The Sunshine Coast is one of the regions that has benefitted from a ‘sustained societal shift’ that began as a flow-on from the pandemic.
The Sunshine Coast remains the most popular destination for hordes of people leaving capital cities.
Millennials are leading the exodus from capital cities to regional areas, continuing a trend that began during COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and one that has been fuelled by high housing and living costs.
But people fleeing the city are not going far, overflowing to nearby regions that make up the five most popular destinations.
People fed up with expensive rents and long commutes continued to abandon Sydney, accounting for more than two-thirds of those who moved to a
regional centre in the 12 months up to the end of March.
The exodus of people from state capitals is no longer a “quirky flow-on” of the pandemic but a sustained societal shift, Regional Australia Institute chief executive Liz Ritchie says.
“People are voting with their feet and making a very conscious decision to live in regional Australia,” she says.
“With high house prices and cost-ofliving pressures biting, many people are realising the regions can offer the lifestyle they want and the jobs they’re after – minus big-city problems.”
The Sunshine Coast remains the most popular destination for people leaving a capital city, while the Gold
Coast is proving particularly popular with millennials.
Both are within 150km of Brisbane, while other desired destinations are also close to their nearest capital, with Lake Macquarie, north of Sydney, another popular choice.
Greater Geelong and Moorabool, both within 100km of Melbourne, also made the top five most popular spots.
But there is a limit to how close people wanted to be, Ms Ritchie says.
“People living in ‘commuter belts’ on the outskirts of major metropolitan cities are relocating within a few years of moving there,” she says.
The institute’s regional movers index uses Commonwealth Bank data to identify growth trends and plan for infrastructure investment in the regions.
Sydney retained its top spot, shedding more residents than any other capital.
But its outflow dropped to 67 per cent from 89 per cent in March 2023, while regional NSW inflows went from 23 per cent to 39 per cent.
More homes needed to be built to stem the flow of young people and families pouring out of Sydney and costing the city its dynamism, NSW Planning Minister Paul Scully said recently.
“That key age demographic, 30- to 40-year-olds, have been leaving at twice the rate they’ve been arriving over the last few years,” he says.
The government has announced changes to planning laws designed to increase infill development in the inner city and eastern suburbs, rather than continue adding streets to Sydney’s sprawling western fringe in a bid to deliver 377,000 new homes in five years.
Young workers across the nation could soon get a pay bump as unions seek to bring 18-year-old workers’ earnings in line with the adult wage.
Unions filed a ‘groundbreaking’ application asking the industrial relations watchdog to abolish ‘discriminatory’ junior rates in retail, fast food and pharmacy awards and pay the full adult rate for workers 18 and over. Workers under the age of 20 in retail, fast food and pharmacy are paid less than the full adult wage.
Younger workers in those sectors across Australia will see a lift in wages if the case is successful, with benefits expected to flow onto enterprise agreements with junior rates. The proposed changes could also result in a pay bump of between five and 10 per cent for workers under 16 to 50 per cent of the award and a 15 per cent pay increase for 17-year-olds.
The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association national secretary Gerard Dwyer says some retail and fast food workers had many years’ experience in the sector by the time they were 18.
“If you’re of adult age, you should be paid an adult wage,” Mr Dwyer says. “There is no justification for them being paid 30 per cent less.”

