As someone who lives and breathes interior design, styling and all-things renovation, I look forward to the annual colour releases.

This month we showcase one of Australia’s biggest reveals – the Dulux Colour Forecast.

The prediction for 2024 centres on three distinct palettes – Muse, Journey and Solstice. Each represents society’s appreciation and recognition of the key characteristics relating to these topics.

COLOUR FORECAST

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the annual Dulux Colour Forecast, the 2024 predicted colour trends reflect an inner-desire for positivity and nurturing spaces within our homes.

The yearly Dulux Colour Forecast stems from extensive research into both global and local trends that are anticipated to impact Australian interior design and our lifestyles.

The 2024 forecast includes three palettes: Solstice, Muse and Journey.

"There is a really important

element to this year’s forecast in the way it invites colour and texture into the home. We can see yellow and rich gold becoming more prominent," says colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr.

"Furthermore, the zesty green and clay brown shades that we saw coming through in the 2023

Colour Forecast are transitioning to a warmer space, featuring yellow and subtle red undertones.

"We are seeing some lightness in colour. However, the majority of shades are mid-tone with darker shades predominantly used for small accents."

Colour forecaster and stylist Bree Leech says tactility will be

another important focus for the year ahead.

“Overall, the 2024 palettes have become more sophisticated, while tonal palettes are still popular and particularly comforting. This year, we see a shift towards the use of multi-hue schemes, but crafted to reflect a balanced interior."

THE PALETTE: Solstice

What Dulux says:

Solstice is a toasty palette of rich browns, clay and warm neutrals with a sun-loving yellow as an accent, designed to evoke a comforting, familiar and inviting feeling. “Sun-soaked neutrals are influenced by a soft orange glow and paired with softer shades of pastel blues and citrus yellow,” explains Andrea. “This trend embodies a harmonious blend of cosy and calm styling elements, with captivating material highlights like natural stone, ceramic and highly textured fabrics.”

What Dulux says:

Taking inspiration from our cultural differences, it highlights rich mid-tone hues with yellowgreen at the heart and reds for contrast. “Journey celebrates the art of storytelling, where mythical iconography and cherished folk aesthetics find their rightful place, adding layers of depth and colour to your space,” Andrea says. “Olive greens and mustard yellow are prominent with dusty blues and rich burgundy acting as accents within a mix of faded and soft textured furnishings.”

What Dulux says:

Influenced by the nostalgia of the postmodern era, emphasising the 1970s, Muse is a celebration of modernising the free-spirited styles of the past. “While sustainability is an underlying theme for each of the 2024 Colour Forecast palettes, it’s particularly prominent within the Muse palette as we re-imagine past trends with vintage pieces to create an interior that feels unmistakably contemporary,” Andrea says. Muse boasts a range of colours, particularly in the mid-tone with warm brown and rich tans, accented with deep blues and soothing greens.

DESIGN DREAM

FORM MEETS FUNCTION

Continuing our design series, we present a practical yet elegant bathroom renovation that complements last month’s kitchen transformation.

Our client, seeking a forever home by the beach, required a bathroom upgrade that would harmonise with their new kitchen, as showcased in the September edition of My Renovation

The existing ensuite had some functional merits, but

certain aspects needed improvement. The compact basin was a notable issue, yet the toilet, basin and shower layout were well-conceived.

Given the concrete slab foundation, retaining the existing plumbing and drainage would minimise costs and effort.

Our renovation primarily focused on optimising the space and minimising cleaning. The first step was reconfiguring the basin and vanity area. We

created a more spacious vanity zone by utilising the entire wall, offering both form and function. For the shower area, our client desired something easier to clean than traditional glass panels. The solution was a walk-in shower with a half-height tiled nib wall and glass screen. This simplifies cleaning and neatly separates the shower and vanity areas.

To maximise the sense of space, we chose a wall-hung vanity, creating the illusion of a larger room by allowing the floor tiles to extend to the rear wall. To compensate for storage space, we added a vanity mirror cabinet. Material selection was crucial to our design. With matching grout, stone-look tiles on the floor and the main shower wall added aesthetics and practicality. A single wall of white tiles reflected light and enlarged the space. SALUTING SUSTAINABILITY

ANew South Wales builder has taken home the crown at the 2023 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards.

Acclaimed sustainable

builder Blue Eco Homes secured the overall Greensmart Home award for the Yellow Rock Passive House. The same home also clinched the GreenSmart

Custom Built Home award. Built on a bushfire-ravaged site in the Blue Mountains, this home will continue to inspire renovators and new home

builders alike. It was designed to sustainably re-inhabit the former dwelling’s footprint by incorporating the still-standing garage/carport and pool husk into the new property.

The site now contains a three-story, multi-generational, and fully accessible home that hugs the sloping bushland and maximises the block’s orientation for the passive benefits of natural sunlight. Triple-glazed windows, heat recovery ventilation and high levels of insulation add to the overall efficiency of this outstanding home.

A two-storey home constructed to work with a challenging landscape has scooped one of the major prizes at the Sunshine Coast Master Builders 2023 Housing and Construction

Awards. The Mons project in Buderim earned JT Homes the sought-after President’s Award.

Surrounded by natural bushland, it has polished spotted gum floors throughout, an ambient stone feature

CHOOSING STONE FOR YOUR POOL

One of the major decisions when building a swimming pool is what kind of look and feel you want your pool to have.

