Originally a twobedroom holiday cottage built in the ’70s, Pandanus was renovated to introduce an internal courtyard and a building that doubled the size of the original. The extension contains two bedrooms, a shared bathroom and an office. The interior and openings of the existing cottage were completely redesigned with joinery and cabinetry designed to complement the extension. The aim was to create a flexible and playful spaces for a growing family on a minimal budget.

The house itself is a beautifully simple corrugated steel building that had undergone extensive internal renovations but maintained a humble exterior, standing somewhat naked within the landscape. The owners had grand visions for multiple additions, including a large covered entertaining deck, swimming pool with a retractable shade roof, outdoor bathroom, front verandah and drying deck.

When renovating a kitchen, the choice of materials for cabinets plays a crucial role in both the design and functionality of the space. One material that’s increasingly popular with homeowners is laminate.
Offering versatility, durability and affordability, laminate kitchen cabinets may transform your space, giving it a sleek, modern edge without breaking the budget.
Why laminate?
Laminate cabinets are composed of several layers of paper or fabric impregnated with resin and bonded to particleboard or
fibreboard. One of the primary reasons people choose laminate is its affordability. Unlike solid timber or other high-end materials, laminate offers a stylish and

Design
From a design perspective, laminate offers near-endless possibilities. Available in a wide range of colours, patterns and textures, laminate can mimic the
look of timber, stone, or other materials. Whether you prefer a minimalist white finish or something bold and vibrant, laminate cabinets may allow you to achieve your desired aesthetic.
Low maintenance
Low maintenance is another reason laminate is a top choice for kitchen cabinets. They resist fading from sunlight, so the colour you choose stays vibrant over time. Additionally, their smooth surface prevents dirt and grime from embedding.
Installing a new pool? Or has it just been a while since you checked the safety of your existing one? With the weather warming up, now is the time to educate yourself and your family.
Service excellence portfolio councillor Christian Dickson says it is part of council’s role to regulate and educate the community about swimming pool safety.
“It’s imperative that pool owners conduct regular checks to ensure their swimming pool fences and gates are safe and compliant,” Cr Dickson says.
“Fencing and gates become faulty with wear and tear, so I encourage every pool owner to follow council’s free pool safety checklist regularly to ensure they are providing a safe environment for their families, tenants and visitors.
“Some people deliberately prop pool gates open for convenience, and sadly this was a factor in more than 25 per cent of early childhood drownings recorded in Queensland over the past 10 years.
“Please take time to educate your family, your kids, the grandparents and even visitors to your home about the importance of shutting the gate and keeping it closed.”
The Queensland pool safety standard regulates the location, height and strength of
barriers, non-climbable zones and gatelatching requirements and prohibits direct access from a building into a pool area.
The standard applies to excavations or structures capable of being filled with water to a depth of 300mm and intended for swimming, wading, bathing and paddling, including spas and inflatable wading pools.
More information about pool safety compliance is available on council’s website or from the Queensland Building and Construction Commission.
Pool owners and home occupiers can be fined more than $23,000 for failing to ensure a pool gate is securely closed.

Queensland’s property market is continuing its impressive run with median sales prices steadily creeping up, according to the latest data released by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).
Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Noosa remain our state’s million-dollar median markets with our capital city and beaches arguably the jewels in the crown of Queensland.
The quarterly median sales results for the June 2024 quarter demonstrate the Sunshine State continues to go from strength to strength in property price performance.
The statewide median house price climbed 4.46 per cent over the quarter and an impressive 12.14 per cent over the year. Not to be outdone, Queensland’s median unit price rose five per cent over the quarter and 14.14 per cent annually.
The market also quickened its pace, with the median number of days on market tightening by about a week compared to the year prior. Queensland’s houses are now selling in about 22 days, while units are being snapped up in just 19 days.
The statewide median house price increased by 4.46 per cent over the quarter,
bringing the median price to $773,000. Annually, the median price rose by an impressive 12.14 per cent.
Most regions across Queensland experienced robust growth in both quarterly and annual median house prices, reflecting the ongoing strength of the state’s property market.
The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast continue to perform well, though Noosa showed a quarterly blip, which could indicate market fluctuations or a cooling in buyer demand in that specific area.
Queensland’s median unit price saw a quarterly increase of five per cent, bringing the median price to $609,000 – hot on the heels of the housing market.
The unit market remains highly competitive, appealing to both investors and homebuyers alike, with significant annual growth rates in most markets across Queensland. Over the past year, the median price for units rose by a robust 14.14 per cent, underscoring the strong demand for this property type.
Again, tourism centres such as the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast sustained steady growth, cementing their status as key markets for unit sales.