National Blood Donor Week puts the spotlight on everyday Aussies who are saving countless lives with a simple gesture.
Every 18 seconds, someone in Australia needs a blood donation. Often, that donation saves their life.
In 2005, Sunshine Coast resident Chris Bond became one of those people.
Mr Bond is the captain of the Australian Steelers: our nation’s double gold medal-winning Paralympic Rugby Team and reigning world champions in the sport.
Currently in preparation with his team for the Paris 2024 Paralympics in August, it’s difficult to imagine Mr Bond as being anyone other than an elite athlete at the top of his game.
However, when he was 19, he found himself battling acute promyelocytic leukaemia, which required extensive chemotherapy and hospitalisation.
A bacterial infection then followed, resulting in the loss of his left hand, right fingers and both legs below the knees.
He does not know the exact number of
blood donations he received during his treatment and recovery, as there were simply too many to count.
“I couldn’t tell you, but I would say a lot,” he tells My Weekly Preview
“I was in a hospital bed for about 10 months straight.
“I’ve had over 60 operations and in the beginning, in ICU, I was on litres of bloods and antibiotics.
“I was in hospital for about three years [altogether].”
Mr Bond speaks frankly about the fact that without those blood donations from selfless strangers, he would not be here – something that he often reflects on today.
“In the beginning [of the treatment], you don’t know what’s going on but later on, you start to understand what unfolded and to know that hundreds of people gave their blood willingly to allow me to live, essentially,” he says.
“I wouldn’t have survived without it
been replaced by a much more altruistic motive, which germinated when Mr Carr worked as a theatre assistant in hospitals and continues to grow through his work in special education.
“Initially, I saw it as a way to address my own fears, but as a young adult working in the field and seeing the benefit for the kids, it spurred me on even more,” he says.
“It then became a combination of ‘I can conquer this fear, and I can do some good for those kids that I’m working with’. I saw those kids going off and having cancer treatments.
“I’ve told them at the blood bank they should try and get some goodlooking donors, and they should put out for some younger models, but it’s just something I want to keep doing for as long as they’ll let me.”
While Mr Carr donates plasma every 12 days, he can say with conviction that his needle phobia is well and truly a thing of the past, and he urges others to give blood donation a try.
“It’s so easy to do,” he said.

Those special gifts – the blood and plasma donations from people who donate regularly – are being celebrated this week as part of The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood’s National Blood Donor Week (June 10-16).
The occasion is an opportunity to recognise the Sunshine Coast’s donors.
It also aims to inspire others to join the community of blood and plasma donors who regularly save lives by giving 1.6 million donations across Australia every year, Lifeblood spokesperson Belinda Smetioukh says.
“One-in-three people will need blood or blood products in their lifetime, so we want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all our donors who made a difference – not only to their community, but to patients and families all over Australia,” Ms Smetioukh says.
“On the Sunshine Coast, our local donors are the lifeblood of our community. This National Blood Donor Week, we will be celebrating 41 locals who, this past year, have achieved a milestone donation of 200 or more.
“Between them, they’ve made over 11,200 donations.”
One of the most prolific of those milestone donors is Coast resident and special education teacher Patrick Carr, 55, who has completed more than 325 donations since 2006, and who has no intention of stopping any time soon.
Mr Carr admits that his initial motivation for becoming a donor was a little selfish. He was a self-confessed ‘needle phobic’, due to spending plenty of time in hospitals as a child, and he hoped that giving blood would help him overcome his phobia.
That fear, however, has long since

“Once you’ve done it a few times, you barely feel it. I seriously don’t feel the needle.”
Despite Lifeblood’s celebration of milestone donors such as Mr Carr, Ms Smetioukh says more donors are desperately needed.
“We are calling on people to become the lifeblood of Australia, the lifeblood of their communities and the lifeblood of those patients who need blood and blood products every day,” she says.
“This week, we still need 200 Sunshine Coast locals to roll up their sleeves and give blood in Maroochydore and Nambour.
“From cancer patients to road-trauma victims, people with blood disorders, surgical patients and new mums – blood is needed for someone, somewhere in Australia, every 18 seconds.
“It takes just an hour of your time to donate blood and every donation can help save up to three lives.”
For Mr Bond, the need for regular blood donations is, quite literally, always close to his heart.
He deeply admires his own father, who has given more than 100 donations, inspired by his son’s experience.
“People might say I’m extraordinary, but what my father has done is extraordinary and he’s saved countless lives,” Mr Bond says.
“I’m sure everyone has been affected by someone in their circle or extended circle who has received or needed blood – that could be you tomorrow.
“The roads are pretty dangerous and life’s unpredictable.
“And it’s something that everyone can do. Most people can go out and take a bit of time out of their day, which can actually really affect someone else’s life.
“So, I would highly encourage people to go out and give blood, if and when they can.”

