DISAPPEAR

KAYBOLUŞ, literatürün kentsel mekân ile kamusal alana yansımasıdır.

Kurgusal bir hikâye ve fiziksel gerçeklik arasındaki çizgileri bulanıklaştırır.

Projenin çıktılarından olan mobil uygulama aracılığı ile Kemeraltı bir kentsel sahneye döner. Arnavut kaldırımı sokakları, bitişik nizam yapıları ve örtük avlularıyla seyircinin geçmişte, şimdi ve kurgusal gelecekte bir dizi anlatılar ile kaybolduğu uygulama, kamusal alanda hareket yoluyla hikâyeler anlatır.

DISAPPEAR is the projection of literature to public space and urban landscape. It is about blurring the lines between a fictional narrative and our actual surroundings; the reality. Disappearance, resulting with an urban application turns Kemeraltı into an urban stage; with its cobblestone streets, attached buildings and tacit courtyards. The audience will observe the area episodically as they get lost in the past, present and in an emerging fictional future. Through a series of nonlinear audio augmented narratives, the application tells stories through movement in public space.

UrbanTank is a not-for-profit organization addressing varying topics on various scales and contexts of urban environment. The organization supports community-based entrepreneurial enablement in urban environments through research and interventions in the form of public installations, exhibitions and publications. Within the wide spectrum of urban initiatives, UrbanTank interrogates for experimenting new tools and methods. By ultimately bringing human-centered solutions for urban life, its goal is to explore how people relate to cities and public spaces relate to people today.

MeetLab is Budapest based studio focusing on interdisciplinary art and technology research. It explores new ways of creating artistic projects that cannot be labeled by the present standards; wishes to break the boundaries that separate performing or applied art from the technological world or design. Our goal is to find the synthesis between ART and TECH through interdisciplinary projects and invent new categories for ourselves that are based on a real contemporary view of the constantly changing world around us.

SAAT KULESİ Andrei şehre ulaştığında henüz hiçbir şey bilmiyordu. İnsanlar, sokaklar, dükkanlar, hepsi de diğer her yerde olduğu gibiydi. Kimisi çayını yudumluyor, kimisi işine koşturuyor, kimisi ise yalnızca durmuş başının üzerinde uçan güvercinleri seyrediyordu. Ama Andrei bu hiçlikle ilgili bir şeyler biliyor olmalıydı zira buraya gelme sebebi buydu. Şehrin havası garip bir titreşimle doluydu; kahvesini yudumlayan ya da meydanda öylece duranlar bunun farkında değildi. Fakat Andrei farkındaydı.

Bu sessizliğin ya da yakınlardaki tramvayın belli belirsiz gıcırtısının ardında bir sır vardı, artık hangisi hoşunuza giderse.

Andrei şehre ulaşana dek epey yol katetmişti. Buraya gelmesi gerektiği fikri, rüzgarlı çöllerin uğultulu sessizliğinde ve daha bile rüzgarlı dağların zirvelerinde doğmuştu zihninde. Kendisine dair bir fikir de o anlarda doğmuştu sanki.

CLOCK TOWER When Andrei arrived to the city, he knew nothing yet. The people, the streets, the shops were exactly the same as everywhere else. Some were sipping their tea, some were rushing to work, some were just standing watching the pigeons flying over their head. Andrei, however, must have known something about this nothing, because that was the reason he came here.

The air in the city was filled with a strange resonance; the people who were sipping their tea or just standing on the square didn’t notice it. Andrei did, though. There was a secret behind this silence, or in the distant creak of the nearby tram, if you like.

Andrei had come a long way before he arrived to the city. The idea that he had to come here was born in his head in the whistling silence of windy deserts and even windier mountaintops. It felt like the idea of himself was also born in that same moment.

Andrei –kendisine utana sıkıla verdiği isimdi bu- yıllardır onu tanıyan birileriyle konuşmamıştı. Andrei’nin yasal ve resmi ismi, eğer herhangi bir isme sahip olmuşsa bile, uzun zamandır kayıplara karışmıştı. Andrei’nin olduğu kişinin uzun zaman önce kaybolmuş olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Andrei artık yalnızca Andrei’di ve buradaydı, olması gereken yerde.

Andrei — as he timidly called himself — had not spoken for years with anyone who knew him. Andrei’s official, legal name, if he ever had any, has long been lost. We could say that the person who Andrei was, disappeared a long time ago. Andrei was only Andrei now and he was here, where he had to be.

Bazıları kaçtıklarını söylüyor, bazılarıysa suyollarında, aşağıda, şehrin derin köklerinin arasında yaşadıklarını ya da denizin onları alıp götürdüğünü düşünüyor. Belki ölmüşlerdir. Belki de hala burada bir yerlerde bizimledirler.

Some people say they ran away, others think they live in the canals, down in the deep roots of the city or maybe the sea took them all. Maybe they died.

Maybe they are still here with us somewhere. There are also some who might know something about the ones who knew something for sure, but they’ve all disappeared as time went by.

İŞARETLER “Konak’a git ve sağa dön. Orada başlıyor,” denmişti Andrei’ye Kemeraltı’na gidiş yönüyle ilgili olarak. Merkeze kendi bulduğun yoldan ulaş. İnsanlar hiçbir zaman aynı yönden iki defa gitmez. Caddeler zaman zaman değişiyormuş gibi görünür. Günden güne binalar ortadan kaybolur. Bazen ön cepheleri kalır geride, ama çoğu zaman tamamen ortadan kaybolurlar.

Buranın henüz kesin bir haritası yok,” diye açıkladı meydanda simit satan biri. “‘Kemeraltı’na Çıkar’ yazılı işaretler görebilirsin, ama takip etme onları, seni yanlış yönlendirebilirler.”

“Nereye yönlendiriyorlar öyleyse?” diye karşılık verdi Andrei.

“Bilmiyorum. Hiç cesaret edip de bakmadım.”

SIGNS ‘‘You start from Konak, and you go straight in.’’ Andrei was told, when he asked for directions to Kemeralti. ‘‘To reach its center, just find your own way.

People can never go the same way two times. The streets seem to change from time to time. Buildings disappear from one day to another. Sometimes their facade remains, but most of the times they disappear completely.

There is no exact map about it yet.’’ the man selling pastries on the square explained. ‘‘You can see signs saying: ‘Kemeraltı’na Çıkar’, but don’t follow them, they might mislead you.’’ ‘‘Where do they lead me then?’’ Andrei replied. ‘‘I don’t know. I never dared to see.’’

Boş antrede eski bir gramofonun sesi yankılandı. Andrei konuşacak birilerini bulmak adına etrafta dolanıyordu ama ortada birileri var gibi gözükmüyordu. Gramofondan çıkan ezgiyi mırıldanırken tavana asılı halılara baktı.

The sound of an old gramophone echoed in the empty hall. Andrei was walking around to find someone to talk to, but it seemed that there was no one there. He watched the carpets hanging from above as he was humming the song from the gramophone.

“Nereden biliyorsunuz bu şarkıyı?” diye sordu yukarıdan bir ses. Andrei konuşan kişiyi göremiyordu. “Aslına bakarsanız bilmiyorum. Bir sorum olacak ama,” diye cevap verdi. Andrei herhangi bir cevap bekledi, ya da en azından bir onaylama, ama o kişiden hiçbir yanıt gelmedi. Belki dakikalar sonra yaşlıca bir kadın ona yaklaştı ve Andrei kadına kaybolan insanları sordu. Kadın ona yaklaşırken yavaş yavaş konuşmaya başlamıştı. “İnsanlar burada hiçbir iz bırakmadan kaybolurlar.

‘‘How do you know this song?’’ asked a voice from above. Andrei didn’t see the person talking. ‘‘In fact I don’t. I have a question though.’’ he replied. Andrei was waiting for some kind of an answer, or acknowledgement at least, but the person didn’t say a word. Maybe minutes later on older woman approached him and Andrei asked about the disappearing people. As she was walking closer and closer she slowly started to talk. ‘‘People disappear here without a trace. Nobody knows why. If you ask a hundred people, you’ll get a thousand different explanations. You are here because of this, aren’t you?’’ Andrei nodded. ‘‘You just have to wait a little and you’ll see.’’

Andrei told me later on that this was not entirely true; however, what the truth was, he couldn’t tell either.

KOTÇULAR

JEANS SHOP

Andrei kalabalık tarafından tamamen sarmalanmış haldeydi. Kendisi ağır adımlarla yürürken onlar her yerdelerdi. Bir mırıltılar ve homurtular kakofonisiydi bu, gün içerisinde sokakları dolduran adamların ve kadınların uğultulu mekanizmasıydı. Geceleri tek bir ses duyamadığınız sokakların ta kendisi. Bir esnaf, Andrei’yi anlamadığı dilde bir soru sormak için durdurdu.

