BALLOONIES
FROM YOUR COMMITTEE
BALLOONIES EDUCATE - PROMOTE - INFORM
Dear NABAS member, Welcome to another issue of Balloonies. I can’t believe how quickly this seems to come around, and how often Kate reminds me I need to do another intro! In this issue, I wanted to talk to you about pricing and the adverse effect it has on all of us on every level. There are so many focused solely on price, whether buying or selling, that they forget to focus on the important things including, but not limited to, added value, making a profit and building strong relationships. However, I’ve had a change of heart, and we will leave this topic for another edition in the not too distant future, but please remember we will be holding a training day on 6th July in Coventry, where we will be focusing purely on business building, and including such topics as Marketing, Social Media, Pricing and Effective selling. So if you are serious about taking your business to a higher level, please book your place for what promises to be the most important date in this year’s calendar. As some of you know, we had discussed a NABAS Event & Party in Manchester towards the end of this year. After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided to hold back till next year. There is a very good reason for this, and that is NABAS will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary, so we want to make our association’s third decade really special for all of you. But don’t despair, that doesn’t mean we won’t be holding training days and networking opportunities throughout this year. So the more astute amongst you are probably asking why the change of mind on the topic I am discussing in this issue? Well if you are sitting comfortably, I will tell you. It stems from a simple Facebook post in “Balloon Friends”, where a member asked which should they join, NABAS or BAPIA and the comments were really interesting, but not one had any relevance to the NABAS of today. Actually that’s not quite true, one of the responses mentioned that some of the NABAS committee had ego’s!! All the comments were based on how NABAS was in the past, and all the issues it used to have, and yes almost all were correct; they were talking about the same NABAS I resigned from for over 8 years while manufacturers, wholesalers, decorators and individuals tried to put their own agendas first. The committee asked me to respond, but I respectfully declined, as I’m not really a fan of “Trial By Facebook”, it can get very vindictive, bitter, spiteful and libellous with more damage than good being done! My response to the committee is the same as it is to you, we show them the difference through our actions and deeds, and this is where you come in. As repetition is the mother of all skill, I’ll say it yet again. This is your association, it is run for the members, by the members; there is nothing more powerful and valuable than this. Every one of you brings immense value to NABAS, and your input , wants and needs become a reality by us all working together with no ulterior motive other than to grow our association and respective businesses. Of equal importance, we won’t allow any manufacturer to dictate terms and tell us who we can and can’t train, who’s balloons we can use, who can teach us and what we can teach! Cont99.. Also, may I put in print that NABAS as an independent association run for the members by the members, has absolutely no issue with BAPIA or indeed Pioneer, in fact, if the opportunity arises of our working together for the good of all our members and the industry, I would be the first to recommend looking at our options. Of course I didn’t approve of their trying to rip the heart out of NABAS, this certainly wasn’t in the best interest of the members or our industry, but the fact that NABAS is in the best shape it’s been in for a very long time, speaks volumes for what a united organisation can achieve. For the first time in a very long time, we are being taken very seriously, and interest from all sectors of our industry is on the rise. On the plus side, it’s made everyone up their game, but as is usually the case, the more you grow and the better you do, the negative comments start to circulate. So this is where you come in, we are ready for our next stage of growth, but we can only do this with you as our ambassadors, we want you to be proud of your association, your membership and the help and support NABAS gives you, and we want you to tell others about it. Make sure your customers and clients know you are a NABAS member, and help them understand the benefits of dealing with a NABAS member. There is one more difference I want to highlight, and that’s our desire to work with you and help your business grow. As an example, we have a young lady who has the potential of being a bright light in our industry and a very good teacher. In fact, she is already providing sell out courses around the UK. By the time you receive this issue of Balloonies, she should have received NABAS Teacher status, I believe this is something to be celebrated, and new teachers with new ideas and a new perspective should be embraced, and yet some of the old guard feel threatened! NABAS should embrace change and we value the opportunity of bringing new teachers, new skills, new products and supporting All our members. I originally “reluctantly” agreed to come back to NABAS for a 3 to 6 month period to help revive and grow our association. I’ve been told in no uncertain terms that I am responsible for a number of the original committee resigning, if that is indeed the case, it’s probably the best thing I could have done for NABAS. You now have a committee wanting to work with you, support you and grow our association. The upbeat vibe at the AGM, the positive comments on Facebook, the interest in businesses taking notice and wanting to join us are testimony to our moving in the right direction. So let’s continue building this together! 29 Years and counting9.. As always, if there are areas you would like us to focus on, simply let us know. We really are here to help take your business to a higher level! George Oustayiannis George Oustayiannis is the current Chairman of NABAS and the Managing Director of GO International. He can be contacted via NABAS or by email: george@gointernational.co.uk or by calling : 01438 745746.

