LETTER FROM THE EDITOR It is a pleasant May morning in Belfast . I am having my breakfast and listening to BBC Radio Classics from my laptop. A popular melody by the great Czech composer Dvořák (Dvorzhak) - is being played. His name is hard to pronounce for those who are not native Czechs. Most listeners have no idea that this melody emerged somewhere in the middle of Europe. Nowadays, the world is connected by the Internet. Some say that without it, the world , as we know it, will cease to exist . But it will. The Earth has been around for millions of years without advances in technology via the world wide web. However, the world is interwoven by yet another network, far more important than the Internet. It is an invisible, delicate web of interpersonal relationships, friendships, love, help, faith and charity. It is undoubtedly more important and more reliable than the Internet and if we cherish it, is not prone to crashes. It provides more fulfilment and sense of belonging than membership of the biggest Face-book group. It is invisible, yet not virtual. It is real and helps us to overcome challenges scattered along our path in life reminding us of the beauty and the real meaning of our time in this world. I have mentioned charity and help. One of the first things I noticed when I arrived in Belfast - the numerous organisations, associations and agencies helping newcomers on their arrival here. Or people putting small change into a charity box at a shop counter, each for their own reason. This small gesture helps others and lessens the weight of metal in your pocket or purse (£3 in copper means approximately 1kg of metal). Maybe they don‘t know exactly what prompts them to give , but they have made a difference! To be honest, I give little to charity. Though I do make the effort to give blood every four months. I know that my blood will help save the life of someone I have never met . My blood group is A RH+ (as positive as this magazine). I have convinced myself the lucky people who receive my blood will become as positive as I am! (excuse the pun). Above all, by blood donation we express solidarity with others. If we are reasonably healthy, our body will compensate for the blood loss very soon. When we donate blood out of compassion for others, our heart is filled with a sense of having done something very worthwhile. It is perhaps the best present you will ever give someone, the gift of life, and it makes it ten times more precious that it will be to a stranger! Besides, a present like this cannot be bought. It is a message from the heart saying that we are not indifferent to the fate of others. This editorial is an appeal to those who have never donated blood. Try it. It is just a little jab of a needle, but the personal fulfilment it gives you in return is worth it. Two work colleagues of mine Karen and Iris regularly give blood. Karen feels it is vital to give blood which will save lives, and as a mother the fact that it may save a child‘s life is very important to her. Iris was prompted to begin blood donation when her own daughter required a blood transfusion at birth! Iris is now the proud owner of a silver badge (for 25 donations) and, at 38 donations, is working towards her gold!! Another plus factor relating to blood donation is that now many local community centres and church halls facilitate the sessions and it is no longer necessary to travel to central Belfast to give blood. EDITORIAL Májové ráno v Belfastu a já poslouchám u snídaně BBC rádio Classic z mého laptopu. Právě hrají velmi známou melodii velkého českého skladatele, s těžce vyslovitelným příjmením Dvořák pro ty, kterým není čeština mateřským jazykem. Většina posluchačů asi ani netuší, že tato melodie se zrodila daleko ve středu Evropy, ale líbí se jim. Svět je nyní propojen Internetem. Někdo říká, že bez Internetu už svět nemůže existovat. Ale může. Šlo to miliony let před tím a jde to i teď, když občas spojení vypadne, anebo kde ještě vůbec není ani elektřina. Svět je ale také protkán jinou sítí, mnohem důležitější, než Internet. Je to neviditelná křehká pavučina mezilidských vztahů, přátelství, lásek, dobročinnosti, charity, víry a pomoci. Je mnohem rychlejší a spolehlivější než Internet, a pokud o ni pečujeme, nemá výpadky. Dává lidem mnohem větší uspokojení a pocit, že k někomu patří, než členství i v té největší skupině na Facebooku. Je neviditelná, ale není virtuální. Je skutečná a pomáhá lidem překonávat zkoušky, které nám život klade do cesty, aby nám připomněl svou krásu a abychom si uvědomili, co je vlastně jeho smyslem. Vzpomněl jsem charitu a pomoc. To byla jedna z prvních věcí, které jsem si zde v Belfastu všiml. Spousta organizací, asociací a agentur, které pomáhají příchozím po příjezdu sem. Nebo lidé dávají při placení nákupu drobné do boxu u pokladny. Každý z jiného důvodu. Někomu se nechce tahat po kapsách těžké jednopencové či dvoupencové mince (3 libry v těchto mincích znamenají asi 1 kg kovu v kapse), jiný zase má dobrý pocit, že přispěl na dobrou věc. Sice neví na co, ale přispěl. Přiznám se, že já na charitu často peníze nedávám, pomáhám jinak. Snažím se darovat každé čtyři měsíce krev. Vím, že má krev pomůže zachránit během několika následujících hodin či dnů život někomu, koho sice vůbec neznám, ale protože mám pozitivní krev skupiny A RH+ (stejně pozitivní jako tento magazín), jsem přesvědčen, že lidé, kteří mou krev dostanou, budou stejně (nebo i více) pozitivní jako já. A když kráčím po ulici a vidím někoho usměvavého, říkám si - možná právě tenhle člověk dostal mou krev... Celosvětově je nejrozšířenější skupina O (46 %,) a dále skupina A vyskytující se hlavně u severských národů a v západní Evropě. Skupina B je nejběžnější v jihovýchodní Asii. Nejméně rozšířená je všude na světě skupina AB, např. ve Velké Británii tvoří asi jen 3 %. Protože i v České republice je nejrozšířenější skupina A (42 %), rozhodli jsme se uveřejnit výzvu pro naše krajany v Severním Irsku na straně 7-8. Darováním krve především vyjadřujeme sounáležitost s ostatními. Tělo snadno darovanou krev doplní, pokud jsme zdraví. Když darujeme krev, protože soucítíme se svými bližními, v našem srdci je pocit vděčnosti a radosti, jako když darujeme dárek. Tento dárek je ostatně něco, co se nedá jen tak koupit. Je poselstvím našeho srdce o tom, že nám osud našich bližních není lhostejný. Tento úvodník je i výzva pro ty, kteří krev ještě nikdy nedarovali. Zkuste to. Je to jen jedno malé píchnutí jehlou, ale ten pocit stojí za to.

