Neither JIT report authentic, nor its probe fair: Sharif family lawyer
ISLAMABAD, 18 JUL (DNA) - Presenting arguments over Panamagate Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report in Supreme Court of Pakistan, Sharif family lawyer Khawaja Harris said that neither JIT report is authentic nor its probe was fair. A three-member SC bench comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan resumed the hearing of Panama case during which Khawaja Harris said that JIT proceeded from the mandate as it was allowed to find answers of only thirteen questions but it included two more queries by its own. No probe can be carried out on the report, he continued. Responding to the counsel’s stance, the bench remarked that
the case was forwarded to JIT due to unsatisfactory arguments of Sharif family. The members said we are not bound to follow JIT suggestions while the court can make decision on uncontroversial documents. Justice Ijazul Ahsan said that Sharif family adopted the approach to not tell anything to the JIT tasked to inspect every available record. The counsel said JIT inspected those cases which were already disposed of by the courts over which the bench asked do you mean that JIT cannot review the past cases. The court remarked that Sharif family hasn’t denied any document in its plea on which Khawaja Harris said that JIT didn’t ask for explanation on
any data. Justice Azmat asked about the bank account of Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif in Saudi Arabia on which Khawaja Harris said that he has one and that the details of premier’s assets have already been submitted in the court. He said volume 10 was not made public on which Justice Ijaz remarked that there is no evidence present in this volume but we can also open it if you insist. The court has also assured that JIT is not investigating the case anymore. Moreover, the hearing has been adjourned till Wednesday. PM Nawaz Sharif in April narrowly escaped disqualification after the Supreme Court ruled
there was insufficient evidence to remove him by a 2-3 split over documents released by the Panama Papers leak into off-shore wealth. But it ordered further investigations, and the formation of the Joint Investigation Te a m ( J I T ) p a n e l t h a t included Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Additional Director General Wajid Zia, Military Intelligence’s Brig Kamran Khurshid, National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Director Irfan Naeem Mangi, State Bank of Pakistan’s Amer Aziz, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan’s (SECP) Executive Director Bilal Rasool and Inter-Services Intelligence’s Brig Muhammad Nauman Saeed.

ISL A M A BA D — Pe r r y John Calderwood, High Commissioner of Canada on Tuesday said that Pakistan and Canada have good potential to enhance cooperation in information and communication technology (ICT), agriculture, energy, mining and other fields and private sectors of both countries have to play the leading role in exploiting these opportunities. Addressing the business community at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), he said, “Canada and Pakistan could complement each other in many areas by sharing expertise and developing partnerships. Canada was quite strong in oil and gas, hydro and solar power and Pakistan could benefit from its expertise to improve
its energy generation.” Perry John Calderwood said, “Canada is an advanced economy and Pak ist an could achieve better results by developing close cooperation with it. Canada is providing development assistance to Pakistan for women economic empowerment and added that the new development policy of Canada would also benefit Pakistan.” He said, “Pakistan is a potential country for business and investment, but due to security concerns, Canadian investors were avoiding to visit Pakistan. However, the security situation was now improving and was hopeful that it will help Canadian investors to explore Pakistan.” K halid Iqbal Mali k, President, ICCI in his
address said, “Pakistan and Canada enjoy old friendly relations as they established diplomatic relations in 1947. However, bilateral trade of just over $1 billion in 2015 did not reflect the real potential of both countries.” He said, “Trade in limited items was the main reason of low trade volume and stressed that both countries should focus on trade diversification to improve bilateral trade figure. Trade balance was in favor of Canada and it should enhance its imports from Pakistan as many Pakistan products could meet the needs of Canadian customers at affordable cost.” He emphasi zed t hat, “Canadian businessmen should benefit from Pakistan’s IT-enabled services in animation and gaming, retail banking and finance, mobile content, document management and call centers.” ICCI President said, “Many sectors of Pakistan’s economy including oil and gas, infrastructure, power generation, information and communication technologies, mining, agro business, wood sector and science and technology offered great investment potential to Canadian companies and they should explore these