Andrei’nin yüzündeki donuk ifadeyi gören esnaf, sorusunu bozuk bir İngilizceyle yeniden sordu:

Andrei was completely surrounded by the crowd. They were all around him as he was walking around with a slow pace. It was the unsettling cacophony of mumblings and mutterings, the humming mechanism of men and women that filled these streets during the day. The same streets where you couldn’t hear a single voice at night. A shopkeeper stopped Andrei with a question he didn’t understand. Seeing his dull expression the shopkeeper repeated his question in broken English:

“Pantolon ister misin?”, “Hayır, ihtiyacım olan başka bir şey,” dedi Andrei.

“En iyi pantolonlar bende, sana garanti ederim, Kemeraltı’nda bulabileceğin en iyi kot pantolonlar bunlar. Ne diyorsun?” Andrei en sonunda adamın yüzüne adamakıllı bir şekilde baktı, bir yabancıya kot pantolon satmaya çalışan bu adamın yüzünde neredeyse çaresiz denebilecek bir ifade vardı.

Andrei adamın ardındaki dükkana baktı ve başka kimsenin olmadığını gördü.

‘‘Do you want jeans?’’ ‘‘No, I need something else.’’ said Andrei. ‘‘I have the best jeans, I guarantee you the best jeans you can find in Kemeralti. What do you say?’’ Andrei finally looked thoroughly at the man, he had almost a desperate look on his face just to sell a bunch of jeans to a stranger. Andrei looked past the man to the shop and saw that there was nobody else.

“Yalnız mı çalışıyorsun?” diye sordu Andrei.

“Valla kardeşim, öyle. Ama eskiden öyle değildi. Eskiden benim için çalışan bir oğlan vardı, genç bir delikanlı. Üç ay beraber çalıştık ve sonra kayboldu.

Eh, ne yaparsın?” “Öylece hiçliğe mi karıştı yani?” diye sordu Andrei.

“Nereye karıştı bilmem,” diye yanıt verdi adam. “Kayboldu işte. Pantolon istemediğine emin misin?”

‘‘Do you work alone?’’ he asked. ‘‘Well, brother, I do. But I did not used to. I used to have a boy working for me, a young fellow. For three months we worked together and then he disappeared. Well, what can you do, right?’’ ‘‘He just disappeared into nothingness?’’ asked Andrei. ‘‘I do not know where.’’ the man replied. ‘‘He just disappeared. You sure you don’t want jeans?’’

ŞAMBALİCİ Kalabalık Andrei’yi iç içe geçmiş standlar ve dükkanların olduğu bir noktaya götürmüştü. Dondurmalar. Taze sıkılmış meyve suları. Şambali denen bir tatlının satıldığı bir dükkan. Andrei satıcıya yaklaştı, kayboluşlarla ilgili bir şeyler sormak için bütün cesaretini toplaması gerekmişti.

“Bilmiyorum efendim,” diye yanıt verdi satıcı ilgisizce. “Bu konuda o kadar da çok düşünmüyoruz diyebilirim. Sanki sonsuzluktan beri olan bir şeymiş gibi geliyor. Ne desem bilemiyorum çünkü çok da umursamıyorum bu durumu.”

Andrei bana daha sonraları, bunun tam olarak doğru olmadığını söyledi, ancak doğru olan neydi, kendisi de söyleyemiyordu.

ŞAMBALİCİ The crowd led Andrei to a spot of intertwined stalls and shops. Ice creams.

Freshly squeezed juices. A store, where a dessert named sambali was sold.

Andrei stepped close to the vender and gathered all his courage to ask about the disappearances. ‘‘I do not know sir.’’ The vender reacted neutrally. ‘‘I guess we do not think about it that much. It feels as if it’s been happening since forever. I really do not know what to say, you’ll see it yourself, you just have to wait.’’

Andrei told me later on that this was not entirely true; however, what the truth was, he couldn’t tell either.

ŞERBETÇİBAŞI Andrei Kemeraltı sınırlarındaki kalabalık yolda yürüyordu ki karşısına bir meyve suyu standı çıktı, daha doğrusu birkaç tane stand çıkmıştı karşısına.

Aralarından rastgele bir tanesini seçti ve içecekleri hazırlayan adamı seyretmek için durdu. Adam taze narın suyunu sıktıktan sonra Andrei’ye seslendi.

“Buralarda yeni olmalısın. O ‘şey’ yüzünden buradasın değil mi?” Andrei başını onaylarcasına salladı. “Araştıracak bir şey yok,” diye devam etti adam.

“Biz bununla yaşamayı çok uzun zaman önce öğrendik. Bazen, bir meslektaşın sabah işe gelmediği oluyor. Hayatın bir parçası bu. Herkesin bir açıklaması var.”

“Peki seninki nedir?” diye sordu Andrei merakla.

“Eh, ben şahsen bunun aynalarla bir bağlantısı olduğunu düşünüyorum.

Ama karım bana katılmıyor. Bu yüzden bu konu hakkında konuşmamayı tercih ediyoruz.”

ŞERBETÇİBAŞI Andrei was walking down the busy road on the edge of Kemeralti, when he came across a juice bar or two to be more precise. He randomly picked one of them and stopped to watch the man preparing the drinks. After squeezing a fresh pomegranate juice the man called out to Andrei. ‘‘You must be new around here. You are here because of ‘that’ thing aren’t you?’’ Andrei nodded. ‘‘There is no need to investigate.’’ he continued. ‘‘We’ve learned to live with it a long time ago. Sometimes a colleague doesn’t turn up in the morning. It’s part of life. Everyone has a different explanation.’’ ‘‘And what is yours?’’ Andrei replied with curiosity. ‘‘Well, I personally think it is in connection with mirrors. But my wife doesn’t agree. So we rather don’t talk about it.’’

SARI KÖŞE

YELLOW CORNER

Andrei, birinin kendisine önceden bahsetmiş olduğu şu garip köşedeki aynaya bakıyordu. Daha sonraları Andrei’nin bana anlattıklarına göre, mahallenin labirenti içerisinde orayı bulması uzunca bir süreyi bulmuştu. Aynada kendi yüzünü incelerken bir yandan da ardında uzanmakta olan tepeyi görebiliyordu, o tepeye Kadifekale diyorlardı. Bazen güneşin bile seçilemediği kalabalık sokaklar arasındaki bu manzara oldukça absürt bir tablo sunuyordu insana.

Aniden bir çöp toplayıcısı durmuştu arkasında. Adam Andrei’yi seyrediyordu, Andrei de konuşmak için yeterli cesareti toplayana kadar uzunca bir süre aynadaki kendi suretini seyretmişti.

Andrei was looking into the mirror on that strange corner someone mentioned to him before. Andrei told me later on that it took him quite some time to find it in the labyrinth of the neighborhood. As he was examining his face in the mirror he also saw the hill emerging behind him, they called it Kadifekale.

The view seemed absurd in the dense streets where one couldn’t even see the sun sometimes. Suddenly a garbage collector stopped behind him. He was watching Andrei, and Andrei was watching his image in the mirror for a long time before he dared to speak.

“Bu köşeyle ilgili özel bir şeyler duydun mu?” diye sordu Andrei genç adamın aynadaki yansımasına çekingen bir şekilde, kafasını çevirmeksizin.

Arkasındaki çöp toplayıcısı sessizdi. Andrei başını çevirmedi.

‘‘Did you hear anything special about this corner?’’ Andrei asked the mirror image of the young man timidly without turning his head. The garbage collector behind him was silent. Andrei didn’t turn his head.

“Neyden bahsettiğini bilmiyorum,” dedi genç adam sonunda. “Burayla ilgili özel hiçbir şey yok. Bu her yerde oluyor. İşaretleri izle yeter.”

‘‘I don’t know what you mean.’’ said the young man finally. ‘‘There is nothing special about it. It happens everywhere. Just follow the signs.’’

Andrei bakışlarını büyüleyici yansımadan çevirdi ve bir işaret aradı. Gerçekten de anında bir sürü işaret görmüştü. Bozuk bir saat, seramik tabak gibi bir şey, duvara boyanmış kırık bir kalp, yaşamı için savaşmakta olan bir asma ağacının gövdesi ve daha birçokları. Genç adama hangi işareti kastettiğini sormak istemişti ama adam artık orada değildi.

Andrei turned away from the mesmerizing view and looked for a sign. In fact he immediately saw many of them. Three paralyzed clocks showing different times, a ceramic plate of some sort, a broken heart painted on the wall, a grape vine fighting for its life and many more. He wanted to ask the young man which sign he meant, but he was not there anymore.

SABUN MÜZESİ Şehre geldiğinde Andrei yalnızdı. Kimse tanımıyordu onu, kendisi de kimseyi tanımıyordu. Tek bildiği şey orada olduğuydu, o da eğer gerçekten oradaysa tabi. Bu şehri ilk duyduğu anı hatırlayamıyordu Andrei, varlığından hep haberdarmış gibi geliyordu, sanki binlerce kez anlatılmış bir hikayenin derinlerinde bir yerlerde saklanıyordu öylece.