TEACHER‘S LIFE IN PERU When you meet Lisa in the corridor of the school you might think that she is still a pupil herself. The only evidence that she can‘t be is the fact that she doesn‘t wear a uniform. The 28 years old German, who looks very young for age, works for one school year as a German language assistant in a Grammar School in Belfast. The Language assistant programme is organised by the British Council and the Pädagogischem Austauschdienst, the equivalent organisation to the British Council in Germany, among others they promote international exchange and cooperation in the school sector. According to the British Council in 2010-2011 2,500 English Language Assistants were sent overseas and over 2,500 Foreign Language Assistants are working in the UK. One out of these 2500 assistants is Lisa. But not only German but also French and Spanish assistants work in the school where Lisa works. She arrived in Northern Ireland last September after having graduated from university in 2010. Before she has started to study German and English to become a teacher Lisa travelled a lot. In 2005 she went to Peru and started to work as a volunteer in a primary school for six months in order to teach English or better she was trying to teach, because that was not that easy. Lisa describes the time as very important and eye opening

had no idea how to teach. One thing she knew was that she wanted to “help”. Eventually, she found herself in a classroom with 35 pupils who were all on a different level; half of the pupils were not able to read or to write yet whereas others were familiar with the alphabet so they were very bored. The school was very badly equipped and what was the most tragic thing was the fact that after the ﬁrst four years of primary school there was no further possibility for the pupils to continue their education. That is when the thought arose that education is probably one of the most important things in life and that the pure wish to help does not really help yet; you also have to know how to help and how to change things. So Lisa decided to go to university and study teaching. Now working in Belfast the situation is, of course, completely different. The school is very new and modern; pupils are prepared for their A- Levels and might attend the best universities in the world. Jeden Morgen nahm sie einen Bus, um ein ein halb Stunden aus der Stadt hinaus zufahren, hinein in die Vororte der zweitgrößten Stadt Perus, Arequipa, wo die Häuser immer kleiner und improvisierter, die Straßen immer schlechter und der Boden immer trockener wurde, um schlussendlich die Grundschule “San Juan Apostel” zu erreichen, die, so schien es, in der Mitte vom Nirgendwo lag, wo es kein ﬂießend Wasser und kaum Elektrizität gab. Nur ein ein halb Stunden trennen Welten voneinander. Lisa beschreibt sich selbst als sehr naiv, als sie nach Peru kam, konnte sie kaum ein Wort Spanisch, geschweige denn hatte sie Ahnung, wie man eigentlich unterrichtet. Einer Sache war sie sich sicher, sie wollte helfen, doch helfen, wie?! Sie fand sich selbst in einer Klasse mit 35 Kindern wieder, alle waren auf einem anderen Stand, die einen konnten schon

