inter is coming. I can feel the cold creeping in. The mornings are cooler, the evenings longer and darker. I’ve also had to dig out my favourite winter blanket from the back of the linen closet. It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of this season. Give me sunshine and warmth any day. However, there is one thing that I am looking forward to this winter and that’s the beautiful interior trends making their way into our homes. To achieve this, feature interesting bold shapes and a mix of materials such as concrete and metal to create your chic minimal space. • Art is an important styling element in any home and the construct trend uses it to reinforce the colour scheme, playing on shapes that draw inspiration from the influences of the Brutalism and Bauhaus movements. • Use copper details for a luxurious, rich highlight to juxtapose Dulux’s Construct’s cool colour scheme. It’s okay to mix metal finishes such as silver, platinum and copper - just use a light hand when adding them to the space so they remain a feature finish that enhances but doesn’t take over.

ON TREND On-trend Colour – Dulux Ahoy This deep and alluring blue is a great scheming choice to accompany spaces painted in a greige, cool white, metallic and concrete. It works well in any living, bedroom or formal space.
• Layer minimal furniture choices with practical side tables, keep to the colour scheme and incorporate forms that work with the architectural style. • Dulux’s Concrete and Copper Effect paints can be used on furniture details as well as walls to create unique bespoke pieces. Just make sure that if you are upcycling furniture such as a table that you add a glass top to safeguard the paint. For more on Dulux’s winter colours, turn to page 14.
Here are some of our favourite renovation tips that apply no matter what season it is: Determine what renovations are a priority – create a job list and number accordingly. Set a budget and stick to it.
Stick to the indoors Take on projects that are indoors, rather than outdoors during the colder months. If the weather is cold and blustery, the last thing you will feel like doing is spending hours and hours outside. Great winter projects include painting indoor walls, new flooring, internal structural changes and installing appliances and lighting.
All about heaters The Australian Government’s Your Home website provides plenty of information about heating and cooling the home. There are two main types of heating – radiant and convective. According to Your Home, radiant heaters predominantly heat people and objects by direct radiation of heat. Convective heaters warm and circulate the air in a room.
The website suggests the following: • In larger rooms with high ceilings, a combination of radiant and convective heating is best: • In small rooms, space convective heating is effective. • In larger draughty rooms or bathrooms, radiant heating works best. WINTER HUES – Dulux unveils this season’s colours
O
ffering a luxurious take on the industrial trend, leading paint company Dulux predicts that a moody palette with warm metallics will dominate interiors during this year’s colder months. Centred on raw, pared back beauty, this winter’s colour palette is derived from the 2017 Dulux Colour Trends’ Construct theme. Inspired by the renewed interest in Brutalism combined with the influence of the geometric shapes of the Bauhaus period, Construct offers a minimalist look with a focus on natural materials, structure and form. Dulux’s palette includes eight colours ranging from grey tones through to deep blues. Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr says the colours can be used in most interior designs. “Being predominantly neutral, they
are extremely accessible, from the lightest variation, Dulux Winter Terrace, a soft greige, right through to the darkest hue, Dulux Ahoy, which is an alluring deep blue.” She says incorporating neutral shades will assist in balancing deep colours.
