Can you believe Easter is almost upon us? Where did the first three months of the year go?

Easter is one of my favourite times of the year. When the children were younger, it always meant a few days away together in the caravan – no phones, no technology, just some board games and lots of laughs. Now that they are older, we still love getting together over a lazy breakfast or afternoon barbecue to enjoy some precious family time.

We have some great stories for you in this edition, including a celebration of one of the oldest surfing competitions in Australia. The Pa and Ma Bendall event is synonymous with Easter on the Sunshine Coast and in 2024, it celebrates 50 years. What a milestone. Turn to page 12 for the full story.

THE SMOKING GUN OF FUTURE PROBLEMS

Experts warn that

today’s vaping menace among young Australians will lead to tomorrow’s major health issues if left unchecked.

Young Australians are being lured by big tobacco companies to take up vaping, doctors warn, as the federal government introduces new legislation with tough penalties to combat a growing national health crisis.

Health Minister Mark Butler says the bill he brought to the house recently will stop the importation, manufacture, supply and commercial possession of disposable, single-use and non-therapeutic vapes.

Under the crackdown, offenders could face up to seven years in jail or be slapped with fines of up to $2.2 million.

“The reforms are world leading. Vaping is a very serious public health menace and the rapid rise in vaping among young people is creating a whole new generation of persons with nicotine dependence,” Mr Butler says.

“That is why this bill is so critical to addressing these challenges now: the global health community is watching us closely. This is a crisis that deserves our national attention.”

He says some of the chemicals contained in vapes are used in nail polish remover and even to embalm dead bodies.

The latest national data reveals one-in-six high school students recently vaped, and young people who vape are three-times more likely to take up smoking.

Many vapes include ingredients such as diacetyl, which damages passageways in the lungs, formaldehyde, which can contribute to heart diseases, and the weed killer acrolein.

Australian Medical Association president Steve Robson has urged all MPs to support the legislation.

“Big tobacco profits from the misery of others and uses every trick in the book to hook young kids on vapes,” Professor Robson says.

“Fruity flavours, bright packaging, false claims that vapes are nicotine-free and vaping shopfronts within walking distances of schools are all within big tobacco’s arsenal of tricks.

“This is marketing sleight of hand at its absolute worst.”

The Australian Dental Association is warning vaping could lead to a host of oral-health issues in the next generation.

Mr Butler says enforcement will be bolstered by an additional $25 million for the Australian Border Force and an extra $56.9 million to the Therapeutic Goods Administration over the next two years.

The Australian Council on Smoking and Health urges parliamentarians to listen to the health experts and to stand their ground against the “current tsunami of big tobacco-funded, pro-vaping campaigns”.

The health body’s co-chief executive Laura Hunter says it is important to call out the deliberate confusion being generated by pro-vaping campaigns.

“We want big tobacco to butt out of children’s health and leave it to public health experts who have no vested interest,” she says.

The council says pro-vaping organisations commission misleading surveys and put out fake testimonials.

The only legal way to buy vapes will be therapeutically through a pharmacy, if the legislation passes parliament.

Since the January ban on the importation of single-use, disposable vapes, the Australian Border Force and Therapeutic Goods Administration have seized more than 360,000 vapes worth almost $11 million.

MORE AUSSIES LOOKING FOR A SECOND JOB

Millions of Australians are being forced to take second jobs to keep up with soaring costs, according to new research.

A Finder survey of 1,096 respondents revealed 32 per cent of Aussies –equivalent to 6.7 million people – feel financially pressured to look for a second job in 2024.

Nearly twice the number of women (41 per cent) feel they need to work more than one job compared to men (24 per cent).

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 970,700 people nationwide worked multiple jobs in December 2023.

Rebecca Pike, money expert at Finder, says a growing number of households are struggling to make ends meet.

“Many have no option but to take on a second job to keep their head above water,” she says.

Finder’s research shows it’s young Aussies who are feeling the pinch the most, with a whopping 56 per cent of Gen Z admitting they’ll need to look for a second job this year.

Licking machines Did you know?

It takes about 364 licks to get to the centre of a Tootsie Pop. That’s at least according to some studies. Engineering students from Purdue University designed a licking machine – built to function like a real human tongue – and found that it took an average of 364 licks to get to the centre of a Tootsie Pop: the Chicago-manufactured lollipop, available in Australia. For what it’s worth, 20 volunteers tried the experiment using their actual tongues and averaged 252 licks. And other studies averaged out to 144 and 411 licks.

