Welcome Researching this month’s cover story, I was fascinated and a little unnerved to learn just how toxic renovating and refurbishing can be. The smell of a freshly painted wall, a freshly laid carpet, a brand-new couch and timber deck is all due to the chemicals that these products release. And they are bad news for our health. Lucky it is not too diff cult to reduce and eliminate toxins in your new reno project. Head over the page to f nd out how. Also this month we have space-saving tips for smaller homes, ideas on kitchen design and bathroom plans, and a summer garden guide. All this and more is now in your hot little hand. Until next month! Chemical-free O zone A chemical cocktail brews every time you take on a new reno project. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

ur homes are f lled with chemicals, and no we are not talking about the cleaning products under your sink. For allergy sufferers and health-conscious home owners, renovating is a great time to consider creating a low-chemical environment. Nasty chemicals come in particleboard and carpet, paint and beds, resins and insulation. Many of these stock-standard building materials and furniture emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and there is plenty of evidence to show that even well after the renovation is done, these VOCs leach out into the atmosphere, affecting indoor air quality and causing illness such as asthma, respiratory problems and skin complaints. If you are keen to have a healthier renovation, and a healthier home once the trades have left the building, it isn’t that diff cult. Here’s how:

Have you always dreamt of having stone benchtops?

Design A healthy, chemical-free reno starts on the design table. Designing your new home to take advantage of cross-ventilation and natural breezes will help improve the indoor air quality. Giving your home a daily air-out is a great way to shift toxins and clear the air, plus you’ll f nd you are relying less on air-conditioning and fans.

though you will have to spend more money. Carpets made with wool or natural f bres, on top of a natural rubber or jute backing are much healthier. Also be aware of chemicals when investing in f oorboards and resins to treat them – hardwood f oors topped with natural waxes are much healthier than heavily treated timbers topped with synthetic veneers.

Carpet and flooring

Insulation

Carpets are big VOC emitters – from the synthetic materials used to manufacture the carpets, to their rubber backings, to the glue that holds them to your f oor. Carpets are also often treated with f re retardants and stain-proof ng chemicals that release into the atmosphere for years. The good news is it is easy to go low allergy,

If your insulation installer has to wear protective clothing and a heavy mask to get it into the ceiling and walls, do you really want that material in your home? Insulation that is made of f bres that deteriorate or break up over time can cause all sorts of respiratory problems. Go for a product made from natural

wool or recycled materials that don’t break up over time.

Paint That new paint smell means your freshly decorated walls and ceiling are giving off VOCs, and even after the smells wear away, the chemicals linger. Luckily there are now plenty of low-VOC and no-VOC paint products on the market. Remember though that some of these healthier paints aren’t as long-wearing, so it is a matter of weighing up your desire for a chemical-free home with the need for a hard-wearing wall covering.

Plants Don’t forget about the humble house plants – they have fallen out of favour recently but house plants are great at removing small levels of

toxicity and f ltering the air. Try areca palms and money plants to cleanse and f lter the air.

Furniture and soft furnishings Find out what kind of treatments your furniture and soft furnishings have received. If your couches, chairs and soft furnishings claim to be antibacterial, f ame retardant, UV resistant or stain resistant, chances are they have been treated with chemicals that will break down over time and make their way into the indoor air. Furniture that has been manufactured with particleboard, laminates and MDF also contain lots of resins and glues, which can cause allergies and irritate skin. Head over to page 24 for tips on dealing with lead-based paint.

Imagine.... never painting again! Choose either Australian Powdercoated Aluminium or COLORBOND® Steel. All screens and gates are custom designed to suit your needs.

SPACE-SAVING TIPS

Small & beautiful H ave a small home? As well as adding extra rooms as part of your reno, try these space-saving tips too:

• Got a hidden space under your home? Ask your builder about popping in some storage nooks under timber f oors.

• Add mirrors – they can instantly make a space look larger and bounce light around the room.

• Spend a bit of extra cash on custom-built joinery that uses every centimetre of wall space.

• Need new furniture? Buy pieces that do double duty by incorporating storage – sofas with a pull-out bed, bedheads with shelving, bench seats where you can store your beach towels, and coffee and side tables with shelves or drawers.

• Paint your ceilings in a lighter shade than your walls to trick the eye into making the room appear bigger than it is.

• Nothing highlights a space like clutter, so install plenty of f oating shelves, hooks and hanging baskets to keep your bits and pieces tidy and off the f oor. • Choose your lighting carefully. Sleek lamps offer soft light that is much more complementary to small spaces. But avoid too many chunky wall sconces and f oor lamps.

• Avoid heavy furniture that sits f ush with the f oor, and instead opt for sleek sofas and furniture with legs.

