My Style Dress for a romantic interlude this Valentine’s Day.

From the editor Our feature story this week is confronting, but it’s also very much a story of hope. I’m talking about child sex trafficking and those at the coalface who are determined to make a difference. Founded and based on the Sunshine Coast, Destiny Rescue is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to rescue children from exploitation, and runs programs to ensure those rescued stay free. It has now reached a milestone of 14,500 rescues since its inception in 2001 – an extraordinary effort. Journalist Linda Read caught up with the CEO of Destiny Rescue to discover more about the incredible work, what the organisation plans for the future and how we can all help to keep these children safe. In lighter news, we also deliver some great places to eat, drink and play in our Local Eats feature. Plus, with Valentine’s Day around the corner, we share top tips from a relationship expert on how to send all the right signals to make a lasting first impression. Until next week, enjoy the read. AGENDA

KEY INTERCHANGE UPGRADE IN LIMBO House resumptions and early works had begun but a $320m road project’s future remains uncertain. Words: Steele Taylor.

T

he state government says a proposed overhaul of one of the Sunshine Coast’s busiest interchanges is still high on its agenda but it can’t say how, when or even if it will be completed. Plans for Stage 1 of the Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade (MRIU) were cast into disarray in November, when the federal government announced it would essentially withdraw a $160 million

commitment towards it. The decision came after early works were undertaken and properties were marked for resumption. It left a large part of the region’s road transport future in limbo, ahead of a population boom and the 2032 Olympic Games. The $320 million project was initially expected to be funded 50:50 by the state and federal governments. A Department of Transport and Main

Roads spokesperson says the state government has not given up on the proposal, but it does not know how it will be paid for. “While the Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade (Stage 1) remains a priority for the Queensland government, project cost and funding contributions for Stage 1 are subject to further consideration and negotiation,” they say. The MRIU was expected to ease traffic congestion and provide more efficient travel to and from the heart of the region. A spokesperson for transport advocacy group Rail Back on Track, Jeff Addison, says traffic woes could be significantly alleviated if planned rail projects were fully funded and completed in a timely manner. He says it is a shame that plans for the MRIU ground to a halt after works had started and it could lead to “more gridlock and commute times”. But he believes projects such as the Direct Rail Sunshine Coast Line (DSCRL) and the Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) rail upgrade are more pressing. “It is always disappointing when funding is withdrawn from any projects on the burgeoning Sunshine Coast, especially when part-way through active site works and building demolitions upon prior resumed properties,” he says. “But as a rail and public transport advocacy group, our focus is on the lack of rail and the abysmal rail services to the region. “Clearly, given that it (the MRIU) had $320 million joint state and federal funding, it was needed. Our preference is for the much-needed and priorpromised 37km rail from Beerwah to Maroochydore (DSCRL) to be built as soon as possible as a first priority.”

He says the state government has a “topsy-turvy approach”, favouring road over rail. “We need to do the rail first and then assess the roads situation, not the other way around,” Mr Addison says. “After proper rail is installed and provided with adequate services, then, and only then, assess the road transport issues – should they arise.” The federal government has $1.6 billion on the table for the DSCRL, but is reviewing the project amid fears of a cost blowout, while the state government has committed just $14 million towards planning. The B2N rail upgrade is underway, with works on associated roadways and car parks built. Meanwhile, the state government says the planned Nicklin Way – Third Avenue extension at Caloundra is also still being considered, after the federal government withdrew $7 million in funding for it. “Project cost and funding contributions are subject to further consideration and negotiation,” a TMR spokesperson says. “The Department of Transport and Main Roads and SCC (Sunshine Coast Council) remain committed to delivering this important upgrade,” the spokesperson says. “The project team will continue to finalise the design for the project, taking into consideration key project-delivery objectives within available funding. “Design is expected to be completed in mid-2024.” Want more news daily? FEATURE STORY

A DESTINY TO SAVE CHILDREN’S LIVES A charity born and based on the Sunshine Coast has rescued thousands around the world from human trafficking. WORDS: Linda Read.

T

his is not a pretty story. It’s about some of the darkest parts of the human psyche, and some of the worst crimes imaginable. The human trafficking trade and the sexual exploitation of children are topics outside the realm of most of our everyday lives. For many of the world’s children, however, these unimaginable concepts are real-life nightmares. Unfortunately, thanks to the explosion of technology, these crimes are also on a rapid rise. However, there is a sliver of light in the darkness. Not-for-profit charity Destiny Rescue, founded and based on the Sunshine Coast, has made a sizeable dent in the number of children being trafficked and sold for sexual exploitation by rescuing them from horrific situations and helping to rebuild their lives. Since its foundation in 2001, the organisation has rescued 14,500 individuals (mostly children) from brothels, red-light districts and sexually abusive situations around the world. It is staffed by more than 250 volunteers and employees.

10 My Weekly Preview | February 8, 2024

10.indd 1

The rescue work is multifaceted. Destiny Rescue works with international border forces, governments and federal police. Agents often work undercover to gather evidence to build a case of child exploitation, which can lead to raids in some cases. In fact, Destiny Rescue is one of the few organisations internationally to conduct direct rescues, where trained rescue agents go into establishments and remove children. The team also conducts border rescues, intercepting and rescuing people from being trafficked across land borders. ‘Survival’ rescues involve working with children from impoverished communities, often in child-led households, who are selling themselves to put food on the table. The agency works to get these children out of those situations and into what is calls a ‘pathway of freedom’. With operations in 12 countries across three continents – Asia, Central and South America, and Africa – Destiny Rescue continues to fight for children’s freedom from sexual exploitation. It also aims to raise public awareness of the prevalence

of the industry, and to work with governments, including our own, to strengthen laws and regulations. Destiny Rescue CEO Paul Mergard says that more than a million children worldwide are sold into the “fast-moving” global sex trade yearly. Seventy per cent of the world’s children who are trafficked for sex are on Australia’s doorstep in Asia. It’s a region Mr Mergard describes as “a hotbed” of the trade, and an easily accessible destination for Australians, who unfortunately comprise a large portion of offenders in that area. “That’s where we tend to find a lot of Australians will go to exploit children,” he tells My Weekly Preview. Mr Mergard references a 2023 study by sociologist Professor Michael Salter, from the University of New South Wales, called Identifying and understanding child sexual offending behaviour and attitudes among Australian men. Many of the study’s findings are confronting: one-in-10 Australian men have reported having sexual feelings towards a child; and one in 10 of those have said that they have sexually offended

against children. “It’s incredibly disturbing,” Mr Mergard says. “What we certainly are tending to find is that it will start online on the internet – people sitting at home on their computer or phone, and then they travel overseas and they exploit overseas, and then they come back home. “Often, once someone starts contact offending, it kind of grows from there. I don’t think it’s going away any time soon.” Some of the dedicated agents who perform the rescues are from a lawenforcement background, although this is not always the case. Mr Mergard describes them as “a fairly diverse mix of people”. Many of the agents are citizens of the countries in which the rescue work is taking place, which also has the added bonus of job creation in impoverished countries. In Nepal, for example, the agents intercepting potential traffickers on the border comprise a “whole army of Nepalese women”. Mr Mergard describes them as “fierce border agents”. “Some of them have been trafficked myweeklypreview.com.au

