Introduction Scientists have long discovered that “stress pill”, alas, does not exist. Research has shown that students are no less stressed than other groups of people and that can have an effect on their well-being, behavior, mental health, studies and daily life. A huge amount of studies, personal problems, relationships and much more affect people’s well-being and mental health . The Students’ Anti Stress Center Angel has been created to help students deal with stress. This center is not aimed to be a clinic, but rather an engaging place to relax with different activities, calm down, even have some fun and put your thoughts in order. Collaboration with a brand such as Instagram will help to achieve the fun factor in the project and attract students to the center.

Project Objective
ANTI- STRESS CENTER for students
Other than therapy, the lesser serious activities that is common way to de-stess are going to a spa, doing yoga exercises, playing sports, video games, reading, eating, watching movies & many more as it varies to each individual. The anti-stress center will include active (GF) & passive (basement) spaces for different type of activities that each student or group may feel more comfortable with to de-stress.
This program is aiming to create a space where students can relax and de-stress through different activities other than the normal counseling sessions, that some are not confident in attending due to the nature of how serious it seems. By creating this antistress space for students, they can feel a sense of freedom & openness, which allows the mind to feel at ease.
Project Aim To create an open plan space with various functions and fun activities for students, with the intention to help with improvement of stress levels and mental health.

Upper Street is the main shopping street of the Islington district of inner north London, and carries the A1 road. It begins at the junction of the A1 and Pentonville Road and City Road, and runs roughly northwards past Angel Underground station, then past the Business Design Centre, then splits at Islington Green (where Essex Road, formerly named Lower Street, branches off), then past the Screen on the Green cinema, the town hall, ending at Highbury & Islington tube station on Highbury corner, where the A1 carries on as Holloway Road. The southernmost 500 metres (0.31 mi), from the junction to Islington Green, also carries the historical name of Islington’s High Street.

Upper Street
Brief History
The site is at The Mall, 359 Upper Street, with facades also found at adjacent Islington High Street, Duncan Street, and Gateway arcade. It was built in 1905-6 as an electricity transformer station and tram depot, because of the electrification of trams at the beginning of the 1900s.
In 1979 the building was converted internally into an antiques market with individual retail units to the existing ground and basement floors. At one time the Antiques Market housed over 35 dealers. The mezzanine was created during this renovation to provide a restaurant.
The building was built by E.Vincent Harris of the London County council architects, with details inspired by George Dance II’s Newgate Prison.
In 2008 most of the individual retail units were empty, so site was sold by London & associated properties (LAP) to PRUIPIM and in 2009 the site was refitted into a single retail unit.
In approx. 1933 the ownership of the substation was passed to the London Passenger Transport Board but as transport evolved the trams were replaced by buses in the early 1960s, and there was no longer a requirement for the electricity substation and tram depot and the building was left derelict for nearly 20 years.
01 Project Brief
Until 2016 the site was allocated for Superdry store. From February it was redesigned for Sofa.com, which is a current occupier of the building.

Programme ANTI- STRESS CENTER for students Students are one of the groups that is highly affected by stress. Large volumes of work, deadlines, personal problems and more greatly affect our well-being and daily life. According to FORTH (fothwithlife.co.uk) statistics young adults struggle with stress over 12 days per month, on average. Stress has a longer effect on our physical and mental health. Many of the Universities provide professional medical help, but don’t have a place where students can go any time when they feel stressed. This program is aiming to create a space where students can relax and de-stress through different activities other than the normal counseling sessions, that some are not confident in attending due to the nature of how serious it seems. By creating this anti-stress space for students, they can feel a sense of freedom & openness, which allows the mind to feel at ease.

