One of my favourite things to do is f ick through interiors magazines. And I know I am not alone – on any given Saturday the newsagent is f lled with readers lining up for their copies of the latest magazines, eager to sit down with a coffee to see what others have done with their homes. Even if you are not renovating, it doesn’t hurt to dream. So how are you getting inspired for your next renovation project? If you are stuck for ideas, our cover story this month will hopefully help get your juices f owing. This month in My Renovation we also have a special Haymans feature. It’s a Sunshine Coast lighting institution, and you can read all about it on page 18. We have a couple of pages of style and the latest in design trends, wallpaper and lighting ideas. And this month we are introducing a new book review section over on page 8. Happy reading and renovating. Jemma Pearson

NEED SOME INSPIRATION TO GET YOUR DIY PROJECT STARTED? MY RENOVATION IS HERE TO HELP.
FLICK
Publications including, of course, the one you are holding, are usually the f rst place renovators go to for ideas. But you have to be organised. Always have the scissors handy to cut out and keep pages and photos of other renovations that inspire you, and keep it all tidy in a folder sectioned off into rooms. From there you can ref ne your choices, chopping and changing as you come across new ideas. This helps to build a complete picture of what your new bathroom, lounge and outdoor space will look like. You can also use this when consulting with professionals such as your architect, cabinet-maker and interior designer, who can give you practical advice and ideas of how much that tap, wallpaper and kitchen bench will cost you.
CLICK
If you haven’t jumped online to check out all those design and renovation blogs, you are missing out. Whether you just want to look at pretty pictures or you are after some expert building advice, it is all out there, you just have to know where to look. Perhaps one of Australia’s best known design blogs is thedesignf les.net – it covers architecture and interior design plus craft and art. Websites and blogs by celebrity stylists like www.taradennis.com/blog and www.shaynnablaze.com provide good fodder. Also check out www. designhunter.net, shannonfricke. com/blog or just have a Google and see what you come up with.

can. While magazines and blogs are an easy way to while away an afternoon of renovation dreaming, other people’s homes and display houses offer plenty to inspire. In a home you can see how f oorplans and f ttings work in real life. So head to that open home down the road for the property for sale and get over to any of the display villages in our region (you’ll also be introduced to local building companies, what they do and the cost they can do it for). Prize homes are also good – and hey if you take a ticket and win, you may not be renovating but moving instead!
PHONE
Got a smartphone? Then you have a plethora of ideas in your hand, with heaps of apps to help with your DIY project. Like the
Caesarstone iPhone app where you can match Caesarstone products to your kitchen or bathroom. Dulux and Haymes have apps that allow you to match colours with their paint products, while bathroom suppliers also have apps that let you upload a photo of your vanity and then mix and match their mixer taps to see what suits. Head to your app store or the website of the supplier to f nd out more.
SHOP
It’s never too early to head to the f ooring, bathroom or furniture retailer for ideas. Many retailers on the Coast have their products on display in showrooms so you can get an idea of what that tile looks like on the wall or how the curtain will hang on the window. Even if you are not ready to buy it’s a good idea to

see what is out there and what local suppliers can do – because of course you want to buy local. It’s also never too early to get an idea of price.
EXPOSED
The Housing Industry Association holds a building and renovation expo in Brisbane every year, though we have missed 2013’s (it was in May). If you are happy to travel, in any given month there is a renovation, building, outdoor or design expo on somewhere in the country. From expos and shows you can get plenty of ideas, though it’s a good idea to take a notebook and camera to note things down, because the minute you get home you’ll forget who you saw – and sometimes the brochure or business card doesn’t help remind you.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE All this choice can be overwhelming, so how do you make a decision that you can live with? The whole point of renovating is to improve your life, so f rst and foremost your renovation should fulf l a need. So, sit down and decide what you need and why. You might have fallen in love with that huge bathtub you saw in that magazine and those amazing stone benches from that kitchen showroom, but if you will never use it or it doesn’t suit your lifestyle, what’s the point? Any change you make in the home should be driven by practical needs f rst.