SOAP MUSEUM When Andrei arrived to the city, he was alone. Nobody knew him, and he didn’t know anyone either. Only he knew that he was here, if he was here at all. Andrei couldn’t recall the moment he’d first heard of the city; it seemed like he had always known of its existence, as if it was just hiding somewhere deep down in a story that has been told a thousand times.

The only thing Andrei could recall partially from a vague memory of his, that there was a city where people kept disappearing without a trace or explanation for as long as anyone can remember. As nobody knew exactly where they’ve disappeared to, the location of the city remained a mystery as well.

Eşyalar, sokakların isimleri ve anılar, hatta insanlar bile herhangi bir yere kaybolabilirler, ama asla bir iz bırakmaksızın ya da tamamen değil anlayacağınız.

Bir şey ortadan kaybolduğu zaman, zaman geçtikçe yeniden ortaya çıkacaktır ya da en azından başka bir yerde var olmaya devam edecektir ama burada, bu şehirde değil. Andrei, bu şehri açıklanamaz bir sebepten ötürü bulduğundan, belki bir mucize sayesinde şehrin bilinmeyen bir diyarda saklanıyor olduğunu umut ediyordu. Objects, names of streets and memories can disappear anywhere else, even people can, but never without a trace, or completely, if you like. When something disappears, it will reappear as time goes by, or exists somewhere at least, but not here, not in this city. Ever since Andrei has found the city for some inexplicable reason, maybe with a help of a miracle, the city which itself was hiding in an unknown land, he had hope. And this hope led him to follow the mystery and made him determined to find the people who had disappeared or at least to reveal their secret.

KETEN HANI Andrei, üzerinde “Keten Hanı” yazan küçük bir isim levhasının asılı olduğu eski bir binaya rastladı. Binadan içeri girerken ciğerleri ağır plastik kokusuyla dolmuştu. Belki bin çeşit oyuncakla dolup taşan bir yerdi burası. Bu yerin bir depo mu yoksa bir dükkan mı, yoksa her ikisinin ortasında bir şey mi olduğu belirsizdi. Andrei binanın içerisinde yürüyordu. Belki de bunlar kimsenin satamadığı oyuncaklardı. Belki de bu şehirde oyuncak satın almanın hiçbir anlamı yoktu. Oyuncakların canlı renkleri etraflarındaki renksizlikle büyük bir zıtlık oluşturuyordu. Andrei aniden derin bir hüzne kapıldı ve eski binanın çıkışına doğru yürüdü.

KETEN HANI Andrei came upon an old building with a small sign that said “Keten Hani”.

As he entered the heavy smell of plastic filled his lungs. The place was full of plastic toys maybe a thousand different kind. It was unclear if the place was a storage or a shop or something in-between. Andrei was walking through the building. Maybe these are the toys that no one can sell. Maybe there is no point in buying toys in this city. The vivid colors of the toys were in great contrast to their surroundings. Andrei felt a great sadness suddenly and walked out of the old building.

STORY III: RESISTING MEMORIES

BÜYÜK DEMİR HAN Andrei entered a strange yard and he felt that he suddenly ended up in a different universe. The yard was covered with grass and trash, chickens were running around freely and they didn’t really care about the fact that they are in the middle of the city. At the other end of the yard there was a ruin, a trace of great significance. It belonged to a certain layer of the city that completely disappeared. They told Andrei that the city is in fact several thousands of years old, but nobody could tell him when did the people start to disappear.

The ruin was covered with trash and Andrei couldn’t figure the use of the building that used to be there.

MİRKELAM HAN Andrei sat down on the bench under the tree, someone offered him tea. As he was looking up he saw surveillance cameras above. Andrei was wondering how he could get the videos to see if someone have disappeared on the square. ‘‘Those are not working.’’ said the man coming with the tea. As Andrei was drinking his tea, he observed the numerous layers on the walls, the small houses built on top of an other, he counted the blind windows wandering why they were always closed. He’s found a thousand different traces of the disappearance, but he doubted that he could find a pattern in them, that these traces will eventually lead him somewhere.

He also looked in the eyes of people passing by, but he couldn’t recognize anything. The city didn’t take notice of Andrei or the disappearances and lived its life as usual, Andrei however kept on going.

HİSAR CAMİİ Andrei gördüğü her şeyi dikkatle inceledi. Bütün dükkanları ve neler sattıklarını bir bir not etti. Bir tür harita oluşturmaya çalışıyor, fakat dar sokaklarda kaybolup duruyordu. HİSAR CAMİİ Andrei observed carefully everything he saw. He took notes of all the shops and all the things they sell. He tried to draw a map of some sort, but he often got lost on the narrow streets. Later on he learned that the different streets offer different type of goods, there was a street for wedding dresses, a street for jewelries, a street for curtains and so on but sometimes there was an error in that pattern.

“A cami, suits and ropes.” he marked on his map. ‘‘Anything can be a trace.’’

THE TALLEST BUILDING

Andrei arrived to a two-story high building. He saw a textile shop at the bottom, and wide balconies above. Andrei hoped to find a lookout point, to examine the streets from a higher angle. He hoped to see, how the parts of the puzzle go together. He entered the textile shop carefully, and noticed an elevator inside. The elevator lifted him up to the third floor. A narrow staircase led him to the rooftop. Finally he was on the top of all Kemeralti and had a look around the panorama.

Önce altında bir marketin gizlenmiş olduğu camiiyi fark etti. Saat kulesi daha sonralardan yapılmış yeni bir binanın arkasında bir yerlerde gizleniyordu. Kot pantolonu dükkanındaki tüm iş arkadaşlarını kaybetmiş olan satıcıyı çok iyi hatırlıyordu. Gördüğü her şeyi hatırlıyordu fakat yapbozun parçaları birbirine uymuyordu. He noticed the mosque first, that hides a market underneath. The clock tower was hiding somewhere behind a newer building. He remembered very well the vender at the jeans shop, who’d lost all his colleagues. He remembered everything he saw, but yet the parts of the puzzle could not go together.

There was no pattern to notice, no clue, no solution. People, buildings, objects, relations, and feelings disappeared without a trace. Surely, new people had arrived in the meantime, new relations and feelings were born, new perspectives emerged continuously. But where all the others gone?

Nobody seemed to care.

Andrei raised his head to look around, he looked at the old yet beautifully adorned and ornamented mosque and then, as he was turning his head, he saw, among all these old yet lively buildings a house that looked abandoned for quite some time. The owner of the house, whoever it was, must have disappeared. Andrei asked the shoe polisher about the house. The man stood up packed his things and left without saying a word to Andrei.

YEŞİLDİREK PASSAGEWAY The passageway was full of shops but as Andrei looked up he saw that he was actually in an old hamam. He walked thru the series of domes and stepped carefully into the patches of colorful lights on the floor. At the end of the passage there was a barbershop.

Andrei stood in front of the barbershop and watched the young man working through the window. He went inside several times and waited for hours for his turn to come but the young man never called him.a While Andrei was waiting, observed the young man doing his job. After a while he started to follow him home, and to the grocery store. He followed him to meetings with friends, but the young man didn’t take notice of him and Andrei was waiting in vain for him to disappear.

ARAP HAN Andrei caught the sight of an older woman working in Arap Han, selling clothes. Andrei felt a strange connection to her, he didn’t know why. He watched the woman for hours with unusual attention. It seemed however that she never noticed Andrei. Actually, no one in Arap Han or any other place seemed to notice him. She kept on doing the same things over and over again every day and Andrei was waiting in vain for her to disappear.

Andrei umumi tuvaletin yanındaki merdivenleri tırmandı. Avlu içerisindeki iç içe geçmiş çatıları görebildiği ufak, kirli bir teras vardı. Avlunun yan taraftaki hamama bağlı olduğunu söylüyorlardı, zamanında tüccarlar develerini buraya bırakıyor, hamama uğradıktan sonra da bir başka otelin bulunduğu bir başka avluya geçiş yapabiliyorlardı. Andrei bunun doğru olup olmadığını kestiremiyordu. Tuvaleti yaşlı bir adamın işlettiğini biliyordu. Andrei bu seyir noktasına geldiği zamanlarda birden fazla kez rastlamıştı ona. Hava güzel olduğu zamanlarda Andrei balkondan öteki tarafta oturmakta olan yaşlı adamı görebiliyordu, diğer zamanlarda ise adam balkonun ve Andrei’nin altında otururdu. Mavi kulaklıkları kulağına takılı yaşlı adam öyle uzak, öyle dokunulmaz, öyle ulaşılamaz gözüküyordu ki Andrei onun her hareketini izlemeye karar verdi. Andrei went up the stairs next to the public toilet. There was a small, dirty balcony where he could see a strange tangle of rooftops inside the courtyard.