schlecht ausgestattet und was das Allerschlimmste war, war die Tatsache, dass es nach den vier Jahren Grundschule keine Möglichkeit einer weiterführenden Ausbildung für die Kinder gab, es gab einfach keine Schule für sie. In dem Moment wurde ihr klar, dass Bildung wahrscheinlich der Schlüssel für Entwicklung ist und eines der wichtigsten Dinge, um sein Leben selbstbestimmt in die Hand zu nehmen. Auch merkte Lisa, dass der Wunsch allein, helfen zu wollen, nicht ausreicht, man muss wissen, wie man helfen kann und wie man zu einem gewissen Wandel beitragen kann. Aus diesem Grund ging Lisa an die Universität und studierte Lehramt. Die Arbeit an der Schule in Belfast ist natürlich ganz anders, die Schule ist wahnsinnig neu und selbst in Vergleich mit deutschem Standard sehr gut ausgestattet. Ihre Schüler werden gerade auf das Abitur vorbereitet und haben die Möglichkeit, an den besten Universitäten der Welt zu studieren. Aber nichtsdestotrotz ist die Arbeit nicht weniger wichtig, sie ist einfach nicht vergleichbar. Hier geht es vielmehr um den interkuluren Austausch, darum ein

Das Lehrerleben in Peru Wenn man so den Schulkorridor entlang läuft und Lisa begegnet, könnte man meinen, sie sei eine Schülerin. Das einzige, was deutlich macht, dass das nicht sein kann, ist die Tatsache, dass Lisa nicht wie die anderen Schüler eine Uniform trägt. Die 28 Jährige arbeitet für ein Schuljahr lang als deutsche Sprachassistentin an einem Gymnasium in Belfast. Das Programm der Fremdsprachassistenz wird auf britischer Seite vom British Council und auf deutscher Seite vom Pädagogischen Austauschdienst organisiert. Das Ziel ist es, den interkulturellen Austausch zu fördern, die Fremdsprachenassistentinnen und -assistenten unterstützen die Fachlehrkräfte beim Fremdsprachenunterricht und unterrichten in ihrer Muttersprache, um einen Beitrag zu einem lebendigen und motivierenden Unterricht zu leisten. Laut des British Council entsandte Großbritannien 2500 Fremdsprachassisten ins Ausland um Englisch zu unterrichten und ebenso viele unterrichten momentan ihre Mutter-

Nun endet bald das Schuljahr und die Zeit der Assistenten ist vorbei. Lisas Freundin Cristina, die spanische Assistentin möchte gerne in Nordirland bleiben und sucht nach einer weiteren Möglich-

