AGENDA

TROUBLES CONTINUE TO PLAGUE INTERCHANGE PLAN Now, a local MP is questioning why costs have more than doubled since initial costings were calculated, following an advanced business case.

P

lans for a significant interchange upgrade in the heart of the Sunshine Coast have been cast into further doubt, after the state government confirmed the project will cost more than twice as much as expected. The Sunshine Motorway, Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade (MRIU) Stage 1 is expected to have a price tag of almost $750 million instead of $320 million. Plans for the project have been plagued by troubles for months. Concerns were raised about the proposed route and then the federal government withdrew $160 million in funding, after its review of national infrastructure projects found it did not represent value for money. They came after the acquisition of properties and the start of early works.

The state government told Sunshine Coast News (SCN) last month that it was still committed to the project, but it could not say how it could be paid for or when work could be done. But there is even less certainty about the upgrade now, after a spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) confirmed to SCN that there is a revised cost of $743.6 million, which is a 132 per cent increase. “Since preparation of the project’s business case and cost estimate in 2020, significant labour and materials cost escalations and unprecedented property market conditions in the Sunshine Coast region have impacted the project budget,” the spokesperson says. TMR was asked whether the state government was considering abandoning

the project, amending the project for affordability, or whether it would try and persist with it, but SCN was not provided with answers. The department says it has acquired 84 residential properties for Stage 1, after stating last year that 132 homes had been purchased as part of the project since planning started in 2007. Resumptions are on now essentially on hold, but TMR continues to offer acquisitions to eligible property holders, indicating that the project has not yet been abandoned. “(TMR) is not actively resuming residential properties required for future stages of the MRI Upgrade,” the spokesperson says. “However, early acquisition is available to eligible property owners whose properties have been identified as Protected Planning (Category C) in accordance with TMR’s Approved Planning Policy.” Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson says she cannot understand why costs have more than doubled after an advanced business case study and initial costings. “Is the minister (Bart Mellish) seriously expecting people accept his explanation that a 100 per cent (plus) cost blowout is nothing unusual and part of normal market escalations?” the state LNP Member says. “This is just not good enough. “The people of the Sunshine Coast deserve to know how a much-needed project is in jeopardy due to a $400 million cost blow-out. This project was subject to a P-90 business case, which means it was supposed to be 90 per cent accurate costing. Does the minister believe that the passage of two to three years (since initial costings) causes a 100 per cent cost blowout and no one will question that? “There’s … still no commitment from

the Labor government as to what they’re going to do to fix this congestion point and when.” The detailed design phase of the MRIU is still underway and expected to be completed early this year. The upgraded interchange is intended to address a rapid growth in population on the Sunshine Coast. It’s a key junction connecting several major centres in the region and it was slated to link with other proposed transport projects, including a heavy rail line from Beerwah to Maroochydore. The design plans for the junction. The project webpage says it will “provide new north-south connectivity between key residential, employment, health and education facilities to support population, economic and tourism growth in one of Australia’s fastestgrowing regions”. “It is also the key to unlocking several significant road and rail projects in the region and is the trigger for major infrastructure transformation on the Sunshine Coast,” it states. Stage 1 of the project is set to include: a new road overpass to provide a more direct and efficient connection from Nicklin Way to Brisbane Road at Mooloolaba; a new local road connection between Karawatha Drive at Mountain Creek and Brisbane Road at Mooloolaba; new active transport provisions for pedestrians and bike riders, connecting Mountain Creek and Mooloolaba; and a new signalised intersection linking Brisbane Road and the new connection to Karawatha Drive, and provision of a two-way service road. If you had a copy of Guinness World Records from 2006, you might recognise the tallest man in the world at the time: Bao Xishun. But what you may not have heard about the tallest man alive is that he saved the day when a pair of dolphins were found to have swallowed plastic shards that could not be extracted from their stomachs using standard instruments. Bao’s unusually long arm proved a more effective tool, and he saved the lives of both creatures.

‘FLIPPING-GOOD’ RENOVATION ADVICE Whether transforming spaces or creating full-blown renos, expert know-how makes the process that much easier. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa

I

t’s no secret that the Sunshine Coast renovation revolution is red hot. It’s so hot, in fact, that we are the second-biggest spending region in Australia when it comes to renovating. Whether it’s as simple as a fresh coat of paint, new tapware, cupboard handles or a re-upholstered couch to a full-blown ‘property flip’, a renovation can be a fantastic way to add value to your property and improve the overall aesthetics of your home. There are so many ways to renovate, too. While some go down a do-it-yourself route, others may hire a designer and team of professionals to come in a get the job done. Any home-renovation project, however, will involve money and time.

10 My Weekly Preview | February 15, 2024

10.indd 1

But it seems Sunshine Coast residents are sparing no cost when it comes to creating their dream home. Data from Budget Direct shows that the Sunshine Coast has the secondlargest spend per person when renovating, at $641. It is just behind Geelong in Victoria, which comes out as the biggest spender by population size with $725 per person going towards home improvements. When looking at the total spend, the data reveals that Sunshine Coast homeowners are spending more than $234 million per year on renovating. This places the region as the fourthhighest spender behind Brisbane, Sydney and the Gold Coast respectively. When it comes to creating a ‘dream

home’, designer Adrian Ramsey says its important to have a clear idea and budget in place.