They say that the yard was connected to the hamam in the yard next door and that the merchants were leaving their camels here and after they went to the hamam they could go to another yard where there was a hotel. Andrei couldn’t tell if this was true or not. He knew that an old man maintained the toilet. Andrei came upon him several times as he went back to this lookout point. When the weather was good Andrei could see him from the small balcony above the toilet as he was sitting on the opposite side, otherwise he would sit under the roof below Andrei. The old man seemed so distant, so untouchable, so out of reach with hisa blue earphones that Andrei decided to follow his every move. The old man seemed to have a habit of entering the han from the back entrance of the place he would always take out his phone and his earphones and start to untangle the intertwined cables. Then the man would turn right and say hi to his friends from the secluded teahouse beside the public toilet. After this he would go and sit at his chair and listen to the radio all day. Andrei kept watching the old man from above as the man sat there, as he got up, while he was walking from one place to another.

Andrei was sure the old man was to disappear in front of his eyes, yet he did not. He did not disappear at all.

Ayakkabıcılar Kooperatifi, içerisinde kıyafet, ayakkabı ve daha birçok başka boş dükkanın bulunduğu uzun ve eski bir yapıydı. Orayı idame ettirenler yaşlı bir adam ve oğluydu sadece. Orada ne yapıyorlardı, işleri neydi, onları o terk edilmiş, metruk yapıda tutan şey neydi, tüm bunlar belirsiz meselelerdi.

Andrei için açık olan tek mesele, bu yapının kesin olarak insanların kayboluşu yaşadığı bir yer olduğuydu ve sırada bu iki adam olabilirdi.

Ayakkabicilar Cooperative was a tall and old building filled with empty stores of clothing, shoes and so on. An old man and his son were the only people who were maintaining there. What they were doing there, what their job was, what kept them in that deserted place, were unclear matters. The only clear matter for Andrei was that this building was, for sure, a place where many people had disappeared and these two men might be the next ones.

Andrei uzun bir süre onları izledi, takip etti. Yaşlı adam pek hareketli değildi, çoğu zaman kullanışsız ıvır zıvırlarla dolu odasında oturur ve televizyon izlerdi. Daha enerjik ve asabi olan oğlu ise sürekli bir hareket içerisindeydi.

Oğul periyodik olarak kooperatife geri döner ve çoğu zaman Arap Hanı’nı kuşbakışı seyre sunan terasa çıkan merdivenleri tırmanırdı. Andrei watched and followed them for a long time. The old man did not move often, he would sit in his room full of useless objects and watch TV most of the time. His son, a more energetic and ill-tempered man, was in constant motion. He went from one place to another, talked to everyone he came across with, saying things that do not mean much and following him in the isolated areas and also crowded streets was a hard mission. However, Andrei knew if he wanted to see someone disappear with his own eyes, he had to follow him without regarding how hard it was to do so. The son would periodically return to the cooperative and he would often take the stairs to the terrace where a top view of the Arap Han could be seen. Andrei would try so hard to take the steps as quick as the man because the disappearance might even happen on the stairs. However, no matter how hard Andrei tried, no matter how patient he was, neither the old man nor his son disappeared.

ÇÖP ALANI Andrei bir çöp yığınına rastladı ve yığının buradan alınıp nereye götürüleceğini merak etti. Uzunca bir süre, kedilerin yiyecek bir şeyler bulmak üzere gelişi dışında tuhaf denebilecek hiçbir şey olmadı.

Olur da dışarı çıkarsa onu gözden kaçırmamak için pürdikkat izliyordu. Bir süre sonra kapı tekrar açıldı ve çöpçü adam sokağa çıktı. Andrei buraya her gün geri geldi ve kapıdan çıkan çöp toplayıcılarını seyretti. Onlardan bir sürü vardı ve Andrei boş yere ortadan kaybolmalarını bekliyordu.

GARBAGE PLACE Andrei observed a heap of rubbish, and wondered, where it would be taken from here. Nothing peculiar happened for quite a while, apart of cats appearing, in search for something to eat.

Suddenly a short man came towing an empty trolley. He packed up the white bags full of rubbish and left immediately. The man with the garbage trolley moved with large steps and it was hard for Andrei to keep up. Andrei followed his footsteps that led him to an old, burned-out factory building.

The garbage man disappeared at the entrance gate. Andrei stayed outside staring at the gate. He watched carefully, not to miss if he comes out. After quite a while the gate opened again, and the garbage man stepped out to the street. Andrei came back to this place each day and he was watching the garbage collectors. There were many of them, and Andrei was waiting in vain for them to disappear.

Andrei bir merdivenden indi ve kendisini geniş bir avluda buldu. Bu yer farklı hissettiriyordu. Diğer yerler gibi gürültülü ve kalabalık değildi. Her iki tarafta da kafeler ve restoranlar vardı. İnsanlar tembel bir edayla sohbet ederken kediler de ağaçların arasında koşturuyordu. Andrei özellikle ilgisini çekmiş olan köşedeki beyaz duvarlı dükkana bakıyordu. Orada ne sattıklarını anlayamamıştı. Bir grup turist fotoğraf çekmeye gelmişti, neyin fotoğrafını çekmeye geldikleri konusunda bir fikri yoktu. Andrei’ye yollarını kaybetmiş gibi görünüyorlardı sadece. Garip yaşlı bir adam kadrajlarına girdi ve kameraya el salladı. Adam cebinden bir fotoğraf bile çıkarmıştı ve fotoğrafı turistlere gösterdi, sonra da hanın çıkışına doğru aceleyle yürüyüp ana caddeye çıktı.

Andrei went down some stairs and found himself in a large courtyard. This place felt different. It wasn’t as loud and busy as the others. There were café-s and restaurants on both sides. Cats were running up on the side of the trees while people were talking with a lazy attitude. Andrei watched the shop with white walls on the corner that seemed particularly strange. What did they sell there he couldn’t figure. A group of tourists came in taking pictures, of what exactly he did not know. They seemed just as lost as Andrei. A peculiar old man walked into the frame of their camera and waved into it. The old guy even pulled a photograph out of his jacket and showed it to tourists, and then rushed out of the han to the main street. Andrei got up and started to follow the man, but he lost track of him in the dense streets soon afterwards.

For some reason he knew that the old man will come back. So every day he went back to the same place at the same time. The peculiar old man also came back every day. He showed his photograph to anyone who seemed interested and then left in a hurry. Andrei tried to follow him each day but then lost track of him within minutes. The old man came back each day and then disappeared. But not in the way Andrei wanted him to.

BACK STREET

Andrei ne yapacağını bilmez haldeydi. İnsanların hiçbir iz bırakmadan kaybolduğu bu şehirde, ortadan kaybolacak kimseyi bulamıyordu. Andrei didn’t know what to do. In the city where people disappear without a trace, he couldn’t find anyone who would disappear. Since he couldn’t follow each and every resident of the city at the same time, he thought there was no point in simple observation; he had to understand the deeper, essential meaning of the mystery.

Kayboluşlarla ilgili bin çeşit hikaye dinlemiş gibi geliyordu. Kalabalık limanlarda, rüzgarlı dağ geçitlerinde, tren istasyonlarının boş bekleme odalarında ortadan kaybolan insanların hikayelerini anlatıyorlardı. Andrei tüm bu hikayeleri dinlemiş olduğu yerlerle ilgili canlı anılara sahipti. Bu hikayelerin anlatıcılarının binbir çeşit yüzü aklında canlanıyordu ama hikayelerin kendisi ve kayboluşların koşulları bulanıktı.

It seemed to him that he’d heard thousand different stories of the disappearances. They told stories of the city of disappearing people in busy harbors, windy mountain passes and empty waiting rooms of train stations.

Andrei had vivid memories of the different places where he’d heard these stories. He could recall the thousand faces of storytellers but the stories themselves and the circumstances of the disappearances seemed blurred.

Since these stories led him to the city, after for years he tried — and with great success we have to admit — to disappear from his own life, from the life where he was not Andrei, but somebody else, however he could not recall who exactly, so since these stories, which he couldn’t recall exactly either, led him here to this city, Andrei decided that he needed new stories to find out, or at least to understand where the people disappear to.

Andrei zihni sorularla dolup taşar halde yürüyordu. Kazara birinin ayağına bastı. Özür dilemek için başını çevirdiğinde gözlerini faltaşı gibi açmış kendisine bakmakta olan bir adamla karşılaştı. Adam bir an olsun kırpmıyordu gözlerini. Belki de bilerek durmuştu orada, Andrei’nin onun ayağına basmasını beklemişti. Andrei böyle düşünmüştü.

Orayı maviye boyarlarken ben buradaydım. Balıkçı restoranıydı eskiden. Ben oldum olası bir şeylerin kaybolup gidişiyle ilgilendim. Ama o zaman, kendime sormaya başladım, acaba bunun yerine balıklarla mı ilgilensem, diye.

someone’s shoe. As Andrei turned his head to apologize he saw a man with eyes wide open, looking directly at him. The man didn’t even blink. Maybe he stood there intentionally, waiting for him to step on his shoes – thought Andrei. ‘‘Time is an illusion that makes people make sense.’’ said the man. ‘‘Look at this facade. No, not like that. Look at it through time, okay?! People leave traces on this facade, they paint it, and then they disappear. I was here while they were painting it blue. It was a fish restaurant back then. I was always interested in the disappearing of things. But back then I started to ask myself if I should be interested in fishes instead. Later on I came back. You know what happened? Yeah... exactly. Pink happened. There were no more fishes.