A 50-YEAR WAVE OF TALENT AND CAMARADERIE

The Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest is Australia’s second-longest running competition, drawing boardriders from around the globe.

There is a swell celebration in the pipeline for an iconic surfing event as it prepares to mark a major milestone.

Held annually across the Easter long weekend, the event pays tribute to the region’s ‘grandfather’ of surfing as it showcases some of the best talent in the waves.

In 2024, the Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest will celebrate its 50th anniversary, with the breaks at Moffat Beach once again to host the popular event from March 29 to 31.

The Sunshine Coast Surfriders Association began the competition in 1974 to honour Charles Ben ‘Pa’ Bendall, who had died the previous year, and his wife Marjorie.

It is now the second-longest running surfing competition in Australia, surpassed only by the Bells Beach Pro.

WindanSea Surf Club has organised the competition for most of its 50-year history and club president Terry Landsberg says the event has gone from strength to strength.

“Fifty years has been a real credit to WindanSea running the event, not only because of its longevity, but also in regards to the level and quality of surfing that we see each year,” he says.

“It’s also been a real platform for a lot of emerging talent on the Sunshine Coast who are participating in great waves on the Sunshine Coast in front of huge crowds.

“It’s had some amazing surfers over the 50 years, including world champions, like Michael Peterson, Rabbit Bartholomew and Tom Curren.

“There’s been world-class, local junior talent coming through the event, including our club members Wade Goodall and Reef Heazlewood, who’s competing now in the Challenger Series.

“Joel Parkinson is a (three-time) past winner. In the women’s division, Kim McKenzie, April Bengtson, Connie Nixon and Sophie McCulloch are past winners.”

Mr Landsberg says as well as local talent, the competition lures in surfers from across Queensland and Australia.

“We’re expecting some past winners at the comp this year to mark the anniversary

and some will be competing, which is something to look forward to.”

The Bendalls settled in Caloundra in the 1950s and ran Harmony Lodge flats at Bulcock Beach.

They started surfing in their 50s, when there were only a small number of surfers living locally, and they encouraged and supported young surfers on the Coast to get involved with the sport.

In 1966, Pa formed the invite-only Moffateers boardriders club to promote sportsmanship and good behaviour among surfers, and also nurture talent for more challenging regional, state and national competitions.

communities not only in Australia, but also worldwide.

“This memorial contest acknowledges the commitment of Pa and Ma to the Caloundra community of surfing,” he says.

“We’re very fortunate that they chose to make the Sunshine Coast their home and provide the legacy they did for the development of surfing and young surfers here in the 1960s.”

WindanSea life member Laurie Jarman helped organise the inaugural competition half a century ago.

He made the esteemed competition trophy, which was first won by Gold Coast surfer Richard Harvey: the reigning Australian titleholder at the time.

“After Pa died in 1973, (we) decided we needed to do something to make sure his contribution to surfing wasn’t forgotten and we decided on a memorial contest,” Mr Jarman says.

“We wanted the emerging local surfers to see some of the more-experienced talent. So, the format was 15 invitees.

“They included state champions, national champions and overseas competitors – and then there was an initial surfout to get another 15 competitors to meet the 15 invitees.

“The kids were really stoked to see the big names of surfing here, including Simon Anderson, Terry Fitzgerald, Peter Drouyn, Rabbit Bartholomew, Col Smith and, of course, Gerry Lopez, from Hawaii.

“The $1500 prize money for the open men’s division winner was the biggest prize

amount for a surfing competition in Australia at that time.

“In the years since then, it’s been great to see our local talent take it out – like Dave Reardon Smith (six times) and Joel Parkinson, whose dad competed and who grew up with the contest in his own backyard.”

Mr Landsberg says this year’s event will be action-packed out of the water as well as in it, kicking off on Good Friday.

“It’ll be a great weekend – a lot of food, a lot of fun, music and, of course, some great surfing,” he says.

“The multicultural Festuri festival will also be running in conjunction with the comp in Moffat Park on Saturday and Sunday, so we’re really excited about that.

“On the Saturday night, there’ll be live music in the park with local band The Flying Pigs.

“Then the competition finals will be held on Sunday with presentations on the beach after the open men’s final.

“We’d love to see people from all over the Sunshine Coast join the celebrations.

“This is an exceptional, award-winning event and it’s a credit to WindanSea, our local community and the tremendous support from our local sponsors.