“Take the time to put together your team: it’s about creating harmony between you, your designer and your builder” The Buderim-based designer specialises in luxury new homes and renovations and, using his unique ‘Design Magic’ process, is passionate

about helping people create their dream space that fits within their budget and wish list. Mr Ramsey says it is important to make the right choices in the planning and budgeting stages, and that includes if you choose to engage designers, suppliers and tradespeople. “Take the time to put together your team: it’s about creating harmony between you, your designer and your builder,” he says. “Like any team that’s well built, the magic comes when they are aligned with you, your wants, needs and values. “Look for experienced individuals or companies with positive reviews and a proven track record in Sunshine Coast renovations. myweeklypreview.com.au

“Investing in the right team will mean everything by the end of the project. “Put aside a realistic design budget and be prepared to sign a preliminary contract with a builder to work with you and your designer on the journey to your dream renovation. “Start with the design and ensure you are aligned here, then bring in the other members.” The accomplished designer is also set to host the upcoming Season 2 of Channel 9’s Dream Homes Revealed, which is expected to air later this year. The show is not only a visual feast of stunning homes but also an educational opportunity for those looking to embark on their own home transformation journey. “This season, we are excited to showcase even more diverse and inspiring homes that will not only captivate our audience, but also provide valuable insights for anyone interested in creating their dream home,” Mr Ramsey says. “The passion and creativity behind each residence truly make Dream Homes Revealed a unique and enriching experience.” When it comes to sprucing up the interior of a home, Caroline Dockray, from Cloth Noosa, says upcycling is an ideal way to achieve a dream look. Specialising is textiles, Ms Dockray says there are many ways to create a bespoke look within a home with the right fabrics, textures and décor. “The No.1 question we hear is: ‘Is it worth upcycling furniture’ and the question is a clear ‘yes’,” she says. “Creating bespoke custom furniture, anything is possible – breathing new life and value to the original, saving materials from landfill while using minimum new resources of the latest advance fabrics.” When giving advice to residents, she says there are a few simple steps that can be taken to reinvigorate décor. “Upgrade upholstery, change hardware, add a rug, new cushions and wallpaper,” she says. “Yes, wallpaper has made a major comeback.” Ms Dockray says wide, bold marine stripes, tone-ontone mini checks, chunky tweed blends, large-scale florals and ‘Coastal Grandmillennial’ are her top pattern trends for 2024. “Showcasing the latest fabric innovations with intricate weaves and rich textures are not just decorative elements but tactile emotional experiences,” she says. toptips ADRIAN RAMSAY’S TOP TIPS FOR SUNSHINE COAST HOMEOWNERS LOOKING TO CREATE THEIR DREAM HOMES THROUGH RENOVATING. 1. BUDGET – If you are looking to build or renovate, setting a realistic budget before you begin the project is important. Be sure to leave some wiggle room for unexpected expenses or contingencies. By starting with a clear understanding of your budget, you’ll be able to make informed decisions about materials, labour and other costs. 2. SUSTAINABILITY – Sustainability is another factor driving the trend towards renovations and interior design. Renovating existing homes helps to reduce waste and minimise carbon emissions, making it a more-sustainable choice. Embrace sustainability by choosing environmentally friendly and locally sourced materials for your renovation. Look for energy-efficient appliances, recycled materials and sustainable building practices. Remember, the most-sustainable house is the one

DO I NEED APPROVAL? Something else to consider when renovating is if you require council approvals or changes to your home insurance policy. Before you make changes to your home, check with your council to see if approval is necessary first. This will include if you are planning to add a structural extension, carport or swimming pool, removing trees, or building new fencing or retaining walls. Depending on the nature and extent of the work, you may

that’s already built. I love to create great renovations. It’s such a puzzle of space, needs and costs. 3. SET CLEAR WANTS AND NEEDS – Clearly define your renovation goals and priorities before starting the project. Determine which areas of your home are most important to you and your family. Whether it’s updating the kitchen, adding a new bathroom, or creating a more-open living space, having a clear vision will help guide the entire renovation process. 4. PLAN FOR THE FUTURE – Anticipate your future needs when planning your renovation. Consider how your family may grow or change in the coming years and ensure that your home design accommodates those changes. Planning for the long term can help you avoid costly renovations and ensure that your dream home remains functional and comfortable for years to come.

be required to lodge a development application. Sunshine Coast Council has resources available at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/development/building. Similarly, your home insurance may not cover you during a renovation period, so check with your insurer on your policy details. Some insurers may provide partial cover during renovations, while others may offer an additional separate cover applicable to renovation periods. Be sure to review your home and contents insurance yearly to ensure it’s up to date, especially concerning the value of your house and household items after a renovation. How much can I do myself? You may set out to complete a DIY renovation, but some jobs call for a professional only. For any electrical or plumbing work, be sure to contact a licensed electrician and plumber. Don’t attempt that work yourself. While those in the know might be handy enough to paint, lay flooring or put together flatpack cabinetry, if you come across anything you are not sure on along the way, always call in an expert.

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon (centre) joins others at a complex development at Yandina

A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS Funding for a new state government strategy aims to build and acquire more social housing to help the homeless and those struggling to rent.

