I
’m the first to admit that my knowledge of home-based technology is limited. But the hot, summer days of late got me thinking: wouldn’t it be great to be able to flick the airconditioning on while at work to ensure the house is nice and cool when I arrive home. This is just one of the great things about home design in today’s world – not only is this possible, but there is so much more out there to make our lives that little bit easier. This month, journalist Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane takes a look at smart home technology. From the Tesla Powerwall to the Amazon Echo, which acts as a central control point for home devices, there are lots of technological advancements making their way into our homes. Also this month, we take a look at renovating the bathroom on a budget and educate readers all about the humble kitchen sink. When Donny and Amanda Clark found their future home, nestled between the beach and Twin Waters Novotel Resort, they knew it had great potential. They were attracted to the existing layout, which had multiple zones for their children. Amanda saw past the dated, cream and beige interior and put her renovating hat ton and got to work immediately. The pair enlisted Ben Dalton from Sunshine Coast building company Your Asset Renovations to oversee the work and the project got underway. Here, the Clarks share their story.

Q. Tell us about your renovation? A. This property received a complete renovation, transformed from a three storey, three bedroom and three bathroom home to a four bedroom, four bathroom home. Scope of works included new flooring throughout, sanding and polishing the timber flooring, a new kitchen, the addition of a butler’s pantry, main ensuite bathroom renovation, new laundry and powder room, repainting throughout, exterior painting and all new switches, down lights and fans. Plus, the addition of a guest retreat. Q. What is the secret to a successful renovation? A. Donny: Definitely project management. Ben did a fantastic job of managing our large 460m2 home renovation within the 11 week time frame, we even added quite a lot of extra’s to the project. Q. What is your favourite part of the renovated house?
A. Donny: The kitchen, living area. Amanda: Yes, the whole ground floor is a great space to enjoy. The kids can be in the pool or the media room while we’re in the lounge or kitchen, and the open plan design means we can all be together. I also love our butler’s pantry – it has so much storage.

Q. If you did it again, is there anything you would do differently? A. Donny: No. We are rapt with the result. Q. What advice can you give to other renovators: A. Painting It might not seem like a renovation project in the sense that you are not gutting something and replacing it, but painting is an effective way of updating something of old and making it new. Whether you simply want to replace that pale lemon yellow and baby blue colour scheme with a more neutral tone of greige, or the paint colour is looking a little dull in an older home, a lick of paint is a sure-fire way to give your home a brand-new feel without draining your bank account. Paint industry leader Dulux has released the upcoming season’s colour trends. Taking cues from texture and the beauty of nature, interiors will be soft this autumn. Dulux predicts that light and mid-tone hues, as well as greige, will dominate trends. Stemming from the 2017 Dulux Colour Trends’ Sentience theme, the autumn palette combines mellow hues with texture, according to Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. The key colours, including Dulux’s Parchment Paper, Beige Mystery, Pinkham and Suede effect in Eco Chic, are ideal for nurseries, she says. “Any of these colours would look beautiful in either a boy’s or
girl’s nursery as they are the epitome of gender neutral. “We’re seeing soft colours used more often in children’s spaces now, it’s less about traditional colours such as pinks and blues and these autumn hues are perfect if you’re painting before you know your baby’s gender. “Aim to reduce stimulating or strong contrasting colours and intense patterns in a child’s nursery or bedroom to create a calming ambiance. If the room feels a little too neutral, homeowners can add colours such as Pinkham for a touch of warmth and colour. These colours can also be easily adapted by adding accessories in blues or pinks, once a parent is ready to introduce splashes of colour into the room.’’
