SARAH : Science ARound us Along History MEETING REPORT 2
A. Program and activities 1. Monday, February 3rd : arrival of the European partners For its first experiment in the Comenius European project, High School André CAMPA welcomed 8 countries in Jurançon. The 1st meeting was held in Cordoba in November 2013. At the entrance of the school, a banner on the wall and a notice board testify the school's involvement in the project. The 8 partner countries were welcomed one by one by Alain GIACOMETTI, the French coordinator, and Patrick SEREIN, a Civil Engineering teacher. The students were accommodated in the dormitories of the boarding school and the teachers in a hotel in the city centre of Pau. In spite of the late hour of arrival of the bus (for the transfer of the airport of Toulouse at the high school of Jurançon), most visitor students were able to have dinner at the school canteen before going to bed. a. 2. Tuesday, February 4th 08:30-10:30 am The plenary meeting was held in the High School assembly hall where an exposition on sustainable development was displayed during the whole week. Mrs SÉNÉJOUX, the Headmistress, welcomed everyone with a speech in English. Alain GIACOMETTI, the French coordinator, and Laurence LECLERC, an English teacher, presented the schedule for the week and the activities for the day. Francisco LUQUE RUIZ, the main coordinator for the SARAH project, reviewed the main goals of the Comenius project and the work expected during this meeting. He stressed the need to work more between each meeting. Then, he presented 3 types of Sarah Comenius logos and asked everyone to vote for one. Patrick SEREIN and Laurence LECLERC explained why we needed to make different groups for the afternoon. For security reasons, the visit planned at the Platform for Experimental Research in Lacq (PERL) was forbidden for students fewer than 18. Consequently, they would have to stay at the school, in workshops led by French teachers. Each student had to choose 2 workshops out of 5 (3D software/sundials, fashion workshop/sundials, car mechanics workshop/ sundials, English conversation, Spanish conversation) Then all the partners went to visit the school, especially the manufacturing technicians' workshop where the pocket sundials were being made. 10:30-11:00 am Coffee break 11:00-12:00 am The different European schools presented their work thus far. The Spanish team had mainly worked on the Eratosthenes method for earth measurement. Most of the other countries had worked on different sundials projects : different shapes, materials and sizes (imposing, made of bricks and very structured for England, made of metal and smaller for France, Poland and Romania, light and made of paper, fiber or cardboard for Italy and Sweden) Document 1 : David's report SARAH partner schools sundial progress (page 11) 12:00 am
Mr Michel BERNOS, the Jurançon Mayor, made a speech on the importance of the opening on Europe for the city of Jurançon, and congratulated all the persons involved in the project. Lunch at the school allowing the exchanges between partners.

Departure for the City of Space to Toulouse. The atmosphere in the bus was warm and friendly during the long journey : arrived at 10:45 am.
Document 5 : Presentation The City of Space Toulouse (page 15) 11:00-11:20 am We saw a film on the job of astronauts and on the dangers of Space at the Planetarium. 11:30 am
All the participants were divided into 3 groups for the rest of the visit. In each group an English-speaking person was included. Different thematic workshops were organised as follows. Visit of the City of Space for 2 groups : an English-speaking guide explained the physical phenomena present in Space and the technical means which enabled us to reach Space. The visit ended at the foot of the MIR space station's replica: this replica was used for the training of the astronauts' teams to prepare their journey into Space. The workshop "Save the atmosphere" : some students having skills in French language participated in an educational workshop directly in connection with the project Comenius SARAH 13/15. This workshop allowed to explain the role of the atmosphere, its composition and to approach the notion of greenhouse effect by an experiment. The global warming, its causes and its consequences were also evoked as well as the atmospheric pollution. A presentation of the main parameters which allow following the climate change and by processes of measure of the temperatures and pressure was done.

4. Thursday, February 6th 08:30-10:30 am Plenary session in the High School assembly hall. Francisco LUQUE RUIZ (Spain) presented to all, students and teachers, by means of a slide show the protocol of measure of the radius of the Earth which he suggests following in all the countries. The explanations of the method were clear and rigorous. In short, he explained that, at the same time (the same week), each country would have to follow the declination of the Sun to make measurements when it reaches its zenith. This experiment should provide an exact measurement, accurate to at least 5%, even 2%. Then all the countries agreed on 2 series of dates for the measurement in March and in April 2014.

