How adults learn Before you can teach an adult, you need to assess what “type” of adult you are about to instruct. The easiest way to proceed is with a learning styles assessment which works as an inventory list. Adults’ learning styles vary based on many factors and sensory individual abilities. So, what is your style?

Your style is VISUAL/ SPATIAL if you tend to draw pictures, use colors and maps to organize or communicate information look at the graphics and can understand it without reading the text that explains the graphics. You have a good spatial sense and are generally good with direction and positionning. You love the whiteboard and cannot stand meetings that only include personal opinions and vague concetps. You envision the topic or play a scene in your mind enacting the development of the subject matter. Your style is AUDITORY/AURAL, if you listen to the words you read, you try to develop an internal conversation between you and the text., you are not embarrassed to read aloud or talk through the information. You have a sense of rythm and like to work with music and sounds. You like to associate sound with topics to vizualize things and associate concepts just like a dish or spice is associated with an aroma or someone with a parfume.

Your style is is TACTILE/ KINESTHETIC if you highlight interesting passages in a book you are hands-on and enjoy physical engagement with your environment, you take notes and mark your book margins or journal you hold the book in your hands instead of placing it on a table, you walk around as you read, you feel the words and ideas. You Get busy—both mentally and physically. You need to touch things to learn (just like toddlers), you learn through exploration and tangible action. May not be a big reader or may become impatient if the activity does not allow physical interaction.
