BALLOONIES

FROM YOUR COMMITTEE

BALLOONIES EDUCATE - PROMOTE - INFORM

Dear NABAS member,

As I sit down to write this, the committee and I are still on a high following the NABAS AGM. We are even more excited to be busy working on our 30th Anniversary Celebrations at Warwick University on 26th and 27th November. The AGM certainly raised the bar in members’ expectations, but I believe we have the ability to bring you something truly spectacular, as we continue to see NABAS go from strength to strength. It’s always a challenge to convey just how important attending events is, and I know that so many of you would like them positioned within 5 minutes of your front door or on a different date, but regrettably that just can’t always happen. The reality is, you have to look at everything we are trying to do for YOU on merit - if you can see and understand the benefits attending bring to YOU and YOUR Business, then you really do need to invest in yourself and make the time and effort. It kind of reminds me of a success parable that I’d like to share with you. It’s probably been conveyed better by others, but I’ll do my best to try and get the message across. As I’m currently working on the Christmas section of our website it’s quite appropriate, so...are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin: Michael was a young boy from a very poor family, but his cousin Matthew was far more fortunate. Each year, he would ask Santa for whatever his cousin Matthew asked for. One year they both asked for a pony, Matthew got his pony, but poor Michael got hand me down clothes and a few second hand books. The next year, thinking he had done something wrong the year before, he copied Matthew’s letter to Santa word for word, asking politely for a bicycle. Matthew got his bicycle, but Michael got more hand me down clothes and some second hand books! He ran outside the house with tear filled eyes and looked to the sky and he said, “Okay Santa, if that’s the way you want to play it, I don’t need you anymore. I will be my own Santa”. Hopefully the points are obvious - most people childishly rely on others to appoint, to authorise, to promote, to grant permission and to set their life agendas for them. Very few accept full responsibility to be their own ‘Santa’ and make their own wishes come true. In other words, we need to take full responsibility for our future and our lives. Sorry, but there really isn’t a generous fat guy in a red suit coming down your chimney with a sack full of goodies and a year’s worth of mortgage payments, holidays and spending money that you’ve been dreaming of. Unless you become your own Santa. So as fellow business owners, what should we be doing? I’d recommend that you really examine every aspect of your business. This may be obvious, but it’s astounding how many of us do the same things every day and wonder why our business isn’t growing! Start measuring results - what is working well, what can be improved, what needs to be ditched. Also realise that this is a Marathon not a Sprint, what I mean by that is don’t expect immediate results. Sometimes, we just need to plant the right seeds and nurture them for weeks or months before we even see the shoots, let alone the beautiful flower! So many of us are looking for instant gratification and immediate reward. That really isn’t the way to look at a long-term, sustainable business. Invest in making yourself a better business owner. Schedule time to study and improve in every aspect of your business and life. Commit to and invest in coming to suitable events and understand the return on investment this gives you. It should always be far greater than what you pay in time, money and the inconvenience of travel! It often takes just one contact or one idea to totally change your business forever. More importantly, if you are not bettering yourself and you don’t believe in your abilities, then why on earth would you expect a prospective customer to choose you over the competition? ContFF..

One of the keys to success is to study and learn what successful businesses are doing and understanding how you can learn from them. Networking at our events is a key benefit that you’ll only gain by attending. It astounds me how many so-called professionals are just interested in the lowest price, irrespective of where it comes from or the damage it may do to an industry they apparently love! It also astounds me how little knowledge they have about an industry they want to make their living out of. If you do not understand the history, as to how we got to this point, then you cannot truly understand where it is today, or hope to anticipate where it is going. Another crucial key to success is learning to sell. Being an outstanding balloon artist is no guarantee to success, in fact I have seen many fail over the years. It’s never because they weren’t good enough, it was always because they didn’t believe in their ability or market themselves well enough, nor were they adaptable to ever changing situations. We need to continually learn and evolve. So, what’s it going to be? Are you waiting for Santa or are you going to take control of your own success and achievements?? You are currently part of a focused member association with a strong committee and a great group of members keen to help each other grow. How you use this incredible unique opportunity is really up to you. I really look forward to seeing you in NovemberF.. George Oustayiannis Proud Chairman Of NABAS and Director Of GO International. George can be contacted via NABAS or by email: george@nabas.co.uk or by calling : 01438 745746.

