A NEW DIRECTION One of the Coast’s oldest businesses is moving with the times as Dwyers Family Living makes a change in direction. Known as an electrical retailer for almost 80 years, the Caloundra business is moving with the times. Owner Monica Dwyer-Cook tells My Renovation, “The business was originally started by Les Skipper in, I think, 1938. His daughter Pat Orrell and husband still live in Caloundra. In 1966 [my father] Des Dwyer purchased the business from him. We started as Caloundra Appliance Store” and a few name changes later, it is now called Dwyers Family Living. The new name reflects a change in direction away from electrical and into outdoor furniture, barbecues and homewares. “After nearly 48 years in electrical I have decided with a lot of heartache and a lot of thought to get out of electrical,” says Dwyer-Cook, who has been with the business for 25 years.

She says electrical is now a challenging business to be in, with the big names dominating and very few independants left. “So I have decided to take a different direction. We became a Weber specialist last year.” As well as becoming a specialist in Weber, Dwyers Family Living will also sell a few other barbecue brands, plus all barbecue accessories, as well as outdoor furniture, umbrellas and homewares. Dwyer-Cook says, “We are in a transition period at the moment. There is still a bit of electrical to go, washing machines, dryers and small appliances – they are being sold at cost plus five per cent. She is quick to point out that despite the change many customers have been loyal. “I would like to thank all the loyal customers over the past 50 years.” And she reminds those customers that they will still find the same staff in the same location with the same great customer service in the revitalised store.

Technology. You can’t get away from it, and if you are renovating, it pays to have a serious talk to an expert about how to set up your home to deal with it. Now that the beach weather is behind us, we are all going to be spending more time indoors, so this month in My Renovation, we are dedicating our cover story to the latest in sight and sound. Don’t buy a new sound system or television without f rst reading our story, over the page. Also this month we have tips on buying and hanging art, from page 26, plus stylish home off ce products (page 8), the do’s and don’ts of a country kitchen Jemma (page 12) and so Pearson much more.

T

he media room, something none of us had even heard of a generation ago, is a modern-day must-have. But it’s not just in this room that a good TV and sound system is desirable. Today’s renovators are preparing their entire homes to be wired up for the future, as houses become more integrated and smarter. So, let’s start planning for your eyes and ears before you begin renovating.

Sight…

When we f rst settled down in front of that bulky black and white box we could never have imagined where TVs would end up today. And TV makers are constantly updating, ref ning and redef ning their products. Want the latest TV? Plasma lovers insist that this type of TV is

the only way to go but they do add signif cantly to your electricity bill. Want a TV for the future? Investigate the latest LED and ultra-HDs. Pay TV is all well and good, but the newest TVs are smart ones. Access social media, play games, watch shows on demand as well as catch movies and TV programs on your smart TV. Sadly the video rental shop is a thing of the past, as consumers embrace media hubs and digital video recorders where you can access TV channels and websites, plus rent movies. If you are a Mac user you’ll want to look into Apple TV, but be sure you have decent high-speed internet to access movies and TV shows through iTunes plus channels not available on regular television.

3DTV hasn’t been the huge hit we were all thinking (and the manufacturers were hoping) it would be when it was f rst introduced, but if you love your big action movies and sport, 3D is well worth looking into.

…and sound

The way we listen to music has also changed dramatically in just one generation – remember listening to the top 40 on your AM radio with your f ngers hovering over the record button on your cassette deck? Vinyl and tapes have been superseded by computer f les, and if you love your music, you’ll want to investigate the latest ways to listen to it as part of your renovation. Tech lovers are no longer prepared to pay for CDs and even iTunes now that it’s so easy

to access music online via subscription services. New to the world of streamed music? Head to Spotify and have a go at the free trial. Once you have access to music sorted you want to hear it. Surround sound can be achieved with small portable speakers that can be wirelessly linked to your music library. Weatherproof speakers also mean you can entertain on your new deck with your favourite tunes playing softly from the outdoor dining table or mounted on the poolside pavilion.

Other tech must haves: • Smart glass – with the f ick of a switch your windows go from transparent to opaque. Very clever and handy. • Appliances now come with their

own apps. How about the clothes dryer that lets you track the process of the cycle, and turn it on and off, from your phone? • Kohler’s Numi toilet has a motion-activated seat and lid, bidet wand and air dryer, deodorising f lter, and more, but the best bit is the built-in speakers that play your favourite tunes. • Throw away your cloths, the newest robotic window cleaners clean, squeegee and dry your windows. Perfect for high places. • The Netatmo Urban Weather Station monitors indoor air quality for things like humidity, carbon dioxide and temperature then alerts users via their iPads or iPhones so they can take action, such as ventilating a room. Smart and healthy!