BOOK REVIEWS
T
hey say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but when the dust jacket looks this good, why not? Celebrating all that is good about sustainable design, the author, an expert in the f eld, says that social pressures and environmental considerations are calling for a rethink in the way we design our dwellings. Inspired Home is f lled with examples of sustainably designed buildings that address the call for a new outlook and innovative thinking. The author travels the world and brings us back homes for people in all stages of life, who live in urban environments and rural settings. Sustainable homes aren’t merely those that are energy eff cient or built from recycled materials. They are beautiful, practical and truly inspiring.
INSPIRED H OMES HOMES By Ari Friedman $59.99, Images Publishing

t used to be that no home owner would consider including this darkest of hues in the residential space, but black is now embraced by more designers and home renovators than ever before. Used incorrectly, black is dreary, depressing and darkens even the lightest space, but wise use of the colour can create a tranquil home that is both timelessly beautiful and ultra-contemporary. Still not convinced? Stephen Crafti has set out to change perceptions and has f lled the pages of his book with many examples of building, designs and furnishings with black – whether it’s encasing an oceanside retreat, painted on a library f oor, or applied liberally to kitchen cabinetry. Black is beautiful, so, are you brave enough to try it at home?

Waterwise gardens
Forget vast expanses of lawn and thirsty hibiscus, water-wise renovators are planting hardy natives and grasses for low-maintenance gardens.
Recycled brick Exposed concrete and steel The industrial stylings of steel and concrete are looking just as comfortable in residential dwellings. Steel window frames are wonderfully solid and exposed concrete, whether on the f oor or ceiling, matches wonderfully with timber furniture or benchtops.
Repurposed brick – whether as a raw feature wall in the living zone or refashioned into garden beds or paving – is a too-often-overlooked a building product. And with any recycled material it is much cheaper and greener than many of the alternatives.

WALLPAPER
Hang about I
f you’ve ever stripped off tired, old wallpaper as part of a renovation project or room revamp it’s understandable if you never want to use the stuff again, but the resurgence in the popularity of wallpaper isn’t some passing fad. Wallpaper is back, and modern products not only look fantastic, but are much easier to work with than the stuff your grandmother had on her walls. Many wallpapers are easy to remove, so in a few years when you feel like a change, you can easily peel away the old paper to prepare for the new. More
good news about paper is that it can hide a multitude of sins, so if you have uneven or cracked walls, wallpaper is often a better choice than paint. If you are nervous about using paper for the f rst time, start off small. If you have a dining space that you don’t use very often, brighten it up with wallpaper. If you have a favourite arm chair or an unusual sculpture in the corner of the lounge room, make a feature of it by popping up a panel of wallpaper behind it. This will create a striking focal point in the room.
Creating a feature wall with a coat of paint is a bit last decade, but if you aren’t yet ready to paper your entire family room, a feature wall is an effective way of introducing colour and interest, especially if your furniture and furnishings are fairly neutral. And if you choose an inexpensive paper, it can be just as affordable as buying a couple of cushions and a throw. Still not sure? Paper the smallest room in the home. Large patterns can work really well on a small scale. Just be sure to avoid delicate papers in wet rooms.
Wallpaper is back! We have an extensive range of international designer wallpaper collections ranging from the elegant to the ecclectic. Wallpapering just one wall can transform an entire room.
We have an extensive showroom with the largest sample library on the Sunshine Coast. • Shutters • Blinds • Wallpaper • Rugs & Artwork • Motorised products • Curtains, Fabrics, & Upholstery

We are the RENOVATORS DREAM... ONE STOP SHOP
Get papering: 1. Clean the wall and smooth over any bumps or cracks. 2. Prime the wall – your retailer will help you f nd the best product. 3. In the middle of the wall (not the edge) pop up your f rst piece with the help of plumb line, level or laser level. Remember, walls and ceilings can be uneven, so don’t rely on them. 4. Apply the paste to the wall. 5. Pop up the wallpaper, leaving yourself about 10 centimetres at the top and bottom. 6. Apply the next strip, aligning the pattern, but don’t overlap. 7. Once you are happy with the position of the strips, you can trim at the top and bottom with a sharp knife.

