Science lab about acids and bases for students in mixed groups. The Swedish students made the preparations for the science sessions in school and helped out as “substitute teachers” during the lab.

Experiment about acids and bases Material: 4 cans, 6 tubes, 1 tube rack, 4 pipettes, 0,5 dl solution of E330 (Citric acid), 0,5 teaspoons of E500 (Sodium bicarbonate), 1 ml E162 (Beetroot), 1 ml E163 (anthocyanins), Water Equipment: Coat, Safety glasses Read the whole instruction before starting Instructions: 1. Mark the cans with E330, E500, E162, E163. 2. Pour 0,5 dl of the E330 solution into the can marked E330. 3. Mix 0,5 teaspoon E500 with 0,5 dl water in the can marked E500. 4. Mix 1 ml E162 with 0,5 dl water in the can marked E162. 5. Mix 1 ml E163 with 0,5 dl water in the can marked E163. Do the following 6-14 with both the E162 and E163, start with the E162. 6. Put 3 tubes in the tube rack next to each other. 7. Pour the color solution in the outer tubes until it is half full (Approximate 5 ml). Use pipette. 8. Pour the solution of E330 into the left tube. Pour it so it reaches the upper line. Use pipette. What's happening? 9. Pour the solution of E500 in the right tube. Pour until it reaches the upper line. Use pipette. What's happening? 10. Lift up the left tube and pour the liquid into the middle tube until it is half full. 11. Lift up the right tube and slowly pour the liquid in the middle tube so it reaches the line second from the top. What's happening? Now as explained before redo 6-14 with E163. After the experiment you can clean everything and pour out the liquids in the sink.

Experiment about acids - Explanation Citric acid is sour and sodium bicarbonate is basic. When citrus acid and sodium bicarbonate mixes it happens a Chemical reaction. The solution is neutral and at the same time it releases carbon dioxide. The substances that changes colors is dependent of if solutions is sour, basic or neutral and it's called pH-indicators and carrot/beetroot is two natural indicators. Beetroot and carrot are different sensitive to change in acidity.

Painting with chemicals Day 1 Material: Solution of E163 (black carrot) - Add additional 2 ml color and 0,5 dl water, Solution of E330 (citric acid). Solution of E500 (sodium bicarbonate), Easel, 8 cotton swabs, 4 Papers Read the whole instruction before starting 1. Put the papers on the easel. 2. Spray the solutions E163 at the papers. Use pipette at the first try. 3. Hang up the papers for them to dry. Day 2 Instructions: 1. Put the paper on the bench. 2. Use the cotton swabs to paint with. Use one swab for the E 330 and one for E 500 Explanation for painting with chemicals: The food colors are affected by the paper's pH. The manufacturing process determines wether the paper is sour, neutral or basic. The citric acid is sour and the sodium bicarbonate is basic. Sour and basic solutions give different color changes.

City tour – made by the Swedish students.

1. Rörstrand Rörstrand was one of the most famous Swedish porcelain manufacturers. The production initially took place in Stockholm, later it was transported all the way from Gothenburg to Lidköping 1936. Today most of the production take place abroad. Some important products were: •1760's first printed decors •1770's first pieces of earthenware •1881 first dinner service of feldspar porcelain •1930 presentation of the National tableware, designed by Louise Adelborg, the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930 •1991 presentation of the Nobel tableware, used since the Nobel Ba 2. Nya Stadens Torg, The New Town Square Rådhuset- This is our town-hall. It was originally intended as Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie's hunting lodge, but instead was moved to the new city square and became a town-hall. This happened during the late 17th century along the founding of Lidköping. 1960 the building burnt down and the upper floors were completely demolished. However, shortly afterwards, it was decided to rebuild the town-hall and renovate the damaged parts.

