Spanish, European Parliaments urged to take notice of HR violations in IOK M A DR I D — P r e sid e nt Azad Jamu and Kashmir (AJK) Masood Khan on Saturday urged Spanish Parliament and European Parliament to take notice of the serious human rights violations in the Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK). In a meeting with Senator Oscar Lopez, Secretary International Relations and Spokesman of the Socialist Party of the Spain, Masood said, “A whole nation, who has yet to decide its future, is being brutalised by India as retaliation for its aspiration for freedom and self-determination.”

He demanded that, “India should be held accountable for its crimes against humanity in the Indian O c c u p i e d K a s h m i r.” Senator Oscar Lopez said,

on President Masood Khan and expressed concern over the continuing tensions in South Asia and the human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The situation in Kashmir was worrying and the human rights of the people of Kashmir must be respected and protected. Lawmakers in the Spanish Parliament were already seized of the situation and would cooperate in the efforts to ameliorate it.” Meanwhile, Pablo Yanez, Head of the International Cooperation of the political party Ciudadanos, called

Spanish leaders underlined the need for dialogue between India and Pakistan to address the longstanding issue of Jammu and Kashmir and contribute to peace and security. Sardar Masood Khan said that the people of Kashmir appreciate attention of Spanish Parliament and Spanish Members of European Parliament to the human rights and humanitarian

crisis in Kashmir. Later in the day, the President of Azad Kashmir also br iefed editor ial boards of leading Spanish newspapers, El Pais and ABC, about the killings, torture, blindings, and incarcerations in the Indian Occupied Kashmir and urged the European media to highlight the atrocities in IOK. He also address addressed a gathering of Pakistani and Kashmiri communit y hosted by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Spain, Rafat Mahdi.

Peace in S Asia not possible without lasting solution of Kashmir dispute: Masood Khan MADRID—President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Sardar Masood Khan on Saturday said that peace in South Asia is not possible without a lasting solution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Addressing at the Elcano Royal Institute in Madrid, he said, “South Asian security faced many challenges and risks including nuclear and conventional race, terrorism and extremism, poverty and economic underdevelopment, climate change, and fair distribution of waters, but the most daunting challenge was nonresolution of the Kashmir.” The President said, “India’s posture of non-engagement of Kashmir and its systemic violations of human rights in the Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) are fraught with most serious risks for peace and security in South

Asia.” The President said, “Kashmir could be a trigger for a wider and more disastrous conflict in the region, as in the past it has been the cause of war - cassus beli - for four wars between India and Pakistan.” Sardar Masood Khan clarified that, “The Kashmir dispute is not about secession of a province of India like Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Assam or Bengal, but the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir who never became part of India. They have yet to exercise their will under the auspices of the United Nations.” In the meantime, and instantly, he demanded that, “The ongoing massive violations of human rights in Kashmir should come to an end, emphasising that, despite severe restrictions,

international human rights NGOs had gathered damning evidence of killings, bringing, rape and enforced disappearances in Kashmir. These crime are being committed everyday with impunity.” Responding to a question, Sardar Masood Khan said, “Kashmir Pandits had not been ethnically cleansed from Kashmir by Kashmiri Muslims. In fact, there are historical bonds between Pandit and Muslim communities. The exodus of Pandits was masterminded and executed by Indian occupation authorities to demonise and paint Kashmiris are bigots and terrorised. Nothing could be further from the truth. The State of Jammu and Kashmir had diversity and all segments would live harmoniously once the Indian occupation

is termination.” For a way forward, Sardar Masood Khan suggested a proactive role by the UN in resolving the Kashmir dispute, resumption of engagement between India and Pakistan, demilitarisation of the IOK, elaboration of nuclear and conventional confidence building measures, strengthening of regional cooperation, and a better use of the additional space created by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Masood Khan said, “India should stop using waters flowing from Jammu and Kashmir as a weapon of war. The Indus Water Treaty, he said, should be implemented faithfully and fairly; and waters should benefit all.”

Turkish PM to Propose Extending Emergency Rule by 3-months

UN Security Council has unanimously extended the mandate of UN political mission in Iraq till July 31, next year. It called on the Iraqi government to continue providing security and logistic support to UN presence on the ground. The mission expressed support for Iraq’s development efforts on political, electoral and humanitarian levels.

