Welcome

T

I

s Sunshine Coast residents, we are accustomed to welcoming guests who want to visit our beautiful part of the world. After all, we have the best of everything – our scenic hinterland, our villages and larger towns and our magnificent beaches and coastline. Added to that are the people who make the Sunshine Coast such a great place to live and a friendly place to visit – our residents and business owners. Over the next 12 months, we have the opportunity to put out the welcome mat to our many guests who will be coming to the Sunshine Coast for the events being held across the region. We will be meeting, greeting and welcoming more than 150,000 participants plus their supporters who are here for 60 major events, plus a host of smaller ones. And chances are they’ll also be exploring all the Sunshine Coast has to offer during their stay. That’s worth tens of millions of dollars to our local economy. As hosts, we want to make our guests’ stay as enjoyable as possible, and we want to have some fun ourselves. So we are encouraging our community to join the celebrations of local, state, national and international sporting, music and lifestyle events and to say a friendly hello and lend a helping hand to our visitors. Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast are working together to ensure the celebrations are enjoyed by everyone. You’ll be kept up-to-date on what is happening and when, and how you can be part of the celebrations. In 2016 we are welcoming the world to the Sunshine Coast. And this is your invitation to join in.

his is a very special year for the region as we host an exciting raft of new national and international events, in addition to our already impressive events calendar. The events will be staged on a scale not previously experienced and will position the Sunshine Coast on the world stage attracting more national and international guests than ever before. Following the successful staging of the Tag Football World Cup, attracting teams from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand and several South Pacific countries, the Sunshine Coast will be a sporting hub in 2016 and will host new large-scale events including the Va’a World Outrigger Sprint Championships, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships and the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games. Events are important drivers of tourism. Research indicates three-quarters of event attendees would not have gone to a destination if not for an event. In addition, for 57 per cent of first-time visitors to the region, the event is the main reason for visiting and likewise for 69 per cent of repeat visitors. And what a setting… beaches, hiking, surfing, fresh local food; from relaxation to adventure – the naturally refreshing Sunshine Coast has it all. The only thing more refreshing than the water is the lifestyle. With its sunshine, endless coastline, lush rainforests and easy smiles, it’s a place where visitors feel like a local from the moment they arrive. Together with our volunteer ambassadors, tourism operators, Sunshine Coast Council and wider community, we strive to provide world-class service for these world-class events and invite the local community to be part of the thrilling action. Let’s roll out the welcome mat as the world is coming to the Sunshine Coast!

n 2016 the Sunshine Coast will host the largest ever portfolio of events, welcoming around 150,000 national and international guests generating about $100 million in economic activity – almost double last year’s figure. These events will generate fantastic opportunities and benefits for our community. The Sunshine Coast community has long been known Australia-wide for welcoming events to our region. We pride ourselves on being an eventfriendly destination - a reputation that has been 40 years in the making. Now we take that reputation on to the world scene. A year of achievement and excitement lies ahead. The economic impact of major events can be broad and far-reaching, for instance, our region benefits from increased visitation and also the localised expenditure associated with holding events. This additional spending can provide significant stimulus to local businesses and enhance the viability of the tourism and tourism-dependent industries. As well as enhancing the economic fabric of the Sunshine Coast, major events provide other positive outcomes for our local economy, such as promoting social inclusion, volunteering, well-being and cultural benefits. Major events bring communities together, foster participation, encourage healthier lifestyles and enable residents to gain a wealth of experiences that would otherwise not be readily available or accessible. 2016 is the year the Sunshine Coast becomes the regional events capital of Australia and we look forward to welcoming the world and rolling out the welcome mat to our local, national and international guests.

t My Weekly Preview we believe in the success of the Sunshine Coast, and this year’s full events calendar is something worthy of support and celebration – which is why MWP is a proud partner. Swim, bike, run, party!

T

he Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival has shown the same endurance as the athletes who compete in it. Starting in 1993 the event is now going stronger than ever and has become a fixture on the Australian triathlon calendar. With a motto of swim, bike, run, party – it’s easy to see the organisers and athletes are serious about their sport and having a good time. The Olympic distance Mooloolaba triathlon is held on a course that’s famous for its ocean swim and the great atmosphere created by thousands of athletes descending on this popular beach town. It’s perfect for everyone; from beginners to the most seasoned triathletes. There is something for everyone including the ASICS Mooloolaba Twilight 5km run, 1K Ocean Swim, Superkidz Triathlon and the Special Tri. The event also features the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup, where participants will see some of the biggest names in triathlon swimming the same waters, cycling the same roads and pounding the same pavement as their own course.