sectors.” He said, “Pakistan needed more oil rigs and mining equipment to exploit its vast natural resources and Canada should take benefit of these opportunities. Canadian investors should also explore joint ventures and investment in China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects in Pakistan. He said that Pakistani exporters have to face cumbersome visa formalities for attending trade fairs in Canada while its travel advisories discouraged Canadian businesspeople from visiting Pakistan. UNITED NATIONS—Iran is receiving “contradictory signals” from the US administration about the fate of the nuclear deal but Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said he has yet to discuss it with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. In New York to attend a UN forum on development, Zarif said he was open to speak with Tillerson as Washington carries out a review of the 2015 agreement reached with world powers on curbing Iran’s nuclear program. “There are no communications between myself and
Secretary Tillerson,” Zarif said at an event at the Council on Foreign Relations. “It doesn’t mean there can’t be. The possibilities for engagement… have always been open.” President Donald Trump campaigned on a pledge to scrap the nuclear ag reement – wh ich he described as “the worst deal ever” – and in May ordered a review of the pact. “We receive contradictory signals,” Zarif said when asked about the possible outcome of the review. “It’s very clear that Iran is serious about the
nuclear deal and we believe the nuclear deal can lay the foundation.” The absence of communication with the US administration is in sharp contrast with Zarif’s dealings with former secretary of state John Kerry, with whom he negotiated the agreement. Zarif said he and Kerry spent more time together “than with anybody else.” The foreign minister asserted that Iran would never seek to develop nuclear weapons and recalled that the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, had certified that Tehran
was in compliance with the agreement. Representatives of the five nuclear powers – China, Russia, France, Britain, the United States – plus Germany are to meet in Vienna on Friday to take stock of the deal. Zarif said they would discuss Iran’s complaints about non-US compliance, accusing the US administration of failing to lift sanctions in line with the deal. Any move by the US Congress to re-impose sanctions on Iran would ‘of course’ be “a violation” of the nuclear deal, Zarif said, but he did not say what Tehran’s response would be to such legislation. The foreign minister also offered to do “all it takes from my side” to address, on humanitarian grounds, the case of a Chinese-American sentenced to 10 years in prison and that of other US detainees. Asked about Xiyue Wang, a 37-year-old researcher at Princeton University, Zarif said Iran’s courts were independent and that “we in the government do not have any control over the decisions of the judiciary.—DNA
BISP to initiate University Poverty Graduation Buddy Programme: Marvi RAWALPINDI—Minister of State and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme MNA Marvi Memon on Tuesday said that BISP is going to initiate a “University Poverty Graduation Buddy Programme” that would link youth with the poorest vulnerable women of Pakistan with the aim to help them graduate out of poverty. “Under this partnership, university students would help BISP beneficiaries in identifying their potential, fine tune their abilities and guide them on sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by them,” she said while chairing a meeting on poverty graduation at BISP Headquarters. Marvi said, “Under this
initiative, Higher Education Commission (HEC) enlisted universities across Pakistan have been asked to nominate 20 students each to participate in the competition in which students will be linked with BISP beneficiaries in the areas near to the participating universities.” “One student will pair up with one beneficiary. The student will evaluate the potential of BISP beneficiary and help her in overcoming challenges and constraints faced by her by suggesting viable solutions. The student will guide the beneficiary in product development and marketing skills. The student will also render help in marketing of product made by beneficiary through E-commerce, thus
helping her graduate out of poverty. The student will then showcase the success in a case study to a panel of judges who will choose the best graduation model,” she added. The Chairperson said, “BISP has contributed significantly towards reducing malnutrition, poverty reduction, political and economic empowerment, school enrollment and is helping its beneficiaries graduate out of poverty.” “However, the talented BISP benef iciaries face several challenges like lack of information, access to opportunities, less understanding of market and exclusion. So, BISP plans to engage youth for the guidance of the beneficiaries,” she said. She appealed
that, “Universities should encourage their students to participate in this initiative, as this is not only a competition but a noble cause that would help BISP beneficiaries graduate out of poverty.” The idea of “University Poverty Graduation Buddy Programme” is derived from “Empower her,” a Maghreb Women Economic Empowerment Initiative by World Bank that is based on Hackathon model. The model seeks to identify creative ways to address constraints preventing women participation in labor force by bringing together young developers and women associations that come up with creative solutions for the under privileged women.

