After all, there is no benefit in splashing a trending colour through your home if you don’t love the tone!

COASTAL COLLAB

Need some inspiration for the year ahead? My Renovation columnist, and Sunshine Coast landscape architect, Cassandra Fenaughty shares the hottest home trends for 2023.

With the new year comes new looks and, as we dive headfirst into 2023, we take a look at the trends that are evolving.

Whether you are undertaking a new build, or renovating an inside or outside space, it’s great to check out the trend forecasts. This year we expect to see a growing connection between coastal favourites.

WORLDLY INFLUENCE

Last year saw a continuation of our love for the coastal Hamptons look. There has been a graduation in the Hamptons style with an islander and eclectic influence coming through. Beige tones are being mixed with fresh whites, and darker tones of timber are starting to emerge.

AZTEC INSPIRED

It may sound like an odd combination, but the bold colours and shapes of the Aztec design complement mid-century modern style. So how do you introduce the Mexican influence into your home? Add splashes of colour through the use of décor accents such as floor rugs, cushions, paintings and interesting pendants, while vases, pots and plants can be introduced throughout the home and garden.

This classic style is being integrated with Greek Island feels, Mexican Aztec styles and elaborate Indian influences. The coastal Hamptons style is definitely flexible enough to be able to carry these more earthy and modern influences so that we can create our homes to suit our individual personalities.

TURN BACK TIME

On the contemporary style front, 2022 saw a touch of the 1980s design coming through. This ‘80s design will continue into 2023 where rounded shapes, geometric patterns and fun and vibrant colours will be featured. From the safer pastel blues and terracotta tones, to more flamboyant yellows, pinks and purples, anything will go, especially when it comes to accent chairs and soft furnishings.

GOING GREEN

Green accents and a nod to nature will continue and mid-century style furniture will continue to be adapted to suit both traditional and modern settings. Islander and exotic patterns and textiles will also be featured. Most importantly, a focus on sustainability and deglobalisation will heavily influence our choices in materials and furniture. We have all heard of the environmental impacts of fast fashion, this doesn’t only apply to

the clothing and fashion industry, it applies to our furnishings as well. People are becoming increasingly aware of the waste associated with disposable furniture. The commitment to timeless and quality pieces of furniture made in Australia, and preferably locally, is something that more people are now considering. It’s more cost efficient to upcycle a piece of furniture or to purchase a handmade and/or quality item than buy multiple cheap lowquality items over the years. By choosing a well-designed and timeless piece of furniture, trends can still be incorporated into the home by simply changing out or revamping accessories such as vases, throw cushions and wall art.

If there is one thing from this article I hope readers take away, it is to seriously consider sustainability when choosing building materials and furnishings.

Let’s embrace 2023 with a commitment to buy furniture we cherish and want to keep for many years, and possibly many generations. Let’s give furniture a new lease of life and let’s support locally made, quality sustainable furniture as best we can.

WELCOME TO THE MAGENTAVERSE

Pantone’s Colour of the Year is here, and it’s bright and bold.

WHAT IS VIVA MAGENTA?

It’s that time of year again –Pantone has delivered its annual colour. This year’s offering, Viva Magenta 18-1750, is described as vibrating with “vim and vigor”. The organisation describes it as a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal

of strength.

Further describing the colour, Pantone says: “Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. This year’s Colour of the Year is powerful and empowering.

“It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and selfexpression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundary-less shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a colour that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.”

Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr speaks with My Renovation about how to incorporate varying vibrant magenta shades into your home.

FOCUS ON SINGULAR FEATURE WALLS

Most of us like the idea of transforming a space with colour, but often at times we land on whites and neutrals as a safer option. However, incorporating deep and bold colours within the home doesn’t need to be intimidating and is an effective way to create a striking focal point in any room.

All-white rooms may provide a touch of light to the living space, but adding in a feature wall with a dynamic shade such as deep burgundy and magenta can work well to add a splash of colour, and can dramatically

change how the room feels and how you feel in it.

STICK TO SMALL ROOMS SUCH AS AN OFFICE OR BEDROOM

If you aren’t feeling bold enough to create a feature wall in your main living space, try a bedroom or home office first. Smaller rooms are the perfect test to see whether you are happy with your new eye-catching colour choice, before moving on to revamp a larger and more open space.

Vivid and deep-pink tones such as Dulux Scarlet Ribbons can bring life into your blank canvas and can help you feel more motivated and inspired.

It is important to consider the intent of the space that you are working with. A bedroom or home office are often spaces that you may go to feel a sense of comfort or a spark of imagination and creativity. Using warmer hues in these deeper magenta pinks can help to create a much more interesting atmosphere with depth and elegance.

REVAMP YOUR KITCHEN WITH FRESH CABINETRY AND BENCHTOPS

A fresh coat of paint is a fantastic way to give your well-loved kitchen a much-needed update. Colour choice in the kitchen should

always be based on the outcome that you are trying to achieve throughout the space.

For a darker hue, try a magenta pink tone on kitchen cabinetry – you could use this

Paired with more neutral based tones on other cabinetry, kitchen walls and trims, this can add a pop of colour to your home without a complete overhaul.

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR BATHROOM

Similar to the bedroom and home office, you can definitely be a little more daring in a bathroom, as most will only be spending a small

amount of time in the space.

A bathroom is truly somewhere you can make your own.