An uplifting palette of soft and mid-tone hues, Dulux Emerge has a feel-good energy and is filled with soft greens, mauves and a deep red to bring joy without overwhelming a space.
Dulux has released its highly anticipated colours of 2025.
Rich burgundies and wine hues are tipped to be at the forefront of interior design next year.
Dulux has unveiled its annual Colour Forecast for 2025, which sees uplifting and soothing colours come to the fore within our homes as a response to recent periods of uncertainty.
Distilled into three distinct palettes, Still, Recollect and Emerge demonstrate how colours with warm, brown undertones play an important role in evoking a sense of nurture and positivity.
Those burgundy tones will become more prominent throughout residential interior design, alongside an increased use of green including olive, sage and vibrant yellow-green.
Led by the Dulux colour team, comprising of colour and communications manager Andrea
Lucena-Orr, colour manager Lauren Treloar and colour forecaster stylist Bree Leech, the annual Dulux Colour Forecast is based on year-round research into the latest global and local trends predicted to influence Australian interior design and how we live.
“During times of instability, such as the current cost-of-living crisis and ongoing overseas conflicts, reduced consumer sentiment tends to see colour trends shift less dramatically,” Andrea says.
“However, colour can be a powerful antidote to lift spirits and provide a sense of comfort and warmth, which is evident with this year’s colour palettes.”
“There is a sense to slow down and appreciate life’s everyday moments, to look for joy in our surroundings and find comfort in reminiscing about

times when we felt safe and secure. These shifts have informed the three Colour Forecast palette trends for 2025 in a way that’s relevant for Australian interiors.
“One of the most significant shifts this year
As a response to seeking comfort and security Dulux Recollect is a moodier palette that evokes a sense of nostalgia, reflection and sophistication. Yellowbased greens and deep olive shades, including Zingiber and Olive Blend, are paired alongside rich wine shades ranging from grape to plum, such as Plum Sauce and Grapeshot, which feature as key colours for both walls and accessories. We love this look!
is the increase in warm neutrals across the three palettes. During uncertain times, we often see a move towards muted colours and calming pastels that help make us feel grounded and provide a sense of relief from everyday stresses. As a counterbalance, brighter and joyful colours are emerging as a trend, used to create expressive interiors that bring a smile to your face.
“Pink continues to be present, however it has a brown undertone, making it a perfect neutral base within a colour scheme and we are seeing a greater influence of lilac and purple. Cobalt blue continues to feature as an accent shade, but blue with a purple undertone is a newer direction this year.”

Driven by our need to appreciate things in the slow lane Dulux Still has an instantly calming effect that can create a nourishing and comforting environment. Encouraging a deeper connection with nature, the palette is subdued where warm grey subtly emerges as an accent against yellowbased neutrals and greens, blending with greyed-off and serene cool blues.