H

omelessness services on the Sunshine Coast will benefit from the state government’s new housing strategy, which aims to build and acquire 53,500 social homes by 2046 and ban rent bidding. In the short term, the government will spend $2.5 million for an additional 20 per cent funding boost over 17 months for the

Coast’s specialist homelessness services. The money will go towards emergency accommodation and help for people to stay in rentals. Regional organisations to benefit include Youturn Caloundra, Kyabra Community Association Inc and inPlace, The Salvation Army Veteran Support Program and Cornerstone Sunshine Coast. “I know our region has seen an uptick

in demand for homelessness services and that’s why this additional funding is really important for the Sunshine Coast,” Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton says. “We’ve made huge strides with a new youth-focused accommodation in Nambour and more social housing, but this shot in the arm means we can give families and people sleeping rough that need more immediate support.” Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt is also backing the funding boost. “We all know that the Sunshine Coast is an amazing place to live but that also means there is pressure on our housing market,” he says. “There is no easy fix here because this is a complex issue, but we are taking this decisive action because every person deserves a place to live.” The support for homelessness services was just one of a series of strategic announcements made by the state government recently. Premier Steven Miles unveiled a $1.25 billion scheme as the latest reform in his Labor government’s long-term housing plan. The scheme will ensure Queenslanders who can’t access a rental or afford to buy are given “safe, secure and affordable homes”, he says. It comes after Queensland emerged as ‘ground zero’ of Australia’s cost-of-living

crisis, with a study revealing Brisbane led the nation in rent, energy, insurance and health price hikes. “This is a really ambitious goal but we have got the money on the table to make sure that we significantly increase the amount of social housing we have in this state,” Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon says. The government will aim to build thousands of social homes over the next five years, but the minister declined to quantify how many per year. She says construction delays, including high material costs and trade labour shortages, may affect the delivery target. “I want to be really clear, though, that (target) will be a little bit bumpy. We do need to scale up over time,” she says. There are 1000 social homes currently under construction. Queensland Council of Social Service chief executive Aimee McVeigh welcomes the announcement but wants the social housing target met. “Right now there are women with newborn babies living in cars, there are families living in tents, and older women couch surfing,” she says. CARING FOR OUR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS A Wishlist grant is funding a team-based program to ensure healthcare staff are looking after their own mental health and wellbeing.

A

new program is launching that is set to benefit local healthcare workers who dedicate their time to caring for others. Wishlist and Sunshine Coast Health are teaming up with Moving Mindz to launch the award-winning mental health and wellbeing program. More than 9600 Sunshine Coast Health

staff from Caloundra to Gympie will have access to a team-based program via a mobile app that sets daily nutrition, mindfulness, gratitude, sleep, movement, laughter and social connection ‘nudges’. Renamed Connect, Move and Motivate by local Sunshine Coast Health wellbeing ambassadors, this program was made possible as a result of a $125,000 grant from

Wishlist. Healthcare organisations, including Sunshine Coast Health, are built to provide person-centred care. But in providing that care, employees can overlook or deny their own needs – especially when it comes to their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Recent data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reveals that 4.2 million Australians, aged 16 to 85, have experienced a mental health disorder in the previous 12 months. This figure means organisations continue to face the challenge of measuring the mental health of their workforces. Sunshine Coast Health executive director – workforce Silven Simmons says the Wishlist-funded program has been selected in conjunction with extensive research, plus the consultation of health staff, wellbeing ambassadors and experts in this field. “We know that mental health has a direct impact on the quality of care delivered to patients, the way we interact with colleagues and those moments away from work,” Mr Simmons says. “The Moving Mindz eight-week program gives our staff a chance to rally their colleagues, set some personal and team goals, and take time out of their busy day to have some fun – which we believe are key to achieving personal and

organisational success. “What sets this mental health program apart is, we are able to measure and evaluate the mental health of our workforce, but also the effectiveness of the program – through highly credentialled research professors from Deakin University, RMIT University and more.” Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says the health charity is committing $125,000 to support three important initiatives within the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service wellbeing program. “We are excited for the launch of the Moving Mindz program and hope many of our 9600 local health staff take up the opportunity to connect, move and thrive,” Ms Rowe says. “The mental health and wellbeing of our nurses, doctors, allied health and operational staff within our public hospitals is paramount and we are proud to be able to invest significant funds to help improve wellness for our hardworking staff. “This program will be delivered via an app which we hope will create greater accessibility to ensure those who look after us are also being looked after.” In the past three years, businesses that have adopted the Moving Mindz program have won Best Mental Health Program at the National Safety Champion Awards.

Temper Trap. Inset: Lauren and Chris Hignett

LINEUP ANNOUNCED The Sunshine Coast’s newest entertainment venue for all ages brings a stellar mix of music artists to its opening weekend celebrations.

T

he region’s newest entertainment venue has announced its launch date, revealing an awardwinning lineup to headline the opening weekend.