KITCHEN

A little bit country T he country or farmhouse kitchen has fallen out of favour with many of today’s renovators, and, well, there are times when you can’t really blame them. Country kitchens have a reputation for being kitschy, cluttered or just plain daggy. Country kitchens are traditionally f lled with decorative architectural elements such as intricate mouldings, beam ceilings, framed and raised-panel cabinets and furniture-style cabinets. Matched with ornate and decorative lighting and

ornamental knobs and handles, there is a lot to consider with this type of design. The traditional materials and colours used in a country kitchen – such as heavy dark timber cabinetry and benchtops – have been shunned by the contemporary renovator, who is after clean lines and the latest materials such as engineered stone and stainless steel to go with their high-tech appliances and unfussy lighting choices. Stainless steel and 2-pac have replaced tiles and timber.

But on the Sunshine Coast there are many homes, in the hinterland and close to the beach, where a country kitchen will work a treat. Get it right, and a country kitchen can become a warm, inviting and personal space that is the well-deserved centre of the home. So what makes a kitchen a country one? This is a warm space, so include natural materials like timber f ooring, with retro appliances such as a gas cooker (Smeg does a great one) and old-fashioned yet functional

elements, such as a big square apron-front sink. Adding those personal touches such as a vintage clock, hanging pots and a vase of wildf owers adds country charm without being tacky. A word of warning though – cluttering kitchens with too many useless accessories makes it look messy and lacking in uniformity. Bring your country kitchen into 2014 by including ultra-contemporary touches such as soft-close drawers, stainless steel benchtops and industrial light f ttings.

Flatpacks made easy! We design and customise your f atpack kitchen Our point of difference from large hardware stores is that we perfectly design and manufacture your kitchen to your needs. You no longer have to compromise with a one size f ts all product. Let Cut N Edge prove that we can make your kitchen, save you money and give you a kitchen you will be proud to show off for years to come. • Quality craftsmanship made with the material you want • A price difference you just won’t beat when compared to a custom f tted kitchen • Our team of specialists will even come and install it! Why this works

Why this doesn’t

A country kitchen needs timber, but this space works because the timber is paired with other materials, such as contemporary stainless steel and subtle paint colours. Accessories are on show, but they don’t clutter the space.

Too much timber – it overwhelms the space, dragging it down. Too much foliage - every kitchen needs greenery, but this is a kitchen, not a nursery. Old fashioned colours – brown and pale yellow: just say no.

Happy days A

recent study by paint manufacturer Taubmans has revealed that the nation’s home owners are stuck in a decorating rut. Eighty per cent of the 1000 home owners surveyed say they would like to change the appearance of their homes, while 57 per cent don’t use certain rooms as much as they would like to. And 67 per cent say the look of their homes is getting them down. Incredibly, half of the respondents say they have spent two years or more thinking about making a change without doing anything about it. Lack of time

and cost are the big factors leading to this inaction. Does this sound like you? Well-known designer and Taubmans brand ambassador Shaynna Blaze is encouraging Australians to get out of the rut and make changes to their homes. “Refreshing decor is a positive mood lifter and gives people more pride in their homes,” Blaze says. “Redecorating can seem like a time-intensive and tedious task but with just a lick of colourful paint you can quickly and easily give your home a much-needed facelift,

without breaking the bank.” If you need some inspiration, Taubmans and other paint brands have tips, tricks and plenty of ideas on their websites. Get online and

take a look, then head down to your local paint shop. You might be surprised how affordable and easy it is to transform a room – and your mood – with a splash of colour.