NABAS members have been doing some amazing jobs - just take a look over the following pages. If you have something that you want to share then do let the NABAS office know - info@nabas.co.uk - what better way to promote your work to show future clients than an article in your industry association's magazine. Heather Warburton of The BalIoon Gallery did these decorations for a primary school who for the first time in their history had obtained a good ofsted report (after a lot of hard work with the school and the children) and they were having a great celebration.. The frog is their symbol for being helpful and the children get stickers with a frog on when they demonstrate this. The figures at the bottom of the arch were the arch guardians, done to cover over the brick weights used to weight the arches down.

The event was the Great Manchester Run, Europe's largest and premier 10k race, featuring some of the world’s best runners and hosts of celebrities too. A team of 4 of us started work on Saturday evening around 8pm, in an empty commercial unit, constructing arches to span the roads of Manchester city centre, colour co-ordinated columns to mark out the areas where runners should assemble. Further arches and pillars were supplied in the Albert Square charity village area and along the course of the race itself. After the last runner has passed a total de-rig takes place. We've not calculated the exact number of balloons used yet, but it’s well into the thousands ! Paul Gillen Balloon Creations

6ft Balloon Shoe courtesy of Pink Tree Parties Ltd www.pinktreeparties.co.uk
We were asked to make a 6ft pink high heeled shoe for a local venue as they were having a “Sex in the City” Girls Night Out event. Just using a “NOT” stand from Ikea we spent several hours playing with different combinations to get the scale and shape correct. Everyone loved it and we got oodles of positive feedback from the Events Co-ordinator. To help us we put together some rough notes which are really just for us for when we make the next shoe, however other Balloonies have been interested in them so if you feel they'll be useful then you're more than welcome to print this too. Notes for creating a .6ft Balloon Shoe ♦

5” latex balloons in various sizes tied tightly into duplets and locked slid onto a 6ft tall “NOT” Stand (Ikea), one duplet locking the other duplet into place to create a row of 4 balloons. I pump up to 4 ½ pumps of a green Qualatex hand pump, squeeze latex well to stretch and knot together high and tight so that they stay a uniform colour with thin latex at the end. Majority of rows are 1 pump quads, then graduate the heel up to approx. 4 ½ - 5ft when you’re on 4 ½ pump quads 11” latex balloons in various sizes, all with the air squeezed to thin the latex to a uniform colour, all tied tightly into duplets with a 3 rd tied tightly to one to the duplets and then a 3 balloon twisted into a duplet to create a 5-balloon row. 6 pumps of Qualatex hand pump x 16 rows of 5 and one 7-pump row of 5. Ribbon tied centrally and permanently knotted to the balloon knots of the first (7-pump) row. Press second (6-pump) row firmly down onto first row and pull up the ribbon through the centre, knot again over the balloon knots whilst they’re pressed down as far as they can go. Repeat for each row so they’re all very tightly squashed together and knotted into place. Tightly tying the duplets together and tightly squashing the rows together ensures the 5balloon garland is really secure and stays in whatever shape you bend it into, without gaps forming and it losing its shape. Slide this garland (6 pumps end) onto the “NOT” stand above the heel and use ribbons to tie into the heel balloons. The other end (with the 7-pump row) will join to the toe section of the shoe.

