t has been a little noisy at home lately. With the bobcats, cement mixers and large trucks coming and going, our two-year-old son is beside himself with excitement. He stands on the outdoor deck, hands on hips, overlooking the project site and barking occasional orders. As I said, he’s in his element. You see, we are doing a little backyard renovation and having a shed built. The original plan for a simple garden variety has been replaced - much to hubby’s pleasure - with a building that can house the boat, tools and storage items. It also includes a small backyard patio. The days of the humble shed have given way in recent years to larger varieties that can add storage space, caravan and boat accommodation, a home gym or entertainment area to a property. Real estate agents say that a good sized, modern shed can add just as much value to the home as a pool. Either way, the extra storage space will be useful! Speaking of backyard projects, this month we tell you how to build an outdoor cubby house for the kids and how to keep your garden green and healthy this winter. Happy renovating!

Home comforts There is no better time to invest in new carpet or a rug than winter. It will warm your house in both appearance and temperature. There are a few things to take into consideration when choosing carpet. Firstly, consider the way you live – do you have pets or young children? DIY: CUBBY HOUSE
I
t’s every young child’s dream – to have a little hideaway of their own. And, in many cases it’s also a dream of their parents to create this perfect little house for their children to enjoy as they grow. A backyard cubby house will create many wonderful memories and My Renovation tells you exactly how to construct one of your own…
Get the kids involved by getting their help to decorate and paint the cubby house. They will love making it their own.
STEP ONE Draw a sketch of what you want to build including length, width and height requirements. Pre-order the required timber from your local supplier and ask them to pre-cut the sections if they can.
STEP TWO Measure out on the ground where the base supports will go. Dig your holes for the four main structural hardwood supports. Place the supports in the holes and fix them vertically level with pine off-cuts. Fill the holes with quick dry cement and wait one day for it to dry. STEP THREE Start building the main base for the cubby floor using four 145mm x 75mm pine pieces. Bolt these to the four main supports ensuring they are level. STEP FOUR Once the four main beams are

RENOVATE Cost effective solutions for every budget.
DON’T MOVE... bolted to the hardwood supports start fixing the pine wood, 90mm x 45mm, supports for the floor to the main beams. Once the floor supports are in place start fixing the decking pine to the floor supports using domed decking nails. STEP FIVE After the floor is complete, start building a small cubby of your own design and fix it to the floor or the main beams. Simple designs of four walls and a roof are easy and remember to place wall bracing every 45cm for larger walls. Once the walls are up, and supported to the floor and each
side of the wall, place sheeting to each wall and screw in place. STEP SIX After the walls are done start the bracing for the roof and place the corrugated roof to the beams and screw in place. Build the rail around the outside of the cubby house by fixing rails to the main hardwood supports. Place pine batons in between the main rail support and the floor supports.