NEW HOME, SAME GREAT SERVICE Sunshine Coast retailer Supa Cheap Carpets is on the move. But locals needn’t worry – the team isn’t going far. Currently located at 1/8 Technology Drive, Warana, the David Kington business is moving around the corner, to unit 2, 4 Waterview Street, Warana. Owner Dave Kington says, “It is a bigger premises. We have been a warehouse/showroom for many years and it is now time to go to a dedicated showroom with separate warehouse.” But he tells My Renovation that the business is still offering “the same warehouse prices, and nothing changes in terms of service and price”. Supa Cheap Carpets has been in Warana for 17 years, and Dave has flooring in the blood – he comes from

a family who has been in the carpet e business since 1973. The team has a huge amount of knowledge, and Dave says they can finish the jobs as well as the big names. In fact, “We are an independent brand and our prices are better than the big names.” The range includes carpet, vinyl, vinyl plank, and timber flooring, as well as blindss that are custom made and manufactured in Buderim. “Ninety per cent of the carpets we sell are Australian made on the Gold Coast and we also do carpets for pontoonss and boats, and security screens.” He adds, “Vinyl plank is a big mover. It is one of the first commercially based floorss that is affordable for the home.” For home owners who are too busy to pop over to Warana, Supa Cheap is also m mobile and will come to see you, from 7am to 7pm, five days a week. “We travel from Gympie to Glass House.”

BATHROOM

Storage options One of the home’s smallest rooms has to f t a lot into it, so it’s important to have storage covered in your bathroom renovation. 1. It wasn’t that long ago that every bathroom built featured a medicine cabinet. Handy for adults, safe from children, with the added bonus of a mirror. But if they’re just not your thing, take a look at other all-mounted storage options such as small cabinets and simple shelves at shoulder height.

2. Get repurposing with steel f ling cabinets salvaged from the secondhand shop, galvanized steel drawers that are made for the garage, bedside tables and sideboards. Furniture designed for other

rooms of the home can all become storage in the bathroom. Think outside the square when considering storage options for your space by looking in departments of the furniture shop other than the bathroom section.

3. Find space. A shelf above the door is perfect for extra toiletries, toilet rolls and guest towels. And while you are at the door, look behind and f nd a lot of extra storage space. A simple shoe organiser hanging from the back of the door provides plenty of storage. Don’t have

FLOORING

Well-laid plans I f it’s been a while since you lived with carpeted f oors, the renovation process is a great time to revisit the idea. Carpet manufacturers are ref ning their processes, making carpets greener, more long wearing, more comfortable and better looking than they have ever been. So what’s new in carpet?

Happy hues

We have all seen the dodgy colourfully patterned carpet, whether in the old family home, at work or school, and this may have turned you off being bold

with colour, but the future is bright for carpets. Retailers and stylists report that more and more home owners are opting for coloured and patterned carpets, and why wouldn’t they with the range that is available? Beautiful rich plums and aubergine are popular, along with earthy brown and slate. Stripes are also making their way from commercial f oors into the home. Coloured carpets are perfect for family rooms and bedrooms.

Sensational synthetics Synthetic carpets have always been popular for their affordability and

durability, but synthetics have lacked the feel of natural f bres such as wool. Advances in synthetics now mean that many home owners can’t tell the difference between a quality synthetic carpet and a wool one. And synthetics come with some great features, too, such as antibacterial, anti-odour and stain-resistant qualities.

Environment first

If environmental concerns are keeping you from carpet, it might be a good time to do some research. Carpet manufacturers are more aware than ever of the need to be

green. Carpets that contain a corn-derived polymer have been on the market for years. This polymer generates fewer greenhouse gases than nylon. Natural f bres used in undyed carpets are also available.

systems, their recycling practices and Green Star ratings to f nd the most sustainable. You can create a healthy, green home and still have carpet.

Right for the job

There are a dizzying array of carpet materials (wool, synthetic, blends, eco, jute and sisal) as well as loops and piles (woven, tufted, cut and loop, knotted and more). Not all carpets are the same, which makes sense, as not all carpets need to offer the same performance. When choosing your carpet, one of the f rst questions the retailer

WINDOWS & DOORS

French connection

Replacing windows with French doors is a very popular renovation project, and it is a fairly simple one that most DIY renovators can tackle easily. The f rst rule of demolition is of course to make sure you are not dealing with any asbestos – get a professional to check the one for you.

• Start by removing the window frame and architraves around the space you are replacing, then remove the window. • Carefully cut and remove the cladding from below the window space, then take out the internal frame from the bottom of the old window to the f oor. Be careful not to remove the internal framing from above or to the sides of the opening. • Time to make your door frame, and then

install it in the space. Obviously you will have measured all this to ensure it is the right size for your chosen doors. Don’t forget to make sure the frame doesn’t twist as you pack and f x it into place, and install f ashing under the sill so that when it rains, the water doesn’t make its way inside. • Fix the hinges (one towards the top, another at the bottom and one in the centre of each door) to the doors and then

Remember to use an exterior paint on the outside of the door so they are well protected from the elements. • Now it’s time to work on the landscaping and backyard – you want to make sure your French doors open onto a well-maintained garden, inviting back deck or comfortable courtyard!

