to become a vibrant and cosmopolitan hub with an array of unique experiences to offer. One of the key reasons Singapore is now a destination is its rich cultural diversity. The city boasts a harmonious blend of different ethnicities, including Chinese, Malay, Indian, and many others, resulting in a kaleidoscope of traditions, festivals, and cuisines. From the colorful streets of Little India to the bustling Chinatown and the Arab Quarter, visitors can immerse themselves in the various cultures that coexist in Singapore. Singapore has invested heavily in creating iconic landmarks and attractions that draw tourists year-round. The Marina Bay Sands, with its striking rooftop infinity pool and breathtaking skyline views, has become a symbol of modern Singapore.

Gardens by the Bay, with its innovative Supertree Grove and indoor Cloud Forest, showcases the city’s commitment to sustainable architecture and green spaces. The city’s dedication to preserving its history and heritage is also evident in places like the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the National Museum, and the Peranakan Museum. These institutions offer insights into the country’s past and evolution. Singapore’s thriving culinary scene is yet another reason why it is now a destination in itself. Furthermore, Singapore has not only catered to tourists but has also embraced its natural surroundings and provides a perfect escape for families and adventure seekers alike. ALEXA’S ON THE ROAD TO GLORY

A

talented athlete who spent two weeks in a coma because of a harrowing cycling accident has her sights on next year’s Paris Games, after scooping two major awards. Noosa’s Alexa Leary was crowned Emerging Athlete of the Year at the AIS Sport Performance Awards in Melbourne recently. She was also recognised as the AIS Discovery of the Year at the Swimming Australia awards, after a remarkable victory in the 100m freestyle at the Para World Championships at Manchester in August. The 22-year-old has had an aweinspiring journey, overcoming a traumatic cycling accident and a brain-trauma injury that derailed her path to Olympic

triathlon success. “It has been a challenging road,” she says. “I am proud of my achievements. It would not have been possible without my family and amazing support network. I cannot thank them enough. “Look out, Paris.” Leary has overcome significant obstacles in her life. A promising elite athlete, her world changed during a routine training ride on the Sunshine Coast in July 17, 2021, when her front wheel clipped the bike in front at 70kmh. The accident left her in a coma for two weeks and hospital for 111 days. It was a miracle she survived. The Leary family, restricted by COVID-19 protocols, rallied around her

during those dark days. From Royal Brisbane Women and Children’s Hospital to the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital, her path to recovery was arduous but fuelled by an unyielding determination. She emerged from the shadows, defying the limitations imposed by her brain trauma. Her journey, marked by intense physical and cognitive therapy, was a testament to her resilience and support of family, friends and the community. Securing gold for Australia in the 100m freestyle (S9) at the Para World Championships was a colossal milestone only two years after her accident. She now looks toward Paralympic glory in Paris.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) continues to have a positive impact on the lives of participants, their families and carers, with recent data highlighting greater community inclusion and participation. The NDIS is now supporting more than 630,000 participants, including 23,803 who entered in the previous quarter (to 30 September 2023), with participant outcomes data in the latest Quarterly Report demonstrating the positive impacts being delivered by the scheme. More than three-quarters of all participants aged over 15 years reported greater choice and control in their lives, exceeding the 2023-24 target. A total of 42 per cent of participants aged 15 years and older reported increased participation in community and social activities – a relative increase of seven per cent. Participation in work has more than doubled from 10 per cent to 22 per cent for participants aged 15 to 24. Half of all parents and carers are now reporting paid employment, reaching the 2023-24 target of 50 per cent. This is a relative increase of over eight per cent since last quarter. NDIA CEO Rebecca Falkingham acknowledged the progress the scheme continues to make, and the need for constant improvement, in consultation with the disability community. “This participant data reinforces the significant impact the scheme is having on people with disability every day, in allowing them to participate in their community in more ways than ever before – whether that be through education, work or daily activities,” Ms Falkingham says.

Want to support young adults living with a disability and autism this Christmas? Bring your gifts to our dedicated wrapping station at Sunshine Plaza Level 1 from 1st to 24th December, where our volunteers will get your presents ready to go under the tree. All proceeds will be donated to STEPS Pathways College.

PAINTING A FINE PICTURE OF HER INDEPENDENCE

JP’S ON A ROLL WITH SPORTING WHEELIES

Meet Barbara, who is an exceptional artist at Suncare. Despite embarking on her painting journey at 29, art runs deep in her family, tracing back to her renowned greatgrandfather. Although a ‘late bloomer’, the painting journey doesn’t end there. This artistic legacy continues through generations, culminating in Barbara’s five children inheriting the creative mantle. In 2022, Barbara achieved acclaim by winning the Judge’s Choice award for a painting that was entered into a competition. This masterpiece now graces a calendar and within a published artistry book, sharing its beauty with a wider audience. Although Barbara did not grow up in the outback, her preferred painting subjects include horses, western farmhouses and the expansive bush landscape. Barbara’s art elicits diverse reactions, yet a common theme unites them all: admiration. Her creations, filled with the spirit of the outback, resonate with audiences. Through her talent, she not only carries forward a family tradition but also enriches the artistic landscape of the outback, leaving a lasting mark on the

