MOVING YOUR BATHROOM

Relocating your bathroom by swapping it with another room, like the laundry, can be a game changer for your home's layout and functionality.

Ever felt that your bathroom’s current location just doesn't work for your home’s layout? If so, you might be surprised to learn that relocating your bathroom can be a practical solution. One idea that often goes overlooked is swapping the bathroom with another room.

The laundry, with its existing plumbing fixtures, is a great option, potentially improving your home’s functionality without the need for extensive construction.

One of the primary benefits of swapping your bathroom with another room, such as the laundry, is that it typically requires less structural work than other types of renovations.

This means you can avoid the complexities and costs associated with tearing down walls or expanding your home’s footprint.

Additionally, relocating plumbing and electrical systems within existing walls is usually more straightforward and cost-effective.

ASSESSING YOUR CURRENT LAYOUT

The first step in considering a bathroom relocation is to evaluate your home’s existing layout. Identify the areas that are underutilised or poorly arranged. Often, the laundry and bathroom are situated in less-thanideal spots, which can disrupt the flow of your home. By switching these spaces, you might find that your home's floorplan improves.

tip!

When planning the swap, think about how each space is used and how often. Your decision should come down to functionality. Bathrooms are generally used more frequently than the laundry, so placing the bathroom in a more accessible location can enhance daily convenience. For instance, relocating a bathroom to a central area of the home can be especially beneficial for families or guests, making it easier for everyone to access.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

As with any renovation, design plays a crucial role. Consider how the new bathroom location will integrate with the rest of your home’s aesthetic. You might need to adjust the decor and layout to ensure it blends seamlessly. Utilise the opportunity to upgrade fixtures and fittings, opting for modern, energy-efficient options that can enhance both the functionality and look of the new bathroom.

STYLE & PRIVACY

CONSULTING THE EXPERTS

Engaging with architects or interior designers can provide valuable insights and help you visualise the new layout – they may even have ideas you had not considered. These professionals can also ensure that the structural integrity and plumbing requirements are adequately addressed. Since bathrooms and laundries both require plumbing, this swap can be relatively straightforward. Ensure that the new locations for sinks, toilets and showers align with existing plumbing lines to minimise costs and complications.

THE YOUR HOME GOVERNMENT WEBSITE RECOMMENDS:

• Choosing toilets, showers and taps with the highest WELS star rating.

• Consider a two- or three-way bathroom design to eliminate the need for additional bathrooms.

• Choose an energy- and waterefficient washing machine with a high star rating.

ELECTRICAL WORK

DID YOU KNOW?

Adequate ventilation is essential for both bathrooms and laundries to prevent moisture build-up and mould. Ensure that the relocated bathroom has good ventilation through windows or exhaust fans.

Updating the electrical system is crucial. Ensure that there are enough outlets and proper lighting in the new bathroom space. This is also a good chance to install energy-efficient lighting and heating solutions. According to the Federal Government’s Your Home website, lowefficiency incandescent or halogen lights with LED lights use 80 per cent less energy.

SPACE AND COMFORT

The relocation process offers a unique opportunity to rethink the layout and functionality of both spaces. The old laundry, transformed into a bathroom, can be designed with modern conveniences and luxurious touches. Meanwhile, the new laundry can be optimised for efficiency with improved storage solutions and updated appliances.

SPACE-SAVING COMFORTS

When you’re planning a renovation, making the most of your floorspace is essential. One way to maximise your living area is to install a wall bed, also known as a Murphy bed. These practical and stylish additions can transform any room, from your home office to a spare bedroom that doubles as a playroom. We talk to the expert team from Wall Beds Sunshine Coast to find out why these innovative beds might be the perfect fit for your home.

Wall beds are a clever solution for saving space. Unlike traditional beds or sofa beds that can dominate a room, wall beds fold

neatly into the wall when not in use. This means you can reclaim valuable floor space during the day, perfect for smaller homes or apartments where every

centimetre counts. Imagine turning your guest room into a spacious home office or a playroom that’s free from clutter.

One of the standout features

of wall beds is their versatility. They can seamlessly fit into various settings – be it an office that needs to double as a guest room or a spare bedroom that

Our experienced cabinet makers specialise in designing, constructing, and renovating both kitchens and bathrooms. From adding additional storage space to installing splashbacks and benchtops, we only work with industry-leading suppliers like Caesarstone, Polytec, Quantum Quartz and more.

serves multiple purposes. During the day, the bed is tucked away, providing ample space for work or play. It’s easy to pull the bed down and have a comfortable sleeping area when it’s needed.

