STYLISH AND SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR HOME
As environmental awareness grows, Australian homeowners are embracing sustainable renovation materials that combine eco-friendliness with both style and practicality.
Landart co-founder and creative director Matt Leacy says more and more people are leaning towards more environmentally ethical product choices in both home and landscape creation.
“It can often be quite expensive, especially as costs continue rising, to go with the most sustainable options, so we always advocate that our clients make changes where their design vision and budget will allow,” he says. “If we’re all making incrementally better choices, we are still having a positive impact on the environment.
“If you don’t have the luxury of a healthy budget, it’s still possible to make smaller cost-effective changes to planned renovations. We’re also finding more and more of our clients are opting to stay and renovate rather than moving on from properties in the current climate.
“Most of our clients are also more aware about ensuring their materials are ethically sourced. This includes timber, stone and other natural elements. While it’s often not possible to design and install an entirely sustainable space [when there are budget constraints and other issues], if we all make some positive changes to this end there’s a collective benefit to the environment. These better environmental choices are also the materials that are trending for renovations in 2024.”
HERE ARE MATT’S TOP CHOICES
FOR
RECYCLED OR ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTS:
1. Recycled timber – Recycled timber is making a significant comeback in modern Australian homes. Salvaged from old buildings, bridges and wharves, this material adds a unique, rustic charm to any space while reducing the demand for new wood. Homeowners are using recycled timber for flooring, wall panels and furniture, creating warm, inviting interiors with a story to tell.
2. Bamboo flooring – Bamboo, one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, is gaining popularity as a sustainable flooring option. Its durability, resistance to moisture and natural aesthetic make it an ideal choice for contemporary and traditional homes alike. Available in various finishes, bamboo flooring is perfect for those homeowners who hope to focus on eco-consciousness.
3. Reclaimed bricks – Reclaimed bricks are a testament to sustainable building practices. By repurposing bricks from demolished buildings, homeowners can achieve a timeless, industrial look while reducing landfill waste. These bricks are perfect for feature walls, outdoor patios and fireplaces, adding character and history to modern Australian homes.
4. Low-VOC paints –Indoor air quality is a growing concern for many Australians, and low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints are the perfect solution. These paints release fewer harmful chemicals into the air, creating a healthier living environment. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes, low-VOC paints ensure that your home is both beautiful and safe.
5. Eco-friendly insulation – Insulation is crucial for maintaining energy efficiency, and sustainable options like sheep’s wool, recycled cotton and cellulose are trending. These materials not only provide excellent
thermal performance but are also biodegradable and non-toxic, making them a smart choice for the environmentally conscious homeowner.
6. Solar tiles – Combining functionality with aesthetics, solar tiles are revolutionising renewable energy in home design. These tiles blend seamlessly with traditional roofing materials, while generating clean energy, reducing your carbon footprint and lowering electricity bills. Solar tiles are the perfect blend of sustainability and modern design.
7. Sustainable cabinetry – Eco-friendly cabinetry made from sustainably sourced wood or reclaimed materials is a growing
trend in Australian homes. They are stylish, durable and contribute to responsible forestry practices. Choose finishes that highlight the natural beauty of the wood for a timeless, elegant look.
Technology also finds its place in outdoor spaces in 2024, helping to bring time-saving and climate-smart functions. Smart irrigation systems, innovative LED lighting, clever water capture, solar and automated maintenance tools are being used in designs to enhance efficiency and help make property maintenance easier, with a reduction of energy and water use.

SPECIALISING IN KITCHENS & LAUNDRIES ON THE SUNSHINE COAST
Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creations managing director
Sean Lynch shares his expert advice on pool costings.
It’s important to understand that there are several factors that can affect the cost of building a swimming pool. These include:
Size and shape of the pool
When building a pool, it’s essential to understand what costs you might encounter along the way. Here, we break down the costs of building a swimming pool and provide some tips for saving money along the way.
The bigger and more elaborate the pool, the higher the cost, of course. Just think about it, a small and simple rectangular pool will generally be less expensive than a sprawling oasis
with intricate curves and fancy design features. It all depends on your preferences and budget. If you’re looking to keep costs in check, you might want to consider a more modest size and a straightforward shape.
Type of material used
The type of material used is a crucial factor because it not only affects the cost but also determines the durability and aesthetic appeal of your pool.
Concrete, fibreglass and vinyl are the most common options.
Concrete offers the most flexibility in terms of shape and design, but it can be a bit more expensive. Fibreglass pools are pre-made and can be installed quickly, which can save you some bucks. Vinyl pools are the most budget-friendly, but they may require more maintenance and have a shorter lifespan. It’s a balance between your budget and long-term goals.
