o you recall how you felt the last time you cleaned out a junk drawer? Or how you felt when you donated old clothes to a thrift store, picked up trash, focused on gratitude, or walked in nature to clear your head? Feelings of relief, weightlessness, calm and perhaps contentedness often emerge from instances like these. There is a reason for this: In all cases, a sense of cleansing and simplifying took place.

Every year, more and more clutter seems to fill our lives physically, mentally and externally—social media and streaming services fill our time and minds with stimulation; giant online stores encourage us to impulsively buy more material items; pollution continues to clutter our environment. The average U.S. household alone is estimated to contain 300,000 items! Minimalism is being recognized as a satisfying solution to get rid of the things that don’t truly serve us or the world around us. The increased appreciation for minimalism has emerged in conjunction with the steadily increasing societal shift toward treating ourselves and the planet better. Both notions involve getting back to basics, toward what nature intended. As an example, in the quest to maintain health and prevent disease, natural and holistic health care are much more recognized and utilized in mainstream medicine than in previous years. This minimizes the need for extra medications, appointments, surgeries, insurance costs—the whole gamut. I think most of us can agree that we would prefer to visit the doctor less, and that we would rather have a fridge full of nourishing food than a cabinet chock-full of pills for most ailments that could be prevented with healthy food. When it comes to a healthy planet, moving from waste to minimalism helps keep nature protected. The less we waste, the less work has to be done to keep our world clean—and of course, clean air, land and water are essential to the survival of all life. Our October issue of Natural Awakenings Milwaukee magazine dives into the multifaceted notion of minimalism from three interwoven perspectives: minimalist simplicity as a means to decrease clutter and busyness, ecological simplicity which ties minimalism to sustainability, and conscious simplicity which acknowledges the benefits of minimizing at a deeper personal or spiritual level. Minimalism can look different for everyone. Perhaps you downgrade your thousands of belongings to a mere 100 things, as did Dave Bruno, author of The 100 Thing Challenge: How I Got Rid of Almost Everything, Remade My Life, and Regained My Soul. Or perhaps you get rid of one item a day, or you reduce mental clutter with daily meditation. All of this can foster a more fulfilling life. In this issue, we offer a plethora of tangible ideas to help you declutter your home, your mind, your schedule and the environment. When we get rid of the things that don’t matter very much, we end up with so much more of the things that do. In encouragement of a simplified life, Jordan Peschek, RN, Publisher

Plumeria Wellness Offers Ultimate TCM Weight Management Program

P

lumeria Acupuncture and Holistic Wellness Center, LLC, introduces a holistic, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ultimate weight-management program. Designed to find the root cause of excess weight, the program is an intensive, two-month, weight-management program that provides acupuncture and natural herbal medicine combined with a weight-management education from a TCM perspective. Patients will learn the root cause of excess weight and how to prevent it from rebounding. “The root cause of weight gain is totally different from person to person. For example, it might be caused by an unbalanced lifestyle or habits, inflammation of organs, or mental-emotional issues. We prescribe Chinese herbal formulas customized just for you,” explains Dr. Ayako Mizuno, acupuncturist and owner of Plumeria. “The most remarkable point of this program is that it treats patients’ overall health conditions holistically. Patients will not just lose weight, but also obtain healthier bodies and minds.” Location: 2500 N. Mayfair Rd., Ste. 410, Wauwatosa. riffin’s Grain-Free Goods, makers of the grain-free, gluten-free, plant-based Good Cookies, is launching a virtual Good Cookie Class to educate participants on how to make their cookies at home. The first class takes place at 4 p.m., October 17, and will feature the Good Cookies Chocolate Chip Maple flavor. Another class is to be determined. Participants will also have access to a private Facebook group to ask questions, share their creations and connect with others about grain-free diets. “People with irritable bowel syndrome or celiac disease have a harder time tolerating gluten, sugars and dairy and can get sick from cross-contamination very easily—especially since the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) allows 20 milligrams of gluten in products labeled gluten-free,” explains John Griffin, founder of Griffin’s Grain-Free Goods. “I realized the best benefit was to teach people how to make the cookies. It allows those who attend the ability to control their environment and make food with tools they can trust so they don’t have to worry.” Cost: $77. Less Stuff, More Joy Ways to Live Simpler and Lighter on Mother Earth