FEATURE STORY

Destiny Rescue CEO Paul Mergard themselves, or they’re social workers, or they might have a law-enforcement background,” he says. “In 2022, we did something like 23,000 interviews in Nepal, and rescued 920 individuals that were being trafficked across that border. “If we’re in Thailand, we tend to have our western team go [undercover] into the bars that Aussies and Americans and Kiwis and Brits would go into. “But then there are the places that the Thais predominantly go, so our Thai team would go into those [because] they can speak the language fluently. “It’s pretty varied, actually, the type of people that end up going into the work.” One of the traits all the agents have in common, however, is a deep desire to make a positive difference to the lives of exploited children. “There’s a real sense of calling, for most of our team, to really feel like you were, in a sense, called to do this kind of work, because it’s certainly not for everybody,” Mr Mergard says. Mr Mergard can speak from

experience. With an unlikely background as an accountant, he was drawn to aid and development work after studying a post-graduate qualification in international development. That led him to work in some of the world’s most impoverished communities, which launched his 24-year career in the field. “My initial foray into aid and development work was more about poverty alleviation and working with impoverished communities in Africa predominantly in those early years,” he says. “When I became aware of the issue of human trafficking, I investigated that myself more and spent more time in it, and then I guess you just see stuff. “You see what happens to people when they are treated as something that is to be bought and sold, and there’s something that rises up in you that says: ‘This is not right, and we need to do something about it’. “I spent a fair bit of time in the red-light districts of India, and met people that absolutely inspired me – women that had been rescued from the sex trade.

“I felt super challenged by their resilience and their ability to overcome [their situation]. “I guess I felt that real calling. I’ve seen way too much, and I think that we can do something about the problem. “I think we see the worst of humanity and we see the best in humanity. “For me, I’m continually inspired by the kids we’ve been able to rescue. “When you see them on their own two feet and overcoming what the world threw at them, it’s actually incredibly rewarding.” Mr Mergard’s experience is similar to that of Destiny Rescue founder and now international president Tony Kirwan, who overheard two men in a bar in Thailand talking about exploiting a young girl in 2001. “Tony kind of thought, ‘Well, someone needs to do something about that’, and he heard that little voice saying, ‘Well, you’re someone: go do something about it’,” Mr Mergard says. While Destiny Rescue’s work is impressive, it is also relentless. Mr Mergard warns there is much more to be done. Securing funding remains an ongoing challenge. Fundraising is relentless, as Destiny Rescue relies on private funding. The organisation is hoping for government funding in the future. “We could probably double the number of kids we rescue overnight if we had the funding to do it,” Mr Mergard says. “We don’t have any shortage of finding kids to rescue – our biggest challenge as an organisation is having the resources to rescue more kids. We dream of the day when we’re not talking about 3000 rescues a year. We’re talking about 6000 or 10000 rescues a year. And that comes because you’ve got a whole heap of generous people who say, ‘We’re going to play our part, whether it be big or small – we just get to play our part in rescuing kids’.” Go to destinyrescue.org.au/donate/.

BY THE NUMBERS • Destiny Rescue has reached 14,500 rescues in 12 countries • More than one million children are exploited by sex trafficking each year • 70 per cent of children trafficked are from the Asia-Pacific region • $150 billion is generated by sex traffickers each year – $17 million every hour • Destiny Rescue has more than 250 volunteers and staff serving around the clock to rescue children and help them stay free • On average, it costs $1800 to rescue a child.

HOW YOU CAN HELP • Become a rescue partner monthly donor • Start a fundraiser • Become a corporate partner and support Destiny Rescue through workplace fundraising • Funding a scholarship to pay for schooling can mean the difference between a life of exploitation or safety for a child.

BY THE NUMBERS • In 2023, more than 150 students commenced a Diploma of Nursing under Free TAFE in the Sunshine Coast region. • The Sunshine Coast health industry is projected to grow 22.3 per cent by 2025-26. • It is estimated that the local industry will employ almost 40,000 local people by 2025-26.

HEALTHCARE INJECTION Sunshine Coast students are set to take advantage of the Free TAFE initiative offering thousands of places in the Diploma of Nursing.

T

housands of future nurses will receive free training on the Sunshine Coast as part a $87.5 million investment in the Diploma of Nursing. There are 3500 Diploma of Nursing places on offer this year, with more than 1700 students enrolled for Semester 1. The Free Diploma of Nursing is being

delivered by TAFE Queensland, CQUniversity and Mater Education at locations across the state. In our region, training will be facilitated by the Sunshine Coast Health Institute. Last year, more than 3100 students started a Diploma of Nursing under Free TAFE, including more than 150 on the Coast. There continues to be strong interest

in the Diploma of Nursing across Queensland, with more than 2500 people expressing an interest in studying the qualification this year. Healthcare and social assistance is the fastest-growing industry in the Sunshine Coast region, with Jobs Queensland data projecting the local industry will grow 22.3 per cent by 2025-26. Minister for Training and Skills Development Lance McCallum says nurses are the frontline heroes of health care in Queensland. “They dedicate their lives to helping people from the moment we come into the world as babies, through childhood and adulthood, and in our twilight years,” Mr McCallum says. “Nursing is a rewarding, highly skilled

and highly sought-after profession. “Last financial year, more than 55,000 people moved to Queensland, and as our state grows, we are growing our health sector with record numbers of frontline health workers. “By removing the financial barrier, we’re helping even more Queenslanders pursue exciting and rewarding careers in health. “While nursing students will save over $24,000 in study fees, all Queenslanders will benefit from their service, contributing to a stronger and more responsive health system. This valuable initiative also provides a financial incentive to students when cost of living is at the forefront of Queenslanders’ minds.” It is estimated that the industry will employ almost 40,000 local people by 2025-26, with the largest occupational groups including registered nurses. ‘INSPIRATIONAL LEADER’ The Walker Corporation chair is being remembered as a ‘true visionary’ for his contribution to the urban fabric of our nation.

ributes have flowed after the passing of property developer Lang Walker. Mr Walker, 78, played a significant role in the development of the new Maroochydore City Centre as the chair of Walker Corporation. Sunshine Coast Council and SunCentral entered an agreement with Walker Corporation in 2020 to market and

develop most of the remaining land via a $2.5 billion investment. “With the passing of Lang, our nation and our Sunshine Coast has lost a true visionary in city making, urban regeneration and philanthropy, and a person who always put people at the heart of what he did,” Mayor Mark Jamieson says. “Lang’s stewardship of Walker Corporation and its contribution to the

urban fabric of places like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and our own Maroochydore City Centre will be one of his greatest legacies.” My Walker formed his company more than 50 years ago, shaping it into Australia’s largest privately owned property groups. Walker Corporation managing director and chief executive officer David Gallant remembers Mr Walker as an inspirational leader. “Lang’s vision will remain an enduring force through the Walker DNA and the Walker way, which he actively passed on,” Mr Gallant says. SunCentral Maroochydore chair Morgan Parker has paid tribute to Mr Walker’s strategic foresight in seeing the Maroochydore City Centre’s “full potential”: “His belief in the Sunshine Coast’s bright future has been inspiring.” A statement from Mr Walker’s family says he loved creating incredible places, but he loved his family more than anything else and his generosity had no boundaries. “Our hearts are broken by the loss of a great man who changed the lives of so many people through his visionary projects and philanthropy,” the statement reads. “His zest for life and his relentless pursuit of perfection lives on within everyone in the Walker family.” Mr Walker is survived by wife Sue, four children and 10 grandchildren.