AGM & TRAINING DAY REVIEW A DELEGATES EXPERIENCE Balloon Magic This is the photo that started my business - I gave my son a Balloon twisting kit for Christmas; nine months later we had registered the business. Based in Jersey Channel Islands, there is one other balloon twister who does a lot of corporate work. Not feeling I had the confidence to do that I opted for kiddies fun parties and after eight months someone said to me I would be good at Event decorating. Two years later, after numerous you tube videos and a crossroads in the business - we were being successful but we could do more and I needed the knowledge for that to happenF I joined the NABAS facebook page, BUT, it was a year later when the page became more than just a site to post photos (credit to George) It changed everything, a group of people with knowledge in every field of decorating, and unlimited access all willing to help and share - it became my number one go to page. I couldn’t attend the W ilmslow training session and was so disappointed but as soon as the AGM was mentioned I was there. I booked my flights and hotel, holidays in work, hubby’s holidays in work and was on my way. Meeting some of the NABAS members the night before the AGM for me was extra special, a relaxed atmosphere with people chatting about their own businesses and of course our delightful customers, their expectations, customer service and anticipation of the following day. The training was superb, the teachers impressive, it was just something you can’t experience from any video or download, conversations with Matt about my forthcoming 3ft jobs, ( the Dacron worked well thank you) to learning the size of tissue paper for a tassle tail , thank you Claire. Mike’s quick link class was phenomenal and once you know the tricks it’s so easy (only one twist clockwise for a duplet). I did consider the cost involved before I went but it way exceeded my expectations and has given me the hunger to create more at home, the cost I know I can recoup in my designs, It’s marketing and if we don’t invest in the training / knowledge then how can we invest more into the business. My holidays are already booked for the 30 th Anniversary in November from work, my husband’s holidays already booked to cover the childcare, flights booked, hotel booked. Meetings at Birmingham airport arranged on arrival (see you there Michelle). I just can’t wait to meet not only the fantastic NABAS trainers again but also the guest trainer’s. NABAS 30th Anniversary Event NABAS 30th Anniversary Event – 26th and 27th November 2017 So, NABAS has been established 30 years, 30 years of watching this fledgling industry grow into the huge professional, must-have addition to parties, events, promotions and occasions. We are not only wanting to celebrate this massive achievement and look towards the future successes of all our members, we are also wanting to highlight how much amazing talent there is within and around us right now in 2017. Where is it being held? The state-of-the-art Slate Conference Centre at Warwick University in Coventry, SV4 7SH.

Please don’t be put off (as I initially was) by the thought of going back to Uni – the business area is separate to the main University buildings and as such you won’t be seeing many grungy young adults loitering around enjoying themselves under the guise of working hard! Also, if the thought of staying in student halls fills you with dread then cast all thoughts of shared toilets and lumpy single beds out of your mind – think more 4* hotel room with en-suite facilities and all mod-cons including Freeview TV, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities, iron and ironing-board, towels, toiletriesFThe accommodation in Radcliffe is peaceful and finished to a high standard and you can even choose your fave pillow type! Radcliffe is currently undergoing a £6.5million refurbishment which will be completed in for NABAS to descend.

September – just in time

Plenty of parking on site, free reliable Wi-Fi plus a choice of continental or full-English breakfast on Monday morning – just what will be needed after the Gala Awards Celebration the night before!

The Training: The format of the Event is that there will be 3 x 3 hour classes on the Sunday morning 9.30am til 12.30pm with a break for lunch then a further 3 x 3 hour classes on the Sunday afternoon 1.30pm til 4.30pm. These Sunday classes will be hands-on creating the décor for the Gala Awards Celebrations later that evening. We are going ALL OUT and WOW with these so be prepared for a lot of fun and new techniques. This format is repeated on the Monday with a mix of masterclasses and hand-on classes.

NABAS 30th Anniversary Event We have a brilliant line-up of international and home-grown Instructors to inspire you and make your balloon creations even more unique and amazing. Our list of instructors is continually growing, but to give you all a sneak preview of the headliners, we’re very proud to announce that: From The Netherlands we have Guido Verhoef whose large sculpture, linking balloons work is truly awe-inspiring:

From Spain we have the amazingly talented Romina Finale – hand painted balloon characters using distortion techniques and twisting are her forte but her bubbles and organic creations are just stunning too:

From England we have the quick hands of talented Twister, Rob Driscoll – Rob has been involved in balloon twisting for many years and his balloon animals are just superbly detailed – his attention to detail is second to none:

Also from England we have Chris Horne who has been in the industry for over 20 years and is currently responsible for the amazing Anagram balloon ideas and inspirational designs for Amscan Decorator:

