1.4. PROJECT DETAILS PROJECT BRIEF AND CONCEPT
CLIENT AND STAKEHOLDERS
Interfaith and Welfare Centre
The client of this project is DBKL, malaysia. They are in charge of the city of Kuala Lumpur and provide, manage and maintain public buildings around KL.
The design brief is to create a space of order in defiance to the chaos on the site which is located in Pasar Seni, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The chaos on the site is present due to the high density and circulation of people and vehicles, the varying building features and the noise all around. The building will therefore provide a space of order and harmony for the people to get away from this chaotic urban life. BRIEF - The building must not block the view of the Central Market which is a historical landmark - The calm spaces needs to be sound proofed against the noise on the site. - As much as vegetation must be used in the design. - The building needs to mostly use natural light and natural ventilation - It needs to relate to the River Of Life project
USERS GROUP The main user of the building will be the general public located nearby the site. This includes traders, workers, students, local visitors, tourists and foreign migrants. Therefore the building has to be suitable for this diverse user groups. CLIENT'S OBJECTIVE
Ministry of Urban wellbeing, housing and local government. They are in charge of implemanting programmes and activities to improve the quality of life of urban citizens. They will be supporting the project. The project will be funded by the government of Malaysia.

1. To improve the health (mental and physical) of people around the site, especially the workers and students. 2. To provide a comfortable relaxation space for surrounding students and office workers. 3. To bring together the diverse communities from around the site 4. To create a healthier urban place through the use of greeneries and landscaping.
1.0. INTRODUCTION 1.1. SITE ANALYSIS
1.2. S.W.O.T ANALYSIS
1.3. PESTEL ANALYSIS
SITE INTRODUCTION
STRENGTH: - The site is located in a very dense and active area - The high-rises on the west side provides shade to the site.
POLITICAL: Kuala Lumpur is administred by the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. It consists of the mayor and 15 members of the city advisory boards which operates under the Ministry of Federal Territories.
The site is located right in front of the Central Market in Pasar seni, Kuala lumpur, Malaysia. The development of this area started during the tin mining industry in Malaysia (circa 1857). Wet markets were built to cater to the community needs. Around 1953, the Central Market was renovated into a cultural market. This area is well known for its cultural significance and is among the famous tourist destinations in Kuala Lumpur. It is a mostly commercial area from the central market to the Petaling street where the flee market is located. Surrounding the site, there are a diverse architecture style; from the vernacular shophouses, the Art-Deco Central market, Islamic architecture and modernist highrises.
CENTRAL MARKET
WEAKNESS - Lack of vegetation on the site and on the surrounding. - Noise due to the traffic in front of the site and the LRT track besides it. OPPORTUNITY - There are bus stops, a bus station and an LRT station nearby the site. - There is a diverse user group on the site; Traders, workers, students, local visitors, tourists and foreign migrants - The Klang river is situated besides the site THREAT - Heavy traffic during peak hours along the road facing the site -Lack of parking spaces
ECONOMICAL: Kuala Lumpur is the centre for economic and business related activities which include finance, insurance, real estate, media and the arts of Malaysia. SOCIOLOGICAL: Kuala Lumpur has a population of 1.76 million. The major religion is Islam followed by Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and others. The city is quite active with workers, traders, students, local visitors and tourists. TECHNOLOGY: Kuala Lumpur is the most advance region when it comes to technology in Malaysia. This is mostly found in the transportation system; LRT, MRT, bus, KTM and more ENVIRONMENTAL: Air pollution is an issue in Kuala Lumpur mostly due to the high density of vehicles.


LEGAL: The building planning follows the UBBL where there is the need for 3m setback from the road and 6m setback from other buildings
1.0. DESIGN SUITABILITY DESIGN The concept is to have different layers of spaces in the building through which there will be a transition of chaotic exterior to a more ordered interior. Therefore the designed is focused on the journey through the spaces where the user, coming from a chaotic urban city, goes through the different layers until the main programme which is the most ordered and harmonious space. This transition makes the journey more subtle and makes the exterior of the building fit well in the context. The design should not block the view of the central market and keep the original pedestrian circulations on the existing site.

1.3. PROPOSED PROGRAMME
1.3. BUILDING FEATURES
Interfaith and Welfare Centre The public around the site is quite diverse, in terms of culture and religion. This led to the proposal of spaces for praying and meditation to fit in the brief of having a space of order and harmony.
GREEN SPACES The design features a green landscape on the site, green pockets in between the building blocks and roof gardens. This enlivens the urban city making it feel healthier and more welcoming. It also provides shading on the site for the public .
The 3 major religions in Malaysia is Islam, Buddhism and Christianity. Therefore large praying spaces for the 3 different religion is provided. Each praying space is able to accommodate around 200-300 people.
HARMONIOUS SPACES The interior spaces that will be used for praying/ meditation are quiet spaces. The noise coming from around the site is absorbed by the vegetation, the building's insulated wall and facade skin structure.
There are two different types of mediation space. One is more open and public while the other is more closed so as to provide more privacy to the user.
NATURAL VENTILATION The building uses mostly natural ventilation through cross and stack ventilation system. It makes use of the wind blowing through the site. The facade skin allows ventilation while insulating the noise.
The library and reading space is also proposed in the design. Reading helps to calm the mind as a contrast to the chaos of the site. It also serves the purpose of providing knowledge.
SUNLIGHT CONTROL The building is oriented so that the sunlight is casted only on the smallest facade area. It also features use of shading devices and shading facades at openings. This prevents the building from heating up.

1.3. SUCCESS CRITERIA A successful project is one that is able to convince and satisfy the client in terms of design and programmes. The key performance of the project is determined by the success criteria of the cost, time, scope and quality of the project.
COST The project cost is estimated and has a better success criteria if the end cost doesn't exceed the estimate. The cost includes pre-construction, construction and operation cost. Careful choice of construction materials can reduce cost while maintaining quality. The maximum use of passive ventilation and shading also reduce operation cost. SCOPE All the scope need to be fulfilled until the end of the project. This includes the client's brief, objective and goals.
PROJECT MANAGER GOAL GOALS - To satisfy client's brief and objective during the project. - The project should fulfill the triple constraints (time, cost, scope) so as to be successful with good quality. - Fulfill all laws and regulations.
COST Built up area: 2200 m2 (23680.6 sq.ft.)
PROJECT SUCCESS QUALITY The project should fulfill the brief of the client and be able to achieve the intention of the architect. A good workmanship during consruction is important to avoid any mistakes that can affect the building's performance. The building will need to be sustainable and environment friendly so as to reach a Silver award GBI rating. TIME An estimated time is given to the client and is planned so that there is no delay during the project. This is done using a Gantt chart. The project starts on 03/07/2017 and end on 09/08/2018.
SHORT TERM - Fulfilling the client's brief - Achieving functional performance and technical specifications. MEDIUM TERM - Achieve intended effect on the health of users - Bringing together the diverse community LONG TERM - Sustaining human life in relation to the River Of Life project - Becoming an interfaith hub in Kuala lumpur