Sean Lynch shares his expert advice on plunge pools.
WHAT IS A PLUNGE
When it comes to contemporary architecture, swimming pools have become an indispensable addition to residences. Despite its name indicating that it’s somehow different from a standard swimming pool, plunge pools are fast becoming a popular choice. Here, we will outline everything you need to know about them.
A plunge pool is a compact pool designed specifically for relaxing and bathing. Plunge pools are essentially the same as ordinary backyard swimming pools, but they occupy a significantly smaller area and generally aren’t suitable for swimming laps. The dimensions of a plunge pool are around one-third of the average
swimming pool size, while maintaining a similar depth. Plunge pools have lengths ranging from two to six metres and widths of two to three-and-ahalf metres. The average depth of a plunge pool is around 1.2 metres, although it can occasionally be deeper to offer greater versatility.
The concept of the plunge pool was originally inspired by the natural basins found at the base of waterfalls. However, it has evolved into a highly popular pool option and is gradually becoming a prevailing trend today, owing to its numerous advantages. The compact size makes it a perfect fit for both small and larger houses, allowing homeowners to install it in their backyard without occupying an excessive amount of real estate.
There are numerous benefits to owning a plunge pool, but the following are the most notable advantages you can enjoy:
• Space saving: Swimming
pools have become a popular addition to homes, particularly during the summer when you seek respite from the heat. However, if you reside in an apartment or live in an area where space is a premium, accommodating a full-sized pool may not be feasible. Fortunately, plunge pools have minimal space requirements, allowing you to install this luxurious amenity in a modest-sized backyard.
• Easier maintenance: Another significant benefit of owning a plunge pool is the ease of maintenance. It’s quite straightforward; the smaller size of plunge pools translates to less time and effort required for cleaning and upkeep.
• Cost-effective: There are two ways that plunge pools save you money. Firstly, installing a plunge pool in your home costs less compared to a full-sized pool. Secondly, the ongoing expenses associated with maintaining the pool, such as
water and chemical treatments, are significantly reduced since you require less of these resources for refilling and treatment.
• Enhances home design: Even the smallest of pools can greatly enhance the aesthetics of your yard. The visually appealing feature can also add
value to your home and make it more appealing to potential buyers.
Constructing a plunge pool follows a similar process to that of a standard-sized swimming pool, with the primary distinction

lying in the dimensions. However, when it comes to plunge pools, you have the flexibility to choose between an in-ground or above-ground pool design. The majority of homeowners who decide to have a plunge pool installed choose to go with an in-ground pool design.
within your budget. This step helps prevent financial strain or unnecessary extravagance.
• Space: Plunge pools do not have a fixed size, allowing you to customise your pool design to be larger or smaller than the average plunge pool. However, it’s a good idea to consider the available space to avoid any regrets regarding the size of the pool. Your pool builder will work with you to ensure that your backyard space can accommodate the size of pool that you desire.
Another important decision to make is the material from which your pool will be constructed.
Concrete pools are more popular due to their luxurious aesthetic.
On the other hand, fibreglass pools are also popular due to their less time-consuming installation process.
While construction work is entrusted with professional pool builders, you still need to make
important decisions to help ensure that the end result is one to your liking.
The following is a list of factors to consider that can simplify the decision-making process:
• Cost: Before making the decision to build a plunge pool, it’s important to consider the cost of your preferred pool design and ensure that it fits
• Contractor: While it may be tempting to cut costs when undertaking pool build, opting to hire a less reputable swimming pool contractor in the hopes of securing a bargain could have disastrous consequences. It is crucial to select an experienced pool builder who can handle the project with expertise. Properly built plunge pools that utilise quality materials can last for many decades.