A Sunshine Coast schoolgirl is racing towards fulfilling her dream of becoming an Australian Paralympian. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
Grace Brimelow has been working hard to harbour a dream she first had as a 13-year-old: to one day go to the Paralympics.
The now 17-year-old aspiring para triathlete can almost reach that dream after recently racing in Spain.
The World Cup race was her final opportunity to accumulate points to go towards her ranking that decides who will make the team for Paris 2024.
Flashback to September 2022 and Grace was starting to make a real name for herself, being selected to participate in a national para-development camp for triathlon. Now, after years of hard work and dedication to her training and racing, Grace sits third in the Australian rankings.
The Sunshine Coast Grammar School student was born with Cri Du Chat syndrome (a rare genetic disorder caused by missing pieces on a particular chromosome), which impacts her physical capacity and strength.
Grace placed first in her race in Vigo, Spain, backing up wins in World Cup and series races in Australia at Stockton and Devonport earlier this year.
Also a decorated swimmer, Grace had to choose between the pool and triathlon as qualifications for Paris were nearing.

“I love that it has three activities in one sport, which is pretty cool,” she says.
Grace’s mother Simone Pearce tells My
Weekly Preview that her daughter has now done all she can.
“All the athletes are able to use their best-three results for the year to accumulate points to rank them,” she says.
“For Australia’s purposes, if you are in the top five in the world, you automatically qualify to go to the Paralympics.
“Grace went to race in Spain with a plan to try and get some points to try and get up in the ranking. She’s got three from three, which is pretty good, and that last race currently puts her ranked No.3 in the Paralympic ranking. There are two races left in June that could change the result, depending on how the other athletes go, but she should stay in that top five or seven.
“We are hoping that she’s done enough to get picked.”
Ms Pearce says athletes who rank between sixth and ninth can still be chosen to compete at the Games, via discretionary selection.
This was also Grace’s first season racing after being reclassified to the PTS4 class for para triathlon. She is also one of the youngest triathletes currently racing.
“She was unable to race from July last year to a day before her race in Stockton in February when she was reclassified,” Ms Pearce says. “Grace’s disability is not one you can see. She’s a bit of a mystery box. She’s in PTS4 and she’s doing well in it.”
Ms Pearce says the plan now is for Grace to put her head down and train as if she is going to Paris. Grace says it would be a dream come true to be selected.
“It would be (so) incredible and I would love to experience what it’s like,” she says.
“I’ve always had this goal in mind when I wanted to go somewhere with my sport.
“So, that pathway that has led me, hopefully, to Paris. I would look back on my journey and think all of this hard work has paid off.”
The Twin Waters Residents’ Association recently held a safety forum giving the community an opportunity to connect with local police.
The forum, held in collaboration with officers from the Coolum Beach Police Station, Twin Waters Neighbourhood Watch and the Pacific Paradise Progress Association, follows recent public discussions on crime in the area.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson, who attended the event, says the region is not immune to crime.
“Thanks to Twin Waters Resident Association recently, a very informative crime forum was held with people sharing their stories and police giving an update as to where things are at currently,” Ms Simpson says.
“Neighbourhood Watch also provided a practical input as to community action to be alert in what’s happening in our streets.”
Meanwhile, Sunshine Coast Police are reminding residents to ensure property is locked and secured after an identified rise in thefts from multi-level and apartment complexes.
“Many crimes are opportunistic and by ensuring property and items are properly locked and secured, the chance of theft can be reduced,” Senior Constable Peta Schenk says.
“In a multi-residential complex, a lapse in security of communal areas, including garages, compromises the security of the whole building.
“Many high-rise break-ins occur through open or unlocked balcony doors and living or staying several floors up still means you should lock your doors.”