KITCHEN

On the boil T

ime spent in the kitchen should be a pleasure and not a chore. To make cooking a breeze in your new kitchen, make a note of these tips before embarking on your renovation. If you are spending lots of time in front of the stove, be sure to keep everything you will need close by. Incorporate lots of hooks to hang saucepans within easy reach and install a magnetic strip for knives right by the stove. Don’t want to miss out on the action? There is no rule that says your stove has to sit on the back wall. Design your kitchen

so the stove is in the bench that faces out towards the living zone. That way you can interact with the family, catch up on the news on the TV or chat to guests while stirring the risotto. Don’t forget about a drawer or shelf to contain all those condiments – salt, spices and oils – that you need for every meal. No matter how tempted you are to put it elsewhere, always place the dishwasher next to the sink. Finally, make space for a tea and coffee station, where you can keep your good cups, plungers, kettle, tea bags and sugar all in the one spot.

Don’t want to miss out on the action? There is no rule that says your stove has to sit on the back wall.

FLOORING

Thrown together P lanning to include large expanses of tiles and hardwood f ooring in your new renovation? Break up the monotony with a rug or two. But what to do with them? Rugs don’t just provide a bit of warmth and comfort on an otherwise hard surface. Rugs can create a visual point for a grouping of furniture, such as lounge room chairs. Under the dining table a rug will settle the table into the room, grounding it visually and protecting the f oor from scraping chairs. Rugs also create a focal point or splash of colour in a neutral room. A gorgeous handmade Persian rug

will last a lifetime and never dates, though if the expense is a turn-off there are more affordable patterned rugs on the market that will do just as good a job. In a large, open-plan space, rugs can help break up the room and def ne it into zones – an area for reading and relaxing, a dining space, and TV area. Visually splitting up the zones allows you to make intimate spaces of large rooms. Remember, once you have your rug in place, take care of it. Give it a gentle vacuum, keep it out of direct sunlight and rotate it to prevent wearing on one spot.

LIGHTING

Three illuminating looks Commercial

The commercial and industrial look is a style that is f rmly entrenched in the home now, and lighting designers are busily creating utilitarian f xtures and f ttings that draw heavily on the New York warehouse style. Sturdy f ttings in brushed or polished metal provide timeless simplicity. Desk and f oor lamps in a matt-black f nish work well in the lounge and dining room, or offer a splash of industrial cool in the bedroom.

St Clair Sheetmetal STAINLESS STEEL and SHEETMETAL SPECIALIST

Glamour

In a complete change of direction, ultra-contemporary light shades and f ttings made from an array of materials – porcelain, paper, glass, acrylic – provide a sculptural focal point in any space. Richly textured fabrics, strong geometric shapes, oversized shades and the new wave of modern chandeliers are all popular lighting additions.

Vintage

While op shops and garage sales used to be the places to go for vintage f ttings, many renovators have now cottoned on to the popularity of these lights. But don’t despair – manufacturers are creating vintage-inspired desk lamps, sconces and pendants for the sentimental home owner. Think art deco-style glass sconces, acrylic shades in ’60s-inspired hues and a delicate art nouveau-esque desk lamp.

BATHROOM

Design trends Here are My Renovation’s handy tips on getting your bathroom reno just right.

If space is at a premium it pays to spend extra time in the planning stages – measure the room, create a f oor plan and consider the angles. Even in a tight space you should ensure you have enough clearance for shower doors and cupboards. Sliding doors are a good option when the room is a bit squeezy.

Spend time collecting paint and tile samples and pictures that inspire you. See what colours work well and let the entire picture evolve over a few months. That way when it comes time to choose your materials you will have a f rm idea of what you want and what works.

Think underf oor heating is a luxury? You might be surprised to f nd that you have room in the budget for it and it costs very little to run once it is installed. But you have to decide now - remember, once your f oor is down, it’s too late to install underf oor heating.

Main bathrooms take a lot of punishment, so be sure to include lots of durable f nishes and plenty of storage. On the other hand, guest bathrooms and ensuites often don’t have to work as hard as main bathrooms, so you can put the focus more on style and luxury.

Cutting edge furniture

You don’t always have to go for the expensive f xtures. Remember, affordable taps and toilets work just as well as the more expensive products, and if you save money on your f ttings, that is money you can spend elsewhere.

When ordering your tiles, always ask for more than you need. Chips and breakages are a fact of life and it takes the stress out of the job when you have plenty of tiles in reserve.

PAINT

Proceed with caution I f your home was built before 1970, chances are the paint on your walls contains lead. Even newer homes may contain lead paint, and disturbing those surfaces can expose you to this toxic substance. Paint that contained as much as 50 per cent lead was used in many homes built in the 1950s and earlier. The lead content in paint reduced signif cantly after the 1960s, but lead-based paints were available for decades afterwards. Like asbestos, lead is harmless if it is left undisturbed, but if you are planning to sand, scrape, cut into or demolish walls in your home that have

lead-based paint on them, you should proceed with caution. Lead is a health hazard and if you inhale or ingest it, it can sit in your body and cause damage to teeth, bones and organs. Small children are most at risk. If they are exposed to lead (say by breathing it in during the renovation process or popping their hands in their mouths after playing outside where the soil is contaminated) they might be faced with developmental and health problems later in life. For this reason it is really important to keep children and pregnant women well away from your renovation. However, adults too can experience

problems such as anaemia, headaches, memory issues, osteoporosis and hypertension from exposure to lead. A lead test kit from your paint supplier or hardware store will help you determine how much lead is in your paint. But if it is an older home, it’s probably best to assume that your paintwork does contain lead and act accordingly. While there are plenty of precautions you can take as a DIY renovator, if you have to remove or disturb these walls as part of you reno, it’s best to get professional advice f rst.