There’s only one way you want a green pool – when it’s about energy ef fi ciency and not the colour. The environment is an important consideration in our lives today, so as a pool owner, it is also important to
understand how you can be more sustainable, reduce energy consumption and save money. Here are three tips from the expert team at Clark Rubber for achieving an environmentally friendly pool, while saving money on energy bills.
Your pool pump is the heart of your pool system and is critical for keeping your pool water crystal clear and clean. However, it’s also one of the most energy-hungry appliances in your home and so it is an important appliance to focus on to fi nd reductions in energy use. Here are some tips on how to optimise your swimming pool pump for energy ef fi ciency:
Keep your pump fi lter clean:
When the leaf basket gets clogged and dirty with debris, your pump’s ef fi ciency can decline. Always check to make sure your leaf basket is clear of debris.
Install a timer switch on the pump: A timer switch will help you control when your pump turns on and off and how long it runs for, so you can control the run time and avoid the pump running for longer than is necessary or during peak periods of consumption when power costs are highest.
Use a properly sized pump: Make sure to choose a pump that has the right power for your pool’s fi ltration needs. The higher the power of the pump, the more energy it uses. Ultimately you want a pump with the lowest power consumption that will adequately circulate the whole volume of your pool at least once, in your standard fi ltration times.
Use an energy-ef fi cient pool pump: If your pump running costs are too high, or it is ageing and due for replacement, consider investing in an energy-ef fi cient pump such as a variable speed or a multi-speed pump. Variable speed and multi-speed pumps allow you to adjust the pump’s speed to meet your pool’s needs. Slowing the motor speed reduces the flow rate and this will signi fi cantly reduce energy consumption and lower your energy bills. Variable speed pumps are the latest pumping technology and use up to 90 per cent less energy than traditional single-speed pumps.

It is a great luxury to have a swimming pool, and a luxury to have it heated; however heating a large body of water does require lots of heat energy.
Solar pool heating: If you can reduce your reliance on non-renewable sources of energy for heating, you can help reduce your carbon footprint and make a positive impact on the environment. The most ef fi cient and cost-effective way to heat your pool is using solar pool heating. It is an eco-friendly option as it uses the sun’s free and renewable energy to heat your pool water.
As long as the sun is shining, solar pool heating can not only extend your swimming season, but it can also save you money and reduce your carbon footprint. These systems consist of a roof-mounted thermal collector that captures the sun’s energy. Pool water is circulated through the rooftop collector, where the sun’s
thermal energy is transferred into the water and then sent back to the pool to steadily heat it up. The solar heating system uses a controller and sensors that detect when the solar energy is ample and then activates a pump to send water up to the roof.
Ef fi cient electric heat pump pool heaters: If your aim is to extend your swimming season and enjoy your pool all year round, then you will need to heat the pool in the cooler months and even through winter. Heating a pool requires a lot of energy, so fi nding an ef fi cient heating system is imperative to minimise energy consumption and to lower your costs. Pool heat pumps use refrigerant technology in reverse to extract the latent heat energy from the surrounding air and to transfer it into the water with minimal power consumption. Unlike solar heating systems, heat pumps can be used any time of year and are ideal for
maintaining the desired set temperature in your pool. Reduce the set temperature on your pool heater: If you already have a pool heater, a really simple way to minimise your power consumption and power bills is to just reduce the set temperature. The higher the temperature you set, the longer and harder the unit has to work
to reach the setting. If you reduce the set point from say 30°C to 26°C the reduction is significant, but your family will hardly notice the difference.
3. INVEST IN A POOL COVER:
Using a pool cover is a great way to be more environmentally friendly and helps you to keep your pool cleaner too. In the heat of
summer, you may have noticed that your water levels will drop significantly in a short space of time. This is due to evaporation. When your water evaporates, you have to top up your pool with fresh water, which isn’t very water-wise. Not only that, every time you top up your pool with fresh water, you also must top up the chemicals to balance the water. Without a pool
cover, this can be a constant and costly headache for you. By reducing evaporation, a pool cover will reduce your need to keep refilling the pool and will save significant amount of precious water and money.
In fact, a solar cover is also designed to let warmth in, and during summer, can actually heat your pool by up to 8°C. They are also insulators so will minimise heat losses and reduce the energy required to keep your pool warm.
Another typical phenomenon in swimming pools is heat loss. After your pool water has been heated by a solar heating system, a heat pump or a gas heater, the last thing you want is for all that heat to be lost to the surrounding air. It’s a bit like leaving the front door of your house open whilst your home heating system is on. Having a pool cover means you won’t have to run your pool heater as long which will also help you to reduce your power consumption and power bills.