CHAMBER PUTS MAYORAL CANDIDATES IN SPOTLIGHT The community is being offered the chance to hear direct from the region’s mayoral candidates at a question-and-answer (Q&A) forum this month. It comes ahead of the March 16 local government elections, which will see residents go to the polls to elect a Sunshine Coast mayor for the next four years. My Weekly Preview and its sister site Sunshine Coast News, in collaboration with the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, will run a Meet the Mayoral Candidates event on February 19. While the live event is only open to Caloundra Chamber of Commerce members to attend, Sunshine Coast News will share videos of the candidates’ answers to all the tough questions online. Each candidate will discuss their ideas and visions before the floor is opened up to the Q&A. While official mayoral applications close on February 13, at the time of print Sunshine Coast TV presenter Rosanna Natoli, councillor Jason O’Pray, law expert Wayne Parcell, businesswoman Min Swan, community advocate and businessman Ashley Robinson and businessman Michael Burgess have all put forward their intentions to run. The videos will be available on sunshinecoastnews. com.au in the days following the event.

PROFILE book, The Other Bridget. If you are an avid romance reader or want to learn about what goes into writing a bestseller, this is one event not to miss.

Why did you decide to become a romance writer? – I started writing at 17 after accidentally dumping my high school sweetheart. It was kind of therapy, but I caught the bug. I then did a creative writing degree at university but the focus there was literary fiction. It wasn’t until almost 10 years later, when I decided to try my hand at romance writing after a bet with a friend, that I fell in love with the genre and realised where I was supposed to be.

What makes a great romance novel? – I

ROMANCING THE READER WITH LOVE AND OBSTACLES Readers have the chance to hear one of Australia’s bestselling novelists discuss her craft and latest book at a Sunshine Coast Libraries event.

R

achael Johns is one of Australia’s bestselling romance authors who continually places in Booktopia’s Top 50 Aussie Authors poll. As the award-winning author of The Patterson Girls and a number of other romance and fiction books, including the popular Something to Talk About, she is

currently Australia’s leading writer of contemporary relationship stories around women’s issues. With Valentine’s Day almost here, we caught up with the talented writer ahead of her upcoming visit to the region as part of Sunshine Coast Libraries’ In Conversation events to discuss her latest

think there are three things you need on every page in great romance fiction: chemistry, emotion and tension. You need to feel the spark and attraction between the characters and believe that they are perfect for each other but there needs to be enough roadblocks to their happy ever after that you have doubt whether they’ll get there. Mystery and crime novels aren’t the only ones that should leave us desperate to find out if it all works out so that we’re turning the pages late into the night. It’s the journey of two characters meeting and falling in love that readers go on every time they read a romance novel.

How would you describe your writing style? – Entertaining and easy to read. I want to write the kind of books that you take on holiday or read on a plane or on a train – books that make you laugh and cry but also think about issues that affect us all on a daily basis.

What can readers expect from the book? – The Other Bridget is about a librarian who is named after the famous Bridget

Jones and believes she’s cursed in love because of this. Although she’s unlucky in love, she’s very good at her job. Her superpower is finding non-readers the perfect book to turn them into bookworms. As you follow Bridget, her quirky colleagues at the library, the book club she runs and her two love interests, you’ll laugh, cry and experience all the feels in between.

What are you most looking forward to during your visit to the Sunshine Coast? – The best thing about book tours is getting to meet readers and reconnect with fans who you’ve met before. Hearing from readers who have loved my books, especially when they tell me particular ones that have touched their hearts or even changed their lives, reminds me why I do this. Sadly, there often isn’t a lot of time to sightsee and explore as the schedule is fairly hectic, but when I briefly visit a place, I usually add it to my travel bucket list. What advice would you give to an aspiring romance writer? - The best thing you’ll ever do for your writing as a romance author is join the Romance Writers of Australia. I would not be where I am today without this fab group. RW Aus offers networking with other authors at all stages of their careers, an amazing annual conference where you’ll learn all you can about the genre and business, a monthly magazine and lots, lots more.

Event details: When: Friday, February 16, 9.30am for a 10am start. Where: The Events Centre, 20 Minchinton Street, Caloundra. Tickets: $25 per person. Bookings via the council’s libraries website.

ROMANTIC INTEREST How to truly connect and show you care without making a big production of your efforts to get closer to someone.

W

hat do reality TV shows such as The Bachelor, My Mum/Your Dad, and MAFS have in common? Other than being binge-worthy, you get to witness people exchange painfully embarrassing banter in the hopes of a romantic connection. Though it is highly entertaining to watch, it’s not as cute when you have to go

through it in real life. Relationship expert Linda Prescott, from Ideal Introductions, is sharing her fun flirting, non-cringey techniques with My Weekly Preview ahead of Valentine’s Day. Exude confidence – Quiet confidence is what you should aim for and it’s about knowing your self-worth, minus the arrogance. Pay compliments – Give a genuine

compliment (no cheesy pick-up lines). This shows how you really feel about their outfit, personality or looks. Touch them subtly – Subtle skin-toskin contact can indicate romantic interest. If it’s mirrored, then your interest is likely being reciprocated. But be careful not to make advances that are inappropriate. Smile like you mean it – When you are truly attracted to someone, your whole face will light up when you smile at them, and that is the look you want them to see. Make them laugh – Gentle teasing is playful: a flirting technique that works to capture the person’s attention and create banter. Just remember to keep teasing kind and light-hearted. Do something nice – Offering to walk them to their car, deliver dinner to them during a late night at the office, or help fix a leaky tap show that you care about their wellbeing. Slip their name into the convo – Using the person’s name when you’re talking to them is an easy way to try to create an immediate connection. Hold that eye contact – Holding eye contact adds intimacy to the situation. If your love interest is across the room, try to catch their attention, then hold their gaze and smile before looking away. Find more from Linda Prescott at idealintroductions.com.au.

THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT For those in a happy relationship who choose to mark the occasion, Valentine’s Day is a chance to show your love for someone. While tradition often dictates roses, chocolates or romantic dinners, a simple post to social media of your favourite recent (or golden oldie) photo together is a nice touch. For a thoughtful gift, why not have the photo printed out and framed? Maybe you’ll test your competitive side at bowling or mini golf, get active and hire a kayak or stand-up paddle board, or enjoy a night at the cinema. If staying in is more your vibe, why not cook dinner together and pick a film or board game to play afterwards?

Sexy scents Scent is a powerful element in the laws of attraction. So, there’s nothing that quite sets the mood like a great perfume. Whether you’re looking to impress on a first date or spice up the romance after years together, here’s some scents Linda says are sure to wow. Female: • Giorgio Armani Sì • Dior Pure Poison • Tom Ford Santal Blush • Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme Intense. Male: • 1 Million Prive Paco Rabanne • Yves Saint Laurent L’homme Ultime • Jimmy Choo Man Intense • Bvlgari Man in Black.

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL PROMOTION

DESTRUCTIVE PESTS CAUGHT IN RECORD NUMBERS Invasive species are being trapped and removed in record numbers across the Sunshine Coast, in a united effort between Council and the community to protect our region’s biodiversity. In 2023, Council’s team removed 335 feral deer from registered properties in the region: almost triple the previous record set in 2021. Better technology and improved staff skill sets and teamwork have meant feral deer can be detected and euthanised quickly. During the year, Council staff removed 91 foxes through trapping across the region, alongside other control strategies including den detection using conservation dogs. Meanwhile, community trapping contributed to 1315 Indian myna birds being removed from our environment. Indian myna birds are highly territorial and will out-compete our native species for food and nesting sites. These birds have invaded and become prolific throughout eastern Australia, and controlling populations in our region is only possible with strong community involvement. When residents learn about invasive species and how to protect their place, the whole region can enjoy a stronger environment and biodiversity. Find out about our region’s invasive animals and how you can help on Council’s website.

Kulangoor Cemetery

Planning cemetery services for the future The master-planning process is underway to identify suitable land and offer alternatives to traditional options.

T

he Sunshine Coast population is expected to hit 400,000 by 2028. With that growth, there will be an increased need for our region’s cemetery network to evolve in line with community expectations and demand. The Sunshine Coast Cemetery Plan 2019-2028 provides strategic direction to ensure Council’s cemetery network and services reflect the needs of our growing population – now and into the future. Currently, Council manages 18 cemeteries, and four of those have reached their burial capacity. Caloundra Cemetery, which has served the community for 114 years, will also soon be closed to new burials, but remains open to ash internments (cremations).

Other cemeteries are located at Beerwah, Crohamhurst, Eumundi, Gheerulla, Kulangoor, Mapleton, Mooloolah, Witta and Yandina, with each offering a variety of service options for the community. Future land use for cemetery purposes is being explored by Council within the Beerwah and Mooloolah cemetery reserves. Alternatives to traditional cemetery options are also readily available, in keeping with a national trend towards families choosing cremations over traditional burials. In March 2021, Council introduced a natural burials area at Eumundi Cemetery, providing an environmentally friendly burial option. Natural burials require the

body to be laid to rest with only organic materials and no headstone. The natural burials area within Eumundi Cemetery is an original forested space with large established trees, native plants and wildlife. A master-planning process is underway for Kulangoor Cemetery, which is the region’s largest cemetery. A community reference group, consisting of funeral industry practitioners and community group leaders, has been formed to help guide the master-planning process and the broader cemetery network across our region. For more information on Sunshine Coast Council cemetery services, contact the cemeteries team on 5459 2300 or email cemeteries@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Mooloolaba’s transformation underway Grab your opportunity to be a part of two key groups sharing ‘real time’ information with the wider community about Stage 2.

HOW RATEPAYERS CAN COLLECT FREE TREES FROM NURSERY Did you know that Sunshine Coast ratepayers are eligible to collect two free trees twice a year – that’s four trees a year from the Council nursery. The only conditions are that you need to present a current rate notice and collect the trees on Wednesdays between 1 and 3pm from Council’s Caloundra Depot Nursery at 54 Industrial Avenue. Sunshine Coast Council provides a selection of small, medium and large trees, including specific species native to the area. You can chat with Council’s ‘tree-mendous’ team to find the right plants for your garden. Native trees provide so many benefits to the environment, increase shade, cool urban areas and are an essential food source for wildlife and benefit their habitats. Last year, Council distributed 1200 free trees through the Free Trees for Ratepayers program. Free trees: When: Every Wednesday. Time: Between 1 and 3pm. Where: Council’s Caloundra Depot Nursery, 54 Industrial Avenue, Caloundra. Remember to bring along your current rate notice to be eligible.

C

onstruction planning is progressing for Stage 2 of the Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation. This includes a showpiece central meeting place, flowing viewing decks, picnic areas, expansive landscaping, new public amenities comprising toilets and beach showers, a terraced seawall and broad, accessible coastal pathway. Sunshine Coast Council is seeking expressions of interest from individuals who want to be part of a Mooloolaba Business Activation Group or Mooloolaba Stakeholder Interest Group. The two groups will bring together interested parties to share information, insights and ideas aimed at making the

construction phase as smooth as possible for businesses, locals and visitors. It will also ensure the groups are relaying key information back to their communities in ‘real time’, instead of hearing it from another source. Council urges anyone with a passion for Mooloolaba and its future to consider nominating before February 13.

These new reference groups are another way Council is continuing to engage and support our community.

Scan the QR code to apply before February 13.

HOW YOU CAN WIN $1000 OFF YOUR NEXT RATE BILL Sunshine Coast Council rate notices are due for payment by Friday, February 23, and ratepayers once again have the chance to win up to $1000 off their next rate bill. You can put yourself in the running to win by signing up to receive future rate notices by email and paying your current rate bill online. To change your rate notice

delivery method, simply register for a MyCouncil account on Council’s website or login to an existing account and change your rate notice delivery method to ‘email’ before Wednesday, February 21. If you already receive your rate notice by email, you’re automatically in the running. You’ll find a range of convenient online payment options on your rate notice.

