MAGAZINE
Editorial Design | Term 4 Magazine DEFINE THE NEEDS TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE Specific problem that needs to be solved • Too many typeface used on the cover • The logo is not stand out because it was distracted by the background image. So, the logo can not directly readable • The main title of the magazine, Fun Festival, is fit with the target audience because it uses a playful typeface and not static. But it is confusing because we do not know what it is stand for. • Widow words • The spreads are too full of words and images. There are not enough white spaces. • Layouts are too static. It’s not match with the target audience (young adult) who has a dynamic character (expressive, love to try something new, explorative). • The quote’s type (page 59) looks too serious. Does not match with the young adult’s look and feel (dynamic, playful). And does not match with the typeface that have been used on the text. • Not neat information (page 44, Budget Basic) • Hierarchy of the text. What to show firstly (for example page 36–37), the quotes or the subheading? • A bit risky to put lead with a white color above the background. It decreases the text ability to be readable. (e.g. page 17) • Some kerning are too tight • The color choices make the text not easily see seen (e.g. page 75) Organization overview getaway! Want to show the exciting feeling of some festivals around the world. Design objective Make the enjoyment and excitement feeling to take people’s attention then influence them to travel the places. The varieties of image’s placements represent the playful side of this magazine (because the target audience is Young Adult). Target audience Young adult Consumer’s perception Why would the target audience choose this particular magazine over its competitors? This magazine picked a different point of view to promote some places which are selected by this magazine. It promotes the festivals (carnivals) of the places. It could become a new attraction for some people. Not just the usual promotions like showing the beautiful places. The competitors and define their strength & weakness! My Trip: Just pack & go! • The cover not attractive. It does not really show the image of the places. • Hierarchy of the text. Many images that distract the text. So we cannot feel the flow of the hierarchy. • More like a book than a magazine, because it does not really show that the texts on the callouts are the articles. It looks like an extra decorative part. • Too many typeface uses • More expensive, but the cover makes it looks less exclusive. Because it’s too decorative, too many typeface uses, and doesn’t get the main topic visualization (about Keliling ASEAN dengan Biaya Irit) Tamasya • The tagline is “Teman Wisata Anda” but it doesn’t show any friendly feeling of the magazine. It looks stiff. I think friendly could be shown by expressive images or maybe playful typeface. • Too many typeface uses
Creative approaches Problem: The composition of the layout makes the spread looks so full of texts and images Solve: Change the layout, give extra white space Problem:
Editorial Design | Term 4 Magazine Some of the colours are distracting the text Solve: Change the colour or the typeface (maybe the typeface is too light) Problem: The placement of texts on the cover is not clear enough to feel the hierarchy Solve: Repair the placement and the hierarchy Problem: Too much typeface uses on the cover Solve: Pick some of the best typeface to be used Problem: Some widow texts, not proper kerning, and text size composition Solve: Fix them up! Problem: Some of white texts that putted above the image are not clearly read Solve: Change the placement of the text/image, or make a text box using 100% opacity so the text will be clearer, or change the image’s angle. Problem: The quote’s type (page 59) looks too serious. Does not match with the young adult’s look and feel (dynamic, playful). And does not match with the typeface that have been used on the text. Solve: Choose more playful typeface, maybe the sans serif ones. Or maybe change it to italic to make it less formal (serious) because it has more flow.