Document 1 : Report of SARAH Partner schools sundial progress - by David All partners gave feedback to the project at Jurancon. All partner schools have made differing developmental progress, due to their schools expertise of teaching. Nova Siri Italy The mathematics has been taught to their students and they have also developed their idea to decide on a vertical Sundial, which will be made of marble and represents classical architecture in their region. The sundial position has been decided on and it will be positioned on a School building. Zabreze Poland The Mathematics has been taught to the students and they have developed their Idea to decide on a vertical sundial that could be fixed to a coal trolley that represents their communities industry. The material of their sundial is to be decided. Roman Romania The type of sundial has been researched and an online sundial generator has been discovered, which was shared with all partners. The type of sundial and the material it will be made from has not been finalised. Cordoba Spain Their sundial has been developed to the point that the position and the materials have been finalised. Their sundial will be positioned on an outside wall out of reach from vandals. The face of the sundial will be made of ceramic, to represent their regions historical industry. They have measured the shadow near the position of the sundial, which has refined the shape of their Gnomon, which from their research, has shown that a L shaped piece of steel, was the best to show a clear reading. Zongaldak Turkey They have so far researched different forms of sundial, but have not been able to develop an idea at this time, due to educational constraints, but is planning to do so in the near future. Lidkoping Sweden Their sundial is in the development process. It has involved students in developing 3 different ideas that are to be finalised on their return. The mathematics has been discussed and will be covered also on their return. Jurancon France They have developed their idea before the Cordoba visit and are now in the machining process of their vertical sundial. Their pocket sundial has very intricate components, which will need refining before they are completed. They hope that they can be developed to have an integrated symbol of each partner school within the design. Cheltenham, Gloscol UK Their sundial design and position has been finalised by their Year 10 construction students, which they are using as evidence for a unit in their qualification. Their sundial is also being used for Environmental science students to show how material extraction impacts on the natural environment. Paco suggested that a flag or symbol of each partner country, be secured on the numerals on the sundial instead of in a wall, as the design suggests. Meeting of Juranรงon February 2014

Document 2 : Report of the visit at the PERL - by Patrick PERL (Platform for Experimental Research in Lacq) The visit was negotiated with Mrs Marie-Laure MESTELAN, communication R&D TOTAL of Pau, then organised by Mr Patrice LAURENT, communication manager in the PERL to Lacq who welcomed us, accompanied during the visit, and then greeted during our departure. For safety reasons, the laboratory is not accessible to the minors ; the group of visitors Comenius was thus 16 professors and 14 major students. All our guides expressed themselves in English. At 2pm, the group was welcomed by Mr Bruno VUILLEMIN, responsible of the PERL in Lacq. Aided by a slide show, he made a general presentation on the PERL and on the activity of the laboratory in the Lacq area. Then he presented the 3 main research fields of the PERL : -
Environment, especially water treatment or ground remediation Gas separations New technologies for oil extraction
At 3:00 pm, the group of participants was divided in two groups to be able to make both visits (permutation at the end of one hour) : -
Visit of the Hall F with Mrs Audrey BRETON Visit of the pilot rivers with Mr Kevin CAILLEAUD
1. In the Hall F, Mrs Audrey BRETON presented half a dozen experimental units intended to do the separation of the fluids: gases, liquids and solids. The pilots are prototypes of equipment which allow to estimate, to size technical, chemical processes, which according to the context and the materials in presence are going to allow to optimize the treatment and the separation of gases (by solvent, membranes, absorption) as well as the processes of solid separation/liquid, liquid/liquid (hydrocarbons and water for example). The goal of this laboratory is to develop high-performance technologies and products to enhance the efficiency, lower the cost and reduce the environmental footprint of separation processes. Several technical solutions were presented by away detailed enough with the concerned scientific considerations (chemical for the main part) and it was a real challenge for our young students to understand them. 2. For the 2nd visit, we took a bus for about 1 mile and went to the pilot rivers. Mr KĂŠvin CAILLEAUD presented this outdoor "laboratory" consisting of 16 artificial streams. The experimental rivers of the Pond of Lacq allow studying the impacts of industrial discharges on the water, to appreciate them via relevant biological indicators on the fauna and on the flora, and to estimate the risks bound to certain substances. This outdoor laboratory is connected with the service Environment of Total and was used, in particular, to study the impact of the CO2 dissolved in the water within the framework of the pilot of harnessing transport and geologic storage of CO2 of Lacq. He also allows making the development of new processes of treatment and optimization of the management of the water as well as the hydrogeology elaboration of modelling and hydro dispersive. Mr CAILLEAUD made clear and simple comments to explain how much patience is needed to study the impacts on Environment and how long it usually takes.