Kashmiris face severe shortage of commodities SRINAGAR—The authorities in the name of so-called security are impeding the free movement of trucks carrying essentials of life to Kashmir valley, resulting in severe shortage of essentials of life, medicines and other goods in the Valley. The movement of trucks from India to Jammu is smooth, but the onward movement is scuttled. The business activities have virtually come to a halt in the valley and if the things continue to prevail there would be economic devastation in Kashmir, a daily paper from Jammu said. For the past couple of weeks hardly a tr uck car r ying
essentials of life has reached the Kashmir valley. As a result of official order for the stoppage of the trucks after every 30 kilometers on the highway, it takes at least 10 days for a truck to reach Srinagar from Jammu. The authorities manning the Srinagar-Jammu highway are creating hurdles in the free movement of trucks carrying essentials of life, medicines and other goods. The nonentry of the trucks has led to scarcity of the goods in the Kashmir valley, the paper revealed. “In the name of security, the officials are causing unnecessary harassment to the drivers
carrying essentials of life, medicines and other goods for the valley. These officials order for the stopping of the trucks at regular intervals on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. These officials say that import of goods to the valley is not a priority for them,” the report added. The report said that since the raw material needed for the industries of Kashmir comes from outside such entities are facing huge economic losses. The people manning the industries are using their influence to get their trucks released on the highway, but still there is no relief for them.—DNA

Martin Dow launches National Consensus Guidelines Handbook ISLAMABAD—Martin Dow in collaboration with Dr. Salman Faridi announced on Tuesday the launch of “National Consensus Guidelines for Chemoprophylaxis and Surgical Site Infections” handbook at an event. The twenty five page pocket book containing these guidelines has been compiled after consulting with a consortium of leading practicing surgeons, infectious disease specialists, gynecologists and microbiologists from teaching and public hospitals from across the country. A total of thirty-one of the top surgeons in the country provided their input in preparing these guidelines for the purpose of advising surgeons nationwide. This handy guidebook on evidenced based practices, as per international literature, would serve to reduce the incidents of infection in surgical procedures. Speaking to the doctors and media, Dr. Salman Faridi, MBBS, FRCS, Professor of Surgery, Medical Director at Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College, Karachi commented, “Currently there is a lack of uniformity among surgical practices across the country. Through the National
Consensus Guidelines for Chemoprophylaxis and Surgical Site Infections we hope to bring all surgeons on the same page.” “One of the problems of surgical practice in Pakistan is the lack of standardization when it comes to treating and preventing surgical infections. Inappropriate antibiotic usage also leads to drug resistance which in practical terms means many infections become difficult to eradicate. Hence the need was felt for having advisory guidelines across the country on best antibiotic usage practices as evidenced by international literature and local microbiology,” he said. The primary objective behind developing these guidelines is to provide an infection control document which encourages the appropriate use of antibiotics, both, as a chemo prophylactic agent and as a curative agent for surgical site infections with an additional benefit in preventing drug resistance. This will result in strengthening antibiotic stewardship by reducing the irrational use of antibiotics in dealing with such conditions. Jawed Akhai, Chairman Martin Dow Group stated, “We are
happy to represent the ‘Consensus guidelines on Chemoprophylaxis and Surgical Site Infections.’ By introducing this handbook we hope to provide surgeons with guidelines to help ensure and enhance patient safety, by reducing infections and preventing drug resistance so antibiotics don’t lose their efficacy.” “At our company we are continuously striving to create a distinction in healthcare. On behalf of my company, I would like to thank Dr. Salman Faridi and all the surgeons who contributed towards the development of this handbook, through which we aim to add quality and value to the profession of surgery. We hope that these guidelines will open up new horizons in the fields of medical education and practices in the country which will bring about a significant change in the lives and well-being of patients,” he said. The consensus guidelines handbook which is to be launched in multiple cities across Pakistan covers all general, surgical and gynecological surgeries.