NABAS 30th Anniversary Event The Competition: We are running three competitions at the event, the three categories are: Deliverable Bouquet – theme “Happy Birthday” Deliverable Sculpture – theme “open” Centrepiece – theme “Under The Sea” Full competition rules will follow, but you really don’t want to miss entering all three categories! The overall winner combining all scores will win a ticket to the World Balloon Convention in San Diego in 2018, plus flights, accommodation and $500 spending money. There are also prizes available plus awards and the chance to be an “Award Winning” balloon decorator. These entries should be brought with you ready for judging from 2pm on Sunday. The Gala Awards Ceremony: Okay it’s just a BIG party and a great excuse to all let our hair down and network with other balloonies. Who better to understand your little foibles and frustrations than other balloon decorators from all over the UK. Networking in such a fun industry is a wonderful way to expand your support systems and put faces to names. The award-winning catering team at The Slate will be providing us with a fabulous meal, there will be drinking and dancing, plus awards, live music and entertainment, with the added bonus of your bedrooms being just across the road outside. So, if you haven’t already booked and started paying your monthly instalments then why not? This is going to be one of a kind and you really don’t want to miss out. The cost of the two day event is a tax-deductible business expense and the knowledge you’ll learn will reap rewards far greater than the cost. If you have ANY questions about this spectacular event, please contact one of the committee or the ladies in the NABAS officeFF..F.See you there! Paula Ardron-Gemmell, Pink Tree Parties

NABAS 30th Anniversary Event - Instructor Bio’s Rob Driscoll Working 9 to 5 in an office was never an option for The Bowtie Balloon Guy. Based in the south coast of England, in Hampshire, Rob started his working life as a cabinet-maker, but it wasn't long before Rob knew that that was not the life for him. So he threw in the towel – and utilising his creativity, passions and skills, turned to his true calling – to entertain. Using one of his passions – magic – Rob built up a reputation as one of the leading children’s entertainers as Robbie the Wizard. Catering for parties for children of all ages, demand grew and all the local children wanted Robbie the Wizard at their party. In more recent times, Rob has become known as The Bowtie Balloon Guy, and has become the “go-to-guy” for parties and events requiring balloon sculptures. Why “bowtie”? Because he has a passion for bowties! If you ever get the chance to see him in action, he’s sure to be sporting one of his wide collections. Building up a catalogue of unique, bespoke and original balloon models second to none, Rob has had the privilege of lecturing at various events across Europe, as well as being commissioned to create one-of-a-kind balloon models for specialist events. His passion for creating balloon sculptures led him to complete a number of personal challenges, including “365 Days of Balloons”, where he created a new, unique model every day for a year, posting the results on social media. He is currently working on “Twisted Cinema”, where he recreates famous movie posters using balloon models. You can follow his work on: Facebook www.facebook.com/mydailyballoon.com; Twitter www.twitter.com/magirob; Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/magirob/ But that’s not all! Rob is also one half of the magic double act, The Vox Brothers, who bring a modern twist to classic magic routines and effects to the more corporate clientele. The Vox Brothers www.voxbrothers.co.uk/ For 20+ years Rob has worked all over the world, honing his skills, performing magic, twisting balloons and creating new sculptures, and has become one of the most sought after and premier performers around. Rob Driscoll is a balloon modeller, a wizard, a Vox Brother, a photographer, a magician, but above all, an entertainer.

Romina Finale I started a balloon decoration in 2010 in Italy. My curiosity for this art led me to attend different training courses during which I learned many techniques. In 2013 I arrived in Spain where I arranged my first balloon course in March of 2014. In 2014, in Barcelona, I opened Vittoria Balloons, decoration and balloons shop. During this year I continued with the training in Spain, and traveled for the first time to Russia, to the Moscow Festival. In November 2014 together with colleagues from Spain, Italy and France we made one of the first great sculptures created together, it was called “Little Red Riding Hood”. In 2015 I traveled as an instructor to the United States, Mexico, and Paris. In February 2015 I organized in Barcelona “Reinventing Never Again”, a seminar that becomes the front door of CEBA 2016. Supported “Aire Andaluz”,the sculpture made by professionals from Spain, Italy and France. I traveled to Italy and Guadeloupe supporting decorations of large surfaces. I attended the “Moscow Festival” and the “Sunny Twist” in France. I won the Award for Excellence in “Power Deco Convention” (California, USA), recognition granted to Spanish Speaking professionals. I arranged my first art exhibition in Andorra. In March 2017 during the International Convention CEBA 2017 (Barcelona) we made with other artists big sculptures. In April 2017 I was in Shanghai, China where i teached some of my techniques. California for teaching.

In july 2017 I will return to

I have a lot of work in my store, so unfortunately I can't partecipate in all projects and courses! I would like to do it!