Särnmarkska pumpen- This is the pump that would provide the people with clean water 1856. It was a donation from tradesman A.P Särnemarks. The spring house later became a gathering place for people in the city. 1904 the pump was renewed in honor of A.P Säremarks. Schougska gården- This is the only garden as a whole, to be preserved from the 18th century. Johan Petter Schoug was the one who would trade cereals, flour, sugar, brandy, gunpowder, explosives etc. From the 17th to 20th century the bussines- and trades men would be the dominating forces in Lidköping. The trading system grew bigger and became a symbol for all of Lidköping. The most important trading partners were the ones over the Mediterranean 3. Garströmska huset (The House of Garström) Lidköping is a city, famous about all their bakeries and patisseries. One of them is the patisserie Ferd. Garström in the corner of one house placed near the New Town Square. The patisserie has been here since 1859. After a fire, a new building came up 1886 and that building is still here today. In the sales part, the interior of the second half of the 1800s still remains. This whole block is composed of two major castles farms which primarily took its present form in the 1880s. 4. Vattentornet (The Watertower) Here we have the old water tower. It's an important building for Lidköping and is well known of nearly all of Lidköpings population. It is 48 meters high from the ground and it is 96.5 meter above the water. It was finished with its building process in 1902. It is mostly built of stone from Kinnekulle, a small mountain or a very high hill near Lidköping. All of Lidköpings population got their water from this water tower all the years after 1902 until the new watertower placed somewhere else started to work 1967. 5. Tingshuset (The Courthouse) & Villastaden (The town of Houses) Tingshuset or The Courthouse was built in 1900 when the three tingslaws went together as one law. The tingshuset inaugurate the 18 January 1904 after two years building it was done and ready to go. In the

tingshuset is where u take care of the people that have done some crimes and give them jail or whatever they say. If you're looking down the street after the courthouse you will see some big beautiful houses or mansions. In these houses the very successful doctors who worked at the hospital lived in the 1800 century. This area is called "Villastaden" or in directly translating English, the city of houses. 6. Kylanderskolan (The Kylanderschool) & Stadsträdgården (The City Garden) Kylander School, which now houses the local music school, built in 1868 by a donation of pharmacists Kylander. The architect was lidköping son Helgo Zettervall-one of the country's leading architects in the late 1800s. The schoolhouse has a well-preserved exterior with vertical tongued panel, lace paned casement windows and richly designed facade. The porch was originally open but was built in 1931. Stadsträgården (The City Garden) is an awesome place to met some new friends and maybe just relax with your family. We have some great artist visiting this town and with their awesome performance and with millions of views on YouTube makes our town popular for international and national artists. And if you have kids you can just take them to the playground behinds the big scene and while watching your kids you could buy your self a nice ice-cream. 7. Sjukhuset (The Hospital) This is Lidköpings hospital and it is a emergancy-hospital and there is also departements for kids, teens, adults and lots of more. The hospital is designed for being modern. They started to build the hospital in 1866. And after 26 years in 1892 was the building complete. The red brick building is one of the biggest part in the picture of the city. 8. Wennerbergsgården (The Garden of Wennerberg) Wennebergsgården its a part of the old town lidkoping. This part bellows to the old part of Lidkoping and it's here were the big fire took place for about 300 years ago and the fire did burn down everything in its way except of just one timber house that we are watching right now.

9. Nicolaikyrkan (The church of Nicolai) This is the heart of the old part of the city. Through the year this church has endured lots of fires, but several time been rebuilt. It's a church that originally was built to honor the patron saint s:t Nicolaus. Numerous buildings and churches all over Sweden have been built for the same purpose. S:t Niolaus is also representing the city arms of Lidköping.

10. Gamla Stadens Torg ( The old Town Square) This square is since 16th century has been located next to the bridge close to the river. Today we have a bar called "stat", we also have a city hotel called "city hotel", that's our main hotel. We have the old town square and the new town square. One of Lidkopings oldest houses called "the Lidbecks house"and tou can see it on the south side. Today it´s the town hall. 11. Limtorget This is the oldest part of our city. It's the only preserved city-part after the big fire 1849. After the fire in Gustava Lidbecks garden, the old city was renewed. To prevent from similar incidents, the streets were built straighter and broader, so the fires wouldn't reach the trees nearby and spread. In the buildings you'll find craftsmen, artists, museums and a cafe. 12. Järnvägsgatan Now we're at Järnvägsgatan, or translated to english, it's called the street of iron.

Teachers dinner at Sofia´s house

Tuesday 3th june: 

Science lab with watercleaning – after the lab the students discussed the importance of clean water for all living creatures and if there´s any problems with watersuply in different countries in Europe and the rest of the world.

