COVER STORY
Top tips • When painting from a can, take the time to punch some holes into the rim. This helps the excess paint to drain back into the can while you work. • Remove old paint stains by softening with linseed oil and then wiping away. • Finish one project before you start another, whether it’s repainting a chair or renovating the kitchen. That way you don’t end up with half a dozen half-f nished jobs.

• Ask for help – in shops, from your tradespeople, even handy neighbours. Apart from making mistakes, that’s the only way a DIYer can really learn. • Buy sensible shoes – you’ll be glad you did. Those old thongs are not appropriate for sanding, painting or sawing. • Use baby oil to remove paint, glues and stains from your skin after a day on the tools. • Hardware stores often offer workshops on everything from buying the right drill to creating a deck. These are a great source of ideas and know-how.

Climbing in safety At any time in the DIY renovation process you will need to head outside and climb a ladder. It sounds like easy stuff but home owners have caused themselves serious injury and even died from ladder falls. Here is our step-by-step guide to ladder safety.
• When in doubt employ a professional, but hang around and ask questions so you can learn. Though it’s also a good idea to know when to get out of their way and just let them get on with the job. • Measure twice, cut once. End of story.
1. If it is raining or particularly windy, postpone your ladder climb until the weather clears.
• If you have trades at home, get them to buy the materials for you – they get a trade discount. Otherwise at the hardware store, ask for a trade discount yourself. They might just give you one, especially if you are buying in bulk.
2. Check the ladder’s maximum weight. If you exceed that weight, get a bigger ladder. And never use a broken ladder. Check for loose rungs or greasy spots too.
• To prevent screws from coming loose, a drop of clear nail polish in the hole before tightening the screw will help secure it in place.
3. Put on a good, comfortable pair of rubber-soled shoes.
• Before varnishing wood, check for small dents. You can remove these by wetting the area, covering with brown paper and then ironing with a hot iron. The steam will expand the squashed wood back into place.
4. Look out for power lines and avoid them. Place the ladder on a solid, level patch of dirt or grass. Don’t place it on concrete or over doors and windows.
5. Angle the ladder so that for every four metres of height there is one metre from the base of the ladder to the wall. 6. Face the ladder and grip it with both hands. Carefully step onto the f rst rung and keep three points of contact (from your two hands and two feet) on the ladder at all times. Ascend one rung at a time – no skipping rungs if you are in a hurry. 7. Keep your feet in the centre of the rung and avoid leaning. If you can’t reach something, head back down to earth and move the ladder into place.
Imagine.... never painting again!

NEW PRODUCT
Write on, wipe off M
y Renovation thinks Resene’s new Write-on Wall paint will be a big hit. The product turns any wall into a whiteboard. Just apply Write-on Wall over your existing wall paint. Once it is dry you can use whiteboard markers to write on the wall without damaging the surface. And when you feel like a change simply rub out the marker with a soft cloth or whiteboard eraser, and pop up your new thoughts. Write-on Wall has a clear f nish, allowing the colour of your walls to show through. We think busy families are going to love the product for kitchen walls, teenagers will have a lot of fun making notes in their bedrooms, and what a great idea for home off ces – remind yourself about important appointments by scribbling it on your wall. Head to resene.com.au to f nd the nearest stockist.

KITCHENS
Making room D
on’t have the space for a sprawling, open-plan kitchen? Here are some tips to make a small kitchen work.
Go glossy
Glossy surfaces will ref ect light and make the room appear larger than it is. Consider gloss panels incorporated into your cabinetry or a high-gloss or mirrored splashback. Even a polished timber f oor will make your kitchen seem more spacious. Also speak to a professional about the best way to light your kitchen.
Get creative with storage A small kitchen needs as much built-in storage as possible. As well as your standard drawers and cabinetry, look
at the available wall space – the spot above the sink, for example. Can you add hooks for pots and pans, or a recessed shelf for storing spices? Another solution is to build tall vertical cabinetry.
Add character
Small kitchens can look a bit drab, so while it’s best to keep your overall colour scheme simple, add bursts of colour with feature tiling or colourful appliances. Varying your materials is another easy way to add visual interest – choose two different f nishes for your lower and upper cabinetry, or splurge on a unique benchtop.
Do double duty
A small kitchen doesn’t have the bench
ave s & w o n e Renovat AUCTION DOORS
space for the usual 15 appliances, so you’ll need to pick ones that are multi-functional. Consider a multipurpose steam microwave oven and a built-in coffee machine, or treat yourself to that Thermomix you’ve been dreaming of.