Shopping for ovens Form meets function when shopping for ovens. Follow these steps for a cooker you will love for years to come. • Work out your budget. Do you want to splash out for high-end, are you happy with a mid-range or just want cheap and cheerful? When you know how much you have to spend it is then time to think about the aesthetics. • When renovating a kitchen you will have to work out the design and look of the entire room before shopping for appliances. Once you know what type of look you’re trying to achieve you’ll have an idea

of whether you are after stainless steel, retro or ultra-contemporary. • Think about what you will use the oven for. If you are a prolif c baker, you might be after a large oven with multiple racks. If you want convenience, a wall oven means you won’t be bending up and down while you cook.

• Now you have narrowed down your options, head off to your retailer. Get touchy feely with the

• Many ovens come with an array of cooking options, but very few cooks really need them all.

Most cooks use fan-forced and do a bit of grilling. If you are tossing up between an oven with lots of functions over a more affordable one with fewer options, the cheaper option is probably the way to go.

Final flourish The last of the paint has dried and the trades have left the building, but your new reno needs a little something. How about some art?

W

hen buying artwork many people will tell you to buy what you love, not what you think will make money. While this is in many ways true, it does pay to do a little research. When looking at a piece of art, f rst investigate the artist. Apart from the basics of age and where she lives, f nd out what galleries the artist has shown in, any awards or prizes she has won, any catalogues the artist is featured in or

exhibitions where her work has been shown. You want to build up an idea of the artist and if her work is going to be valuable in the future. Now look at the piece of art in context. Is it typical of the artist’s style? What period in the artist’s career did it come from? What other work does the artist do? All this research is helping you build a picture and make an informed decision. Once you have settled on a

work, now it is time to determine if the price is reasonable. Buying art is like buying property – ultimately it is worth whatever buyers are

prepared to pay, but through your research you will f nd learn if the price the dealer is asking for is fair. Take a look at the records of sales of

Once you have decided to invest in art, there is no need to head to Brisbane to go shopping. The Sunshine Coast has some fantastic galleries brimming with work by local, national and internationally renowned artists. similar pieces and works by the same artist. And remember, many dealers will be prepared to negotiate. You have probably heard about an art work’s provenance. But what is it? Provenance is like a biography of the artwork, from the moment it was completed until today. Good provenance in the art world is everything, so before you hand over your money, be sure to collect all the paperwork attached to the piece – this will include who has owned it, where it has been shown, awards it has won and any books or catalogues it appears in – to have a thorough record of provenance.

Hanging around

How do you arrange your art, pictures and photos so they really shine? Here are some tips.

TIP 1

Most home owners make the mistake of hanging art too high. When hanging art in living areas, aim to get the centre of the piece at eye level.

TIP 2

When arranging images a common problem is that they are not in scale

with the room or the furniture. If your artwork or photo just doesn’t sit well in the room it’s probably because it is overwhelmed by the sofa or is too large for the wall.

TIP 3

When arranging pictures ensure that they match your style of decor. As a general rule, symmetrical arrangements suit more formal and ultra-contemporary spaces, while vintage, eclectic and casual homes carry asymmetrical arrangements well.

TIP 4

Grouping: When grouping several pieces together grab some large sheets of paper, a pencil and scissors. Trace around each frame and cut out the pieces. Lay out the pieces of paper on the f oor and play around with groupings. When you are happy, using painters tape, stick the papers up onto the wall and play around again. When it looks good, you can start hammering in your hooks for your pictures. Here are some tips to continued over >

grouping photos, frames and artwork: • When dealing with a group of photos of different shapes and sizes, keep larger pieces at the bottom and towards the left of the group. • If one pieces stands out from the others, use it as the centrepiece and arrange the smaller pictures around it. • Goupings work best with an odd number of pictures. • Asymmetrical arrangements work really well when there is some element that unif es the group. Having the same coloured frames or ensuring all images have something in

common – such as they are all portraits – is the way to make this look a winner. • When hanging several pieces around the room, it can be hard to unify them when doors and windows keep them separate. Try to keep the middles of the pictures even, to create this uniformity.

Make sure your artwork can be seen by ensuring it is well lit with adequate lighting, but always keep artwork out of the way of direct sunlight.

Having the same coloured frames is the way to make this look a winner