They’ve disappeared. Now I don’t even know anymore which color to follow nor the thing what it represents. I know what you want. You want to disappear, don’t you? I say pick a nice color and paint this wall over again.’’

Kula iş Hanı Kandemir – 921. Sokaktaki eski bir evin giriş kapısının üzerindeki levhada yazan buydu. Bu bölgedeki terk edilmiş birçok evden biri. Böylesine kalabalık bir alanda bu kadar çok evin boş kalmasının sebebi ne? İnsanların yaşayacak bir yerlere ihtiyacı var ama yine de evler bütünüyle bomboş bırakılıyor, diye düşünürken Andrei, tam arkasında bir ayakkabıcının penceresi açıldı.

“Kemeraltı’nda eski bir gelenek vardır,” diye söze başladı ayakkabıcı, Andrei’nin düşüncelerini okumuşçasına. “Eğer bir dükkan sahibi kayboluşunun ardından bir ay içerisinde geri dönmezse komşuları dükkanını devralabilir ve depo olarak kullanabilir. Bu depolardan buralarda çok var.”

“Peki koskoca bir ev terk edilirse ne oluyor?” diye sordu Andrei heyecanla.

Bir şeyler bilen biriyle konuşabiliyor olduğu için mutluydu.

house in street 921. One of the many abandoned houses in the area. - Why so many houses remain empty in such a dense area? People are in urgent need for space, and yet complete houses are vacant. As Andrei was wondering, the window of the shoemaker’s workshop opened right behind him. ‘‘There is an old habit in Kemeralti - the shoemaker started as if he’d heard Andrei’s thoughts.’’ If a shopkeeper disappears, and doesn’t return for more than a month, the neighbors can to take over his place, and use it as storage.

There are many of these storages around here. ‘‘And what if a complete house becomes abandoned?’’ Andrei asked with excitement. He was happy to talk to someone, who seemed to understand a thing.

But somebody already started to keep different types of birds in there, and visits to feed them from time to time. I don’t know what to do. I hope the man disappears soon. But I see him every day. BUILDING WITH IVY

Andrei durdu ve solmakta olan bir sarmaşıkla kaplı binaya baktı. Kafasının içerisinde tedirgin düşünceler uçuşmaktaydı. Genç bir adam ona doğru yaklaştı. İyi görünümlüydü fakat Andrei adamın ölümüne yorgun bir halde olduğundan emindi. “Ne istediğini biliyorum,” diye başladı adam söze. “O eve bakışından anladım bunu. Neden kaybolmak istediğini bilmiyorum ama şunu söyleyebilirim ki bunu arayıp durmak fayda etmez.’’

Andrei stopped and stared at the building covered with fading ivy. He had nervous thoughts flying in his head. A young man approached him. He was good-looking, but Andrei was sure that the man was tired to his limits. ‘‘I know what you want.’’ he started. ‘‘I know from the way you look at that house. I don’t know why you want to disappear but I can tell, searching for it does not help.’’

“Ne demek istiyorsun?” diye sordu Andrei.

“Aklında tutman gereken iki şey var. İlki şu, kayboluş zamanı geldiğinde sana gelecek. İkincisi ise, kayboluşu arzulamanın seni hayal kırıklığın uğratabileceği.”

“Tüm bunları bana neden anlatıyorsun?” diye sordu Andrei tek kaşı yukarı kalkmış halde.

“Yalnızca yardımı dokunabilecek birkaç tavsiyede bulunuyorum sana. İster kabul et, ister etme, tıpkı kayboluş söz konusu olduğunda yapman gerektiği gibi. İyi şanslar!” dedi Andrei’ye ve oradan uzaklaştı.

‘‘What do you mean?’’ asked Andrei. ‘‘There are two things you need to keep in mind. First, disappearance will come to you when it is time. Second, desiring disappearance might lead you to disappointment.’’ ‘‘Why are you telling me all of this? - Andrei asked while raising his eyebrow.’’ ‘‘I am just giving you some helpful advices. Take it or leave it just like you should do with disappearing. Good luck!’’ he told Andrei, and walked away.

Andrei knew about a knife sharpener who was known around as the most experienced when it comes to the disappearing of people. When Andrei found the knife sharpener’s place he saw an old man who seemed at first distant and reluctant to speak, however, when Andrei asked a couple of questions, the man calmly answered.

olduğunda buralarda en deneyimli olan kişi bu adamdı. Andrei adamın yerini bulduğunda karşısına çıkan yaşlı adam başlangıçta mesafeli ve çekimser görünmüştü, fakat Andrei birkaç soru sorduğunda adam sakince cevap verdi.

Dudaklarından dışarı süzülen dumanın havaya karışmasını seyrederken birkaç saniye boyunca bekledi. “Şu duman gibi yok oluyorlar. Bazen yavaşça, bazen bir anda, ama sonunda kayboluyorlar. Neden kayboluyorlar? Nereye kayboluyorlar? Bilmiyorum. Hiçbirimiz bilmiyoruz. ‘‘I’ve been working here for forty years. Many people have walked in here.

Many people have come here, to me, to hire my services. I’ve seen so many faces. I’ve worked for numerous people and almost none of them came back to see what I have achieved with my craft. Why did they not come back? It is simple. They couldn’t, even if they wanted to. They disappeared. Mostly right before they walk out of this yard, in front of my eyes, and sometimes just a little while after that. They vanish… - He lit his cigarette and puffed it out. He waited for a few seconds as he watched the smoke coming out of his mouth vanishing into thin air. - Like the fume they disappear. Sometimes slowly, sometimes all of a sudden, but in the end they disappear. Why do they disappear? Where do they go? I don’t know. We don’t know. We just know one thing and that is the fact that they are gone now; women, men, children, the young ones and the old ones; all gone.

Andrei, dönüp dolaşıp kendisini bir hiçliğin tam ortasında bulduğu gerçeği dışında hiçbir şey düşünemez olmuştu. Bu hikayeler onu bu sözde gizemi çözmeye zerre kadar yaklaştırmadıkları gibi, bir de üstüne daha da kafasını karıştırmaktan başka işe yaramıyorlardı. Bir tutarlılık bulamıyordu. Kayboluşun kesin bir konumu yok gibiydi, kesin bir zamanı, frekansı, tetikleyicisi ve hatta kesin bir göstergesi bile yoktu. Kaybolan insanlar yaşlı da olabilirdi genç de, mutlu da olabilirlerdi çaresiz de… Fark etmiyordu. Kaybolan insanlar, büsbütün ve açıklanamayacak şekilde ortadan kayboluyorlardı.

Andrei couldn’t think of anything else but the fact that he’d ended up nowhere. Not only these stories did not lead him closer to solving the socalled mystery, but they even confused him. He couldn’t find any coherence. It seemed that the disappearance had no certain location, nor time, frequency, trigger or not even any certain indication. The people who disappear can be old, young, happy, desperate ... doesn’t matter. The people who disappear, disappear completely and inexplicably.

Andrei was not only disappointed by this uncertainty because he got further and further away from solving the mystery but because he got further away from his secret desire which was maybe unknown and unacknowledged even by him, the desire to experience the disappearance fully. Because after long years of experiments and certain success in the art of disappearance Andrei, or the person who timidly called himself Andrei to be more precise, wanted one thing and one thing only. To completely and at least for himself in an explicable sort of way irrevocably disappear forever. Because this is what Andrei really wanted after all, even though it took a long time for him to admit this to me.

Bana baktığında Andrei’nin yüzü aydınlandı. Gözlerimin içine derinlikle baktı ve ben daha tek kelime edemeden konuşmaya başladı. Bana kayboluştan, konuştuğu insanlardan, kendinden ve geldiği uzun yoldan bahsetti. Onu takip etmenin her zaman kolay olmadığını söylemeliyim ama hikayeleri insanı içine alıyordu. Onu uzun süre dinledim ve şu ana kadar kimsenin kaybolduğunu duymamış olmama rağmen söylediği hiçbir kelimenin gerçekliğinden şüphem yoktu.

Ben daha ne olduğunu anlamadan Andrei benim izinimi almaksızın ve geri dönüşü olmaz bir şekilde bana katıldı ki benim de ona karşı koymaya niyetim yoktu. Bundan böyle beraberdik, Andrei ve ben. When Andrei looked at me, his face brightened up. He looked deep in my eyes and before I could say a word he started to talk. He told me about the disappearance, the people he talked to, about himself and the long way he’d taken. I must say that it was not always easy to follow him, but his stories were gripping. I’ve listened to him for a long time, and even though I’ve never heard of anyone disappearing before, I had no doubt about any word of his.