keit, Spanisch zu unterrichten. Lisa zieht wahrscheinlich weiter, es gibt immer noch viele Dinge zu entdecken und soviel zu lernen. La vida de una profesora en Perú Cuando te encuentras con Lisa en el pasillo del colegio se te perdonaría pensar que es una alumna aún. Lo único que la delata es la falta de uniforme. Esta joven de 28 años está trabajando durante este año escolar como auxiliar de conversación de lengua alemana en una Grammar School en Belfast. El programa de auxiliares de conversación está organizado por el British Council y el Pädagogischem Austauschdienst, su equivalente en Alemania. Estas organizaciones promueven el intercambio y la cooperación internacional en el sector educativo. Según el British Council, en el curso 20102011 2.500 auxiliares de conversación de lengua inglesa fueron a trabajar al extranjero y más de 2.500 auxiliares de conversación de lenguas extranjeras están trabajando actualmente en el Reino Unido. Lisa es una de esos auxiliares y el colegio en el que trabaja también cuenta con auxiliares de lengua francesa y española. Llegó a Irlanda del Norte el pasado septiembre tras graduarse en la universidad en 2010. Antes de empezar a estudiar alemán e inglés con vistas a ser profesora, Lisa viajó mucho. En 2005 fue a Perú y empezó a trabajar como voluntaria en una escuela primaria durante seis meses. Enseñar inglés a los niños de la zona no fue una tarea fácil aunque Lisa describe esta época como una experiencia muy importante y reveladora. Cada mañana cogía el bus desde el centro de Arequipa, la segunda ciudad más grande de Perú, y dejaba atrás la lujosa área residencial y las calles comerciales para llegar ﬁnalmente a la escuela primaria “San Juan Apóstol” una pequeña escuela en el medio de la nada donde hacía mucho calor y todo estaba

cubierto de polvo. No había agua corriente y la electricidad estaba disponible solo temporalmente. Lisa admite que la experiencia le hizo sentir muy ingenua porque cuando llegó a Perú apenas sabía cómo presentarse en español y, además, no tenía ni idea de cómo enseñar. Lo que sí sabía es que quería ayudar. Al ﬁnal, se encontró en una clase con 35 alumnos, cada uno con diferentes niveles académicos. La mitad de los alumnos aún no eran capaces de leer o escribir mientras que otros estaban tan familiarizados con el alfabeto que se aburrían mucho de repetirlo. La escuela estaba muy mal equipada y lo más trágico es que después de los primeros cuatro años de escuela primaria los alumnos no tenían más posibilidades de continuar con su educación. En este momento es cuando Lisa se topó con la realidad de que la educación es probablemente una de las cosasmás importantes en la vida y que el simple deseo de ayudar no es suﬁciente. Fue consciente de que también tienes que saber cómo ayudar y cómo cambiar las cosas. Así que Lisa decidió ir a la universidad y estudiar magisterio. Ahora, trabajando en Belfast, la situación es, por supuesto, completamente diferente. La escuela es muy nueva y moderna; los alumnos están preparados par

intercambio cultural. En un mundo cada vez más internacional, los auxiliares ayudan a transmitir una imagen más auténtica de las otras culturas y ofrecen la posibilidad de aprender una lengua más allá de un libro de texto. Los alumnos se enfrentan con otra cultura mientras que los auxiliares se encuentran en la situación de reflejar su propia cultura. Juntos se pueden cuestionar los estereotipos y, finalmente, descubrir que aunque somos todos diferentes, estamos fundamentalmente al mismo nivel y tenemos las mismas necesidades. A finales de mayo, el contrato de los auxiliares se terminará. Una amiga de Lisa, Cristina, auxiliar de conversación española, quiere quedarse en Irlanda del Norte y en este momento está buscando nuevas oportunidades para enseñar español. 1989 - The Big Velvet revolution. Freedom! Freedom! Freedom! ...and the Czech „democracy“... After 40 years under communist domination Czech people were enjoying the taste of freedom, with liberal travelling to the West, eating fresh raspberries in the middle of the winter in Vienna. Austria was the ﬁrst country where we were could go only with ID - no passport needed . It was an amazing time. I felt like Alison in the Wonderland! I was not the only one – people began to think they were in Heaven when they saw shelves in Viennesse shops crammed full of nice, non-useful things and probably for free and some began to „buy without paying“... No wonder then that a couple of weeks later you would spot in the windows of these same shops arrogant and derogatory notices warning Czechs to stay away in poor Czech grammar. Warnings such as; „Czechs, no steal!“ (Not conﬁned to Czech peoples only - sometimes also in another Eastern European languague Polish, Hungarian etc...). In 1992 - Czech MPs spent days and days debating with their Slovak colleagues about the choosing of a new name for the new country (it used to be The Czechoslovak socialis-