FLASHING SIGNS REMIND DRIVERS TO SLOW DOWN There will be no excuse for drivers to slow down after flashing 40kmh signs have been installed near Chancellor State College and the Palmview school precinct. Recent data shows 36,507 of Queensland drivers were fined for speeding in school zones between 2021 and September last year, with some caught driving more than double the speed limit. Member for Buderim Brent Mickelberg (pictured, right) says he is happy to see the signs installed after years of advocacy. “It’s better late than never. I had approached the former Main Roads minister on many occasions to have these signs installed,” Mr Mickelberg says. “The safety of our children should be top priority. Our community continues to grow rapidly and with that comes the need to improve road safety around our local schools. “There were almost 10,000 drivers caught speeding in Queensland school zones last year up to September. That’s a scary number when we’re talking about the lives of children.” Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson (pictured, left) says he has

THE ENCHANTED DRIVE Caloundra Regional Gallery, in collaboration with Sunshine Coast Libraries, presents the next exhibition for the Maroochydore Library Artspace. Toni Rea’s series The Enchanted Drive: Landscape in motion is inspired by driving through the Glass House Mountains or the Daki, as it is known by the Gubbi Gubbi people. This abstract painting series is a response to the disorientation caused by motion, with strobe sunlight through the broken tree canopy, bleached-out noon forms, inclines and falls of the landscape juxtaposed against horizons that appear and disappear. When: Friday, February 9, 9.30-10.30am Where: Maroochydore Library, 44 Sixth Avenue, Maroochydore. Tickets: Free event. MY OPINION

OUR LANGUAGE ‘IS WHAT IT IS’

DON’T BE A BUNS BUNNY

Jane Stephens discusses some of her pet peeves when it comes to overused phrases and wishes people would just say what they mean.

Sami Muirhead wants us all to resist the temptation of buying those scrumptious squares that religiously hit bakery shelves well before Easter.

“Y

ou just do you,” I said to My Beloved when we were trying to work out some difficult logistics in our clashing schedules – and I gasped at my own utterance. My mouth felt unclean – in a way that a little mouthwash could not fix. Annoying phrases are so pervasive that they seemingly find their way to the lips of those who swear off them. They are creeping damp, a noxious fog, an invisible cloud. I was dining out recently, and the waitress asked, “What are we having today? What did we decide?”. I resisted the urge to point out that she was not breaking bread with us, nor were we going to order for her. She finished our exchange with “too easy” – another of those phrases that mean nothing at all but are ubiquitous. A woman at a table nearby said “nom nom nom” out loud as her food arrived. I may have rolled my eyes, and I am quite sure that her juvenile noise doesn’t even border on being English. Outside of the dining scene, when did it become acceptable for full-grown adults to use ‘cray-cray’ and when did ‘brah’ replace

‘mate’ or ‘buddy’? ‘Brah’ might be a term of endearment, but it also sounds very ‘meh’. In business, there is a load of current phrases that have caught on but do not amount to a hill of beans. “At the end of the day” is a way of shutting down conversation, and “can we circle back to” is more popular than asking a speaker to return to the point. Facilitators talk about thinking “outside the box” but then say, awkwardly, “let’s unpack this”. There are some solid passive-aggressive phrases on the rise, too, with “no offence but”, “with the greatest respect” and “to be honest” among them. You can bet that what follows is certain to cause offence, lack respect and be inappropriately honest. So many phrases sound important but mean nothing at all. People say they are “touching base” and “reaching out” instead of calling or talking. There has been a lot of references to ‘learnings’ instead of lessons at schools and ‘gifting’ instead of giving over Christmas. At the end of the day, everyone has their phrase bugbears. If the ones here are not in your list, it can be “my bad” as well as “all good”. I am “sorry, not sorry” – because “it is what it is”.

I

am hot and cross and not just feeling flustered due to the crazy weather that has us all melting. Hot cross buns. They have turned rogue and their new flavours are outrageous. I am a purist when it comes to flavours of the square slabs for your soul: fruitflavoured, toasted, only with butter is the correct order of affairs. I am a Libran and I struggle to make decisions in many situations, but I am very black and white when it comes to these little squares of delicious dough. You can only eat hot cross buns one week out from Easter. Fact. The law. No arguments. We had not even packed away the star atop the Christmas tree when the little mounds appeared on the supermarket shelves. My husband and children are taking great pleasure in bringing home hot cross buns when Easter is nearly two months away. They like to see me suffer. They love to stir me up and hope for a reaction. Twisted souls. It is working and, I repeat, I am hot and cross. Woolworths has gone bonkers with the range it is baking this year. There is a Lotus

Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.

Biscoff-spread hot cross bun. Last year, the supermarket released a Lotus Biscoff cheesecake. The clever marketing results in the novelty flavours being only available for a small window of time each year, and the flavour combinations seem to get wilder by the year. Hang on to your Easter bonnet as there is also a Cadbury Caramilk hot cross bun. And a fairy bread version. I am a tiny bit partial to this one because the cross is pink and you add the hundreds and thousands yourself – so, you feel like you are basically Jamie Oliver. Coles is rumoured to be set to release a savoury flavoured hot cross bun in a collaboration with Arnotts Pizza Shapes. Last year, Coles released limited-edition flavours of red velvet cupcake, carrot cake and savoury burger sauce. Who comes up with these flavours? And there is a Vegemiteflavoured hot cross bun. But do not cheat, Sunshine Coast. Hold strong and resist eating the toasted treats until closer to Easter. We need to keep some sanity in our civilisation. The only flavour I would truly endorse would be Baileys in the bun. Now that would be special.

MY OPINION

Justin Scattini, Ord Minnett Buderim

TIME TO ADD DURATION? The past year has proven positive for fixed-income investors. Looking ahead, longer-duration assets should benefit as markets continue to push back against central bank rhetoric, discounting falling inflation and a peak in global cash rates. This is particularly true in the US, where the yield curve remains deeply inverted. Locally, fixed-rate credit and the broader Bloomberg AusBond Composite Index recorded mid-single digit gains in 2023 – a meaningful turnaround on the previous year. As expected, floating-rate credit delivered the same returns as the broader market, albeit with less volatility. With cash rates approaching their peaks, our preference between fixed- and floating-rate securities has become more balanced. For some time, Ord Minnett has advocated a portfolio largely weighted to floating-rate securities to capture the higher income, due to rising interest rates, and the lower volatility, given the minimal duration exposure. Most of the gains from floating-rate securities are now behind us, and as we approach the peak, it is prudent to incorporate some fixed-rate exposure. As yields fall, the prices of fixed-rate bonds should increase in response, offering capital upside. That said, interest rates are expected to remain elevated until

inflation eases further. So, floating-rate exposure will remain an important inclusion in portfolios for those seeking to capture the higher income yields offered by floating-rate securities. Sophisticated and professional investors have the option to invest in fixed and floating-rate securities directly, but there are plenty of managed options available to retail investors to get an exposure in their portfolio. The Janus Henderson Tactical Income Fund has an outstanding and lengthy track record managing these investment environments and has consistently outperformed its benchmark and peers using its disciplined investment process. Interest rates remain volatile in the face of conflicting economic data, with the fund navigating choppy investment markets by leveraging the spectrum of fixed-income instruments, including physical bonds and derivatives. Importantly, however, it can manage exposure across fixed- and floating-rate instruments in response to macroeconomic developments. For those with a greater risk appetite and who are seeking greater duration exposure, the Betashares Western Asset Australian Bond Fund is a portfolio of Australian fixed-rate bonds. It has a similar level of duration to the Composite, and the active management should help mitigate the larger fluctuations seen in passive vehicles that simply track the index.