Andrei’s memories were jumbled, he didn’t know anymore what when and where have happened to him so he told everything as it was happing to him in that exact moment. He had different stories of different places. These stories didn’t occur in the past, it was more like they were happening to us in a different reality and at the same time while these things happened to us here and now, I knew, or I felt to be more precise, that the two of us were not there, and we were not in that time.

Before I could realize it, Andrei joined me irrevocably even though he didn’t ask my permission, and I had no urge to resist. We were together after this, Andrei and I. First, we took a step, and then another one. Maybe we didn’t even stop anymore. Night fell then came the break of dawn and we were just walking on the streets. Sometimes he fell silent. Other times he couldn’t stop talking. I just listened most of the time, and rarely when I had a question he already answered it before it could even take a form of a sentence. It seemed like he knew what I was thinking about, or to be more precise, it felt like these were his thoughts hiding in my head.

MAD BABA Andrei stopped in front of a house locked in a cage and seemingly falling apart. ‘‘There is an old man, who lives here’’ Andrei told me. ‘‘Everybody knows him around here and he knows more than anyone around here. You can’t understand what he says no matter how hard you try. But in fact he tells great stories. These stories make no sense but that’s not the point. The point is to tell the stories, not to understand them. I believe there is a great truth behind them. Maybe these are stories of the disappearing people. Maybe they are not. It doesn’t matter really. What matters is that we are going to disappear you and me. That I’m certain of.’’

MAĞARALAR “Bu şehirde insanlar tamamen kayboluyor, ayrıca binalar da,” dedi Andrei. Boş bir alanın önünde durduk. CAVES ‘‘In this city people disappear completely, but so do buildings.’’ said Andrei.

We stopped in front of an empty lot. Ruins of a building hang on the steep wall, like caves of some sort. ‘‘The only difference is that buildings disappear more slowly.’’ Andrei continued. ‘‘You can say it is just a natural slow decay, but if you watch more carefully you can see the actual matter, the bonding, bricks, the pipes disappear with your own eyes.’’

HAMAM Andrei ve ben, bir süredir hamamın önünde sessizce duruyorduk. Arada bir, birileri bize çok da dikkat etmeden hamamın içine giriyordu. Neyi beklediğimizi bilmiyordum.

“Buraya sık gelirim,” dedi Andrei, aniden. “Ama binaya giren insanlar her zaman geri çıkmıyor. Kayboluşun herhangi bir belirtisi yok. Biri içeri girer, soyunur, sıcak suyun tadını çıkarır ve etraf tuhaf bir titreşimle dolar. Şu anda olduğu gibi… Hissedebiliyor musun?”

“Evet,” dedim ve gerçekten de sırtımda soğuk bir titreme hissediyordum. “Şimdi kayboldular,” dedi.

“Nereden biliyorsun?” diye sordum.

Andrei, tek kelime etmeden binanın içine girdi. Onu takip ettim. İçeri girdiğimizde kimseyi bulamadık. Bir sigara, külükte yanmaya devam ediyordu.

Andrei, sigarayı söndürdü ve sanki garip bir şey olmamış gibi dışarı çıktı.

HAMAM We were standing in front of the hamam in complete silence for quite some time Andrei and I. Once in while someone went into the hamam without paying to much attention to us. I didn’t know what we were waiting for. ‘‘I come here frequently’’, Andrei said suddenly. ‘‘But the people who enter the building don’t always come back out. The disappearance has no indication. Someone goes in there, undresses, enjoys the hot water and then the air is getting filled with a strange resonance, just like now, can you feel it?’’ ‘‘Yes.’’ I said, and indeed I did start to feel some cold vibration on my back. ‘‘Now, they disappear.’’ ‘‘How do you know?’’ I asked.

Andrei didn’t say a word; he just went straight into the building. I followed him. Once we were inside we couldn’t find anyone. A cigarette was smoking in an ashtray. Andrei put it out and as if nothing peculiar has happened he walked out of the building.

OTOPARK MEYDANI Artık, Andrei’nin tutunabilecek bir kimsesi olduğu için, kaybolmak istediği kente benimle birlikte gerçek anlamda daha yeni varmış sayılırdı. Lakin daha belirgin olmak gerekirse, tam tersinin gerçekleştiğini söylemeliyim. Bu şehirde senelerdir yaşayan ben; Andrei ile beraber, şehrime nihayet varmıştım. İnsanların herhangi bir iz bırakmadan kayboldukları şehre. Ve artık ben de Andrei’nin istediği şeyi istiyordum… Tamamen kaybolmayı.

OTOPARK SQUARE Now, that Andrei had somebody to hang on to, he essentially just arrived to the city with me where he wanted to disappear from. But if we want to be more precise, we have to say that it happened the opposite way. I, who lived in the city for years, I arrived with Andrei to my city finally. To the city where people disappear without a trace. And now I wanted exactly the same thing as Andrei... to disappear completely.

Bu kentte ortadan kaybolan insanlar da aynı şekilde kentin dokusu içerisinde gizleniyorlar. Artık orada olmamalarının bir önemi yoktu, hikayeleri sayesinde özleri de bir şekilde geride kalıyordu. Onlara hayalet denemezdi. Masadan kupaları, tabakları ya da kahve fincanlarını devirmiyorlar, gecenin bir vakti kapıların gıcırdamasına sebep olmuyorlardı. Hiçbir yerde değillerdi ve onları tek hatırlayanlar onları bir zamanlar tanıyanlardı. Onlar birer hikaye olmuşlardı ve bu sebeple gerçekliğe olan bağları çok zayıftı ve bu bağlar bile iç içe geçmiş zamanlar ve mekanların içerisinde kaybolmuşlardı, bütün bunlara rağmen gerçekliğin içerisinde bir yerlerde var olmaya devam ediyorlardı.

Andrei yavaşça daha da uzaklaşıyordu bu gerçeklikten. Kimsenin onu tanımadığı bu şehirde kaybolup gitmiş insanlardan bile daha az iz bırakıyordu aslında. Bir bakıma kaybolmuş sayılırdı ama aynı zamanda oradaymış, varmış gibi hissediyordu ve bu yüzden de kaybolmuş olamazdı. Onu bulduğumda içerisinde bulunduğu durum böyleydi. Andrei orada, sokağın sonundaydı, belki de eskiden bir ev olan bir terasın koridoruna doğru eğilmişti, beni beklemekte olduğuna emindim.

The same way did the people who disappeared hide in the tissue of the city.

It doesn’t matter that they were not there anymore, through their stories their essential meaning did stay. They were not ghosts. They didn’t push mugs, plates or coffee cups off the table, nor did they make doors creak in the middle of the night. They were nowhere and only those remembered them who’ve known them. They were stories, and by being stories they had very little connection to reality, even these connections were lost in the tangle of different times and spaces, nevertheless they did exist in reality.

Andrei slowly got more and more further away from this reality. In the city where nobody knew him, he had even less traces then the ones who in fact disappeared. He did disappear in a way, but at the same time he felt that he was here, and he is present so after all he couldn’t have disappeared. This was the state I found him in. Andrei was up there at the end of the street, leaning to a corridor of terrace which used to be a house maybe, I was sure he was waiting for me.

“Biliyorsun, insanlar genelde diğer insanların kaybolduklarını görmüyorlar,” dedi Andrei. “Birinin artık orada olmadığını fark ediyorlar ama tam kayboldukları anı hatırlamıyorlar. Umursamıyorlarmış gibi görünüyor.”

Sokakta yürürken Andrei bir anda gözlük satan bir dükkana girdi. Oturmakta olan gözlükçüye selam verdi ve devam etti.

“Biri öğle yemeğinden sonra kahve içmeye gidip dönmediğinde ya da sabah yatağında bulunamadığında şaşırmıyorlar bile. Bazen iki durak arasında bir tramvay kayboluyor ve sadece tramvay zamanında gelmediğinde bunu fark ediyorlar.”

Andrei bir gözlük denerken gözlükçü de bizi izliyordu. Arkamdaki adamın varlığını hissetsem de ona pek dikkat ettiğim söylenemezdi.

“Büyüleyici bulduğum şey ise bir anda oluvermesi,” diye devam etti konuşmaya Andrei. “Bir hile, sihir veya mucize yok. Öylece oluyor, görmüyorsun bile.”

Arkamı döndüm, gözlükçü artık orada değildi.

‘‘You know, people usually don’t see the people disappearing.’’ Andrei told me. ‘‘They can tell that someone is not there anymore, but the exact moment of the disappearance is not something that they remember here. It seems they don’t care about it.’’

As we were walking down the street Andrei suddenly went into a shop that sells glasses. He waved to the optician sitting there and continued. ‘‘They don’t even raise an eyebrow when someone doesn’t come back after drinking a coffee after lunch or when someone is missing from the bed in the morning. Sometimes even a whole tram disappears between two stops but they only realize it when the tram doesn’t come in time.’’