tic republic). So what should be the name of new country? The Slovak – Czech republic? The Czech-Slovak republic? Czechoslovakia? Czecho-slovakia? Federation of Czechs and Slovaks. It was crazy ..they spent a lot of wasted hours discussing even the position of the dash „“ in the name between Czech and Slovak!! The problem seemed to be insolvable, so in the end they decided, like King Solomon – to make two independent countries. That was the political decision only. Both of nations still feel like they are living in one country – and similarly, stupid arguments remain in Czech politics today. But a new Sherrif has appeared in town - the market economy! Banks, foreign investors looking for „Tax freedomland“, fraudulent investment funds, large shopping centres (Tesco, Lidl etc,). We also started to buy a water in the plastic bottles (although tap water is probably more healthy, but this is a better proﬁt for them). Some presenting exciting business opportunities for gullible Czech and Slovak people. Easy mortgages, credit cards, loans, shopping; Buy today, pay next year (and if you don’t - they take your house). Ambitious people, without basic knowledge about how a bank

works and makes its money, fall for those appealing offers and start up their own business without any prior experience - only enthusiasm...which is a one-way route to speedy bankruptcy! Where there is no real competition you can make your own rules. The banks and other multi-national companies (who usually bought over small Czech companies) did it... For Czech‘s bank it is normal practice - in some of them you have to keep a permanently deposited minimum of £30 pounds in your account. Each time when you are deposit money into your account or withdraw it then you will pay a charge of around £2 pounds for doing that. They will pay you back a comic interest (0.5 %) but they will charge you between £5 - £10 pounds monthly for „Account Maintenance“. In one calendar day in the Czech Republic, banks earn fees of around 3.7 million pounds.... Those sharks have no mercy...(and owners of Czech banks are mostly large foreign banks). It is not just banks who robs ordinary Czech people. Mobile phone operators are another example. One of them offers calls on its network free of charge and an extra 600 minutes for calls to all Czech networks for a ’mere’

For me, the most important thing a human being can and should enjoy is personal freedom - and as I felt my homeland was no place for „an old man“ - I decided - like my Great-Uncle (who went to Vienna years and years ago) – to travel somewhere, just for the experience, so one day I typed my surname into Skype and somebody with the same surname appeared in Belfast, N. Ireland, 1500 miles away from my home! Call it fate... Eden Language School Interview with Alison Gammell the Director at Eden Language School. I heard about Eden Language School through a friend and due to my own love of the English language and learning I decided that I wanted to ﬁnd out a little more. I looked on the website, www. edenlanguageschool. com, and found out that they use the Callan Method. I hadn’t heard of this method before so I immediately wanted to know more! So I gave Alison a ring and asked if I could come and meet with her. So I went along and met with Alison at the school and I found the whole experience to be….. She then invited me to stay and observe some lessons. On this particular Saturday there was a Stage 2 and a Stage 7 class and I was lucky enough to see both. The ﬁrst thing I noticed was how the teacher quickly corrected the student’s pronunciation of their words. I thought this was fantastic as I always want people to help me improve how I speak English but for some reason peo-

ple don’t like to correct how you speak; as long as you are understood people think that’s enough – but not for me and I believe most people feel the same way.

I really liked the g r e a t a t m o s p h e re in the class; the students all seemed to be very involved and passionate about the class. It’s an intensive method of learning but each of the teacher’s I saw were both enthusiastic and also humorous and I could see that the

student enjoyed this. There is a rule that when the door is closed the only language to be heard is English. I thought this was a great idea due to the different nationali-

ties in the class and it means that noone will ever feel isolated as everyone has the same ability level. I also learnt that the students and teachers occasionally go out together to socialise which is another great way of helping the language, in fact, after this interview I joi-

ned them for a social drink and was happy to see the great friendships between the students of the different classes. After the lessons I spoke with Alison and this is what she had to say: Vlastik: So Alison I believe you mainly teach English using the Callan Method, can you tell me a little more about this method? Alison: Yes, the Callan Method mainly focuses on spoken English, as you saw today, but the student will also work on their reading and writing skills. The Method has 12 stages; on completion of the 12th stage the student is then prepared for the FCE (First Certiﬁcate of English) exam. This is a Cambridge exam which is internationally recognised. There are Callan Method schools all over the world, mainly in Europe, Asia and South America but we are the only Callan Method School in Northern Ireland! Vlastik: How does the class work? Alison: The Callan Method class is very fast, the teacher