SCRGI treasurer Naomi McQueen says she was thrilled with the large and diverse crowd that turned up on May 29. She is also praising the presence of local government representatives, saying it is positively contributing to the effort to strengthen reconciliation in the region.
“The enthusiastic response to join the Aunty Betty Memorial Reconciliation Walk that we have received from our recently elected Mayor and councillors demonstrates that the Sunshine Coast is committed to moving towards Reconciliation,” she says.
Businesses and employees across the Glass House area have been recognised in the annual Small Business Awards Gala.
Almost 2000 votes were cast for the 90 businesses and 41 employees nominated for the ‘Glassies’ by their customers, peers and bosses.
This year’s Gold Glassie Business Winner is Club Glass House.
A raft of businesses from across Maleny, Montville and Glass House country were also recognised with silver and bronze awards.
The highly coveted gold award is decided by Glass House MP Andrew Powell, while the silver is people’s choice and bronze awards are chosen by Chamber of Commerce presidents.

“I host the Glassies each year to celebrate these small businesses and acknowledge the community’s appreciation for their hard work and dedication,” Mr Powell says. “It is always difficult to choose the bronze and gold winners due to the quantity and quality of entries, and we deliberate over the options for a long time before selecting the winners.”
Arts festival showcases work from residents living with a disability.
This month’s Graceville Arts Festival will provide an outlet for Sunshine Coast residents living with a disability or mental health challenge to showcase their artistic talents.

This year’s feature artist is awardwinning Landsborough artist Bob Maas who lives with a mental illness.
Mr Maas says he uses art as therapy – combined with exercise and maintaining good thoughts – to help him manage his stress.
He has been painting for 40 years, working with oils and pastels, and regularly takes part in exhibitions on the Coast and in Brisbane.
“My favourite spot to paint is up on the hill at Maleny and I choose jacarandas or a house as a point of interest,” Mr Maas says.
Inspired by artists Hans Heysen and Vincent Van Gogh, Mr Maas graduated from the Queensland College of Art with a certificate in Applied Art and Honours in Drawing, Painting and Illustration.
“Painting is a job now and that’s why I like it. I’m working for myself and that’s great,” he says.
School students will be among those to benefit from safety and accessibility improvements at a busy Bokarina intersection.
Upon consultation with the community, the Nicklin Way-Meridian Street-Beach Drive intersection has been identified for upgrades.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is undertaking detailed design work, which includes the removal of slip-lanes and traffic islands, reconfigured pedestrian facilities and line marking.
A reconfigured pedestrian crossing will remove the need for students to congregate on traffic islands, as they make their way to school.
“Nicklin Way is a heavily trafficked, urban arterial road that connects the coastal suburbs on the Sunshine Coast,” TMR regional director for the North Coast Region Scott Whitaker says.
The festival, now in its fourth year, is run by Lutheran Services’ Graceville Centre and will be open to the public from June 21-23.

Construction work on Stage 2 of the ‘regionally significant project’ is set to begin early next year.

Jane Stephens believes it’s time for Queensland to move on from outdated ways of controlling sharks that serve to ‘catch and kill’ other creatures.
inter has just made its resplendent entrance and we have already had the first of what is likely to be many whales entangled in Sunshine Coast shark nets.
This time it was off Caloundra, but it is a (un)lucky dip for where the next trauma will occur, with 18 nets coast-wide ready to catch and kill. It is time once and for all to get rid of shark nets. They are barbaric, a blunt instrument and so old-fashioned they are no longer relevant.
The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries says shark nets are not intended to be a barrier between swimmers and marine creatures. Its says nets do not prevent sharks entering an area but are merely meant to catch or interrupt them on their way through.
Beachgoers don’t know that. They think a net makes them safe. It doesn’t. And there is no evidence that swimmers are less safe in the water on beaches that do not have nets. Let’s lift them. Let’s move on and get real, given that shark nets catch too many other creatures on their way through as well – particularly the migrating gentle marine giants and, soon, their newborn calves.
A survey run by Independent Member Sandy Bolton in March found that threequarters of Noosa respondents wanted the four additional shark nets there removed.
Here’s hoping Ms Bolton will use her voice in state parliament to get action and clear beaches Queensland-wide of these cruel and indiscriminate torture devices.
Queensland is the only state left in Australia which leaves shark nets in the migratory path of whales. It is one of the few places internationally that uses equipment that is indiscriminate and therefore also catches and kills protected and endangered marine species, and not too many sharks of a size deemed to be dangerous to humans. There are 60 drumlines – baited hooks designed to catch and drown sharks. But they catch and drown any number of other species, too – from Noosa to Caloundra. We are some of the few jurisdictions who continue to use these as well.
But let’s start small and lift the nets –not just when the weather is foul and the government is fearful of damage to its equipment, but now that whales are on the move and fewer people are playing in the cooler water. It is right, humane and necessary.