by Ronica O’Hara

W

hen holistic wellness coach and personal trainer Sergio Rojas saw his contract with a trucking company terminated by the pandemic, he and his wife Krista turned it into an opportunity to step away from a life of too much stuff and over-scheduled activities. “When life gets too complicated and there’s too much going on, you get stressed and irritated easier,” he says. “You don’t feel connected to yourself.” The couple sold their 4,200-square-foot house in Dubuque, Iowa, along with 85 percent of their belongings and spent eight months living out of suitcases exploring the southeastern United States and Latin America with their 14-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son. “We wanted our kids to see what it’s like to downsize, to live with less,” says Rojas. After considering Vancouver and Miami, they settled in the Atlanta area in a townhouse half the size of their Iowa home not far from extended family. “A simpler life lets you focus on what’s important,” he says. “We have deep, deep conversations with our kids, and dinner can be a two-and-a-half-hour experience, with a game of cards and singing songs.” Not everyone moves in such dramatic fashion toward a simpler lifestyle, but thanks in part to the lessons of COVID-19, intentionally living with less is gaining currency across the 12

country. “The pandemic gave us an uninvited sample of a more minimalist and simple life, and we have all become acutely aware of what feels good to let go of and what’s really important to us,” says minimalist blogger Ema Hidlebaugh, of MinimizeMyMess.com. According to research from the multinational consulting firm Accenture, the pandemic made consumers more mindful of purchases, more conscious of food waste and more interested in sustainable, local options. Other polls found that two out of three Americans adopted more eco-friendly habits during the pandemic, and that 52 percent are open now to living in a van. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for simpler living; each person crafts what best fits their values and needs. Three common strands have emerged: minimalist simplicity—living with less clutter and busyness; ecological simplicity—living with the sustainability of the planet as the priority; and conscious simplicity—driven by deep personal and spiritual values. The approaches can overlap, yet each has its unique flavor. None has an end stage: All are dynamic explorations and encourage continual experimentation and growth. With time, they often merge together. In an in-depth study published in the International Journal of Applied Positive Psychology, people living long-term minimalist lifestyles reported spend-

ing more time with family and friends, volunteering, engaging in pro-ecological behaviors, making sustainable and ethical purchases, and choosing to spend money on experiences rather than material objects. They described their mental space as a feeling of clear-headedness, spaciousness and lightness, and some said that stripping back to minimal possessions enabled them to strip back to their true identity. Moving toward simplicity often starts with a decision—sometimes thrust upon us—to reconsider how to spend our energy. “Whatever you own, owns you,” counselled pacifist, mystic and environmental activist Peace Pilgrim in the 1980s—a sobering thought, given that the average American household is estimated to hold 300,000 separate items, from T-shirts to coffee cups. As one woman told her, “I’ve just realized I’m working my fingers to the bone to provide a home for my furniture!”

Minimalist Simplicity Minimalism involves “owning less, practicing sufficiency and improving the quality of life by not indulging in consumerism,” says Aniruddha Pangarkar, assistant professor of marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, whose study on the topic appeared in the Journal of Business Research. “By practicing minimalism, consumers can achieve life-goals through experiencing well-being, satisfaction, happiness and peace.” A 2019 YouGov survey reported that 17 percent of Americans describe themselves as minimalists, 23 percent would like to become one and 31 percent have no interest in the idea. Historically, minimalism in America goes back to the Quakers and Henry David Thoreau’s writings, but it gained new life in 2014 with Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. She says holding each object and asking, “Does it spark joy?” If it doesn’t, thank it and toss it, she advises. After her Netflix series ran in 2019, thrift stores reported a dramatic upswing in donations. Because research suggests that clutter is linked to depression, fatigue and higher levels of stress, decluttering alone can be life-changing. Journalist Ellen Pober Rittberg, of Brooklyn, moved into a one-

room studio when she downsized from her house. “I could have chosen a onebedroom apartment, but it would have meant more places to put things that I probably didn’t need to acquire,” she says. Asking if something “sparks joy” can also be applied to everything from friendships to jobs to food and finances, whittling away what is not essential. As millennials are discovering, renting instead of owning a home frees up weekends for fun instead of home repairs. Using Lyft or Uber and mass transit saves money otherwise spent on car loans, repairs and gas. Spurning designer brands opens up funds for trips to Yellowstone or Iceland. “Even though everyone embraces minimalism differently, each path leads to the same place: a life with more time, more money and more freedom to live a more meaningful life,” advise Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus in their top-rated blog TheMinimalists.com, which has 20 million followers. “Getting started is as simple as asking yourself one question: How might your life be better if you owned fewer material possessions?”

