Stand out from the rest by incorporating unique elements into your renovation project. My Renovation explores some innovative building materials…

SCYON MATRIX If you are looking for a way to give the exterior of your home a modern finish, consider using Scyon Matrix cladding. The product has a contemporary geometric, expressed-joint look, which can be painted to achieve any style. The experts from international building product manufacturer James Hardie have provided us with useful information about the Matrix material: WHERE CAN YOU USE IT? The product can be used in residential and medium-density applications wherever a modern or industrial design is required, including external walls in composite construction, upper-storey, ground-level extensions and internal feature walls. HOW IS IT INSTALLED? It’s relatively easy. The cladding sheets are installed with Scyon cavity trim battens. The expressed joint is created easily using a 10 millimetre packer. Sheets are sanded

smooth and pre-primed for paint application and a high-quality finish. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? A variety of looks can be created thanks to the availability of square and rectangular panels. You have the option of creating horizontal and vertical stripes right through to geometric patterns. Sanded sheets give a flat, smooth finish and digital printing can add even more design options. The cladding’s resistance to cracking, warping and swelling means it can be painted in both dark and light colours. WHAT IS IT MADE FROM? Matrix cladding is made from Scyon, a lightweight cement composite with heavy-duty performance. IS IT EASY TO WORK WITH? Yes. It can be gun nailed and is easy to cut, just like timber. Shaynna Blaze has built a solid career educating the nation on what makes good home styling – and also, what doesn’t. Following November’s wrap up of television series, The Block – on which Blaze is a judge – the reality queen took time out from her busy schedule to chat with My Renovation about all things beautiful…

What are you working on right now? I’m halfway through filming series 10 of Selling Houses Australia, the last two episodes of Deadline Design, and I have three great private client projects in commercial and residential. Then (I’m) working on a rest. What life lessons have you taken away from your successful career?

Persistence is everything; if it isn’t working try another angle. My career has zigzagged and many times I thought it was too hard but by being persistent, and having the right people around you, you will eventually get there. What do you love about the interior design world? Creativity, freedom, beauty. I love the fact it is not just about pretty things but solving problems, changing people’s lives and exploring all types of styles and budgets. Where do you draw your inspiration from? It is a little cliché, but everywhere. You can’t single it down to suppliers, nature or people as each project is so different and has its own specific needs. I have to

look for inspiration in a multitude of places if I am wanting them to all have their own unique look. What advice can you share with home renovators? Do your research, refine your budget and make sure you, or the builder, is project managing and keeping it on time and on budget.

What is your favourite home styling colour, product and theme? I am a huge fan of the cool palettes of blue and teal and mixing with strong whites. I don’t have a favourite style and I constantly am mixing styles. I do love the base architecture of Victorian details. My favourite styling item is artwork, it can add colour, character and set the look for a room.

I love the fact it is not just about pretty things, but solving problems, changing people’s lives.

Is it quality, price or scratch-resistance? • Which rooms are going to have engineered timber flooring and how much will you need?

how to: INSTALL A RECESSED KITCHEN SINK STEP ONE You will first need to cut a hole in the countertop for the sink to be placed. Pencil in the outlines before you begin by placing the sink face-down. Measure the depth of the lip of the sink and mark a second line inside the first, the whole way around. TIP You should install the faucets to the sink before it is secured in place.

STEP THREE Next, place the faucet into the hole in the sink and secure it. Install the hoses and waste assembly. For advice, or directions, speak to your sink supplier.

STEP TWO Drill a hole into the corner of the sink position, inside the inner guideline. Now you can use a jigsaw to cut around the same guideline. Always make sure to check that the sink fits correctly into the hole.

STEP FIVE Check again to see if the sink fits. If you are happy with the result, tighten the clips to the underside of the counter.

STEP FOUR If the manufacturer has supplied a seal you may not need to caulk around the hole in the countertop. Otherwise, complete this task before installing retaining clips around the edge of the sink.

STEP SIX Give the sink a clean before hooking up the faucets.

Simon Kay from iLandscape suggests the following tips for keeping them at bay: • To detect lawn army worms in your lawn, place a damp tea towel on the turf at dusk for around 30 minutes. Check to see if there are any grubs stuck to the towel. • To control an infestation, there are a number of options. You can leave them for the birds to collect or use an organic or chemical pesticide to control. • After an infestation it is important to fertilise to assist in repairing and aiding growth of the grass.