Palestine has denounced the ongoing closure of Al-Aqsa mosque compound, calling it a violation of their religious freedoms. Al-Aqsa remained closed on Saturday, a day after a deadly shooting attack outside an entrance to the holy site in occupied East Jerusalem. Palestinian Authority’s minister of religious affairs Sheikh Yusuf Idis said the freedom to worship is a right.

Polish parliament has approved a bill to give MPs and the justice minister the power to appoint judges without consulting judicial circles. Opposition parties and human rights groups say this would erode the independence of the judiciary. The governing Law and Justice party says the reforms are needed because the judiciary is corrupt and serves only the elite.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said he plans to extend emergency rule imposed in the country after an attempted coup on July 15 last year by another three months. He made these comments at a briefing to media representatives in the capital Ankara ahead of official commemorations of the coup anniversary to be observed.

Pakistan has a strong potential, high quality resources and an excellent strategic location, Dercon

Professor Stefan Dercon addressed a seminar today at Pa k ist a n i n st it ute of Development Econom ics (PIDE) on the Economic Transformation in Pakistan. Dercon is a Professor of Econom ic Policy at t he University of Oxford. The seminar was organized by the CPEC centre of excellence as part of their engagement initiative to build a dialogue on various aspects of economy in Pakistan. The federal secretary Planning, Development & Reforms Ministry Shoaib Siddiqui stated that nations build their own destiny by working hard to achieve their targets. He expressed a sense of optimism in the economic prospects of Pakistan and said that the country has already begun its journey towards the path to development. He thanked PIDE for their work and stressed the need for this type of dialogue and for research so that economic corridors can translate into socioeconomic growth. While commenting on the growth indicators of Pakistan, Dercon said that the Pakistan has a huge potential for growth. He suggested that the private sector will lead the road to development with support from the government of Pakistan. He was also impressed by the optimistic surge in the social sector of Pakistan. Dercon has an interest in

applying microeconomics and statistics to problems of development and also consults with DFID as their chief economist. During the seminar, he talked at length about the assessment of Pakistan`s economic issues and offered advice for a robust economic development for Pakistan. While talking to the audience, Dercon stressed on the need for inclusive development in Pakistan and offered the ingredients for success for a developing economy like Pakistan. These ingredients include a vibrant private sector growth to absorb job seekers and a well-functioning social sector as a pre-requisite to development. This involves an outcome oriented industry encouraged by dialogue and discussion around economic prospects. Dercon further said, “Sustained growth and development requires not just hard infrastructure, but also the appropriate ‘soft’ infrastructure. One precondition is peace and stability: without this, no investor will invest for the long-term. The economy would benefit tremendously from peace with neighbours – it would open up untold economic investment and trade opportunities.” Speaking about the need for structural change in the economy, Dercon said that Pakistan has a strong potential, high quality resources and an excellent strategic

location but it will only climb the product ladder by investing in soft infrastructure. While he expressed confidence in the infrastructure development in Pakistan, he suggested a parallel model of investing in the social sector to actually reap the results. Lastly, he commented on the concept of historical context as an important element while determining the development framework. Pakistan wants to grow and replicate the South East Asian economies, but it should rather adapt to its own historical content and follow its own unique economic model to reap results. Responding to a question, he said that peace within the region and an increased interconnectivity is indeed the road to development while the government must also focus on investing in the soft infrastructure. D r Sh a h id R a sh id , t he Executive Director CPEC Centre of Excellence, also commented on the subject by saying that the centre is working extensively to encourage dialogue between the government and stakeholders. He further added that input from independent analysts and internationally renowned economists is quite useful for the economy of Pakistan. Vice Chancellor AsadZaman concluded the event by adding a few of his own insights on the economic transformation in Pakistan. He suggested that Pakistan must also focus on character building of the citizens alongside ensuring inclusive development. He argued that ensuring growth will further lead towards an improvement in human index indicators which will pave way for holistic development in Pakistan.

Erdoğan wrote that there is “no way to sugarcoat this betrayal of Turkey’s friendship,” adding that it is incompatible with bilateral relations and fundamental values alike. “Today, western leaders have a choice between standing in solidarity with terrorists or regaining the favor of the Turkish people,” he said. The president underlined that the thwarting of the coup marked a “turning point in the history of democracy,” adding that it would be a source of hope and inspiration for all people who live under a

dictatorship. He also slammed western leaders for not fully appreciating the significance of what happened in Turkey on July 15, 2016. “Instead of expressing solidarity with my countrymen, a number of western governments and institutions opted to wait and see how the crisis would play out,” Erdoğan said. “Their hypocrisy and double standards deeply disturbed the Turkish people, who risked everything to defend freedom,” he added. In his article, the president also stressed the importance of bringing Fetullah Gülen and his followers to justice, saying evidence proves they were behind the foiled coup. It “isn’t just important for

Turkey but for democracy everywhere,” Erdoğan said. “Our goal is to prosecute criminals to the full extent of the law while building our country’s resilience to future attacks.” According to the Turkish government, the Gülenist Teror Group (FETÖ) and its U.S.-based leader Gülen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which led to the death of 250 people and injured nearly 2,200 others. FETÖ is accused of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.