SURFING TRADITIONS MEET MULTICULTURAL CELEBRATIONS

Hot Cross Bun S’mores

Serves: 6 | prep time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

• 6 traditional hot cross buns, halved

• ½ cup Nutella

• 24 marshmallows

• warm caramel sauce to glaze.

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Spread the cut side of each hot cross bun with Nutella. Place the bun bases onto a

baking tray lined with baking paper.

2. Top each bun base with four marshmallows. Cover with the bun tops. Gently press to sandwich together.

3. Bake for five to six minutes or until the marshmallows melt. Brush the hot cross bun tops with caramel sauce to glaze.

Top tip: Enjoy immediately to experience the melted, gooey goodness inside.

KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE AROUND CHOCOLATE

It might be a deliciously divine treat for us. But with plenty of chocolate sure to be about over the long weekend, it’s a timely reminder of the dangers it can have on our cats and dogs.

Sunshine Coast-based Pet Health Insurance Services’ Vanessa Hennessey is reminding local pet owners to keep chocolate out of the reach of furry friends. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is poisonous for animals and can be potential deadly.  “Whether you’re storing chocolate gifts to give to friends and relatives, hoarding your own store or holding an Easter egg hunt, please ensure that you keep your pets away from chocolate treats this Easter,” she says. Ms Hennessey says if you suspect your dog or cat has accidentally had chocolate, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. “Theobromine poisoning is treatable,” she says. “However, the outcomes are always more favourable the sooner the pet is able to be treated.”

More than 200 members of the Sunshine Coast legal fraternity raised a record-breaking $50,000 for the Suncoast Community Legal Service at an annual wine dinner hosted by leading law firm, Travis Schultz & Partners. PATROLS ON THE HOP

The Easter break is always a busy time at the beach, but safety should be the top priority for us all when in and near the water.

Rough autumn surf conditions have prompted a reminder to beachgoers that a dip in the ocean can be deadly if they aren’t swimming at patrolled beaches.

Following a summer of increased drownings in Queensland, thousands of volunteer surf lifesavers and professional lifeguards are bracing for what is expected to be another busy and challenging Easter long weekend.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine

Coast regional operations manager Aaron Purchase says swimming between the red and yellow flags is always the best way to stay safe at the beach.

“I can’t stress enough how important it is for anyone heading to the beach to only swim between the red and yellow flags during patrol hours where lifeguards and lifesavers can see them,” Mr Purchase says.

“If the conditions are extremely rough, as we have experienced recently, staying out of the water can be the best option – no matter how confident a swimmer you are.”

Beachgoers can access the latest information about local beach conditions, including lifeguard patrol status, weather, swell and tide conditions, by downloading the Beachsafe app.

Volunteer surf lifesavers patrol major Sunshine Coast beaches every weekend and on public holidays from 7am to 5pm from the September school holidays to early May. This vital service supports professional funded lifeguard patrols which occur year-round.

Sunshine Coast Council’s $5.8 million investment in lifeguard services this financial year provides 34 permanent lifeguards, two supervisors, a chief lifeguard and a casual pool of up to 96 lifeguards during peak season,. The services are across 22 patrolled beaches from North Coolum to Bulcock Beach.

It also provides professional lifeguards with vital equipment they need to perform their duties, including jet skis, rescue boards, flags and first-aid kits.

INSPIRATION FROM THE ASHES OF BALI BOMBINGS

Bali bombing survivor Julian Burton is the special guest at the upcoming Buderim Foundation breakfast.

Mr Burton experienced the unimaginable when he suffered life-threatening, third-degree burns in the 2002 Bali bombings terrorist attack. Over his arduous rehabilitation, he was profoundly moved by the outpouring of support from his community in South Australia.

This experience ignited his passion for giving back, leading him to establish the Julian Burton Burns Trust in 2003. Buderim Foundation chair Rod McKinnon says the foundation is thrilled to have Mr Burton at the fundraising breakfast at Headland Golf Club on Wednesday, April 10.

“Julian’s story is one of resilience and optimism so we are thrilled to extend an invitation to the community to come and hear more about his extraordinary journey, where he will highlight the profound impact of gratitude, kindness, and purpose in overcoming life’s adversities,” he says.

EASTER LIFE-SAVING GIFTS

Young Coast patient promotes benefits of Children’s Hospital appeal.

Afour-year-old from the Sunshine Coast, who was given a diagnosis with only a 60 per cent chance of survival, has become a beacon of hope in the fight against childhood cancer.