Document 3 : Presentation The Perl (TOTAL)
The fifth international oil and gas group side in the world and leading player of the chemistry, Total has the ambition to have a diversified energy bouquet : hydrocarbons but also new energies as the solar energy or the biomass. The industrial sites of Total Petrochemicals in France produce big intermediaries of the petrochemistry then transform them into plastics used in applications of the everyday life: automobile, packaging, building, household electrical appliances, leisure activities...
Some concrete examples: Bumpers, dashboards, reservoirs with fuel, tubs (ferries, high school diplomas) battery... Bottles, cases CD, pots of yoghurt, hulls (shells) of television sets and computers... Pipes, cable-manufacturing plant, pipes of water conveyance, movie for greenhouse, paint (painting), varnish... Medical equipment, syringes, medical and pharmaceutical packaging, masks and surgical clothes, single-dose flasks... Garden furniture, toys, toothbrushes, pens, clothing... The Total research center Petrochemicals France in Lacq (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) is called from on the Pole of studies and research for Lacq-PERL. By operating scientific know-how internationally recognized, the teams of the PERL bring to all the branches of the Total Group a sharp expertise of chemist on major and strategic subjects.
Combating Climate Change As an industrial operator that uses, produces and markets oil and gas, our responsibilities include managing the carbon emissions generated by our activities. We are also developing solutions to curtail air emissions.
Curtailing Our Emissions One of our challenges is to sharply curb the carbon emissions generated by our facilities and, less directly, the use of our products.
Carbon Capture and Storage To curtail greenhouse gases, Total is contributing to the efforts to make carbon capture and storage commercially viable. We are, for instance, also testing CCS technology in our Lacq commercial-scale demonstration project, in France.

Document 4 : Presentation The vineyard of Jurançon The vineyards cover an area of some forty kilometers in a hilly region (average elevation 300 meters) not far from Lourdes and Biarritz. They consist of small parcels of vines hidden in sunny combs rising among the verdant palms and banana-trees, from the terraces of the Château de Pau to the imposing heights of the Pyrenees. In order to utilize the best land - which is often very steep - the vines can be planted in terraces sometimes taking the shape of an amphitheater. The silicoclay soil contains many round pebbles carried down by the mountain streams and glaciers of the Pyrenees. The wine region divided by a line running from east to west: -
To the south of this line the subsoil is formed from the marine sediment deposited before and during the formation of the Pyrenees. To the north of this line, the soil is inland soil : Jurançon conglomerate, chalk and clay pebbles with siliceous gravel-deposited during the formation of the Pyrenees.
The climate can be: -
a severe mountain climate : the vines are espalier-trained because of the risk of Spring frost. a mild oceanic climate : regular rainfall which guarantees that the vines develop properly. a hot southern climate : particularly with the fine Indian summer enjoyed in Bearn and the south wind which permits "passerillage" or "raisining", a technique used in the production of the great sweet wines to allow the grapes to become overripe. Two white wines enjoying the “appellation d'origine controlee” (A.O.C.) since 1936 Jurançon wine is produced from vines grown over an area of 1000 hectares on the hillsides facing the grandeur of the Pyrenees. These ancient vines boast a royal history.
In the 14th century, the Princes of Bearn and the Navarre parliament introduced the concept of "cru", based on the value of the parcels of vines. This was a first attempt at wine classification in France, and was introduced in Jurançon long before its use in any other French wine region. It was meant as a protective measure to preserve the authenticity of the wines. In 1553, when Henri IV-the future "Henry the Great"-was born Jurançon wine became a part of French history: when the royal infant was christened, his lips were rubbed with a clove of garlic and moistened with a drop of Jurançon wine from which he derived a vigor and an ardent spirit which were never to leave him. http://www.jurancon.com/