CENTER for students Fun, engaging space to relax with varieties of activities, divided into two zones with active and passive (calm) de-sress zones suitable to every taste. Activities can be changed weekly or monthly, so students can socialize, get involved and therefore relax from studies and reduce stress using facilities provided.
CLIENT, City, University of London City, University of London is main client that is aimed at investing at their students mental health and well-being providing a place to relax and destress. Also can be used by students from other universities. City, Uni of London students get earlier access and discounts. Proposed site is located 5 mins walk from the Uni Campuses.
SPONSOR 1 UCL Partners UCLPartners is a unique academic health science partnership that brings together people and organisations to transform the health and wellbeing of the population. One of their key interests of research is mental health and how to improve it. Sponsoring the project will give UCL Partners a research base on how to improve students well-being in particular.
SPONSOR Instagram is the most popular and used social media nowadays, which makes them a good candidate as the investors for the project. Also, showing interest in improving students mental health is good PR drive. It would stimulate & lure visitors, giving a FUN factor (understanding that it’s not a clinic, but a fun space to get rid of stress).

Research
NEO-Cubism* Neo Cubism is the most graphic trend we have to show you. It is full of colors and art. This particular style derives from the pioneer of the Cubist avant-garde, Pablo Picasso. With cool colors and extravagant abstract lines, this trend presents the room from multiple points of view and completely distorts the idea of perspective as we know it. There is no doubt that it is a sigh for your eyes. This trend is currently inspired by graphic geometries, figurative forms and the revolt of primary colors in abstract art. Neo cubism is a visual and almost shocking trend that keeps much of the aesthetics that we love to see about furniture. Geometric shapes like circles, rectangles and polygons can create structure and clarity. These forms are balanced and easily recognizable. They usually suggest structure, order and efficiency. Wavy lines, dynamic curves and powerful arches contrast with the more functional geometric style, creating unique, captivating objects and drawing attention to the compositions. Neo-Cubism is also distinguished by the fact that it is more minimalistic, simple, less rectangular and the colors used in this movement are often softer, lighter and pastel. Many confuse neocubist paintings with minimalism, interiors with avant-garde. Simply put, neo-cubism came to us from the merger of cubism itself and some techniques of minimalism.

ASCA Beppe Brancato’s photographps show a wide variety, as he works for many magazines, designand architecture studios with an emphasis on Interior Photography, Fashion and Advertisement in general, and love how he works with color which is the main reason we are featuring him . You see, Italian Style has a clear signature when it comes to color combining. They work often with up to three primary colors but in several and more muted shades. Interior photography by Beppe Brancato is another great example of neo-cubism interiors. Where the shapes and lines are more relaxed, yet are organized, more pastel and minimalist.

THE POTENT STYLE OF CHARLIE SCHUCK FOR BOWER When cubism and minimalism perfectly work together.
Charlie Schuck’s images are minimal but with and intensely grand look built on selected textures and surface, like sumptuous curtains, perfectly brushed carpets and mirrored elements. The restricted color tones also work to increase these highly readable and yet dramatic pictures. The palette of pinks, light and teal blues and dark greens plays a central role underlying the sophistication of the whole set, particularly in their juxtaposition to the darkness walnut surfaces and marble marquetry. The surprising presence of a beautiful peacock adds a touch of surrealism to the web and captures our full attention when we see it moving around the virtual space. The bird’s presence brings a unique and unexpected element to the series and appears as a perfect parallel to the Bower‘s work that “through a free, experimental process want to bring unique and unexpected objects into people’s lives”.

Terzo Piano designs attractive atmospheres, inspiring interiors for various material brands (Graniti Fiandre, Fondavalle, Ragno, etc) and furniture (Former, Busnelli, etc). Their wise eye makes it possible to highlight one or more products by anchoring them in a perfect universe to communicate their strengths and their advantages. Their creations are and make the trends as much as they use to stage skillfully, and give credibility or even sustainability to an object.
TERZO PIANO: Indoor Styling version 3.0 ‘Here is a brand new way of presenting trends and novelties’.
The work of Terzo Piano is one more great example of neo-cubism. Linear, using many different shapes, minimal, but bright at the same time. ‘The work for Graniti Fiandre (left bottom) is exceptional, and it is to wonder where perfection comes from: Is it always the eye of the stylist, or the 3d modeling that makes it possible to erase any irregularities? Without any doubts both, technology bringing here a way to get to the bottom of things and to master them entirely’ (Valette C., 2017). Main elements that form that unique space are: The materials, the shapes, and the colors. Perfectly co-existing and cooperating with each other they create that unusual, almost like an image atmosphere.