BATHROOM
Re-grouting made easy If you’re looking for simple and affordable ways to brighten up your bathroom, take a close look at the grout. Over the years bumps and knocks to your tiled surfaces will have loosened the grout, allowing water and cleaning products to seep in and cause discolouration. Re-grouting is an effective way to give older tiles a new f nish, and is easier (and cheaper) than replacing your tiles.
You can then vacuum out the loose grout and dust, and wash the surface with water mixed with white vinegar.
Step 1.
Step 3.
Use a cutting blade to remove the existing grout. You’ll need a tough, toothed cutting blade with an angled handle, which lets you apply strong pressure to break away the existing grout.
Re-grouting is an effective way to give older tiles a new f nish, and is easier than replacing your tiles
Step 2.
Your new grout should be the consistency of toothpaste. Using a squeegee or rubber f oat, wipe it diagonally across the tiles into the gaps. Leave it to set for around 30 minutes then wipe off the excess using a clean sponge and water. The grout will need to be left to cure for 48 hours before you apply a sealer using a small paintbrush. Try to avoid getting sealer on your tiles (keep a clean rag handy to wipe it off as you go).

LIGHTING
Plugged in Your electrician used to just install lights and powerpoints, but these days this trade can do so much more. If you’re renovating, make sure you consider what added features your electrician can bring to the project. Home automation: A home automation system allows you to control a huge range of devices from one central point, such as your lighting (allowing you to activate or dim lights with a single touch), temperature or outdoor irrigation. Home theatre: A home theatre includes things like a video projector, f atscreen TV, gaming consoles and surround sound system. Don’t forget to incorporate a media centre for your music collection and photos. Ask your electrician to simplify things with a central system controlled by a universal remote.
Security: A home security system can include a simple alarm system, keyless entry activated by a remote, a video intercom or security cameras you can view remotely. Incorporate these features into a larger home automation system and you can turn lights on and off at designated times to deter intruders, and open and close motorised blinds or curtains to maximise privacy. Air-conditioning Air-conditioning uses a lot of power, but a professionally zoned and installed system can
increase eff ciency. With an automated system you can turn on the air-con 10 minutes before you get home and automatically close your curtains and blinds at the same time.

You can never spend too much time preparing walls and trims. Sanding, priming and f lling in gaps is boring, but proper preparation makes the job of painting so much more pleasurable and gives a much better result.
2
Always get more paint than you need. The hassle of overbuying is never as painful as running out of paint halfway through the f nal coat.

Top tips for painting like a professional

Don’t overload your paintbrush. It is tempting but it usually results in drips and streaks.
Coming home from work and painting till midnight? We have all been there, but it’s always preferable to paint in good light. Take the time to f nd the right colour and product. Take advantage of colour swatches and test pots, and don’t buy until you have found just the right shade.
Mix, mix and mix some more. Once you have cleared the room, primed your wall and set out your brushes, it’s tempting to get stuck in, but take the time to stir your paint according to the instructions on the can. Got more than one tin? Invest in a large bucket and tip each can into that, stir it well and then ref ll the tins – that way your colour is even.

The hot weather we have on the Coast in summer can be a bane for DIY painters. Paint dries much faster in summer, which can cause uneven walls. Never paint onto a hot wall or on a wall that is in direct sunlight. Chat to your supplier about a paint thinner to slow down drying.
Paint like a pro and always paint the trims f rst, before the ceiling, then f nish off with the walls. Painting the trim f rst means you don’t have to be so concerned about being neat, you just have to focus on getting that smooth f nish – if a bit of paint ends up on the walls it doesn’t matter, as you’ll cover it up when you paint your walls. And leave a good 24 hours drying time before taping the trim so you don’t pull off your paint with the tape.
Waste not
What are you planning to do with that leftover paint from your latest project? If you are feeling creative, there are ways you can waste not. • Got a blank wall that needs a little something? Grab a large canvas from the art shop and release your inner artist. Stripes or a criss-cross design using masking tape, or a Jackson Pollack-inspired splash are easy and effective. • For pale tints, keep them handy and use it to prime walls in your next painting project. • Got some old timber chairs you plan to off oad at your garage sale? Use the leftover paint to give them new life f rst. • Add a feature wall to one of the smaller rooms of the house. Not enough paint for that? Use it to brighten up a door.

FLOORING

our kitchen and bathroom need to be the most functional rooms in the house. This means balancing style with practicality, especially when it comes to f oor surfaces. Exposure to moisture, heavy foot traff c and spills mean your f oor needs to be hard working and durable; it also needs to be as slip resistant as possible. Luckily there are a range of practical options that won’t detract from your home’s style – or your budget.
TIMBER
Timber is also a popular choice for Sunshine Coast home owners, as it is timeless and durable, and suits our natural surrounds. Again, it can be extended into indoor and outdoor living areas and bedrooms; timber can also work in bathrooms, but can’t withstand the same amount of water exposure as tiles. If you have your heart set on timber in the washroom ensure it is professionally installed and sealed, and that the room has adequate ventilation to prevent a build-up of moisture.