Kuwait Airways—History
On the wave of the oil boom of the 1940s, a national carrier was born in 1954. Initially, Kuwait Airways Company served a limited network of Abadan, Beirut, Damascus and Jerusalem but a year later the fledgling carrier was facing economic hardship, and the government of Kuwait took a 50% interest in the airline, subsequently doubling the company’s capital. Having entered the rough and tumble world of aviation, the government finally took out 100% share in Kuwait Airways. Kuwait Airways entered the jet age in 1962 by leasing a Comet 4-C, the world’s first jetengined airliner. In the 1960s, the national carrier rapidly expanded its route map, and
scheduled services to London begun three times a week. To keep pace with fast-moving aviation needs, three Boeing 707s were delivered in 1968. Ten years later, Kuwait Airways had an all -Boeing 707 fleet of eight aircraft. In 1978, Kuwait Airways entered the wide-body age by taking delivery of its first two B747-200s, adding a third the following year. This expansion permitted Kuwait Airways to extend its network to New York to the west and Manila to the east. Modernization of the fleet continued, and four B727200s were delivered in 19801981. Two years later eight Airbus A310s and A300-600s were delivered, and in 1986 three Boeing 767-200ER
aircraft joined the wide-body fleet. Following the destruction of its premises and 15 of its aircraft during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, the airline was relaunched. Kuwait Airways fleet now comprises three A320-200s, three A310300s, five A300-605Rs, four A340-300s and two Boeing B777s, bringing the fleet to 17 aircraft, equipped with the latest entertainment systems. Kuwait Airways aims to re-establish its network to reach more than 46 countries around the globe with a firm commitment to providing the finest service and comfort to passengers while continuing to rank safety as one of highest priorities.
Macron puts France top of ‘soft power’ rankings: survey
PARIS—France has leapfrogged the United States and Britain as the world’s top so-called soft power, helped by the election of President Emmanuel Macron, a study of countries’ non-military global inf luence showed Tuesday. While France has risen, Donald Trump’s ascent to the White House has seen the US slip from the top last year to third place in the Soft Power 30 study, compiled by PR company Portland Communications and the Universit y of Souther n California. Soft power measures a country’s ability to secure international alliances and influence others through its attraction and appeal. The study uses polling in 25 countries and digital data to measure a country’s influence. It takes into account factors such as the ability of countries to attract foreign
students to its universities and tourists, as well as its cultural allure. France’s rapid rise from fifth place last year, when it was in the doldrums under unpopular ex-president Francois Hollande, is partly due to the centrist Macron’s election in May. But the country’s diplomatic reach also played a key role. “France’s greatest strength lies in its vast diplomatic network,” the study says. “It is unrivalled in terms of membership to multilateral and international organisations, as well as in its diplomatic cultural missions. “With Macron having long campaigned for cooperation and integration, it is not unreasonable to expect France’s global engagement and influence to grow.” France also remains the world’s top tourist destination, the report said. The
terror attacks that have cost the lives of more than 230 people since 2015 “have not stopped tourists flocking to France and enjoying its rich cultural offering, cuisine, and lifestyle,” the report says. The top five countries by order are France, Britain, US, Germany and Canada. Japan has risen to sixth place from seventh, Switzerland is seventh and Australia slips to eighth. The survey attributes the US decline — it has slipped from first last year to third — to a deterioration of “global sentiment” as a result of Trump’s “America First” policy. The US was still “unrivalled” in higher education, technological innovation and the production of film, music and TV, it pointed out.—Source: kuwaitairways.com