This dual-purpose functionality is ideal for making the most of your home’s layout.

Installing a wall bed is easier than you might think. First, measure your space to choose the right size. Then, decide on any additional features like bookcases or extra storage. Today’s wall beds are also designed to blend beautifully with your home decor. They can be hidden behind stylish cabinetry or even incorporated into a desk setup with materials available in a range of colours, from oak and walnut to black grain or white sheen. They are also available in sizes from king to single.

THE BENEFITS:

Wall beds can be a great solution if you have unwanted bulky furniture. By folding the bed away, you can keep your room tidy and free from unnecessary clutter. This is useful in multifunctional spaces where you need flexibility. With a wall bed, your room can transform in minutes, making it easy to switch between different uses.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SPLASHBACK

One of the best ways to make a statement in the kitchen is with a stylish splashback. Here are six of our favourite looks to get you on the right track for your home renovation project.

BRICK

We all know that exposed brick walls look great in the right design, so why not take the concept into the kitchen? We love the combination of this painted brick wall with the timber-toned accessories and greenery.

MARBLE

This timeless and classic material will bring a richness and sophistication to any kitchen. It is also durable and easy-to-clean.

WINDOW

TIP

Glass splashbacks need to be toughened. This ensures the material can withstand the heat and it also prevents the glass from shattering into sharp shards should it break. Instead, it will crumble.

Open-planned kitchen and living spaces are hugely popular in Australian residential design. Windows and natural light will also give a sense of space, plus there is the added advantage of the outlook.

TILES

The classic look has grown to incorporate a wide range of colours, styles and shapes. Our favourite? The herringbone tile.

A hugely popular splashback material, glass can be coloured, frosted or clear. Keep in mind that it does show up marks and fingerprints easier than other types of materials. Frosted

PATIO PERFECTION

Creating a well-designed patio for your pool area can transform your outdoor space into a relaxing oasis. When planning, it’s essential to consider the style and functionality that best suit your needs and complement your home’s architecture. Consulting with your builder about local council guidelines and requirements is crucial to ensure your project adheres to regulations.

When designing a patio, composite decking and natural timber are excellent choices for combining aesthetics and durability. Other flooring/base options include natural stone,

such as flagstone and slate, which offer a timeless look, or concrete pavers.

GABLE

A gable patio is perfect for those

who want a classic, elegant look. With its pitched roof design, it provides good ventilation and allows natural light to flood the space. This type of patio is ideal for larger areas and suits various outdoor activities.

SKILLION

For a sleek, modern look, consider a skillion or flat roof patio. These patios are versatile and can be easily integrated into contemporary home designs. They offer a clean, minimalist appearance and are perfect for smaller spaces where a lowprofile structure is desired.

FLYOVER

If you prefer an elevated patio that offers more height and an airy feel, a flyover or build-over patio is an excellent choice. These patios extend over existing structures, providing ample shade and a spacious environment for relaxing.

FREESTANDING

A freestanding patio is a flexible option and can be designed and constructed as a pool pavilion. It offers the freedom to create a separate, distinct space for outdoor dining or poolside lounging.

PLANTS

Consult local nursery experts to select pool-friendly plants. Opt for slow-growing species with non-invasive roots to avoid disrupting hardscape elements. Popular choices include palms, cordyline, bird of paradise, and agave. Container plants are also a practical option.

When planning your pool project, remember that landscaping costs can often rival or exceed the pool’s cost. Essential elements include drainage, fencing, concreting, paving, planting, furnishings and decking. Establish your budget and aim for a balanced pool environment that harmonises hardscaping (like concrete features) and landscaping (such as plants). Here are some key points to consider.

LIGHTING

Pool lighting enhances both aesthetics and safety. LED lights are popular for in-pool use due to their colour variety. For external lighting, consult an electrician, as additional earthing may be required, especially if installing lights in a fence. (For more on lighting, turn to page 22.)

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

Consider a variety of outdoor furniture options, paying attention to materials, warranties and durability. Given the intense Queensland sun, choose items resistant to fading and harsh conditions. Additionally, prioritise pieces that blend comfort and style to create an inviting and visually appealing outdoor space. We like the aluminium Sunny sun lounge pictured above. It’s available from Daydream Leisure Furniture, Warana.