Multi-award-winning Australian indy rock band The Temper Trap has been locked in to perform at the refurbished Birtinya-based entertainment venue, The Station, on Friday, March 1. The Station venue is the brainchild of

locals Chris and Lauren Hignett who took over the lease of the former NightQuarter space late last year. The husband-and-wife duo also run the Alley-Oops indoor skate park, as well as sports store Scooter and Skate at Birtinya. Mrs Hignett says The Station team has been working around the clock to ensure the venue is ready to open its doors next month. “The venue looks fantastic and we’ve spent a lot of time and money to ensure patrons have the best experience by investing in the latest sound and acoustic equipment,” she says. “Our commitment to supporting local suppliers in the food and beverage sector has also been a priority as we want to be known as the family-friendly venue which supports locals and we aim to deliver this across all parts of the venue. “Stage 1 of The Station will include a major concert venue, skate park, a scooter and skate store, pop-ups, a food truck precinct and a bar area.” Mr Hignett says he is thrilled to welcome such a high-profile Australian band to launch the opening night. “We had a ‘hit list’ of high-profile performers who we wanted for our launch night and The Temper Trap were right up there,” he says.

“They have made their mark on the national and international music scene for nearly 20 years and I think they are a great fit for our venue and the type of people we want to attract to The Station.” Renowned DJ Havana Brown and DJ Brooklyn are also set to perform on the Saturday night, with Raw Ordio and Ampersand on the Sunday of the opening weekend. Mr Hignett says the venue will also feature local musicians. “There’s a strong local flavour to our launch weekend with a number of Sunshine Coast-based performers on stage, including The Betty Taylor Band who will be supporting The Temper Trap … along with Jonny Sonic (The Potbelleez) who will be supporting both DJ Havana Brown and DJ Brooklyn. “We couldn’t be happier with the diverse range of music on offer for our opening weekend. “This is the high quality of performers which our guests can enjoy every time they visit our venue.” The Station will be a family-friendly, all-inclusive entertainment precinct operating six days a week. It is located at 201/8 The Avenue, Birtinya. For more information and tickets, visit thestationsc.com.au.

BIRTHDAY BONANZA Identical twin sisters beat the odds by giving birth on the same morning in Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

each other was not one they expected. “We magically fell pregnant at the same time, which was crazy,” Nicole says. Two years ago, the sisters gave birth to their first daughters within six months of each other. This time, their due dates were a

fortnight apart, but fate intervened on one Thursday morning when they gave birth just 22 minutes apart. “It was just meant to be,” Nicole says. “We’ve been hanging out on maternity leave the past two or three weeks, just nesting and waiting, thinking I was going to go at least a week before because our due date was 10 days apart. “But now she actually beat me by 22 minutes.” The twins say they were in disbelief about the coincidence. “I couldn’t believe it,” Renee says. “We’ve just been laughing about it all day.” Nicole started having contractions first, and Renee went to her house to look after both of their young daughters. Then Renee’s waters broke. The cousins, who also share the DNA similarities of half-siblings, were almost identical in weight. Nicole’s baby Zavian Dacy and Renee’s baby Ruby Toole were just 200 grams apart on the scales. The Sunshine Coast Health midwifery team is thrilled to welcome the two babies into the world. “I’ve never seen it happen and I’ve been a midwife for 18 years,” midwifery team member Nicola Hamilton says.

WORK OPPORTUNITIES The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce will receive up to $300,000 in funding over 18 months to identify future growth industries and lead job training and career pathways under a new committee. The Regional Jobs Committee for the Sunshine Coast is one of 12 across the state that will connect job seekers with local training and work opportunities. Data from Jobs Queensland predicts jobs growth on the Sunshine Coast will be the second highest in the state by 2025-26, with a 12.5 per cent increase in vacancies – or more than 22,500 extra employment opportunities. Healthcare, social assistance and aged care are tipped to become one of the fastest-growing businesses on the Coast. “As a strong advocate for opportunities to live and work on the Sunshine Coast, Caloundra Chamber is so proud to bring the Sunshine Coast Regional Jobs Committee to life,” Caloundra Chamber of Commerce CEO Brady Sullivan says. “The Sunshine Coast is forecast to grow by over 500,000 in the next two decades and we want to ensure our school leavers are aware of and equipped to dive right into local jobs.” Rockpool Residential Aged Care CEO Melissa Argent says it will need up to 100 on-site staff as its Caloundra centre grows.

MY OPINION

EDGY GOES MAINSTREAM

PULLING A NEW KIND OF SWIFTIE

Jane Stephens considers how temporary expressions of rebellion can last a lifetime in permanent piercing holes and tattoos.

Sami Muirhead will channel her inner teenager to share a new era in music with her daughter at the upcoming Taylor Swift concert.

R

emember when tattoos were a sign of rebellion? The time when to be inked was to be antiestablishment, a rogue, or edgy with a splash of criminality? Those days are long gone. Tattoos are very mainstream – to the point where among the youngsters, it is becoming a statement to be a cleanskin. Tattoos are like piercings used to be. The punk movement, which emerged in the 1970s when Britain was in a deep recession, began with radicals putting multiple holes in their faces and showing them boldly to the world. But pretty soon, what was edgy became mainstream and by the 1990s, plenty of men as well as women had holes in brows, noses, lips and especially ears. But now, piercings are much less numerous or a reason to raise an eyebrow. Tattoos are on a similar path. There may be some differences in perception, depending on the professional or cultural context but, overall, tattoos are considered a common part of modern Australian culture. Unless they are facial tattoos or otherwise confronting, tattoos are considered completely unremarkable – no longer screaming ‘rebel’ or ‘rocker’.