Ecological Simplicity This green approach means “to choose ways of living that touch the Earth more lightly and that reduce our ecological impact on the web of life,” writes ecoactivist Duane Elgin in his seminal book Voluntary Simplicity. Half a century ago, the Whole Earth Catalog kicked off the movement with its Earth-centered living strategies. Today, thousands of websites and books offer step-by-step ecological advice, recycling has become commonplace, electric cars are the hottest sellers and according to the National Retail Federation, 70 percent of American consumers value sustainability in products. Lowering our impact on the planet means living more simply with less. Among other strategies, this means going without household plastics or lawn chemicals; gardening and buying local produce in season to lower shipping emissions; choosing equipment and clothes made to last many years; and reducing energy consumption at home, work and on the road.

Sustainable living can be as simple as using a personal mug when ordering a latte or as complex as joining a stockholders’ rebellion to force sustainable corporate policies. It also can mean returning to the simpler practices of yesteryear, such as line-drying clothes and bonding more closely with the natural world. For Barbi Gardiner, owner of The Outdoor Apothecary, in Plainfield, Connecticut, embracing a simpler, sustainable lifestyle after leaving a high-pressure job meant “adopting a do-ityourself attitude” that included starting a permaculture garden, composting, raising chickens, foraging and cooking wild food, and creating healing remedies from homegrown and foraged herbs. “Nature is the medicine for what ails us,” she says.

Conscious Simplicity Deeply held values, not money and possessions, shape this form of simpler living, sometimes called soulful or conscious simplicity. Its focus is on life-enhancing experiences, inner growth, spirituality, natural health, creativity, nurturing relationships and social action. Owning bling has little allure. “With conscious simplicity, we can seek lives that are rich with experiences, satisfaction and learning, rather than packed with things,” writes Elgin. Sometimes passion is the driver. Alex Honnold, the renowned rock climber profiled in Free Solo, lived in a van for 10 years while scaling Yosemite’s El Capitan and other formidable peaks. He donates one-third of his income to global solar power initiatives. Millennials like him are finding stuff less enticing:

The Harris Group reports that 72 percent of them say they would rather spend money on experiences than material things. A study from San Francisco State University found that the happiness of buying something new like a car or a laptop fades over time, while spending money on an experience provides joy long after the experience has ended. Deeply held values can mandate a simpler life. Ross Martinie Eiler found his calling 15 years ago when he read about the voluntary poverty of the Catholic Worker Movement, which offers hospitality to the homeless in 178 centers worldwide. “It struck me as an authentic way of living that’s true to the beauty and goodness of the religion,” he says. Today his life is built around the Bloomington, Indiana, Catholic Worker community. He, his wife Andrea and their four children live communally in four houses with other members and guests, sharing meals, belongings and easy-going conversations with the homeless. He tunes pianos part time for money, half of which he donates to the community. For fun, he pounds the keys in a rollicking boogie-woogie band. The committed communal life isn’t always easy. “Every day there’s a new challenge that needs a new approach. Against my will, I’ve been forced to become a better person,” he chuckles. “I have little money on paper—I’m probably in the bottom 10 percent— but I don’t need anything. And yeah, I feel it’s very right for me.” Denver-based health writer Ronica O’Hara can be contacted at OHaraRonica@gmail.com.

Nine Reasons Why Physical Therapy Is Good for You by Cynthia Akey

5

Improve Balance, Gait, and Stability. If you have difficulty walking, have reduced joint mobility or have fallen, a physical therapist can help treat your balance problems by identifying the causes and designing an individual treatment program to help improve your strength, stability and mobility. Those living with a form of hypermobility syndrome (HMS) may experience pain, sprains, joint and ligament injuries, loose joints and dislocations. Physical therapy may include gentle mobilizations, re-education and behavior modifications, and therapeutic exercise programs that focus on strengthening and endurance-building in order to improve postural support.

6

Avoid Surgery. In many cases, physical therapy may be used as an alternative to surgery. Following a physical therapy plan of care can help you eliminate pain, promote healing, and improve strength and flexibility, possibly reducing or eliminating the need for expensive surgery and long recovery times.

P

hysical inactivity is a national health crisis, especially during COVID-19. Being able to move well is the key to living a healthy, active and independent lifestyle. Physical therapy aids people of all ages and abilities in restoring movement capabilities. Anyone can receive physical therapy—you don’t need a referral to see a physical therapist. Here are 10 reasons why physical therapy is good for you.

1

Maximize Movement. If you experience pain while sitting, standing, walking, moving or sleeping, physical therapy can help. Physical therapists can develop a plan of care to restore regular function and help you live a happier, independent life. Regular exercise also reduces stress by increasing endorphins and improving mood.

