Adapting to Rising Waters
Sustainable Initiatives to Mitigate the Impacts of Urbanization The theme for my chosen thesis studio focused on the co-relation of urbanization and climate change. I chose to work on an issue in Jakarta mainly to learn more about the country I didn’t grown up in despite being a citizen. Addressing the problem with my given proposals allowed me to work on and learn more about issues and topics that I feel passionate about within the industry, those being upgrading conditions for the urban poor and looking into environmentally sustainable solutions.

The Abstract

The effects of urbanization and climate change can be seen from the severe floods that inundate Jakarta annually. The government has made efforts to counter the problem which include cleaning the rivers and putting strict rules on groundwater extraction. Their most recent effort is to build a giant sea wall in the form of reclaimed islands in the bay of Jakarta to protect the city from rising sea levels. An offshore lake will be created in between Jakarta and the giant sea wall and the collected water will be the city’s main water supply. However, this water is expected to be highly polluted which concludes that the city has more urgent matters that need to be dealt with. The urban poor are those mostly affected by floods and they are also the main contributors of water pollution due to the lack of formal services available for them. My proposal consists of two initiatives that are to happen over different times. The first initiative is to upgrade the slums that have formed along Jakarta’s rivers, by improving their services and structures. The second initiative is to take place after improvements can be seen from upgrading the slums. Blue-green infrastructures will be implemented and this includes restoring river beds and reviving parks in Jakarta.

Law of the Jungle
Challenging existing building laws The theme for this chosen studio is to challenge existing building laws in Berlin and Brandenburg, Germany and see its potential impact in the neighbourhoods if they were to be applied.

Each plot owner is able to maximize their building plot area in collaboration with their neighbours. This creates a house in their plot intersections. Due to varying plot areas, each part of the intersection house will differ. Only the main structural elements will be provided so the facades will vary according to the inhabitants preferences. ‘Wayang Kulit’ Cultural Centre Reviving a lost art in the heart of the city
This Bachelor’s studio required us to design an urban infill on a specific site at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In a bustling, diverse city centre, it was the perfect location and opportunity to re-introduce an almost forgotten performing arts tradition - the ‘wayang kulit’ (shadow puppet).

Retreat House
Among the tea plantations in Cameron Highlands One of my very first Bachelor’s studio work required us to design a retreat house near tea plantations in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia - a cool and hilly getaway place for most Malaysians. The idea was to be the least obstructive to the beautiful landscape by submerging most of the building in the hills with three distinct protrusions that captured three amazing views to enliven the spatial experience.