Q: Describe your cooking style or the cuisine you specialise in. A. My training is very much classical French. The first 12 years of my career were spent living, eating and cooking all things French influenced. Given that training, learning all the classic techniques and understanding flavour profiles and textures, you can become very adaptable. My cooking style is very much based around building flavour. My team can get a bit frustrated as I’m not one for recipes.

Urban Lamb is a high-end takeaway shop, located in Buddina, that specialises in ready-to-eat, slow-cooked lamb and twice-cooked potatoes. The menu is specifically designed to offer various bundle options to customers, including the ‘Ultimate Feast’ which will feed up to six people. Order this month and make a difference: $1 from every order will be donated to the Mater Little Miracles Foundation. Visit the website to order online, or head in store. Open from noon to 7pm, Wednesdays to Sundays. Urban Lamb, Shop 1/5 Bermagui Crescent, Buddina, urbanlamb.com.au

Q: What is your favourite dish on the menu right now? A. The nature of the industry at the moment and the staff shortages have meant the current menu is a little limited, so it allows me to spend time on creating ‘Chef Selections’ that we change sometimes daily or every couple of days, depending on the dish. It’s not so much about one dish, but showing the team all different dishes, cooking styles and techniques. Q: Do you have a favourite local ingredient to work with? A. We are in Mooloolaba and have a direct relationship with a local trawler. So, of course using versatile Mooloolaba king prawns. Q: What do you love most about your role? A. We have a developing team of keen young chefs who show an interest in what we are doing and get excited when a new dish comes up. I get a kick out of hitting targets and setting goals for myself and the team. I love the challenges that running kitchens – especially one of this size – offers, and seeing the success on the other side. Q: What do you love to cook at home? A. My wife is vegan, so I take dishes that have for years been meat based and turn them into incredible vegan dishes. ‘Beef’ Bourguignon done with mushrooms is incredible.

Acqua is one of Caloundra’s mostenticing culinary offerings – a waterfront destination for good food and great times, boasting a down-toearth menu, with breathtaking water views over Pumicestone Passage. WORD STEP

_____ _____ _____ _____ PALLS

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Romantic vibes are high, as love planet Venus links up with atmospheric Neptune. Focus your attention on your lover, as you give them the right royal treatment this Valentine’s Day via a special pronouncement, a thoughtful gift or a candlelit dinner.

Geminis love to chat, so this Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to tell loved ones how much you really care. Inspiration for the week is from artist Yoko Ono (who was born on February 18, 1933): ‘The regret of my life is that I have not said ‘I love you’ often enough.’

Attached Crabs – you’re feeling extra romantic as you lavish attention (and money) on your partner, wear your heart on your sleeve or play out a secret fantasy with your lover. Singles – don’t base your self-esteem on whether you have a partner.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)

VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)

LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)

SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)

With the sun, Mercury, Mars and Pluto all visiting your partnership zone, prepare for a bold and busy Valentine’s Day. Coupled Cats – why not initiate a special romantic rendezvous with your partner? Singles – in order to find true love, you need to be brave.

At the moment, with taskmaster Saturn moving slowly through your romance zone, love is a very serious business. So your quote for Valentine’s Day is from writer William Barclay: ‘Love always involves responsibility, and love always involves sacrifice.’

Librans are addicted to love in all its forms – romantic, platonic, and universal. Whether you’re attached, searching for your soulmate or happily single, Valentine’s Day is a time to reflect on the fact that love really does make the world go round.

When it comes to finding (and maintaining) love, resist the urge to be overly controlling. Attached Scorpio – avoid the temptation to be bossy at home; give your spouse more space. Singles – stop looking for love in all the obvious places.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)

PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)

It’s time to be more proactive about your health, fitness, diet and daily routine, but tread carefully with an unpredictable relative or neighbour, who may be stewing with a hidden grievance. On Valentine’s Day, find a dream you can share together.

Don’t take your partner – or potential partner – for granted. If you do, then your lover may go looking for attention elsewhere. (‘Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone. It has to be made like bread, remade all the time, made new.’ – Ursula Le Guin.)

This week – as we celebrate Valentine’s Day – the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Pluto are all powering through your sign, so you’re at your amorous, adventurous, quirky Aquarian best. Spread your special kind of universal love around.

Love planet Venus hooks up with your power planet, Neptune, so romance is in the air. But the energy is suggesting a private Valentine’s Day. (‘Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze,’ –Carolyn Gold Heilbrun.)

There is nothing else like it on the rivers of Europe – a truly boutique hotel on water. You can expect the finest décor – with bespoke fabric, original artwork and beautiful antiques. The lobby is as grand as they come, featuring a Murano glass chandelier, marbled floors, a

dramatic staircase, and original art by the likes of Pablo Picasso. As soon as we stepped onto the SS Beatrice, the staff were professional and provided exceptional service. The cabins are beautifully appointed, extremely comfortable and thoughtfully equipped with all the little extras you need. If you are fortunate enough to travel in one of the beautiful suites, you also get your own in-cabin butler service to attend to your every need. The food on board was sensational.

Breakfast and lunch are buffet style, with an extensive array of dishes to choose from, while dinner is a four-course meal with a menu that changes daily. The chefs will always feature dishes on the menu that reflect the cuisine of the ship’s destinations. We were treated with goulash in Budapest and weiner schnitzel in Vienna. And if you have a sweet tooth, you cannot go past the dessert station – all I can say is, wow! Uniworld also takes the all-inclusive concept to the next level, with an

THE FACES AT THE HELM These are the men and women shaping the educational landscape at some of our best schools, and helping to prepare students for the future.

T

he Sunshine Coast is home to a diverse and vibrant educational community, where dedicated educators play a pivotal role in shaping the minds and futures of our children. In this special feature, we have the privilege of introducing readers to the remarkable principals who are at the helm of some of our best local schools. From their inspiring visions for education to their personal journeys and commitment to empowering the next generation, these leaders exemplify the spirit of excellence that defines our educational landscape. They share their thoughts on what inspired them to become educators, the

challenges they face in the future, and how the introduction of cutting-edge technology has changed education and the way they lead their school. These principals are not only educators but also mentors, role models and champions of the next generation in our region. Their impact extends far beyond the schools walls, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those they nurture and the future of our community. Their dedication, vision and unwavering commitment to student success are at the heart of their work. We are honoured to showcase their exemplary leadership and the profound influence these leaders have on shaping the bright minds of tomorrow.

wanted to assist students to achieve to their potential. I had some great teachers at school and many of them inspired me to take up education as a career through their expertise and care. As a school leader, positive relationships are at the core of what I do.

What are your aspirations for the future growth and development of the school under your leadership? – This year Good Sams will graduate our first cohort of Year 12 students. This is an important milestone for our growing college. Into the future, I want to see the college grow to a full enrolment of 1500 students over the next few years and continue to grow the educational and co-curricula offerings of the college.

What is the most-rewarding part of your job? – Seeing students achieve to their potential. The most rewarding part is when students who graduated 10, 20 or even 30 years ago stop you in the street or at a function and say ‘thanks’. It is very humbling.