WINDOWS

Made in the shade E

uropeans love their awnings – you can’t walk into a restaurant in many parts of the continent without passing under a stripy shade. Considering the role of this handy building product, it’s a wonder they are not more popular in Australia. Awnings block out much of the sun that reaches the façade of the home, particularly the windows, greatly reducing the amount of heat that is transferred inside. Given our warm climate on the Coast, it’s a relatively inexpensive and sustainable way to keep cool. There’s also an argument that awnings could help add value to your property, as they greatly

help with energy reduction and add to a home’s sustainability credentials. If you’re not a fan because you don’t want your home looking like a French patisserie, it’s time for a rethink – awnings come in an array of styles and designs, colours and materials. Fabric awnings not only protect your home from the elements, but they are a great way to maintain privacy. But you can also get clear PVC awnings to enclose verandahs and patios – handy on rainy days. Wall-mounted folding-arm or drop-arm awnings are perhaps what most of us think of when we hear the word ‘awning’. They are mounted on

the wall and move by a hand-operated crank, though you can get motorised versions. Drop-arm awnings are a great option in our harsh weather by providing plenty of protection while still allowing lots of air to f ow. Straight-drop awnings are a good alternative to exterior blinds, and are a handy choice for decks, while channel-guide awnings work well in windy locations. They are a robust choice that allows you to move the awning up and down easily. These are just a few options available, so it’s worth checking out your nearest blinds and awnings retailer to f nd out more.

ur beachside climate throws up various challenges for gardeners – long dry summers kill lawns and make life diff cult for delicate f owers and shrubs. Water conservation is an issue in all parts of Australia, too, so creating a vibrant, easy-care lawn on the Sunshine Coast is generally high on most home owner’s lists. The best bet is to stick to home-grown species and hardy succulents from other parts of the world. These can provide ground cover, shade and colour. Try pairing kangaroo paw with

But the true test is the cooking, not words. We know that if you’ve tasted food from the genuine Weber Q you will already know the truth. It’s very easy for a salesman to exaggerate with words but taste can’t exaggerate. It’s the sensation you experience. For a lawn substitute, many f ne-leafed ground covers look like lawn at a distance. While some ground covers can take the occasional gardener skipping across them, it’s not a good idea to regularly step on these plants. If you need to walk through your ground cover to other parts of the garden, a few well-placed stepping stones are all you need.

Filling your yard with herbs is also a good idea – herbs are relatively easy to grow and many will tolerate our climate and soils. Most herbs like fertile, well-drained beds that get plenty of sun – though in our harsh summers a partly shaded spot is probably the way to go. The scrambled egg’s best friend, chives can tolerate the sun but prefer moist, fertile soil. On the Coast a shady spot is best. On the other hand, sage loves a dry, sandy soil and full sun. Rosemary and lavender are

tougher and can be shaped into aromatic hedges. For lovers of Italian food, basil is a must, but in our region it is best to place it in a shady spot and keep the plant well watered. Parsley tends to do better in the sun, though it gets thirsty as well. The staple of any Asian cook’s pantry, lemongrass likes the sun, but keep it well drained and well watered. Kaff r lime trees like the full sun, while coriander is harder to grow – it likes a moist spot and too much sun will kill it off. Bon appetit.

Lay it down W

hether you’re updating an existing pool or installing a brand-new one, when the hard work is done you’ll need a spot where you can lie back – preferably on a banana lounge – and admire the result. Installing new decking around your pool will revitalise your outdoor area, and provide you with plenty of space to relax and entertain. There are a few reasons why decking is a great choice for outdoors – the warmth and feel of timber easily blends in with the natural surrounds, it is highly weather-resistant, and the f at, smooth surface is easy on your feet and allows for practical entertaining. If your pool is close to the house you can link your

existing outdoor entertaining space with the pool area using one seamless deck, separated by a subtle glass pool fence. Otherwise opt for a raised timber platform around your pool, which is then enclosed by your fence of choice. Decking prices will depend on the size, whether you need plumbing, drainage or electrical work, and the material you choose. Measure the area you have in mind and then speak to a timber specialist about which timber will suit your needs – be sure to ask for a variety that is grown and treated using sustainable practices. Your timber specialist will also make sure you have the right bearers and joists (which will

affect the springiness of your deck) and are using correctly treated aluminium or stainless steel bolts and joints. Remember if your deck is around the pool it will need to withstand chlorine and other pool chemicals, which can build up and make the timber slippery; and even if it is covered by a roof or shadesail it will need to be coated in an outdoor f nish. As timber is a natural material, it lends itself to more natural landscaping and décor. Incorporate plenty of tropical greenery into your landscaping, and if your pool design allows for it, a natural waterfall-style feature can be quite striking. Opt for some classic sun lounges and accessorise with colourful cushions.