WATER FEATURES

Incorporating water features like stylish waterfalls or fun bubbling jets can add a serene touch to your pool area. Plan these elements early and include them in your overall budget to ensure a cohesive and well-integrated pool design.

LIGHTING UP YOUR POOL

Lighting plays a pivotal role in enhancing the ambience and safety of your pool area. With the right lighting, you can create a magical atmosphere that extends the usability of your pool well into the night. The expert team from Discount Lighting and Fans share these tips on how to use lighting to transform your backyard oasis.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TYPE

Waterproof and approved LED lights are a popular choice for pool lighting due to their energy efficiency, longevity and vibrant colour options. They can be installed in various parts of the pool, around the perimeter and in landscaping features. LED lights offer flexibility, allowing you to change colours and create dynamic light shows to suit different moods and occasions. In comparison, while less energy-efficient than LEDs, halogen lights offer a warm, inviting glow that can create a cosy atmosphere. They are often used in traditional pool settings and can be installed underwater or around the pool deck.

Underwater: Underwater lighting is essential for both safety and aesthetics. Strategically placing pool-approved lights along the pool walls and floor can illuminate the water, making it safer to swim at night. These lights also highlight the pool’s shape and features.

Perimeter: Installing lights around the pool’s external perimeter can enhance the area’s safety by clearly defining the pool’s edges. This type of lighting also creates a

welcoming ambience for evening gatherings. Consider using low-voltage LED strip lights or solar-powered lights for an eco-friendly option along the top of the surrounding tiles.

Feature: Highlighting speci fi c pool features, such as waterfalls, fountains and sculptures, with focused lighting can create focal points and add a touch of elegance. Spotlights are a great option.

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING

Incorporating lighting into the surrounding landscape can further enhance the pool area. Use pathway lights to guide guests to and from the pool and uplighting to accentuate trees, shrubs and architectural elements. This not only adds depth to the space but also integrates the pool area with the rest of the backyard.

tip!

For convenience and control with your pool lighting, consider integrating smart lighting systems into your pool area. These systems allow you to control the lights remotely using a smartphone app or voice commands. You can adjust the brightness, change colours and even set schedules for different lighting scenes.

DECK AND PATIO LIGHTING

Don’t forget to illuminate the deck and patio areas around your pool. It promotes safety while adding to the ambience. Consider using recessed deck lights, string lights, or lanterns to create a warm and inviting space. We like the mini recessed in-ground/ step light with copper face available from Discount Lighting and Fans, pictured here.

CREATING YOUR CENTREPIECE

A swimming pool should be more than just a functional feature; it can be the centrepiece of your backyard, transforming it into a stunning water feature. Sean Lynch, founder of Pool Fab Landscape and Pool Creations, offers his top 10 tips for creating a beautifully designed pool.

1. Strategic placement: Position your pool in a way that doesn’t cut off a large section of your yard. This helps maintain an open, spacious feel.

2. Maximise small spaces: If space is limited, consider building the pool’s sides against your property boundary to integrate it with your fencing or yard’s edge.

3. Entrance considerations: Plan for one or two gates when designing the pool entrances. This ensures accessibility without overcrowding the area with multiple entry points.

4. Visibility matters: Place the pool where it can be easily seen from the main living areas of your home. This enhances safety by allowing you to monitor children and lets you enjoy the pool’s visual appeal and the soothing presence of water.

5. Purposeful design: Think about how you intend to use your pool. Whether it’s for lap swimming, leisure, or a fun zone for kids, your design should cater to these needs.

6. Family-friendly features: Design with future generations in mind. Features that cater to children will attract

• Simple assembly

• No maintenance

• Easy to trim to shape

• Coated for UV protection

• Suitable for indoor/outdoor use both home & commercial

families, whether it’s your own or potential buyers.

7. Space-savvy ideas: While a diving pool might seem exciting, it may not be practical. Assess your space and opt for a pool style that complements your backyard dimensions.

8. Social spaces: Pay special

attention to areas where people can sit or lounge in the water. Enhance these spots with well-designed steps and benches to create inviting social spaces.

9. Integrated elements: If you’re including a spa or steps, incorporate them into the pool design. This can mean

building them partially in and out of the pool to maintain a cohesive look.

10. Convenient access: Align the pool fence gate with the steps and your house door. This streamlined access makes it easier to move between the pool and the house.