Some of the most conservative men and women I know have inscriptions and pictures on their skin. And even though Australia has no national laws that make it illegal for employers to ban visible body ink in their workplace or a venue to deny entry because of ink, rejections are relatively rare. There is now some suggestion the trend is abating. Micro tattoos – with tiny pictures, fine lines and two dimensions – are cool now. But it was once hip to get tribal bands on arms, moustaches on fingers and sailor-style anchors on shoulders. Those images have fallen from favour. Perhaps the micro art is the last gasp of the tattoo trend. Maybe the mini movement means we are past the point of peak tattoo. Or maybe people have run out of unblemished skin. One thing is for sure: we are in an era where those in their late teens are likely to have a parent with tattoos, and that makes them less attractive to those who want to rebel. Unlike piercings, you can’t just take a tattoo out. Absolute removal is impossible. Prevention is certainly better than cure. I like this axiom that my pretty, classy young friend used to explain her lack of tattoos: you would not put a bumper sticker on a Bentley.

W

e are all just living in Taylor Swift’s world. I am so intrigued at the obsession millions of fans have with the 34-year-old singer. My daughter turns 13 in a fortnight. She is a hardcore Swift fan, known as a ‘Swiftie’. My daughter listens solely to music performed by the star. The only thing my girl looks at on the internet is Swift. The only thing she really wants to talk about is Swift. Avalon sleeps in Swift pyjamas and makes TS friendship bracelets. When I was a teenager (insert the dinosaur jokes) I was crushing hard on Wa Wa Nee, Bananarama, Wham!, The Cure, Dolly Parton and Nirvana. I loved all sorts of music and artists. I would tear out posters from my Smash Hits magazine each month and stick them on my bedroom walls. My favourite cassette mix tape was one I made by recording Take 40 Australia, and had Come On Eileen and Careless Whisper on it. I played the field with my eclectic music taste. Not so my daughter. There is only one for her and it is the mighty Taylor Swift. The cat-loving American is a selfmade, world-wide phenomenon and has

entered her billionaire era. Her star factor is out of this world and is arguably bigger than The Beatles or Elvis Presley. I think this country singer and songwriter-turned-pop superstar and the most-famous woman in the world is wonderful. I am glad my daughter has chosen such a talented trailblazer to look up to. The singer has dozens of hits with clever and sassy lyrics and her fans love her vulnerability. She sets an example of prioritising time with friends and currently is dating a good-looking guy who plays American football in the unfortunately titled position of ‘tight end’. So, yes, we are lucky enough to be going to the actual Taylor Swift concert. I am losing sleep over what a middle-aged mum wears to the hottest gig in the country. I guess, if in doubt, Mum jeans are a trusty fallback. I reckon Swift would approve. But I am savouring every week of the countdown to the concert with my precious daughter, as I know one day soon I will not be cool enough to warrant an invite to social gatherings. For one special night, I will hold my girl’s hand and pretend we are both 13 as we dance the night away.

MY OPINION

MEASURE VALUE – NOT TIME, CLICKS, KEYSTROKES

AUSSIES’ GREAT CREDIT CARD BAIL-OUT

WORDS: Travis Schultz, managing partner, Travis Schultz & Partners

New data shows that we’re increasingly reaching for the ‘fantastic plastic’.

T

he work-from-home and flexible work dilemma has divided employers and workers. Social media headlines have been dominated by stories of large employers trying to convince (perhaps even ‘coerce’) their employees to return to the workplace, while workers who have benefitted from the work/life balance of telecommuting are clinging on to the arrangements by their fingernails. But there are evidentiary conflicts aplenty, and some studies have found that work-from-homers have been perfectly effective and employees’ quality of life has improved, while others have found that not only has productivity decreased, but that culture has also suffered. So, who do we believe? In 2023, articles on flexible and remote work and its impact on culture dominated the list of the ‘most-engaged’ stories on the Linkedin platform. The future of work is being debated like never before – from a four-day work week to work-from-home, telecommuting and flexibility. And while we must respect all sides of the debate, I struggle to see why we look to measure time, clicks and keystrokes when all that both sides should be concerned with is value creation. What ‘value creation’ looks like will vary from one business to another, and measuring it isn’t always easy, but organisations that make it their strategic focus will inevitably outperform their time-focussed competitors. Technology, training and balance are the keys to releasing the tension and this is my guess

M to what the near future holds. Organisations which want to emphasise collaborative practices will adopt policies of paying more to staff who work full time in the office. Most professional service employers will develop policies that enable a balance of remote and office-based work, by adopting technology-based measures of productivity. KPIs will shift to a focus on metrics of value creation, rather than tasks or time on the keyboard. Employees will make career decisions based on their personal circumstances and will sacrifice income or career progression if they value flexibility or family time more highly than their short-term career aspirations. In the future, I expect most professional services firms will forget measurements of units of time, clicks or keystrokes, but rather will have invested heavily in tech, systems, processes and policies that enable flexible but part-time work-from-homers to deliver measurable value, while providing employment conditions that respect a new post-COVID normal.