Tessa Perry’s story is one of resilience and courage.

Now, the young fighter is rallying the community to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation this Easter.

In November 2023, after a trip to her local emergency department complaining of stomach pains, Tessa was diagnosed with stage-four neuroblastoma – a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

“Learning Tessa had only a 60 per cent chance of survival left us shocked, scared and absolutely terrified,” Tessa’s mum Renee Perry says.

Tessa has recently completed her fifth round of induction chemotherapy and is gearing up for a major operation to remove a main mass, followed by a challenging phase of at least two months in isolation to reset her system, and culminating in a complete bone marrow transplant.

“Being away from home during

Tessa’s treatment is incredibly hard, but the Children’s Hospital Foundation has been a lifeline, easing the burden and making our stays less boring,” Ms Perry says.

Now, Tessa and her family are stepping forward as the faces of the Sunshine Coast region for the Children’s Hospital Foundation Easter Appeal.

All donations made at Sunshine Coast Woolworths stores will go towards the Queensland Children’s Hospital to ensure sick children receive the best possible care and treatment.

Since 2016, more than $330,000 has been raised for Sunshine Coast children through the Easter Appeal.

Each year, Queensland Children’s Hospital has about 1696 inpatient admissions, 13,810 outpatient admissions and 550 emergency department presentations from children in the Sunshine Coast region.

Customers can purchase a $2 egg-shaped wall token or make donations to the Children’s Hospital Foundation at all Woolworths stores across the Sunshine Coast until April 2.

Locally, Queensland University of Technology research into 2020-2021 Census data shows that more residents of 4551 give to charity than elsewhere in the region. They’re also the area with the lowest median household income, which speaks volumes of my generous neighbours down Caloundra way.

Charities across Australia recently converged on Brisbane for the annual FIA conference.

I attended my first conference in 2004 to accept the Excellence In Fundraising Award for Wishlist’s first The House the Coast Built project.

I remember standing proudly in front of national and international charities, marvelling at the magnitude of the industry I’d found myself devoted to.

People give because of personal experience such as natural disaster or, as we see at Wishlist, a loved one experiencing a health crisis. So many Wishlist supporters find themselves vulnerable to accident or illness and choose to give back in gratitude, but also to help others going through the same experience.

Aligning with a charity enhances business reputation and increases employee satisfaction and retention.

Volunteering offers social connection, a sense of purpose, reward and quite literally changes our world. The charity sector supports the vulnerable, fosters innovation and creates positive change.

Jane Stephens reminds new councillors that ratepayers hold them accountable, and expect responsible, respectful discharge of their duties.

ow that the voting is over and the counting in done, the rubber has hit the road for those who wanted to be on our councils.

Each of those elected really wanted the job, and most worked like Trojans to impress us enough to put that magic number 1 next to their names. So, let’s now hold them to their words.

Imagine a panel of councillors who are each conscious of their role, cognisant of their responsibilities and respectful of those who put them there. This should not be a utopian idea: we should settle for nothing less.

It is not fantasyland to expect better than backbiting and sniping, dismissiveness and conflicts of interest on the down-low. In fact, the new councillors all sign a pledge that they will do none of these. The state government oversees our councils’ responsibilities and controls and recently passed a new code of conduct for councillors.

As we know, local government is far from trivial. Councils make decisions that have a direct effect on people. So, it is vital that councillors take it seriously. Their

work is for our collective benefit, after all.

Among the things the councillors and mayors must sign their names to are: to have transparent processes and make decisions in the public interest; to oversee sustainable development and management of assets and infrastructure; and to conduct transparent and meaningful community engagement.

The councillors and mayors also agreed to act in a polite, respectful, just and non-discriminatory way towards each other, council staff and the public. Here’s hoping in the rough and tumble of debate and disagreement, they remember that one.

It is not too much to expect that those who stood for election and achieved enough support to now be paid wages, that we provide through our rates, will put their hearts, souls and best behaviour into the job.

Part of their pledge was to engender and strengthen trust in the integrity of local government. Our system depends on us believing such authorities act for the greater good. If enough of us lose faith, anarchy is sure to ensue.

Let’s just hope that overall we have chosen councillors wisely.

o yourself a favour and embrace third place. I am not talking about medal podium finishes here but I refer to a new concept of a place you go to regularly and that makes you feel really great.