Additional features
Lighting, heating, and landscaping can turn an ordinary
pool into a luxurious oasis.
Imagine the magic of swimming under the stars with beautiful underwater lights or having a cosy dip in a heated pool during those chilly evenings.
Landscaping can enhance the overall ambience and make your pool area feel like a tropical paradise. These additional features undoubtedly increase the cost, but they also bring joy and create a delightful atmosphere for you, your family, and your guests.
Location and accessibility of construction site
If your site is easily accessible for construction vehicles and equipment, it will likely reduce the cost and hassle of the building process. On the other hand, if the location poses challenges like rocky terrain or limited access, the cost might go up due to the extra effort and resources required. So, before you choose the perfect spot for your pool, take a moment to think about how it might impact the
construction process and your budget.
THE COSTS
When it comes to building swimming pools, there are three materials to choose from, each with its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. It’s all about finding the perfect match for your circumstances and the conditions of your very own backyard.
1. Concrete:
Concrete pools are a favoured choice for many pool owners in Australia. Concrete is renowned for its incredible strength and durability, ensuring that your pool will stand the test of time. One of the great advantages of concrete pools is their versatility. You can create a custom shape and size that perfectly matches your preferences and complements your property’s design. However, keep in mind that these pools take longer to build due to their unique nature and the materials involved. Consequently, they may initially cost a bit more than other
options, but the long-term benefits are worth considering. For a family-sized concrete pool, the price range for a pool and landscape packages is typically between $50,000 to $100,000 and beyond for larger builds.
2. Fibreglass
Fibreglass pools are a more budget-friendly alternative to concrete. However, it’s important to note that they come in pre-designed shapes that might not be easily customised to your specific needs. If you opt for a

professionally built fibreglass pool, you can expect to still spend around $35,000 to $65,000. While some manufacturers offer DIY fibreglass pool kits starting from around $20,000, it’s advisable to proceed with caution unless you have experience in pool installation. Safety, durability, and proper installation are paramount when it comes to building a pool, and poor installation could end up costing you more in the long

The vinyl-liner pools are the more budget-friendly option, starting at around $10,000. However, it’s essential to consider the maintenance requirements and installation rules associated with these pools. Whether you choose an above-ground prefabricated vinyl-liner pool or the in-ground option, they demand diligent
upkeep. Unfortunately, vinyl liner is not the strongest material, meaning your pool may require replacement after a few years of use. When considering long-term costs, a vinyl-liner pool may not be the most cost-effective choice.
What’s included in the costs?
A major part of the costs is the construction process itself. When building a pool, you’ll need to consider the excavation and site preparation. This involves digging the hole for your pool, removing any obstructions, and ensuring the ground is properly
STYLE & PRIVACY
levelled. The cost for excavation and site preparation varies depending on the size and complexity of the pool, as well as the condition of your backyard.
Next is the pool structure. This includes the materials used to build the pool shell, such as concrete, fi breglass, or vinyl. Each material has its pros and cons, and the choice will impact the overall cost. Concrete pools, for example, offer flexibility in design but tend to be more expensive than fi breglass or vinyl options.
And what about the pool features? Here’s where the fun really begins. Do you dream of a dazzling water slide, a tranquil waterfall, or maybe some cool LED lighting? These additional features can enhance your pool experience, but they also come with extra costs.
Don’t forget to consider features like pool heaters, automatic covers and energy-ef fi cient pumps, as they can all add to the overall price tag. Of course, we can’t forget about the pool
deck. This is the area surrounding the pool where you can relax, sunbathe and entertain guests. The cost of the pool deck will depend on the materials you choose, such as concrete, pavers, or natural stone. Each option has its own price range, and you’ll want to select one that fi ts your budget and desired aesthetic.
Another crucial aspect to consider is fi ltration and water treatment systems. A clean and well-maintained pool is a happy pool. To keep your pool water crystal clear and free from harmful bacteria, you’ll need a fi ltration system and possibly a water treatment system. These systems can vary in cost, depending on their complexity and the size of your pool.
Last but not least – the fi nishing touches. This includes landscaping around the pool, adding plants, trees and maybe even some comfy loungers and cushions. Landscaping costs can vary widely depending on the extent of the design and the materials used.
THE BENEFITS OF A SPA
Thinking about installing a spa but not quite sure if it’s worth the money? Read on to learn more about the benefits of having a home spa with expert advice from the team at Clark Rubber, Kawana.
