I could be a zebra and eat cocoa beans all day long! 8

In Identity 2 class, Todd Hedgpeth assigned the students to rebrand a company. I chose Mars because I love their candies and I think their branding should be as remarkable as all those delicious goodies that they make.

solution_

For the new branding strategy, I wanted to make Mars as if it was an actual planet where everyone would be having a blast. I created creatures to enhance this experience and make them as the supporting graphic elements. The brand standard manual was written and laid out to mimic storybooks.

In Typography 4, our instructor, Ariel Grey, assigned us to design a promotion for a chosen typeface that includes a promo book, a type specimen book, a poster, and a kinetic video story board. I picked Mrs Eaves.

solution_

The love story behind the name Mrs Eaves was the inspiration for this project. It is a chooseyour-own adventure book, which allows readers to decide their paths based on their feelings, instead of their brains. And if they do this, it will lead them to a pleasant ending.

objective_

In Print 1, Troy Alders assigned the students to do a world tour book for a current band or musician. The musician that I picked was a jazz singer from Singapore, Olivia Ong.

solution_

To represent her soft and feminine voice, I used a delicate typographic treatment. I wanted the book to have an airy feeling for it to be soothing on the eye because that’s how her music sounds to my ears every time I listen to her.

objective_

In Graphic Design 2, Jeff Ho assigned us to do a brand rejuvenation of an existing company, and to design their promotional campaign. The deliverables include a set of posters, a website and also other applications that will enhance the experience for people that are using the service.

solution_

I picked the theme park Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. I was influenced by the park and the fun atmosphere that I’ve always had going there. I decided to use bright colors and to illustrate the exuberant characters, to excite everyone who comes to the park.

objective_

In Typography 3, our instructor, Ariel Grey assigned us to create an imaginary conference with a chosen subject, and also to design its promotional pieces, which includes a book with a case, a poster, and a give-away piece. solution_

The purpose of the conference was to raise awareness on how technology has been taking over humans’ lives, and one of the negative impacts was that it has weakened our social skills. In this conference, the audience will be reintroduced to basic communication skills.

HAPPINESS Happy expressions convey messages

DISGUST Disgust expressions are often part of

’s responses to objects that are nauseating. Disgust expressions are often part of the body’s responses to objects that are revolting and nauseating, such as rotting flesh, fecal matter and insects in food, or other offensive materials that are rejected as suitable to eat. Obnoxious smells are effective in eliciting disgust reactions. Disgust expressions are displayed as a commentary on many other events and people that generate adverse reactions, but have nothing to do with the origin of disgust as a rejection of possible foodstuffs.

SADNESS S ad e xp re s s ions co nvey messag e s

, di sco m f ort , p a in, helplessnes, e t c . Sad expressions are often conceived as opposite to happy ones, but this view is too simple, although the action of the mouth corners is opposite. Sad expressions convey messages related to loss, bereavement, discomfort, pain, helplessness, etc. Until recently, American culture contained a strong censure against public displays of sadness by men, which may account for the relative ease of finding pictures of sad expressions on female faces. A common sense view, shared by psychologists, is that sad emotion faces are lower intensity forms of crying faces, which can be observed early in newborns, but some differences noted between these two expressions challenge this view, though both of them are actually related to distress.

SURPRISE Surprise expressions convey messages

omething unexpected, novel, or amazing. Surprise expressions are fleeting, and difficult to detect or record in real time. They almost always occur in response to events that are unanticipated, and they convey messages about something being unexpected, sudden, novel, or amazing. The brief surprise expression is often followed by some other expressions that reveal emotion in response to the surprise feeling or to the object of surprise, emotions such as happiness or fear. For example, most of us have been surprised, perhaps intentionally, by people who appear suddenly or do something unexpecte, and elicit surprise, but if the person is a friend, a typical after-emotion is happiness; but if a stranger, fear. A surprise seems to act like a reset switch that shifts attention.

objective_

In Packaging Design 3 class, our instructor, Tom McNulty, challenged us to design a clock and to come up with a sustainable packaging for it.

solution_

I picked a European toy company called PlaySam and created a clock for their kids’ line. This is a clock with no numbers so as to educate kids not to be constrained by time. The packaging is not only for the clock, it can also be used to store the kids’ toys.

objective_

In the advanced class, Packaging 4, Michael Osborne assigned our team of five to reimagine Walgreens stores. We had to rethink the logo, restructure the brands with the store, and also to design all of the packaging for it.

solution_

Our strategy was to make Walgreens as a house of brands store, with one store brand and three private brands. Pop Coulson is one of the private brands that brings back vintage candies from the old days to the modern store. This brand is an ode to the man, Ivar ‘Pop’ Coulson, who used to work for Walgreens that invented the milkshake and made the world sweeter.

objective_

In the advanced class, Packaging 4, Michael Osborne assigned our team of five to reimagine Walgreens stores. We had to rethink the logo, restructure the brands with the store, and also to design all of the packaging for it.

solution_

We rebranded Walgreens with a house of brands strategy, with one store brand that crosses categories of food, hardware, productivity and kids’ products. We named it Main Street. We were inspired by the city life, and also by the people who live there.

objective_

solution_

I like to come up with ideas. To me, design is never about style, it’s more about meaning. Nevertheless, just like how I was always taught, it’s not just about getting the right idea, it’s also about getting the idea right. When I get both in the end, then I would be able to say I am a happy graphic designer.