2

Minimize or Reduce Pain. Living with acute or chronic joint or muscle pain can be unbearable and may require pain medication, which many people 18

would like to reduce or eliminate. According to an article by the CDC, alternatives to addictive opioids should be considered, such as physical therapy, which can reduce pain, improve function and sometimes cost less than long-term pain treatment with opioids. Manual therapy may include joint and soft tissue mobilization to increase circulation. Exercise and movement training reinforce healthy movement patterns.

3

Reduce and Prevent Injuries. With a combination of stretching and movement techniques, a structured, customized exercise education program from a physical therapist will help reduce injury and prevent future injuries.

4

Improve Posture. To combat repetitive forces of frequent sitting and improper standing that often lead to neck, back, shoulder or hip pain, your physical therapist can provide treatments and exercises to reinforce healthy postural alignment.

7

Improve Performance. The repetitive nature of many activities—including walking, running, cycling, racquet sports, basketball, baseball and golf—may cause undue stress on your muscles and joints. Your physical therapist can monitor your movement patterns and optimize your biomechanics to increase range of motion, improve endurance, reduce pain and minimize the risk of injury.

8

Help with Diabetes and Heart Disease. The Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health underscores the pivotal role physical activity plays in health promotion and disease prevention. Becoming more active can help lower blood sugar levels, which is important for those with diabetes. Physical therapy can help people with diabetes take part in safe, effective exercise programs. Your physical therapist can also teach you how to protect painful areas to make them less sensitive to diabetic nerve pain (neuropathy). To prevent heart disease and heart failure, it is important to exercise and choose healthy habits. A physical therapy treat-

ment plan would include a personalized exercise program and prescribed movement to improve mobility, stability, flexibility, strength and endurance.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Weight Management by Ayako Mizuno

A

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity in adults in the U.S. is over 42 percent (2017-2018.) Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. These are among the leading causes of preventable, premature death. Many people have taken the roller coaster ride of weight loss—reduce food intake or certain types of food; increase exercise or try more extreme forms—only to lose weight temporarily, but then gain all of it back, if not more. This is not only unsustainable for the long term, but also harmful to our health. A three-year follow-up of participants in a commercial weight loss program found that 40 percent gained back more weight than they had lost during their diet program, as reported by Internal Medicine. To remain at the ideal weight, it is crucial to treat the root cause of the weight gain, which occurs due to an imbalance of the body and/or mind. If it is not treated, the lost weight will return again and again. Acupuncture can help in this regard. Chinese medicine practitioners do not treat just the condition of excess weight; they treat the whole person. Everyone is unique. A 2017 controlled clinical trial published on PubMed with postpartum subjects found that when acupuncture is combined with traditional weight-loss methods such as diet and exercise, people lose more weight and do it faster and more effectively.

Increases Metabolism. Acupuncture stimulates the thyroid area to boost the functions of the pituitary gland that are related to metabolism. As a result, workouts and daily activities will burn more calories and cause more weight loss. Reduces Inflammation. Inflammation in the intestines, stomach, muscles and other tissues can slow down the metabolism, weaken the immune system, and affect heart health and digestion; thereby, decreasing the ability to lose weight. According to a 2020 study published by PubMed, acupuncture relieves inflammation by lowering the levels of oxidative stress in the body and regulating the immune system. Improves Digestion and Balances Bowel Movement. Gut health is key. Preventing slow digestion will relieve constipation, bloating, and other gastrointestinal issues that result in fat deposits in the body. Acupuncture can promote the repair of gastric mucosal injury and improve gastrointestinal function per a 2011 study published on PubMed.

Suppresses Hunger. Frequent stimulation of specific acupuncture points is an effective method of appetite suppression. Acupuncture stimulates the nervous and endocrine systems to produce brain chemicals and hormones to suppress hunger and appetite. One such chemical, leptin, triggers certain neurons in the hypothalamus to signal our brain that we feel full. When there is a deficiency or imbalance in leptin secretion, this can lead to increased appetite and risk for weight gain. Acupuncture may help reverse leptin insensitivity and, in turn, decrease risk of weight gain according to a 2021 study by Frontiers in Endocrinology. Balances Blood Sugar. Insulin is a key metabolic hormone that regulates blood glucose. Insulin resistance is associated with excess adipose tissue, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Growing evidence supports acupuncture on certain points in the ear and on the body can balance sensitivity to insulin. Lowers Stress. Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins—hormones that make us feel happy. This can create calming and

relaxing effects that reduce the causes for stress eating. When endorphin levels are too low, it negatively affects a person’s health, and increases the likelihood of depression. Research suggests that acupuncture is a safe and effective adjunct for treating major depressive disorder due to its impact on endorphin release and related health benefits. Improves Sleep Quality. A good night’s sleep is vital to lose or maintain weight. Acupuncture can promote and improve the quality of sleep. Improves Water Metabolism. Acupuncture flushes out excess water that is stagnating in the body, resulting in the loss of water weight.