illions of Australians are relying on credit cards to bridge financial gaps, new research reveals. Finder’s Credit Card Report 2024 states that almost half of all credit cardholders (44 per cent) have made unplanned purchases on their card in the past 12 months. That’s 4.6 million Aussies who have been caught off guard by expenses in the past year. Nearly one-in-10 (seven per cent) – or almost 750,000 individuals – have turned to plastic after running out of money before payday, while one-in-five (21 per cent) got caught out by an emergency expense. A further 14 per cent got swept up in the sales, admitting to spending more than they could afford at events such as the Black Friday sales. Finder credit card expert Amy Bradney-George says that as expenses overwhelm incomes, Aussies are reaching for their credit cards to bail themselves out of trouble. “Stubborn inflation and aggressive interest rate hikes have weighed heavily on finances,” she says. “Savings are being depleted, leaving credit cards as many people’s only option to get by.” Women (12 per cent) are four times as likely as men (three per cent) to turn to plastic because they’ve run out of money before payday. Millennials are most likely to revert to their credit card in an emergency, with a quarter (25 per cent) saying they’ve done

this in the past 12 months. Ms Bradney-George urges Aussies to rein in spending and avoid discretionary purchases if they are concerned about meeting their financial obligations. “If you have credit card debt you’re paying interest on, you could consider transferring it to a card that offers an introductory zero per cent interest rate on balance transfers,” she says. “This gives you a period of time when you can repay what you’ve spent without the added cost of interest. “Just make sure you have a plan for repayments to avoid higher interest charges at the end of the introductory period. “If you’re feeling stressed or can’t make a repayment, contact your lender to find out what options are available – or contact the National Debt Helpline for free financial counselling (1800 007 007).”

Ingredients

Breakfast spotlight

• 2 eggs • 1/2 cup milk • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated • 4 slices of sourdough loaf • butter, for cooking • 1 avocado, sliced • 8 bacon rashes • 300g cherry tomatoes.

The Sunshine Coast breakfast culture is one that’s hard to match. With access to delicious, fresh homegrown produce and so many beautiful locations to choose from, it's no wonder we love to sit back and enjoy what’s on offer. Did you know Catbird at the Fairhill Native Botanic Garden hosts breakfast from 8am-2pm every Saturday and Sunday? This summer heat has our mouths watering over the house-made granola, Coyo coconut yogurt, seasonal fruit, nuts and seeds (pictured). Other menu items include fresh, local eggs, pancakes and brekkie burgers. Plus, Catbird serves Noosa’s Padre coffee and Little Wildling Co tea. Catbird is at 114 Fairhill Road, Ninderry or book a table at catbird.com.au.

Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 180C. 2. Place bacon rashes on a lined baking tray and bake in the oven for 10 minutes or until bacon is crispy. 3. In a separate tray, roast the cherry tomatoes with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkling of salt for 6-7 minutes until tender and blistered. 4. Whisk milk and eggs in a shallow bowl. Dip the sliced bread into the mixture, coating both sides. Sprinkle with cheese. 5. Heat a fry pan with some butter over medium heat, and cook bread for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden. 6. Serve with a side of bacon, sliced avocado and roasted tomatoes.

Savoury French Toast

Top tip

Serves: 4 | Prep time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 15 minutes This standard breakfast recipe gets a tasty update with savoury parmesan. The easy and delicious spin on French toast is ideal for those not so fond of sweets in the morning. This recipe is sourced from Seasons IGA. Find stores at Caloundra, Cooroy, Maleny, Noosa and Yandina. Visit seasonsiga.com.au.

You can use your leftover bread for this recipe, as it soaks up the egg and prevents it from being overly soggy when pan fried.

Plunge into a new morning brew The French press (or more commonly called the plunger) is one of the all-time classics in the alternative brewing department. This device has been around since the early 1900s and was designed to create great-tasting coffee in the simplest way possible. That makes it ideal for those who are looking for an easy way to make great coffee at home. First Batch Coffee Roasters, based in Noosa, recommends you add about two tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee into a French press (make sure you remove the plunger first). Then slowly pour 300ml of water (between 92°C and 98°C) over the coffee. Place the lid back on and allow to brew for four minutes before pressing the plunger to the bottom. Serve and enjoy on its own or with milk. Find more advice at firstbatchcoffee.com.au.

your home’s exterior. “Colour is personal and emotionally connects you to the home, so it’s worth selecting a scheme that you and your family love and that brings the best out in your home.” Andrea says that although neutrals are the idea base, there has been a significant shift toward darker colours being used monochromatically to create impact, moodiness and drama. “For homeowners who are inclined to use lighter neutrals for material contrast, there are warmer greiges [grey and beige], such as Dulux Dieskau, Winter Fog, Silver Tea Set and Tranquil Retreat,” she says. While colour plays a vital role in your home’s exterior design, the importance of product selection cannot be understated. Dulux colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr says there’s no hard and fast rule when it comes to selecting your exterior colour scheme. “Exterior colour selection is a personal choice and often hinges on other existing elements that your home has, such as exposed brick, roofing, downpipes, fascia, gutters, window awnings, decking and stone,” she says. “Understanding if the existing material’s colour undertones are warm or cool, or throw a specific colour, is vital to ensure that the paint colour scheme works harmoniously. “These relate to the exterior elements that cannot be changed easily.” Also consider the colour schemes of surrounding properties: “You don’t want to mimic your neighbours’ colour choices, but of course, you want to work in with the streetscape. “Once this is determined, select colours that you are drawn to that will work with other elements and features of