Alexis Christodoulou creates dream-like architectural spaces for Instagram
‘I make the spaces because I think I like the idea of going there and escaping for a while,” said Christodoulou. “They’re just extensions of my day dreams’ (Christodoulou, A., n.d.).
02 Design Concept
‘The renders he develops often feature tiled and terrazzo surfaces, bringing together indoor and outdoor spaces with water pools, arches, curved furniture and globe-like objects or circular openings. Some are animated, featuring morphing objects like vases that changes shape. His current series, called Imagined Architectural Spaces, began in January 2017. It has helped him accumulate over 30,000 followers on Instagram, where he posts as @teaaalexis’ (Winston A., 2018). Recent trends have changed and many prefer extra realistic renders, but Christodoulou’s works show that he wanted to get completely different effect, more arty, not very real. All the architectural elements are selected to create different effects with light. Despite the fact that it is all 3D renders not the real projects it gives us clear understanding of what is neo-cubism in architecture and interior design.

SHAPES Following the design strategies developed from the concept and combination of different techniques, simple geometry can be used as blocks for creating joinery and bespoke furniture. Some of basic shapes can be extruded or embedded from or into the walls creating different levels, at the same not blocking the space in the middle
LINES One of the Cubist design strategy which is unfolding the building will create a unique space when applying lines and shapes on it. It divides space into different shapes and zones, but at the same time unites it due to continuation of lines. These lines can be thick and thin to create different effect. In the current project combining cubism with minimalism will give thin lines as a result and provide better space performance for chosen programme.
SHAPES & LINES
Combining both lines and shapes will give the building more unusual look, making it to look quite simple, but arty at the same time. The lines can be used as thin leading shapes to divide zones and materials, and basic shapes can be used for creating joinery.

REFRESH RECHARGE not a clinic Providing a fun and unusual space to relax, which combines varieties of activities suitable for every taste. The space will act as an important place that will help students feel better during hard times and improve their well-being. It is important to understand that it is rather collection of activities aimed at stress relief in the aesthetic space, than a mental clinic or a spa center!! That center will also be more of an experimental project which will provide a research basis for improving mental health and building environment for students.

Interactive spaces Sensory stimuli To make space more fun and provide visitors interaction with the space and the centre, improving their mood application of interactive features can be beneficial for the project. Interactive art space to be added to the centre, where visitors can interact with the installations and objects, that will boost the mood and energy. Installations in the space can be provided by different instagram artists helping them to evolve and get known and involved, or visitors themselves during activities and workshops. That will bring fun factor to the space that will be provided by Instagram. That will also help students to socialize, interact with each other and the space. This idea also follows the idea of one of the biophiic patterns.
Interactive areas will not be limited to only one part of the building, but will be located throughout the whole space. Thus, in the basement there will be interactive floor projections and interactive lights to be installed throughout all floors. Touch them and they will turn off or on. Simple and fun!

The lines will continue from the floor to all walls on the ground floor, making the space look unique. The lines will be thin therefore not distracting the eyes. Same lines will be forming the zones. That will allow to separate the activities without the walls. Some of the lines to be repeated on all the floors.

Branding The design concept is Cubism and the intention is to make it more minimal and simple. Basic general shapes are to form the logo. Circle and square which are main shapes that are used in the building design when intersecting create the lines which represent the lines that are used in the space. Basing on that the name for the centre was simplified as well.

The colour scheme is chosen in a way to keep it simple and minimal, related to the natural environment. According to the dissertation study, colours and materials are some of the biophilic design techniques that improve mood and can help in stress relief via relating it to nature. Mostly white interior on ground floor will provide bright space for active tasks, and darker green area in the basement will create more muffled atmosphere that sets up for rest. Strokes of deep coral together with the shapes will make it outstanding from other buildings’ interior.