Trying a darker coloured magenta pink wall in this space can create a sense of joy and sometimes a cocoon effect depending on the light, as well as shift the mood of the room which can often be dimly lit and forgotten.

GET THE RIGHT PAINT FOR YOUR SPACE

If you are set on incorporating a magenta pink hue into your home, it is essential that you consider which style of paint is appropriate before you begin your transformation.

For feature walls, I would recommend Dulux Wash&Wear Low Sheen or Matt as a functional choice and then focus more on a higher gloss level for trim work. Keep in mind that a higher gloss will reflect more

light, and may make your new colour appear lighter.

If you are revamping your bathroom, make sure to use a product such as Dulux Wash&Wear +PLUS Kitchen&Bathroom which is designed specifically for spaces with a build-up of moisture.

Lastly, for a scarlet shade on doors or windows in your home, opt for Aquanamel waterbased paints which can be found in a variety of deep red and pink tones.

Basically, these LED lights emulate the light of the sun going down, helping our brains relax and prepare for a restful evening. When dimmed, not only does the lumen reduce, but so does the colour temperature.

SENSE IT

According to Houzz, many experts estimate that 40 per cent of our lighting bill comes from unoccupied rooms. This is where sensor lights come into play. Great for rooms such as the bathroom, toilet or laundry, these lights flick on and off as you enter and exit the space.

1. GREENS, SPICE AND EVERYTHING NICE

Terracottas and forest greens have emerged as one of the dominant colour palettes for the coming year. Sage kitchens and forest green bedrooms have already surged in popularity among the Houzz community with searches following, which are up by 339 per cent and 156 per cent more than the previous year, respectively. A clay-and-forest inspired palette complemented with colours reminiscent of spices such as mustard and turmeric yellows, burnt siennas and saffron pinks, is commonly used by interiors designers on Houzz, to warm up interiors.

DESIGN PREDICTIONS

With a community of more than 65 million homeowners and home design enthusiasts, and more than 3 million residential construction and design professionals around the world, leading home renovation and design platform Houzz has unique insights into how people are designing their homes. Here, the Australian and New Zealand editor Vanessa Walker, shares her thoughts about the emerging trends.

2. METAL MESH

The industrial metal mesh has transformed into a stylish feature, elevating some very ordinary parts inside Australian homes. On Houzz we see metal mesh incorporated into stairways, where it is used as the stair path or as a railing sandwiched between two steel frames. Aside from being visually appealing, the material’s detailed surface also allows

enough light to permeate and illuminate its surroundings. Designers on Houzz expect to see more of this trendy yet timeless material in 2023, woven into interior architecture and as a decorative accent in shelving display units, doors and more.

3. EXTRA COMFORT

With an increase in searches on Houzz for ‘banquette seating’

(up by 97 per cent), ‘bench seat’ (up by 88 per cent), and the return of the '70s ‘sunken lounge’ (up by 51 per cent), there is clearly a desire among homeowners to accentuate moments of togetherness. Demand for intimate zones that encapsulate the social enjoyment we once left home for will continue to be important in coming years.

4. BARKITECTURE

Designer doggy doors, customised dog baths, heated sleeping areas, and ingenious pathways for cats are already cropping up on Houzz. While the

trend may appear as pooch pampering, pros on Houzz say homeowners are requesting these customised spaces to make the chores of caring for their cherished pets easier. Moving through 2023, we’ll continue to see a growing number of exciting pet-friendly features that furry family members can call their own.

5. WINDOWS OF WONDER

Openings to urban greenery that draw the eye towards a perfectly-framed view are gaining traction in the Houzz community. In many densifying Australian suburbs, thoughtful window design, providing relief to the outdoors, are cropping up in circular forms or squeezed into surprising places where

they fit. This trend underpins the increasing embrace of biophilic principles, as homeowners look for ways to connect with the natural environment through their homes.

6. OUTDOORS GOING IN

For several years, indoor-outdoor living has been synonymous with Australian homes, with terms on

Houzz such as ‘coastal kitchen’, ‘decks’ and ‘outdoor dining’ topping homeowner searches year-on-year. Furniture designed to provide a seamless aesthetic between indoors and out is a trend beginning to work in reverse. Expect new outdoor furniture collections by leading manufacturers to put a spotlight on adaptability. We expect to see a shift of durable products that use fade-resistant fabrics, denser foam and sturdier construction brought into transitional spaces, edging indoors.

7. COLOUR BLOCKING DRAMA

Striking colour-matched interiors, particularly where the same colour is used on joinery adjacent to walls, are growing in popularity on Houzz. First served as a cost-effective solution to industry supply challenges, allowing for on-site painting and flexibility in last-minute adjustments. The clean, sophisticated look also addresses a way for designers and homeowners to make

Houzz say there’s been a resurgence of people looking to energise their spaces with colour, so expect more dramatic colour-blocking displays in kitchens, living rooms and wardrobes in 2023.

8. TACTILE WALLS

Fluted or ribbed ridges began to appear in glass or joinery, and now we see them enhancing ‘wall panels’, with the search term jumping up by 321 per cent. As enforced time at home led to the rejection of angles and sharp edges, these softer surfaces reflect homeowners’ wishes for a gentler, calmer sanctuary. Some of Houzz’s most saved bedrooms and living areas in Australia incorporate this sumptuous wall detailing, which tells us to expect more of this trend through the new year.