A choice that significantly influences this is the finishes of the coping, the tiles and choosing stone for your pool.

Using natural stones enhances the aesthetics while providing great durability and relatively low maintenance.

These natural products deliver an elegant feel to the concrete pool just as they did throughout the ages.

There is a broad range of granite tiles, travertine, Himalayan quartz, marble and limestone. Each has a unique look and feel and come in a variety of colours and sizes, allowing plenty of choices.

It will come down to your budget, maintenance preference and the overall look you are hoping to achieve.

Some stones only come in particular colours, and so if you are using a grey colour scheme,

your options may be in granite tiles or the silver travertine.

If you are looking for warmer tones, you may look at the Himalayan quartz, limestones, travertine or even almond granite.

The lowest cost tends to be the natural Himalayan quartz with granite, limestone and travertine filling out the midprice ranges. Marble can be the most expensive.

However, some prefer the look and these natural stones can add value to your project beyond their cost.

Once you’ve selected your stone, you can choose your size and profile. There is a wide range and the most common variations are usually available immediately with custom sizes made to order.

There are bullnose, and square-edged profiles as well as specialist pieces for grates, drains and capping stones.

Unsure what type of pool water is the best fit for your family? Let’s compare.

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium pools have surged in popularity across Australia. It’s easy to see why. The mineral-rich water can soothe skin conditions and promote relaxation. It feels great on the body too. In addition, magnesium pools require less maintenance and reduce the need for additional chemicals. However, initial setup costs can be higher and finding the right balance of chemicals can be challenging until you get the hang of the process.

CHLORINE

A classic choice, chlorine effectively eliminates bacteria and algae and is cost-effective and widely available. However, concerns over skin and eye irritation, as well as the distinct chemical smell, can be common. Regular monitoring and adjusting of chlorine levels will ensure comfort for swimmers.

SALTWATER

Saltwater pools provide a gentler alternative. They use salt generators to convert salt into chlorine, resulting in reduced skin and eye irritation. The water has a softer feel and a more natural taste. Saltwater systems are relatively low-maintenance, requiring fewer chemical additives.

Investing in a swimming pool? Here are 10 important points to consider before you sign on the dotted line.

1. RULES AND REGULATIONS

Research local zoning laws, permits and safety regulations

to avoid legal complications down the line. Your pool builder will be able to provide relevant

2. KNOW YOUR BUDGET

Create a realistic budget that includes the initial installation costs, as well as ongoing maintenance, landscaping and fencing.

3. DECIDE ON DESIGN

What type of pool do you want? An in-ground or aboveground pool? Rectangular, lap or curved? Do you want your pool to include a lazing deck, jets or water feature? Having a clear idea of how you would like the fi nished product to look will help the project get off to a good start.

4. THE BUILDER

Research and interview pool contractors, checking references and past projects to ensure quality

workmanship. Also ask family and friends for their thoughts and recommendations.

5. THE MATERIAL

Do you prefer fi breglass, tile or concrete? Do your research to compare the pros and cons, but quite often it will come down to personal preference.

6. SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Consider what type of fence you would like, keeping in mind that it needs to meet the legal requirements. You might also like to install a pool alarm or improved drainage.

7. ONGOING MAINTENANCE

Understand the maintenance requirements of your chosen pool type and equip yourself with the necessary tools and knowledge. It is also a good idea to calculate the ongoing associated costs.

8. ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Consider eco-friendly options such as solar-powered heating systems and LED lighting to minimise long-term operational costs.

9. LANDSCAPING

Plan the surrounding landscape to complement your pool, taking into account factors such as shading, privacy and aesthetic appeal. If your budget doesn’t stretch to working with a landscape architect, chat with your local nursery expert to determine the best type of plants for your project.

10. LOOKING AHEAD

Forward plan for any potential additions to make installation easier down the track. Incorporate the piping or electrical work in the initial building stage for items such as heating or the construction of a pool house or cabana. Don’t forget to think about future lighting, too.

It’s spring – the ideal time to roll up your sleeves and get your garden and outdoor area in tip-top shape ahead of the coastal summer.

DIY: TIMBER DECK REVIVAL

Give your outdoor deck a new lease on life with these quick and easy solutions:

Start by giving your deck a

thorough clean. A high-pressure hose will remove dirt, scum and old coatings effectively. If needed, use a deck cleaner to scrub away stains.

Inspect your deck for loose boards or damaged areas. Replace any rotting or warped boards to ensure safety and longevity.

To prepare the timber for staining or sealing, sand your deck to create a smooth surface. Start with a coarse paper and work your way to a finer variety for a polished finish.

Select a deck stain or sealer that suits your aesthetic preferences and provides protection against UV rays and moisture. Opt for a natural wood look or a colourful finish to match your outdoor decor.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying the fi nish. Use a brush or roller for an even coat, and be sure to allow suf fi cient drying time.

GARDENING TIP

Give your gardens some TLC. Spread a layer of organic mulch around your garden beds. This helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Consider eucalyptus or pine bark mulch – it has a great scent to it!

PROJECT IDEA

Talk to the experts at your local nursery or hardware store for product advice and tips. Before installation, create a detailed plan of your garden layout, including plant locations and water source access points.
