Underfloor heating brings comfort to your home by gently warming the floor surface, distributing heat evenly across the room. With its energyefficient design and availability to work with different flooring types, underfloor heating is a modern solution to keep your home warm.
Efficiency: Ensuring your home has proper insulation is important before installing heated floors. This will help retain the warmth generated by the
flooring, which makes the product more cost-effective and energy efficient.
Costs: Heated flooring can be costly, but it’s worth weighing up the long-term benefits. This type of heating can increase your home’s value and energy efficiency. Ensure your flooring has individual thermostat control for each area of the home, along with programmable settings. This way you can use the energy where and when you require.
Professional vs DIY: It’s important to speak to the experts before installing heated floors. We recommend hiring
experienced professionals for the installation process to ensure safety, longevity and effectiveness standards are met.
Compatibility: Heated flooring works best with certain types of materials such as tile, stone or engineered wood. You can also install heating beneath carpet, but it’s best to chat to the experts first to ensure compatibility with your chosen materials.
TIP
Budget doesn’t allow for heated flooring? Warm up your home by placing floor rugs in the living room or under dining tables and seating areas.
Justine Wilson, renowned stylist and owner of Vault Interiors, says natural elements will be popular this winter, infusing warmth into your living space. Bring the outdoors in by incorporating natural elements like wood, stone and dried botanicals into your decor. Wooden accents, such as rustic bowls or vases, add warmth and a touch of organic charm to any room.
Deep browns, rich rusts, and warm neutrals also evoke a sense of warmth and comfort, perfect for the winter season.
Home heating is becoming more popular in southeast Queensland through the use of modern fireplaces. Choose from wood, gas, ethanol or electric models that are available as freestanding or built-in varieties. We like the New Forest 1600 Electric Fire, which takes LED flame technology to new heights. The flame visuals flicker in deep, real fire colours. Visit britishfires.com/aus for stockists.
Bold, innovative and practical – these are the kitchen styles proving popular in 2024.
This design not only creates a sleek, cohesive look but also adds a sense of height and spaciousness to the kitchen. Tiles in larger formats, such as oversized subway tiles or geometric patterns, are particularly popular. These tiles offer a clean, uninterrupted surface that’s easy to maintain, while being visually striking. The continuity of the tiles from the floor up to the ceiling draws the eye upwards, making even smaller kitchens feel bigger. CURVED BENCHES
Island benches remain a central feature in kitchen design, but 2024 brings a softer touch with arched and curved designs. These curved island benches add a sense of flow, breaking away from the rigidity of straight lines. Wooden batten features, in particular, are dominating. The wood-look brings texture and warmth into the space. The battens can be arranged in vertical or horizontal patterns, adding an element of craftsmanship and natural beauty.
Another growing trend is the combination of solid colours with breakout patterns. This design allows for a striking focal point without overwhelming the space. Think of a kitchen with deep navy or forest green cabinetry, accented by a backsplash featuring a bold, patterned tile. Patterns can range from classic herringbone to mosaics, offering endless possibilities to express individual style.
While neutral palettes will always hold a place in interior design, homeowners are now also embracing bold, vibrant hues to create a statement space. Rich shades like emerald green, cobalt blue and Hamptons blue are proving popular. These colours can be applied to cabinetry, walls or even appliances.
anyone looking to elevate the look and feel of their home.

provide privacy and block out light. Hinged plantation shutters are attached to the window frame with hinges and can be opened and closed like a door. Bi-folding plantation shutters have multiple panels that fold together like an accordion, while sliding plantation shutters slide on tracks similar to sliding doors.
Sliding – Sliding shutters are an excellent option for large windows and sliding doors. These shutters slide on tracks and can be opened and closed with ease. Sliding shutters can be designed with wide or narrow louvres, depending on your preference.
Aluminium – Aluminium plantation shutters are durable, lightweight and weatherresistant, making them ideal for high-humidity areas like bathrooms and kitchens. They’re also suitable for outdoor use, making them a popular choice for patios and balconies. Aluminium shutters are available in a variety of colours.
Aluminium – All aluminium shutters are popular because of their durability and lowmaintenance requirements. They’re resistant to rust and corrosion, too. As well as being available in various colours, these shutters also come in a range of finishes, including powder-coated and anodised options.
– Poly shutters are made from a synthetic material that resembles wood. They’re moisture-resistant, making them suitable for use in high-humidity areas. Poly shutters are also resistant to chipping, peeling and fading, making them an excellent long-term investment.

Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creations
managing director Sean Lynch shares his industry knowledge to help you get poolready with budgeting, lighting and ways to improve your home and lifestyle.
Imagine it’s a hot summer’s day, and you’re lounging by your very own swimming pool. But when building a pool, it’s essential to understand what costs you might encounter along the way. There are several factors that can affect the cost of building a swimming pool. These include:
SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE POOL
The bigger and more elaborate the pool, the higher the cost, of course. Just think about it, a small and simple rectangular pool will generally be less expensive than a sprawling oasis with intricate curves and fancy design features. It all depends on your preferences and budget. If you’re looking to keep costs in check, you might want to consider a more modest size and a straightforward shape.
TYPE OF MATERIAL USED
The type of material used is a crucial factor because it not only affects the cost but also determines the durability and aesthetic appeal of your pool. Concrete, fibreglass, and vinyl are the most common options. Concrete offers the most flexibility in terms of shape and design, but it can be a bit more expensive. Fibreglass pools are pre-made and can be installed quickly, which can save you some bucks. Vinyl pools are the most budget-friendly, but they may require more maintenance and have a shorter lifespan. It’s
a balance between your budget and long-term goals.