Document 7 : Presentation The castle of Pau and museum Pulling probably left of a favorable natural site to the fortification, viscounts of Béarn, since the XIè century, established, in the time of their privileged alliance with the Aragon, a strong castle of a rough simplicity: square tower of weak height, stretched out building body to the South, palisade enclosing the narrow promontory blocked to the East. It is the more autonomous development, and turned further toward the Gascon theater and free-English competition aquitain, that incite to amplify and to modernize the feudal whole, with the Montauzer tower (XIIIè century), high dungeon of stones launched toward the North, the Billère tower and especially the retaking, thoroughly, of the fortress by Gaston Fébus (1343 - 1391). Here the whole of surrounding walls, towers and lodgings developed in an objective of defense bastion are the Bearn, affirms himself like a link essential of the military construction but as economic and politics to which applies the countsun of a tip to the other of the Pyrenees. Decorations and Sculptures The sculpture is a meticulous art that reappears to the Renaissance (15è, 16è century). It understands : -
the low-relief, sculpted shape dug more or less, one speaks then of highrelief. the frieze, surface hovers decorated forming a continuous strip above of doors and the windows. medallions and emblems, plated on facades, they bring their circular rhythms that can be repeated several times. They represent the sculpted characters, of initials, of numbers.
The porch of style Renaissance entrance was constructed under Napoléon III to the 19ème century. It is composed of three arks decorated of richly sculpted pilasters. The M emblems and H decorate sides of the frieze : M for Marguerite of Angouleme, sister of François 1er and grandmother of Henri III of Navarre, future Henri IV of France (H for Henri II of Navarre, grandfather of the future king). A frieze represents the interlocking foliage’s as well as characters. To the Renaissance, the castle was transformed. Gardens To the Italian Renaissance, one sees to reappear gardens of approval bus to the Middle Ages one preferred the utilitarian gardens. It is to the only time of Henri II of Navarre, grandfather of the future Henri IV whom gardens of approval are creates around the castle of Pau. To reach gardens of the castle, it is necessary to get round the wing of the South of France, to take down some marches, to pass under an arbor where shoot of the grapevine, to finally clear on the terrace. Gardens are shape breve, surrounded of enclosures in wood. To the center, 18 small floors are regrouped and are delimited by the built box trees. Defensive walls, Poterne, Tower of the Currency Defensive walls are walls of stone that defend the castle. Three pregnant surrounded the castle of Pau. We never knew if they were useful because there was no attack. To the XV century, two pregnant were destroyed; defensive walls disappeared to the Renaissance because kings preferred palaces then that the strong castles. http://www.chateau-pau.com/english/index.htm

Document 8 : Presentation The “Pic du Midi de Bigorre” 2.877 m The Pic du Midi de Bigorre, one of the most majestic summits in the Hautes-Pyrénées, awaits you at 2877 metres. Accessible to the general public, the Pic du Midi is renowned for the beauty of its landscape and also for its astronomy observatory and his museum.
To reach the summit of the Pic du Midi, you will be carried away on a magnificent ascent. All year round, summer and winter alike, go to La Mongie, the Domaine du Tourmalet ski resort. You will climb 1,000 metres in 15 minutes in the cable car, just time to give you a foretaste before reaching the peak at 2,877 metres.
The site of the Pic du Midi is a site of high mountains, which was designed to accommodate visitors to 2877m safely. Conditions sightseeing are those that are found only in altitude. Here are some important recommendations to make the most of your visit to the summit. The Pic du Midi has long been known for the stability of the atmosphere, and the purity of the light found at the top. It is not a coincidence that there was an observatory installed. Oxygen is a little more rare, the air is purer, but also more lively ... the annual average temperature is 1°C ! At almost 3000 meters above sea level, the sun is nearest course, its influence is much greater than the seaside. We therefore recommend that a provision in any season warm clothes, the sunglasses and sunscreen, and if your medications during treatment. Up there, the air and the light have a purity and transparency that are the secret of this area, which, for many years, was reserved for scientists. The lookout terraces were laid out over 750 sq. m. You can gaze upon 300 km of Pyrenees summits between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and on the plains of the great South West. The splendor of the landscapes warranted the Pic du Midi being listed as a national natural site in 2003.
It all started with a weather observatory at the end of the 19th century. Since then, the Pic du Midi has been an incredible epic, attracting the passionate, the erudite, the curious, porters, builders and scholars, avidly looking to better understand the universe. The exceptional qualities of the site allow observations and measurements to understand the earth’s evolution. Today, this continuing human adventure is shown in Europe’s highest museographic space. http://www.picdumidi.com

Pilgrims, visitors and other tourists come from all over the world to discover this very special site. So it is not unusual to meet people who come from different regions of the world but who share a common goal: the quest for spirituality. http://www.lourdes-infotourisme.com/web/EN/328-cosmopolitan-lourdes.php http://en.lourdes-france.org/