What challenges do you see in education over the next few years? – As a college, we have a strong focus on

literacy and numeracy across all subject areas. A challenge for all in education is the need to ensure that this focus remains our core business, despite a crowded curriculum and conflicting priorities for time and resources.

How has the integration of new technology affected the way you lead the school? – When I started as a principal, my school had one computer. Today, technology is embedded in all we do and we have access to wonderful learning opportunities and seemingly unlimited sources of information. The challenge for leaders is to ensure that the technology is used to enhance learning and not distract from it.

How do you adapt to these advancements while ensuring a balanced learning experience? – Advancements in technology will never replace a good teacher and well-planned lessons with a variety of resources. For a balanced learning experience, advancements in technology provide one of the resources in a teacher’s toolkit. Our students are extremely lucky that the technology available to them can support their learning in so many different ways.

Carroll Matthew Flinders Anglican College

What is the most-rewarding part of your job? – It’s incredibly rewarding to What inspired you to become an educator and how has that influenced your leadership style? – I was always drawn to a career in teaching as I wanted to make a difference. Being an educator is certainly a fulfilling profession as we shape the future of our society by supporting students to find their strengths and passions and to navigate the complexity of their teen years. My leadership style has evolved as I have learned to be more curious, to lean into conversations and to value integrity with my decision making.

What are your aspirations for the future growth and development of the school under your leadership? – I hope to be influential in educating Flinders graduates who are not only academically able but also young people of good character who step forward with purpose and a willingness to contribute to society. I also look forward to continuing to enhance the college’s contemporary learning spaces through a 15-year Flinders Masterplan. The college recently celebrated the opening of two bespoke buildings: the Infinity Centre and Flagship Centre.

celebrate student achievement at the end of the year, particularly when we know the story that sits behind the accomplishment and how the student navigated challenges.

What challenges do you see in education over the next few years? – I am cautious about AI’s expanding influence and eager to explore how we, as earnest educators, successfully navigate the next wave of technology while maintaining integrity and knowledge-building in our programs.

How has the integration of new technology affected the way you lead the school? – Flinders is proactive in understanding technology’s impact on everyday teaching and learning. Each student’s learning experience requires unique adaptations of practice with a genuine value placed on the questions we ask and associated thinking, rather than rote learning and production of content. As for technology’s impact on wellbeing, it is a priority at Flinders that students experience healthy interactions, build friendships and engage in campus life.

formation of young people.

What challenges do you see in education over the next few years? – The future challenge is for education What inspired you to become an educator and how has that influenced your leadership style? – My undergraduate degree was in pure mathematics and statistics, after which I felt a strong calling to the beautiful messiness of working with people. So, teaching sparked my interest. This means that I like the technical aspects of education, as well as the importance of whole-person growth.

What are your aspirations for the future growth and development of the school under your leadership? – The future for NCC will be continuing to provide a vast learning program and specialty resources. This will mean being responsive to local and global needs while maintaining a strong emphasis on the traditional programs that contribute to the greater good.

What is the most-rewarding part of your job? – There is great joy in being part of a strongly connected community that influences the moral (character)

and institutions to drive cultural improvement, rather than be merely influenced by cultural shifts and public policy.

How has the integration of new technology affected the way you lead the school? – New technology has expanded the toolbox for learning. It is essential, however, to consistently align these tools with the goals of education, rather than viewing them as ends in themselves. This thoughtful approach ensures that technology enhances the learning experience rather than detracting from it, and the notable surge in recent years allows for more dynamic and interconnected educational environments.

students and proud of the excellent staff and students who make us who we are at Noosa District State High School.

What is the most-rewarding part of your job? – Working with students and What inspired you to become an educator and how has that influenced your leadership style? – My moral purpose is to make a difference to student lives and contribute to the future. I am inspired by the opportunity that education brings and believe that our young people are the most valuable resource we have. I feel privileged every day to do the work I do.

What are your aspirations for the future growth and development of the school under your leadership? – Noosa High is one of the most unique schools in Queensland, with our three campuses, incredible location, diversity of programs, great students and staff. I look forward to the continued innovation of our multi-campus schooling model and the opportunity this brings for our students. I have worked in education for 23 years in a range of Secondary schools and `became the principal of Noosa High in 2022. I am privileged to have this role and passionate about the incredible opportunities tour school provides to

seeing them develop and succeed. The Noosa community has a special place in my heart and my moral purpose as a leader is to support the success of our entire school community and make a positive difference in students’ lives.

What challenges do you see in education over the next few years? – The need to develop more flexible and contemporary learning pathways for students in a fast-paced society.

How has the integration of new technology affected the way you lead the school? – Digital innovation has resulted in future-focused teaching and learning practices across all aspects of our school.

What inspired you to become an educator and how has that influenced your leadership style? – I had an excellent education and I wished to be able to provide opportunities for others to have the same. My leadership style is very much transformational, as I seek not only to impact individuals, but also positively transform communities and culture.

What are your aspirations for the future growth and development of the school under your leadership? – I would love to see Siena Catholic College continue to provide an excellent learning experience for its learners, empowering them to experience fullness of life and be the best version of themselves. As Catherine of Siena famously said, “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire”.

How do you adapt to these advancements while ensuring a balanced learning experience? – By using technology as a partner in learning

What is the most-rewarding part of your job? – The relationships I enjoy

and ensuring a focus on engagement, wellbeing and the development of personal and social capabilities in our young people.

with the learners, staff and wider college community. I love people. And forging positive relationships is key to a healthy community culture.

What challenges do you see in education over the next few years? – Definitely mental wellbeing and how this impacts learning, engagement and motivation in relation to learning, and growing quality, expert teachers and retaining them in what is a teacher shortage.

How has the integration of new technology affected the way you lead the school? – Technology is a great tool to support learning, that enables us to carry out our work efficiently, creatively and innovatively. In terms of the way I integrate it to lead, I use it as a tool. My leadership is centred around looking at improving all facets of learning to engage learners, using high-impact strategies. Integrated technology is a tool that lends itself to this.

How do you adapt to these advancements while ensuring a balanced learning experience? – I believe it is through quality, professional growth of teachers who are adept at using their teaching to respond to these advancements in a balanced way to ensure quality learning takes place, resulting in excellent learner outcomes.

