his is the house where dreams c ome tr ue” c ould b e the inscription on the door-frame of architect Stefan Rier’s home in the historic village centre of Siusi, which was once the historic ‘Messner Haus’ (house of the sacristan). Partner of Italian studio NOA* architects with base in Bolzano, South Tyrol (Italy), Stefan has created his childhood dream of living in a hay barn at 1.050 m, softly implemented in the historic appearance of the local village cluster. Grown up in the small village of Siusi on the foot of the Sciliar-Catinaccio Mountain and Alpe di Siusi area (Unesco World Heritage), Stefan has spent many winters of his childhood playing with his friends in the village’s hay barns. ‘It was the best playground and we had so much fun jumping from the open upper floors into the soft, fresh hay!’ Stefan recalls. His childhood playground with open spaces and exposed wooden beams has become the main source of inspiration for his home, a contemporary version of a hay barn. He does not believe in the philosophy of ‘less is more’ and the ascetic interior style does not reflect him at all. His home is rather the opposite and shows an intriguing combination of high level clear-lined, contemporary architecture and a fantastic, circus-like surrealistic world of ‘(Alice) Stefan in Wonderland’ and Jacque Tati’s film ‘Mon oncle’, which has inspired him too. It also reflects his background as interior decorator and architect, ‘which are two different worlds’, he says. In fact his playful and humorous attitude towards life is showcased in his own home: two black (plastic) monkeys swing through the large space on pendant lamps, a huge copper turtle, pokes along unhastingly through the bathroom and a whole colony of white mice dances on the exposed beams and sills. ‘At some point I was asked by my wife Steffi, who has a more grounded approach to interior decoration, to limit myself, in order not to go too wild’, Stefan says laughing. Also when it comes to material choice, Stefan did not contain himself in his private home: from geometrical fabric that covers the large suspended cubes and terraces that are tied to the wooden framework, to wallpaper, laser cut metal that forms the staircase and relief-tiles that cover most of the kitchen and bathroom elements, Stefan’s creativity could run free and enabled him to experiment on indifferent levels. Faithful to traditional building typology of the area, Stefan opted for an outer shell which respects of the genius loci, while the interior design interprets space in a contemporary way. Therefore Stefan designed the building with a stone plinth for the lower levels, housing the garage and the guest apartment and a wooden timber frame construction on top, forming the hay stable that contains the private home of the architect. ‘I wanted to keep the emotions of the large, open space on three levels that still are so deeply anchored in my heart and are precious childhood- memories’. Apart from the three secluded cubes that hang in the wooden framework that contain the bedrooms, there is a continuous connection to the main floor with its living room area and kitchen. Also the subdivision of the three floors has been solved in an untraditional way, with the main floor

being an outward looking space and intended like a town square, where people meet and socialise. From archaic, ancient settlements to Frank Lloyd Wright’s ’Fallingwater’ house, the fireplace has always played a central role in housing. So it also does in Stefan’s home, where socialising, cooking and eating is happening around the warming fire of the centrally positioned, large fireplace. The higher one ascends on the decorative laser-cut staircase that winds across the space like a ribbon, the more intimate the rooms become: having the secluded bedrooms with partly open bathrooms on first floor, one reaches the most intimate space on top floor, dedicated to the sauna area and an outdoor terrace with whirlpool, which has becomes a natural and appreciated part of the daily living routine, thanks to its strategic position. ‘It is the space dedicated to inner and outer cleansing, the ideal sanctuary to withdraw after a busy day at work’, Stefan explains ‘… and so close to heaven’, he adds, laughing. It is the best spot to observe nature, the weather and have breathtaking views of the close-by Dolomite mountains and the valley. A part from a few minor windows, three façades of the building are almost completely made from a wooden shell, creating a discrete and inwards looking atmosphere, which protects from street noise coming from the main road, creating a more private and intimate space towards neighbouring houses. The large ground-to-roof glass façade creates a sense of openness and allows stunning views towards

Also when it came to colour choices for the interior, Stefan did not limit himself to traditional colour combinations but chose unexpected, untraditional colours like blue, turquoise and petrol for his mountain home. ‘My home is mirroring my life’, he says. In fact he has joined the two worlds in which he grew up to a harmonious and well working mix of colours and styles. ‘Choosing traditional materials such as wood, stone and felt on one hand and the different blues on the other, I combined the two worlds in which I grew up’, explains Stefan, referring to his childhood in the Alpine region of Italian South Tyrol and his youth and educational years spent in Italy and the Mediterranean areas, where the influence of using oriental patterns and colours comes from.
The interior design is shaped by the architectural supporting structure, having different cubes and terraces tied into the wooden framework, allowing light to circulate around the entire open space that comes from large roof skylights and the large glass front. ‘The main sensation of living in the house are its opening, its views and its light games on the walls, but what makes me most happy is when I observe an amused smile on the face of our visiting guests’, says Stefan. ‘It is a fun, playful space that evokes positive sensations, which we are so lucky to experience daily’, he says. Soon the modern barn will become once more playground. This time for their little baby-girl that is due in summer. ‘Life is fun and should not just focus on work’, he reveals.

The sauna on top floor has the best views towards the valley and the close by Sciliar Mountain thanks to the large front window and large skylights.