Lean on me H
ere is the lowdown on kitchen surfaces. Which one will you choose for your project? Laminate – The least expensive option, the popularity of this easy-to-maintain material means you get a lot of choice in terms of colours and designs. New laminate products look fantastic, though the joins have always been laminate’s downfall. Still, manufacturers are working around this with edges that are more seamless. It’s durable but laminate can stain if you don’t look after it. Timber – Stains and scratches can harm timber benchtops, even those that have been f nished in a tough
coating, so is timber practical? Well the softness of timber is actually in its favour – drop a saucepan on timber and the pan might dent the surface but at least it won’t crack it. And after a few years most timbers can be sanded back and ref nished. Stone – This type of benchtop will get you noticed, but beware, natural stone is porous and can easily chip and crack if mistreated. As a natural material no two pieces are alike, so the benchtop you get will never match exactly the one you saw in the showroom. Engineered stone – What this has over natural stone is that it is smoother and has a more uniform

appearance, and is more heat and stain resistant. Engineered stone also a more affordable option. However, it can lack natural stone’s character and beauty. Stainless steel – The chef’s choice, stainless steel is easy to clean and is heat and stain resistant, though it does scratch easily and f ngerprints will show. A great choice if you are going for that grown-up, professional look. Concrete – Concrete can be a surprisingly attractive surface, though like stone it will need sealing and can stain. Hues added to the concrete means you don’t have to settle for industrial grey.

It’s all light I
LIGHTING TRENDS According to Vicki Noone from Haymans, modern lights are all about LED, “which is moving and changing almost weekly. Lots of new products are coming through. Everything that is available in old-school lighting is becoming available in LED.” Consumers are quickly seeing the advantages of LED lights, which are more energy eff cient and have longer lifespans, give off no heat or UV and come in an array of designs.
f you are a renovator or tradesperson on the Sunshine Coast, chances are you have been in Haymans Electrical and Data Supply’s Maroochydore store. It’s been a Coast institution for more than 35 years, and is a household name in relation to lighting supplies. Many home renovators might think that Haymans sells only to trades, but the Maroochydore showroom is open to the public. Vicki Noone is the lighting showroom manager. She says the staff know their lights. “There are 12 of us and a lot are long term, only a couple are new,” she tells My Renovation. “A lot of the staff have been here a long time, which says

something. A lot of them have been here over 10 years.” Overseeing the tight-knit team is Haymans Maroochydore manager Erwin Schlomm. He has worked in the Maroochydore business for eight years but has been with the company for about 11 years. “He is people friendly, he aims to solve problems and not create them and he does try and back the staff.”

Staying power W hile many staff at Haymans Maroochydore have been with the business for more than 10 years, lighting showroom manager Vicki Noone trumps them all – she has worked there for 25 years. It is her job, along with Tess Graham (who has nine years’ lighting experience) and Abby O’Mara (who is the lighting rep) to look after the public’s lighting needs. It’s rare for any worker to stay with a business for 25 years, so what’s so special about Haymans? “Well they let you use own initiative, we do our own buying,” Noone tells My Renovation, adding
that the company encourages staff to keep “up to date with what’s going on in lighting”. “If we have new ideas they back us in them.” She says one of the initiatives is that Haymans Maroochydore has put in a dark room to show customers how the lights will look once the sun goes down. All lights are on individual switches so customers can see exactly how the lights will work in the real world. So what is Noone’s advice for renovators? “Renovators need to come in and see the dark room and the

In the dark
Can you imagine a life without artif cial light? For years candles were the primary source of light for the average household before oil lamps and gas lamps – the main sources of lighting in the 19th and early 20th century – came along. While electric lighting had been around for years before the First World War, it wasn’t until well into the 20th century that electrical lighting appeared in the average home. How far we have come in less than 100 years.