Your first place is your home or where you live. Your second place is where you go to school or work. So, the question is: when you are not at home or work or school, where are you? Mine may be driving kids where they need to be as they jokingly refer to me as their ‘Moo-ber’ (Mum Uber). But the concept of a third place has me hooked.

Your third place includes spaces such as parks, the beach, cafes, libraries or community centres. The idea is that your third place is somewhere you feel welcome and you do not need to spend much money to feel satisfied and part of a community.

Buying a latte is a treat many of us can afford. The French embrace a break from the rush of everyday life where they drink their short blacks out of real cups in a real café. Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it?

Remember Central Perk Café in TV sitcom Friends where we all wanted to go and hang out with our buddies? This is a

third place. So, I am on a mission to find my third place. It used to be Pt Cartwright where I watched my dogs run off lead. I knew all the dogs’ and dog owners’ names. I don’t go there much anymore as I find it too sad after the laws banned dogs off leash.

But there is an old, weathered timber bench at the Buddina boat ramp I have long looked at with fascination. A bunch of ‘salty old dog’ blokes meet there at dawn every morning with their cup of coffee from home and they just chat. They do not sit texting on their phones. They simply talk to each other. What a powerful concept.

I interviewed a lady over a decade ago who was part of The Monday Morning Cooking Club. In 2006, a group of Sydney Jewish women came together to share recipes and discuss food. They cooked, ate and told each other of their problems and highlights of the week. Fast forward to 2024 and there are many women in the club and they have printed endless cookbooks with recipes from hundreds of women spanning generations. What a wonderful way to start the week.

So as the world looms larger, let us all try to stop feeling smaller.

NAVIGATING MENOPAUSE

Awomen’s hormone journey is like an ocean tide. Symptoms come and go, and they are ever-changing. Sometimes it can be stormy. For others, it can be a peaceful and calm transition.

What is menopause?

Menopause refers to a life stage where a woman’s reproductive cycle slows, and their ovaries reduce their function.

Women are born with about one to two million eggs. These eggs steadily decrease as we reach puberty and travel through each menstrual cycle.

When supply decreases, typically the transition towards perimenopause will occur. It usually is first noticed in women in their 40s when there are changes in the regularity of their menstrual cycle. This can cause changes in the flow, frequency, length and timing.

Blood pathology can also check the levels of hormones, FSH and oestradiol.

As women start their journey through perimenopause, FSH levels will rise, and oestradiol levels will drop. Menopause occurs when a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual cycle.

During this hormonal change, many women may experience symptoms that can come and go at different stages, such as:

• hot flushes

• mood swings

• heart palpitations

• low libido, vaginal dryness and vaginal tenderness

• headaches, migraines or sleeplessness

• breast soreness, joint pain and muscle aches

• slowing of metabolism and weight gain

• brain fog, lethargy or low energy

• itchy and dry skin

• digestive and bowel movement changes.

CLARIFYING PROPERTY SETTLEMENT QUESTIONS FOR SEPARATING COUPLES

Is a property settlement the same as a divorce? No. A property settlement divides property between you and your former partner as a result of a separation.

You can start to negotiate a property settlement immediately after separation. A property settlement will divide your property, but you may remain married. It is important to get legal advice about the impact of remaining married, even if you have finalised your property settlement. This is particularly important for your future estate planning.

Does my superannuation have to be included in the asset pool? Yes.

Part of the process of negotiating a property settlement includes reviewing all the assets, liabilities and financial resources accumulated during your relationship.

Depending on your circumstances, superannuation may be treated differently because it is an asset you can only access when you reach a condition of release, but is still needs to be addressed in a property settlement.

We have always had separate finances.

Why do I need to share information now?

Family law negotiations differ to other

areas of law. Family law negotiations require all relevant information about the financial relationship to be disclosed –whether you have had separate finances or held joint accounts.

Family law matters fall under a ‘no fault’ jurisdiction. While some conduct is morally offensive, there is no ‘extra’ adjustment for what may be considered immoral conduct. There are factors that may be considered for adjustment, including domestic and family violence, and conduct that may be characterised as ‘wastage’ such as gambling.

We are amicable. Why should I speak to a family lawyer?

Family lawyers cannot act for both parties.

That is considered a conflict of interests. Even if you are amicably separating, each party has their own legal rights, interests and responsibilities in a property settlement.

Managing the risk of psychosocial hazards at work

On April 1, 2023, the first legally enforceable code of practice addressing psychosocial health risks at work took effect in Queensland.