The optician was watching us as Andrei put on some glasses. I felt his presence but didn’t pay to much attention to the man behind me. ‘‘What I find mesmerizing is that it happens in a moment, ‘‘Andrei continued, ‘‘there is no smoke, no magic or miracle. It just happens, and you don’t even see it.

I looked behind my back and the optician wasn’t there anymore. ‘‘You see’’ said Andrei while he put the glasses back, ‘‘You don’t see.’’

ÇIKMAZ SOKAK

DEAD END STREET

Andrei sokaktan aşağı yürüyordu, bense onu kafamda bir sürü soru ile takip ediyordum. Sonunda köşede durduğumuzda bana döndü ve “Hiçbir şey bilmi- yorum,” dedi.

Andrei was walking down the street, I followed him with a head full of questions. Then on the corner he finally stopped and turned to me - I know nothing, - he said.

“İtiraf etmesi zor ama bunun nasıl ve neden olduğu hakkında fikrim yok. Bazı önsezilerim var fakat o kadar mantıksızlar ki onlardan kelimeler oluşturmak oldukça zor, ayrıca bunu yaptığım takdirde esas anlamlarını da kaybedecekler.

Bunun ne olduğunu kelimeler olmaksızın hissediyorum. Kayboluş kontrol edilebilmenin ötesinde. Sorgulanamaz… Ve belki de çözülemez. Bu olanların ardında bir şeyler olması gerek. Sana göstereceğim!”

‘‘It’s hard to admit, but I have no idea why or how this happens. I have some hunches, but those are so fantastic that it would be hard to form words out of them, and by doing so they would lose their essential meaning. I feel without words what this is all about. Disappearance is beyond control.

Unquestionable... and maybe even unsolvable. There has to be something behind all this. I’ll show you!’’

Genç bir kadın yanımızdan geçti ve çıkmaz sokağa doğru gitmeye başladı.

Andrei onu takip etmeye başladı.

A young girl passed us and turned to the dead end street. Andrei started to follow her.

Andrei çıkmaz sokağa doğru yürüyordu ama onun adımlarını takip ederken bir düşünce beni durdurdu. Acıma mıydı yoksa merak mıydı bilmiyorum. Belki de kaybolanın ben olacağım korkusu. Andrei was walking into the dead end street but as I was following his footsteps a thought stopped me. If it was pity or curiosity, I do not know. Fear, maybe, that it will be me. Suddenly the world, the city seemed to disappear and I could only see darkness around me. Andrei shook my shoulder. ‘‘Now she’s gone.’’ Indeed the girl was nowhere to be found. We reached the end of the street. Andrei was looking at me with a strange notion in his eyes and then turned around.

OPERA

Andrei aniden sola döndü ve bir pasaja girdi. Dükkanları geçti ve öbür tarafa gitti. Sağ tarafta kocaman aynalar vardı. Aynaların önünde durdu, bir süre yansımasını izledi ve ardından konuşmaya başladı.

“Bir gün kaybolacağım,” dedi. “Ondan sonra ben de bileceğim sen de. O zamana kadar beklemekten başka yapacak bir şeyimiz yok. Hatırlayamıyorum ama belki bunu daha önce söylemişimdir. İnsanlar burada da kayboluyorlar.

Bir süreliğine buranın özel olduğunu düşünmüştüm. Sonra başka yerlerin özel olduğunu düşündüm. Halbuki kaybolmanın bir sistemi, bir örgüsü yok. Şans ve kader kavramları üzerinden düşünürsek, ikisi arasında bir yerlerde olabilir. Ölümden kaçamayacağın gibi ondan da kaçamazsın. Fakat beni yanlış anlama, ölüme karşı bir ilgim yok. Beni meraklandıran şey, kayboluşun açıklanamaz olması. İtiraf etmeliyim ki çoktan kaybolmuş olma ihtimalim var. Bana öyle bakma. Senin de artık burada, benimle birlikte olmama ihtimalin var. Burada mısın? Bence hayır. Başka bir yerdesin. Başka bir şey istiyorsun ya da benim istediğimin aynısını istiyorsun. Neyse, bu zaten hiçbir fark yaratmıyor.”

Nihayet şüphelerimi dışa vurduğum sırada “İzmir Opera ve Balesi”nin önünde duruyorduk.

OPERA

Andrei suddenly turned left and entered a passage. He walked past the shops and went directly to the other end. There were huge mirrors on the right. He stopped in front of them and watched his reflection for a while. ‘‘I’ll disappear one day, - he said. - Then I’ll know, and you’ll know as well.

Until then there is not much to do, but to wait. Maybe I said this already. I can’t remember. People disappear here too. For a while I thought that this place was special. Then I thought other places were special. There is no pattern in disappearance though. In the frame of fortuitousness and fatality however it has to be somewhere in the middle. You can’t escape it, it’s like death. Yes, but don’t get me wrong, I have no interest in that sort of thing.

What interests me is the inexplicability of the disappearance. While I have to admit, that it is possible that I have already disappeared. Don’t look at me like that. It is also possible that you are not here with me anymore, are you though? No, I don’t think so. You are somewhere else. You want something else, or maybe exactly the same thing as I want. That makes no difference anyway.’’

We stopped in front of İzmir Opera, when I finally expressed my doubts. ‘‘Do you really believe all these stories you’ve told me? ‘‘Believe? - He said with a bizarre look on his face. ‘‘Don’t try to fool me - I said in a serious tone.

“Bana anlattığın bütün o hikayelere inanıyor musun?” “İnanmak mı?” dedi, suratında tuhaf bir ifadeyle.

“Benimle oyun oynama,” diye karşılık verdim ciddi bir tonda.

Saatine baktı ve “Opera biteli on dakika oldu, farkındasın değil mi?” dedi.

“Ne olmuş yani?” diye karşılık verdim. Girişe doğru yürümeye başladı ve onu takip etmemi istedi. İçeride sadece beş kişi vardı.

“Tuhaf değil mi?” dedi Andrei; ve bir parmak şıklatması gibi o beş kişi gözlerimizin önünde birden kayboldu.

He checked his watch and then said ‘‘You know, it has been ten minutes since the show in the Opera is over.’’ ‘‘So what?’’ He walked towards the entrance and asked me to follow. There were only five people standing inside. ‘‘Strange isn’t it?’’ Andrei said. And just like a snap of a finger those five people disappeared in front of our eyes.

Pasaja bizden sonra girmiş bir kadını izliyordum. Ağır ağır yürüyor ve kıyafetlere bakıyordu. Durduğu anda kesin bir şekilde kaybolacağından emin oldum. Çantasını yere koydu, ceketini de çantasının üstüne. Bir ceket seçti ve yavaşça üstüne giymeye başladı. Kullanabileceği bir ayna veya yansıma yapan herhangi bir yüzey var mı diye etrafa bakındı ama gördüğü tek şey benim bakışlarımdı. Tam bu sırada ise kayboldu. Bakışının sıcaklığını hala hissedebiliyordum ama tek görebildiğim çantasının üstündeki ceketi ve bize dik dik, boş gözlerle bakan cansız mankenlerdi. Kalabalığın içinde Andrei’yi bulmaya çalıştım ama onu hiçbir yerde göremiyordum.

Andrei, bana ne kadar çok hikaye anlatırsa benden o kadar uzaklaşıyordu.

Onda bir şeyler değişmişti ve bunu hissetmeme rağmen buna karşı hiçbir şey yapmadım. İlk başlarda daha sık sessizleşmeye başladı, ardından da zaman zaman geride kalmaya başladı. Hatta onu göremediğim zamanlar oldu. Belki de kayboluşa olan ilgimin ona olan ilgimden daha fazla olduğunu hissetmişti.

Tüm bu olanlarda derin bir gerçeklik sezmiş olmalı. Çünkü Andrei beni terk etmişti. Pasajın içinden yürürken kendimi bir anda yalnız buluvermiştim.

I was watching a woman who just came in to the passage after us. She was looking at the clothes slowly walking by. Once she stopped I felt certain that she’s going to disappear. She put her bag down and on top of her bag she placed her jacket. She picked one coat, and slowly started to put it on. She was looking around to see a mirror or a reflecting surface of some sort, but she only caught my glance. In the same moment she just disappeared. I’ve still felt the heat of her glance, but the only thing I could see now was her jacket on top of her bag and a bunch of lifeless mannequins staring at us with empty eyes. I tried to find Andrei in the crowd, but I couldn’t see him anywhere.

The more stories Andrei told me, the more he became distant to me.

Something had changed in him, even though I felt it, I‘ve done nothing against it. First, he fell silent more and more often, then he fell behind from time to time. It even happened that I’ve lost sight of him. Maybe he also felt that I’m more interested in the disappearance than in him He must have understood some deep truth from all this. Because Andrei left me. As we were walking thru the passage I’ve found myself alone.