Name/Nickname? Caroline Steffen “Xena”. Age? 37. Where are you from? Switzerland. How would you describe yourself in three words? Single-minded, impatient, sensitive. How long have you been competing in your sport? Since 2010. How did you get started in your sport? I came across from professional swimming and road cycling. The only thing I had to learn was how to run. What’s your greatest achievement in your sport? ITU Long Course World Champion 2010/2012 IRONMAN World Champion runner-up 2010/2012 IRONMAN European Champion 2011/2012 IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Champion 2012/2014 IRONMAN Australia Champion 2011 IRONMAN 70.3 Champion Noosa Triathlon Champion 2010. What’s your ultimate goal in your sport? To be the best I can be every single time I am at the start line. What do you like most about competing? I like to challenge myself Favourite moment while competing? The last 1km in the run when you know, you’ve done it again. There is nothing better than crossing a finish line as a winner. Very addictive feeling! Worst moment while competing? When you can’t finish a race because of a mechanical (issue) on your bike or maybe some problem with your nutrition in the run. Do you have a pre-competition ritual or superstition? Not really. The last three to four days before a race it’s more a kind of routine I have. There are always the same pre-race sessions, same food for breakfast lunch and dinner, same process for getting all my gear, including my bike, race ready.

Athlete Profile

How strict are you on your eating regimen and what would an average meal look like? Pretty strict. I call nutrition our fourth discipline. My meals are very plain and simple. The perfect training conditions with countless options of groups I can join in and train with; like-minded people. If you have competed on the Sunshine Coast before what has drawn you back? I came over from Europe in 2009 and since then have never left the Coast again. I just love it here. What would be a good result for you in the Sunshine Coast event? To walk away as the world champion. How would you describe the Sunshine Coast in three words? Sunny, laidback, family friendly.

THE WORLD IS COMING TO THE SUNSHINE COAST

O

n January 1 the Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club launched its 100th birthday celebrations which will include hosting The Aussies in conjunction with the Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland surf clubs. No one knows the history of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club better than Ralph Devlin who has just released a book on the first 100 years. My Events asked him about the MSLSC and the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles. The club obviously has a proud history, but I suspect 2016 may go down as one of the most memorable years in a hundred of them. The club and the region have been honoured by the choice of the Sunshine Coast as the venue for the Australian Surf Life Saving

Championships. They were last here in 1980 on Maroochydore Beach and then the Gold Coast took over. This time we co-host with Mooloolaba, who hosted it in 1959, and with Alexandra Headland. It’s a joint venture arrangement. But essentially what carried the day with Surf Life Saving Australia was that surf life saving on the Sunshine Coast was going to be a hundred years old. Why are the surf life saving titles so important to the clubs and the region? It’s on a number of levels. Recognition of the region as a destination for the championships. Our titles in 1980 are regarded as one of the greatest titles ever. And I’m not being biased, I was the carnival organiser for the club at the ripe old age of 25 [laughter], so I was on a steep learning curve there.

It was at a time when the club actually hosted and had to put the bloody thing on. Nowadays it’s a much more sophisticated structure. Back then, Grant Kenny won the double in the Ironman – it was perfect. For three or four days we had this perfect weather, huge crowds. So, the recognition is incredibly important to the region. That recognition of surf life saving on the Sunshine Coast as one of the most viable and well supported areas of surf life saving in the whole country. I can attest to that. Our community really supports life saving and life saving events. And about 20,000 people will come into the area for nine days. That’s huge. Western Australia put a price on it back in 2008 – up into the tens of millions. This and the Queensland

he last time the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, known as The Aussies, were held on the Sunshine Coast, Grant Kenny won both the junior and senior titles to become a national legend. The region will relive those eighties glory days when surf life saving’s pinnacle event returns to the Coast on the Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba beaches The Aussies were first held at Bondi Beach in 1915 and they have since grown to become a major event on the Australian sporting landscape, in the same magnitude as the Commonwealth Games. More than 7000 surf lifesavers will represent 313 surf clubs in more than 380 events across nine action packed days. Showcasing Youth, Masters and Open competition, The Australian Surf

Life Saving Championships is the largest event of its kind in the world. Come and watch all the action and be

part of the ‘80s themed excitement as this iconic event returns to the Sunshine Coast for the first time since 1980. The two week festival includes: • Australian Youth Surf Life Saving Championships, 16-17 April • The Aussie Ocean Swim – 17 April • Australian Masters Surf Life Saving Championships, 18-19 April • Australian Open Surf Life Saving Championships, 20-24 April Events for The Aussies 2016 will be split between the three venues: • Maroochydore SLSC – Water events • Alexandra Headland SLSC – Lifesaving and board riding (dependent on suitable surf break conditions), boats will also be held to the north of Alexandra Headland SLSC • Mooloolaba SLSC – Beach events.

Sunshine Coast performance and community venues

P

erformance and community venues are a valuable asset of the Sunshine Coast. They are versatile, vibrant hubs of community, cultural and commercial activities including theatre, concerts, cinema, major touring productions, cultural initiatives, recreation activities, programs and workshops, school-based activities, conferences, expos, meetings and key community events such as formals, weddings, graduations and eisteddfods. Council’s community venues hosted almost 4300 events, attracting more than 638,000 patrons in 2015. Socially and culturally, these Coast venues are places for interaction and participation in the community and in cultural life. Experiencing a show extends beyond the stage and communities

can become enlivened by vibrant and diverse arts and cultural experiences. Economically, performance and community venues attract investment, growth and economic development. Council has five key performance and community venues: • The Events Centre Caloundra – Council’s primary performance venue welcomed 100,000 patrons in 2015 • Lake Kawana Community Centre – Council’s primary community venue • Coolum Civic Centre which has been newly refurbished and adjoins the upgraded 2.6h Jack Morgan Park • Kawana Community Hall • Beerwah and District Community Hall Council is also working with the Majestic Cinemas (formerly Nambour Civic Centre) owners to ensure this venue continues to contribute towards the revitalisation of Nambour.