Replacing the roof will allow more natural light into the space therefore making it more bright and light. To make the concept stronger the decision was made to create a wow factor that will represent cubist idea. That will be represented through the creating of the hanging pedant LED lights. When entering the space they look massive blocks floating in the middle. But when coming closer it can be seen that they are actually hollow inside and have only the frame, which automatically make them look lighter. Using deep coral colour will give an extra brightness to the design and will attract the eye.

Reception Reception. Quite simple white and green design of the reception reflects the whole design of the space with main colours and simple cubist shapes. Curved counter surface to be repeated and reflected in some other areas of the building. As the idea is to take off the shoes there is drawer with warm socks and other small items that visitors might need in the centre if they would like to purchase some for a small fee. There are also smart screens that show the whole area, activities provided where visitors can sign up, book individual consultation or individual pot in the basement.

Coffee Bar There are two parts of a bar: lower and higher. Both sides of a bar repeat the shape of the lines from the floor forming two triangles. On the lower side of a bar there are two screens that can be used before going down or up the stairs to another areas. Lower bar provides a space for disabled people, as chairs are not fixed and can be moved aside. Two parts of the wall is remained uncovered and bricks to be re-glazed showing the original materials of the building. Bar counters tops are covered with oak veneers and sides are covered with curved Meganite tiles. The top of the lower bar is made with artificial grass . The colours are white, beige and pastel green that reflect the whole atmosphere of the centre. The bar area is located near existing exit so coffee and other supplies can be delivered from there. Windows are remain existing with frames painted white. The lights above both bar counters reflect the shape driven by the lines as well. There are some plants hanging from the horizontal beam bringing the nature in the space applying biophilic design techniques.

Interactive art space Interactive art space is located at the very end of the building near disabled lift in the corner. This location is stimulating visitors to go through all the space observing all the areas. There is a permanent interior facade made out of felt with interactive lights. The area is deigned in a way to provide space for art exhibitions and installations bringing the fun factor to the space. Installations are to be interactive for visitors to get in contact with it, touch, sit, observe, take pictures etc, which will provide visitors positive changes in mood and encourage them to use the space, its facilities and come for workshops and activities. This space as well as the whole centre to be featured by Instagram, creating a feeling of unusual and fun place to relax, rather than a mental institution. Installations can be provided by Instagram artists or created by visitors during the workshops.

Sand therapy Basement is represented with the same color scheme as ground floor, but overall atmosphere is darker with muffled light as it is more of a quiet and passive relaxation area. There are two screens located near the staircase where individual pot or individual consultation can be booked. Sand therapy with the seating, way to the lift (where all other floors can be accessed), WCs, storage and fire exit. Sand therapy to be made out of the same materials as soft ball pool on GF. Lines on the floor in the basement repeat some lines from the GF. Floor materials the same, white bolon hexagon tiles, beige carpet and green carpet in addition. Individual pots to be separated from the staircase and other areas with gold chain curved curtain partition. Lights to be the same as in the main area to give full look to the space and additionally merge all levels of the building together.

Individual relaxation pots Main relaxation area with individual pots to be darker with muffled light to provide relaxation atmosphere in the area. There are total eleven individual pots. As they are not fixed to the floor the position can be re-organized. Through this area pillow fight room, light therapy and individual consultation room can be accessed which are located at the back of the basement. There will be projectors installed on the ceiling to create projections of the grass when people are waling through the space. Therefore, due to visual projection and soft green carper there will be feeling of waling on the grass.
Individual pots to be fully made out of felt to create warm and soft feeling. Milky white on the outside and pastel yellow on the inside. The same material as used for interior facade in the interactive art space. Intended for individual use. To relax, sleep, read a book etc. The shape and construction in designed in a way that the walls can be opened and closed around the perimeter. So person inside can either open or fully isolate. There is an opening at the very top to provide some natural ventilation. LED light will be also installed around the top hole perimeter. There also will be some plugs to charge personal devices. Existing ventilation grills to remain existing and uncovered. LED lights on the floors and walls are representing the idea of lines moving from the floor to the walls and repest the shape og woooden cladding on the GF.