VINYL & LAMINATE
If you’re renovating on a budget, don’t turn your nose up at the thought of vinyl f ooring – today’s varieties are much more stylish than the kitchen f oors of old. They come in a range of timber- and stone-look f nishes, and are highly water and stain resistant. The same goes for laminate, which is thicker again than vinyl.

TILES
Tiles are one of the most popular choices for wet areas, as they are available in a range of colours, f nishes and sizes and can accommodate most budgets. Porcelain and ceramic options are particularly water resistant, and the beauty of tiles is that you can extend a similar f oor surface throughout your home. In the bathroom try a mosaic strip or pattern, which will add visual interest and give you extra surface grip around the shower or bath. If your budget allows consider natural stone tiles, which are hard-wearing and provide a stunning earthy f nish. Stone is quite porous and can be prone to stains, so make sure yours is regularly sealed and any spills are quickly soaked up.

home’s thermal performance is really important, and you can save a lot of cash on heating and cooling bills by getting the right design and orientation for your block and choosing the appropriate insulation to maximise the thermal mass of your home. But if you are concerned about creating an energy-eff cient home, you also must spend time researching the windows that are going in as part of your new renovation. Poorly placed or designed windows can make your home too hot in summer and too cold in winter, but well-chosen glazing can help maintain comfort year-round. Glass is the home’s largest path of heat loss (and gain), but you can buy
space-saving functionality wardrobes to ultra modern style shower screens
energy-eff cient windows, doors and skylights. Computer programs are also now available that will calculate the impact of glazing on the thermal performance of your home. Look out for the WERS (window energy rating scheme) label on window products. In our climate, the cooling stars are perhaps most important, but you still want the windows to perform well in winter. The WERS rating considers the glazing and the frame. Skylights are a great option – especially for a renovation – as they can be f tted to existing homes. A well-placed and appropriately sized skylight can allow heaps of light without unwanted heat gain.

ant to reduce the carbon footprint of your latest landscaping project? If you are planning to use a lot of timber you can without feeling guilty about the environmental consequence. Go for materials that have been certif ed by the Australian Forest Certif cation Scheme or Forest Stewardship Council. Also ask where the timber has come from (closer to home is best) and what it is (opt for sustainable, durable Australian timbers). Recycled decking is also a great choice if you don’t mind that rustic, well-worn look, but be sure
to f nd out where it has come from and what it has been treated with. The other option is to re-use materials from your own renovation – saving money and time. Composite decking products are also becoming more popular – they look like timber but are generally manufacturer from a mix of wood particles and plastic. We guarantee the neighbours will never know they aren’t solid timber. When choosing pavers go for recycled options such as sandstone. Always source your materials from close to home to reduce the transport costs – and the
environmental impact. Finally choose hardy, drought- resistant plants – you don’t have to compromise on looks by choosing plants that will thrive in our sometimes dry climate.

HIA SUNSHINE COAST ROUNDUP 2014 EVENTS
POSITIVE SIGNS FOR HOME BUILDING IN 2014 All the signs are pointing to a solid year of growth for home building across most parts of Queensland according to the Housing Industry Association. Stuart Collins, HIA’s Sunshine Coast Branch Manager said “With the exception of the cities linked to the resources sector which had their peak in activity a year ago, there are very strong signals of significant growth in the levels of home building across the State.” He further said “Building approvals are up, especially in the multi-unit market, and new home sales are also on the move.” “Once these approvals hit the ground in the early months of 2014, they will be making a strong contribution to economic growth in Queensland.” The news is particularly promising for the Sunshine Coast whose market has been heavily depressed for years, but is now expected to grow strongly throughout 2014. As Mr Collins points out “Home building approvals are up by 125% on the Sunshine Coast with detached house approvals up 57% and multi-unit approvals up by a massive 428% compared with a year ago . Even coming from a low base this is an exceptional result with major benefits to the industry and local economy during what is expected to be a sustainable recovery.
BIG YEAR FOR REFORM IN QLD 2014 will be the year that the State Government will deliver on a wide range of reforms including the detail of the new Queensland Building and Construction Commission, a new Planning Act, a substantially revised approach to infrastructure charges and the introduction of a state-wide housing code that will hopefully eliminate the need for planning approvals on most new homes. HIA as the peak national body for residential construction, development and renovation is heavily involved in all of these areas and will be advocating for a better operating environment for industry members that also results in more affordable and innovative building outcomes for the community. HIA will keep you up to date with all these developments through future issues of the Round-up.