A SPRING IN EACH STEP OF CHARITY WALK

T

he annual Steps for STEPS charity walk is back on Friday, March 8. The STEPS Pathways College students, trainers and volunteers will take to the pavement together and walk an impressive 30km to raise funds. The 92.7 MIXFM breakfast show hosts Mark Darin and Caroline Hutchinson will be walking alongside while recording their morning broadcast live. They will begin at the radio station office in Maroochydore and finish at the STEPS college campus at 9 George Street, Caloundra. This year, STEPS Pathways Boarding and Day College students will participate in the walk, with some experienced striders such as Josh Harvey determined to

tackle the entire 30km. Funds raised from the event will go directly towards supporting the students at STEPS Pathways College: Australia’s only boarding college for young adults living with a disability and autism. STEPS executive manager of business partnerships Michael Williamson says fundraising events such as this one are vital for the college. “Generous donations like these ensure students at STEPS Pathways College are given the opportunity to learn essential life skills to live independently in the community,” he says. “The students are incredible humans, and I am so proud to walk beside them.” The event will kick off at 6am from the radio station and finish about 4pm, with

walkers crossing the finish line at their campus to celebrate their outstanding achievement with STEPS staff, sponsors and fellow students. There will be excellent opportunities to cheer on the students as they make their way through Cotton Tree, Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba, along the Nicklin Way at Kawana through Moffat Beach, Kings Beach, and along Bulcock Street before finishing at the STEPS front gates. Students have dedicated time creating their own fundraising pages, personalising them with heartwarming biographies and photos, with each hoping to meet their fundraising goal of $2000. Head to stepsforsteps.com.au to read the students’ inspirational stories and help them reach their goal.

Parents of children with a disability or developmental delay can often feel confused about the NDIS and where to start. There’s a lot of information to take in and the process differs depending on your child’s age. The NDIS early childhood approach is a nationally consistent approach for early childhood intervention for children with developmental delay or disability and their families. It aims to give children the best possible start in life. Here’s what you need to know about the NDIS early childhood approach: 1. It’s for children under the age of six with developmental delay or children under the age of nine with disability. 2. It may include mainstream (non-NDIS) supports, NDIS supports or a combination of both. 3. Children who don’t fully meet the definition of developmental delay but have developmental concerns can also receive support. 4. It puts the family at the centre of all services and supports. 5. Children don’t need a diagnosis to get support. If you have concerns about your child’s development, contact your doctor, maternal and child health nurse, or other health professional. Your healthcare professional may connect you with an NDIS early childhood partner. You can also contact an early childhood partner yourself. No diagnosis is necessary and your child does not have to be eligible for the NDIS to access early childhood supports. For more information, go to leapin.com.au.

COMMUNITY OPEN DAY WELCOMES NEW CENTRE TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

DRIVING INDEPENDENCE, WHILE NAVIGATING YOUR SUPPORT NEEDS

Suncare Community Services Ltd has officially opened its newest location in Gympie, following the success of the Maroochydore Community Centre. The doors of the centre at 2 Horseshoe Bend officially opened on February 5, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Suncare Community Services Ltd interim executive general manager Belinda von Bibra, and chair Mario Pennisi. The centre aims to address the unique demographic challenges faced by the community and respond to the critical needs of Gympie’s ageing population, where 25 per cent of residents are over the age of 65. Ms von Bibra highlighted the significance of this expansion, stating: “With the launch of our Gympie location, we are extending our reach to support the growing needs of an ageing population. “Gympie is home to a substantial elderly population with distinctive needs, often reflecting a lower socio-economic situation, and the support that Suncare provides has real impacts with regards to helping people remain living independently in their own homes and also feeling connected socially.”

The Caring Concierge is more than just a service – it’s a community. Nestled in the heart of Buderim – servicing all points north, south and west of the Sunshine Coast – the service is proud to be considered the best, providing unrivalled community access and social support for elderly and aged care clientele, as well as those under the NDIS. The service believes in the power of community. That’s why at The Caring Concierge, the service is locals helping locals. The team – made up of dedicated local residents – is committed to providing unparalleled support to its neighbours. The mission at The Caring Concierge is to champion the independence of Coast residents, fostering connections within our vibrant community. The service considers itself your neighbours, your friends, and your partners in navigating life’s journey through its concierge services. Whether it’s providing safe and reliable community access for medical appointments, assisting with shopping

On Tuesday, February 6, customers and community members were welcomed to the Suncare Gympie Open Day and encouraged to participate in activities including free blood-pressure testing, tai chi and a seniors’ cyber security workshop. Over the past three months, Suncare has actively supported more than 765 customers in the Gympie area, providing in excess of 1300 hours of essential services. This highlights the immediate impact and vital role Suncare Community Services plays in enhancing the lives of our elderly population. OVER-THE-TOP BIDS FOR RENTAL PROPERTIES BANNED Premier beefs up laws targeting ‘unfair practice’ as part of reforms and $160m relief package to ease housing crisis throughout the state.

R

eal estate agents and landlords in Queensland will be banned from accepting higher rental bids than the advertised price under a raft of housing crisis-fuelled reforms. Premier Steven Miles has unveiled a $160 million rental relief package – the latest part of his Labor government’s long-term housing plan. The extra funding will be distributed over five years among more than 20 existing supports and services, including bond loans, rental grants and rental security subsidies. Rental laws will be beefed up under the package, with the state to ban rent bidding and enforce hefty penalties for agents who engage or encourage it. “The biggest thing we’re doing today is banning rent bidding,” Mr Miles says. Mr Miles says it will be illegal for landlords to accept bids higher than the advertised price. “I have heard from too many Queenslanders who’ve put their application in for a rental property – thinking they would get it, only to find that someone else has bid more than the

advertised price for that rental and they’ve missed out. These new laws will stamp out that practice, will provide transparency for renters and provide an even playing field for everyone who wants that property.” Victoria last year became the first Australian state to make it illegal for agents and landlords to accept bids higher than the advertised price from tenants. It is already an offence in Queensland

for agents and landlords to solicit higherthan-advertised bids, with the law effectively closing a loophole that allowed prospective renters to offer more. “That’s incredibly difficult to regulate,” Queensland Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon says. “By banning all types of rent bidding, it makes it really clear that you cannot accept more than your offering price. We’ll

make sure that we put in the protections and the penalties to make sure that this law is upheld.” A portable bond scheme will also be established, allowing tenants to transfer their bonds when relocating from one rental property to another. In the interim, a bridging bond loan will be rolled out to assist households in affording the up-front cost of a new bond while still waiting for their old bond’s release. Other reforms include setting up a framework to allow landlords and tenants to agree to modifications, a prescribed form for rental applications, and a mandatory fee-free option for paying rent. Tenants also will have to receive 48 hours’ notice before someone can enter, and re-letting costs will be capped: based on the remaining time left on a fixed-term lease. Queenslanders will head to the polls on October 26, with a union-commissioned poll in December showing Labor trailed the Liberal National Party 52-48 on a two-party-preferred basis. – AAP

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

So, while we have been starved of waves of late, the Asu Surf Camp break last week in North Sumatra had 1.4-2.2 metre swell at 15 seconds. This wave is a pumping left-hander that has a beautiful barrel section and is hard to access. The ride is about 150-200 metres. Bottom line: no one was out there ... as opposed to the 60 to 70 surfers riding a crappy 1-2 ft (0.3-0.6 m) wind swell at Moffat Beach. Waves this weekend for sure. Enjoy!