Sitting area Sitting area Passing by individual relaxation pots there is a quiet sitting area to chill or wait for friends or individual consultation. The furniture is the same as on the GF, but totally green. Sitting area is also separated from the main area with metal chain gold partition, which is zoning a space but creates a semitransparent look. As pillow fight room is located right behind the wall and might be quite noisy, it will be insulated on both sides to minimise the noise coming from the room. Insulation wall to be repeating the same shape as the wall near the staircase and texture in the bar and main reception on GF.

Pillow fight, Light therapy & Individual consultation rooms Pillow fight room
Light therapy room
Pillow fight room is the most fun space in the area and place to actively relieve stress or anger alone or with your friends. The floor, walls, and ceiling is fully covered with super soft pillows, so visitors can lye down on it, jump etc, even if they hit the walls they will be soft and therefore safe.
Light therapy is one of the sensory therapy that helps to relax. This room will be simply white with bean bags, which visitors can use or just sit on the floor. Varieties of light projections can be used in a room starting with natural landscapes ending up with art projections. That can be controlled from the room itself and also from the reception.
Individual consultation room This room is aimed to provide professional help for those who need to talk with specialist, that can be also done anonymously.

Design Report
Solar control glass Solar control glass is a hi-tech product developed by the glass industry to allow sunlight to pass through a window or façade while radiating and reflecting away a large degree of the sun’s heat. The indoor space stays bright and much cooler than would be the case if normal glass were used. Solar control glass is not necessarily coloured or mirrored glass, although such finishes can be applied for aesthetic purposes if desired. It incorporates invisible layers of special materials on the glass which have the dual effect of allowing sunlight in, while repelling solar heat. Solar control glass units are typically doubleglazed, which means they also insulate well. Solar control is a key issue in terms of energy saving: In hot conditions, or for buildings with high internal loads, it is used to minimise solar heat gain by rejecting solar radiation and help control glare In more temperate conditions it can be used to balance solar control with high levels of natural light.

D r a w i n g T i t l e: GA-CU-E-M-05 Close-up Mezzanine E
Mezzanine sitting is intended to provide extra chilling zone away from main area and is supposed to be a huge soft surface that can be used by all visitors including disabled people. The access is provided by lift to all areas including mezzanine. There is a special parking slot for wheelchairs. Whole floor and all seating area to be covered in corn fabric, environmentally friendly material based on cellulose derived from corn starch. It is durable flexible and not wrinkling. To be designed as a terrain to represent natural landscape.
NS.
Balustrade designed in a way to represent green wall located at the soft ball pool area with green wavy branches and same interactive lights. They will prevent people from coming close to a balustrade, and also people can touch them to turn on or off when passing by.

03 Step sitting area
This area is located near entrance and provides individual seating. Can be used for relaxing or varieties of talks and presentations.
The shape of a bar is designed accordingly to concept lines. Located in the centre of the building and has two parts: higher and lower. Second one can be used by visitors with disabilities.
Located between main area and interactive art space. Provides different levels of sitting from where all other areas can be observed.

GF is bright and light space intended to provide active relaxation. Rectangle lamp is floating above. Mezzanine follows same shape as the concept line.
This floor is designed to be one whole soft sitting area as a huge pillow representing natural landscape.

09 Individual relaxation pots
10 Staircase
Basement is darker, quiet area intended on providing passive relaxation. Sand therapy is one of the areas where visitors can reduce stress playing with sand and light.
Central area of the basement provides individual relaxation. Pots are made out of soft beige felt that provides great sound insulation. Grass like projection to be translated on the floor, which creates a feeling of walking on the grass.
When entering the basement staircase is divided from the main area with metal chain curtain partition. It separates zones, but creates a half translucent atmosphere, therefore not obstructing the view too much.