Samuel Woldemanuel in last year’s event, the Ethiopian setting a new course record of 2:18:30. The festival includes a distance to suit every age group and ability, including the marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km and the 2km. Each road race follows the picturesque coastline

Superheroes Games

I

t’s not been dubbed the “Games for the real superheroes” for nothing. The Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games features the fittest and fastest police, ambos and firefighters. The first games were held in 1984 to bring police together under the common banner of sport – in 1999 it was expanded to include all full-time emergency services personnel. Now in its 16th year, competitors will be able to compete in more than 60 sports, everything from archery, to rowing and volleyball. Competitors vie for points in their events which go towards two trophies - the Australia New Zealand Police Games Federation Trophy and the Emergency Services Shield – which are retained by the winning jurisdiction for the period between each games.

THE WORLD IS COMING TO THE SUNSHINE COAST

Just cruising

S

ome big opportunities for Sunshine Coast businesses are on the horizon and they’ll be heading to our shore throughout 2016. The Sunshine Coast is fast establishing itself as a highly attractive cruise ship destination. “This is a terrific opportunity for local businesses of all types to reap the benefits from what will be an enormous increase in visitor numbers to our region over the next year and a half,’’ says Sunshine Coast Council chief executive Michael Whittaker. “The Sunshine Coast has world class tourist attractions like the Eumundi Markets, Australia Zoo, the beautiful hinterland and of course our magnificent beaches and towns right up and down the coast. “When passengers come ashore they’ll be looking to experience as

many of these terrific attractions as they can so this will be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to make a lasting impression on thousands of visitors from interstate and overseas.” Business sentiment As recent cruise passengers soaked up the sights, sounds and flavours of the Sunshine Coast, local businesses were also counting their blessings. P&O Pacific Pearl’s day-long stopover off Mooloolaba last year brought 1700 visitors ashore and a wave of business that was warmly welcomed by Coast retailers and tourist operators. “My two Mooloolaba retail stores had a combined increase in sales of 120 per cent compared to the same Saturday last year, with 86 per cent of that increase coming directly from the

cruise ship passengers,” says Sundaze Swimwear’s Fraser Green. David Jones, corporate communications manager for Carnival Australia which operates P&O Cruises, says the Coast earned a top rung passenger experience score for the superliner’s visit. “The Sunshine Coast received one of the best reviews among all of the ports where our ships come alongside or anchor in Australia and the South Pacific,” he says.

It’s a summer of packed programs of family-friendly events and activities scheduled to help you have some fun, be entertained and reflect on the year that’s gone and the 12 months to come. Activities include: • The popular Christmas Tree Trail, which features colourful and creative

trees lighting up the Coast • Various community carols and Christmas themed events • The spectacular, family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations.

LED lighting is used on all of the council decorated trees. Decorated trees include hoop, bunya, lilly pilly, fig and jacaranda, Norfolk pine, swamp and paper gums.

Christmas Tree Trail Sunshine Coast Council’s Christmas Tree Trail typically has 22 trees that light up progressively throughout the region. In keeping with council’s vision for the Sunshine Coast to be Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green, diverse – only environmentally-friendly

C

ompeting in an event or enjoying a festival is a great way to spend your time on the Sunshine Coast – but what are you to do when you’ve finished your race or the last song has been played? My Events has come to the rescue with the ultimate must-do list for our guests.

Beaches The region is blessed with some of the world’s best beaches, from the familyfriendly Bulcock Beach and Kings Beach in Caloundra to the popular stretches of sand and sea in Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland. For those who want to escape the crowds and enjoy some of the Coast’s secret spots, try Shelly Beach (also in Caloundra), Point Cartwright Beach or Mudjimba. Environment There are little environmental hideaways dotted right across the Coast, from the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanical Gardens at Tanawha to the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny. One thing they all share is leaving you relaxed and wanting to come back again and again. You simply can’t go wrong with Kondalilla Falls, Buderim Falls and the Foote Sanctuary of Buderim.

Or go straight to the source with a visit to Maleny Dairies, which is an awardwinning, family-owned business that produces permeate-free milk, glutenfree yoghurt, custard and cream. If you’d prefer to do it yourself, why not visit Strawberry Fields at Palmview? During the season, which reopens in June, you can walk the paddock and handpick strawberries. Attractions on the Coast way to see these giants of the deep within their own environment. From the boat, with just 20 guests aboard, you will see the whales at play and if conditions are suitable you will have the opportunity to get into the water with a guide and a floating safety line. Then it’s up to the whales. The experience is 100 per cent on the whales’ own terms but they are curious creatures, so the whales often swim closer to see who is hanging out in their domain. There are limited tours available this year, the third year the experience has been available, so book early – for more information: Visit sunreef.com.au or call and speak to one of the team on 5444 5656.