Experiment 1 - Chemical Cleaning of Water Water that is beneath the ground is called groundwater. Groundwater is often so clean that you can drink it, but in cities or other densely populated areas it is not enough. Then water from lakes, rivers or other currents is used. That water is called surface water and to make it drinkable you have to clean it in a waterworks. The surface water is often polluted with particles that are hard to clean. In this experiment we will analyze what happens when we add a water cleaning chemical. Materials 0,5 ml sodium bicarbonate, 1 ml 'Oboy' chocolate powder, 1 ml PAX-XL19 solution, 1,5 liters PET-bottle, ml measurement, Water Instructions First we will pollute the water so that it looks like water could look in a lake. A little brown, but not too dirty. Pour 1 liter tap water into the PET-bottle. Add 0,5 ml sodium bicarbonate. Add 1 ml 'Oboy'. Seal the bottle and shake until it is completely solved (No lumps). Now it's time to add the water cleaning chemical. Open the bottle and add 1 ml of the PAX-solution. Seal the bottle and shake for about 5-10 seconds. Slowly roll the bottle on the table and try to see what happens (about 1-2 minutes). Put the bottle at a place where you can observe what happens inside of it. Experiment 2 - Dialysis The dialysis tube lets certain molecules and ions through. It can be used to clean the blood of people who are kidney sick. Now let's examine what happens when two different liquids are placed inside respectively outside of the dialysis tube. Materials Plastic Cup, Sodium bicarbonate solution dyed with black carrot, Citric acid solution, 15cm dialysis tube, 2 wire twists Instructions Rinse the dialysis hose with water (eases opening). Open the tube and fold one end. Then fold the folded end double to tighten it. Close it with a wire twist. Fill the tube with the colored bicarbonate solution with a pipette. Close the second end the same way as the first one. Use wire twist. Rinse off eventual spilling from the outside of the dialysis tube with water. Put the dialysis tube in the plastic cup. Pour the citric acid solution in the cup until it completely covers the dialysis tube. What happens? Short explanation of what happens The dialysis tube is made of a so called semipermeable membrane, a membrane that lets water and smaller molecules such as ions through, but not bigger molecules. The citric acid and the anthocyans are too big to pass through the dialysis hose, but the carbonate ions that are created when sodium bicarbonate are solved in water are small enough. When the bicarbonate ions penetrate out they react with the citric acid and create carbon dioxide. It bubbles. After approximately 10 minutes it still bubbles and then you can see that the contents in the top of the dialysis tube have changed color from purple to pink. That is because the anthocyans in black carrot are natural pH-indicators, they change color when the solution gets less basic. After half an hour it still bubbles and the color shift has become clearer. If you let the experiment stand the tube's content will become completely pink.

Visit to Läckö castle and Victoriahouse. The group is divided in two smaller groups, one starts with a guided tour at the castle, the other with a visit at Victoriahouse. There the students learn about evolutionary biology and are making a small excursion in the nearby pond where they catch and explore different animals. We have lunch out in the green before we change tasks.

In the afternoon there´s a teachers meeting discussing the future of the project.

In the evening we have organized a picnic with the Swedish game “Brännboll” with all the students and familys. Unfortunality it´s raining, but we played the game anyway and had the picnic indoor at the local sailing club. The Swedish student Adrian organized for everybody that wanted to try sailing, wich was a very estimated activity for many of the foreign students who never tried this before.

Wednesday 4th june: 

Excursion to Kinnekulle. A trip is made to the “Flowering mountain” nearby where three different sigths are visited – Munkängarna with Stenbrottet, Högkullen and Österplana. This is a biological and geological very interesting place, the mountain is in different layers of rock so the nature are very diversed. A lot of rare plants can be spotted and most of the area is a national park. Here Carl von Linné did a lot of his famous work. At the different sigths the students are asign to examine the plants and animals and describe the biotope in gruops. At the end they should discuss why there is so big differences between the there places. At Stenbrottet they had a small task about geology.

There is a short final ceremony while we get back, to say thanks and giving out diplomas for all participants.

The teachers have a short meeting to sort out their last tasks

Evening – final dinner at “Restaurant Mellbygatan”. We were served a delicious meal with asparagus salad and spring lamb, all made by local egological producers. But it had been enough if they told us this once, not every time… But we had a god laugh about it anyhow.

Thursday 5th june: 

The bus leaves short after eight in the morning to the airport, a lot of goodbyes and hugs. The students made friends for life and I know that most of my students already been in touch with their students – love facetime, facebook  I would like to thank all participants for a lovely week and I send a special thanks to all the familys who´s been great hosts, the city of Lidköping wich has sponsored our trips and the school who´s been inviting all vistors for free food during the stay.