Inflate rows of 5 balloons all tied tightly together and all inflated to 8-pumps (then squeezed to even out the latex). Tie fishing wire to one row, then put the 2 nd row on top, pushed down firmly then the wire figure-of-8 wrapped around balloons (done this way so there’s a bit more flexibility in this garland) Continue until you have enough garland that when folded back on itself it creates a toe section which is in proportion to the instep and heel. Tie the end together tightly to make an oval shape and manoeuvre the balloons into the correct toe shape. Fishing wire across the toe section width to pull sides in together to the desired width of toe section, fill middle with 8-pump duplets and tie into place. 5-pump black quads of 11” latex and the use their balloon necks to tie to a balloon neck in the garland above, wiggle around and position so they appear to be a constant row all around the underneath. Tie the instep garland into the toe garland where the looser garland ends meet. If needed tie in heavy sand weights in the same colours in the middle of the toe balloons to weight this part into place. Bend instep garland into desired instep shape. A 7-pump duplet squeezed and knotted then tied together at the end of the balloon necks so there’s about 1 ½” of neck between the balloons, then slide this into place around where the instep joins the toe to fill out this area. Now onto the heel…inflate lots of 6-pump duplets (make one 5-balloon row to wrap around the top of the Not stand above the garland) use the other loose duplets to fill in gaps and form the higher heel part curving out at the back. Tie the necks of the duplets to the NOT stand or other balloon necks to secure in place. This part is done by eye, keeping everything in proportion. Add balloon decoration if required.

THE POWER OF A BALLOON A regular customer purchased an ever popular large Singing Balloon from our shop, Rainbow Balloons, based in Cheshire. It was purchased as a gift for her mother who lives some miles away in London. She mentioned that she was travelling to London by rail, so asked if we could place the singing balloon into a large bag for ease of travel; which we did and off she went. About a week later this customer returned to our shop and asked to speak to me personally. She stated that she had something to tell me about the singing balloon. My initial thought was “here we go” the balloon deflated or popped and can I have a refund; but this was not the case. She said that whilst travelling down to London, the singing balloon would continuously kick off with its rendition of “Happy Birthday To You” due to the vibrations and movement of the train. I am sure this was much to the delight (or not) of other passengers within the carriage. After a rather lengthy play a male voice with a Liverpool accent shouted “whose birthday is it?”, our customer replied “it’s my mothers birthday”, then the guy retorted “what’s this old birds name?”, “Mary” she replied, and “how old is Mary?” he asked; “92” she replied. After all this banter the guy said “why don’t we all sing Happy Birthday to Mary” and guess what - the whole of the carriage burst into song and sang Happy Birthday to someone they didn’t know. It just goes to show the power of a balloon and how it brought fun and joy to many passengers that day in that particular carriage travelling from Manchester to London. BALLOON RELEASES It is very concerning that some Charities are heading down the road of Virtual Balloon Races/Releases rather than the real thing. This will eventually affect balloon retailers and balloon businesses. Many Charities choose this route as they are not aware that there is no environmental impact from a balloon race/release carried out in accordance with the NABAS Code of Conduct for Balloon Releases. All NABAS members are sent a copy of the Code when they join and you can also download it from our website:
http://www.nabas.co.uk/about-balloons/ As NABAS members we need to let any charities know that we love our environment and that we will continue to stand by our strict guidelines for all balloon releases. Mitch Gilbert, Rainbow Balloons NABAS Committee Member

B-Loony’s Innova on Saves Helium and the Environment “Makes your helium go further – makes your cylinder last longer” B-Loony has always been a company at the forefront of innova#on and new product development and they have been hard at work trying to help party and promo#onal balloon users to overcome a few headaches: What to do about saving helium balloon gas and money and how to be more environmentally friendly when using helium balloons with valves? There have been sugges#ons in the media that using helium for party balloons takes scarce resources of the precious gas from important medical uses. So B-Loony have come up with an ingenious inven#on. It is a special balloon valve which can save up to 30% of the helium normally used to fill a balloon. This means that users of helium balloon gas can make a massive cost saving by using less helium and they are helping the environment as well by using less of this valuable gas.