CULTIVATING JOY FOR RESIDENTS AT IMMANUEL GARDENS In the nurturing hands of Leah Davies, Immanuel Gardens Aged Care and Retirement Living transforms into more than just a place of residence. It blossoms into a vibrant, welcoming community in the heart of Buderim. For the past 12 months, Leah has started off her day by tending to the main entrance areas, clearing fallen leaves and tidying up. She alternates between lawn and garden maintenance weekly, handling tasks such as mowing, hedging, pruning, weed control, planting, mulching, irrigation and fertilising. That’s not all: she also dedicates time

to maintaining her tools and facilitating gardening group sessions with residents. Here, we get to learn more about Leah and why she loves her role. What’s something you look forward to every day at work? – Making a difference. Striving each and every day to make the gardens and outdoor spaces the best they can possibly be. I feel it’s so important to have an outdoor space that is inviting, calming and beautiful. If you had to pick one aspect of your job that you love the most, what would it be? – I really enjoy the gardening sessions I do with the residents. Every week, I have seen their confidence grow. Giving residents the

opportunity to do gardening tasks is so good for their health and wellbeing. It makes me happy to be a part of that. What are some of the challenges you face in your job? How do you deal with them? – The weather conditions keep me on my toes. If it’s dry, I race around trying to keep everything watered. If it’s wet, everything likes to grow twice as fast. Some days are also hot and humid, so it’s important to keep an eye on the weather and plan accordingly. What’s something most people don’t know about what you do? – Over the past year, I have been working on improving the soil within the gardens. Healthy soil is the key to thriving plants, as they can access the nutrients within the soil better and are more resistant to insect and pest attack. What makes you happy? – It makes me happy to see and hear about the joy that the gardens bring to the residents, their families and the staff. I have received so many lovely compliments from everyone. It makes those physically tiring days worth it. What’s one piece of advice you’d like to share? – Always take the time to stop and smell the flowers. It will do a world of good for your health. A recent study published in this year’s January 3 edition of The Lancet Healthy Longevity reveals a noteworthy finding for adults with hearing loss. The research has found that those who consistently use hearing aids may experience a remarkable 24 per cent reduction in the risk of mortality, compared with non-users. Numerous studies have emphasised the adverse effects of untreated hearing loss, including a compromised lifespan, heightened social isolation, depression and an increased risk of dementia. However, until now, there has been a lack of evidence demonstrating that the use of aids can potentially mitigate the life-shortening effects associated with hearing loss. The study involved 1863 adults with hearing loss, with 237 classified as regular aid users (defined as wearing aids at least once a week for five hours or half the time), while 1483 had never used them. The researchers observed an almost 25 per cent difference in mortality risk between regular users and non-users. This distinction remained consistent across various factors, such as the degree of hearing loss, age, ethnicity, income, education and medical history. Conversely, there was no significant

Giving eyebrows more substance

Why do royals suffer from melanoma?

As we get older, it is common for our eyebrows to become thinner. Due to the natural decline of testosterone (in men) and estrogen (in women) that begins in the 40s, eyebrows start to look sparse. Whether you battle with patchy, thin eyebrows, or simply want to enhance your natural features, cosmetic eyebrow tattoos such as feather brows may be just the solution. With more than seven years of experience and knowledge in eyebrow tattooing and removal, Signature Cosmetic and Beauty owner Sam Holmes believes that everyone is unique and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to cosmetic tattooing. A bespoke service is offered where your brows are designed around your individual facial features and skin tone. Sam is known for her natural tattoo style and was one of the first on the Sunshine Coast to offer the ‘combination’ brow technique – the salon’s most-popular eyebrow style that is suitable for everyone. However, as cosmetic tattoos fade and styles change, some people want to remove their tattooed makeup. That’s where non-laser saline tattoo removal comes in, giving you the opportunity to transform your look or create an entirely new one.

The Duchess of York’s recent melanoma diagnosis has sparked a surge of questions at SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre. Now, I’m no expert in the sunbathing habits of royals, but I can shed some light on the behaviour of melanomas. Melanoma happens when cell-repair mechanisms fail in the skin’s melanocytes, and they grow abnormally. Everyone has a risk of developing melanoma, but the level of risk varies widely. Genetics are important, with many genes involved. Some of us have known family history of melanoma but others can carry risky genes without being aware. People of European backgrounds are most likely to have these genes, especially Northern European. Sun exposure is the most important risk factor we can change. Damage to the skin’s DNA is caused by UV radiation. The more we’ve been exposed to high UV or the more sunburns we’ve had, the worse it is. As always, protect from the sun, keep an eye out for new or changing spots, and get a skin check if you are at risk.

In one year and out the other …

Dry eye disease, often attributed to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), is a prevalent global issue affecting millions, particularly in this digital era with increased screen time exposure. MGD disrupts the lipid layer of the tear film, leading to discomfort and vision disturbances. TEARSTIM with E-Eye IRPL offers innovative relief by targeting MGD directly. This innovative technology stimulates meibomian gland secretion, restoring the lipid layer’s function. By doing so, TEARSTIM alleviates dry eye symptoms, such as grittiness and blurred vision, while enhancing tear film stability. Understanding MGD’s impact is crucial. With about 80 cells on each eyelid, meibomian glands play a pivotal role in producing essential lipids for tear film lubrication. The proper functioning of these glands is integral to maintaining ocular health and comfort. By addressing MGD effectively, Tearstim not only improves patient comfort and vision clarity but also enhances overall quality of life for those affected by dry eye. This advanced approach signifies a significant stride in managing dry eye disease, offering hope and relief to individuals worldwide. EyeHub has the only ophthalmologists providing this unique treatment on the Sunshine Coast. Email concierge@ eyehub.net.au for further information.