ummer is my favourite season on the Sunshine Coast. But I do have a soft spot for winter. That’s because winter is all about what defines my weak spots: comfort food, cosy fabrics and couch resting for hours. In summer, I feel guilty if I am not outside soaking up our supreme sunshine and beaches. But in winter, my guilt goes out the door with my thongs and togs and I am very happy to hibernate. Winter is the ultimate weather for warm cherry pies covered in cream, hot sticky date puddings topped with ice-cream, and pears stewing in the oven before swimming in red wine and cinnamon. Nothing tastes better than a bowl of chilli con carne with corn chips and sour cream. Eat this bowl of comfort food around a firepit or maybe opt for a hearty stew mopped up with fresh white bread. This is living. Winter is also the best season for bringing out a prized possession: flannelette sheets. These are the unsung heroes of the season. If there was a fire in our house, I would save the kids and dogs and then the flanno sheets and photo albums. That is how high up the totem pole they are when it comes to hero worship.
And I am late to the party, but my recommendation for the cold nights is to watch Clarkson’s Farm on Netflix. Jeremy Clarkson, from Top Gear fame, hilariously captures his failures at farming a picturesque block of land in the Cotswolds in England. It is extremely funny viewing and good for the soul to see how hard our farmers work on the land.
Clarkson was just voted the United Kingdom’s Sexiest Man Alive for the second year in a row. He is weathered and 62 and beat Ryan Reynolds and Idris Elba to take out the top spot. That just proves funny is sexy. So, it is time to embrace winter and all the good things it brings: comfort food, sexy older blokes and flannelette sheets. Wintering is a new concept that means we go to ground and embrace being home and comfort creatures. Katherine May, the author of the concept, says wintering is those times in life where we feel out in the cold. Perhaps someone we love has passed away or we have been fired from our job. Going to ground mimics what nature does in winter to rest and restore life sources and heal in readiness for the sweet summer season around the corner. Imagine taking a pup to work every day!

I was lucky enough to travel to three of Europe’s most beautiful cities – Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna – while aboard a luxurious Uniworld River Cruise.

I started my experience with one night in Budapest before our river cruise, staying at the ultra-luxury Ritz Carlton Budapest and wow, what a hotel!

From Budapest, we cruised along the Danube, crossing into beautiful Slovakia, and spent the day exploring its capital city Bratislava. This charming city is filled with cobblestone streets, Medieval architecture and wonderful cafes and trendy boutiques.
This is one of the easiest cities to explore by foot as soon as you step off the river cruise and I recommend you hike to Bratislava Castle, which is perched on the hill overlooking the old town and the Danube for a great photo opportunity.
Our final stop was the Austrian capital
of Vienna, which is a city that is renowned for its classical music and stunning State Opera House. However, there is so much more to this city. Vienna is one of the cleanest cities I have ever visited, and the buildings and architecture are picture perfect.
You must visit the Grand Schönbrunn Palace and its regal gardens. You will need to pre-purchase tickets so that you do not miss out. Take a stroll down Stephansplatz and visit one of the elegant coffee houses for a Viennese coffee and some Sacher torte (it is delicious and indulgent).
A visit to Vienna would not be complete without a walk through the renowned Spanish Riding School and taking in a show. We stayed at the Marriott Vienna, which is a good-quality, four-star hotel, well located across the road from the Stadtpark – Vienna’s greenspace and a lovely area to bask in the sun and people watch.
If you want to splurge and stay at an iconic hotel, consider the Imperial Hotel or the Bristol Hotel Vienna. Be sure to bring your appetite as Austria is the home of schnitzel and strudel and it certainly did not disappoint.