Lighting, heating, and landscaping can turn an ordinary pool into a luxurious oasis. Imagine the magic of swimming under the stars with beautiful underwater lights, or having a cosy dip in a heated pool during those chilly evenings. Landscaping can enhance the overall ambiance and make your pool area feel like a tropical paradise. These additional features undoubtedly increase the cost, but they also bring joy and create a delightful atmosphere for you, your family, and your guests.
If your site is easily accessible for construction vehicles and equipment, it will likely reduce the cost and hassle of the building process. On the other hand, if the location poses challenges like rocky terrain or limited access, the cost might go up due to the extra effort and resources required. So, before you choose the perfect spot for your pool, take a moment to think about how it might impact the construction process and your budget.
Here are some tips for building a swimming pool on a budget:
Plan ahead: The more time you have to plan your project, the more opportunities you’ll have to save money. Rushing into a project at the last minute can lead to costly mistakes.
Do your research: Make sure you’re getting competitive quotes from multiple contractors. Don’t be afraid to negotiate.
Choose a simple design: As we mentioned earlier, more complex designs can cost more. A simple, classic design may be both cheaper and more timeless.
Consider DIY (but with caution): If you’re handy and looking to save money, DIY might be an option. Just make sure you understand the risks and know when to call in a professional.
The cost of building a swimming pool is no small splash, but with careful planning, research, and a realistic approach, you can make it happen. It’s an investment in your happiness, well-being, and a lifetime of unforgettable memories. Guarantee your spectacular new swimming pool stays sparkling clean all year round by purchasing a robotic swimming pool cleaner.
There are numerous ways in which a swimming pool can beautify your home. Having a swimming pool is an excellent investment that will last a lifetime. It serves as a great way of creating fond memories with your family and friends. Swimming pools can serve as a great source of exercise, relaxation, and entertainment, and they can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
The following are ways in which a swimming pool can help improve your home and lifestyle.
Aesthetics: A well-designed concrete swimming pool can add to the overall aesthetic appeal of a home. It can create a relaxing and visually appealing atmosphere that can be enjoyed by both the homeowners and their guests.
Landscaping: A swimming pool can serve as the focal point for landscaping, with plants and flowers adding to the overall beauty of the area surrounding the pool. This can help to create a cohesive and attractive outdoor space. With a range of materials, styles, and features available, you can create a pool that complements your home’s architecture and landscaping, adding a stunning focal point to your outdoor space.
Entertainment: A swimming pool can provide entertainment for homeowners and their guests. It serves as a perfect place to entertain guests. You can host pool parties, barbecues, or even just a relaxing evening by the pool with friends
and family. Pool parties, barbecues, and other gatherings can take on a whole new level of fun and excitement with a swimming pool as the centrepiece.
Exercise: Swimming is a great form of exercise that is low-impact and easy on the joints. Having a swimming pool at home can make it easier for homeowners to incorporate regular exercise into their routines, leading to improved health and wellness. Having a swimming pool in your backyard provides convenient access to this lowimpact, full-body workout, which can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and reduce stress.
Value: A swimming pool can increase the value of your home. For those looking to sell their home in the future, a well-maintained swimming pool can be an attractive feature that may help to sell the home more quickly or at a higher price.
Ambience: A swimming pool can create a relaxing and calming ambience, which can be especially enjoyable on warm summer days. The sound of water can be soothing, and the sight of a sparkling pool can be inviting and refreshing. In addition, a swimming pool can be a place for relaxation and tranquillity. Lounging by the pool, reading a book, or taking a swim can provide a calming and enjoyable experience. It can also create a peaceful atmosphere, which can be helpful for stress relief and mental health.
When choosing the best lighting for your swimming pool, there are several important factors to consider.
Type of Lighting: You can choose between LED, halogen, or fibre optic lighting. LED lights are the most popular as they are energy-efficient, long-lasting and come in a variety of colours. Halogen lights are bright and provide excellent illumination. Fibre optic lighting is popular for creating a unique, colourful effect.
Brightness: The brightness of the lighting depends on the size of your pool and the desired effect. Your pool lighting should be bright enough to see the pool clearly at night, but not so bright to cause glare or discomfort.
Light colour: This is one factor that people tend to overlook. You can choose from a variety of colours for your pool lights, such as white, blue, green, or even multi-coloured lights. The colour you choose will depend on the mood and ambience you want to create in your pool area.
The best lighting for your swimming pool, is a style that will provide a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for you and your guests.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s Budget commitment of $90.6 million to boost the number of skilled workers for the housing sector.
HIA managing director Jocelyn Martin said the funding meant more measures to help attract apprentices into the industry, plus fee-free training, streamlining the visa program for in-demand trades and an education and awareness program to assist participants navigate the complex process to be able to work on Australian building sites.
“The Federal Government has committed to a target of building 1.2 million homes over the next five years which HIA broadly supports given
Australia’s well-documented housing shortages,” she said.
“One of the key issues in building these much-needed homes is having an adequate workforce and without this, the government will fall well short of its housing target.
“It is therefore pleasing to see the Budget commitment to start to address these skills shortages in our sector as well as the recognition of this as a key area of government focus going forward.
“One of the key issues in building these much-needed homes is having an adequate workforce”
“We recognise the challenges brought about by the lack of skills won’t be fixed overnight but it’s encouraging to see dedicated government funding to help bring more workers into the industry.”
However, Ms Martin said the government had failed to include financial incentives for employers to take on apprentices.
“Without an employer, there is no apprentice and the financial incentives currently in place that have encouraged the employment of an apprentice and improve retention have proved invaluable to helping the construction industry to access more workers.
“At a time when it is critical to avoid anything which will impact the ability to supply homes, HIA is encouraging the Australian Government to maintain the current national funding arrangements for employees to take on apprentices alongside the Budget commitments.
“A strong construction workforce is the only way that Australia will ever solve the problem of housing affordability.”