Many patients are surprised at how quickly they can comfortably ambulate after an anterior total hip replacement. Patients are typically mobilised within hours of their surgery. Most of our patients usually rapidly progress to being independent on crutches and require them for only one to two weeks. There are many factors that dictate how long a patient needs to stay in hospital but generally getting back to your home environment as soon as it is safe to do so is an important component of your physical, as well as your psychological, recovery. Excessive physical activity in the first two months after a hip replacement is counterproductive. We generally recommend gentle walking and stretching. Many patients are safe to drive after just three to four weeks and can perform most of their everyday activities within six weeks. For patients who enjoy more extreme activities such as surfing, they should wait at least three months to return. All patients are different, and you should discuss your specific situation with your orthopaedic surgeon.

The spine is made up of multiple segments, with each made up of bones or vertebrae, joints, nerves, ligaments, muscles and discs. The discs between the vertebrae are the shock absorbers of the spine. They cushion the vertebrae during movement. The discs are made up of a jelly-like substance that can degenerate as part of the normal ageing process or become injured, such as during high-impact sport or heavy lifting. When this happens the jelly can bulge or herniate, sometimes leading to compression of the nerves. This can cause significant pain, pins and needles, burning and numbness down the arms or legs. Most disc bulges resolve themselves within four to six weeks. That can be aided with physiotherapy, rest, anti-inflammatory medications and even targeted nerveblocking injections. If these types of symptoms are something you are experiencing or they persist beyond four to six weeks and your quality of life is adversely affected, then seeing a specialist neurosurgeon about treatment options may be beneficial. That can be arranged by referral from your general practitioner.

It’s time to get that task of updating your estate plan off your ‘to-do’ list. Chances are, it’s something you’ve been intending to do but haven’t quite ‘got around to it’. Your Will and estate plan is something you should regularly review. As your circumstances change, so should your estate plan. In particular, the following events should certainly trigger a review: • If your executor dies or becomes unwilling or unable to act. • If a beneficiary named in your Will dies. • If you have made a gift of a specific asset or property and it no longer exists or has been sold. • If the family situation of yourself or any beneficiary changes (for example, due to marriage, the commencement of a defacto relationship, divorce or relationship breakdown or a beneficiary facing financial difficulty). • When any amendments are made to the law (for example, tax). • After the purchase or sale of substantial assets. • If you have established an entity (for example, private company or trust). • If you have changed your superannuation fund or more than three years have passed since you last made your Superannuation Death Benefit Nomination. Make sure your assets go where you want them to. Book an appointment today.

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Romance and fun are highlighted on Thursday. With Saturday’s full moon in your daily routine zone, it’s time to prioritise, organise and stabilise, but avoid being too impulsive about a complicated issue involving money. The stars encourage you to dream.

Bulls can blunder around being insensitive. This week you need to be extra responsive to the needs of children, teenagers and close friends, otherwise Saturday’s full moon could trigger an emotional drama. The more flexible you are, the quicker things will improve.

This week the full moon falls in your home zone, so get your house in order and tackle chores with extra Gemini gusto. But, if you spread gossip or jump to hasty conclusions, you could end up in hot water. Avoid the temptation to take shortcuts.

With Saturday’s full moon stimulating your conversation zone, communicating with other people will be turbo-charged and a close partnership should prosper. The planets also bring good fortune in the form of an international friend.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22) Lions love to live in luxury. Saturday’s full moon activates your finance zone and encourages your tendency to be hasty with cash and careless with credit. But Saturn is visiting one of your money zones, so clever Cats will resist the temptation to blow the budget.

VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)

LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)

SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)

Partnerships are highlighted this week, as the planets activate your relationship zone. Saturday’s full moon lights up your sign, so self-belief is the key to Virgo success and satisfaction. Don’t let annoying disruptions and minor matters rattle you.

The full moon illuminates your solitude zone and Venus is in your creativity zone, so spend some time on your own and let your imagination percolate. Activities like reading, writing, painting, drawing, dancing, playing music and meditating are favoured.

Tuesday highlights romance, flirtation, entertainment and good times. So loosen up, let your Scorpio hair down, and have some fun! Then Saturday’s full moon fires up your friendship zone, so it’s also time to review and renew your peer group.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)

When it comes to work projects and professional prospects, this week’s full moon is in efficient, no-nonsense Virgo. So people don’t care how funny, friendly and fabulous you are - they just want to know you can do your job promptly and competently.

This week there’s a full moon in your adventure/aspirations zone, and the Venus/Mars conjunction boosts confidence. So it’s a good time to grab the Goat by the horns and initiate some long-overdue changes - especially involving communication and community.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18) Saturday’s full moon stimulates your sexuality and secrets zones, so expect a dramatic week full of passion and/or intrigue. Also, with no less than five planets transiting through your sign (the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Pluto) it’s time to be creative, bold and brave.

Compassionate Venus links up with Mars in your humanitarian zone, so be proactive about helping others. Can you do some volunteer work or organise a working bee? Plus you’ll feel like daydreaming, visualising and creating even more than usual.