How Chinese Herbal Medicine Works for Weight Loss Various Chinese natural herbal formulas can also help you lose weight in a variety of ways, such as suppressing appetite, increasing metabolism, burning fat, flushing excess water in the body and regulating hormones.

Formulas should be customized for an individual’s unique needs; for instance, if the person suffers from stubborn constipation or has binge/stress eating, the formula will be totally different. For the best results, consult a Chinese medicine practitioner who will work with you to create a treatment plan based on your individual needs. Food is medicine, not our enemy. Once we learn how to think about food in a whole new way, it will heal—not harm—our bodies and minds. Eating for the right reasons will make us healthier and balanced. Eight Foods That Promote a Strong Immune System by LaDonna Gladney

Turmeric is a spice with strong antiviral properties. Recent findings, as published by the National Institutes of Health, describe turmeric’s phytochemical, curcumin, as a “promising target” in the treatment of COVID-19, with the ability to block a cytokine storm. Add to drinks, in cooking, or mix in yogurt—and add black pepper to drastically increase its low bioavailability (absorption). Ginger contains a high level of antioxidants, which prevent cell damage and disease. Add to your food or in smoothies and tea. Lemon has more vitamin C than oranges. It helps your body to heal and recover. Squeeze over food or add to beverages. Aloe Vera has many benefits including antimicrobial effects which kill or stop the growth of bacteria. The juice can be purchased at health food stores; look for organic. Wheatgrass is, among other things, anti-bacterial, making it useful in fighting against some antibiotic resistant infections, according to the Journal of Dental Research and Review. Add to

The immune system is our body’s natural defense against harmful bacteria, toxins, viruses, chemicals and more. One of the best ways to strengthen immunity is through nutrition, which is important for providing essential nutrients—those that the body cannot create in sufficient quantity. Let’s focus on eight foods that promote a strong immune system.

Water Scarcity Woes A Global Problem That’s Getting Worse by Jeremiah Castelo

By 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in areas of water stress as people will be unable to access the water they need. Climate change, population growth, agricultural demands and mismanagement of water resources all contribute to the growing water crisis. The world’s population will rise to 9.7 billion by 2050, leaving even more people in water-stressed conditions. An estimated 60 percent of all surface water on Earth comes from river basins shared by separate nations and almost 600 aquifers cross national boundaries. In places where water is already scarce, this can lead to geopolitical conflict.

26

Greater Milwaukee

NaturalMKE.com

Three in 10 people on Earth currently do not have access to safe and clean water. According to the World Health Organization, 2.1 billion people do not have access to a safely managed water source. An estimated 263 million people must travel over 30 minutes to access water that isn’t clean, and 159 million still drink from untreated surface water sources. One in three people worldwide does not have access to a toilet. Around 2.3 billion people lack access to even basic sanitation services, forcing them to either practice open defecation or use pit latrines and buckets. Fecal contamination in the water supply is a major cause of deadly waterborne diseases such as hepatitis A, norovirus and E. coli. Annually, 1.6 million people die from waterborne diseases. Of the 5 million people that become ill from bad water, most are children. Water privatization causes harm. When corporations site water bottling operations in developing countries like India and Bolivia, they significantly deplete supplies needed by local farmers. In the U.S., when a struggling public water or electricity utility sells their rights to a private corporation, household water and sewer services typically become, respectively, 59 percent and 63 percent more costly. In the U.S., 2.1 trillion gallons of clean water is lost each year due to poor infrastructure, including old, leaky pipes and broken water mains. David Le France, CEO of the American Water Works Asso-

ater scarcity is a legitimate concern. It is true that the hydrologic cycle, the process in which the Earth circulates water throughout its ecosystems, is a closed-loop cycle that neither adds nor takes away water. In theory, the amount of water on Earth will always remain the same. But problems occur when the hydrologic cycle is disrupted, causing some regions to grow arid while others get constant floods. The human activities that disrupt that process include the building of dams, the industrial pollution of waterways, the paving of roads, excessive drilling and bottled water privatization. Here are 10 of the most alarming water scarcity facts that the world is currently facing.