Brisbane’s Jean-Paul (‘JP’) is kicking goals in health, movement and social connection, thanks to the sport of boccia. After being introduced to the sport (similar to bocce) by his social worker, JP joined the Sporting Wheelies Inclusive Sports program and hasn’t looked back. The Inclusive Sports program gives participants aged six and over the chance to try a range of accessible sports such as wheelchair basketball, boccia, wheelchair rugby and goalball. Participants can experience many benefits such as improved physical health, increased mobility, learning new skills and making new friends. JP joined the program 11 years ago and chose to focus on boccia after becoming hooked during a try-out day. He says he was immediately taken with the precision and competitive nature of the sport. “I saw first hand the valuable impact the sport and community had on people just like me. Boccia introduced me to social engagement, a new sport and Sporting Wheelies to improve and maintain my physical wellbeing,” JP says. “This helps me to remain independence and live an active, healthy

world of art. Now enjoying retirement in a village, Barbara dedicates most days to practising her art in a studio in her home. She has also dedicated a room to showcasing her wonderful paintings, which she calls ‘the gallery’. Tuesdays find her at the local hall, engaged in painting classes with fellow enthusiasts. She actively participates in a monthly art gallery hosted by the hall, providing a platform for artists to showcase and sell their works, creating a vibrant community in a safe, supported environment”. life. Boccia is also a highly competitive sport at the Paralympic level which very much appealed to me.” Goal setting is something JP has practised throughout his adult life. One of his NDIS goals is to build global strength and mobility to ensure he can live independently for as long as possible. “I have muscular dystrophy (FSH): a genetic condition that causes progressive wasting of the muscles. It’s important that I exercise to keep my body physically and mentally strong,” JP says. Boccia is helping JP to achieve his social and community participation and general health goals. PROPERTY

QUEENSLAND PROPERTY STAYS IN GOOD SHAPE But the REIQ says the shortage of sales listings is making prospective sellers reluctant to make the jump to their next home.

T

rim listings, taut supply and terrific lifestyle – the latest median sales results released by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) shows property across the Sunshine State stayed in good shape over the September 2023 quarter (July – September 2023). Statewide price movements crept up steadily, with median house prices lifting by 2.07 per cent over the quarter to $690,000, and median unit prices rising by 3.92 per cent to $530,000. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says Queensland property is undeniably a good, consistent performer and continued to be an alluring and reliable ‘bricks-and-mortar’ buy. “Unit price growth seems to be awakening from a long slumber, as people adjust their expectations and use them as stepping stones into the housing market,” she says. “It’s not surprising that units are gaining popularity due to their relatively affordable price point, when budget-conscious buyers are wary of rising interest rates and cost of living. When once upon a time you could

find more affordable free-standing houses to buy around the half-a-million dollarmark with a reasonable commute to the city, we’re now hearing that first-home buyers are turning to apartments and units instead. “For instance, Greater Brisbane’s unit market continues to go from strength to strength, representing great value and growth in good proximity to the state capital. Logan’s unit market, in particular,

was a standout with 9.17 per cent growth over the quarter, and a solid 11.11 per cent growth over the year to $350,000.” Ms Mercorella says that interest in regional Queensland’s housing market is rising as a relatively affordable choice and, in most cases, with attractive annual growth. “Those seeking value for money are finding it in our regional economic powerhouses: Toowoomba and Townsville,” she says. “You’re looking at an annual median house price of $530,000 in Toowoomba and just over $400,000 in Townsville – well below Greater Brisbane’s $760,500 median price point.” Ms Mercorella says the shortage of sales listings has become somewhat of a Catch-22 situation in the Sunshine State. “The biggest challenge at the moment is people’s reluctance to sell and make the jump to their next property,” she says. “Real estate agents are telling us that people do want to sell their properties, but they’re also held back by concerns about what they are going to be able to buy back into in such a tight market. So, it’s a frustrating situation for so many.”

Ms Mercorella acknowledges there has been a few small dips over the quarter, as well as some prices retreating slightly when comparing year to year, but says it is important to remember we are coming off record-setting highs. “It’s not really comparing apples with apples when trying to draw parallels with a particularly remarkable period of time in real estate,” she says. “We are back to a consistent, ‘steady as she goes’ market which means there will be some expectation management needed for both sellers and buyers. “On one hand, sellers may need to temper their expectations somewhat from the crazy highs, but equally, buyers who had hoped a bargain was just around the corner will be sorely disappointed as the shortage of stock is keeping the competition hot. Interstate migration and a tight job market are helping to underpin the housing market. “Queensland property has shaped up to its age-old reputation as a consistent, reliable player, and we expect to see more of the same steady growth as we bring in the new year.”

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