IT Labs in KP give young girls access to a digital marketplace of ideas and products

Abbottabad – Most schools in Pakistan deliver academic education and leave out digital literacy. In two schools in Abbatoabad two state-of-the-art Information Communication Technology (ICT) labs are being inaugurated by local MPAs – MalihaAsghar Khan and Nargis Ali. Pakistan is the 20th largest nation in terms of Internet users in the world. However, the tool is utilized by only 18% of the population. Women and girls are a miniscule part of this percentage. KP Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is working towards changing that dismal development indicator. They are doing this by ensuring that graduates of their education

system are equipped with necessary IT skills so they can be not just educated but marketable. Linking academia with industry. “We have to start early and ensure that our education structure prepares students for the 21stcentaury,” said MPA MalihaAsghar Khan. Young girl students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School No. 2 and Jhangi typed away displaying the recent coding skills they learned. If all goes according to plan, these girls will be able to create websites and applications by the time they graduate high school, or at the least understand the basics. This is even more crucial in a province like KP where women’s mobility is limited. “These

IT Labs in our schools are a significant step towards modern education. Not only schools’ students but community women will also be benefiting from these labs in the afternoon classes, this way both mothers and their children will receive computer education”said MPA Nargis Ali. In the evenings the labs are opened to the wider community of women who want to learn to connect to the web, build an identity and get acquainted with crucial information on health or educational opportunities, for instance. There are going to be 500 newly established IT labs across KP schools and out of these half of them will be ingirls education institutions.

Smart’ money moving to ‘green’ financing: UN report NEW YORK—Even though investments towards sustainable development in developing countries have fallen short by nearly $2.5 trillion each year, emerging financial products and encouraging policies illustrate that both public and private sectors are serious about correcting that trend, the United Nations environment arm has said. In its new report on green finance, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has noted that the G20 and other countries have taken huge strides over the last year towards mobilizing public resources and private capital needed to make sustainable

development and climate action a reality. “The world has committed to creating a better future for people and planet. But we will not be able to achieve [this] vision without the global financial system using its capital to fuel the transformation,” said the Executive Director of UNEP, Erik Solheim, in a statement announcing the findings. “This new research shows encouraging progress in this regard. From a record number of new green finance measures to ambitious plans for green finance hubs, we are seeing the smart money move to green financing,” he added.

IMF cuts Brazil growth estimate for 2018 WASHI NGTON —Brazil’s economy appears to have turned a corner, but political uncertainty is on the rise, prompting the International Monetary Fund on Thursday to cut its 2018 growth forecast for the recession-hit country. The recovery is likely to be “subdued” because “a recent rise in political uncertainty has cast a shadow over the outlook,” the fund said in its annual review of the Brazilian economy. The IMF now forecasts growth rise to 0.3 percent this year -a slight increase from the 0.2 percent estimate in April, and a dramatic improvement over the 3.6 percent contraction

last year. But the IMF cut the growth outlook for 2018 to 1.3 percent from 1.7 percent in its April report. The economy is expected to expand by two percent in 2019 and subsequent years. “Brazil’s deep recession appears close to an end,” the report said, acknowledging the “ambitious reform agenda” of President Michel Temer’s government. But Temer is battling for his political survival after being charged with taking bribes. The IMF cautioned that “the government’s ability to deliver on social security reform, a necessary step toward securing fiscal sustainability, has

become more uncertain -- and, with national elections scheduled for 2018, the window for legislative action is closing.” The IMF prepared its report before the Brazilian Senate this week passed sweeping and controversial labor reforms, which allow companies and workers to negotiate agreements on certain issues, end compulsory union dues and give firms more flexibility on work hours and vacations for employees. Temer has said Brazil’s economy faces a meltdown without severe fiscal discipline and belt tightening, and succeeded in getting Congress to pass a 20-year freeze on spending increases.