BATHROOMS
Coming clean Renovating to sell? Here are a few affordable ways to update your bathroom that will appeal to a wide range of buyers. • Go for neutral colours. Not all buyers have the same taste as you, so play it safe with a simple colour palette and understated f xtures and f ttings. • Go for a water-eff cient toilet, taps and showerhead. And don’t forget to have your agent make a point of these features when talking to potential buyers. • It doesn’t matter how beautiful your paintwork and how
sparkling your tiles are if the room is poorly ventilated. Remember, once your house goes on the market, you’ll need to keep it clean, and a well-ventilated bathroom will be much easier to keep sparkling. Buyers will also appreciate this when they move into the home. • Get the light right. Use the most of natural lighting and be sure to provide adequate task lighting. Think about investing
in a skylight for rooms with no windows. • In many bathroom renovations, the f ooring is often left as is – many renovators balk at having to remove and replace f oor tiles. But it is worth looking into getting a new f oor along with new cabinetry and wall tiles. Take a look at f ooring that can be easily installed on top of your existing f oor – a much cheaper option than ripping out old tiles.

Save money on your energy bills
Trend alert: • Mirrors are the emerging trend bathroom designers are seeing as we head into the last half of 2013. And why shouldn’t they be? Oversized vanity mirrors, mirrored cupboards and surfaces are not only essential for applying make-up or shaving, they also bounce light around the bathroom and make small spaces appear larger. • Extra-large cupboards are also a big design winner – sleekly designed cupboards make use of wasted space and provide all-important storage. You can never have too much of that in any room of the home. • Wall-mounted toilets are a stylish, space-saving option for small bathrooms, but still look great in larger rooms.
Danny Jaggs is from Combined Electrical Solutions Looking to cut back on your home’s electricity costs? A simple change to your pool pump and hot water tariff could be the answer. Many Sunshine Coast households have a pool in their backyard, and for most people that pool is one of the biggest users of electricity in the home. The majority of pools are on tariff 11, which is your everyday usage tariff. However, if you’re looking to reduce energy usage in your home, you can switch your pool to off-peak tariff 33 (with a possible saving of up to $400 per year) and also gain a $250 reward from Energex. Tariff 33 is available for a guaranteed minimum of 18 hours per day, which is plenty of time to run your pool pump.
SAVE!
However, rather than the standard everyday usage of around 26 cents per kilowatt hour, tariff 33 will cost you only 17 or 18 cents per kWh, meaning you can save an average of nine cents per kWh without impacting on your pool usage. Energex is looking to reduce peak demand, and so if you switch your pool pump over to tariff 33 you will also receive a $250 reward, as well as dramatically reduce your electricity bill. We can visit your home for a free no-obligation quote.

LIGHTING
Bright news Night lights When lighting your outdoor area, the usual lighting products most home renovators go for are bollards or wall-mounted lights. But with a new array or outdoor lighting products available, it’s time to think outside the square. Lights concealed in garden beds that brighten trees and buildings provide practical illumination but also look fantastic. Water-proof LED strip lighting, which is now making its way into kitchens and indoor living zones, is also a good option for the outdoors.

On the move O Don’t forget to take a look at the ceiling fan section at your retailer when you go to choose your lights. Ceiling fans can cool a room by as much as seven or eight degrees. Choose the appropriate size for your room – a 122-centimetre product for small or medium-sized rooms, a 142-centimetre fan for bigger spaces. Metal blades are generally noisier than timber but do move the air around better. If you decide to opt for metal blades ask the supplier about products that are resistant to rust.

WATER WISE
Make a splash Incorporate some water-saving ways in your renovation. Here are some tips on how:
Choose a water-saving showerhead for your bathroom and ensuite. Look out for products with a high WELS (Water Eff ciency Labelling and Standards) star rating. A standard showerhead uses around 20 litres of water per minute, while a three star-rated showerhead will spit out only about six or seven litres a minute – a huge difference.
While you’re shopping for your bathroom hardware, pick up a WELS-rated toilet, which will use about a third of the water of a less-eff cient model.
Get yourself a water tank for rainwater collection.
Washing machines and dishwashers are big water wasters, but they don’t have to be. When shopping for your whitegoods, opt for the most water-eff cient products the budget allows.

In the garden, plant natives and other hardy varieties that don’t require much water. Grey-water systems divert the water from your laundry and bathroom basin through a f ltration system so it can be reused on the garden. Consider installing one of these systems during your next reno.
Look out for WELS-rated taps. The old-style tap releases 15 or so litres per minute, while low-f ow ones use only about two litres per minute.