The code is approved under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) and provides valuable information for employers on how psychosocial hazards and risks can be controlled or managed and can be used to help decide what’s reasonably practicable to implement.

The first step to ensure compliance with the code is to identify workplace hazards in your environment that could pose a risk or have the potential to cause harm. Common psychosocial hazards may include but are not limited to, high or low job demands, poor support, poor organisational change management, poor workplace relationships, including interpersonal conflict, remote or isolated work, poor environmental conditions, bullying, and traumatic events.

What does this mean for you? A mentally healthy workplace does not happen by chance or guesswork, it is therefore recommended that you familiarise yourself with the code of practice and conduct risk assessments on your environment so that you can put reasonable control measures in place to minimise any risk of harm to your team.

Talkin’ ’bout my generation … being skipped

With the ageing population, it is more common to assist clients in their 80s or 90s with a new Will. It is not uncommon to receive instructions from older clients to skip their children as beneficiaries and make grandchildren beneficiaries instead.

Recently, the NSW Supreme Court considered a ‘generation skipping’ Will. The two daughters who were ‘skipped’ weren’t happy about it and contested their mother’s Will. The NSW case did not have the ‘usual’ reason for generation skipping (that is, ‘my kids are retired now and don’t need it’). The daughters in the NSW case were not close to retirement age, four of the five grandchildren were under 18 years and there were some relationship issues between the deceased and the daughters.

The Court referred to the ‘social norm’ that parents, not grandparents, are primarily responsible for educating and maintaining their children. In this case, the daughters were successful in receiving further provision from their mother’s estate. Perhaps, the decision would have been different if the daughters were at, or close to, retirement age. Whether ‘generation skipping’ in estate planning is becoming a trend remains to be seen.

What is certain, is that each person’s estate plan is unique and requires careful consideration of all relevant circumstances.

Budgeting tips all businesses need to consider

Preparation is the key.

As a budget is used as a guide for your business’ finances, it is important to ensure that it is prepared properly.

Set aside ample time to prepare the budget and update it regularly, or whenever necessary.

Be realistic in your budgets.

Use historical figures if available as a guide to help you budget costs and sales.

However, always remember that historical data is only a guide.

You have to try and anticipate any factors and changes that can influence the future.

Allow for unforeseen expenditures.

It is inevitable that your business may, at some point, be faced with expenses that were not originally planned for.

It is a good idea to allow for some funds to be allocated as a contingency to meet unexpected costs.

Include input from others when preparing the budget.

They may be able to assist in preparing realistic figures that are attainable.

Furthermore, when they are included in this process, they are more likely to be motivated to help achieve targets.

Parental alienation and the law

Parental alienation involves psychological manipulation where one parent encourages a child to reject or harbour negative emotions toward the other parent.

An example of this can be where one parent consistently speaks negatively about the other parent in front of the child, or where one parent simply makes contact with another parent so difficult that the time between the alienated parent and child is not sufficient to maintain a healthy relationship.

Parental alienation does not encompass instances where a child decides to distance themselves from a parent due to their own experiences, such as witnessing family violence or having negative interactions with that parent.

Although the Family Law Act (1975) does not explicitly reference ‘parental alienation’, its fundamental principles are designed to address situations indicative of such behaviour. The Court has resources to address situations where a child’s relationship with one parent is being negatively impacted. These resources include imposing Parenting Orders and soliciting expert testimony to evaluate family dynamics.

If you think your child might be experiencing parental alienation, it’s important to get legal and professional help to protect your child’s best interests.

The team of experienced Pacific educators, led by Jo Belchamber, head of learning Middle College, will take on the role of teachers as researchers to investigate the power of self-regulated learning – in particular, metacognition across year 6-9 classrooms.

“The research is focused on the metacognitive strategies employed by students as they face academic

challenges, investigating the extent to which challenge activates and supports positive metacognitive strategies, like goal setting,” Mrs Belchamber says.

This project is based on the Science of Learning research that explores changes in the brain during preadolescence and adolescence that provide opportunity to establish neural pathways that enhance student responses to academic challenges.

“Through the Science of Learning research approach, we aim to assist our Middle College students to develop intellectual dispositions found within the Pacific Lutheran College’s Four Pillars of Learning: Learning to Be, Learning Together, Learning to Learn and Learning to Know and Do, which support our students to grow capabilities important for all dimensions of life,” Mrs Belchamber says.