Learning asks the student questions and then provides the student with the answer word by word so all the student actually has to do is repeat! Vlastik: So not a lot of work for the student? Alison: That’s right. This is why the Callan Method is so good because the pupil will think and speak directly in English and will not have time to translate the question or answer into their own language. Vlastik: How many students do you have in each class? Alison: We have a maximum of 8 students in each class. We know that smaller class sizes provide a more intensive class and therefore the student has much more time with the teacher. Vlastik: How do the students understand the new words the teacher introduces? Alison: Each student will receive a book, which also has a CD, and the new words are translated into the student’s mother tongue. The CD is also a great way for the student to practise their English in their free time outside of school.

Vlastik: Can students come to school simply to see how the Callan Method works? Alison: Yes, of course! In fact, we offer the first lesson for FREE so the student can decide if they like this method of learning. However, we find it is very rare that people don’t come back as they enjoy how the class works. Vlastik: So how does a student get started with Eden Language School? Alison: Well, first of all, I will have a short meeting with the student and during this time I will give a short, spoken test to assess the student’s level. I can then advise the student the days and times of the class for their level. It may be that the student is a complete beginner so there may be a short waiting time for this class to begin but generally no more than a month. We have classes 7 days a week but mainly in the evenings and weekends. We know that our students are either working or studying full time so it’s important that we schedule the classes to work around the students.

Alison: Absolutely! The Callan Method can teach speakers of ALL levels. Vlastik: How often do the students study? Alison: Each group studies twice a week. Each class is for 2 hours, we have a 50 minute lesson then a short break and then another 50 minute lesson. Vlastik: What about exams, how will the student know how they are progressing? Alison: There is an exam at the end of each Stage of the Method. The exam takes about 50 minutes to complete and providing the student passes they will move onto the next Stage. It is very rare that students fail the exam.

Vlastik: Finally Alison, what would you say to anyone reading this article? Alison: I’d say, come along to Eden Language School! We are here to help you! Venture Outdoors are delighted to be submitting a double page feature for NI Life. Venture Outdoors for a Summer Stroll or a Perfect Picnic This summer there is no better way to explore Northern Ireland than by packing a hamper full of sandwiches, cakes, crisps and heading off to experience some of the most beautiful walks and picnic spots in the region. Just a few walking tips Walking is an excellent natural exercise that can help you stay healthy, keep happy, enjoy time with friends and family and learn more about your local area! Before you venture out on a summer stroll make sure you are adequately prepared. Layer your clothing as summer weather can still be cold in the morning and evenings, with warmer spells in the middle of the day. Wear short sleeve shirts with a ﬂeece or jacket over it that is easy to remove when the sun starts to come out. Make sure you also prepare for summertime showers so bring a rain jacket along to be on the safe side. Bring sun cream and hats so that the sun‘s harmful rays don’t affect you. Sun cream and hats are necessary for outdoor activities all year round, especially for children. Bring plenty of water with you as walking or simply sitting and enjoying the sunny weather requires you to re-hydrate your body, so it is a good idea to drink water throughout your walk. Venture Outdoors has hunted high and low and listed below the very best places for you to throw down your rug this summer after experiencing one of the many

scenic walking routes through out the region. Broughshane, County Antrim Broughshane is known as the Garden Village of Ulster thanks to its summer floral displays. Over 75,000 flowers are planted annually winning the village many national and international awards such as Ulster in Bloom, Britain in Bloom, the European Entente Florale and Nations in Bloom. Beside Broughshane is Little Acorn Wood. This is a 16-acre community woodland developed and managed by the Woodland Trust which has been created along a delightful riverside path. As you walk down this path you would expect to see the Dipper, Heron, Kingfisher, Mallard, Moorhen, Yellow Wagtail and Meadow Brown Butterfly plus a collection of exotic ducks in the pond. This picturesque part of Northern Ireland possesses a real rural community feel and is the perfect spot for a summer picnic. Castle Coole, County Fermanagh This 18th century mansion located on the shores of Lower Lough Erne was designed by James Wyatt and completed in 1798 for the 1st Earl of Belmore. The interior was created by some of the leading craftsmen of the 18th and 19th century. Castle Coole is widely regarded as one of Ireland‘s finest Neo-classical houses. Beech Wood provides a stunning back drop to the mansion and there is a tranquil walk through this unspoilt wood. The wood was planted around 1709 with a mixed group of beech, oak and scots pine and still has oak trees dating back to the early 18th Century. There are some lovely places to stop here and have a picnic right in the middle of a natural paradise. There is also a short ‘Castle to Castle’ cycle route signed right through the heart of Enniskillen. 90% of the route is traffic free and should suit families with children who are confident cyclists. The route follows the Kingfisher trail, National Cycle Network Route 91, on well surfaced roads between the