KONAK PARKI

İlk düşüncem, bu şehirdeki bir çok insan gibi onun da kaybolduğuydu. Ancak bu düşünce çok bayağı geldiği için onu kabul etmeyi reddettim. Andrei kaybolmuş olamazdı. Buralarda bir yerlerde olmalıydı. İlgisini ve dertli nefes alıp verişini ensemde hissediyordum ama onu göremiyordum. Durdurulamaz bir hızla yürüyor ve kaldırım taşlarında ve binaların kirli duvarlarında bana “Andrei burada”, “Andrei burada yürüdü”, “Andrei seni burada bekliyor” diyebilecek en ufak ipucuna kadar her şeyi arayıp durdum. Fakat Andrei hiçbir yerde değildi. Buna rağmen durmamaya kararlıydım. Adımlarımın temposunu değiştirmedim çünkü biliyordum ki bu şehrin bir yerinde Andrei çoktan biliyor, Andrei çoktan anlıyor ve Andrei hikayeyisini bitirmemi bekliyor.

Yalnız kalmıştım, kayboluş ya da Andrei hakkında en ufak bir fikri olmayan insanlarla çevrelenmiş vaziyetteydim. Hayatımda hiç hissetmediğim kadar yalnız hissediyordum. En acı tarafı ise Andrei’nin yokluğu değil sessizlikti. O gergin sessizlik, o titrek sessizlik, o gizli sessizlik, o dolu ve boş yalnızlık şehrin her yerinde uzanıyordu. İlerlemeye devam ettim çünkü bu sessizliğin kaynağı Andrei’ydi ve beni bir yerde bekliyordu.

My first thought was that he’d disappeared like many in this city. This thought however felt so banal that I‘ve resisted its acceptance. Andrei couldn’t have disappeared. Andrei had to be here somewhere. I felt his attention, his troubled breath on my neck, but I couldn’t see him. I walked around with an unstoppable pace and searched for the tiniest trace, which could tell me from the stones of the pavement, the dirty walls of the buildings that Andrei is here, Andrei walked here, Andrei is waiting for you here. But Andrei was nowhere. I wouldn’t stop though. The rhythm of my steps did not change because I knew that somewhere in this city, Andrei already knows, Andrei already understands, and Andrei is waiting for me to end his story.

I was left alone, I was surrounded with people who knew nothing about the disappearances, nor did they know about Andrei. I felt more alone than ever in my life. The most bitter part was not the absence of Andrei, but the silence.

That strained silence, that wavering silence, that secret silence, that filling and void silence which laid everywhere in the city. I kept going, because the source of this silence, Andrei, was waiting for me somewhere.

TRAMVAY Andrei, gerçekten de beni bekliyordu. Onu uzak bir mesafeden tanıyabildim.

Denizin kıyısında büyük bir kayanın üstünde oturuyordu. Ona en kısa sürede ulaşmak için yeşil parkın içinden yürüdüm. Benim yaklaşmamı katı bir sessizlik içinde izliyordu.

TRAM Andrei was waiting for me indeed. I could recognize him from a great distance; Andrei was sitting on a big rock next to the sea. I walked through the green park to get to him as soon as possible. He was watching me getting closer in full rigid silence.

SAHİLDEKİ KAYALAR Yanına oturduğumda kıpırdamadı. Nerede olduğunu veya beni neden bıraktığını sormadım. Her hâlükârda cevap vermeyeceğini biliyordum.

Uzun bir sessizlikten sonra aynı ilk seferki gibi Andrei bana döndü ve gözlerime dikkatlice baktı, ardından garip ve kuru sessiyle konuşmaya başladı.

Bu şehirde insanlar aynı vücudumdaki hücrelerin kaybolduğu gibi bir iz bırakmadan yok oluyorlar. Ben kayboluyorum ve yine de burada kalıyorum. Şehir de burada kalıyor ya da duruyor, hangisini tercih edersen. Neden?

Gerçeklik, tıpkı vücudun çözülüp ufalanması sırasında bir çeşit yapıştırıcının özü bir arada tuttuğu gibi bir arada tutuluyor ve böylece sonsuza kadar orada kalabiliyor. İnsanlar kaybolsa bile şehir tek olarak kalabiliyor - tabii, eğer şehir gerçekten varolmaktaysa… ki bununla alakalı şüphelerim de gitgide derinleşiyor ve güçleniyor.

Eğer şehir varoluyorsa bunun sebebi sana anlattığım hikayenin onu bir arada tutuyor olmasıdır. Mesela elimdeki hücreleri bir şeyin bir arada tutması veya başka bir şeyin yıldız yumaklarını galaksiler halinde tutması gibi.

Peki o şey nedir? Hikayelerden gerçeklik yaratanla aynı şey tabii ki. Anlatıcı veya anlatının kendisi. Bu yüzden kayboluşla alakalı bir hikaye anlattığında acayip bir labirente girersin. Kayboluş var olmamakla veya ölümle alakalı değil, o aslında var oluşun özü. Ancak bununla alakalı bir hikaye sana labirentte rehberlik etmez.

“Peki, insanlar nereye kayboluyor o zaman?” diye sordum. hikayesini bitirmiş gibi.

Gerçeklik hissi yok ve mutlak gerçek de yok çünkü gerçek dediğimiz de anlatıya ya da anlatıcının kendisine dayanıyor. Eğer daha da ileri gidersem söyleyebilirim ki gerçeklik diye bir şey yok, parallel gerçeklikler de yok, başka boyutlar da yok, hatta başka boyutlara geçitler de yok. Sadece hikayeler var. İnsanların bir şehirde kaybolduğuna dair hikayeler. Belki de kaybolmak da değil ama başka bir şeye uğruyor olmak. Kayboluyorum ya da kaybolmuyorum ama onun yerine tamamen başka bir şey oluyor. Ben artık Andrei bile değilim.

Ben kimseyim ama yine de var oluyorum ya da var olmuyorum. Bir hikayeyim sadece. Ve daha önce bir çok kişinin bu şehirde yaptığı gibi ben de bir iz bırakmadan yok oluyorum.” dedi Andrei. Derin bir nefes aldı ve havayı dışarı üfledi sanki hikayesini bitirmiş gibi.

Bir süreliğine hiçbir şey olmadı. Yan yana sessizlik içinde oturuyorduk.

Andrei’nin hatları ben onu izlerken hiçliğe karışmaya başladı. Tuhaf bir titreşim etrafımızı sardı. Benim hatlarım da yok olmaya başladı. Gözlerimi kapattım, etrafımda bir şeylerin değiştiğini hissediyordum. Bir süredir bekliyor ve ne olduğunu anlamaya çalışıyordum. Gözlerimi açtığımda Andrei orada değildi.

Kaybolmuştu. O kaybolurken etrafımızdaki şehir de kaybolmuştu. Ve şehir kaybolurken ben de tamamen kayboldum.

ROCKS ON THE BEACH

He didn’t move when I sat next to him. I didn’t ask where he had been, why he’d left me. I knew he wouldn’t reply anyway. Followed by a long silence Andrei turned to me and looked deep in my eyes, like the first time and then with his strange dry voice he started to speak.

In this city the people, in my body the cells keep disappearing without a trace. I disappear and yet still remain. The city remains here, or it stays here, if you prefer. Why? Reality, just as the body, gets parsed up, it crumbles and, in the meantime, a certain kind of cohesive force pulls and sticks the essence together so what I’m talking about can stay one and eternal. Even if people disappear from the city, the city remains one—if the city exists at all, which I grow to doubt deeply and ever more strongly.

Even if the city exists, it is only because the story that I’m telling you holds it together. In the case of my hand, for example, something holds the cells in it together to form a hand, and in the same way, something forges the tangle of stars into galaxies.

What is that thing you ask? The same thing that builds reality out of stories.

The narrator, or the narrative itself. So if you tell a story about disappearance you enter a peculiar labyrinth, the disappearance is not about absence or death, in fact it is the essence of existence. The story about this, however, does not guide you through the labyrinth. ‘‘Where do the people disappear to then?’’ I asked Andrei.

‘‘Reality is also just a story - he continued - a narrated story. It has no sense of truth, there is no one-truth either, since what we call true and why depends on the narration or the narrator himself I go even further, there is no reality, there are no parallel realities either, moreover, there are no dimensions, not even gates to other dimensions. There are only stories. Stories about people disappearing in a city. Or not disappearing but doing something else. I’m disappearing. Or I’m not disappearing, instead I’m doing something completely different. I’m not even Andrei anymore, I’m no one. Yet I still exist. Or I don’t really exist. I’m just a story. And as many have done in this city, now I disappear without a trace.’’ said Andrei. He took a deep breath and then slowly blew the air out, as if he had finished his story.

For a while nothing has happened. We were sitting next to each other in silence. I was watching Andrei as his contours slowly faded away into nothing.

A strange resonance filled the air. Even my contours started to fade away. I closed my eyes, I felt that something was changing around me. I was waiting for a while, trying to sense what was happening. When I opened my eyes Andrei was not there. He has disappeared. And as Andrei disappeared the city disappeared around us. And as the city disappeared, I also disappeared completely.