Water Scarcity Solutions

Often, water burdens fall upon women, some of whom walk four miles a day just to fetch water that is likely contaminated. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, it takes about six hours to carry a 44-pound container of water from a source that often has the potential to make them sick, according to the Global Water Institute.

trifonenko ivan/AdobeStock.com

One-third of the world’s largest aquifers are water-stressed. Underground aquifers are naturally replenished through rainfall and surface water, but a deficit occurs when more water is pumped out than replenished. Eight of the biggest aquifers, including those in Saudi Arabia, northwestern India and Pakistan, are not being replenished at all. Meeting the United Nations’ sustainable development goals for the water crisis will cost $114 billion per year. Attaining these critical goals will be timeconsuming, expensive and may face political division. Yet the cost of not doing so is also high. Addressing healthcare needs due to water-related diseases and poor sanitation costs $260 billion globally each year. Water scarcity is real. To ignore it or to assume that it is only a problem of the developing world is to be blind to the reality that the rest of the world is experiencing. Excessive water consumption and poor water management are factors that can be controlled. Supporting clean water initiatives will certainly help the movement against the global water crisis. Finally, educating ourselves and raising awareness is a task we should all take on.

7

Save Water Limit the use of water and of washing machines. Take short showers instead of full baths.

Improve Sewage Systems Improving sewage systems in underserved areas will help to provide clean drinking water and prevent disease and water scarcity.

Educate Empower people to help by showing them how to prevent and mitigate water scarcity problems now and in the future.

8

Better Water Distribution Infrastructure To prevent severe water shortages in times of drought, efforts are needed to connect poor people in developing countries to public water supplies.

3

Recycle Water Learn about and employ available technologies to recycle rainwater and other water used at home.

4 5

Support Water Conservation Allocate money and time to help water conservation efforts around the world. Improve Farming Practices Farming and irrigation practices and technologies need to become more efficient.

6

Use Fewer Chemicals in Farming To ensure clean water and reduce water shortages, farmers need to decrease their use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which leads to groundwater pollution.

How Local Leaders Are Meeting Challenges to Freshwater Conservation by Sheila Julson

M

ilwaukee, which sits on the mighty Lake Michigan and has the Milwaukee, Kinnickinnic and Menomonie rivers running through it, seems to be awash in freshwater. Yet many pollutants—including road salt, pharmaceuticals, plastic pollution, agricultural and lawn chemical runoff, and lead from paint and pipes in old homes—contaminate our waterways that spill into Lake Michigan, the area’s source of drinking water. But not all hope is lost. Below are just a few entities in Milwaukee that are working to promote public responsibility and stewardship of our city’s most precious natural resource.

Nonprofits Promote Ways to Protect Our Waters

Reflo states that its mission is “to catalyze sustainable water use, green infrastructure, and equitable water resource management”. They accomplish this through education, research and the implementation of water projects beneficial to local communities and individuals. Their programs include Green & Healthy Schools, which supports green infrastructure projects at two Milwaukee Public Schools; Innovation & Placemaking, propelling urban green infrastructure; rainwater harvesting projects; and Milwaukee Water Stories, which uses storytelling, games and technology such as the interactive Milwaukee Community Map (Refloh2o.com/milwaukee-community-map) 28

to curate map stories around the theme “Water & Community.” Milwaukee Water Commons recognizes that Milwaukee is a model water hub of the future, but the majority of people in the community have not been included in water health conversations. The organization strives to forge a cross-city network fostering connection, collaboration and broad community leadership on behalf of our common waters. Their six initiative areas are “blue-green jobs” which support responsible stewardship of water resources; water quality; drinking water; arts and culture; water education and recreation; and green infrastructure. The Water School Program, one of their flagship initiatives, brings together five community partners to encourage future water stewards through year-long commitments to the watersheds of the Milwaukee River Basin and Lake Michigan. Milwaukee Riverkeeper is a multifaceted organization that advocates for swimmable, fishable rivers throughout the Milwaukee River basin. Their work consists of monitoring our waterways for baseline water quality, aesthetics, road salt, emerging contaminants, mussels and bacteria. In addition, they offer educational outreach to schools and the public. The group hosts a large annual river cleanup every year to coincide with Earth Day.