magniﬁcent Enniskillen Castle and Castle Coole. Mussenden Temple & Downhill Demesne, County Londonderry Mussenden Temple is a great spot for a picnic perching dramatically on a 120 ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland. This unique spot offers spectacular views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and east to Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head. The temple itself was built in 1785 as a summer library. Its architecture was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome. It is dedicated to the memory of Hervey‘s cousin Frideswide Mussenden.

Portmuck Harbour, County Antrim This harbour is bit of a hidden gem at the north eastern tip of Island Magee. The National Trust own and manage the coast on either side of Portmuck harbour and have provided excellent trails for visitors to enjoy the stunning coastal scenery and dramatic views out over to Scotland. This harbour is the perfect spot for a family day out with a number of walking trails to suit walkers of all ages and abilities. Mount Stewart Lake & Gardens, Co Down The famous gardens at Mount Stewart were planted in the 1920s by Edith, Lady Londenderry and have been nominated a World Heritage Site. Visitors can walk through magnificent woodlands, viewing the flora and lake, beautiful throughout the entire year. The gardens contain a remarkable variety of species from all over the world such as a fine

Californian Redwood and Australian Cordylines. Particularly look out for the Magnolia Campbellii planted in the 1920s and flowering for the first time on April Fool’s Day in 1956. Lady Londonderry spotted the magnificent bright pink bloom on the highest branch and thought that someone had played a joke on her but to her delight, it was the first of many blossoms to appear every springtime ever since. In 1956, Lady Londonderry handed the gardens over to the care of The National Trust and noted “Gardens are meant to be lived in and enjoyed and I hope they may long continue to be a source of pleasure to those who visit them”. What better way to enjoy these fine surroundings than to dander around the grounds and enjoy a small picnic with your friends and family as you bask in the nature all around. Minnowburn & Giant’s Ring, Belfast – 2.1 miles The best time to walk around Minnowburn and Giant’s Ring is on a summer time morning as the mist hovers just above the River Lagan. When sampling this mysterious scenery it’s easy to see why C.S Lewis drew so much inspiration from this special place. This trail explores the old Terrace Hill estate lands and remarkable Beech trees of this area of South Belfast. Farmland, river bank, wetlands, woodlands and a formal garden make up this lovely path. It is steeped in history, and is part of the Lagan Valley Regional Park system. As you leave National Trust lands and enter Ballynahatty you pass through the famous Giants Ring, a Neolithic earthwork circle set in the middle of beautiful farmland. Oxford Island, County Armagh – 4 miles This trail takes in the Oxford Island National Nature Reserve, a haven for summer wildlife. Visitors can explore a range of habitats from woodlands to reedbeds. The trail also takes in Kinnego Marina, from here visitors can enjoy a boat trip around the secluded bays and scenic views of Lough Neagh. Croaghan, County Antrim – 6.5 miles Croaghan provides an ideal circular spring stroll rewarding walkers with stunning panoramic views over to Rathlin Island, just off the Antrim coast. At this time of year the walk cuts through colourful hillsides and crisp forest tracks that hug the perimeter of

Slieve Donard, Commedagh and Bearnagh, The Mourne Mountains in County Down 10.9 miles This is a challenging hill walk with some strenuous ascents, but it is certainly well worth it. The walk takes in 3 of the 4 highest peaks in the Mourne Mountains (Slieve Donard 853m, Slieve Commedagh 765m, Slieve Bearnagh 739m) and also the Brandy Pad, a well-trodden and infamous smugglers track.
