Do you Mind Map? Are you facing data processing overload or the inability to connect and relate facts and data you are reading? Try the Spider diagram or mind mapping. What is this mind mapping? It is a multi-dimensional presentation of what you are reading, a 300 foot view of the subject matter you are trying to process so badly. It is an organized way to slice and dice a subject in a way that provides you an overview and a picture of words all assembled in a way that makes sense and correlates to a central connection point.

It does provide you a clear and crisp imagery, with colors and shapes, links and connections to facilitate the digestion of multiple facts, making it easy to notice associations, generate ideas and reach conclusions and results faster. Most importantly, you can recall the map from memory if you are one of those photographic memory type people. With a mind map, you see the shape of the matter, relationships between elements that were not so obvious in words, efficient connections and facts relating to each other, which enables you to quickly review and remember information effectively. In an era of innovation and creativity, this tool can be your friend in quickly finding creative solutions to complex problems. The best way to proceed with a mind map or spider diagram is to place the subject in the middle of the page and circle it, then draw the major subdivisions or branches or twigs going out of the circle, then new lines or leaves for new sub-facts as you progress. The key is to end up with a highly visual representation of data that can be easily processed in your mind as an image would. It is very important though to use simple words, colors and even pictures and accurate information; separate and cross-link appropriately between branches and sub-divisions. Last, don’t be afraid of colors and enjoy building your mind maps. Further reading: “The Mind Mapping Book” by Tony and Barry Buzan Picture courtesy of Learning Fundamentals.com.au