NABAS 30th Anniversary Event - Instructor Bio’s Chris Horne After more than 20 years running his own highly successful Floristry, Balloon and Party business, during which time he won a wealth of balloon decorating and floristry competitions worldwide, Chris joined Amscan International in October 2004. He originally joined the company to complete the development of a new range of latex Decorator balloons (launched under the Anagram brand) on which he had been working as a consultant since mid 2003. Now, as International Creative Projects Manager, he works full time on the further development and promotion of this and other lines, and is currently heading up an Educational Marketing programme to encourage and assist Amscan customers and partners in maximising the potential of the vast range of balloon and associated products offered by the company. His particular area of interest and expertise is in the combination of Latex, Foil and decorative products. The revolutionary range of foil decorator Curve and Crescent shapes was conceived and developed by Chris, and became the hot new introduction for 2008. 2009 saw unprecedented sales growth in these balloons and Chris is now responsible for promoting and demonstrating them worldwide. He works closely with Anagram’s Product Development teams in the UK and the US, and has been instrumental in the development of the 6-point stars, decorator panels and Cubez, Diamondz and Orbz. Galleries of his work and other inspirational material can be found at www.flickr.com/amscandecorator .

Guido Verhoef Guido Verhoef (the Netherlands) followed the European School for Performing Arts and has been actively involved in the balloon industry since 1991 as an artist, designer, teacher and producer of large scale balloon projects and shows. As producer he directed the first international balloon fashion shows of Europe (2006 Belgium), Asia (2007 China) and the USA (2008 Las Vegas). Among the many rewards he received the title European Balloon Artist of the Year, first places at Large sculpture competitions in Europe and the USA and two Life Time Achievement awards for his dedication to the International Balloon Industry. Guido has always been interested in combining art forms and seeking the collaboration with various artists, choreographers, musicians and directors. Together with world champion Bodypainter Bella Volen they are the creative founders of Paintloons, where balloons are mixed with fine art and body paint. With sculpture artist Hester Oerlemans he worked in Berlin and Arnhem on several of her projects like "Blobs" and "designer chairs" exhibited in various art exhibitions throughout the Netherlands and Germany. In 2016 Guido worked in 5 continents and organised the largest fundraiser in the balloon industry with over 30 participating countries creating balloon rhino’s to raise awareness against rhino poaching. As a signature piece a 16 x 9 meter big Rhino was built in South Africa. In Israel a 26 meter high Dove of Freedom sculpture was built at 40 minutes from the Syrian border. In Xiamen China Guido organized the World Balloon Art Festival bringing in 48 international artists. Together with local balloon artists and volunteers they created the first balloon festival week with daily balloon shows, a daily balloon parade and a Guinness World Record balloon exhibition using a record of 365.000 balloons and attracting 350.000 visitors. In the past 25 years he has produced 13 workshop DVD’s, over 230 shows for Dutch National Television and more than 4500 shows and performances in 5 continents. His passion is to share happiness with his art form and inspire others to use their creativity by creating large sculptures and international creative projects in cooperation with local artists.

The Accidental Balloonist My journey began one warm July day 2016. I had been wondering for some time, once my twelve year old son had suddenly overnight become a young man, what I should do next with my new found freedom? I had always worked within museums and galleries and loved working within a creative environment. I had always enjoyed gardening and thought Floristry may tick all the boxes. The work needed to offer flexible working hours and preferably working from home. I was aware that Capel Manor offered a number of floristry courses and offered taster days; I registered immediately, but unfortunately I was unable to make the taster day for floristry but was offered a balloon artistry taster morning. I attended and the rest is history Capel Manor is a wonderful place set in over 30 acres in Enfield, North London. It is an oasis of calm within a bustling city. It offers a smorgasbord of courses including, horticulture, animal husbandry, saddlery, tree surgery, floristry and finally the only college in the country offering balloon artistry. Angie George the course leader and NABAS committee member, is a wonderful teacher. Attending half a day a week for three terms students work towards NABAS level 1 & 2 linked with an art and design qualification. Building a portfolio of designs that could be used when we started trading was an important element of the course. Students are taught the full range of balloon artistry techniques including health and safety and most important how to price. Angie provides support and encouragement to all her students and her patience shows no end, particularly when teaching distortion techniques! Our group was made up of a small group of seven students from diverse backgrounds, ages and professions. We have become a close knit group offering support through our What's App group, posting images and offering each other problem solving advice. If one of us was unable to attend a session, notes and images of that week’s lesson are posted. The course is, as you would expect, very hands on, working both individually and part of a team. We have all come a long way from our early sessions learning how to tie balloons correctly and making simple displays to researching and installing our final end of year displays which was the highlight of the course. The brief being to research and produce a display to be placed in the entrance foyer of a travel fair, specialising in marriages both domestically and overseas. Every student interpreted the brief differently resulting in no two displays being the same. Capel Manor has also hosted several NABAS courses organised by Angie with the help of other NABAS committee members. I intend to return to Capel in September to start NABAS Level 3. I would thoroughly recommend the course both to beginners like myself and to those looking to advance their skill set. Ruth Lederman, Ruth’s Balloons Capel Manor Balloon Students 2016/17