“In the Great Lakes Region, we often don’t think about water scarcity, as we have 20 percent of the world’s fresh surface water supply at our doorstep, and 95 percent of the United State’s fresh surface water supply. That said, even in our area, water pollution can still impact the quality of water and imperil drinking water supplies,” emphasizes Cheryl Nenn of Milwaukee Riverkeeper. She cites Waukesha and Madison as examples from our region where pollution from radium (mostly naturally occurring), coal ash and road salt adversely impacted the water supply. Researchers are also just beginning to understand the extent of PFAS, or “forever” chemicals, that are being found in water, sediment, air and agricultural soil. Nenn points out that the Great Lakes Compact limits where Great Lakes water can be sent—only to straddling communities and communities in straddling counties of the Great Lakes Basin. “This Compact remains vitally important to protecting the Great Lakes and water supplies for future generations, but increasing drought in different parts of the country and increasing pollution put further stress on decision-makers—largely the Great Lakes governors and premiers—to keep Great Lakes water in the Great Lakes.” To help reduce water pollution, Nenn recommends that people install rain barrels and rain gardens to soak rain water into the ground instead of sending it to

storm drains that send pollutants to rivers. Minimize use of single-use plastic, fertilizers and pesticides that all find their way to our waterways. Use drop boxes to dispose of old medicines and pharmaceuticals (find out more at TakeBackMyMeds.com). “We also encourage everyone to get involved in stream and community clean-ups to reduce the runoff of trash to area waterways.” Respect Our Waters emphasizes that while our rivers and Lake Michigan are healthier now than they were 10 years ago, they still face challenges. Non-point pollution, carried by stormwater and snow melt, threatens to contaminate our waterways. Because it comes from a variety of sources—yards, driveways, cars, farms—it’s harder to control. “Rain or melting snow washes soil, litter, pet waste, fertilizer and lawn clippings off the pavement and into your storm drain. When storm drain water empties into lakes and streams, these materials become pollutants that can kill fish, close beaches, and increase weed and algae growth,” they explain on their website. Through programs such as Adopt a Storm Drain, Respect Our Waters encourages people to keep storm drains near their homes clear from leaves and debris. Leaves left in water start to decompose, which releases phosphorus, similar to what is found in fertilizer, encouraging harmful algae bloom.

Training Water Conservation Leaders of the Future

Kathy Bates is faculty lead and instructor for the Milwaukee Area Technical College

(MATC) Environmental Health and Water Quality Technology program, an associate degree program at the Mequon campus that promotes environmental protection and sustainability with a focus on protecting our water, air and food supply resources. “In Milwaukee, we might not realize the scarcity of water because we have Lake Michigan right here and people think we have plenty of water,” says Bates. “But to conserve, protect and make water sustainable for future generations, it comes down to educating the general public and the community at large about what we’re putting down our drains that eventually ends up at the treatment plant. Are we raking leaves into the street, which eventually get blown into the storm drains? Plastics pollution is also an emerging contaminant of concern.” The Environmental Health and Water Quality Technology program was launched in 1968. The program trains students for positions in water treatment and recycling operations, water sampling, lab analytical work, field monitoring and more. “Our students love the variety of hands-on work, where they can use their minds along with a variety of instrumentation. It’s not just sitting at a desk all day,” Bates explains. “These jobs, whether related to drinking water or water reclamation, cannot be outsourced—and they provide living wages, good benefits and skills you could take anywhere. Current demand for these workers is still strong, because workers that started in this field during the 1970s and 1980s are retiring rapidly.”

Bates says that these jobs all play a critical role in water conservation by helping to prevent water scarcity through sustainability and green infrastructure. UW School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS), an academic division of UW-Milwaukee, focuses on water research and graduate education. It is the only graduate school of freshwater science in the United States and only one of three in the world. The school also has a new undergraduate degree program where students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Freshwater Sciences to work in a broad range of fields such as water policy and aquatic sciences. The school’s scientists and professors comprise a team of experts in many facets of freshwater study including the Great Lakes ecosystems; nutrients and algae; fish, aquaculture and aquaponics; invasive species; water and cities; lake levels and climate impacts; water and public health; groundwater; water policy; and water technology/industry. Community engagement efforts include K-12 school outreach through activities such as the Lake Sturgeon Bowl tournament, Water Generation ROV Competition and Water Field adventures. Through CLEAR Milwaukee, SFS—along with Milwaukee Riverkeeper, Carroll University and the Urban Ecology Center—recognize emerging contaminants in local streams and Lake Michigan. CLEAR Milwaukee mobilizes volunteers to collect water samples from 20 river stations along our waterways. SFS professionals also share their expertise through speaking engagements. Milwaukee is lucky to have so many dedicated people working on behalf of the city’s clean water, but additional volunteers or funds are always welcome. A Naturopathic Approach to Healthy Skin by Marisa Marciano

