’m not sure about you, but I’m still scrambling to finish my pre-Christmas tasks. This is one of the reasons I love compiling our holiday edition of My Renovation – it helps with planning. First things first. It’s time to give the house a good clean from top to bottom. Before you tackle any big jobs, start by making a list of the areas you want to deep clean. Divide your home into sections and create a schedule to target one area at a time. This helps prevent feeling overwhelmed. Before you start cleaning, declutter each room. Remove items you no longer need or use and donate or discard of them properly. This not only makes cleaning more manageable but also creates a more organised and functional space. Pay extra attention to fans and air conditioning units as they will be getting a good workout through the hotter months. Remove and clean the filters, either vacuuming or washing them. Wipe down the outer surfaces with a damp cloth. For fans, use a soft brush or microfibre cloth to gently clean the blades, removing dust.
Garden makeover Keen to green up your garden? Water is one of the biggest challenges gardeners come up against this time of the year. The heat quickly saps the life from potted plants, while heavy rains from summer storms can drown them. There are some plants that enjoy dry conditions and are therefore ideal for the gardener who may not remember to water their potted plants regularly in the summer months. They include dwarf

A general clean and tidy of the gardens and outdoor spaces will increase your home’s aesthetic. From here, there are any number of projects your could invest your time and money. Consider installing a shade sail to extend coverage on your patio or deck. Screening outdoor entertainment areas is another idea. You’ll find yourself spending more time outside without the worry of mosquitoes. For those lucky enough to have a deck or patio, create a magical retreat – string twinkling lights and add some comfy cushions and décor accents. For added aesthetics, why not install pathway lights, hang fairy lights in the trees, or place lanterns along the driveway?

HOW TO PREPARE FOR NEW CARPET Getting new carpet? The experts at Choices Flooring share their tips on how to prepare for installation. 1. If you haven’t opted to have your existing carpet removed, the first step is to remove the material, including the underlay. Do not remove the wooden strips at the edges of the floor, commonly known as ‘smooth edge’. 2. Once removed, vacuum your floor area to remove dust particles. 3. Depending on the thickness of the carpet and underlay, it may be worth taking the room doors off to allow for a seamless installation. If new carpet is thicker than previous, the doors may need to be shaved after installation to allow for a

BOLD ENERGY PLAN A three-year project aiming to improve energy efficiency in older Australian homes has kicked off with a bold goal. WORDS: AAP.
A
project designed to dramatically improve the energy efficiency of Australian houses and reduce power bills is aiming to upgrade more than one million homes by the end of the decade. The scheme, backed by more than 74 organisations and delivered through the Race for 2030 co-operative research centre, launched in late October. It will target upgrades to more than eight million homes built before energy ratings were introduced in Australia. The
project launched on the same day as research from Monash University showed households could save $4.9 billion a year by switching from gas to electrical appliances. Industry and academic institutes will contribute to the Energy Upgrades for Australian Homes project, including environmental group ClimateKIC, universities in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and the CSIRO. Monash Sustainable Development Institute research deputy director Rob Raven said individual programs were already available to help Australians increase their homes’ energy efficiency but simple, integrated solutions were needed to help more households make changes. “A key focus in this project is on meeting people and communities where they are,” Professor Raven said. “We need to make sure home energy upgrades work in practice for real people with real lives no matter where in Australia they
