’m sure there are many people who love their homes but, given the opportunity, would like to change a thing or two. I’m one of these people. You see, our ensuite has the potential to be so much more. The large space is under utililsed and could do with a little styling. The double sink is great, but needs modernising in the tap department. Updating the showerhead and eventually installing a double shower is also in the plan. It’s one of those projects I’m yet to get around to doing. This is why I love this month’s four-page bathroom feature story. Sunshine Coast stylist and renovation queen Danni Morrison has shared her top 10 tips for updating your bathroom. From style through to remodelling advice, she has got it covered. Moss matters Architectural and interior designs have been greening up for some time now but the next 12 months will reveal a strong push towards an organic style. BATHROOM REVIVAL Sunshine Coast interior stylist Danni Morrison knows a thing or two about renovating. In 2015, she and her partner purchased an 18-year-old classic that was in need of some love. With hardwood floors, high ceilings and a tranquil location, the couple are transforming the home into a Hamptons-inspired masterpiece. She has also previously renovated a Warana beach house, and works alongside clients to create beautiful homes. Here, Danni shares her top 10 tips for bathroom renovations and styling.
1. Research and budget If you’ve never taken on a renovation before do some research into the relevant costs associated with the project. From there create a suitable budget (allowing an additional 10–20 per cent extra for incidentals) and stick to it. Whether you’re hiring a builder to commence and complete the entire project, or bribing your tradie mates with beer to help you on weekends, I recommend creating a spreadsheet with all forecasted costs. 2. Select your trades wisely This relates to your builder or your designer. Renovations can be painful especially while you’re still living in the space. You’ll have a demanding relationship before and during the process, so clear communication and mutual respect is key.

3. The design process Think about how your bathroom is currently utilised, who uses it and what’s important for each person. Using this information write a list of things you like about your existing space and a list of things you’d change. Discuss this information with your designer and builder to create a practical and functional space that you love.

Imagine... NO 4. Plumbing If it’s possible, keep the existing layout of the bathroom for a more cost effective renovation. While it still may be necessary to rework some pipes to suit your new fixtures, like a vanity or cistern, it’ll still work out less expensive than completely redesigning your layout. 5. Compromising and overcapitalising Be rational and reasonable with your decisions. I know you may feel that you absolutely must have those expensive European-inspired, Italian marble tiles because you love them so much. If you have a large budget to fit, go for it. However, think about each choice. I tend to allocate big expenses within my budget on the items that require quality such as taps and getting the plumbing spot on.

9. Selecting décor I love walking into a bathroom and experiencing a sense of luxury like you would in a hotel. It’s easy to create this sort of look and it isn’t difficult to find the right products. Install a new floating shelf and stack rolled up facewashers for guests, add a pretty vase, a hand mirror and fancy brush. For that real hotel feel, fill beautiful glass jars with shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser. Pop

The first is the existing style of your home and the second is resale. iagonal floor tiles have stood the test of interior design time. Not only do they look great, but the effect can create the feeling of space in a small bathroom or laundry. STEP ONE Like with many renovation flooring projects, the first step is to clean the floor. STEP TWO You will now need to dry fit the tiles to ensure they fit correctly. Potted colour Potted plants create a focal point and can dress up an outdoor garden, patio, deck or indoor room. Group pots or containers together for a colourful design. Even better, potted plants can be moved easily to suit renovations, gardening additions or changes.
Going up People are mistaken to think that vertical gardens are a relatively new trend. The concept is one that has been around for decades. A vertical garden is terrific as it can be used to cover an unpainted fence or wall. It will also brighten up a dull space.
