A word from our chamber… With Brady Sullivan, CEO

A

s Queensland’s most welcoming, dynamic and connected business community, the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce enjoyed numerous milestones and achievements throughout 2023. The chamber was responsible for almost $390,000 in community investment in the 22/23 financial year, was the driving force

behind Caloundra’s recent Queensland and Australian Top Tourism Town success, and worked to advocate for the Sunshine Coast community through projects like the Regional Competitiveness Survey. Three thousand attendees enjoyed 38 chamber events in the 22/23 financial year while 65 chamber-led markets facilitated vibrant community engagement. As we move into 2024, Caloundra will continue to position itself as a hub of opportunity with key developments proposed to call Caloundra home. Projects like the proposed Sunshine Coast Regional Art Gallery and the Coochin Fields festival site will be game changers for the region, propelling it onto the national stage as a leader in music, art and culture.

As two of the region’s crown jewels, the proposed projects will be vital to achieving the Queensland Government’s Towards 2032 tourism target of $44 billion in annual overnight visitor expenditure. The proposed projects will also improve the Sunshine Coast’s liveability offering and attract more young talent to support our region’s growing workforce needs. The Caloundra Chamber has been and will continue to strongly advocate for the Sunshine Coast Regional Art Gallery and Coochin Fields in 2024. The Caloundra Chamber team would like to wish the Caloundra community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to another year of connection, inspiration and advocacy in 2024.

Kim McCosker Caloundra Business Alliance (CBA) president

A few words from Kim

F

irstly, can the Caloundra Business Alliance (CBA) start by saying a massive thank you to the Sunshine Coast Council for its unanimous endorsement of the business plan for a state-of-the-art art gallery in the heart of Caloundra.

A large, modern, art gallery that is world-class, will attract world-class exhibitions. We have visions of seeing the Archibald prize work here, and works as big as the Elvis exhibition, Cartier and Chanel to name a few. There is such a demand for art and culture in Caloundra. It was only a few months ago that the CBA started the Caloundra Street Art Walking Tours. These walks are held on the last Thursday of every month between 9am and 10am, with a cup of tea or coffee prior at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery. Already these tours have had more than 138 participants – August’s tour resulting in a record 52 participants. Christmas is only weeks away and there is so much happening in Caloundra. Make sure you get to The Strand to see our fabulous Christmas Tree Lane Activation. With more than 45 local businesses displaying a variety of Christmas trees, it really is a visual treat. With much excitement, we can announce that Santa will be in The Strand for six days, from Saturday, December 9 from 9am to 11am. He will be back again from Monday, December 11 through to Friday, December 15, from 9-11am each day. Sit on Santa’s beautiful throne, tell him what you would like for Christmas and have

your photo taken for just $15. Finally, don’t forget to participate in our annual Mega Christmas Raffle. With more than 20 Caloundra businesses participating, and prizes including a two-night stay at Breakfree Grand Pacific, this extraordinary Caloundra experience is valued at more than $2000. It will be drawn on Friday, December 15. To enter, turn to page six for details. This is our final column for 2023. The CBA would like to wish everyone, all of our retailers, our customers, our residents and visitors alike, a warm and wonderful Christmas. Keep in mind that every time you shop local you are supporting someone’s dream and we thank you very much for that.

ESCAPE ROOM OZ We can hear you asking, “what exactly is an escape room?” Well, put simply, it is an interactive adventure where you must work together, as a team, to find clues and solve puzzles to escape a room within a set time limit. A gamemaster will be watching and listening to all your moves and help you with hints when you request them. A voucher or visit to Escape Room Oz is a great Christmas gift, or why not treat your team to a fun office Christmas party? It’s a great place to catch up with friends too, for an unusual and fun outing. Bond while bringing your heads together in an attempt to solve a wide range of puzzles in order to escape. Here’s an interesting fact about Caloundra for you. Captain John C Wickham named Caloundra’s headland Wickham Point in 1847, and, famously, cyclonic squalls marooned 13 men from their ship, the Queen of the Colonies, in April 1863 at present-day Moffat Beach. Queen of Colonies Parade now runs from the beach to the headland.

must visits

Okay, these might not exactly be hidden treasures, but they sure qualify as must-see gems! 1. CALOUNDRA LIGHTHOUSE Commandeering the Caloundra headland, Caloundra’s Lighthouses, are an iconic landmark offering breathtaking coastal views. The 1896 lighthouse, believed to be Caloundra’s oldest remaining building, was constructed with a timber frame and corrugated iron cladding. It was replaced in 1968 by the newer lighthouse. Visitors can explore the structures learn about their maritime history, and enjoy panoramic views of the region. 2. COSTIGAN MANGROVE BOARDWALK Located in Golden Beach, this quiet and easy-to-follow boardwalk offers a unique natural experience. Tranquil and great for all ages, the walk winds through a lush mangrove ecosystem, providing a close-up encounter with diverse birdlife and marine habitats. 3. PICNIC AT MONASH PARK, GOLDEN BEACH Where, you ask? This relatively unknown beachfront location provides plenty of space for kids to run and play, while you drink in those aqua-blue ocean views. Boasting both sandy and grassy areas for a picnic, Monash Park is tucked away from the main swimming and recreation areas. It’s great for a mid-morning or lunch-time picnic. Be warned, there can be a few midges around at times, so take some bug repellent. Shop Caloundra | Summer 2023 13

Top of the towns Caloundra. Home to beautiful beaches, unique stores, great cafes and pristine parks. Yes, we all know and love our town, and now the rest of Australia does, too.

I

t is definitely one of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic destinations and now it has been recognised among the nation’s top three tourism towns. After months of campaigning and celebration, Caloundra was awarded third place at the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards in September during a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra. The slice of paradise received the honour after first taking out the 2023 Queensland Top Tourism Town Award, which was held by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council in June. Brady Sullivan, the CEO of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, which spearheaded the campaign, says the Top Tourism Town Awards had propelled Caloundra onto the

nation’s tourism scene. As the team behind Caloundra’s awardwinning application, the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce proudly represented Caloundra on the national stage. “Our state and national success is a huge drawcard for Caloundra and the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Sullivan says. “Caloundra is well and truly on the map.” Mr Sullivan says the national recognition will help attract vital investment to the region, including the funds needed to deliver projects like the Sunshine Coast Regional Art Gallery. “Caloundra has been a loved holiday destination for countless generations and is at the centre of immeasurable family memories,” he says. “Our recent awards will attract more

Councillor Terry Landsberg, Caloundra Chamber CEO Brady Sullivan and digital storyteller Laura Pettigrew families and travellers to Caloundra and ensure our town continues to grow its already great tourism offering with drawcards like the proposed Sunshine Coast Regional Art Gallery.” A panel of judges decided the nation’s top three tourism towns from seven state winners including Victoria’s Ballarat, Tasmania’s Devonport, Northern Territory’s Katherine, Western Australia’s Mandurah, New South Wales’ Newcastle and South Australia’s Victor Harbor.