Concept models Same principle was applied for next concept model which is intended to show main lines extracted from the painting (process of extracting was shown on previous page) to see how they relate to each other and to a space as a whole. Similar to previous model it cam be folded to see how the lines will be continuing from floor to walls
Applying Salvador Dali’s Stereoscopic Painting to a floor plan. The model is divided into three parts, two of which are symbolizing walls. It can be folded to see how shapes and lines will continue from floor to the walls

Third model is more detailed showing the position of lines in the space in relation not only to each other and all of the surfaces but also to windows and all curved surfaces (as walls are not one big strait walls, but they have some deepening s). It is also aimed to show how lines will intersect windows, columns, doors etc. Model at the bottom is aimed to show construction of mezzanine floor and roof angles developed from three angles idea.
Clay test model of mezzanine terrain sitting area. Walkway to be located in the middle and sides to be soft seating, therefore the terrain will always change.

Test models
Extra walls to be constructed in a way that opens up an entrance and welcoming the visitors into the space. At the same time that will provide merging between the old historical facade and modern cubist interior.

Testing different patterns and structures for individual pots insulation. As the whole thing will be made out of felt which is quite flexible it is needed to understand what is the best option for it. Two different structures have been tested: honeycombs and classic insulation structure. The first one provides more thick structure, the second more flexible, which is crucial factor for closing and opening the walls of the pot.

Critical design reflection Programme
Working with the site
As the problem of stress among students is taking on more severe scale, I wanted to make a special space for students to simply get distracted and relax. The idea was made to work around it in a different way rather than usual spa centers on mental clinics. Taking a survey helped me a lot to understand what students want and how they want it to be. It also has helped me to create different zones and activities, at the same time i understood that there is no such thing as 'too many sitting spaces'. The challenging part was to work it with the concept and the building together that will make all the aspect one whole thing. However, i think i have achieved the balance between all with applying some techniques to biophilia which reflects the whole idea of the chosen programme toward improving mental health and stress rates, also making the space to look warm and welcoming.
During the concept and design development I found challenging to work with that kind of building due to its narrow and long shape. The main problems were in creating staircase and positioning is in the building in a way that not blocks already narrow space, and trying to make it as compact as possible. Also, while designing the mezzanine, due to the existing slanted ceiling and the beam halfway through it was hard to shape the staircase that will work with the existing structure in the area i was proposing it. But further later, i found the solution for this and all these problems were solved. At the same time listed walls and facade had to be preserved and working with the concept, the solution was found for that as well: covering some walls and leaving some hirtorical details, showing the difference between old classic and new.
Clarification of Concept During the design development process, I found out that design concept is needed to be taken further than just lines to fully reflect the idea. It was challenging to combine techniques that were proposed to work together and make sense. But working on this further the design went more toward neo-cubism. It has developed from plain sharp surfaces into more soft biophilic, but at the same time quite simple and minimal space. I am glad that all of that actually resulted the space to look and feel quite minimal but 'full'/finished at the same time with no blank areas.
10 Evaluation
Design Report
Evaluation The report has shown the whole journey of designing this project. From the initial idea to the actual physical design and application of concept. I think this project is not only aimed at providing an aesthetic space, but is also aimed at turning the attention into students stress levels and how it can be improved, especially when students are not likely to ask for professional help. I am truly happy and proud to present the not only the design idea, but also, the idea behind this project. This project inspires me to explore more in biophilia and neo-cubism, which are both not very popular yet, and especially in the integration between well-being and the environment. The project enabled me to challenge myself, to get out of my comfort zone, to explore myself more as an interior architect and designer. During this project, I have applied all the skills i have learnt throughout all the years, not only in terms of using professional software and creating drawings up to standard, but also in terms of design and critical thinking and challenging myself. I have also learnt so many things from another areas such as understanding laws, some economy and business strategies, graphic design skills and i have also managed to built my own design character in a way.
