about architecture... this portfolio includes, a variety of individual/ group projects i have designed over the 5 years of me studying architecture. each project has a completely different approach and design philosophy. thus, each project have a totally different and unique outcome. as for me, i believe in new beginnings, new perspectives, and new approaches. and the beauty about architecture is that it lets you think different each time. it gives you a chance to design as a completely different person, a chance to set the rules, and a chance to defy the rules. so, during the fIVE years of my architecture program, I insisted on challenging myself every single time to come up with a brand new idea and never be afraid of breaking the rules.

“One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again. – Renzo Piano

re-inventing the new architecture language of the city should capture the essence of the city and its people. as for the case of fowah, a forgotten city in egypt’s delta was once considered a global catalyst for textile industry, the essence of the city lies inbetween the finger tips of the weavers who created an interwoven culture that added fowah to the global textile map.

FIRST FEZ FACTORY IN EGYPT BUILT IN FOWAH

EVOLUTION OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY STARTED AS FOWAH WAS CONSIDERED A TRANSPORT HUB

CHANGING THE EGYPTIAN MILITARY UNIFORM BY MUHAMMED ALI BASHA

Fowah used export its textiles to different cities, the kilim production had a global influence ranging from china to Europe, especially through the silk road that used to connect different cities through textile trade.

the machine vs the hand “The human brain could have evolved as a consequences of the increase in tool use” - Sherwood Washburn, anthropologist A philosophical approach that explains how within our era of globalization and industrialization we started to undervalue the creative capacity of the human body and their hand. It shows the importance of the hands’ role in evolution of the human skills, intelligence and conceptual capacity, trying to restore such importance in our existential knowledge to appreciate what a human hand can do

the importance of the touch The tool is an extension to the hand of a craftsman Touching Surfaces, sensing their materiality and texture brings in a form of intimacy between the subject and the object

Embodied Experience Through The Primacy of Haptic Realm The primacy of a haptic realm in a grounded experienced is defended by how the ‘body image is informed from haptic and orienting experiences early in life’. Our visual images are developed later on and depend on primal, haptically acquired experiences.

CONCEPT: Rebranding Kilim industry by empowering the hand and enhancing creativity through manifesting a rhythmic interwoven spatial language that integrates the process of weaving with social interaction Integrating the language of the kilim with the architectural style of the building

Giving a statement that although kilim could be updated, the essence of the craft that it is handmade

Kilim used as canopies providing shade for open spaces and courtyards

Looms used as partitions show the process of kilim until it is finished and turned into an art work it is handmade

Exhibiting the process of kilim making instead of only the end product

INDULGENT RHYTHMS WHICH GIVES A SMOOTH TRANSITIONAL SPATIAL QUALITY AND THUS, CREATING A MORE RELAXING EXPERIENCE.

EQUAL EMPHASIS ON THE VERTICAL WARP AND HORIZONTAL WEFT. GIVES A SENSE OF TRANSPARENCY

EMPHASIS IS ONLY ON THE HORIZONTAL WEFT. THE VERTICAL WARP BECOMES ONLY STRUCTURE AND NOT PART OF THE DESIGN.

DIAGONAL SLITS CREATED FROM HORIZONTAL STITCHES TURNING AROUND ALTERNATING WARP THREADS. CREATING MORE BOLD DESIGNS SHOWING THE CONTRAST OF TWO COLORS.

EVOLVED TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM OF SLITS WEAKENING THE STRUCTURE. WEFTS START TO INTERLOCK WITH EACH OTHER. CREATES MORE BLURRED DESIGNS.

HAS A ROUGH APPEARANCE. EXTRA WEFTS ARE WRAPED AROUND THE WARPS USUALLY IN RATIO; 2:1- 3:1 - 5:1. THE ONLY TECHNIQUE THAT RESEMBLES CORDING AND RUNS PARALLEL TO THE WARPS

form generation

Using the basic weaving technique as the main grid for the form generation

Distorting the orthogonal grid and disrupting the rhythm in order to shift the focus to the main elements of the building; the market and the exhibition wings. Distoring the exhibition vertically in order to interweave several levels throughout the building, creating a wholestic experience that formulate the interlacing between different functions

CREATING VOID/OPEN SPACES WITHIN THE PLAZA FLOOR IN ORDER TO RESPOND TO THE SOCIAL RHYTHM WITHIN THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT

Changing The building height in order to responds to the vertical rhythm within the surrounding context
