Buildgreen Industries:
Creating Synergy for Efficiency
B
uildgreen Industries is a design-build company specializing in renewable energy and conservation headquartered in Myrtle Beach. Our business objective is to implement a platform of integrated renewable energy systems and conservation technologies for both new construction and retrofit projects. We take a comprehensive, cross-technology approach to conservation and energy management that aims to address weaknesses in the current state of the renewable energy business: fragmentation, undercapitalization, perceived impracticality and poor affordability from the consumer’s point of view. Our 30-plus years of experience in the construction trades, specifically concrete construction, has afforded us the expertise and the mindset to address the primary importance of conservation first. Energy production without conservation is wasted money. We address building envelope issues through technical expertise in concrete construction, insulation, air infiltration and other aspects relating to the structure itself. Second, our platform of energy-efficient construction integrates conservation with five other components: geothermal, solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind and energy storage. We evaluate a project for custom application of whichever of these energy systems is most appropriate, alone or in conjunction with other systems. We combine systems so that functions complement each other that expand the capacity of individual systems. We design specially sized systems that are more affordable and more efficient than a singlesystem approach. We are also developing
by Tom W. Baker monitors for real-time feedback of energy production and consumption that will increase consumers’ awareness and responsibility for energy use. Finally, we are a South Carolina company with an understanding of our climate needs and the importance
in making an investment in producing a positive economic impact in our county and state through technological innovation and job creation. Some examples of our projects include a 4200 square foot heated home averaging over 5 years, $70 dollar per month utility bill. "All of this is smart construction using
existing technology emphasizing structures built not requiring complicated mechanical systems. At Buildgreen Industries, we are convinced that our comprehensive platform is the future of practical and affordable renewable energy implementation. We are particularly interested in retrofit projects as older buildings account for most of the energy inefficiencies. We also feel it is essential to build partnerships with school districts, government agencies and universities to accomplish our shared goals: implement-
ing renewable energy technology, reducing energy use in the Coastal Carolinas by 20 percent by the end of this year and creating jobs in our local communities. Effective, affordable green building can be accomplished now, and the Coastal Carolinas should be leading the way. From Baker’s point of view: “I am working towards helping with energy efficiency because it is the right thing to do. We are responsible for ourselves and our children to do what is needed to mostly not waste what we need not waste. Our children need a world that can be sustainable. We are responsible to do our share. Now, today and to do what we are capable of doing.”
Tom W. Baker is president of Buildgreen Industries. He is an advocate and enthusiastic about the benefits and efficiency of green building techniques. The company provides services throughout the Coastal Carolinas including Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Conway, Wilmington, Brunswick County, Horry County, Berkeley County and the surrounding areas.