S

kin health reflects whole-body health. Its appearance can have profound effects on our psychological wellbeing, while also serving as an indicator of the body’s internal health status and physiological resiliency. Skin complaints such as acne, aging, eczema and rosacea are some of the most common and recurring presentations in clinical practice, and according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, in 2013 an estimated 85 million Americans (or one in four individuals of all ages) were seen by a physician for at least one skin disease. Most conventional approaches to skin health involve the use of topical and/or oral medications which offer temporary relief from symptoms quite successfully; however, exacerbations and recurrence upon their withdrawal can often occur. In these cases and many others, a holistic, preventative approach to skin health and healthy aging can help minimize the need for more invasive therapies and/or potentially harmful interventions, while serving the health of the body as a whole.

Gut-Skin Connection

Multiple studies have linked gastrointestinal health to skin health, particularly for inflammatory skin conditions like acne, eczema and psoriasis, according to Frontiers 30

in Microbiology. Both organs share functional similarities, serving as primary interfaces with the external environment and being essential to the maintenance of physiologic homeostasis. The gut and the skin are also both densely vascularized and richly innervated, having important immune and neuroendocrine roles. Additionally, the intestinal microbiota facilitates both local and cutaneous inflammatory responses. Evidence appears to demonstrate a bidirectional relationship between the skin and the gut, whereby in cases of intestinal dysbiosis and disrupted gut barrier integrity, this connection can result in a positive feedback cycle of metabolic inflammation. Addressing inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract includes healing disturbed intestinal barriers; promoting beneficial gut microbiota and their metabolites; and identifying and avoiding food allergies and sensitivities to help reduce inflammatory immune responses, thus allowing the skin and the mucosal linings of the gastrointestinal tract to heal. Modulation of the microbiome with probiotics and prebiotics (synbiotics) can be incredibly beneficial in the prevention and/or treatment of many inflammatory skin diseases, along with demulcent and anti-inflammatory herbs and foods which have the potential to influence both

gastrointestinal and cutaneous immune defense mechanisms.

Herbal Support

Herbs can play a vital role in supporting skin health, and multiple studies have shown positive results with either equal or superior benefits compared to conventional therapies for a variety of skin disorders when used topically or internally. Tissue healing involves the development of new circulation followed by the laying down of new connective tissue, and medicinal herbs are notably rich in various phytochemicals with key therapeutic actions related to these processes, including controlling inflammation and oxidative stress; slowing down collagen degradation; improving microcirculation; improving tissue detoxification; and decreasing edema and improving lymphatic drainage. Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine to support moisture balance and provide overall nourishment to the skin. Its leaves are rich in triterpenes (mainly asiaticoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid) which have been shown to act upon fibroblasts to improves the synthesis and maturation of collagen and stimulate collagen remodeling, while improving microcirculation and decreasing endothelial cell damage. Both oral and topical administration of gotu

kola extract have been shown to produce more rapid skin growth and a higher rate of wound healing when compared to controls in animal models. Grapeseed (Vitis vinifera) is rich with oligomeric procyanidins which also have several key actions related to improved stabilization of connective tissues. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate its ability to support connective tissue by protecting collagen and elastin within the walls of the microvasculature and facilitating the formation of collagen microfibrils and collagen crosslinking. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is another herb with therapeutic properties associated with tissue healing. Known for centuries as a powerful plant antioxidant, recent research suggests it to be a Nrf2-activator, in addition to supporting microvascular development and improving circulation in the arteries, veins and capillaries. In addition to promoting tissue healing, supporting detoxification (liver, lymphatics and digestion) with NRF2-activators via herbs, collectively (referred to as alteratives or depuratives) can also help reduce toxic burden and subsequent inflammation upon the skin and body as a whole. There are multiple pathways by which the body eliminates waste, and many herbs that can be of help include hepatics and gentle laxatives which support bile flow and bowel elimination such as Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium) and yellow dock (Rumex crispus); lymphatics such as cleavers (Galium aparine), echinacea and calendula (Calendula officinalis); and nutritive and mineral-rich herbs like stinging nettle (Urtica diocia). Dr. Marisa Marciano is a licensed naturopathic doctor and registered herbalist with expertise in the education and clinical applications of therapeutic nutrition and phytotherapy. She is coauthor of The Botanical Medicine Manual: A Quick Reference Evidence Based Guide and is recognized for creating the online herbal resource TheNaturopathicHerbalist.com. She believes in the body’s innate capacity to heal when provided the foundational therapeutic potential of plant medicine.