In the eyes of many, spas are considered to be a luxury item. Although spa pools might be common features of resorts, tropical islands and health retreats, it’s possible to install one at your house with minimal effort and fuss. Portable and inflatable spas are also a very affordable way to de-stress and enjoy a hot soak after a long day. Or in warmer climates,
enjoy a cool plunge with the bene fi t of relaxing bubbles. But, did you know about these other bene fi ts they can bring to you and your home? Spa can add value to your backyard.
1. Recovery from exercise
Before thinking about the entertainment advantages of a spa, it’s important to consider the health benefits of warm water. As you may have seen on television, sporting professionals use hydrotherapy to repair their muscles after a match, helping to remove lactic acid. This is just one of the many purposes your new spa pool can be used for. After a session at the gym or an after-work run (okay, after-work jog), hop in the spa and relax. The warm water increases blood flow and releases pressure on tense muscles. Overall, this can help improve injury recovery as well as support ageing joints and muscles.
2. Stress relief
There is a reason why spas are mainstay features of resorts and health retreats. They are good for stress relief. According to the Australian Psychological Society, more of us are feeling more stressed, more often, mostly as a result of being

connected to work around the clock. After a long, hard day at work, there are few better options to relax than in a spa pool. The spa massage jets can take away the aches and pains while you have some quiet time to escape the world.
3. Helping sleep disorders
The hot water of a spa slows the heart rate, as well as increasing overall body temperature. According to the Sleep Health Foundation, adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep every night. However, for around fi ve per cent of the population, getting sleep is a constant struggle, with many counting the early hours pass on their alarm clock. While it might not work for everyone, spa pools have been known to support sleep. In a similar fashion to a shower, the hot water of a spa slows the heart rate as well as increasing overall body temperature - two important factors for getting closer to your forty winks.
4. Family enjoyment
While spas are basically hot water and bubbles, they can also be a great social location where you can catch up with loved ones. Of course, regardless of the weather or season, you can head out to your backyard and enjoy the pleasant environment of a new spa pool.
5. Complement the value of your home
Australia’s home prices continue to soar, with record sales recorded across the country. If you are interested in jumping on this wave, it’s important to do all you can to better the competition. While the obvious options are regular swimming pools or decks, many people forget about a spa.
CHOOSE RIGHT: POOL TILES
When planning your pool area, selecting the right tiles is essential for both function and style. It’s a decision that will impact your outdoor space for years, so making the right choice can bring everything together. Here, the team from Jerry and the Tilemakers Sunshine Coast provide their expert tips to help you on your pool journey.
DURABILITY AND SLIP RESISTANCE
Pool areas are constantly exposed to water, so durability and slip resistance should be top priorities. Porcelain and natural stone tiles are great options when it comes to fi nding products that are hard-wearing and resistant to harsh Australian weather conditions. To prevent accidents, opt for non-slip fi nishes that can help reduce
the risk of slipping, especially around the pool edge and entry points. Look for tiles with a higher slip rating, which is often measured by the pendulum slip test. For wet areas, you would want a rating of P4 or P5.
HEAT RETENTION AND COMFORT
Tiles around the pool can heat up signi fi cantly under the sun, making it uncomfortable to walk on during hot days. To avoid this, consider materials that don’t retain heat, like lightercoloured tiles or natural stone. Limestone, travertine and sandstone are popular choices for their ability to stay cooler in direct sunlight. Testing a few samples during peak heat times can give you a sense of which tiles will work best.
AESTHETIC APPEAL AND DESIGN
The aesthetic you choose for your pool area will have a major impact on the overall look of your outdoor space. From sleek modern designs to a more natural, earthy feel, tiles come in a wide variety of colours, textures and fi nishes. Consider how the tile colour will complement the blue hues of the pool water. Blue, green and neutral-toned tiles can create a
serene atmosphere, while bold patterns or mosaics offer a more artistic, statement-making look. Textured tiles not only look great, but can also provide a further non-slip element.
MAINTENANCE AND LONGEVITY
Another important factor is how much upkeep your pool tiles will require. Some materials, like natural stone, may require sealing to maintain their appearance and prevent stains from chlorine and saltwater. Porcelain tiles, on the other hand, are lower maintenance and can be a more costeffective option in the long run. Make sure to ask your tile supplier about the maintenance
requirements of your chosen material, so you can plan accordingly.
BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS
When choosing pool tiles, it’s important to balance the aesthetic and functional features with your budget. Natural stone may come at a
higher price, but its longevity and timeless appearance can be worth the investment. Alternatively, ceramic and porcelain tiles offer stylish looks but at a lower cost. Be sure to factor in installation expenses as well, since intricate patterns or mosaic designs can increase labour costs.
